Standing with Ukraine PEOPLE in the Yate and Sodbury area have come together to send help and show solidarity with Ukrainians after the Russian invasion which has claimed thousands of lives.

People living in the area donated around 200 boxes of aid in the first weeks of the war, to send to help both refugees and those fighting for their country's survival.

And a father-of-three from Yate borrowed a van to drive across the border into Ukraine with a friend, to deliver some of the aid.

Wesley Hawkes saw first hand the desperation of refugees waiting in freezing conditions to cross the border – and ordinary people preparing to take up arms and fight.

Vans filled with donations lined up outside Poole Court in Yate

Yate's 'amazing' response to Ukraine crisis THE response of Yate and Sodbury people to the crisis in Ukraine has been described as “an amazing effort” after hundreds of donations of much needed supplies were handed in to collecting points around the area.

Yate town councillor Ben Nutland, who has helped co-ordinate the collections, told the Voice: "Within the first couple of weeks, around 200 large boxes were donated and packed off to the Polish border.

"Donations from residents have been both overwhelming and amazing. It has been really special.

"It took 15 members of staff from Yate Town Council to load four vans, one kindly donated by Pearce Bros of Yate for the day, to take the donations to a depot in Patchway that had been secured by a group in Emersons Green who were also collecting donations.

"The donations were then transported to the Polish border".

Town mayor Karl Tomasin issued a statement on behalf of the council pledging support for the people of Ukraine, including those who come to the UK. He said: "We, as a town council and community, commit to being a town that supports the people of Ukraine, and we will welcome refugees into our community.

"We hold the people of Ukraine in our hearts as we watch the atrocities unfold on the daily news. We send our love and our hopes for peace to all those affected."

Following the initial rush of donations the town council is taking a short pause to assess exactly what will be needed in the longer term, but Ben believes there will be a continuing need to help people on both sides of the Poland/Ukraine border.

He said: "It's a conversation that some of the councillors have had.

What we don’t want to do is to clog up the border with donations, with so much coming from this country, and find that not all of it gets in.

"We’ve been encouraging people to donate to the Disasters Emergency Committee if they can, because that seems to be the best alternative at the moment, but obviously people love to donate physical items as well.

"We just need to wait to see what updates we have. Poland and Moldova are going to need continuous aid going forward to support the refugees that come in.

"Medical supplies, dried foods, camping equipment -those are the sort of things that are going to be required and what people have been asking for.

"The staff at Poole Court will be happy to supply lists of what is required so that people who want to can go out and buy specific items.”

n NEWS A DAD from Yate drove across Europe to take aid donations to Ukraine.

Wesley Hawkes and his friend Nathan Calder borrowed a van to deliver hundreds of items, from first aid kits and nappies to helmets and bulletproof vests.

Wes and Nathan, who lives in Staple Hill, decided to make the trip after taking some donations to Emersons Green Village Hall, which was being used as a hub for aid collected across South Gloucestershire, including from in Yate, and helping to load the first lorry and vans to head for Ukraine.

He asked the village hall's manager Viv Roberts, who also lives in Yate, what else they could do to help.

Wes said: "She told us they had a lot of donations but were struggling to take them over to where they were needed."

Wes, who is a director of Hydraquip Hose & Hydraulics, borrowed a van through a work contact and set up a crowdfunding page called The Long Drive, asking for £1,500 to cover the costs of the trip. Within a few days the pair had reached their target and were ready to go.

They set off on the night of March 6, spending 30 hours on the road to Dover, through France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Poland before reaching the border with Ukraine in the early hours of March 8.

On the way Wes, who had never driven in Europe before, and Nathan took turns to drive and sleep.

They had to go through a snow storm just outside Ukraine, which some other drivers were speeding dangerously through.

After arriving at the PolandUkraine border and phoning a contact who was waiting on the other side, they had their passports taken and were waved into an area inside Ukraine.

Wes said they were nervous as they did not know what to expect, but soon met people with vans waiting to unload their

aid, under the supervision of a Ukrainian soldier.

Wes said he and Nathan were glad to see the aid go directly to people in Ukraine, rather than being left with a charity or at a collection centre in Poland.

When the Ukrainians got to the three bags of military kit, Nathan said, "they put the first two in one of the vans and the last one they shared between them, because they were going back to a war zone to fight and didn't have proper kit – the helmets were like gold".

Wes said: "You could see the desperation of these people to fight this invasion.

"Although they didn't speak any English and we didn't speak Ukrainian, you could still understand what they were going through – their eyes told the story."

Once they had emptied their van, Nathan and Wes were directed back to the border, alongside a queue of about 200 women and children waiting to cross into Poland, in freezing conditions, at 2am. Some were

huddled around a fire for warmth and others were in vehicles.

Wes, who has two sons and a daughter with wife Katie, said: "We saw young children

and mothers all wrapped up in blankets, trying to stay warm, as temperatures were minus 5 and snowing.

"We could hear children crying. Some of the kids had no parents with them – it was heartbreaking.

"We got very emotional as we've both got kids. I'll never forget it as long as I live."

After returning across the border Nathan and Wes were put up by a Polish couple before heading home.

Nathan said: "I just started crying, as I started to reflect on what we'd seen.

Wes said: "One thing I would take from this is be kind to others and help, because you will never know when we will need help – it’s important for all of us to pull together to make this world a safer place."

Bus service axed as it is 'no longer viable' BUS operator First is cutting services in the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area.

The company is axing the Y2 route, which links the towns to Bristol city centre via Downend and Fishponds, and stopping the Y4 from serving Yate town centre.

First says the Y2 route is not commercially viable, "as a result of low passenger numbers that pre-date the pandemic".

The Y2 currently runs seven times a day from Bristol to Yate and eight times in the opposite direction, Monday to Saturday, and six times in each direction on Sundays, roughly once every two hours.

The Y4 hourly service to Bristol via Coalpit Heath, Winterbourne and Frenchay will no longer go all the way into Yate town centre.

Instead it will start and finish at the new Yate Park and Ride in Badminton Road, and Monday to Saturday frequency will be

reduced from every hour to every 90 minutes.

First says the move is "to ensure the service is financially viable and can be operated within available resources".

It is advising customers travelling to or from Yate town centre to switch to the halfhourly service Y1 at the Yate Park and Ride.

The company says the Y1, Y3 and Y6 services will have "minor timetable changes to improve punctuality".

The changes are among a number of cuts to be introduced on April 24, which were announced just two weeks after the government said it would spend an extra £150 million nationwide to support local bus services until October.

First West of England managing director Doug Claringbold said: “Despite the Government extending emergency funding for another six months, ongoing issues with

driver availability mean further action is necessary beyond the changes we made at the end of January, to ensure we can operate services more reliably for our customers.

"A number of services will see temporary reductions in frequency, whilst passenger and driver numbers are constrained, but unfortunately there are a number of services that are not commercially viable even at prepandemic passenger levels."

The cuts have sparked a political row, with South Gloucestershire's Conservative councillors and MPs accusing the West of England Combined Authority, led by Labour Metro Mayor Dan Norris, of "approving" them, failing to consult residents and "passing the buck on whose responsibility it is to keep buses running".

But a spokesperson for the Metro Mayor said WECA had not yet been told by the government how much money it would

receive from the £150m Bus Recovery Grant.

And while bus operators have to notify WECA of changes to services, it Doug "does not Claringbold have powers to prevent services being withdrawn if those services are fully commercial ones".

The authority recently approved funding to support the Y5 from Chipping Sodbury and Yate to Pucklechurch and Bristol.

Mr Norris said: "The Tories created the current system that is seeing cuts and service reductions, and no public consultation is built into their plans.

"There isn't enough money in the system to keep these buses going, and that's a big blow."

Inspectors' report confirms school's transformation YATE Academy has been praised by the education watchdog for its ambition, curriculum and "high expectations" of pupils.

Ofsted inspectors gave the school in Sundridge Park "outstanding" ratings in two out of five categories: behaviour and attitudes, and leadership and management.

It was rated good in all other areas – quality of education, personal development and sixth form provision – and good overall by Yate Academy head teacher the inspection team, who visited in Natalie Wilcox January.

It was the first time the school had been visited by Ofsted since being taken over by the Greenshaw Learning Trust in 2017. Its last full inspection had been in 2015, under the former Ridings Federation, when Ofsted said it required improvement.

The inspectors said the school, which has 745 pupils aged 11 to 18 on its roll, now had a carefully-designed curriculum and "disruptionfree environment".

They said: "Pupils are proud of their school. They said that the school is ambitious and teachers want the best for them.

"Pupils said that they feel safe in school.

"Bullying is rare. However, if it occurs, it is dealt with effectively.

The school is a tolerant place where pupils are considerate and respectful of each other and their differences.

"Staff set high expectations for pupils’ behaviour. Pupils respond positively."

The report said staff helped pupils develop their interests and talents. They highlighted the choir, the scholars group and elite sports group with coaching from professional sportspeople. Staff are keen to acknowledge pupils’ achievements.

Inspectors also praised the "coherent and well-sequenced curriculum", drawn up after effective educational research by leaders who "thought carefully about what pupils need to know".

Teachers' strong subject knowledge, effective use of assessment and curriculum for children with special educational needs or disabilities was also praised.

The inspectors said: "The head teacher has an ambitious vision for the school. This is shared by staff, pupils and parents, who are overwhelmingly supportive of the school’s aims."

The report said the school could make further improvements to make more precise checks on pupils’ learning and create more opportunities for pupils to discuss subject content and debate ideas in a considered way.

Head teacher Natalie Wilcox said: “The success of Yate Academy is testament to the passion and tireless work of the whole school community.

"We are particularly delighted that our ambition for students to achieve academic excellence, as well as the quality of our character education, was highlighted in the report.”

Greenshaw Learning Trust chief executive Will Smith said: “Yate Academy has been on a rapid improvement journey and we are delighted for the school about this significant achievement. The community of Yate can be confident of the very best education provision, with the latest results putting the school in the top 1% in the UK.”

Shopping centre sold for £58 million THE new owners of Yate Shopping Centre are predicting a bright future.

The 31-acre site was bought for £58 million in February

by American investment company Magnetar Capital in partnership with Northdale Asset Management.

The centre, which houses the bulk of shops and leisure facilities in the town centre and has free parking for up to 1,400 cars, had been put up for sale last year by Jersey-based Crestbridge Corporate Trustees, with a reported price tag of £53m.

South Gloucestershire Council says it is looking forward to working with the new owners, having recently published a blueprint for the future development of the town.

The Yate Masterplan, approved by the council's cabinet last December, sets out the changes that could take place in Yate over the next 15 to 20 years,

including a new town square and modernised bus station.

It is understood that talks over future development of the centre are already underway between the new owners and other interested parties.

In a joint statement the new owners told the Voice: "Magnetar and Northdale are pleased to have acquired an asset of Yate's high quality.

"Magnetar and Northdale look forward to thoughtful engagement with the centre's customers and tenants, as well as the local government, to further strengthen the links between Yate and the community and deliver on the next phase of the centre's evolution."

Magnetar's European head Alan Shaffran described the centre as "a well-located and well-anchored property with a track record of producing stable income, despite retail and pandemic headwinds", adding:

"We look forward to working with all community stakeholders to make Yate a continued success."

Northdale partner Jon Taylor said: "The centre has proven resilient through the covid pandemic due to its strategic town centre location, affordable rents and good tenant mix, which is weighted toward community and convenience occupiers.

"We intend to work closely with local government to help enhance the centre and this area of Yate."

The council’s cabinet member for strategic infrastructure, Steve Reade, said: “Yate is our largest town in South Gloucestershire, with the shopping centre a popular, well-used hub within the community.

"We are keen to help enhance the unique identity of Yate; this is why we have prepared a new ambitious Masterplan, alongside local people, businesses and

"It will build on Yate’s existing character to make it an even more welcoming, healthy, sustainable and prosperous place to live, work and visit.

"We look forward to working with the new owners of Yate Shopping Centre on how their plans for the future can be integrated into our wider vision for the future of the town."

Marienella Phillips in rehearsals for Henry V

Marienella's big break A YATE actor and singer has taken to the West End stage alongside a Game of Thrones star.

Marienella Phillips is playing three roles in a production of Shakespeare’s Henry V at the Donmar Warehouse in London's Covent Garden.

The title role is played by Kit Harrington, who is best known for his role as Jon Snow in the epic fantasy TV series Game of Thrones but has also starred in recent Marvel superhero movie Eternals and the How to Train Your Dragon series.

Marienella, 28, plays the roles of Alice, Cambridge and Salisbury in Henry V and also sings as a mezzo-soprano in the month-long production, which runs until April 9.

Proud mum Nell said the role was the biggest so far for Marienella, who has performed locally at St Paul’s Church in Chipping Sodbury and as a guest singer for Yate Choral Society.

The former Tockington Manor School pupil studied at Bristol University and the Royal Welsh College of Music in Cardiff but her career was brought to a halt by the lockdown.

Nell said: "She took various jobs including as a waitress just to keep going. Eventually she got her big break and got an audition for Henry V. She is the youngest of the cast and we went to watch her on the press night – she was very happy.

"Throughout the pandemic her family and friends were all telling her not to give up and now she seems to have got her big opportunity."

Marienella has also sung with the Longborough Festival Opera and at Southwark Cathedral but has always dreamed of playing Maria in West Side Story.

She said: "I feel incredibly lucky to be working alongside such talented actors and seasoned professionals so soon out of college.

"Although Henry V focuses on the king’s journey, and Kit is a superb Henry, the company’s team mentality has been inspiring.

"We did weeks of military drill and circuit training to get us to move convincingly as soldiers, give context to the play but also unite us.

"We've been running for a few weeks now and it has been fascinating to see the different audience responses.

"The show touches on many important and current topics such as war, leadership, nationalism, identity and more.

"It’s been eye opening to be a part of a production that questions these themes and to create art that holds a mirror up to current social discussions, especially considering what is happening in Ukraine."

Marienella is hoping to work on more West End productions, and her summer plans include performing in the Playground Opera series touring primary schools making opera accessible to a younger audience.

Aldi plans withdrawn SUPERMARKET Aldi is having to look for another site to open in Yate after plans for it to move in to half of the building occupied by B&Q were withdrawn.

The German discount retailer had been lined up as a tenant for the site in Station Road, with B&Q staying on in a reduced store.

But the plans were opposed by neighbours who said early morning and late-night deliveries outside their windows would be "just horrific".

The previous owners of Yate Shopping centre had also objected to the plan, saying the new store would have "an adverse impact on the Primary Shopping Area within Yate Town Centre, both in terms of its effect on vitality and viability".

It was also opposed by Yate Town Council, which said there were already four large supermarkets within five minutes' walk of the site and another one would result in a "loss of diversity within the town centre", adding: "We have consulted local residents and there is a strong view that we have enough supermarkets, but will suffer from the loss of the only large DIY outlet."

South Gloucestershire Council gave site owner Harmsworth Pension Funds Trustees permission to convert half of the site for use as a supermarket, then at a later meeting allowed it to extend delivery times despite protests from residents and Yate Town Council, which said they were "unacceptable".

However despite winning the planning battle, Harmsworth has now withdrawn the plans after making a new deal with B&Q, which confirmed it had signed a new 15-year lease.

A spokesperson for Aldi confirmed that the plans had been withdrawn by the landlord.

She added: "We continue to look for an alternative site in the area."

Food waste shock PEOPLE are being asked to make more use of their food bins and recycling boxes after a survey found almost half of waste going into South Gloucestershire's black bins could be recycled.

The council takes samples from black bins across the district to find out what is being thrown into them by residents.

The annual survey found 44% of the contents of black bins could have been recycled in kerbside collections.

And food waste made up 29% of the total amount of waste being thrown away, despite having dedicated weekly collections, while black bins are only picked up once per fortnight.

The council said that while some types of food waste, such as fruit and veg peelings, eggshells and tea bags, were generally put out for recycling, many residents were still throwing bags of potatoes, loaves of bread and jars with food inside into the black bins.

Food that is collected for recycling in South Gloucestershire is processed in Bristol by GENeco, which extracts biogas to generate electricity and uses leftover material as a non-chemical farming fertiliser.

Council cabinet member Rachael Hunt said: "Recycling our food waste is easy, so we really want to see people taking more care to ensure it is placed in the correct bin.

“Recycle all of your food waste – plate scrapings, leftover pet food, food that’s off or past its best, peelings, eggshells, tea bags and coffee grounds. If you have a bag of veg that can’t be eaten or a mouldy loaf, you don’t need to take it out of the bag, just put it straight into your food recycling bin.”

The council says the proposals for the A432 Badminton Road will "build upon the Coalpit to Nibley Lane cycleway which is currently under construction".

The council describes the changes as: *Improvements to bus stops along the A432, as well as throughout Yate and Chipping Sodbury. *Improvements to the Park Lane and Beesmoor Road junctions in Coalpit Heath, including additional traffic lanes and improved facilities for cyclists and pedestrians. *A two-way cycle track with separate footway along the eastern side of the A432 between Coalpit Heath and the Kendleshire junction. *Junction improvements on the Y1 bus service route where buses regularly get stuck in traffic at busy times.

A further series of changes are planned to the A4174 Avon Ring Road from Wick Wick roundabout to UWE/Coldharbour Lane in Frenchay.

The consultation is open until April 20.

The council recently announced its programme of road improvements for the area.

In Chipping Sodbury and the surrounding villages, almost £660,000 will be spent on resurfacing roads and paths including Bath Road through Old Sodbury, Woodmans Vale and Commonmead Lane.

Almost £390,000 will be invested in the Yate area, including resurfacing of Stanshawes Crescent, Littledean and Lyndale Road. And the reopening of the right turn at the junction of Heron Way and Kennedy Way has also been confirmed.

n NEWS WINTERBOURNE Down Village Carnival will be graced with a flypast from one of Britain's iconic wartime aircraft.

A Lancaster bomber from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight promises to be a highlight of this year's event on the May Day bank holiday weekend.

This year's event is called Platinum Highlights, with a nod to the Queen's jubilee celebrations.

The carnival procession from Bradley Avenue along Harcombe Hill and Down Road takes place on Monday May 2, the final day of the event.

Starting at around 10am, the procession will head to the Methodist church and All Saints opposite, where events will take place until 4pm.

The flypast will take place at some point during Monday's events, with the final time still to be confirmed and dependent on the weather.

Down Road will be closed for the day and attractions in an around the churches include dance and falconry displays, music, shopping, beer and

As the Voice went to press more than 40 children from local schools had applied to be the carnival queen or king.

There will be prizes awarded to best fancy dress and best scarecrow, and this year's carnival will be raising money for charities Brace, Mind, The Trussell Trust and SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

New deputy police commissioner THE Avon & Somerset police and crime commissioner has appointed a deputy.

Claire Hiscott, a former Bristol City Council cabinet member who is the area chairman for Bristol and Gloucestershire Conservatives, is tasked with assisting PCC Mark Shelford, increasing engagement with residents and the policing family, and ensuring "continuity in unforeseen circumstances". Her appointment to the three-day-a-week role, with an annual salary of £39,051 – 45% of the PCC's £86,700 salary – was confirmed by the Police and Crime Panel on March 17.

Claire, a former Horfield ward city councillor who trained as a pharmacist and has just finished a long stint supporting the NHS COVID-19 vaccination programme, is a former school governor and is currently a trustee and safeguarding lead for Bristol Old Vic. She said: “I’m motivated to tackle inequality and increase opportunities for all; I see policing and criminal justice as an area where there is disproportionality and inequality in outcomes for different groups in society.

“I’m really focussed on protecting the most vulnerable groups in our society including the elderly, people with mental health issues and women and girls, particularly when it comes to violence against women and girls. From working in my pharmacy, I’ve interacted with people from all walks of life and understand how health, mental health and the circumstances they find themselves in can be influenced by their education, affluence and family life."

Voice readers help chronicle journey on the Frome

A FILM and podcast maker has published a series of programmes on the river Frome's journey through the area.

Christina Wheeler asked people to contact her if the river played a significant part in their life and her appeal was published in the Voice last summer.

She said: "The response to the article was amazing – phone calls and emails immediately came in.

"I’d originally hoped I might be able to meet up with two or three people for each programme, but in the end so many people came forward, with such strong stories, I couldn’t resist.

"I ended up with four stories in each programme and had to expand the series.’

After hours of interviewing, walking and editing, Christina's series, called River Journey: The Bristol Frome has now been launched in podcast format – downloadable audio which can also be listened to online.

Christina followed the river on its 20-mile journey from the source, in the Dodington estate near Tormarton, to its mouth in the centre of Bristol.

Christina Wheeler next to Nightingale Bridge in Frampton Cotterell On her journey she met people like Jean Ray, who grew up next to the river in Frampton Cotterell, in a household of nine

children. Jean remembers the year the river froze, and how her family walked on the ice all the way to Cog Mill.

Christina also met with Duncan Porter, from Winterbourne and Frome Environmental Group, who talked about the group’s work to improve biodiversity and nature, tackle plastic pollution and reduce the risk of flooding.

In each programme Christina met people who could tell her about the river's historic mills, weirs, hat-making industry, ancient bridges and how the Frome influenced the siting of Bristol Castle.

In the final programme she canoes from Snuff Mills to Eastville, and follows the course of the river once it has disappeared under the streets of Bristol.

Christina said: "The programme is as much about my journey as the river’s journey.

"I’ve learned so much by making this. It’s a river I have lived near for much of my life and I’d always wanted to know more about it.

"We’re so lucky to have this on our doorstep – we can walk all the way from Old Sodbury right into the heart of Bristol, and I really hope that I can help inspire people to go out and enjoy and learn more about what is close to them."

with fish and/or seafood, potatoes, bacon and corn. The recipe was supposedly brought by Breton fisherman to New England, Nova Scotia and along that coast.

It soon became a firm favourite, because of its versatility and quick preparation time.

You can prep it in the morning and reheat for your guests at an appropriate time. If doing this, leave out the cream or crème fraiche until just before serving.

Fast Fish Chowder

Serves 4 Ingredients: 4 rashers of smoked streaky bacon.

A small bunch of spring onions.

2 carrots, peeled and cut in chunky rings 500g red-skinned potatoes.

200g fillet of smoked haddock mixed with 100g salmon fillet, both skin off and pin boned 3 fresh bay leaves.

3 sprigs of fresh thyme.

1 litre of vegetable stock.

150ml single cream or crème fraiche 200g corn kernels – either frozen or tinned.

200g raw prawns or if you want to splash out, a few scallops 1 x 150g pack of matzo crackers or similar dry crackers (look in your supermarket in the specialist or organic section.) – optional.

Method: Finely chop the bacon and dry fry it in a deep frying pan until brown and crispy.

Trim and finely slice the spring onions and prep the carrots. Add to the pan with the bacon and stir.

Wash the potatoes and chop into 2cm chunks (no need to peel).

Add the potatoes to the pan and mix well, stirring often so that the

mixture doesn’t burn. Fry until golden brown.

Cover with the vegetable stock and using a medium heat, bring to the boil (uncovered).

Then put the lid on, turn down the heat to a simmer and cook for 12 minutes until the potatoes are cooked through.

Stir from time to time.

Once the potatoes are cooked, using a slotted spoon, remove about half and crush roughly with a potato masher.

Return to the pan. This will thicken the sauce nicely.

Add the smoked haddock and salmon (all in 1 piece – as it cooks it will naturally flak into smaller pieces) to the pan with 3 bay leaves and the leaves from 3 sprigs of thyme.

Add the single cream or crème fraiche, corn and the peeled prawns to the chowder and stir well.

Turn the heat up to bring the chowder back to bubbling hot.

Put the lid back on and turn the heat down to low.

Cook for 3-4 mins until the prawns are cooked through (they’ll go pink).

If using, serve the matzo crackers separately. Break and sprinkle some on top just before serving.

Serve with vegetables in season, crunchy carrots, leeks, green beans or dark green cabbage.

Warm words won’t fix the cost-of-living crisis EVERY month it seems to be getting worse.

Gas and electric bills are up and for everyone who uses heating oil, that’s off the scale too.

It’s rocketed 116 per cent.

I expect you, like me, are looking at your smart meter thinking it didn’t used to be like that a few months ago – and as for petrol…

Every month we also hear the Chancellor commenting. He is normally saying how he understands that life is tough for working families and pensioners. Really? Because as March turns to April and the cost of living crisis bites, and everything from the price of a stamp goes up, the Government has chosen this moment to deliberately introduce a series of measures that will make this crisis much, much worse.

They say April is the cruellest month, and this spring the Chancellor will again force up taxes, painfully whacking up National Insurance contributions. He’s chosen a tax on workers’ income, not any of the other options

like buying and selling property portfolios or stocks and shares.

Yet it’s not all doom and gloom on the economic front. There are plenty of great job vacancies in the region – many with good pay and prospects. One project I was excited to launch recently was aimed at West of England jobseekers in our burgeoning hospitality sector.

Jobs Connect was commissioned by the West of England Combined Authority that I lead, and built by Bath-based software company Cognisess. It will connect local people to jobs with top hospitality and tourism employers in the region.

A key project, aiming to relieve congestion, enhance journey times, and improve traffic flow through out town, has been the return of a right-hand turn along Heron Way. With similar arrangements already in place along Rodford Way, with the junction to Shire Way and Abbotswood, there was an anomaly at this junction, which could accommodate a right-hand turn for all motorists, if we could secure the right measures to make this safe for the community.

I am thrilled that with the support of the local community, we have now secured a return of the right-hand turn, which will

be accompanied by smart traffic lights to enable a regular yet safe flow of traffic onto Kennedy Way. It is already the case that buses, motorbikes, taxis and cyclists can use this right-hand turn, but with the investment we have now secured from South Gloucestershire Council, we can open up this vital route to all residents, easing gridlock and in turn improving air pollution throughout the area.

There were understandable reasons why the right-hand turn wasn’t working previously, and there were justified safety concerns, however with the Kennedy Way speed limit since reduced from 60mph to 40mph, and the carriageway now a single lane in each direction, residents have increasingly told

me that allowing vehicles to use the right-hand turn will reduce journey times and enable a more controlled exit of traffic from Heron Way. Reducing congestion in Chipping Sodbury and Yate will also help reduce pollution levels, improve air quality, and support a more environmentally-friendly road network.

The reopening of Heron Way’s right-turn is just one part of a range of investment announced in South Gloucestershire’s recent budget. Alongside the delivery of this infrastructure, the Council have announced £12 million to go towards pothole repairs and road resurfacing, new investment for a range of improvements along the A432 such as bus stop upgrades, further funding for the Bristol to

PUPILS at Iron Acton Primary School have been helping to ensure woodland in their area thrives for generations to come.

Pupils at the school have been nurturing young saplings, which they took on a whole school visit to Chilwood, a local wooded area.

Executive Headteacher Mike Riches said: "The children had been looking after oak trees at home over the winter months and they then had the opportunity to plant these in Chilwood as part of a regeneration project organised by local residents and council workers.

"Every child went to do their bit and will be returning periodically, to see the progress their tree has made in its growth.

"As a school we love to get involved in as much outdoor learning so this supported this incredibly well.

"In addition, our vision is to ‘have the courage to care’ so we were able to help children see this in action as they look after their local environment – something very high on everyone’s agenda at the moment."

Is COVID Over?

With the end of free universal NHS lateral flow tests, mandatory selfisolation and other public health measures, coupled with a warmer weather, it does feel like the much longed-for COVID freedom has arrived but has it really?

Case numbers rose as restrictions were lifted at the end of February, although daily death figures remain low. This is due to the successful rollout of the vaccination programme; Abbotswood Pharmacy is very proud to be part of this. The spring booster programme starting now offers a fourth dose to the most vulnerable, including the 75 years and over and all immunosuppressed people aged 12 years and above.

Everyone can still access their first, second, or third booster dose, while all children aged 5 to 11 are also now offered a dose.

While the vaccination programme is the cornerstone of the government strategy, with much debate about rolling back some of the other things, you and I are being asked to use our common sense – Do the Right Thing for Everyone.

Most people do not like mask-wearing, but it protects, especially the most vulnerable in our society. Health care settings continue to request this. You do not know if the person standing in front of you is receiving treatment for cancer or has a child or close relative who is. Consider the same in crowded places like supermarkets?

Alcohol hand gels – yes, that mantra, hand, face, and space. It has become a ritual, and you most likely still have access to supplies; please keep using them, and cut the spread.

While testing may not be free anymore, data shows a significant surge in demand before the free provision ended and if now at an affordable cost –taking a test before meeting up with people is a small price. Use up any stockpiles before they expire.

A traditional pub with an uncertain future

WHEN I first came to work in Yate in 2000 there were deemed to be three traditional pubs of great antiquity, namely the White Lion, the Swan and the Railway.

The Lawns and Stanshawes Court, while in 19th century buildings, are relative newcomers on the pub scene: the Lawns opened in 1970 and Stanshawes in 1965.

As I daily walk past an empty White Lion, I can reflect on the changes wrought on the local pub scene in the last 20 years.

Two of the most prominent pubs in Yate when I arrived were the Railway, serving the western side of the town, and the Swan in the middle. Both were creations of the Victorian era and as such were a constant reminder to the modern shopper that Yate was indeed “more than a new town”.

Today, the White Lion cuts a forlorn appearance and hopefully its closure from December 2020 is temporary. It would certainly be a body blow for local heritage. It is one of the few listed buildings in

Yate which is neither a church nor a farm. The hulking wooden beams inside the building are a testimony to Yate’s only pre-Victorian public house.

The White Lion had been an inn and pub since the earlier half of the 17th century. Relatively little is known of its earliest history, but it clearly emerged as a significant local coaching inn. As the turnpike road system flourished, the White Lion was at a key road junction between modern day Station Road and Church Road, and was also adjacent to the actual turnpike building for receiving the tolls.

Although the White Lion site was smaller than the one we know today, it would nevertheless have stood out in the centre of the parish and would no doubt have been a busy hub for some of the time. It enjoyed the patronage of the local hunt, and we know the Yate Heritage Centre building was used as stabling in the later 19th century at least.

The White Lion was also the venue for a “share out benefits” society, a sickness society

Drinkers at the White Lion in 1919 providing some cover for its members. In some years, the profits of the society were spent on a procession around the parish, complete with silk banners, and a fete, games and dancing.

Despite stiffer competition from other pubs in the area in the 20th century, the White Lion remained a cut above other Yate pubs for many years and continued to entertain the hunt into the 1920s. As late as 1970, the White Lion welcomed the Duke of Beaufort to open their

refurbishment.

Today, the future of the White Lion and many other empty pubs is unclear. All future pub owners have to contend with a changing market, and so many venues have had to withstand the financial onslaught of the Covid pandemic. Let us hope that Yate’s most venerable pub will return in the future - something many of us would happily drink to.

Rape investigation

MP was a help I WAS extremely surprised to read the letter from Dean Masters entitled "MP should be here" (Voice, March) and wondered if he was referring to the same MP as the Luke Hall that has greatly helped me on two occasions since moving to this area just over three years ago.

When my wife and I moved from Yorkshire, our new GP still hadn't received our medical records after four months.

After contacting Luke Hall, who wrote to the Head of NHS England on our behalf, our new GP received our medical records two weeks later.

More recently, I still hadn't received a renewed drivers' licence, nine months after making a renewal application. After contacting Luke Hall, who wrote to the DVLA on my behalf, my new licence was received about 2 weeks later.

As far as I'm concerned, Luke Hall is providing an excellent service to his constituents. I can understand fully that all MPs have other public duties to perform outside their constituencies, but provided that they are also undertaking their duties within their constituencies, as has clearly been my experience, I can see no problem with this.

Politicians insulated from cost of living crisis AFTER reading Dan Norris’s column in your March edition I think that maybe you should mention his massive pay increase that he has received over the next four years.

He used his column to say the government was not doing enough to help people with the cost of living crisis – it’s fine for him when he’s getting £5,000-a-year pay rise every year for four years.

POLICE are investigating a report that a woman was raped in Yate.

The incident took place on the night of February 27 to 28.

After an earlier appeal was made and high-visibility patrols carried out, officers now say they do not believe there is a risk to the local community.

Detective Chief Inspector James Francomb said: "Specialist investigators are keeping the victim in this case updated with the progress of our inquiry and are ensuring she has any help she may need, including access to counselling and health services.

“We know reports of this kind are concerning for the wider public and so I’d also like to reassure people that as a result of the enquiries we’ve carried out to date, we’re confident there is no risk to the local community.”

Easter Egg Extravaganza 2022 Yate Town Council (YTC) and the Friends of Kingsgate Park are delighted that we are able to host the popular Easter Egg Hunt and Bonnet Competition in person this year, at Kingsgate Park, Yate, on Monday 18th April 2022, commencing at 10am.

St George’s Day Celebrations – Yate Heritage Centre The 2022 St George Celebrations will be a wonderful community celebration of St George at Yate Heritage Centre and St Mary’s Green on 23rd April 2022 from 10.30am until 4.30pm.

It will be a full day of English style entertainment with a unique blend of community involvement and medieval history.

Highlights include medieval demonstrations from the Company of Chivalry, and we welcome the Bristol Waites singing tudor music. n COMMUNITY NEWS Commissioner visits Neighbourhood Watch POLICE and crime commissioner Mark Shelford accepted an invitation from Chipping Sodbury’s longest-running Neighbourhood Watch to attend our 31st annual general meeting.

The Elms estate Neighbourhood Watch members were praised by Mark for providing the sort of link between the public and the police, working in partnership, which he highly values.

This is reflected in the good relationships the Elms NHW have with their local police officers.

Mark explained his strategy to promote a police force which focuses on current issues which matter to the public, whether this is antisocial behaviour, car crime, drug problems, cybercrime, domestic violence or child exploitation.

He emphasised the goal was preventing crime, not catching criminals. If the police stop crime before it happens, we don’t have to punish citizens or suppress their rights.

The members were reassured that there was an increase in police recruitment and training. Mark said that although recruitment is vibrant, the right mix of candidates was yet to be achieved.

LOCKDOWN happened pretty quickly – two days before u3a’s History and Social Studies group were due to meet back in March 2020.

The group decided they would record their experiences as the situation unfolded.

Jenny Smith, who took on the task of compiling a blog, said: "We invited not just our History and Social Studies group, but the whole of our u3a to contribute. Two years on, we have produced a 52-page booklet containing diary entries, stories, poems, essays and photographs."

Steve's very early Christmas present AS a self-confessed fan of Christmas, author Steve Orchard unashamedly decided that his first novel should focus on his favourite season of the year.

Christmas Times in Berrybridge might not be topical right now as we head in to spring but 68-year-old Steve, from Horton, reckons he will have a ready-made audience every year as the festive season comes around.

He describes the 30,000 word novella as a fictional tale of time travel but with a warmth and uplifting heart, and a twist at the end.

Although the place names are fictional Steve reckons that local readers will recognise parts of Chipping Sodbury, Yate and Horton as the story unfolds.

He said: "I always have been a Christmas fan and every year I always look for a nice book to read to get me in the mood.

"I’ve got five grandchildren and we enjoy Christmas a lot. But I used to find that every time I went to the book shop all the Christmas books were aimed at ladies – romantic fiction, I suppose.

"So it was frustrating trying to find something fresh to read which is how I came up with the idea.

"I hope people will find the story heartwarming and uplifting and accessible to people who don’t want to wade through an 80,000 novel but would read something

which is smaller. It’s easy to pick up and read – a coffee table novella really."

Steve says that many of his ideas were formed in his head during long walks with his dog. The story is told in the first person by the leading character Lee Scott, and involves time travel which takes him back from 2019 to 1959. Lee is 29, has been brought up in foster care and done a little time in prison, and when he gets out he wants to change his life.

Without giving the plot away, Steve admits that because he is such a Christmas fan the story has to have a happy ending.

He said: "I have been told by those who have read it that it is a very unexpected twist at the end, which they have enjoyed.

"Despite the title, it’s not really all jingle bells and Christmassy – it’s a winter tale around Christmas."

Steve says he may write a sequel looking at spring or summertime in Berrybridge, but for now he is happy to see the results of his work.

The book is available as a paperback from Amazon or as a Kindle e-book.

Join the Easter trail

AN Easter trail is being run around Chipping Sodbury to keep children entertained over the holidays.

The theme of the event is The Wind in the Willows, and children can win a £10 book token by following the trail, collecting letters and working out the name of a character from the famous story.

There will be one prize for each age group: 2-4 years, 5-7 years and 8-11 years.

Chipping Sodbury Library and Sodbury in Bloom are running the event, with sponsorship from Chipping Sodbury Chamber of Commerce.

It runs from April 9 to 22 and will take families on a walk round Chipping Sodbury to the places Sodbury in Bloom looks after.

Forms can be downloaded from Chipping Sodbury Library's Facebook page and Sodbury in Bloom’s Facebook page.

Hard copies can be picked up from the library, Waitrose, Artingstalls and Jon Howell butchers.

As well as the trail, the library will be holding two sessions of craft activities for children based on The Wind in the Willows, on April 12 and April 20, making masks and listening to an excerpt from the book.

Sessions last from 10am until noon, take place in the Watkins Room in the Old Grammar School Rooms and can be booked at the library. *YATE Library is running Easter craft activities, suitable for children aged four to 10, on April 12 and April 19 from 10.30-11.30am.

Craft bags are available to collect and take home from the library from April 7.

Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club IN March we learned that Sean Suleman, one of the founders of the Blonde Angel Street Team, had been recognised for his selfless dedication to help homeless people, developing a network of volunteer helpers.

Our club jointly submitted his nomination, and he will receive his award at the Rotary Champions’ annual gala on May 7 at Birmingham NEC, as part of Volunteer Expo Live.

District governor Graham Ogden has presented a certificate to our club recognising its contribution to the End Polio Now project.

The worldwide Rotary movement is making donations, financial and otherwise, to support the Ukrainian people placed in significant hardship by the relentless barbaric attack by Russian troops.

Our club has donated £2,000 to the Disaster Emergency Committee appeal.

We have also made a financial donation to Buzz Club, a Stroud-based organisation offering education to young people on bees and the benefits they provide.

Preparations for our inaugural Health and Wellbeing Day on April 23 in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall (see our poster on page 3) are proceeding well.

Over 20 organisations have agreed to participate to explain how their activities can support healthier living and there is space for more.

On May 26 the club is organising a charity golf day at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club to raise money for Freewheelers EVS, the local blood bike charity.

Club members and partners enjoyed an evening of skittles, raising funds for the Ukrainian appeal, at the Horton Social Club in mid-March. The highest scorer was Inner Wheeler Binny Fraser, with an impressive 38 over 4 legs.

We enjoyed a make-up demonstration by Charlotte Atwood. Everyone was mesmerised by her wonderful face painting using her daughter as a model. The flowers were stunning. Charlotte then spent time answering questions on face art, make-up and skin care.

In the coming months we are looking forward to a firepit evening, a coffee social and a supper and cocktail evening.

Our next meeting will be on 11 April when we will have an Easter decorating competition and an Easter quiz. A reminder – we will be meeting at Poole Court.

n SPORT Home form lets Bluebells down A RUN of five home games without a win has hit Yate Town's playoff chances.

The three most recent home games have all been defeats and while two have been to top sides – a 4-0 reverse to thirdplaced Metropolitan Police and a 2-0 loss to second-placed Farnborough - the Bluebells also lost 2-1 to lower-placed Tiverton Town, who played half of the match with ten men.

Yate had beaten both Tiverton and Farnborough away since the turn of the year, and the team's away performance has been keeping them in the play-off hunt, with a 5-0 thrashing of bottom side Wimborne Town and a 2-1 win over Hendon putting them in 7th place in the Southern League Premier South division as the Voice went to press.

The regular season is due to end on April 23, with a home game against playoff rivals Gosport Borough at 3pm.

Gymnasts win four world medals TWO gymnasts from Yate's King Edmund Acro club have returned from the world championships with four medals.

Dylan Howells and Tasha Hutchinson were part of the Great Britain team competing at this year's FIG Acrobatic Gymnastics World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, in March.

Competing in the mixed pairs' balance, dynamic and combined competitions, they won silver in the balance and bronze in the dynamic finals, and recorded their highest ever score in the combined final after a "near-perfect" routine, taking another silver and finishing fractionally behind the Belgian team who won gold.

The pair's performance helped Great Britain to a team bronze medal.

Dylan and Tasha travel from Wales and Oxford respectively to train at Yate five days a week with coach Nikki Thorne, who said: "This pair have unbelievable talent – mixed with hard work, dedication, commitment and determination, it has helped this amazing partnership achieve the potential the coaching team knew they had.

"This level of commitment and support from family shows what can be achieved if everyone pulls in the same direction."

Club manager Mark Thorne, who travelled to Baku to support the GB team, said: "This is right up there with some of the best achievements the club or country have ever produced – and over the years,
