School placed in special measures to become an academy THE headteacher of Tyndale Primary School in Yate has vowed to see it improve after it was assessed as inadequate by Ofsted.

Now in special measures as a result of the recent inspection, Tyndale will also become an academy to meet Government policy on poorly rated schools.

The primary had previously been judged as good but Ofsted said it had undergone a period of

considerable instability in recent years, with several changes of leadership and teaching staff.

Standards had fallen “significantly” as a result and weak teaching resulted in too few pupils reaching expected or higher standards at the end of each key stage.

Headteacher Angie Ritchie said: “Tyndale needs stability and it is my intention to continue to lead this school

on its continued journey of improvement.”

She said there were signs of improvement and she took comfort from Ofsted recognising that the school had been working hard towards improving teaching and learning.

Food growing on theof Business group’s charity menu Thornbury the yearatgets £2,500 boost open meeting ANYONE interested in producing their own vegetables, fruit and salad is invited to an open meeting of the Grow Your Own Food Group in Thornbury.

The group was set up to share knowledge about food gardening and last year held two successful open meetings, which resulted in new members joining.

With the start of the new growing season, the exercise is being repeated, with the event taking place in The Chantry, Castle Street, on Thursday, March 30, from 7.30pm-9pm.

FUND raising events helped the Sodbury and Yate Business Association (SYBA) collect nearly £2,500 for local charity Brain Tumour Support.

The Thornbury-based organisation has been the association’s charity of the year, with a range of activities held to raise cash for its work.

The money will be used to look after patients, their families and carers when they are first diagnosed with a brain tumour.

A representative from the charity, who received a cheque from SYBA at a recent presentation, said it also offered information, guidance, support groups and a personalised service to help care for people with the condition.

Primary school judged inadequate by Ofsted to become an academy

A YATE school is set to become an academy after being placed in special measures by education watchdog Ofsted.

Tyndale Primary School was judged to be inadequate after a recent inspection.

School leaders said they were “extremely disappointed” with the overall outcome and headteacher Angie Ritchie, who joined the school in 2016, pledged to stay on and see it improved.

In a letter to parents and carers, she said: “Over the past year, many of you have made numerous comments about the positive changes we have made and many of you have shared with us that you are pleased with your child’s improved progress.

“The end of year results will prove we are well on the way to

ensuring Tyndale is a successful school.

“Tyndale needs stability and it is my intention to continue to lead this school on its continued journey of improvement.”

In a statement from Mrs Ritchie and governors, they said Government policy was that all schools placed in special measures should become academies.

They said: “The governing body at Tyndale will be working with the local authority and the regional schools commissioner to find the best academy sponsor for the school.

Ofsted’s report showed that the school in Tyndale Avenue had dropped from a rating of good at its previous inspection to inadequate.

It said standards had declined

significantly and weak teaching resulted in too few pupils reaching expected or higher standards at the end of each key stage.

Lead inspector Catherine Beeks said: “The school has undergone a period of considerable instability in recent years, with several changes of leadership and teaching staff.

“Current leaders and governors have worked hard to eliminate weak teaching but their actions have not been swift enough to ensure that pupils make strong progress in all subjects.

“Disadvantaged pupils and pupils who have special education needs or disabilities make slow progress because they are catching up from a legacy of ineffective teaching.”

She said too few pupils, especially the most able, achieved of their best, the curriculum was poorly planned and monitored and governors were unclear about how the school needed to improve.

But she said the head and her deputy had worked hard to address pupils’ behaviour and their determination had led to changes which had improved the culture of the school.

It also said pupils were well looked after, polite and welcoming.

Deborah Williams, chairwoman of governors, said: “We are unwavering in our commitment to turn the school around and improve outcomes for all our pupils.”

Outstanding rating from inspector for village pre-school nursery A CHILDREN’S nursery in Tormarton has been rated outstanding by Ofsted.

Inspector Sarah Peacock said the Pumpkins Pre-school Nursery, which meets in Tormarton Village Hall, had an “inspirational leadership team” that was “exceptionally motivated and committed to helping children to achieve the best possible outcomes”.

She said children’s progress was monitored by the manager and staff meticulously and all children made rapid progress in their learning and development.

Staff were said to have excellent teaching skills and they planned a wide range of stimulating activities that motivated children to learn.

Ms Peacock said children behaved “exceptionally well” and staff build excellent partnerships with parents and other professionals.

Work day clears up saved open space Easter A GROUP of volunteers that included children and pensioners turned out for a work morning on land recently bought by Yate Town Council to stop it being developed.

The landlocked open space to the rear of Cambrian Drive was

at the centre of a long campaign to prevent houses being built on it.

Two planning appeals against South Gloucestershire Council’s refusal to allow the building of 18 homes on the plot were lost by Woodstock Homes.

Residents and councillors spring clean the Cambrian Drive land.

Yate councillors had strongly opposed the proposals and after the second planning inquiry, approached the landowner and acquired the land for £35,000.

The work day was an early step towards restoring the site for the public to enjoy.

Residents joined councillors to collect litter, clear a path and cut back brambles.

Yate mayor John Ford said: “It was a brilliant morning - the best turnout we have ever had for a spring clean. We had residents of all ages, from eight to 80. I want to thank everyone who helped.”

Further work to be carried out will include planting and more cutting back of overgrown hedges.

TWO weeks of entertainment have been planned for Yate Shopping Centre for Easter and the school holidays.

Events include craft workshops and a visit by White Rabbit and Alice to run competitions and present prizes.

Centre manager Andrew Lowrey said: ”Easter is always a busy time for the shopping centre and children’s entertainment is always at the forefront of our activities.”

Park conservation Major cash boost for team looking for Yate play projects extra volunteers

A CONSERVATION group is hoping to recruit more volunteers to help it maintain Lilliput Park in Chipping Sodbury.

The group meets on the first Tuesday and the fourth Saturday of the month throughout the year and needs help with various outdoor tasks, from general gardening and pruning to cutting brambles and planting hedges,

trees, shrubs, bulbs and flowers.

The group is also involved in litter picking and would welcome help from anyone, including accompanied children.

The next Tuesday session is on April 3 and runs for a couple of hours from 10am. The first Saturday meeting is on April 28, starting at the same time.

The group meets at the Kingfisher entrance to the park.

FUNDING has been awarded to Yate Town Council for three outdoor play projects costing more than £200,000.

The council made a successful bid for the cash, which comes from allocations linked to house building schemes and forming part of the planning consent process.

Known as section 106 money, it is set aside for the funding of outdoor sport and play provision in areas surrounding new homes in Yate, such as development at Peg Hill and in the north of the town.

The successful projects are for the installation of informal play equipment at Abbotswood to the value of £89,535; extra equipment, signage and landscaping at Howard Lewis Play Area for £49,628 and £72,380 for the installation of outdoor exercise equipment at

Kingsgate Park.

The council said the Howard Lewis project would be the first to progress as public consultation has already taken place.

The Abbotswood and Kingsgate projects will proceed once consultation has been undertaken on the design and installation stages.

Before its most recent success in gaining section 106 money, the council also secured £25,370 to improve the play area at Brimsham Park.

First partners unveiled for Literary Festival THE first sponsorship deals have been announced for the Cotswold Edge Literary Festival.

The Olympus Academy Trust and the Willow Brook Shopping Centre are both backing the week long event in June.

The Olympus Academy Trust, which has just taken over the running of Winterbourne International Academy, also

runs several other schools in South Gloucestershire, including Bradley Stoke Community School.

As part of the link up. WIA will be hosting an event for primary schools in the area with children’s writer AF Harold.

Honour for Shopmobility volunteer A VOLUNTEER with the Yatebased Shopmobility scheme was among nearly 30 unsung heroes recognised for their contribution to South Gloucestershire’s communities.

The community awards are presented each year

by South Gloucestershire Council’s chairman or woman at a ceremony attended by the winners and their families.

Ann Aplin, of Iron Acton, was recognised for her extensive local volunteering, having been nominated by those at Shopmobility - a service that allows people with mobility problems to maintain their

independence by hiring mobility scooters and wheelchairs so they can use town services and the shopping centre facilities.

Ann said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed volunteering for a charity that helps people to be included in such everyday activities as shopping, visiting banks, hairdressers, dentists and meeting up with friends at cafes, which so many of us take for granted."

Shopmobility South Gloucestershire vice-chairman, David Bell, said: "We are delighted that Ann has won this award - she thoroughly deserves it.

“She volunteered as a trustee for many years and volunteered in the office dealing with clients and hiring out our scooters and wheelchairs."

The service is based in Yate Library, and attracts users from all over South Gloucestershire, and beyond.

The awards were presented to recipients at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College’s WISE Campus by the council’s current chairman, Ian Blair.

Also present were the lord lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Dame Janet Trotter, and vicelord lieutenant, Robert Bernays.

Councillor Blair said: “These awards are a great way to say thank you to some of the many volunteers who make South Gloucestershire such a great place to live and work.

“While reading through and shortlisting the nominations, it was obvious that those put forward for an award are held in high esteem in their local communities.

“The positive impact which their commitment and hard work has on others is extremely uplifting and encouraging.”

Easter fun at bank holiday event Yate restaurant set for closure

Easter fun at bank holiday event.

YATE’S Kingsgate Park is to host its annual Easter Egg Extravaganza on Easter Monday, 2 April.

The event, which starts at 10am, is organised by the Friends of Kingsgate Park and

Yate Town Council. It’s open to all children under 12 years and entrance is free. A separate hunt area within the park caters for children aged 5 and under.

Each child completing the treasure hunt will receive a

chocolate Easter egg.

The event also includes an Easter bonnet parade that takes place at 11.00 am (registration

THE Yate branch of Italian restaurant chain Prezzo is among 94 around the country set to close after the company announced a restructuring plan.

Based in the Riverside extension to Yate Shopping Centre, the restaurant only opened a little more than two years ago in November 2015.

But the chain hopes that by closing nearly a third of its restaurants, it will have a long term future for its business.

Silver award for Yate GP practice

A YATE GP practice has received a new award for supporting carers and helping patients with dementia.

Wellington Road Family Practice is one of the first GP surgeries to be presented with the South Gloucestershire award, which has three levels of recognition - gold, silver and bronze.

A silver award has been given to the practice to show it has taken action to identify and support carers and to assist patients with dementia.

The charity Carers Support Centre, with South Gloucestershire Public Health and the local clinical commissioning group, launched the award scheme.

When assessed, practices are given points for providing important information on local services, offering flexible appointments and giving special training to staff.

Helen Tillman, practice manager at Wellington Road, said: “This award is an opportunity for the practice to check that we are providing the best possible care and support to our patients and carers.”

Professor Mark Pietroni, director of public health for South Gloucestershire, said: "Many people are carers and they make a huge contribution to ensuring that people are well looked after.

“Looking after carers is important as well. The award encourages and recognises best practice in local GP surgeries in South Gloucestershire."

Flying the flag in Yate for military association A CEREMONY to be held in Yate will involve the blessing of a new standard of one of the oldest branches of the Royal Engineers Association in the country.

The Bristol branch will hold the event in St Mary’s Church on Sunday, April 29, at 10.45am, with assembly from 10.15am.

The primary function of the association is to help serving sappers, veterans and their families who have fallen on hard times.

Its work has continued for more than 100 years and with an ever-increasing number of wounded sappers returning from operations and conflicts around the world, its role is still vital.

All regular, army reserve, and ex-sappers are welcome to attend the ceremony, for which the dress code is dress berets, blazers and medals.

Abbotswood to get a spring clean WILDFLOWERS will be planted, benches cleaned and shrubs cut back dring a spring clean-up day in Abbotswood, Yate.

Groups of volunteers have been invited to go along to help carry out the work on Saturday, April 14.

They can join in any time from 11am-3pm at the Abbotswood shops, where tools and gloves will be provided, along with free refreshments.

But community development officer Rob Elliott advised those taking part to wear suitable clothing and footwear that may get dirty.

Other tasks to be completed during the day include the painting of planters, pulling up weeds and spreading bark on the paths of the allotment plot next to St Nicholas Church.

The road awaits scooter riders

Milly crowned festival princess

SCOOTER riders will take to the road at the next meeting of Yate and Sodbury Scooter Club as it enters its third year of activities.

The owners get together on the third Sunday of the month at the Brimsham Park pub, Lark Rise, Yate, at 9.30am.

After breakfast, with weather permitting, they climb on board their machines for a ride around the area.

Club spokesman Kevin Milford said: “This year we hope to be meeting with other scooter clubs from the South West and participating in local and national scooter rallies.”

The next gathering will be on Sunday, April 15, and anyone who would like to consider becoming a member is welcome to go along.

CHIPPING Sodbury School pupil Milly Sady has been chosen as the town’s festival princess.

Milly, 12, will be supported in her role by attendants Charlotte Hayward, 11, who attends Raysfield Junior School, and nine-year-old Daisy Jones, of St John's Mead Primary School.

Festival chairwoman Kate Cox said this year’s annual event would run from June 8-17, with a programme drawn up to suit as many tastes as possible.

A new feature will be a talent show on Sunday, June 10, and the popular street fair and carnival is expected to bring in the usual crowds.

Copies of the programme, as well as posters, have been distributed around the town and there are also regular updates on the festival’s Facebook page.

Kingsgate Park celebrates award ONE of Yate’s best loved parks has been awarded five stars in a Britain in Bloom competition. Kingsgate Park won the accolade in the Pride of Parks category of the competition run by The Royal Horticultural Society.

STUDENTS from Chipping Sodbury and Brimsham Green schools did battle with words when they took part in a public speaking and debating competition.

The annual Youth Speaks challenge is organised by Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club and this year’s contest involved 12 and 13-year-old pupils arguing for and against several weighty topics - from social deprivation to torture.

The judges decided the best debating team comprised Adi Schinde and Ben Bevan, who argued successfully that science was a threat to humanity.

by Cameron Stillie, while Jack Baker won over the judges with defence of the opinion that bribery was sometimes acceptable.

Keith Pattison, chairman of the Rotary club’s youth projects committee, said: “These were difficult subjects to tackle.

“The students undertook a considerable amount of research to enable them to argue their case.”

Brimsham Green headteacher Kim Garland and Katherine Turner, head of Chipping Sodbury, said the event was a valuable extra-curricular event for the students.

Actonians choose Hobson’s Choice

Townswomen’s Guild in charity donation

THE Actonians drama group are busy working on their spring production of Hobson’s Choice, a classic comedy set in Lancashire.

The unlikely love story combines comedy with romance as it follows the lives and loves of bootmaker Henry, Horatio Hobson and his three daughters. When Hobson’s eldest daughter, Maggie, becomes intent on marrying long suffering boot maker, Willie Mossop, Hobson’s future looks uncertain.

The play runs from the 17 to 19 May at Iron Acton Village Hall.

School or continued at their local primary school, normally run by the Church of England. The 1950s ushered in a raft of changes at the heart of which were new Secondary Moderns. After 1950 every child could go to a secondary school whether or not they passed the grammar school entrance exam. Unlike the earlier elementary schools, there was a teacher for each subject – a proper secondary school.

The Secondary Modern and Grammar School system existed locally up to the 1970s. The chief criticism was that the system created a divide between pupils.

Academic children went to Sodbury Grammar. Secondary Modern pupils had a more vocational curriculum and typically went straight into local farming and industrial jobs. The Secondary Modern syllabus was more limited in many respects; no foreign languages were taught in the 1950s and they were unable to

Post-War Schools of Yate and Sodbury Our local schools have changed out of all recognition over the last few decades, with new buildings, the demise of grammar schools and the emergence of academies.

As a result we are hosting a display looking at the schools which grew out of the post-war years in Sodbury and Yate. In 1951, there was one secondary school and 3 other schools. In 2018, there are 3 comprehensives and 13 primary schools - a lot of schools even taking into account the closure of Rodford Primary School in 2009.

Grammar versus Secondary Modern Schools Modern education would be unrecognisable to the schoolchildren of even 40 years ago, not least those who went to Secondary Modern Schools.

The resources of the two local schools differed markedly in sport and school trips. In the early 1950s, Grammar School children were increasingly able to go abroad including skiing trips in France. At the Secondary Modern there were trips to Avonmouth to see animal feed units.

Bridging the Gap By 1970, both Sodbury Grammar School and King Edmund’s had become comprehensives and in theory were on a par. Yet reputations are difficult to shed.

The new Sodbury Comprehensive for a while retained the glow of the top school, whilst King Edmund’s was often still regarding as the Secondary Modern. Naturally, both schools had many positive features but the Secondary Modern/ Grammar School divide arguably blighted local schools for years to come.

Sodbury Players’ youth members pay tribute to the fallen at Ypres

THREE young actors who are about to appear in a World War One drama in Chipping Sodbury paid their respects to the fallen during a school visit to Ypres in Belgium.

Lauren Soper and Abi Hurford, both 18, and Dan Gregor, 16, laid a tribute at the Menin Gate, which bears the names of more than 54,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers who died before August 16, 1917, and have no known grave.

The youngsters are among the cast of the Sodbury Players’ production of Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo, which will run in May. Its director, Ross Brown, said: “It was such a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives in the war and even more poignant as our play is about those who fought and died at Ypres.

“It is fantastic that these young people are so engaged in our history through their involvement with drama and Sodbury Players. It really is bringing the story of the First World War alive during the centenary of its ending.”

Private Peaceful will run from May 16-19 in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall.

Golfers to swing The Blues Band - 39 Years on the into action to road and heading for Thornbury help prostate cancer charity GOLFERS have the chance to raise funds to help in the fight against prostate cancer.

A charity golf day has been organised by Yate and District Rotary Club, which has invited players to join its members on the tees at Chipping Sodbury's golf course.

The event takes place on Thursday, May 24, with money raised going to the charity Prostate Cancer UK and the Prostate Cancer Care Appeal at Southmead Hospital, which was set up to buy a second surgery robot.

THE Blues Band is to appear at the Armstrong Hall in Thornbury on June 1 as they celebrate their 39th year together in 2018.

Band members Paul Jones, Dave Kelly, Tom McGuinness, Rob Townsend and Gary Fletcher are still pulling in audiences with their showmanship and virtuosity.

Many of the Blues Band’s younger fans weren’t born when these five musicians, already music industry veterans, decided to fly in the face of musical fashion in 1979 and form a band ‘just to play the blues’.

n NEWS ON 10 April 2018 Chipping Sodbury Music Society will be bringing the Dominic Alldis Trio to Chipping Sodbury.

The Trio features pianist and arranger Dominic Alldis, former Ronnie Scott’s bassist Andrew Cleyndert and former Loose Tubes drummer Martin France, who will be performing on stage from 7.30 pm. They specialise in jazz arrangements of classical themes, folk songs, jazz standards and original compositions.

Dominic Alldis has built a unique musical career over 30 years, spanning the rich and varied musical worlds of classical music, jazz piano and cabaret singing. Equally at home with a conductor’s baton in hand, performing with his jazz trio or entertaining an audience with songs at the piano, Dominic’s fluency in many different musical languages and flair for bringing them together in a distinctive way puts him in a category all of his own.

Andrew Cleyndert has toured with bands led by many of the major figures of British

Jazz Meets Classical

and American jazz, including Bobby Wellins, Don Weller, Red Rodney, Bud Shank, Gene Harris and Annie Ross. In the early 90s he become a member of the Ronnie Scott Quartet and until his recent death was bassist in the groups of British jazz legend Stan Tracey. Andrew and

Dominic have been performing together in numerous ensembles since 1985. In 2017 Andrew was short-listed for the Double Bass section of the British Jazz Awards.

Martin France has played with many of the world's finest jazz musicians in over forty

countries worldwide. A turning point in his early career was his role within the Eighties big band Loose Tubes, where he began a longstanding partnership with many of its members, in particular jazz composer and pianist Django Bates. Martin has performed and recorded with Elvis Costello, David Gilmour, John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland and Lee Konitz.

n PETER'S VISION THE book ‘I Can Read with My Eyes Shut’ was apparently written after children’s writer Dr Seuss started to need glasses to help his failing eye sight. He has been quoted many times from this book (which he dedicated to his eye specialist).

I like his encouragement to his readers, “The more that you read, the more things you will know.

The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go”.

Good advice, but suppose you find reading difficult, what then?

Well if the issue you have is just that your arms are not quite long enough anymore then come see us and we can fix you up with a pair of glasses to bring your close vision back into sharp focus.

If, as for many of our younger patients, you just find reading a challenge & chore rather than a pleasure then you should come and see us as well! I read an interesting article recently. The author was writing about children & young people who either find reading more difficult than they should or have a reading ability lower than expected.

reported that three quarters (that’s a lot!) of those with reading difficulties had passed a normal sight test as they had good sight, but still had difficulty reading. What’s this all about you may say? Well to those in the know, vision is about so much more than just sight.

Seeing and identifying a few letters on the wall chart or reading card is not always a great indicator of actual visual performance & reading ability.

The author goes on to say that when they gave each of these

patients with reading difficulties a complete binocular vision assessment they found many had binocular vision problems or visual stress; to quote a colleague ‘eyes that were just not friends!’

So if you, or a (young) person you know finds reading more difficult than it should be what next? May I present our eye exam (NHS funded if U16). This is more in-depth that a standard sight test, and while not a full binocular vision assessment, we can certainly look for the signs of underlying

visual stress or binocular vision problems and either prescribe glasses to help or arrange further assessment to get to the root of the reading difficulties.

Members are six times less likely to burgled, while joining helps to bring people together and can lead to a discount in home insurance. Support for care leavers 1625 Independent People (1625ip) and South Gloucestershire Council have announced a partnership aimed at kick-starting the journeys into learning and employment of 200 young people leaving care.

The initiative, Reboot West, will support young people to access work experience, jobs, apprenticeships and mentoring, and is calling on businesses across the South West to get involved.

Reboot West is a partnership between 1625ip, four local authorities - South Gloucestershire Council, Bristol City Council, Bath & North East Somerset Council, North Somerset Council - and social investor Bridges Fund Management (Bridges).

n NEWS A student from the University of the West of England has won a local art prize.

Post-graduate student Emily Ketteringham won ÂŁ1,000 from The Arts Society Severn Valley.

Emily is currently studying for an MA in Design. As part of this she wanted to develop her concept of concrete pebbles with the aim of adding fibre optics so they light up when they are handled. The prize was to be used to pay for her materials.

Club bids to boost charity fund with auction A GRAND charity auction organised by Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club is hoped to be as successful as a sponsored abseil completed by several members six months ago.

The abseil of more than 100ft down the side of Southmead Hospital’s Brunel Building raised £3,500 for the hospital’s £2 million Prostate Cancer Care Appeal.

Now the club wants to boost that amount through the auction, which takes place in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall on Friday, May 4.

The evening will include a sausage and mash supper and the £12.50 tickets can be bought at Country Property in Broad Street.

Club president John Berridge said: “We’re supporting this particular appeal for a number of reasons.

“Men tend not to discuss their health but it is vitally important to get the message across that, in the UK, more than 130 men are diagnosed with this cancer every day.

Prostate cancer it is the most common malignancy diagnosed in men.

“For those who receive the diagnosis, Southmead Hospital is at the forefront of prostate cancer care in the UK and has saved thousands of lives using state of the art robotic surgery equipment. That equipment

Organiser Stuart Hobday said many of the auction lots were donated by local companies and suppliers.

He said: “We have vouchers for wine tasting, golf, use of a spa, luxury meals, a

“There are also more unusual lots such as a tour of Rolls-Royce with lunch, a flying lesson, use of a farmhouse in France and a print donated by cartoonist Gerald Scarfe.”

A guide to pre-owned cars with Richard Cooke

Second hand Style A look at everyday cars on the cusp of becoming modern classics Audi S6 Avant, 2006 - 2011: The school-run Lambo THE red-hot SUV sector has a lot going for it: Practicality, flexibility, space and arguably safety from four wheel drive systems. These cars have been selling like crazy for years, but I do take pause to wonder why. Because all of these attributes can be found in a traditional estate car, but last time I checked there aren’t any SUVs that also come with a V10 Lamborghini engine. The 2006 Audi S6 Avant did though – a 5.2 litre 430bhp beast of a motor in an otherwise sensible

4x4 estate from equally sensible Audi. And all this for £13k on the used market? What’s stopping you?

Firstly hats off to Audi for letting their engineers run amok with the S6, raiding sister company Lamborghini’s garage and shoe-horning that V10 under the bonnet. No one expects the Spanish Inquisition, and no one expects such a conventionallooking estate to have this much explosive power. And what power – always there when you need it at any point, no matter how low the revs. I am told by the owner that it pulls harder well above the legal limit (on a German Autobahn, of course) than it does from a standstill. And I can believe him – this is a heavy car at nearly 2 tons, and it takes some shove to

to make do with a V8 these days – downsizing is here to stay, be in no doubt. And that makes the S6 an odd but brilliantly eccentric car, a rare example of a modern manufacturer going out on a limb and doing something really unusual.

Do note that Audi’s reliability record isn’t as good as they might lead you to believe. Boot seals can leak, and the struts themselves are weak. The S6 also needs to be driven hard; leave it for a week and any number of the multiple ECUs may rebel and throw up error warning lights. The engine has a habit of clogging itself up with carbon deposits if you don’t thrash it every now and then.

Which, let’s face it, you will. In fact it’s a rather lumpy engine from cold, grumbling like a recalcitrant waiter until warm. If you have to ask about servicing – the cost of tyres or ten spark plugs – this isn’t the car for you. What it is though is a fabulous concoction of German precision and Italian passion. For my money it is also a dead cert guaranteed future classic.

get it moving, but move it does – 0-60mph takes about 5 seconds and 0-100mph no more than 13. That is staggeringly fast for something that can easily swallow a grandfather clock, and the fact that it likes to cruise in triple figures comes as no surprise.

My test model has 88k miles on the clock, and comes in rather lovely limited edition S6 blue. It returns 22mpg in mixed driving and will rock on its suspension if you blip the throttle at traffic lights, just like a muscle car. The rather lazy 5 speed autobox reminds me of a yank tank as well, but you learn to use it gently given the huge reserves of torque. I get the feeling that this is the last of a breed – Audi now fit a V6 in the current S6. Heck, even the RS6 has

Be prepared - cubs put motto into practice The recent snow might have brought much of Yate and Sodbury to a halt, but the 1st Chipping Sodbury cubs are made of sterner stuff.

They enjoyed a weekend camp despite the weather, as Akela Sharon Cross explains.

As I left work on in the heaviest snowstorm we’ve seen for many years, only succeeding in navigating Charfield Hill with the help of three good Samaritans who appeared out of nowhere and pushed my struggling car to the top, I seriously doubted the wisdom of having arranged for that coming weekend - a camp in Bristol Docks for our Cubs.

Whilst the roads to Bristol were pretty much impassable on Friday, I decided that it would be fun to camp regardless at our Chipping Sodbury headquarters. I contacted the parents of our Cubs and shared with them our revised plan. So delighted were they at the prospect of having a weekend without their 8-10 year olds, that their resourcefulness took over and fourteen Cubs made their way to us by 4x4, on foot, by sled and even by tractor! Adding toboggans to their Kit list.

After dinner we headed out to play in the snow on The Ridings and found to our delight,

Cubs assembled in the snow on the edges of the rugby and football pitches, snowdrifts as tall as a Cub. The snow was so deep that the Leaders got stuck several times and had to resort to crawling on all fours to reach the summits of the slopes. Once back at HQ, to dry out and warm up with the compulsory hot chocolate, the Cubs settled down to watch a film.

On Saturday morning we ventured to the alpine slopes of Wickwar where the Cubs demonstrated the skills of the gold medallists at the winter Olympics, as they hurtled downwards.

By late afternoon the rapid thaw had completely changed the road conditions, so we headed to Bristol by minibus and followed the Treasure Island Trail

around Bristol’s old pirate haunts.

On Sunday we returned to take our planned boat trip around Bristol’s floating harbour. The Cubs really enjoyed what proved to be an extremely interesting and informative tour from the

main harbour lock gates under the Suspension Bridge, past Temple Meads station to The Feeder. We always like, if possible, to invest our new Cubs into the pack in a place that will be memorable for them. One lucky Cub and our newest leader ‘Grey’ became the first, according to the guide, ever to be invested aboard the Matthew, which was moored in the Docks and they were asked to sign the visitors book.

The easy thing to do on Friday morning would have been to use the snow as a reason to cancel the camp however, as most would know, the Cub motto is “Be Prepared”. Our Cubs, their parents and our leaders were all prepared to carry on camping – despite the arctic conditions and everyone had a great and very memorable time.

Date at the palace JUAN Nuevo, the Lions Club Zone Chair past president of Chipping Sodbury Lions Club, was invited to a reception at Buckingham Palace for a reception to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lions Clubs International.

Blood pressure checks on offer at Rotary event HEALTH professionals will measure people’s blood pressure at an annual event run by Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club.

The club has organised blood pressure checks for many years at an all-day drop-in session in order to highlight the importance of the procedure.

Organiser and retired GP Tony Sarafian said: “High blood pressure is a significant contributing factor to strokes.

“Anyone tested can have peace of mind within a few minutes. Events such as this are extremely important in raising public awareness and, should anyone require further advice, we can direct them to their GP”.

He said the simple test would only take a few minutes, was painless and undertaken by qualified health professionals.

Figures show that someone in the UK suffers a stroke every three-and-ahalf minutes.

It is also estimated that 5.5 million people in the country have undiagnosed high blood pressure, something Rotary clubs are trying to reduce.

The testing will be carried out from 9.30am-3.30pm on Saturday, April 21, at 61 Broad Street, next to the town hall.

The event is mainly aimed at those people who have not had their blood pressure tested in the past five years, if at all.

Lungworm Despite the recent weather, it is officially spring time. Spring also means peak activity time for slugs and snails. While we may be concerned about the threat these gastropods pose to our garden flowers, they also pose a very serious risk to our pet dogs.

As our dogs are enjoying the great outdoors, they can pick up parasites such as lungworm.

Lungworm is a parasitic worm which affects dogs and foxes.

Once your pet becomes infected, adult lungworms live in their heart and the major blood vessels supplying the lungs, causing a variety of serious health problems.

Lungworm is known as the ‘silent killer’ as symptoms can go unnoticed for months, even years, before death. Symptoms include changes in behaviour, weight loss,

breathing difficulties, coughing, vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain. All ages and breeds are susceptible to lungworm infection; however, dogs that are known to eat slugs and snails are considered higher risk.

Unfortunately, lungworm is gradually becoming more common. Recent studies have shown that lungworm is now found throughout most of the UK. However, lungworm infections can be prevented with monthly treatments as recommended by your veterinary surgeon.

If your dog displays symptoms of lungworm infection, please seek medical advice.

Snails aren’t good for plants - or dogs

Drop-in session to recruit foster carers YATE will host one of a series of information sessions aimed at finding more people interested in fostering children and teenagers in South Gloucestershire.

Foster carers will be at the five events to explain their role and how they make a difference to youngsters.

Anyone over the age of 21 can be considered as a foster carer, provided they have a spare bedroom, can provide

a safe and stable home, have the time to care for a child or young person and can work as part of a team.

There are also different types of fostering, from short-term placements to long-term fostering and emergency care.

The Yate event takes place at the council offices in Badminton Road on Saturday, April 7, from 10.30am-12.30pm.

TIME was of the essence at Stroud Auction Rooms' March sale when Stuart Maule's specialist watch section swept the board.

Fifteen of the 25 highest selling lots were in this category, with top place scooped by a Rolex OysterPerpetual GMT-Master gentleman's wristwatch, which sold for £16,000.

There was a lot of competition for the best timepieces with an Omega Speedmaster Professional chronograph wristwatch making £7,000; a Lemania British Royal Navy nuclear submarine chronograph wristwatch (£6,300) and a Blancpain Villeret 18ct gold triple calendar automatic with moonphase (£4,000).

Jewellery held its own with a platinum art deco ring set with a round brilliant diamond and two baguette cut diamonds going under the hammer for £4,400. Other exceptional pieces included a Belle Epoque diamond set necklace/brooch in foliate and floral design (£3,350) and a pair of Victorian earrings set with natural, untreated cut rubies surrounded by old cut diamonds (£1,800).

An early 19thC gold snuff box with blue enamel decoration attracted great attention, eventually selling for £2,750, while an Oliver Cromwell 1658 Commonwealth shilling in near very fine condition, sold for £1,400.

But the success was not all about the high fliers. Auctioneer Nick Bowkett was particularly

Junction 18A onto the M4: Another step forward

JUNCTION 18A, the proposed new link between vital and A4174 ring road, with the M4, has taken another step forward this month, as South Gloucestershire Council took the formal decision to recommend that the new junction should be placed at Emersons Green, not at Pucklechurch, moving the project onto the next stage.

Junction 18A onto the M4 would provide relief to existing and future congestion on the ring road, and discourage heavy goods traffic from using routes through the small, eastern villages in South Gloucestershire, as they make their way from the A46 to access eastern Bristol. A report by the University of Bath has also highlighted the key economic benefits of a new M4 link which will provide easier access residents onto the M4 and accommodate the growth that is planned for South Gloucestershire.

It will also address the increasing commercial demands being placed on Yate, Emersons Green Westerleigh, Pucklechurch and the rest of South Gloucestershire.

I am so grateful to the thousands of local residents who signed the petition calling for the new junction 18A, which helped us as the three South Gloucestershire MPs secure ÂŁ500,000 from the Chancellor to get junction 18A moving again. This level of local support has helped me raise junction 18A in the House of Commons, bring Cabinet Ministers down to the site and to show them how important it will be for the area.

I was also delighted to hand a letter, signed by over 100 local businesses, calling for the junction to the Transport Minister. All of this local support has helped get us to this stage, where we can

look at reliving the long term congestion we experience in South Gloucestershire.

As we move forward, we now have to get Highways England to look over the proposed location and sign it off too, but I have already met with them to explain that as the local MP, I would only be able to support the Emersons Green option, and completely oppose any suggestion of it being built at Pucklechurch.

As both a local man who was born here and has lived here all of my life, I will do all I can to help deliver the best for our community, and this includes pushing for bigger improvements to our roads as well as smaller local schemes. • 2tsps mixed spice- as above • 1tsp ground cinnamon -as above • Good pinch of salt • Unsalted butter- 125g (4oz) • Golden syrup- 4 level tablespoons Preheat the oven to 180 c, fan 170c, gas mark 4 Here’s what you do: 1. First prepare your baking trays.

Line 2 very large trays, or 4 small ones with non-stick baking parchment. I use 18”(46 cm) x16”(41cm)trays which will take 6 biscuits.

2. Place all the dry ingredients in a food mixer or processor and give them a pulse. If you don’t have a processor, don’t worry, just sift all the ingredients together into a large bowl.

3. Rub in the butter until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs.

4. Using a metal tablespoon, dip it in boiling water before measuring. (This makes it easier to work with.) Measure the syrup

into the dry ingredients and work it in thoroughly. You will have a fairly soft dough.

5. Put a little flour on your hands.

Take teaspoons of the dough and lightly roll into balls.

6. Place on your lined baking trays.

Make sure you have left a lot of space around each biscuit, otherwise the mixture will fuse together into a single sheet. As they cook the balls will flatten themselves.

7. Bake in the pre-heated oven on the middle shelf for 5mins or until they begin to go brown.

Then transfer them to the bottom shelf bottom of the oven for a further 5-10 mins or until they are a golden brown all over.

8. At this point they may feel a little soft to the touch. Remove the tray from the oven and leave for 5 mins to firm up. Test one biscuit- they should be crisp and have a good “snap” when broken in half.

9. Transfer to a cooling tray. Store in an airtight tin.

Time for a spring clean

F

ROM Easter eggs to dusters and black plastic bags, spring is often thought of as a time of renewal.

Whilst chomping down our

chocolate eggs how many of us are already considering when to do our ‘spring clean’ of the house, garden shed or ‘man cave’? After all everything looks better and we often feel healthier, especially after consuming all that chocolate, after a good tidy up.

It may be relatively easy to renew things outwardly — new clothes, a hairstyle, a new lick of paint here and there. Renewal on the inside can be more difficult.

Problems from the past can haunt our todays. Broken relationships undermine self-esteem. Guilt over missed opportunities, pain from rejection, loneliness and anger from past hurts can sometimes create a swirling black hole in our lives that can seem almost impossible to escape.

So, where can one find inner

renewal? Some look to friends or family, counsellors and self-help books provide coping skills, but maybe a look at the first Easter could also offer some clues.

A little over 2,000 years ago, a young Jewish leader fell out of favour with the established authorities. He was publicly executed, declared dead, wrapped up like a mummy and placed in a tomb. A large stone was rolled against the entrance and an elite unit of Roman soldiers guarded the tomb against grave robbers.

Two days later, the stone was rolled away and the tomb was found to be empty, but the grave clothes were still in place. The man’s closest followers, most of whom had abandoned him during his trials, reported seeing him alive again. Many later died horrible

deaths for telling people that their leader had risen from the dead.

They had been transformed from the inside and it affected every aspect of their lives, giving them inner strength, freedom from guilt, love for their enemies and boldness to stand for what they believed was right. “If anyone is in Christ,” wrote one early believer, “he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

Sometimes life’s challenges can seem insurmountable. Yet that first Easter still offers hope. Maybe if Jesus really did come back from the dead, then people today can find inner renewal by knowing him personally.

As we eat our Easter eggs and undertake our spring cleans this month, might that be a message worth pondering?

n LITERARY FESTIVAL Yate & Sodbury Voice is pleased to be the media partner of the Cotswold Edge Literary festival. We will be bringing you the latest news ahead of the week long event from June 16 24. This month we highlight some of the big, and not so big, names that will be in South Gloucestershire for the event.

Susan Lewis Best selling author SUSAN Lewis lives in South Gloucestershire and is a prolific - and best selling - author. She might have been born in Bristol and is enjoying life back in the area now, but in-between life was a roller coaster ride played out in the south of France and California. She’s the author of almost 50 books, including two memoirs.

My father was a Welsh miner, a poet, an engineer and a

thinker. My mother was one of 13 children who, at 20, persuaded my father to spend his bonus on an engagement ring instead of a motorbike. We were a normal, happy, nuclear family, living in a spanking new council house on the outskirts of town – my mother’s pride and joy.

I was 9 and my brother 5 when my mother died of cancer.

She was 33, my father was 37, and he never married again.

Sathnam Sanghera Author of ‘The Boy With The Top Knot’ and Times journalist SATHNAM Sanghera is perhaps best known for his best selling novel, The Boy With The Top Knot, an account of growing up as the son of Punjabi parents in Wolverhampton. It was recently made into a BBC film. Sathnam has also written the critically acclaimed Marriage Material, and you can find his writing more regularly in The Times newspaper.

I went to the boarding school, a rogue little pupil in amongst all the posh girls, with their plummy voices, rich parents and exotic tales of faraway places. I yearned for my mother and father, but it was for the best, I was told. I took it upon myself to get expelled. It took a while, and I had rather a fabulous time achieving it When I was 18 I got a job at HTV in Bristol, and at 22 I moved to London to work for Thames.

I began as a secretary in news and current affairs, then trained as a production assistant and moved on to light entertainment and drama. It was a love of drama, combined with a fierce ambition, that got me knocking on the Controller’s door to ask what steps to take to become a producer. “Oh, go away and write something,” came the reply. So I did.

2008 Costa Biography Award, the 2009 PEN/Ackerley Prize and named 2009 Mind Book of the Year. Sathnam’s first novel, Marriage Material was been picked by Waterstones as one of the fiction debuts of 2013.

Before becoming a writer Sathnam (among other things) worked at a burger chain, a hospital laundry, a market research firm, a sewing factory and a literacy project in New York.

Between 1998 and 2006 he was at The Financial Times, where he worked (variously) as a news reporter in the UK and the US, specialised in writing about the media industries, worked across the paper as Chief Feature Writer, and wrote a weekly column.

Sathnam joined The Times as a columnist and feature writer in 2007 and also reviews cars for Management Today magazine.

WILL Self has had a long, distinguished and sometimes controversial career. His output is prolific, not only in novels and short stories, but also in magazine and newspaper writing. He’s also a regular broadcaster on radio and television. We are delighted to welcome him to our first literary festival.

An evening of books and beverages with Tristan Darby.

Our evening is hosted by a man who knows both subjects inside out. Tristan Darby is the owner of the Bristol Wine School, but he’s also an actor who also the drinks columnists for local magazines. Enjoy an evening of readings from famous texts, paired with tasting the drinks described in the book.

Tristan Darby has experience spanning over 20 years in the catering, hospitality and wine trade - interspersed with time touring as a professional actor and singer.

Tristan is drinks columnist for The Bath Magazine and The Bristol Magazine, and is a judge for both the Bristol and Bath Good Food Awards.

He no longer acts but promises to incorporate as much theatre as he can into the evening of tasting. However, he still sings, and can occasionally be found gigging with his jazz and blues quartet.

Tristan has earned a great reputation for educational but unstuffy wine courses and wine tastings he delivers, so expect to feel welcome, have fun, meet new people and learn something new in relaxed and friendly surroundings.

Her short fiction has been listed in competitions and published in several anthologies.

In 2017 she won the Evesham Festival of Words Adult Short Story Competition with The Bird of Wax which forms part of In the Blink of an Eye.

Mandolin musicians set to entertain return concert BRITAIN’S first modern mandolin quartet is set to return to Chipping Sodbury, 17 years since first playing in the town.

Comedian’s opening arts festival show a sell-out THE opening night of this year’s Thornbury Arts Festival is already a sell-out, with all tickets for comedian Jeremy Hardy snapped up and a waiting list launched.

Events featuring Baroness Shirley Williams, who has just retired from the House of Lords after 50 years in politics, and TV wildlife presenter Simon King are also proving popular.

Despite box office venues at the town hall and library yet to open from early April, festival-goers have been able to go online, as well as apply by post, for tickets since the start of February.

It has allowed organisers to meet the expected early high demand for a number of events in the festival, which starts on Friday, April 20, and continues for nine days.

It features a range of entertainment from music and drama to cinema and lunchtime talks, with a show by The Swinging Rascals - described as a 21st century Rat Pack act with an 11-piece live band - set to bring the event to a foot-tapping close.

Two of Thornbury’s own stars will be made especially welcome when TV food show producer Andy Clarke and Paralympian Kate Grey return to the town.

Andy has worked on high profile programmes such as Blue Peter and Saturday Kitchen for BBC1, James Martin’s French Adventure and James Martin’s American Adventure for ITV, as well as Richard and Judy on Channel 4.

Kate became a Paralympic swimmer who represeted GB for ten years and took part in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. She

Jason Petchey had the time to resurrect his carrying game along with Dave Guest, both contributing to the move that ended in a try for Niall Kincaid.

As the half drew to a close Sodbury launched an attack from deep in their own half. Matt Cook broke free after some sweet passing had put him in space. He galloped free before giving the ball to pace man Ben Pullen, who was eventually hauled down on the on the Old Boys’ 22. The ruck was completed in the blink of an eye and the

residence at the 2017 Cardiff Guitar Festival.

From the restart, Guest then launched a long, flat, probing pass which found Edgar on a charge from full-back. His speed carried him past three defenders for his first try.

The next score was Horton’s second, with Edgar also bagging his second try from another long pass as he hugged the touchline.

From the restart Cook was on hand to finish a pacey probing move with his second try. Just five minutes later, from a lineout on Old Boys’ 22, Bradley struck. He weaved his way majestically through a packed defence for what was a trademark solo try.

Only three of the eleven tries scored were by forwards. The last one was touched down on the right wing by Luke B-S. This was a comprehensive victory which owed much to Sodbury’s patience, though it

Yate AC Athletes win Championship medals ATHLETES at Yate & District Athletic Club are celebrating success at regional and national indoor championships.

The clubs Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 athletes were the first with an indoor championships medal haul, amassing a total of nine medals at The South West Indoor Championships. Maddox Davies won Bronze in both the 60m and Shot Put and 10-yearold Phoebe Havard took Gold in the 60m.

The Under 20’s and senior athletes added a further five medals to the tally. Adam Wilson (Senior Men 800m) and Lucy Durham (U20 Women Triple Jump) both achieved silver medals, whilst Yvette Westwood (Senior Women 60m) and Kane Lee (Senior Men 400m) went one better and bought home gold medals. Kane Lee also managed a further silver medal at the Welsh Senior Championships.

In the Midland Championships, Luke Ball, the talented multieventer, won a double silver in the individual long jump and high jump. He also recently travelled to Sheffield to compete in the National Pentathlon Championships, which incorporated the Midland Championships. Still in his first year, Luke managed to perform a personal best in all five disciplines and finish fifth over all nationally and third within the Midlands.

Yvette Westwood had to settle for bronze in the Midland Championships Senior Womens 60m, pipped to the silver by

just 0.05 seconds. Yvette also made an appearance on the nationally televised, British Indoor Championships, but unfortunately couldn’t make it past her incredibly strong 60m and 200m heats Proving that age is no barrier to success, Karen Jones went to the this years British Masters Championships hoping to defend the two titles she won last year, competing in the V55 age group hammer throw and weight throw. Karen had to make a last minute decision as to whether she was actually fit enough to compete. Fortunately, she decided to go ahead, and much to her surprise she managed to launch her 3kg hammer 34.84m. Amazingly, this distance was just a little more than 2m down on her lifetime best but she was pipped to the gold medal by 4cm.

Travelling to Shortwood United for a local derby, a venue where they have struggled for points in recent seasons, Yate found that the pitch was not conducive to free flowing football. Chances were at a premium during a scrappy first half. Yate had an early goal disallowed before the home side took the lead five minutes before the interval with virtually their first attack. Nick Peare sent in a 25 yard shot that rattled the Shortwood bar, and then had a header cleared off the line. Adam Price, like Peare playing against one of his former clubs, then clipped the bar before Steve Davies had a shot well saved.

Yate persistence finally paid dividends when in the fourth minute of added time Ben Brooks netted with a fine half volley from 10 yards, with what was effectively the last kick of the match.

Fourth placed Didcot Town’s visit to Lodge Road produced an exciting match with Yate’s first half performance one of their best of the season. The home side carved open the visitors defence with crisp incisive football creating several chances before finally taking the lead after half an hour. An intricate passing movement found Adam Price in space, and he curled a delightful shot into the net.

The home side deservedly doubled their advantage just before the interval when Ross Langworthy’s mazy run ended with him being brought down, and Steve Davies converting the resultant penalty.

Didcot came out for the second half with a completely different approach. After just eight minutes they reduced the arrears when Felipe Barcelos was fouled on the edge of the box, and George Jeacock fired home from the spot. Four minutes later the visitors were on level terms when Callum McNish drove into the far corner. The end to end excitement continued until the final minute when Davies’ header hit the bar and rebounded to safety.

After the ravages of the weather Yate resumed playing two weeks later against Cirencester Town. The torrential rain caused the majority of matches in the division to be postponed, but terrific work

interval with a strike by leading scorer Ben Whitehead.

Yate deservedly equalised on 65 minutes with a deft near post flick by Steve Davies following Langworthy’s cross, and Langworthy twice hit the woodwork. The visitors regained their lead ten minutes from time through Will Christopher’s deflected effort, and the points appeared destined for North Gloucestershire. In the fifth minute of added on time, Yate’s endeavours deservedly gained reward when substitute Matty Tanner ghosted behind the Cirencester defence and volleyed high into the net to salvage a 2-2 draw and a point.

Yate then entertained Larkhall Athletic and extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a 3-1 victory.

In contrast to the previous matches Town opened slowly and Larkhall took the lead after 10 minutes when Joe Tumelty scored from close range. It took Yate some time to build momentum but they then scored two goals in as many minutes; after 33 minutes Steve Davies found space at the far post to score from a narrow angle, and

then Ross Langworthy sent a superb volley into the top corner to give Yate the lead at half time.

The visitors started the second half brightly but Town weathered the storm and gradually gained the upper hand.

Once again Yate had to wait until injury time to score and put the result beyond any doubt, when a quick break from defence created a two on one situation and Nick Peare slotted the ball home from an acute angle to ensure a 3-1 win.

Twirlers start year in fine form

YATE Star Twirlers enjoyed a successful start to the 2018 season bringing home three first places at the National Association of Majorettes England competition.

The troupe won all three categories they entered, including Traditional Military, Exhibition and Pom, all in the Junior age category. The 10 girls aged 11-18 are training hard to add further routines ready for the next competition in April and hoping to once again qualify to represent England at the European Majorette Championships later in the year.

The troupe, which has now been running for 8 years, is entirely funded by donations. They are always looking for new members, any boys or girls who are interested in joining should email for more details: michelle@yatestartwirlers.co.uk
