Bumper Christmas for Yate as Riverside shops open WITH the first businesses opening at the £25 million Riverside development in Yate, bosses at the town’s shopping centre are looking forward to a bumper Christmas.

Shops and restaurants are opening rapidly at the extension to the main precinct, which occupies the former overflow car park off Link Road.

Managers were delighted with the interest shown in the scheme by big name businesses.

But they have also reported enthusiasm for units in the original Yate Shopping Centre, where vacancy levels are well down on national figures.

Many of the Riverside units will be open before Christmas but the anchor of the scheme – a six-screen Cineworld cinema, is not due to start operating until Spring.

Thousands of visitors expected at popular crib festival MORE than 150 cribs will be on display in St John’s Church, Chipping Sodbury, for one of the town’s most popular events of the year.

Many of those exhibited for the annual Nativity Crib Festival have been loaned to the church from overseas. Others have been made by local schools and toddler groups.

Last year about 5,000 people went to see the displays of traditional and contemporary cribs.

Organiser Liz Gregson said: “Each year we welcome new cribs and some we have seen before.

“We also have lots of other things to offer, including craft items for children to make, stories to listen to and workshops to join. It is a truly magical and exciting festival for friends and family to visit.”

The festival runs from December 2-6, with the church café open for the duration of the event. More details can be found by visiting the www.svbcofe.org.uk website.

Restaurant re-opens with future of neighbouring pub revealed THE Tudor Raj Indian restaurant and takeaway in Rounceval Street, Chipping Sodbury, has re-opened after a change in ownership.

The future of the adjacent Grapes pub, the oldest hostelry in the town has been also resolved.

The Grapes has closed and reopened on a number of occasions during the last decade, but will now become the Grapes Bar and will be an integral part of the Raj restaurant.

Caution from campaigners over hospital plan for Frenchay J LunchTIME TREAT I

CAMPAIGNERS have given a cautious welcome to an apparent change of heart over a community hospital at Frenchay.

Fears that the promised hospital would never be built have been growing since South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said in 2013 that it wanted to see a “health and social care centre” - in effect a 68-bed nursing home – on the site of the former acute hospital.

But now the CCG has revealed proposals for a 74-bed community hospital at both Frenchay and at Thornbury Hospital. Each will have 44 rehabilitation beds and 30 nursing beds.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said in a statement: “The announcement of a new hospital on the Frenchay site demonstrates our commitment to the NHS locally.”

The CCG will now prepare its business case for the development of the hospitals, with plans expected to be completed in March.

Barbara Harris, spokeswoman for the Save Frenchay Community Hospital Group, said the announcement of commissioning intentions was welcome after a five-year wait but until more details were available, she remained wary.

She said: “There are no details of the levels of service provision for these units, nor of staffing levels. The public need to know exactly what is being proposed and what services there will be in support of those beds.”

The group wants to know whether Frenchay will be a community hospital or one with just nursing home beds, what diagnostic tests will be available and whether a geriatrician will be in attendance.

Mrs Harris said: “What is clear, however, is these proposals fall far short of the twice formally approved community hospital, with outpatients and diagnostic clinics, which would have saved residents from having to access Southmead Hospital.”

She said the group would be “watching like hawks” to ensure the new provision met the legal requirement to improve on current services.

Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall welcomed the CCG announcement.

He said: “The desire for new and redeveloped facilities at both Thornbury and Frenchay has been very clear when speaking to local people about health care in our area.”

YATE Shopping Centre is set for a booming Christmas as many of the new Riverside shops and restaurants continue to open.

It will be the first festive trading period to feature businesses at the complex – a £25 million expansion of the 50-year-old centre.

Demand to take space in the new units was strong and confidence is high that customers will support the traders as it experiences one of the busiest times of the retail year.

Meanwhile, there is also interest in vacant units in the original shopping centre site. That could see occupancy rise to a post-recession high, with vacancy levels of seven per cent falling to half the national average.

Riverside is on the former overflow car park, off Link Road, and when fully open will have as its anchor a long-awaited cinema.

The Cineworld six-screen cinema is due to show its first films in May, 2016, and has been credited with helping to bring in other businesses due to more people being attracted to the area, especially in the evening.

Andrew Lowrey, the shopping centre manager, said Riverside was a major step in the evolution of the precinct as it consolidated its position in South Gloucestershire’s retail hierarchy and helped prepare it for future housing growth in Yate.

He said: “The cinema and restaurants bring a new dimension to the centre. It has always been the owner’s and Yate Town Council’s aim to develop a sustainable night-time economy and, with these new units, the town is well prepared for the future arrival of nearly 3,000 more homes.”

The first shop to open at Riverside was Pets at Home, which welcomed its first customers three weeks ago. Italian restaurant chain Prezzo was opening as Yate and Sodbury Voice went to press, the first of six restaurants on the site.

Further openings include Frankie & Benny’s on December 1, the Next fashion store on December 10 and Nando’s on December 16.

Next year will see the arrival of Dean’s Diner on April 25.

Mr Lowrey said: “We have also just seen Starbucks open in the former Burton’s unit, which had been vacant for more than three years, a temporary Christmas shop open in the former Entertainer unit and have entered into legal negotiations with two potential operators for units in North Walk.

“There is no doubt that the cinema, restaurants and retail units have acted as a magnet in attracting other interests.”

Opponents of Yate housing plan win campaign to save open space A CONTROVERSIAL scheme for new housing on a site in Yate has been turned down.

Woodstock Homes wanted to put 16 houses and two flats on land off Cambrian Drive but 116 local residents joined Yate Town Council in opposing the development.

Under the proposal, a bungalow in Cambrian Drive would have had to be demolished in order to gain access to the landlocked piece of ground.

The town council said the area was well used open space and it was “essential” to keep it as such.

It also said the housing would affect people living either side of the proposed access, extra traffic would be generated and existing onstreet parking lost if the scheme went ahead.

Opponents also questioned the number of homes proposed and said there was already enough new building taking place in and around the town.

South Gloucestershire planners, in rejecting the application, said the proposed development “would result in significant and demonstrable harm and fails to reach the highest possible standards of site planning and design”.

AN out-of-school and holiday club in Chipping Sodbury has improved to secure an assessment of good from an Ofsted inspector.

The Den is based at St John’s Mead primary school and in term time is open as a breakfast club for nearly two hours in the morning and as an after-school club for nearly three hours in the afternoon.

In June it was graded as inadequate by the education watchdog as concerns were raised about children’s safety due to insufficient staff supervising them in a busy playground.

It said gates did not lock and the playground was open to adults other than those employed at the club.

But when inspector Anita McKelvey visited for a re-inspection nearly five months later, she found it had improved enough to be rated as good.

She said: “Managers have made significant improvements for safeguarding since the last inspection.

“All staff have attended training and know what to do in the event of concerns about children’s welfare. Staff know how to keep children very safe.”

She also praised good communication with the children and said staff were good role models.

She said: “Children are happy and enjoy their time at the club.

Children form good relationships with staff.”

The Den, run by the Den Partnership, also operates as a holiday club during school breaks.

MORE housing could be allocated for Yate and Chipping Sodbury as council leaders are told that thousands of extra homes are still needed to meet demand.

Coalpit Heath, Frampton Cotterell and Winterbourne could also have to provide land for development.

Two major planning consultations are currently under way involving identifying sites for housing, despite a number of areas in the district already accommodating new building.

One, to find space for 1,500 homes, covers South Gloucestershire only while the other is for the West of England – the former Avon area – where 85,000 homes are predicted to be needed by 2036. That’s 29,000 more than already planned by the four councils making up the area. South Gloucestershire Council said: “Following the outcome of a recent planning appeal and review of our housing supply, there is currently a shortfall of 1,500 dwellings which need to be built over the next five years.

“To ensure development remains plan-led, we now need to identify additional housing sites and consult further on these before submitting the final proposals to a planning inspector.”

Liberal Democrat councillor for Westerleigh, Claire Young, said the council had been warned that until it identified extra land for homes, developers were likely to get planning permission for land intended to be protected, including in the green belt.

The way housing could be provided is being considered, ranging from the expansion of towns such as Yate to adding small numbers to villages. Other improvements would also be needed, including to roads, transport and other services, in areas taking more development.

Yate is one area already seeing large scale building, with thousands of houses planned for the northern part of the town.

New Ofsted report shows Yate academy still has unresolved problems YATE International Academy still has to improve, with weaknesses highlighted by Ofsted inspectors two years ago yet to be resolved.

A team from the education watchdog returned for another inspection and reported that all key areas, except one, had to get much better.

Only early years provision for the youngest children in the academy’s nursery and reception class could be rated as good.

The outcome is another setback for the school and the Ridings Federation of Academies, which runs the Yate (YIA) site.

Its chief executive principal, Beverley Martin, recently left and Yate’s sister academy in Winterbourne was told by Ofsted that it too had to improve.

The Winterbourne campus was also hit by strikes by teachers due to what they said was a breakdown in relations with the academy leadership.

Last month the chairman of the federation’s trustees, “Laz” Lazarides, asked for the continued support of parents to help get through “turbulent” times.

He hinted that the YIA inspection was likely to reveal problems. Now the document has been published but the academy said those problems identified were being addressed, with an action plan set to guide improvement.

A statement on the school website said: “It has been reassuring to see that inspectors felt the leadership team were already tackling specific areas of weakness.

“However, it is now important this is reflected in standards being raised, something we have already started to see.”

Meanwhile, Melanie Warnes, chief executive principal of the trust which runs the Castle School in Thornbury, has been appointed as a shortterm consultant to help get the academies back on track while the process of recruiting a replacement for Ms Martin continues.

The report said academy leaders knew what had to be done to improve and there were signs of that happening already, including in the punctuality of pupils and the smartness of their uniforms.

Staying safe at Christmas

I

T’S always worth reminding ourselves about the hazards that may present to our pets during the festive period 1. Chocolate - Chocolate can be toxic to dogs, in very small quantities in the case of dark chocolate. It can cause hyperexciteability, trembling, seizures and death. Just 1g per 1kg of body weight of dark chocolate can require veterinary treatment.

2. Grapes and raisins - The exact mechanism of their toxicity is unknown, some dogs exhibit no side effects but others can develop kidney failure after just a few, so it is just best to avoid the risk by not feeding these items to your dog at all. This includes mince pies, Christmas cake and Christmas pudding! Cats may also be susceptible.

3. Antifreeze – This liquid can be accidentally spilt whilst topping up vehicles over winter.

Animals may lick it off of their paws whilst grooming, others may lick it directly off the ground – ethylene glycol is sweet tasting.

If treatment isn’t sought quickly then the animal may show neurological signs and progress into kidney failure. Monitor your vehicles for any suspicious leaks too.

4. Plants - Poinsettia, holly and mistletoe can all cause severe drooling and vomiting.

Lilies are particularly toxic to cats, any part of the plant or flower if ingested can cause kidney failure. This may be as simple as your cat brushing past the flower and grooming the pollen out of their coat or drinking the water from the vase. Check

any bunches of flowers for lilies and remove them.

5. Leftovers - Raw as well as cooked bones can cause constipation or serious obstructions. These ‘foreign bodies’ may require surgery to extract them. Be aware that a sudden change in diet, especially if it features things like meat scraps and fatty foods can cause gastrointestinal problems (vomiting/diarrhoea) or pancreatitis – not what you want for your pet over the holiday season!

6. Baubles, wrapping paper and tinsel - If eaten these items could cause an obstruction, making your pet very poorly, and possibly requiring surgery to correct. Clean up used wrapping paper promptly, supervise your pets near decorations and don’t leave loose batteries or small toys lying around.

Other tips include making sure your Christmas tree is securely anchored to prevent your pet accidentally pulling it over. Cover up electrical wires on fairy lights and decorations to prevent chewing and clean up any dropped pine needles to stop them getting stuck in pet’s paws or mouth. Also be aware that some pets may get scared by crackers, loud music, flashing fairy lights and lots of visitors.

Gertrude, the choice of pupils at St Paul’s Catholic Primary School in Yate, and Rocky, named by youngsters at The Manor Primary School, Coalpit Heath, have already been out spreading salt on road surfaces.

About 30 per cent of roads in the district are gritted when ice has been predicted and this winter the treatment is being extended to cycle and shared-use paths from mid-December to make it safer for those who cycle to work.

South Gloucestershire Council has invested in new machinery that allows gritting teams to reach a number of the paths, although some will remain inaccessible.

When required, staff treat main A and B-roads and routes to schools, care providers, fire, ambulance and police stations.

Gritter drivers are on call around the clock during the winter, with a network of roadside sensors used to monitor conditions throughout the district.

The council said about 14,000 miles of road were salted every year, with each gritting run covering up to 300 miles of the district’s roads.

This year it had 5,000 tonnes of salt to see it through the cold weather.

Twinning group preparing for latest trip to friends in Germany A VISIT is being organised to Yate’s twin German town of 30 years.

Yate and District Twinning Association is planning the trip, with a coach party leaving Yate on May 31, 2016, and returning on June 8.

German families will host many of the visitors in Bad Salzdetfurth but hotel rooms will also be available.

The link between the towns was formally agreed in 1985 and since then a number of exchange visits have taken place, with many friendships now established.

Vintage jazz music to revive the Roaring Twenties in Chipping Sodbury concert FOOT tapping vintage music is promised at an evening of Roaring Twenties jazz when Debbie Arthurs and her Sweet Rhythm Band visit Chipping Sodbury.

Housing society vows to build more affordable homes to tackle the housing crisis HOUSING association Merlin has pledged to build more affordable homes in South Gloucestershire to help meet an increasing demand.

With a new report showing the average South Gloucestershire home now costs more than £230,000 to buy and more than £9,000 a year to rent, living in the area is becoming increasingly unaffordable for many people.

Chipping Sodbury-based Merlin said it owned about 8,000 of the 12,000 housing association properties for rent in the district and vowed to press ahead with plans to build even more. Currently it is building more than 70 homes, including 22 in Chipping Sodbury and 39 in Coalpit Heath.

The Coalpit Heath scheme to replace houses built of pre-case reinforced concrete forms phase one of a project to redevelop up to 450 non-traditional homes across the area.

Amanda Swann, Merlin’s head of development, said: “House prices are rising because demand for housing is exceeding supply but we’re determined to do our part and increase the numbers of new homes being built in South Gloucestershire.

“We’re already exploring other sites in the area to provide some more much-needed affordable housing.”

A report by the National Housing Federation said would-be homeowners in South Gloucestershire needed to see their salary double to be able to afford the average home in the area.

The document said the average price of a house in the district was nearly nine times the local average salary of £26,400 – up by eight per cent since last year. Average annual rent represented 34 per cent of that wage.

The federation said across England last year, housing associations built 50,000 new homes, accounting for 40 per cent of all new homes in the country.

Meanwhile South Gloucestershire Council will consult on plans to force developers who claim they cannot afford to include a proportion of affordable homes on their sites to publish evidence backing it up.

A target of 35 per cent of affordable homes can be relaxed if builders feel it would make a scheme unviable but the council said the facts surrounding such claims had to be produced.

Free activities at Yate Leisure Centre boosts town’s dementia-friendly status SINGING, swimming and socialising sessions are being run at Yate Leisure Centre for people with dementia and their carers.

The activities have been introduced as part of wider efforts to make the town dementia friendly.

Yate Dementia Action Alliance wanted to improve the health and well-being of people with the condition so teamed up with the leisure complex to organise the free events.

They are currently running from 10am-noon every Monday until December 14 and after a break over Christmas, are due to resume in early January.

Leisure centre football coach Mike Jones is leading the project with his wife, Jan, who used

to run Singing for the Brain sessions. Mike is also a Dementia Friends champion, helping people understand more about the condition.

He said: “We hope our weekly sessions give people with dementia and their carers an opportunity to express themselves in a fun and welcoming environment.

“It is so important that people with dementia maintain a high quality of life by taking part in activities and enjoying a sociable lifestyle.

“We look forward to welcoming people at the sessions and we hope the people of Yate will join us in raising awareness to support the dementia community.”

Last call for grant applications from community action fund COMMUNITY and voluntary schemes that would benefit from an injection of cash have just days left to apply to a fund set up by police and crime commissioner Sue Mountstevens.

The Commissioner’s Community Action Fund was established in May 2013 by Ms Mountstevens when she became the first Avon and Somerset PCC. Grants of up to £5,000 can be given to projects across the Avon and Somerset police force area that tackle issues in local areas that are related to policing priorities and efforts to cut crime.

But the fund is about to close ahead of the May 2016 election for the next PCC so a deadline for applications has been set for Tuesday, December 1. Decisions on how the money will be distributed will be made in the new year.

Among schemes that have already received funding is a support group for young parents in Yate to addresses issues such as domestic abuse, self-harm and isolation.

The South Gloucestershire Disability Equality Network was helped to raise awareness of hate crime against those with disabilities, while the South Gloucestershire Youth Initiative was given a grant to help young people recover from domestic abuse.

Applications for the final round of grants should be made online to the Avon and Somerset Police Community Trust.

Patients with lung disease to get new service to help them stay at home A NEW service is being set up in South Gloucestershire to help people with a serious lung condition stay out of hospital.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fifth biggest killer in the country and the second most common cause of emergency admissions to hospital.

It is a terminal condition which, in advanced stages, may require those with the disease to have oxygen at home to help keep them living independently.

Sirona Health and Care plans to develop a community service that will include assessing and reviewing those who are registered with a South Gloucestershire GP and have been diagnosed with COPD, as well as anyone who has been prescribed oxygen, regardless of diagnosis.

Emma Caleb, Sirona’s head of specialist rehabilitation services, said: “Individuals will be referred to us by their consultant, GP or other professional and, having been assessed, people will be able to stay in touch with the service.

“Initially we are planning a Monday to Friday service, with staff visiting patients at home or in local clinics.

“However, the aim is to be as flexible as possible and as we want to give greater control and choice to people with respiratory problems, we would like them to be involved in how we develop the service.”

Brothers use their loaf to create new beer-inspired bread

A NEW bread range created to complement beer has gone on sale at the Hobbs House bakery in Chipping Sodbury after a successful launch in London.

Siblings Tom and Henry Herbert of Hobbs House – also known for their double act the Fabulous Baker Brothers – ran what they billed as the world’s first beer bakery for six days in Hackney.

They had spent something like 80 hours devising six types of bread that were inspired by a different beer and baked to go with the ales.

They included a spelt and barley pineapple soda bread and a sea salt and lime encrusted cornbread.

Tom said: “Beer and bread share a history dating back as far as 6000 BC.” The bread has also been added to the menu at the town’s Squire Inn.

Businesses get behind call for new M4 junction OVER 100 local businesses have signed a letter calling on the Government to deliver the funding for a new junction 18A into the M4.

Local MP Luke Hall, has presented the letter to Andrew Jones, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport in the House of Commons.

The campaign has has seen a debate in Parliament and the launch of a University of Bath report, putting forward the economic case for the new junction.

Mr Hall said; “This demonstrates that the campaign for Junction 18A has strong support in the business community and adds to the clear and convincing case that this junction should be part of the future infrastructure of South Gloucestershire”.

It’s claimed the proposed Junction 18A would address increasing residential and commercial demands being placed on South Gloucestershire,

Local Mp Luke Hall and Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore present the letter to Andrew Jones at the House of Commons which is already experiencing significant growth. Over the next 10 years, it is anticipated that 7,000 new jobs will be created in the area and this is due to put

a significant strain on the local road network.

The campaign for the new junction, Gateway2Growth, has already made significant

progress since it was launched in March 2015 and has won cross-party support on South Gloucestershire Council.

All aboard for Shop Sodbury campaign A RED Routemaster bus will ferry shoppers into Chipping Sodbury for an event aimed at encouraging more people to use local businesses.

The Shop Local, Shop Sodbury campaign was set up by the town’s chamber of commerce to highlight the number of independent retailers in Chipping Sodbury.

This year’s event takes place on Saturday, December 5, with the bus service operating from a free overflow car park. It will run from 10am-12.30pm and from 1pm-3pm.

Since the launch of the special day, a nationwide scheme called Small Business Saturday has

been established along the same lines as the Chipping Sodbury project.

Last year, around the country, it led to 16.5 million people shopping in independently run

businesses on the day.

Rich McDonough, vicechairman of the chamber, said: “Chipping Sodbury is a great place to visit at all times of the year but especially at Christmas time.

“We have a huge line up of independent retailers and more than 15 eateries, with plenty of free car parking and a friendly welcome.”

The event also coincides with two vintage-themed fairs, a Christmas market in Hatherell’s yard and the crib festival in St John’s Church.

All fired up and raring to go at trust’s new ceramics studio in Yate A POTTERY run by the Bristolbased Brandon Trust has relocated to Yate.

The Fired Up ceramics studio is operated so people with learning difficulties can learn a skill that can help them find work.

It used to be sited in Pucklechurch but the trust - a charity supporting adults and children with learning disabilities and autism - recently moved it to the Beeches industrial estate in Waverley Road, along with its enterprise workshop.

The workshop is also used by people to develop workplace skills by assembling specialist first aid boxes and medical kits for use in kidney transplant operations.

To mark the move, an open day was held at the new premises, with visitors given the chance to tour the building, workshops and pottery shop, where a range of hand-painted ceramic items were on sale.

Demonstrations were also laid on, along with have-a-go tile

painting sessions.

Project co-ordinator Emma Carey said: “It was great to welcome everyone to the studio and show what the team has produced and the services we provide for people.

“We’re looking to get more involved with the local

community, businesses and schools and would love to hear from anyone who might benefit from the various hobby classes, children’s parties and workshops we run here.”

TV favourite Andy Day brings dinosaur fun to arts festival CHILDREN’S TV presenter Andy Day will be one of the stars of Thornbury Arts Festival when the dinosaur adventurer stages three energy-filled shows.

Folk singer-songwriter Seth Lakeman and Dr Phil Hammond – NHS doctor, broadcaster, comedian and campaigner – have also been signed up to appear at the ten-day event.

They form part of a packed programme compiled by the 2016 festival team, to be launched by comedy performer Tim Brooke-Taylor ahead of an on-stage chat about his career with Bristol writer and broadcaster Chris Serle.

Events featuring music, drama and film are in the schedule, as well as a guided walk in Frampton-on-Severn and a talk by BBC health correspondent Dominic Hughes.

Andy Day, best known for his work on the CBeebies channel, has promised dino-rapping fun with plenty of songs and dancing for youngsters at his shows in the Armstrong Hall.

He will appear during the

same second weekend of the festival as the West Country’s Seth Lakeman, who has successfully steered English folk into the mainstream with highenergy performances and a series of best-selling albums.

His audience will also get the chance to hear the home-grown talent of singer-songwriter Emily Teague, who returns to her Thornbury roots as support act.

Meanwhile, Phil Hammond makes a welcome return to the town after last appearing in the award-winning comedy double act Struck Off or Die in the 1990s.

Thornbury Swing Band and Bristol Male Voice Choir are among other performers, while the Bristol-based Ministry of Entertainment will stage one of its most popular theatre productions, Doodlebugs and Bogeymen, taking a light hearted look at the lives of two evacuees in the Second World War. Artistic director, Shirley Sharp, said: “We’ve got a fantastic line-up of events already planned, with something

Praise for South Gloucestershire cycling routes in national survey results

Festive name sought for Chipping Sodbury toy canine competition

CYCLING routes and facilities in South Gloucestershire have been praised in a national survey.

Feedback from the highways and transportation survey led to South Gloucestershire Council getting the best score among local authorities for provision of services for cyclists.

It also had the highest score in a category for walking and cycling, as well as being regarded highly in the road safety, highways maintenance and community transport categories.

Mark King, the council’s head of street care, said: “We are delighted to be recognised in these awards, which reflect our efforts to improve our road and transport networks for all users.

“We have recently completed several major projects, such as improving facilities for cyclists at junction one of the M32 at Hambrook, which benefits commuter cyclists along the A4174 ring road corridor.

“We are also going to undertake more extensive gritting on the cycle path network this year, as we recognise it as being a very important commuter facility.”

THE successful Sodbury Sheepdog Search is being followed up with a competition run by Chipping Sodbury’s tourist information centre.

During the summer, 28 toy sheepdogs were hidden around the town, with local people and visitors challenged to track them down.

Now a Christmas contest is running to find the best festive name for another of the soft canine toys.

Anyone who visits the centre in High Street can enter before the closing date of December 18, including on Victorian Day on December 4, when the office will be open until 8pm.

Campaign in aid of refugee appeal continues to bring in cash FUND raising to support the Syrian refugee appeal run by the British Red Cross is continuing after the recent launch of a campaign by Yate Town Council, supported by Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club.

The club kick-started the campaign with a £3,000 donation, while a coffee and cake morning held at Chipping Sodbury Baptist Church added more than £200.

A bucket collection at a comedy night in St Mary’s Church, Yate, together with private donations, raised a further £319.

Further events are planned for 2016, including a jazz concert featuring Clare Teal at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall on January 28.

View from Yate Heritage Centre Yate and Poole Court In this year replete with historic anniversaries, there is just one more to report, namely 25 years of Yate Town Council at Poole Court.

Although the council was in existence well before 1990, the move into Poole Court marked a “coming of age” for the local authority.

However, the building is more than a smart backdrop for its work as it has been at the heart of Yate’s history since the 1870s.

Victorian home to officers’ mess Kelly’s Directory of 1889 confirms Poole Court was erected in 1879 - it was a sumptuous family home befitting an upper middle class family.

Throughout much of the period 1879 to 1917, the building was inextricably linked to the Hill family, shipping magnates from Bristol.

Charles Gathorne Hill, a local justice of the peace, was one of the Victorian “worthies”

who dominated the social and economic life of Yate in this period, alongside families at Stanshawes Court, Ridge House and Yate House, as well as the holder of the position of rector of Yate.

In 1917, the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) commandeered the building as an officers’ mess as part of the vast industrial complex repairing aeroplanes and aircraft engines. lived, but Poole Court remained an industrial unit, first as offices for aircraft manufacturer George Parnall and then as the property of the Newman family.

The building remained an impressive and imposing structure and was perfect for the offices of Newman Industries, which in its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s was a major international player in the electrical motor industry. But Poole Court declined in later years as the Newman company struggled and lost its way.

A secure future Newman’s finally closed in 1988, with the future of Poole Court in some doubt as the adjacent industrial buildings were razed to the ground. As Yate Town

Council had spent some years seeking a suitable home, it took the bold step of buying the building. Although the sale was for just £1, the refurbishment of Poole Court was an immense project, with no shortage of detractors. However, the premises were re-born, not only as council offices but also as a social and community centre for the town.

Scouts’ colours on parade at Remembrance Day service after flag restoration CHIPPING Sodbury Scouts proudly paraded the group’s colours at the town’s recent Remembrance Day parade after restoring their original flag.

A donation from the Chipping Sodbury Town Lands Charity meant the work could be carried out as part of the organisation’s centenary celebrations last year.

The group, founded in 1914 by Olivia Burges of The Ridge, ensured it had a big turnout for the remembrance event to show its appreciation of the scout movement’s involvement in both world wars.

Group scout leader Nick Cook said the group was active in the wars collecting metal for arms, raising money with the

The Burges family were acquaintances of scout founder Lord Baden-Powell and a year after the Chipping Sodbury scouts were established, a pilot branch of cub scouts was also set up.

Community transport appeal for more help to meet demand for its service

MORE volunteers are needed to help meet the demand for a community transport service based just outside Yate.

Green Community Travel runs a door-to-door ring-and-ride operation for people who cannot use conventional public transport.

It helps them get out and about more easily to keep appointments, go shopping or enjoy a day trip. It also provides transport for some community and charitable groups.

Manager Jenny Bright said: “We are here to provide safe, affordable and accessible travel for people who are unable to access public transport.

“All of our vehicles have tail lifts and side steps to ensure they are user friendly and our minibus drivers have been trained to a nationally recognised standard.”

The scheme has a total of 14 vehicles to use, with three minibuses going out every day on the ring-and-ride trips.

But it said there were still some people who did not know about the service who would benefit from making use of it.

Jenny said: “The people we help are unable to access public transport in the South Gloucestershire area. But all they have to do is contact us and we can help them.”

She said the minibuses were suitable for people with mobility difficulties but were also used in areas where there was a lack of public transport, such as rural villages, and to help anyone who felt isolated through not being able to get out easily.

Volunteers are relied on to run the office, drive the cars and buses and to be part of the management committee. They have to undergo checks before being involved in the scheme but anyone interested should phone 01454 228706 for details.

The service operates through people registering for £20 and then paying a small sum each time they use a bus or car.

HAVE friends who really enjoy Christmas, I mean really enjoy Christmas. They start the countdown in August and it’s not all about going to Church. I love their enthusiasm for the Christmas season and I wonder if you get as excited, and what you especially enjoy.

Here’s a challenge, before you read on, see how many reasons you can find for enjoying Christmas.

I asked my friends what were their favourite things and here are some of the answers.

1. It’s my favourite time of year because I love shopping.

I don’t always spend a lot of money but I walk miles thinking of the person I’m buying for and what they would enjoy. I love thinking of their faces as they

2. I listen to Christmas carols.

You can hear carols being played in the shops, and I find myself humming along to them as I walk around. Life can be hard sometimes, but sitting with a cup of chocolate, listening to Carols on the TV or radio with or without my family around me is something I really enjoy, and singing along cheers me up immensely and gives me hope.

3. I love fairy lights and decorations. On my desk at work I have a tiny cheap Christmas tree which I dig out every year – when work gets pressurised and I see that tree I know a holiday is coming. I really love the lights on trees and houses and sometimes go for a walk or car ride just to see what I can find, especially where they’ve really gone to town. And guess what? I love knowing there’s a present for me under our tree at home.

4. I keep a secret stash of sweets that are ‘Christmassy’, like marzipan covered with chocolate, and hiding them makes them taste even better.

5. I love staying out late shopping among happy faces and I love parties too, being out with friends, and having Christmas meals.

6. We always go to the Crib Festival at St John’s Church in Chipping Sodbury. The Church is lit outside and in, so it feels great when you go from the cold darkness into the warm light of the Church. The Church is full to the brim with nativity sets. Nativity, the reason for the season. I look out for my children’s school nativity and the children – well they go for the craft table. There are so many cribs that mean so much to so many families. The children also love to go to the Crib Services.

My mum takes them, and enjoys them as much as they do.

I’ve saved the best till last.

7. Going to the midnight service. There is such a sense of warmth, security and togetherness as we sing which makes me remember how much I have to be thankful for. It’s good to recognise that we are blessed.

I do hope each and every one of you has a blessed and happy Christmas.

Water company invites requests for grants to help groups with money projects COMMUNITY organisations in South Gloucestershire have been invited to apply for a grant from Wessex Water to help with finance-related schemes.

Applicants such as debt advice agencies, social enterprises, schools, youth clubs and parish councils have until December 31 to submit requests for a Money Matters grant.

Under the scheme, a panel of experts will consider new or existing projects, which could get up to £10,000.

The grants will be given out in January and Wessex Water will also allow up to 25 per cent of extra funding to help the beneficiaries evaluate the project once it is finished.

Recent recipients of awards include the Yate-based South Gloucestershire Citizens Advice Bureau, which will use the grant for projects aimed at helping people better manage their money.

It will work with the local branch of Age UK to give advice to older residents who may struggle with their bills.

Bureau debt advice expert Yvonne Parks said: “There are many isolated elderly people in our area who do not have access to our offices and this funding will enable us to reach them through home visits, outreach sessions and publicity.”

Changes planned for kerbside waste collections as smaller bins set to appear

SMALLER black bins and more recycling could be introduced in South Gloucestershire as plans are drawn up to change the kerbside collection service.

Despite the amount of waste being dealt with in the district falling by 61 per cent in the last 15 years, South Gloucestershire Council said there was still too much being produced.

It also wants to increase the amount of recycling in order to meet European targets.

It said: “In 2000 we collectively recycled and composted seven per cent of our municipal waste. In 2014-15, this had increased to 47.5 per cent.

“However, this is below the European target of 50 per cent by 2020 and, therefore, recycling continues to be an important priority.

“The last few years have seen very challenging times for the whole economy and the council has faced significant cuts. We need to treat waste as a resource to be tapped rather than a problem.

“The proposed changes to the service intend to simplify the kerbside offering to residents. It will encourage re-use and recycling through increasing recycling collections to weekly and reducing the size of the black bin.”

The South Gloucestershire Green party said £3 million would be saved if recyclable items were not put into black bins.

It said: “Waste minimisation is in everyone’s interest and the council is looking at ways to drive waste out of landfill, putting it to better use, without increasing overall cost.”

But Liberal Democrats accused the ruling Conservatives of failing to live up to a pledge to bring back free garden waste collections.

Householders are being urged to have their say on the proposed changes and put forward any other ideas they might have. The consultation runs until February 15, with details on the council’s website.

There will also be roadshows in Yate Shopping Centre on Wednesday, December 9, from 10am-5pm and at Waitrose, Wickwar Road, Chipping Sodbury, on Wednesday, December 16, from 10am6pm.

NEW trustees are needed to oversee the vital work of the Citizens Advice Bureau in South Gloucestershire.

The CAB provides free and confidential advice to people from its main premises in Yate, at other offices around the district and over the phone. It also campaigns to improve policies and practices that affect people’s lives.

Its work is governed by a board of trustees, whose members are responsible for ensuring the service complies with national standards, charity legislation and company law.

The bureau is currently looking to appoint new trustees to strengthen the board and replace members who are planning to move on.

Trustee chairman John Sellers said: “Ideal applicants will be thoughtful people who care about our community and can quickly get the idea that our work has a valuable impact on its social and economic wellbeing.”

Faster internet set to expand to more areas in South Gloucestershire

NFRASTRUCTURE has been one of South Gloucestershire’s biggest and fastest growing problems for a number of years; whether it is healthcare, access to quality broadband or a lack of suitable road network or public transport facilities, we have been stalling for too long.

This month South Gloucestershire Council announced that £1.54 million will be put into into the second phase of the Broadband roll out scheme. The confirmed areas in this phase include Abson, Acton Turville, Falfield, North Road in Yate, Rangeworthy and improvements in both Chipping Sodbury and Thornbury.

Access to the internet shouldn’t be a luxury, it should be a right - absolutely fundamental to life in 21st Century Britain. I will be pushing to Government to meet its commitment to ensure that all UK homes and businesses will have access to “fast broadband” by 2020.

As the local MP for some of South Gloucestershire’s most rural towns and villages, and someone who has grown up in the area, I can fully appreciate what a difference broadband can make to a community. I have continually pressed this issue with Openreach and Government Ministers, and it is important that while I welcome this news, I know that some areas of the constituency have missed out, and so I will continue to raise this issue both in Parliament and in my meetings with BT and other local stakeholders.

Another major announcement last week saw a pledge to provide new facilities at Thornbury and Frenchay Hospitals, including approximately 44 NHS rehabilitation and 30 mix use care beds at both hospital sites. The desire for

these facilities has been very clear - one of the first things I did in Parliament was to have a debate on Healthcare in South Gloucestershire with the Minister. Following this, I raised the issue further in meetings and with local health chiefs.

I also showed the Secretary of State for Health; Jeremy Hunt, around the Henderson Ward in Thornbury Hospital and explained the state of the current facilities personally.

In addition to this is the campaign for a new Junction 18A on the M4, which is in full swing, with both members of the public and businesses signing up to show their support. The junction would address increasing residential and commercial demands being placed on South Gloucestershire, which is already experiencing significant growth. It would tackle congestion and play a major role in connecting local businesses, boosting regional and national trade, and helping to reduce unemployment.

As the local MP, I am grateful for the support of the local communities around South Gloucestershire with all of these campaigns. It is clear that the expected growth across the area over the next 10 years will require local infrastructure to match the growing demand.

These developments show us what can be achieved in our communities when there is the local and political will, working alongside stakeholders. If we want our local infrastructure to match our ambition, we must keep working for further improvements – delivery on the Healthcare announcements, a fully funded junction 18A and broadband to every business and home in South Gloucestershire.

MORE homes and businesses will benefit from the roll-out of fibre broadband in South Gloucestershire.

In the second phase of a project to introduce faster internet speeds to the district, new areas will be covered and some that have already been reached will be expanded to take in more properties.

Locations include Chipping Sodbury, Rangeworthy and Winterbourne. South Gloucestershire Council said: “Our funding, combined with contributions from Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) and BT means we are able to invest £1.54 million in extending the coverage of fibre broadband.”

John Goddard, chairman of the council’s resources sub-committee said: “Thousands of homes and businesses have already benefited from the first phase of the rollout.

“As we move into the second phase, more than 1,800 residential and business properties will be able to benefit from the extended coverage of fibre broadband.”

The council said residents and businesses in North Road, Yate, would be able to order broadband from their internet service provider straight away as the roadside green cabinets had already been installed and were ready for service.

Councillor Marian Lewis, who represents the Ladden Brook ward, said: “I am of course very pleased that Rangeworthy and North Road are set to benefit from the latest round of roll out.

“However I remain very concerned that some of the other villages I represent are going to miss out again.”

She said that included “an important part” of Engine Common and she pledged to press the council for to bring connectivity to those areas.

Let’s take the sting out of Christmas

Ann Murray is from the Cooking4 Cookery School based in Chipping Sodbury. She’s teamed up with Yate and Sodbury Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen. She says: “Welcome to my world of observations, comments on what’s happening and sometimes some halfbaked thoughts. Each month I’ll be giving you a seasonal recipe and some cooking tips to go with it”.

’M fed up with the adverts for a perfect, star-studded, magical Christmas. This isn’t because I’m a Scrooge, quite the opposite. I just think all the hype about Christmas puts undue pressure on all those cooking it.

So, instead I’m going for a relaxed Christmas where friends and family, including the cooks can enjoy time together. To that end I’m getting everyone to help, cooking ahead and buying in quality canapes to go with the fizz.

So, my star recipe is a makeahead Strata that can be made for brunch, lunch or supper. Perfect for over the Festive season when you are likely to have leftover cheese, cold meats etc. Apparently one third of all the food we buy at Christmas ends up in the bin!

Scandalous.

2 great things about this recipe are that you can make the whole thing the day before, and refrigerate until you’re ready to bake it. And it’s a perfect recipe for vegetarians.

Strata - Italian Savoury Bread & Pudding Serves 8 Make in a large casserole dish – preferably terracotta The Bread: Bread about 12 slices(about 3/4inch thick) Any interesting bread can be used: ciabatta, sourdough, olive, wholemeal, etc. whatever you have left in the bread bin.

Bread should ideally be slightly stale, a couple of days old.

The Savoury Custard: Full fat milk or cream or sour cream or crème fraiche or a combinationabout 1 ½ pints or 850 ml 6 whole (large) eggs OR 3 whole eggs and 6 egg yolks Salt, pepper Fresh or dried herbs Freshly grated nutmeg - if cheese is used in filling.

The Filling: Choose any combination of the following: Onions, red or brown, or spring onions : up to 2 , thinly sliced or

chopped, sautéed until soft Garlic: up to 4 cloves, sautéed with onions (or may be roasted) Mushrooms: up to 8 oz or 225g, sliced and sautéed Cheese: up to 12 oz, 325g, grated, may be mixture. I like to use blue cheese, or strong Cheddar for the main dish, then put Haloumi or mozzarella on the top.

Bacon: up to 8 slices, cooked and crumbled Ham or cooked sausage, or cooked poultry: up to 8oz or 225g, chopped.

Here’s what you do: 1. Generously butter the ovenproof casserole, or a 9x13 baking dish.

2. Preheat the oven to 325 F, 170 C, mark 3 3. Slice the bread into thick (about 3/4”) slices. Cut into chunky cubes.

4. Place cubes on a baking sheet, in the preheated oven for 15 mins until lightly browned.

5. Shake the tray half way through to brown the cubes all over.

Allow to cool.

6. Arrange half the bread in the bottom of the baking dish.

7. Sprinkle one half of the filling ingredients of your choice over the bread. Sprinkle each layer with dried or fresh herbs.

8. Arrange the remaining bread over the first half of the filling ingredients, then top with the remaining filling ingredients.

(Note: If you are using cheese,

end the layering with a cheese layer, for attractive presentation.)

9. Whisk the custard ingredients together in a mixing bowl, and pour custard mixture over the bread and filling layers in the baking dish. You should be able to just see the custard peeping through. Allow to stand for at least 30 minutes to allow custard to soak into the bread.

10. Finish with a grating of nutmeg if using cheese, or other ingredients sprinkle with herbs.

11. Bake at 325 F, 170 C or mark 3 for 40 to 50 minutes or until puffed and golden (a knife, inserted near the centre of the casserole should come out clean).

12. Remove from the oven, cover with foil. Allow the finished strata to stand for 10-15 minutes before serving for easy serving.

13. Serve hot, or at room temperature.

Cook’s Tips: Mixture may be baked immediately (after 30 minutes standing), or may be refrigerated for several hours or overnight before baking.

May be reheated in hot oven for 10 mins, 425 F, 220C, mark 7 or microwave on HIGH for about 5mins.

Could you make a difference to the life of a Chernobyl Child?

2016 will mark the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, an event that the population of Belarus can never forget.

Their people are forever affected by the legacy of the world’s worst nuclear disaster – the radioactive fallout was nearly 400 times greater than the bombs dropped in 1945 on Hiroshima & Nagasaki combined. The World Health Organisation has classified 500,000 of the children in Belarus as being “at risk” – or to put it another way – only 6% of the children are healthy!

The Chernobyl Children’s Life Line charity was founded by Victor Mizzi M.B.E. in 1991. Building on his example, we bring a group of 16 children from Belarus each summer for a month’s respite holiday, giving their immune systems a chance to recuperate.

It is estimated that a month staying with a family here, eating uncontaminated, nourishing food, resting from the relentless radiation and breathing clean air can add up to two years to their life expectancy.

Could you share your home with two 11 year old children for two weeks? There is a network of support for host families – you would not be on your own. The children will be encouraged to participate in the activities we will organise on their behalf. These events range from sports to the arts, from local visits to coach trips to the sea or country. There will be two Belarusian teachers (who act as interpreters) with the group and they are on hand around the clock should there be any language difficulties or advice sought.

Chipping Sodbury & Yate Buy To let – Freehold House or Leasehold Flat?

W

ELL my Chipping Sodbury and Yate Property Blog reading friends, as seems to be all the rage with Jeremy Corben asking the PM questions emailed in to him at Prime Minster Question Times, I to wish to answer a question emailed into me from a potential local landlord last week. Nice chap, lives in Old Sodbury, and it turns out, after having a coffee with him, he works in IT, has a spare bit of cash (now the kids have flown the nest) and wanted to buy his first buy to let property.

His main question was ...

Do I buy a freehold house or a leasehold flat in Chipping Sodbury or Yate?

Most people will say freehold every time, because you own the land. However, it’s not as simple as that (it never would be would it!).

The definitive answer though is to research what Yate and Chipping Sodbury tenants want in the area! The tenant is ultimately your customer, and, if they don’t want to rent what you decide is best to buy, then you are not going to have a successful BTL investment.

So starting with the tenant in mind and working backwards from there, you won’t go far wrong. In a nutshell, find the demand before you think about creating the supply.

Leasehold flats and apartments in Sodbury and Yate are excellent in some respects as they offer the landlord certain advantages, including the fact a flat can be initially cheaper to buy. Yields can be quite good, offering better cash flow. The building will already be insured and yes there is a service charge, but it’s still for a service at the end of the day and that cost is spread between many others (i.e. when your freehold house roof goes, its falls 100% on your shoulders) and one of my favourites is that there is often no garden to maintain or blown down fences to replace!

However, some Chipping Sodbury and Yate leasehold flats can suffer from poor capital growth. Some leasehold properties have no cap on the level of the service charge and it may get out of control. The length of the lease will significantly affect value if not renewed before it gets too short.

Thankfully there’s not many, but some Chipping Sodbury/Yate apartments/flats have burdensome clauses. Finally, with leases, there can be sub-letting issues – which means you can’t let them out.

So what do the numbers look like? Well since 2003, the average freehold property in Chipping Sodbury and Yate (detached, semis and terraced) has risen from £163,899 to £269,028, a rise of 64% whilst the average Yate and Chipping Sodbury leasehold

property (flats and apartments) has gone up in value from £78,000 to £115,000, a rise of 47%.

I was really interested to note that of the 13,124 rental properties in the South Gloucestershire Council area that the Office of National Statistics believe are either let privately or through a letting agency, 4,059 of them (or 30.9%) are apartments. However, there are only 12,530 apartments in the whole council area (be they owned, council rented or privately rented), which represents 11.7% of the whole housing stock in the area.

This really intrigued me that, quite obviously, there is a high proportion of Sodbury and Yate’s leasehold apartments/flats rented to tenants compared to detached, semi’s or terraced. Fascinating don’t you think?

Every Chipping Sodbury and Yate apartment , every terraced house or semi is different. Like I said at the start, the definitive answer though is to research what Yate and Chipping Sodbury tenants want in the area.. Demand for town centre and local apartments, near transport links can be popular and can offer Sodbury and Yate landlords very good yields with minimal voids. However, terraced houses and semis, whilst not always offering the best yields

(although sometimes they can), they do offer the Sodbury and Yate landlord decent capital growth.

My advice to the prospective landlord as it is to you is do your homework. One such website, which only talks about the Chipping Sodbury and Yate buy to let Property Market, is the Sodbury and Yate Property Blog.

Another source of info many Sodbury and Yate landlords use is me! What many Local landlords do, irrespective of whether you are a landlord of ours, a landlord with another agent or a DIY landlord, if you see any property in Chipping Sodbury, Yate or the surrounding area, that catches your eye as a potential buy to let property, be it a terraced house, semi or flat ... email me and I will email you back with my thoughts (although I will tell you what you need to hear .. not want to hear!)

Petition attracts Celebrating our historic past – more names Chipping Sodbury Heritage Trail MORE signatures have been OVER the course of the year we have looked at the six properties in Chipping Sodbury that feature a commemorative plaque and are part of the town’s heritage trail.

We now look at some of the other prominent buildings in the town, many with a story to tell or with a colourful history.

The trail can be followed with the help of a map that is available at the entrance to Hatherell’s Yard, while a trail guide is available at the Tourist Information Centre.

The Moda House effectively closes the upper end of the High Street and is an important feature often pictured in both old and new photographs of the main thoroughfare.

Once known as View House, the Moda takes its name from a suburb of Istanbul, formerly Constantinople.

Built in the 17th century, J91821 AF Xmas Advert_Layout 1 the house has predominantly been occupied by surgeons and

general practitioners, including Dr Alfred Grace, brother of the legendary England cricketer WG Grace.

But in the 1700s, Ebenezer Ludlow and Septimus Hardwicke occupied the premises and were involved with setting up the Bank of Chipping Sodbury, which published its own notes.

The Ludlow family was also partly responsible for the early education of Edward Jenner, the pioneer of the smallpox vaccination.

Dr Grace moved to Chipping Sodbury in the late 1860s to practice medicine and took over View House from a Dr Brookman, a local physician and surgeon.

The Grace family developed a long association with Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club, with no fewer than ten members of the family, including WG, having 20/11/2013 09:19 Page 1 donned the whites to represent one of the country’s oldest

established cricket clubs.

In the late 1920s, View House became the home and surgery of Dr Haig Sarafian and remained as such until the practice moved to neighbouring Yate.

Dr Sarafian had spent his early years in Moda and decided to change the name of the building in recognition of the suburb.

In the early 1970s, after a period of refurbishment, the house became a hotel.

Guided Tours Anyone involved with a club or group can book a guided tour of the heritage trail, which takes about 45 minutes. It includes a talk on each of the properties with a commemorative plaque and a brief overview of many of the other historic properties in the town.

Pledge from health chiefs and council leaders on action to further cut smoking levels NEW moves are being made to cut the number of smokers in South Gloucestershire.

A tobacco control scheme, youth prevention programme and a campaign to reduce smoking in pregnancy are just some of the latest steps being taken to encourage more smokers to give up.

Now the director of public health in the district, Professor Mark Pietroni, and South Gloucestershire Council leader, Matthew Riddle, have also pledged support to a national project to help protect people from preventable diseases such as lung cancer.

The local authority declaration on tobacco control commits the council to specific actions to reduce smoking prevalence and health

inequalities among local communities.

Professor Pietroni said it was necessary to promote a shift in social attitudes so that choosing not to smoke was encouraged.

He said: “It’s really important that we continue to reduce the attractiveness of tobacco, particularly to young people, and that everyone plays their part to protect children from the harm of second-hand smoke.

“We are also working to stop the trade in illegal tobacco sales and we are involved in the national second-hand smoke campaign which highlights the hidden dangers that smoking in homes and cars can cause to children’s health.”

work we are already doing locally to inform people about the serious damage smoking can cause.”

There are currently nearly 45,000 smokers in South Gloucestershire - 16.7 per cent of the area’s population – and Yate is among places in the district that runs regular Smokefree sessions to help people quit the habit. Some 17,000 under-fives are also admitted to hospital across the country annually as a result of passive smoking and Cancer Research UK estimates that 430 children in England start smoking every day.

Hospital to host awareness event on spinal arthritis AN awareness evening on a form of spinal arthritis will be held at Southmead Hospital in the New Year.

The event on Tuesday, January 26 is open to those with ankylosing spondylitis, healthcare professionals and anyone with an interest in the condition.

Top coaching qualification for event rider Nick CHIPPING Sodbury event rider Nick Gauntlett has earned one of the most important coaching qualifications in the world.

He has been awarded the prestigious title of Fellow of the British Horse Society, joining a limited number of people globally to have made the grade.

The society said the fellowship was the highest recognition of professional standards across the equine industry. It was introduced 66 years ago but just 80 people have become fellows since then and currently there are just 53 on the roll of honour.

Candidates have to “display in-depth knowledge and effectiveness in all aspects of equitation and horsemanship” to reach the standards required and be someone to who others can turn to for advice in all equestrian activities.

As well as competing internationally, Nick is in demand at home and overseas as a trainer. He said he was “very honoured” to have achieved the qualification.

No loss November as Sodbury power into promotion places

Three wins out of three left Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club in second place as they eye up a good run into the Christmas Break

Berry Hill 1st XV – 8 Chipping Sodbury 1st XV – 9 The paths of Sodbury and Berry Hill have never crossed so there was a huge element of the unknown before the kick off.

Sodbury started with the wind at their backs and it was obvious that the weather would influence the game. The wind wasn’t the only factor at work and Sodbury’s pack had to work tirelessly to provide the ball for their exciting backs, who were undeterred by the wet and sticky conditions. Berry Hill found themselves pressed back by the wind and the ferocity of Sodbury’s back row of Jason Petchey, Matt Cook and Luke Carnaby who created mayhem at the breakdown.

Sodbury’s only reward from a 20 minute battering of their opponents was a penalty from the boot of Dan Bradley. From the restart Sods continued to attack and 5 minutes later won another penalty thanks to Bradley. Berry Hill rallied and managed to spend a good period in Sodbury’s half, opting for lineouts over kicks at goal if they infringed. Any turnover was pounced upon and carried back to Hill. Steve Hopes and Pete Butcher featured for Sodbury and inspired with their tireless work and eye for a gap.

Joe Horton continues to dominate with his powerful surging runs a feature of every

game. His contribution was complemented by the return of Jake Lewis, whose flashing feet and accurate tackling always entertain.

The thunderous rucking continued and, in desperation, Berry Hill infringed allowing Bradley the opportunity to make it 0 – 9.

On the stroke of half time Sodbury lost influential no.8 Cook to a yellow card. Berry Hill kicked for goal to make it 3 – 9.

Sodbury went into the second half with real purpose and used a series of lineouts and scrums to build a platform. The front row featured prominently with Dave Guest making his usual line breaks. Despite all this effort the away side failed to increase their lead and once control of the ball was lost, Berry Hill kicked it half way to build some pressure of their own.

From out wide Chris Hamilton posted a memorable performance dealing well with the high ball. His tackling and powerful runs gave his pack confidence and the occasional breather. Glamorous lead driller Dave Telford replaced Carnaby for the last 20 minutes and cemented his reputation as an all-action nononsense number 7. His stupendous tackle count went a long way to keeping Sodbury in the game.

The commitment shown throughout the team was nothing short of amazing.

Hill forward pack, the Sodbury line was at its thinnest out wide and there was little they could do to stop the try. However, the conversion was missed, bringing with it a huge sigh of relief from Sodbury’s soggy supporters. The final whistle went 2 minutes later and the players showed their jubilation, knowing that not many teams will come to Berry Hill and walk away with a victory.

Sodbury breeze past Tewkesbury Chipping Sodbury 1st XV – 28 Tewkesbury 1st XV – 7 SODBURY set about their task with a diagonal wind in their favour but early pressure recorded no points on the board due to handling errors. An uncharacteristic penalty miss unwittingly set up Sodbury’s first try when the ensuing 22 dropout was gathered in a fine aerial display by Phil Player.

Jason Petchey ran tirelessly all game, clearing out the ruck and producing some quick ball which fizzed across the back line before finding skipper Steve Hopes fully 30m from the try line. With his beard flowing over his shoulder he embarrassed the cover tacklers to score next to the uprights.

Sodbury set up camp in the Tewkesbury 22 for the next 10

minutes but were frustrated by their own errors and a manful Tewkesbury defence. A lineout well into the Sods own half following a huge relieving kick from the visitors led to a pinpoint throw from eventual Man of the Match Dave Guest. The ball was pinged out into the centre for Joe Horton who set off a passage of play that saw multiple rucks, pounding runs and inter-passing that gave Dan Bradley the opportunity to unlock the final line of defence and run through for a try.

Sodbury kept at it for the rest of the half as they tried to make the most of the conditions but they failed to convert their numerous line breaks into tries as passes were dropped.

Early in the second half, with Tewkesbury pressing hard, Sodbury’s defence went

into overdrive. From a 5-metre lineout they forced the visitors back to halfway with their tackling. The combative nature of the Sodbury lineout was a feature of the half as any attempts by Tewkesbury to gain a foothold in their 22 were wiped out by the Sodbury jumpers.

A Sodbury scrum on the Tewkesbury 10m line produced quick ball that once again found the marauding Horton. He got to within 10m of the try line and in the shadow of the posts popped the ball up off the floor, allowing the pack to swarm in.

After 3 rucks which were once again defended heroically, up stepped Hopes. The crowd had been treated to a display of his pace and now they marvelled at his raw power and determination as he burst through the tight defence.

Tewkesbury used the wind to keep Sodbury in their own half and enjoyed some success with the ball in hand. Sodbury were indebted to the likes of Ryan Halford, who dealt with any breaks from fullback. But, as Tewkesbury kept pressing, Sodbury started infringing, and eventually the pressure told and a try was inevitable.

Stung by conceding a try, Sods applied a huge amount of pressure from the restart.

Eventually Tewkesbury got a lineout just outside their own 22, but nobody could believe the miss-pass that they threw.

On hand was tricky winger Ben Taylor, to intercept and sail in beneath the uprights for a fourth bonus point try. Bradley stepped up to convert as he had three times before, wrapping up a weather-influenced game.

CHIPPING Sodbury welcomed Yeovil Ladies, formerly known as Ivel Barbarians to The Ridings for their third home game of the season and the first of no doubt many wet and windy afternoons ahead.

CSFRC Ladies have conceded only five tries this season racking up 24 of their own ahead of this game which turned out to be a one sided affair.

Sodbury kicked off and played into the wind against Yeovil for the first half.

Aileen O’Connell charged towards the posts to crash over the line for the first of six tries after a powerful Sodbury surge.

The conversion by Prop Michelle Deverill boosted the home side’s confidence and forced the opposition into a defensive position for much of the rest of the half.

Amy Brooks was next to storm into the opposition’s twenty-two, offloading to Becky Petchey and setting up a powerful forwards maul.

Noticing that the drive had slowed and spotting that the ball at the back, Isabel Crew took charge and peeled the ball from Petch who belly flopped over the line. Unfortunately the wind had picked up considerably by this point and blew the following conversion off course.

Unbeaten Sodbury Ladies power on

A FIRST run out of the season for the newly formed Chipping Sodbury Little Ladies U13s rugby team left them with much to savour and plenty to encourage them for future encounters.

A trip to Drybrook was the first outing for many of the players but neither this nor the mud deterred them from competing in what was their first full contact game.

Some encouraging spells in attack and defence was not enough to avoid an

opening defeat, however any disappointment quickly faded following a quick turnaround into their second game which resulted in a first try for Jasmine Darby and a draw for the team.

Confidence grew with captain Lara Woodhouse leading from the front and Isobel Palmer and Jemima Forrester eating up the tackle count.

having dummied the defender in her path to sprint over half the length of the pitch to score next to the posts. A broken ankle for Martine Richardson forced her from the park, but Sodbury continued the pressure.

Katie Lane’s efforts were finally rewarded when a gap opened in front of her allowing a run down the right to score in the corner. On the stroke of half time mark Michelle Deverill was also lost to injury, to be replaced by Vikki Britton.

Aileen O’Connell who had been brilliantly vocal all game came

off for Sophie Jenkins resulting in an entire shift in the front row. The change had little affect on the structure and the scrums remained solid. With Deverill off, Paige Muxworthy who had been training at fly half stepped in to take the remaining kicks using her impressive boot in the blustery conditions to secure a further 4 points.

The second half was somewhat less eventful with the weather beginning to take its toll.

Replacements and general fitness kept the game flowing and the only real threat from Yeovil was a

breakthrough from the fullback that was thwarted by a try saving tackle from replacement Kelly Anne Garland.

Chessie Kelly appeared to finish the game, with Petchey drawing the defender and holding the pass perfectly to float the ball at the last minute for Kelly to score the try she’d been working so hard for this season.

The final points of the game gave Katie Lane her second try and the home side a 40-0 victory.

Chipping Sodbury remain unbeaten this season and retain top spot in the league table.

Rugby kids encouraged by first run out determination. The game turned out to be somewhat of an epic in which some great interaction play featuring Carla Whiting Hayes lead to a very close battle with the opposition snatching a late and decisive lead.

Chipping Sodbury’s first win came in the fourth game with some excellent support work from Cerys Strait allowing Jaya Hunt to let her legs do the talking with some sublime side steps and mazy runs leading to a glut of tries.

A tiring side had to dig deep and play with a never say die attitude in the final match of the day. Eleanor Finch made some miraculous tackles bringing down girls twice her size but the opponents proved too strong and came away deserved winners.

Ellana Scott-Bowen was chosen by water boy specialist Reuben as girl of the day for her consistency and the team go into their next training session with vigour and a spring in their step.

Frustrating month makes it six without a win for Yate YATE saved their best performance of November until the last game of the month securing a highly credible away draw to second in the table North Leigh.

Having fallen behind to a controversial close range goal from Jon Else in just the second minute, the point earned felt more like three and was just reward for a hard working team effort.

North Leigh’s flying start followed a long consultation between the referee and his assistant after the latter had flagged for offside only for the officials to let the goal stand and put the home side one up.

Yate showed great character and fought back to equalise on the half hour mark with captain Brett Trowbridge scoring his first goal for the club, ably assisted by youth team debutant Lewis Powell.

The second half failed to match the action packed first and with relatively little goalmouth activity a draw was a fair result.

A visit to high-flying Banbury United at the beginning of the month rather set the tone for a poor November for Yate, with the home side running out 2-0 winners. Yate enjoyed the lions share of possession but failed to trouble the oppositions keeper and a goal in each half settled it for Banbury.

Premier Division Merthyr Town were next to visit Lodge Road for a second round Red Insure League Cup tie. Injuries and unavailable players reduced both sides to much changed lineups, but spectators were treated

to an exciting and open fixture with all the goals coming in the first 45 minutes.

On 12 minutes Yate took the lead following a flowing move down the left flank ending with a well-taken Camen Harvey volley at the far post.

The lead lasted just three minutes when Corey Jenkins equalised for the visitors and then a few moments later Kayne McLaggon took full advantage of a defensive error to put Merthyr two one up.

The visitors increased their lead before the break when Jaye Bowen capitalised on yet another error and despite a Jake Jackson effort hitting a post, Yate were

OLD Sodbury Boys FC continued their bright start to the season with a high scoring run of victories in November.

A visit to Stoke Lane Panthers resulted in a club record 14-0 victory, with free scoring Ross Womack being the Panthers chief tormenter continuing his excellent start to the season with yet another five-goal haul.

Womack almost repeated the feat at home to highflying AEK Boco Colts with a personal tally of four, ably assisted by Robbie Foxwell who bagged a hat trick in a fine 13-3 victory on a heavy home pitch. Foxwell replicated

his achievement the following week as his team secured a fine 8-3 victory in wintry conditions at Downend Saints Colts.

With maximum points from their opening eight matches Old Sodbury’s success has very much been a team effort. Womack and Foxwell have been finding the net in every game but other players have also contributed with Ethan Lloyd in fine form on 10 goals for the season and fellow winger Miles Theobald up to seven. Callum Heaphy’s move from defence to attack has so far yielded four goals; Dan Watson has dispatched two thumping

Wimborne Town’s visit provided the most disappointing result of a difficult month with yet more defensive errors proving costly. An opportunist goal from Jamie Davidson gave Wimborne the lead on 37 minutes when a flighted shot from fully 40 yards left Martin Horsell stranded. Jackson missed the simplest of close range chances to give Yate an equaliser before the break.

A tremendous shot by Franklyn Clarke that swerved into the top corner increased Wimborne’s lead on the hour but Yate managed to reduce

the arrears almost immediately when Jake Jackson applied the finishing touches to a goal-bound in-swinging cross by Jake Cox. Yate looked more than capable at this stage of finding an equaliser but Wimborne regained their two-goal advantage through Carl Preston and held on for a 3-1 victory.

by Hurricane Barney failed to stop either side playing attractive and entertaining football when Bishops Cleeve visited Yate.

The home side were the more positive team but were unable to penetrate the visitors defence and had to settle for a goalless draw.

St Nicks take step up in their stride ST. Nicks U12 Greens continued their recent run of good form recording their third straight win with an excellent 3-0 away win over Ashton Boys Juniors.

Playing their first season in Division 4 of the Avon Youth League the squad of 14 are finding their feet playing in 9-a side matches and building their understanding and skills ahead of next seasons move to a full size pitch and the 11 a side format.

After an even opening 10 minutes against Ashton, St Nicks found themselves dominating the battle in midfield despite a heavy playing surface. Their slick pass and move football proved to much for their opposition and after a couple of half chances and some outstanding saves, including a penalty, St Nicks found the net when their captain Dylan Venn pounced on a loose ball in the six yard box.

Their second goal followed several minutes later when striker Guy Mcewen picked up the loose ball and unleashed an unstoppable shot after running 25 yards and leaving two defenders in his wake.

The Greens stood up to everything that Ashton could throw at them. Jacob, Cameron and Adam were solid in defence with Spence in goal. Tyler, Owen, Dylan and Joel combined in midfield to outplay a taller and stronger opposition and St Nicks were on course for victory.

paid dividends as the away side continued to keep the game tight with strong defensive performances by second half substitutes William and Leon. Their third and decisive goal followed a four player passing move in which the midfield trio of Kieran, Harry and Jacob combined to put Harry Winter through on goal, who calmly slotted pass

the oncoming keeper. St Nicks continued to dominate offensively and would have added to their tally but for two outstanding saves from Jacob P and Joel by the Ashton keeper.

Managers Steve and Jay commented, “The boys worked hard and concentrated on the job in hand putting in another fine performance and truly deserved the win.”

­Tennis continues despite the weather DESPITE the recent rain, there is still plenty going on at Sodbury Tennis Club, Stephanie Gold writes. The juniors’ section continues to thrive with Katie Sillick recently selected for the county under-11 squad where she joins brother Josh Sillick who is in the county squad for the under-10’s.

The girls’ team at the club is enjoying a particularly strong start to the winter season though they have some tough matches up ahead - they will be hoping to approach these with confidence and build on their recent successes.

The club is proud to have been awarded the Tennismark Accreditation from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). Tennismark is a Sport England approved accreditation that provides a way of recognising good standards and best practice at tennis venues across Britain. It acknowledges the club as safe, welcoming and inclusive.

A cheque for £600 has been presented to Clare Burchall of Longfield (formerly Cotswold Care Home), the club’s nominated charity for this year.

YOSC looks to the future as new organisation takes over the popular sports venue THE future of Yate Outdoor Sports Complex has been secured after spending cuts had threatened the well used facility.

Negotiations lasting more than a year have resulted in a new charitable organisation being set up to run YOSC, sited next to Brimsham Green School.

The complex is now run by YOSC Ltd, which was established

by Yate Town Council and Yate and District Athletic Club to ensure the facilities - from an athletics track to sports pitches would remain for local clubs.

Until the recent change, made at the start of November, a longrunning arrangement meant Brimsham Green pupils made use of YOSC during school hours, while clubs and other users had access at other times.

Circadian Trust, which runs South Gloucestershire Council’s leisure centres, had managed the facilities outside school hours but its contract expired at the end of October, along with funding for continued community use.

The council, as part of efforts to make savings of £40 million, decided not to renew the

contract but wanted to ensure arrangements could be made to allow the dual-use to continue.

Under the agreement, sports facilities located in Brimsham Green School will be taken on by the comprehensive. South Gloucestershire also approved the transfer of more than £134,000 for future maintenance and repairs of YOSC. The complex boasts a floodlit athletics arena used for track and field events, football pitches, a cricket field and nets, as well as courts for tennis and netball.

There is also an all-weather hockey pitch, changing rooms and a clubhouse with bar.

Meanwhile, a sports hall at the school provides four courts that can be used for such activities as five-a-side football, badminton, basketball, volleyball and table tennis. It also has a dance studio.

YOSC users include national level athletes, disabled athletes, schoolchildren, toddlers and the retired and a major effort was involved in saving the complex for all of them.

Jeremy Dale, vice-chairman

of the athletic club, said a work party had already been in action to prepare the centre for the new regime, which involves the notfor-profit company running it on a voluntary basis.

He said: There is a lot to do and the company, run by unpaid directors, will need as much help as possible to make a success of the complex.

“Eventually, when the
