“I hunt for clarity as I work from memory and observation of landscapes, both rural and urban. Painting under the open skies feeds my need to create and learn from the outdoors, while its inherent unpredictability nurtures urgency and freshness. For this reason, I rarely use photographs; my work must come from life or from within. The ephemeral quality of working enpleinairis crucial to how I paint in the roofed studio where the conversation transforms as I add my experiences and internal dialogues into the mix.

I work from nature to observe shapes and how they relate to one another to help me find www.matssonart.com the intimate moment where representation and abstraction meet. I hunt to capture a protagonist to my scenes whether that be trees dancing with one another or the blue from a darkening sky behind the silhouetted tree line. My smaller oil paintings are all done in one sitting to encapsulate the intensity of that moment. As an urban dweller, nature, void of humans, has become a luxury, yet it is essential for mental health and in critical need of protection.

My practice is a reminder of how modern civilization cannot escape itself but also how nature is resilient and morphs with us no matter how much we abuse it. "
