Québec City is more than 400 years old, making it one of Canada's oldest cities. Population 638,000 Size 485.77 km2 Official Language French, but English
is widely spoken in tourist areas
Visitors Five million per year
IN WITH THE OLD. IN WITH THE NEW. Québec City is full of trends and traditions, and its joie de vivre is timeless. A place where 17th century stone buildings overlook historic battlegrounds, while close by, microbreweries serve an ever-changing roster of craft beers, and funky art installations decorate the streets. The capital of Québec, and possibly the culture capital of Canada, celebrates its heritage as much as it embraces innovative ideas. Known as the birthplace of French civilization in North America, this is a city that has both preserved and reinvented itself for more than 400 years, which is why it stands at the leading edge of technology, fine art, culinary tastes and style, and remains a preferred meeting and convention destination.
Culture Capital Québec City’s neverending Renaissance will immerse delegates of all ages. Every neighbourhood features a long cultural to-do list. Old Québec, for instance, is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Tucked among its lively streets and alleyways are restaurants and tiny shops for every interest, while flowers spring from window beds adorning old, cobble facades. Surrounding the area are the only fortified walls in North America, which span close to 4.6 kilometres. Visitors can walk along these walls and admire the characteristic cityscapes of the old town. Beyond that, modern galleries pop up next to well-respected museums and theatres. Seasonal festivals, street entertainers, music spots, film events and historic sites are all steps away. 4 www.quebecbusinessdestination.com
City Eats Renowned chefs with a taste for tradition and up-and-coming culinary artists add their own flair to the city, while local farmers sell fresh produce to restaurants inside and outside of hotels and meeting spaces. Québec City has more fine restaurants per capita than any other North American city. Delegates can dig into both international and provincial dishes that fit all budgets and tastes, whether it’s a coastal-inspired oyster and wine bar, a rustic farm-to-table eatery, a buzzy pub that attracts a young business crowd or an aromatic café that opens at sunrise. Gourmet walking tours of local shops add an engaging twist for foodies. Or, a group outing can be arranged to a local farm or sugar shack party in spring.
Business Savvy Rated one of the world’s most intelligent cities, a rich research and development community is only one reason professionals do business here. Getting around
is stress-free, there are multiple modes of transportation and it’s a walkable feat. In this live-work-play city with a highly-skilled workforce, knowledge sets the backdrop for innovation. Here, planners will find good value for their conference dollar at first-rate convention facilities like the Québec City Convention Centre, a solid base for attendees to forge strong business relationships.
Natural Beauty Conferences aren’t just panel talks and seminars; they’re an experience. From autumn to summer, picturesque views are found in every direction. Delegates are invited to stroll by the 744-mile long St. Lawrence River or book an easy canoe trip. Outings could include sunset sails from the old port, hiking or biking along a 32-kilometre riverside trail, and visiting the Plains of Abraham, a 242-acre green space within Battlefields Park, the country’s first national historic park and one of the largest in the world.

CITY SMARTS
How Québec City became a beacon for innovation
Québec City has become a hotbed for industries of every stripe - from information technology and life sciences to health and nutrition. Companies thrive because of a diverse tech community, a high quality of life and a potent educational system that supplies a well-educated workforce. For the past 20 years, steady economic growth in the Québec City region has helped secure substantial private and public research and development funding, second only to Boston. Now, the city boasts 14 industrial parks, a technology park and five industrial zones that spur a wide-range of technologies and unique expertise. Two of these include Metro High Tech Park, home to about 100 companies and research centres employing more than 5,000 workers, and The Michelet Innovation Zone, a next-gen technological park featuring Swedish-Swiss multinational ABB. There’s a kinetic business energy in Québec City that makes it a valuable host for meetings and conventions.
Education
Life Sciences
Québec City houses one of the largest populations of university students in 16 North American city regions. There are 5 universities, 16 colleges and technical schools, 22 vocational training schools and numerous facilities for specialized learning. In 2014, Infosource named Université Laval one of Canada’s Top 6 Research Universities.
Information Technologies and Electronics Sectors such as optics-photonics, digital arts, interactive entertainment and geospatial technologies mean serious business. There are more than 540 companies, 19,500 jobs and 65 research centres, chairs and clusters that support cutting-edge solutions. The city features 12 leading research centres for optics-photonics and geospatial technologies. The Centre for Optics, Photonics and Lasers is Canada’s leading university research centre in optic-photonics. RDDC Valcartier is the biggest department of national defense research and development in Canada, and CIRRELT is the world’s leading centre for transportation research.
For the past ten years, this sector has been incubating innovative techniques that are revolutionizing the health field, generating about 128 companies and 85 research centres, chairs and clusters. Québec City is home to leaders in biopharmaceuticals and diagnostics, healthrelated medical and information technologies and natural health and wellness products. The Infectious Disease Research Centre is the largest of its kind in Canada. Québec Heart and Lung Institute is a world research leader in cardiology, lung and obesity-related diseases. The Alliance Québec association mobilized hundreds of health research and innovation leaders from the Greater Québec City region. They joined forces in 2013 to address major challenges in Québec and around the world. Major life sciences player Hema-Québec will soon build C-LAVIE, a stem cell production and research complex.
Québec City is home to more than 30 companies in the digital arts and entertainment industry, which combined, generate a total of over $100 million in revenues each year. More than 1,600 professionals (both direct and indirect jobs) can be found in animation, special effects, video games, design, 3D environments and virtual and augmented reality.
“THE DIGITAL ARTS SECTOR’S SUCCESS COMES FROM AN INNOVATIVE DRIVE AND COMMON VISION OF THE CITY’S ENTREPRENEURS, CREATORS AND VARIOUS LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT. OVER THE YEARS, THESE ALLIES HAVE COME TOGETHER TO DEVELOP AN INDUSTRY THAT NOT ONLY BLENDS THE CITY’S ASTOUNDING CREATIVE MINDSET WITH THE LATEST TECHNOLOGIES—BUT ALSO FOSTERS PARTNERSHIPS SO THAT QUÉBEC CAN TAKE ITS PLACE AS A MAJOR CONTENDER ON THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE.” – MARIONA FERRER, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR – SOFTWARE, DIGITAL ARTS AND INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT, ACCORD SECTOR DIRECTOR AT QUÉBEC INTERNATIONAL, A REGIONAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AGENCY.
In The Heart Of It All The Québec City Convention Centre is strategically located on Parliament Hill, just 15 minutes from the international airport and within easy reach of more than 3,000 hotel rooms and suites. PLUG IN. LOG ON. Agri-Food Processing and Health Food Québec City is home to many companies that lead the health and food sector, a regional niche of excellence. The Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods is the largest research group in Canada dedicated to foods and the complex interactions between food components, nutrition and health. Research is being conducted at the The Québec Heart and Lung Institute in the fight against obesity and Type 2 diabetes. The Québec Health Food Consortium is a group of entrepreneurs who promote the development, production, processing and commercialization of new health foods. 8 www.quebecbusinessdestination.com
Materials and Transportation Equipment Québec City companies manufacture products in wood, metal, rubber, plastic and composite materials, along with others engaged in the fabrication of machinery and transportation equipment. The Québec Plastics and Composite Materials Research Consortium bridges the industry and the scientific community, and offers financial support for research and development projects. One key research provider is The Advanced Materials Research Centre at Université Laval, which specializes in new materials, such as synthetic and natural macromolecules, nanomaterials and biomaterials.
Ranked one of North America’s bestnetworked cities alongside Boston and San Francisco, companies have invested billions of dollars into Québec City’s high-performance telecommunications infrastructure. Wi-Fi is everywhere. ZAP Québec has quickly become the wireless resource in and around Québec City, with a network of 500 hotspots. GETTING AROUND ON THE GROUND Québec City Upper and Lower Towns are very accessible by foot. If you need a taxi, there are several companies. Flag a cab at one of the various taxi stands in the city or call for a car or Uber. Cycling enthusiasts can rent a bike and take advantage of the city's 400 kilometres of bicycle paths and bikeways, while car rentals are a great way to visit areas less than an hour from downtown. In Québec, road signs are in French; however, most signs also include international symbols. Visitors can also jump on the efficient, well-run bus network operated by Réseau de transport de la capitale (RTC), which is an ideal way to get around town. Several types of bus run all day long, serving central neighborhoods and outlying areas around town. The city’s main business areas are served by articulated Métrobuses that use reserved bus lanes to quickly get riders where they want to go. Service is available 7 days a week. For efficient travel throughout Québec, the Fédération des transporteurs par autobus - Intercity Transit is an intercity transportation network of 222 bus stations.
BY WATER The ferry links Québec City and Lévis 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It sails on the hour and half-hour during the day and on the half-hour at night. To go from point A to point B along or across the St. Lawrence River, take the taxi boat (zodiac type), and be sure to make a reservation.

GETTING THERE
ON THE GROUND
BY AIR Jean Lesage International Airport is just 20 minutes from downtown Québec City. The airport offers direct flights from many major cities in Canada, the United States and Europe. Come 2019, a U.S. pre-clearance centre will streamline connections to U.S. airports. Also up for completion is an expansion project, with ultramodern technology to help accommodate two million passengers by 2020. Airport personnel and the team at the Québec City Convention Centre work closely to meet the transportation needs of attendees.
For event-goers who live close enough to arrive through filmstrip windows views, VIA Rail Canada offers daily service between Toronto, Ottawa, Montréal and Québec City. Visitors traveling by train from the U.S. come into Montréal via Amtrak, then transfer to VIA Rail Canada trains for Québec City. Québec City has two train stations: Gare de Sainte-Foy and Gare du Palais (Central Station), a two-storey châteauesque station similar in design to the Château Frontenac.
AIRLINES SERVING QUÉBEC CITY:
There are four modes of bus travel that arrive at either the Gare du Palais Bus Terminal or Sainte-Foy Terminal. For those traveling by car, The Québec City area boasts nearly 4,500 km of interconnected highways linking it with Canada’s eastern, central and western provinces as well as U.S. border states. Montréal is a short hop away via Highway 20, which parallels the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, or Highway 40, which traverses its north shore. Motorists heading due south can take Highway 73 directly to the U.S. border.

Q&A WITH REDSTONE AGENCY
Planners Carly Silberstein and Bailey Roth organized their first Québec City event in 2012. Here, they chat about planning and favourite go-to spots. Redstone Agency: Millennial-owned event and association management agency Office Base: Toronto, Ontario Planning Essentials: Google Docs mobile app to update spreadsheets, documents and presentations on the go. Smartphone. Slack. Outlook app. Strong internet connection.
What is it like planning an event in Québec City? The level of hospitality you experience by venues and suppliers in Québec City, especially during the planning process, is impressive. We also feel like the city understands the importance of what ‘the experience’ means to planners and their clients. How is corporate planning evolving? Timelines for planning events are shorter and there is an emphasis on creating a ‘wow’ factor and an experience for attendees, so the event is one they won’t forget. We also find that clients are willing to spend money on creating these experiences, whereas before, budgets were tight. Tips for engaging corporate clients in Québec City? If your client wants to be immersed in a city with rich culture and unique and memorable restaurants and activities, without having to leave the country, Québec City is the best place to go. The city is beautiful, vibrant and peaceful at the same time. Favourite pre- or post-conference spots? When traveling for business, we always try to see the destination, but time is always limited. If you have to ‘do Québec City in one day,’ we recommend eating at Le Clocher Penche, and if that doesn’t fancy your palate, there are an incredible number of bistros within a block of the corner of Rues Saint-Paul and du Sault-au-Matelot. Check out Place-Royale, a small but picturesque square that was the site of the first European colony in Canada, and go antiquing along Rue Saint-Paul.
