executive vice president's message

MCABC must dare to be wrong

I

recently heard a presentation on our education system that included the following story: An art teacher’s attention was caught by a sixyear-old student who was immersed in a drawing project. The

teacher asked what she was drawing and the girl replied that it was a picture of God. The teacher commented, “Nobody knows what God looks like.” The girl replied, “They will in a minute.” The presenter’s point was that kids are not frightened of being wrong. His next point was that you can be original only if you are prepared to be wrong. We run our companies the same way. If the education system kills creativity, and corporations sing from the same song sheet, how will the industrious and entrepreneurial ever do any better than just being mediocre? At the same time, the question arises: how important is it to be original?

The biggest challenge going forward will be for the association...to identify that creative big idea...

Perhaps for some organizations it is not important to be original. For those who avoid originality, the following cliché applies: If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always got. For some, that’s good enough. It’s possible that is the mantra for trade associations — we

joined you because you are reliably unchanging. The reality is that change is constant, whether trade associations recognize it or not and in my opinion staying the same won’t cut it for associations, MCABC included. Fortunately MCABC has already embarked on a journey of organizational transition brought about by a change in funding. Organizational change has separated MCABC from what were integrated entities that helped support the association, and now MCABC must learn to support itself without them. The biggest challenge going forward will be for the association, under its new leadership, to identify that creative big idea, prepare to be wrong, but to move it forward so that the mechanical sector can coalesce under one organization — MCABC — that will continue to represent the interests of mechanical contractors with strength and purpose. A few years back I came across a statistic that there are close to 3,000 companies that self-reported as mechanical or plumbing contractors in B.C. The big idea may be as simple as going after those contractors with some creative and original proposals to entice them to become members. Even being wrong might still gain MCABC 1,500 new members! At its most basic, the association is an information resource and

MCABC of the future will have to add several arrows of original actions to

its quiver if it hopes to hit its target of truly being the association for all of B.C.’s mechanical contractors.

projects are going to take off in 2019.” With more anticipated work, the current shortage of skilled tradespeople will only grow. Welsh says the market is busy, especially with the annual maintenance shutdowns for most industrial facilities which require hundreds of tradespeople. “Right now large shutdowns and capital projects are straining the workforce,” he says. Another issue is the steel and aluminum tariff war with the U.S., which is creating supply shortages and driving up prices. B.C. is particularly vulnerable with limited suppliers. For TVE, the impact has been minimal so far but Welsh says, “fabricators won’t hold prices for more than 10 days due to the tariffs and general uncertainty.” At 63, Welsh is still very dedicated to growing the company, but is contemplating retirement with a succession planning strategy in place. “We’re going to focus on taking the company to the next level and maintaining our high level of safety and quality,” he says. “The next five to 10 years in B.C. look positive.” PM
