saC welcomes you to COnSaC – imageMakers 2012 Dear Members, It is no secret that we live and work in a fast-paced, ever-changing world and the sign business is no different. Materials have changed, equipment is bigger and faster, labour is up and markets are changing... it would be rare indeed to fi nd a company that hasn’t changed dramatically in the last 15 years and the Sign Association is the same. We have seen major changes and new people within the association; municipal sign bylaws are the flavour of the day, we have more international exhibitors than ever before and the number of members continues to grow. I commend those of you that have kept up with the changes over the years. I also thank the many people and companies that have supported the Sign Association of Canada over the past years. In the last year the Association has taken steps to create a more national organization by reaching out to the various regions and chapters as well as to individual members. A representative of the Association or board has striven to be present at the various AGMs and trade shows throughout the country. The Board itself met for a special meeting to hear the concerns unique to individual regions. What we learned was that we need to continue to reach out with the goal to understand what each chapter needs and strive to meet those needs. Some of this involves re-writing our bylaws and policies to reflect today’s environment as well as meet the new government regulations. But more importantly, we are looking at increasing our communication and become a resource that the Canadian sign industry can look to and rely upon. How can you help? By being involved with your own chapter. I understand how busy everyone is, however, I’m not asking you to join a board or volunteer for a committee. I am asking you to increase your involvement in small ways. For example: Sign up for the annual golf tournament in your region, or register and attend your local sign trade show and bring your team or make plans to attend the CONSAC national show. When was the last time you attended the AGM? You may feel that you don’t add to the event but your very presence shows your support for the association. I challenge everyone to extend themselves in one of these ways over the next year and let’s help form and build the Canadian Sign Association into a world class trade association that we all want it to be. Thank you again for your continued support and I wish all of you a successful and prosperous year.

Presented by: Jon Goldman, President of Brand Launcher, a strategic business and marketing company with a team across the US, Canada, Israel and South Africa. Previously he was co-owner of one of the largest promotional-products companies in the US, with sales of $20,000,000+. Goldman is a talented mentor and trainer, the founder of Lumpy Mail®, and a popular speaker at conventions and trade shows whose powerful and entertaining presentations have been rated “#1 for Takeaway Content.” Goldman and his team have worked with IBM, National Geographic, and Häagen-Dazs, in addition to numerous smallto-midsized businesses. He is the author of two works on business and marketing strategy and his campaigns have been featured on NBC and CBS and in The Wall Street Journal and BusinessWeek. Come to this entertaining, information-packed session with marketing expert Jon Goldman and discover five real-world marketing strategies you can apply in your own business NOW. Discover: • the worst mistake most sign businesses are making - and how to avoid it • how to leverage your budget by targeting “hungry fish” • proven direct marketing strategies for reaching your best prospects • 3 ways to generate “buzz” – without spending a fortune • the most powerful word to use in your marketing (not ‘free’ or ‘you’) Social Marketing on Speed – Crash Course Social marketing can be the best thing that ever happened to your sign business. But Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn can eat you alive with hours of unproductive time squandered online. And who has the time, or the patience, to put it all together? Here’s your chance to tackle social networking and viral marketing - without losing your mind. This crash course reveals powerful tools and techniques to harnessing social marketing with a minimum time commitment. Learn the tricks-of-the-trade and

find out how to automate your social marketing and begin engaging customers like never before. • How to go from “just another sign vendor” to “the trusted expert” • What you CAN do and what you absolutely CAN’T do with viral marketing • How to set your Twitter and Facebook accounts on virtual autopilot • The “kiss of death” for your online marketing efforts – and how to avoid it Seminar 2 11:45 am – 1:15 pm 100 Ways to Boost Your Dynamic Sales Cycle

Presented by: Skip Grant is a well known industry enthusiast that has motivated dealers and endusers over the past 27 years in the sign, screenprint & label industries. He is creator and president of three companies: Skip Grant Productions – a motivational consulting company, Grant Graphics – a digital printing equipment & supplies dealer in upstate New York and Saratoga Printing Center - a wholesale digital printing provider. As a business coach, his energy, purpose and passion for what he does is evident in “Sell more, save time, reduce stress and dramatically increase your profits!” (for the large format digital print & cut workflow) This enthusiastic presentation will inspire you to be much more profitable by improving all steps of your sales cycle! Based on the popular “100 Ways to make money with a printer/cutter...”, this presentation addresses all aspects of a successful job cycle from the initial sales call to final graphic installation. In part 1, “Getting the Work”, Skip Grant will offer great insights on penetrating 100’s of new markets open to large format digital printers! Using effective sales tools he will illustrate how to up-sell, crosssell and re-sell new clients or existing customers while maintaining a professional business style embedded with higher profit found in proper specifying, pricing and proofing strategies. In part 2, “Doing the Work”, he will touch on key areas to increase efficiency in your print production workflow to save time, eliminate mistakes, reduce

stress and to maintain a positive work environment! The idea is to earn more money by selling more product at higher prices, but to maintain the profit by producing jobs quickly and efficiently! Whether your developing new opportunities or boosting the business you have, this coaching session is for you! Seminar 3 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm LED Lighting Systems – Designing for Reliability

Presented by: Bruce Quaal. In 2000, Bruce Quaal joined the engineering staff at SloanLED. Currently he is the Director of Engineering for SloanLED. He has been designing LED lighting systems specifically for the sign industry for the past nine years. Prior to SloanLED, he worked at Eaton Corporation where he first started working with LEDs in cockpit lighting for aircraft. He holds a Bachelors Degree in mechanical engineering from California State University In the past ten years LED lighting systems have become more prevalent in the sign industry. This increased demand for a more robust, energy efficient lighting source has led to a variety of commercial products sold in the marketplace. Since no standard exist for designing and engineering LED lighting systems, the sign manufacturers make decisions based on initial cost and light output without taking into account the more important characteristics like longevity, reliability, and the heat management design of the system. This comprehensive examination will review the various types of LEDs with respect to drive current, heat management, and its effect on the lifespan of the LED chip. Learning Objectives: Understanding the different types of LED chips that are used in LED lighting systems for signage. These four categories; Bi-Pin, High Flux, Surface Mount, and Chip on Board, will be explained defining the attributes for each. Comprehending the limits of drive current for each type of LED chip. How LED system manufacturers designing with heat management in mind will allow for longer life of the LED chip.
