2015 Canadian Apartment Series Show Guide
BREAKFAST & LUNCH
Welcome to the 2015 Canadian Apartment Symposium Series
Hello and welcome to the 2015 Canadian Apartment Symposium Series on North American New Apartment Construction. It is our honour and pleasure to present to you this two-day event highlighting the opportunities available in purpose-built rental apartment housing. We are excited by the possibilities, and looking forward to sharing our enthusiasm with you.
It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 2015 Canadian Apartment Symposium Series. As many of you may know, MediaEdge Communications Inc. has been an active player in the multi-family space for over 25 years, producing many recognizable trade magazine and digital media products, including Canadian Apartment magazine, Condominium Business magazine, Canadian Property Management magazine and the REMI Network.
Over the next two days, you will hear from experts in the field of development, construction, financing and building management. We will talk about student housing, new technologies in building construction, how to navigate the development process, and how to win over financiers, development officials, universities to your vision. In addition to the experts sharing their expertise, you will get a chance to meet many people interested in investing in this exciting field.
Since 1987, we have had the pleasure of being involved in a number of Canadian real estate trade shows and conferences. We understand through first-hand experience what drives the success of a conference. We are very proud of what has been developed for this year’s Symposium and we sincerely look forward to your opinions of this year’s education program, the trade show floor and our social/networking events.
Purpose-built rental apartment construction and management continues to be the best performing sector of the real estate industry. A perfect storm of limited supply and rising demand has driven down vacancy rates and raised average rents. Interest rates are low, cap rates have compressed, and government regulations and red tape have eased. In cities across Canada, municipal and provincial governments are looking for innovative ways to provide affordable housing. New technologies have arrived, shortening construction times and getting product onto the marketplace earlier. At the 82 universities across Canada, students and their parents are looking for better accommodations, and are willing to pay top dollar for it.
At this time I would like to thank and recognize our 2015 Symposium sponsors. As of press time, our Platinum Sponsor is Humphreys & Partners Architects, L.P.; our Gold Sponsor is The Chamberlain Companies – Managers, Architects, Contractors; our Bronze Sponsors are Arthur J. Gallagher Canada, Bonneville Homes, First National Financial, HIP Developments/Melloul Blamey Construction, iSPAN Systems, The Marq by Centurion, and People’s Trust Company; and our Supporting Industry Sponsors are Commercial Focus Realty, Domus Property Services, Pavlov Media, and REID’s Heritage Properties. We’d also like to thank our show exhibitors. The support of these organizations has helped shape this year’s symposium and our sincere thanks go out to them.
It’s time to build new apartments, Canada. The conditions are perfect for realizing substantial returns on investments, so long as investors approach the marketplace armed with the best knowledge available. The road to acquiring that knowledge starts here. Enjoy yourselves and take part in the coming sessions. We look forward to meeting all of you, and sharing in the exciting opportunities ahead.
On behalf of our partners at ROCK Advisors and our 2015 sponsors and exhibitors, we hope you have a great Symposium! Chuck Nervick Senior Vice President, MediaEdge Communications Inc.
