The design competition fora new fountain for Market Square has now run its course anda proposal isto go before the Planning Committee. The Committee will doubtless consider issues of scale, context and setting for the fountain, not to mention artistic merit. Public discussion has been clouded by the modernv tradition conflict, with an apparently finely balanced predilection for the former. The fountain isa component ina revamped floorscaping treatment for the Square, itself a casualty of public and political controversy. The time has surely arrived for proper and decisive action. The fountain competition follows five years on from the competition for the Market Square itself. Cambridge Architecture 13, reporting the results in 1990, stated The problems of the Market Sguare are notsuch that they may be solved by superficial interventions to do with floorscape and marginal sn//King of trading stalls, or even theintroduction ofa fountain.
