For project 1 the studio was split into two groups and each group was then sent to one of two different locations in the Belfast area. My group was tasked with assessing the various barriers in Short Strand whilst the other looked at the division between Ligoniel and Squires Hill.
Short Strand is a small Catholic enclave situated in the East Belfast area, it is surrounded by a mainly Protestant community, as a result the area has suffered a large amount of sectarian fuelled violence in its past.
In an attempt to reduce the violence between the two communities a series of peace walls were erected to ensure that both of the opposing communities were kept separated. These walls were constructed from brick and steel however when you take the time analyse the area you can find other measures that were put in place. These less obvious peace can be referred to has “Hidden Barriers” and they have just as strong of an impact on the area.
“You must set about it more slowly, almost stupidly. Force yourself to write down what is of no interest, what is most obvious, most common, most colourless.”

The buildings stand one beside the other. They form a straight line. They are expected to form a line, and it’s a serious defect in them when they don’t do so. They are then said to be ‘subject to alignment’, meaning that they can by rights be demolished, so as to be rebuilt in a straight line with the others.
