“A stone church spire by the green offers a glimmer of redemption, but you’re probably into the wind, and hope is two clubs farther than you think.”
Tom Cone, "Yardage Book: Splendour"
This poetic line reflects the blend of challenge and beauty that golf can offer, where hope is often just out of reach, even in picturesque settings

"The secret of good golf course design is to make the player think, but not make them think too much."
— Donald Ross
"I’M NOT SAYING MY GOLF GAME IS BAD, BUT IF I GREW TOMATOES, THEY’D COME UP SLICED."
One Saturday morning at Bradenton Country Club, as the sun began to rise over the lush fairways, a small group of members gathered for their usual early round. The air was crisp and the course was still quiet, save for the occasional chirp of a bird. As they made their way down the first fairway, one member—let's call him Ralph—couldn’t help but marvel at the peacefulness. "There’s nothing like this," he said, pausing to take in the stillness. "It’s as if the world stops for just a few hours."
Later, as they sat on the clubhouse patio after their round, Ralph reflected on why he kept coming back. "It’s not just about the game," he said, sipping his coffee. "It’s the escape. Bradenton Country Club is more than just a golf course; it's a place where you can disconnect, recharge, and feel like you’re part of something bigger." For Ralph and many others, the club wasn’t just a place to play—it was a sanctuary, a rare spot where the pace of life slowed down, even if just for a little while
A G R O N O M Y U P D A T E
In the golf course maintenance department, we are excited to be out of project and renovation mode and concentrate on the finite details of the golf course. This ties into daily golf course setup precision, tournaments and event preparations. Overall, the golf course is healthy as we have neared the end of any significant turfgrass growth and recovery. We continued the cooler weather pattern through December. We had 15 days on record of nighttime temperatures in the 40’s and 50’s. Knowing this and experiencing it, we must be proactive in managing our liquid fertility program and traffic management.
The putting greens continue to show good health and playability. Green speeds and aesthetics do tend to fluctuate this time of year with intermittent warm and cool days. Green speeds ranged from 11.5 to 13 in the month of December, which is widespread. We will continue dialing in topdressing, fertility, rolling, and growth regulators to keep consistency as much as possible. We are moving away from our EZ locator pin placement software. We have found some inconsistencies with auto populated pin placements and feel we can configure daily placements better by other means. We should see better and more consistent placements moving forward. We look forward to your feedback.
The golf course, again, the theme will be to continue aggressive fertility programs to provide acceptable turf conditions during the cooler times of the year. With events and tournaments upcoming, tees, fairways, and roughs will be continually treated as needed to mitigate weather and increase golf play. In January, we are doing a wall-to-wall granular fertilizer application in conjunction with our liquid program. Of course, with our LPGA event approaching, our cart path-only mandate will be communicated when that begins this month.
We have begun to work on raking strategies and compacting bunkers to improve playability. We plan to continue this month to ensure improvements. Cart paths will be completed with fresh shell material where needed, and with the new cart path groomer arriving this month, we will see vast improvements. The driving range project with new grading and fresh sod is progressing nicely and looking good. We will have new target greens mown with new flags for additional practice aids by mid-month.
On behalf of the golf course maintenance team and everyone at Signature One, I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year. We extend our thanks for your support and may the year ahead bring more success and growth for us all.
We experienced some early cool weather towards the end of November; however, putting greens still maintain good health. This cooler weather will increase fertility and lessen growth regulation for good health while maintaining adequate green speed and smoothness. We will balance our practices with intermittent cool/warm patterns to keep the surfaces consistent throughout the season. We finished our sod patchwork on the greens discussed last month. We will continually top-dress and roll to bring these areas to maturation.
As the golf course gets busier, our tee boxes will show more wear. We have developed a proactive plan to help our tees flourish through the season. Some tees were already showing some stress, and knowing what we have coming weatherwise, we have incorporated a more regular liquid and granular fertility plan to offset the increased rounds of golf along with cooler weather. We are seeing some progress from added applications last month. As an update, our new bronze tee markers should arrive this month.
We completed our sod renovation areas on the fairway drainage areas. This month, we will work on increased top dressing and fertility to grow these areas into consistent and playable. Like the tees, we will increase our liquid fertility spray program along with added fertigation. Roughs tend to be the most challenging surfaces for maintaining better-thanaverage health during the winter season. We battle the consistent walk-up traffic to tees and greens and increased cart traffic on and off the fairways. When coming on board the club this past spring, I saw this challenge with the vast wear and tear due to traffic and pest damage. This has led us to bring a different mindset and objective this year to overcome this. It is a fact and challenge on every Florida golf course, but we want to be more proactive this year and provide a better product throughout the season and coming out of it. The height of the cut has been lowered to 1.5” and will be maintained there until further notice. I want to briefly explain our post system as it relates to traffic.
The post system is designed to encourage a true 90-degree cart practice and does not mean we have to drive in at the post and drive off exactly at the post. They are merely a guide to maintain the carts between the posts from tee to green.
We still have in our sights to work on bunker and cart path material consistency. We have determined in our bunker efforts that not only do we need to work on depths, but we will need to plate compact more to firm up and alleviate the fluffiness we are experiencing.
We completed our practice range renovation project this past month. The rear of the range was professionally graded and completed with sod. When the sod has matured, we will have four more target green areas to add to the practice experience.
The underlying theme of this season is to continue this health transformation of our playing surfaces we have tried to accomplish. As you have read, the key will be increased fertility, better traffic management, irrigation, and pest management. We are looking forward to seeing the results of our plans in place.
We wish everyone a happy and prosperous holiday season on behalf of the golf maintenance team, Signature One, and Fusion Golf.
Yours truly,
JAMIE MCCROSKY
TENNIS UPDATE
We wish everyone a very healthy and happy 2025!
In the New Year, Tennis will add a USTA ladies’ team. We currently have two ladies and two men’s teams that play in the Sunshine and Suncoast leagues. This league will have two singles and three doubles matches each Monday evening. In January, we will have a mixed doubles mixer in honor of Tony Rogers. Tony Rogers served on our BCC Board as the tennis representative. He was instrumental in helping us develop a fun social environment for adults and kids on the BCC courts, which we still enjoy. Tony will be moving to Arizona. Look out for details from the Racquet Center.

PICKLEBALL UPDATE
Our 2024 Holiday Pickleball event was a very festive occasion. We had twenty players participate in an individual and team mixer. Dave Leslie and Don were our two highest point scorers in the individual event, and Jill Rocklein’s team won the team event. This was followed by a tasty luncheon at the club and a new fun ornament exchange game.
The New Year will kick off in a competitive spirit with the upcoming Club Pickleball Championships. The women’s and men’s doubles event will be on Saturday, January 4th. This will be followed by the mixed doubles and singles events on January 11th.
For sign-ups and further details, please go to the TeamReach App.
We also have the Pickleball Family Fun Day on Saturday, February 1st. No playing experience is necessary. Ages 7 and up are welcome to join us for a great family experience. Individual participants are also welcome. The event starts at 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM. Please Sign up on the Team Reach. For anyone interested in learning about the top growing sport in the nation, we will be holding an “Absolute Beginner” Pickleball group on the last Saturday of each month beginning this month on the 25th from 8:00 – 9:00 AM. Each month, two of our more experienced players will be there to help you learn the rules, scoring, and how to stay out of the “kitchen,” along with other skills.
To top off February, we host our annual BCC Open on Saturday, the 15th, and Sunday, the 16th. Tournament players travel from near and far to play in our doubles and mixed doubles events. Sign-up details will be sent out soon.

THE BALL THAT COULDN’T DECIDE
FEATURING “MATT” (A FICTITCIOUS CHARACTER)
- Anonymous
The ball bounced a few times, made a dramatic splash, and then, as if giving up on life, slowly sank to the bottom with a resigned plop.
Matt stood there, staring in disbelief. His buddies were silent for a beat, then erupted in laughter. "Well, that’s one way to get a water hazard!" one of them yelled.
“I swear, that ball has a better social life than I do,” Matt grumbled, not sure if he should be more impressed or irritated. "I’ve never seen a ball so determined to take a detour."
His buddy, always ready to stir the pot, shook his head.
"Looks like that ball’s got commitment issues, Matt. Maybe it’s time to talk to it about its future."
With a heavy sigh, Matt grabbed another ball, determined to take the second shot more seriously. But as he walked to the tee, he couldn't help but laugh. After all, golf is a game full of surprises—and occasionally, the ball just has a mind of its own.
It was one of those perfect golf mornings. The sun was out, the course was quiet, and Matt was feeling unusually confident. He had just played a solid front nine, and the back nine was where the real magic was supposed to happen. As he approached the 10th tee, his friends were already gathered around, ready for their next round of jokes and friendly trash talk.
Matt lined up his shot. He was going for the green with a smooth, powerful drive. The ball launched off his driver, soaring through the air like an eagle... for about two seconds. And then, like a petulant toddler with a mind of its own, the ball abruptly veered left, slicing off the fairway like it had an appointment with a tree.
It didn’t just hit the tree, though. Oh no. It ricocheted off it, shot across the cart path, and careened into a nearby pond— only to skip across the water like a flat rock on a lazy Sunday.
is a game in which you yell ‘Fore!’ shoot six, and write down five."

QUOTE BY PAUL HARVEY RADIO PERSONALITY
TEEING UP FOR THE SHOOTOOUT
Golf is a game of endless challenge. You’re constantly competing against the course, your opponent, and most importantly, yourself.
It teaches you patience, perseverance, and humility—because no matter how good you think you are, the course will always find a way to humble you. But when you hit that perfect shot, or sink that impossible putt, it reminds you why you play: for the thrill, the beauty, and the undeniable magic of the game.
