Having grown up in Virginia, I have fond memories of visiting friends in Harrisonburg and exploring the Shenandoah Valley. I couldn’t have dreamt of a better opportunity to give back to this community than getting to serve as the Executive Director at the Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA. My experiences in sheltering have shaped my views on the needs of animals in shelters as well as those of their human companions. Animal populations in shelters are reflective of the needs of the community residents and a proactive approach to sheltering requires us to not only meet the immediate needs of the animals in our care but also those of the pets (and their owners) in our community.

We participated in Spay Day on February 26 with Anicira, where 15 shelter animals were spayed as part of a joint effort to make the animals ‘adoption ready’ and to raise awareness about the need for altering our pets. We also recently developed a transfer partnership with the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA to transfer animals from our facility to theirs in a join effort to find permanent placement for the animals. I appreciate the warm welcome that I have received to the area and am blown away by the support and offers of assistance. I am eager to continue working closely with our staff and volunteers to improve upon the lifesaving work that we perform while developing new partnerships to maximize the impact of that work. I’d love to hear your ideas and get your input. I can be reached at execdirector@rhspca.org.

He holds a B.S. in Animal Sciences from University of Maryland, College Park.

Kitten Season is Coming The term “kitten season” sounds like something out of a children’s book ― a magical time when tiny purring fur-balls sprout like blossoms beneath rainbows in dew-kissed meadows. But to animal rescuers and shelters, the mere mention of it can make them snap to attention and double-check their preparations. While big-eyed baby cats are irresistibly cute, hundreds of them can roll in all at once, makes kitten season the most challenging time of the year in shelters around the country. In most places across America, animals mate and give birth in spring. This phenomenon can be attributed to a variety of factors, such as longer days, better weather and more access to food, which means higher survival rates for the offspring of many species. Unlike other animals, though, cats can keep on reproducing, having litter after litter right up until the weather turns cold again. In 2018, The Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA took in 799 cats from May to September.

How can you help?

Become a kitten season hero this year.

Everyone reading this can become a hero this kitten season, no matter what your age, ability or resources are. In fact, it can take as little as five minutes to help save lives. You can foster a litter of kittens, donate old towels and blankets, or share a post on social media of our adorable kittens to help us find adopters. Come volunteer at the shelter, take pictures, and share them with your friends. Fostering just one litter of kittens is more like the magical time of purring fur-balls like mentioned before and you can do your part to find them loving homes. With the amount of intakes during kitten season, foster homes are a very important asset. “Send in $10 or $20, and you’ve just vaccinated a litter of kittens, or maybe you can throw a virtual kitten baby shower at work to purchase supplies off our Amazon wish list. There’s not a person out there who can’t help,” says Emily Eby, Development/ Fundraising Manager. “Community involvement is really what it takes to help the cats and kittens in our community.”

So, while kitten season isn’t an enchanting fairy tale with fluffy baby cats sliding down rainbow arcs, it doesn’t have to be an annual saga of epic floods either. We all have the power to help change the forecast. The Tattle Tails | 6
