Hot Weather Safety Tips 2016

With the summer months approaching it is important to not forget about summer safety for our furry friends. With just a few precautions you can ensure your pet will have a safe and happy summer.

Parasite Prevention - As the weather warms, flea and tick prevention becomes very important for our companion pets. It will keep your pet and home free from those nasty summer pests such as fleas and ticks. Talk to your veterinarian about the most appropriate preventative for your pet. Most over the counter preventatives are not as effective and end up in the long run more costly. Heartworm preventative is another treatment that dogs need not just during the summer months but all year long. Heartworms are transmitted through infected mosquitoes and infection can be deadly.

Directors Aaron Graves Dr. Charles H. Henderson, III Karen Mast

Dr. Nina K. Smith Butch Strawderman

Hours of Operation: Incoming Animals & Adoptions Monday–Saturday 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Wednesday evenings from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Telephone: 540-434-5270 Email: info@rhspca.org Website: www.rhspca.org Address: 2170 Old Furnace Road P.O. Box 413 Harrisonburg, VA 22802

NEVER leave your pet in a parked car- Not even for a minute! On a warm day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels. For example, on an 85 degree day the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature can reach 120 degrees. Pets can easily suffer irreversible damage or die.

The Tattle Tails is published quarterly for supporters and friends of the Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA

Provide ample shade and water - Anytime your pet is outside, make sure they have protection from the sun and heat with plenty of fresh, cool water and shade. Add ice on those really hot days. Tree shade and tarps are ideal because they don’t obstruct air flow. A doghouse does not provide relief from the heat.

ANIMAL PALOOZA! September 24: 9:30—1:30 Join us at Harrison Park in Bridgewater for our first ever Animal Palooza. This event is hosted by Rockingham Parks and Rec, with all proceeds benefiting the R-H SPCA. You can register your dog for up to three activities. Fee to compete in up to 3 events: $10 per dog. For more information or to register, call 540.564.3160, or visit www.rockinghamcountyva.gov/.

Limit exercise on hot days - Take extra care when exercising your pet in the heat. Adjust duration and intensity of exercise in accordance with the temperature. On really hot days, limit exercise to early morning or evening hours. Be especially careful with pets with white colored ears as these pets are more susceptible to skin cancer. When walking your pet remember that asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet’s feet so walk your dog on grass if possible. Always carry water with you to keep your pet from dehydrating.

Activities include:  Dog Vs. Food  Pup Pageant  Amazing K-9 Race  Dancing with the Dogs  Rockingham Ruffs Got Talent

Party of Four

| 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. | www.reverbnation.com/p4janglepop

The music of the seventies can be viewed as a reaction to the huge wake left behind by The Beatles. But by the 1980's and 1990's, the world was ready again to embrace melodic jangle pop. Power pop devotees like Matthew Sweet, the Posies, and Teenage Fanclub-clearly influenced by '60s melodies and song structure--opted for a more modern guitar sound. Bands like Counting Crows, Gin Blossoms, and Tom Petty represented middle American jangle pop, as contrasted with the mold-breaking innovation and aggression coming out of Seattle. With unerring accuracy, Party of Four plays it all and then some.
