Dear Friends, Friends like you, even during the pandemic, remembered the animals. Your continued support allowed us to help the sick, the injured, the lost and the abandoned. In fact, we helped more animals in 2020 than ever before.

We accomplished the following in 2020: • Performed 1,324 adoptions, 235 more than 2019.

• Reunited 66% of stray canines with their owners. [National average is 20%] • Increased participation in our foster program by 400%.

• Implemented a Barn Cat Program that saved the lives of 100 felines.

• Decreased shelter euthanasia by 74%.

In May of 2021, we achieved a save rate of 93% at the Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA. I am so proud to be part of a community that values animal welfare and entrusts us to carry out our mission: To create a community free of pet homelessness and animal suffering.

We are now looking to transform our collective approach to the largest animal welfare issue impacting our community today. The issue of outdoor cats, or more appropriately, Community Cats. In addition to the spay-neuter vouchers we began offering last year, we carried out a very successful pilot program working with caretakers to better manage cat colonies. These two initiatives led to 300 cats being trapped, altered, microchipped and vaccinated. We will be launching a Community Cat Program this Fall to address the gross cat overpopulation that leads to the unnecessary suffering of cats in our community.

With your support, we have been able to transform the care we provide for the animals we take in. I hope you will continue to support us as we work towards transforming the welfare of outdoor cats in our community. I look forward to sharing updates on our Community Cat Program with you.

Allison Stidham As a veteran in the animal care realm, Allison leads our medical team to help each and every pet that walks through our clinic.

“I like that no two work days are the same.

Each day presents new challenges and opportunities to develop new skills... Also the cuddles are great!” said Allison when asked about her job.

Volunteer

Gary & Jana Gary and Jana have been volunteering with us for over 10 years! They come in 2-3 times a week and walk as many dogs as they can fit into four hours, sometimes that means every single dog. They pay special attention to the ones that have been here the longest and always follow up on their journey once they get adopted. You can find them here every Saturday!

“You can tell when you meet Gary and Jana that they have the best interest in mind for the animals. They really do make a great team. I don’t know what our critters would do without them!” says Volunteer Coordinator, Dacia.

Great Community Give A local giving day hosted in April helped raise over $36,000 for our pets in need!

Thanks to many generous donors, animals with special medical needs will be able to receive treatment from our Have a Heart Fund. This fund heals broken bones and provides much-needed surgeries that improve quality of life.

Empty the Shelters The BISSELL Pet Foundation hosts multiple sponsored adoption events across the nation. We have been fortunate enough to participate in three of these events in the past year and have seen a total of 122 pets get adopted to loving homes during these special events.

Alumni Picnic In June, we invited back alumni pets and their adopters to our Second Annual Alumni Picnic at the shelter. We had giveaways, raffles, activities, food, and more! We even expanded our Waggin’ Walking Trail since the last event. Over 230 people and pets came out to enjoy the day!

Adoptions

We always have loving dogs and cats awaiting their forever home. Schedule an appointment to meet them on our website!

Intakes

Whether you found a stray animal or can no longer care for your pet, we will gladly take them in and help get them adoption- ready.

Licensing

We sell county and city animal licenses.

All you have to bring is an up-to-date rabies certificate.

Cremation

We offer private cremations for your deceased companion and can give you an imprint of their paw to remember them by.

Kids Club (ON HOLD) Let your kids learn about animals by participating in fun games, crafts, and educational activities.

Outreach Events

We welcome the opportunity to engage the community in animal welfare. We can offer you tours, classroom visits, animals at events, and more.

SUCCESS STORY

Koa

From hoarding, to happy tails! Read about Koa’s heartwarming transformation.

In early 2019, officers responded to a call for dogs in distress in Elkton, VA. On the scene, they found nineteen dogs suffering from neglect. The owner agreed to surrender thirteen of the dogs into the care of the Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA. One of these lucky thirteen was a young pit bull named Koa. Koa was only 1-year-old at the time of his rescue.

This poor dog was covered in fleas, had scars on his body, bite marks to his face, and was twenty pounds underweight. Koa had spent his young life in neglect, denied the chance to experience companionship or love from a human.

It took weeks for our staff and volunteers to earn his trust. We knew the psychological damage caused by the neglect would take even longer to heal than the medical concerns he suffered from.

The team spent countless hours socializing him and helping him build his confidence. Eventually, he was made available for adoption, but we knew he needed a special kind of home.

Then, one day, his perfect family walked through the door. “We didn’t pick Koa, he picked us. We fell in love instantly. And now, we can’t imagine life without him,” said his adopter. We were so glad that someone saw the greatness in him that we did and wanted to spoil him with everything that was taken from him when he was young.

It’s been two years now and Koa is enjoying living in his forever home with his two and four-legged siblings. His adopter describes him as, “a loyal, goofy, overgrown love bug. He’s scared of the dark, so he has to sleep with a nightlight on and his favorite thing to do is lounge on the couch and watch cartoons. We call him our four-legged toddler. He brings so much happiness and love to everyone he meets.”

While he may still have physical scars from his trauma that will never leave, his emotional scars have been replaced by an outpouring of love and affection from a family that will treasure him for the rest of his days.

TRANSFORMATIONS

Transformations

Not only does the RHSPCA help animals go through astounding transformations, but the shelter itself has gone through a transformation of its own.

From our old building to the new, our goal has always been the same- to save lives. However, how we accomplish that goal has changed substantially over the last few years. Through all of the shifts that we have experienced: leadership, procedural and programmatic, the community’s support of our work has been the most impactful.

We have worked diligently to adopt industry best practices to better serve our community and its animals. Through generous monetary donations, we were also able to implement new lifesaving programs such as our Community Cat Program, as well as better our existing Barn Cat and Foster programs. We introduced these programs in our last newsletter and have been able to watch them grow and flourish since.

Through hard work and perseverance, our teams eagerly worked to save more lives than ever before. In fact, the RHSPCA was able to increase our live release rate dramatically. In 2016, it was only 47%; but in 2020, we were able to provide a positive outcome for 93% of the animals in our care!

FOSTER

Foster Increase

One program that has been essential to the shelter’s lifesaving efforts is our new and improved foster program to temporarily care for our pets in need.

Our shelter has enough kennels to individually house 70 canines and 99 felines. Some of the cat kennels are large enough to house three kittens. So, how do we manage to take in nearly 250 animals each month from May through September? We send them home (temporarily) to rest, relax, and recuperate.

Fostering has always been important to the Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA. However, becoming a foster wasn’t always as simple as it is now. The foster application process was arduous and there were unnecessary barriers that limited who could foster. Though well intentioned, the policies were too restrictive and garnered no greater benefit for the animals. We recognized the need for change and set about making our foster program more inclusive to help us fulfill our mission of saving lives.

With a change in leadership in 2019, came a change in policies as well. This shift allowed college students to become more involved in animal welfare, and eased the foster application process leading to an increase in participation. We screen potential fosters through dialogue versus a paper application and help those not yet ready learn what they can do to become a foster for us. Our Foster Coordinator and foster mentors are a constant resource that provides advice, assistance, and counseling to anyone interested in helping us save more lives through fostering.

The changes we implemented paved the way for the dramatic increase in foster homes over the last couple of years. Last year, 620 animals enjoyed time at home with one of our foster families. And already this year, we have had 480 animals have the luxury of doing the same. Our foster program has grown from 25 families in 2018 to now over 250 families that have opened their hearts and homes to provide temporary refuge for the homeless pets that come through our doors each year.

So why foster? As one foster put it, “Fostering allows me to experience the joy of saving animals from the comfort of my own home. And I get to experience it over and over again.”

CATS

Community Cats

Saving outdoor, feral cats has long been a hurdle for the RHSPCA not only due to internal policies, but also external regulations.

The shelter has always seen a high population of stray and surrendered cats come in. A majority of these felines are born, and have spent their lives, outdoors. Oftentimes, with well-meaning individuals providing food and shelter for the cats, the felines multiply prolifically and soon overwhelm the caretakers. The caretakers then inevitably bring some of their cats and kittens into the shelter.

Having lived their lives outdoors, these cats have a terrible time adjusting to confinement surrounded by unfamiliar sights and sounds. Since they are unsuitable for adoption into a home, historically these cats were euthanized. ​ rap-Neuter-Return is the only humane and T effective approach to dealing with community cats.

In this process, cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, ear tipped, and returned to their outdoor homes. However, as a shelter, local laws do not allow us to practice this.

That’s why, earlier this year, the RHSPCA piloted a Community Cat program to proactively work with caretakers to help manage their colony before the cats end up at the shelter. We offered assistance by giving food, advice, and vouchers to help get the animals altered at a local clinic. This ensured that the felines in question were properly cared for and returned to the environment that they felt comfortable and at-home in.

Over 300 felines benefited from this pilot program!

Our goal is to see this program evolve into a resource pillar for the community. This fall, we will launch our Community Cat Program. The program will aim to decrease feline overpopulation in our community through a dedicated helpline to educate individuals on best practices for colony management, feral kitten care, and provide much needed support and resources. Community cats are members of our community and live full, contented lives in their outdoor homes. It is our ambition to save many more in the years to come.

CATS

Barn Cats

For the feral cats that do come into our care, we find placement for them through our sustainable re-homing program, known as our Barn Cat Program.

Started in the summer of 2020, thanks to a lifesaving grant from Petco Love, the RHSPCA’s Barn Cat Program works to find new, safe, outdoor homes for the feral cats that are brought to the shelter. These cats have also lived most of their lives outdoors. They have retained their natural hunting instincts as well, which make them the perfect eco-friendly pest control option for individuals with rodent issues in their barns, sheds, stables, warehouses, etc.

We offer adopters counseling on our acclimation process that has been proven to successfully keep cats on the property. Helpful volunteers assist with building relocation crates that the barn cats will remain in for four weeks to become accustomed to the sights, smells, and sounds of their new surroundings. Adopting two barn cats often helps to ease the animals’ stress since these cats don’t care for the company of humans, but do appreciate the companionship of other felines.

The Barn Cat Program has helped save 100 feral cats that were brought to the shelter in only its first year of operation! The space in this program fills rather quickly, so we are always looking for new outdoor homes.

LIVE RELEASE RATE

Live Release Rate

Through our transformational programs, and community support, the RHSPCA has been able to dramatically increase the number of animals that we are able to save!

A shelter’s save rate, also referred to as Live Release Rate, is calculated by dividing the number of positive outcomes by the total number of outcomes (including euthanasia). A rate of 90% is the industry benchmark for a shelter to be considered ‘No Kill’. We are extremely pleased to share that the Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA has officially reached a 93% live release rate! And we are striving to increase this even more with each passing day.

Our organization accomplished this feat by adopting a lifesaving model in which each animal’s unique needs are assessed. Our Foster, Community Cat, and Barn Cat programs have played a tremendous role in increasing feline rates, which was where we previously struggled the most. Additionally, our Have a Heart Fund, a donor supported medical fund, has also played a key role in increasing our live release rate. Since inception, the Have a Heart Fund has helped the shelter reduce medical euthanasia from 634 animals in 2018, to 72 animals in 2020.

Even though we have accomplished this major feat of saving 90.1% of cats and 98.4% of dogs at the shelter, we will not be labeling the RHSPCA as ‘No Kill’.

“The No Kill language has been very divisive in our community. We’re not looking to put a label on the fact that we are working hard to save every animal that comes into our care,” said Huck Nawaz, Executive Director of the Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA. We hope to continue to earn more of the community’s trust and support as we have come so far and truly transformed the organization into a beacon of hope for animals in need. Leviathan

From scaredy cat, to king of the castle! Read about Leviathan’s joyous transformation.

Having only interacted with a few people since he was a kitten, Leviathan was not happy about being surrendered to the shelter at 3-years-old. Unfortunately, his owners did not have time for him anymore, so Leviathan sat frightened and trembling in his new kennel trying to make sense of his new surroundings.

Our staff attempted to socialize him, but he was terrified of strangers and would always retreat and hide. Upon his initial exam, he became so overwhelmed that he bit a staff member on the hand. This caused him to spend two weeks on bite quarantine, but we did not give up on trying to befriend Leviathan, or as we came to call him, Levi.

Every day, staff would make time to sit and talk with Levi to try to comfort him. He wasn’t much of a conversationalist, but the talking seemed to soothe him. After a while, he would settle down and slowly blink at you in reply. For two months, we kept this routine and finally gained enough of his trust to be able to pet him. This was an enormous win for both staff and Levi. For once Levi received affection, he realized that was what he had been longing for the whole time.

After that day, Levi would begin to greet the staff members when they came for their daily chats, knowing that the sight of them meant getting his fill of head scratches. His purring was like a melodious “thank you” for not forsaking him. It was wonderful to see the transformation that he had gone through from fearing us, to anticipating our visits.

When the time came to place Levi up for adoption, staff members were downhearted about losing their confidant, but hopeful that he would find a new loving companion.

And find one he did. One of our newer staff members had heard of Levi’s journey and decided to add him to their family. Now, Levi has a home of his own to relax in and a friend to talk with every day for the rest of his life.

“My time with him has been just great! He’s really playful and sweet. I’ve even trained him to walk on a leash,” says his adopter.

When the time came for Levi to leave the shelter, we wished him farewell and requested ongoing updates.

Even the employee that he had bitten was happy for him.

Success stories like these reinforce the importance of the work that we do each day to care for the scared, sick, traumatized animals that we see. And when one of them finds their forever home, it makes it all the more rewarding.
