Success Stories!

Cats and Humans Find Their Inner Yogi

Thank you to everyone who participated and donated a bag of cat food in order to help our feline friends. We greatly appreciate everyone making this event so fun! A special thank you to Veronica Whalen Jones for donating her time as our yoga instructor. Meowmaste!

My Friend Calls It a Foster Fail, We Think It Was Just Meant To Be Written by Raider’s Mom Raider is a four year old hound who came to the shelter in July ‘17. As part of our protocol he was tested for heartworms and he came back positive. Heartworm treatments can be expensive and pose a serious health threat if untreated. Raider was placed into foster in October ‘17 to start undergoing his treatments at North Fork Veterinary Hospital and be in a better environment for recovery. We are very thankful for fosters who help animals like Raider, veterinarians who help treat these orphaned pets and individuals who donate to our NOVA fund that covers these types of medical expenses.

From day one at our house, Raider wanted to make friends with everyone and everything. He was gentle with our toddler and two indoor cats, and was very curious about his surroundings… he even tried to make friends with his reflection in the mirror! Raider was so happy to make new friends, and Hammy and Laura (our resident dogs) were very excited to have someone new in the pack. wwIt only took Raider a few days after meeting Hammy and Laura to become comfortable in his new home, and it only took a few days after that for him to protest going into his crate. One day when I was trying to coax Raider into his crate, Hammy went in first and blocked his way as if to say “Don’t put Raider in there!” He now eats, sleeps, goes for walks and does everything with Hammy and Laura. wwOur daughter likes to hug and kiss all the dogs, and Raider is especially patient with her. They were adorable on the evening of his last shot. My daughter was very happy to see that Raider was home from the doctor, and hugged and kissed him “to make sure he’s better.” He knows how to open the baby gate and let himself into her room, and doesn’t seem to mind when she includes him as a prop in her play time. wwDuring our short time as a foster family for Raider, we grew to love him very dearly. As the days went by it got harder for me to remember that we were only fostering Raider, and when a lady approached me and said she was interested in adopting him I had to swallow the lump in my throat. It occurred to me in that instant that I just couldn’t imagine sending him home with someone else…it’s like he was always meant to be here with us. So for Christmas this year our home officially included one more member of the pack. We adopted Raider on December 22, 2017!
