Course Overview

Our BSc (Hons) Applied Sport and Exercise Science degree gives you the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to understand, measure, and improve human performance. You’ll explore how the body responds to exercise, how to support athletes to reach their potential, and how to use science to promote health and wellbeing across all levels of sport and physical activity.

Year 1

Building the Foundations

Develop a strong understanding of the key scientific principles that underpin sport and exercise performance. You’ll learn through practical sessions, lab work, and interactive lectures designed to bring theory to life.

In year 1 you will cover:

• An Introduction to anatomy, physiology and biomechanics

• Fundamentals of sport and exercise behaviour

• Research and academic skills

• Professional practice in sport and exercise science

Year 2

Applying the Science

Begin to apply scientific knowledge to real-world contexts. Explore how to assess, monitor, and enhance performance using lab-based and fieldbased testing.

In year 2 you will cover:

• Theory and practice of health and performance testing

• Human movement and skill acquisition

• Applied sport and exercise psychology

• An introduction to public health

• An introduction to research methods

Year 3

Expanding Expertise and Experience

Bring your skills together through a professional placement, gaining valuable industry experience, and start to design and carry out your own research.

In year 3 you will cover:

• Sport and exercise for health and wellbeing

• Applied research methods and statistics

• Professional practice placement

• Strength and conditioning

Year 4

Specialisation and Research

Focus on an area that interests you most, whether that’s elite performance, exercise for health, or applied sport science practice. You’ll also complete an independent research project, showcasing your expertise and readiness for your next step.

In year 4 you will cover:

• Independent research project

• Contemporary issues in sport and exercise science

• Applied sport performance

• Exercise prescription and intervention design

Across all four years, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art laboratories, motion analysis suites, and strength and conditioning facilities.
