WELCOME We asked our students to tell us why they love their school and they told us ‘There’s more to life at RGS!’ What a wonderful way to encapsulate the breadth of amazing endeavour and achievement that takes place at our school.

As these pages show – in what can only be a small glimpse of what happens in a busy school year – our students, our parents, our Old Novocastrians, our staff, our local school partners, indeed every member of the RGS family, gets to experience a breadth of opportunity like nowhere else in the city.

YEAR 3 T E C H N O LO GY TO M In February, both Year 3 and Year 6 took part in DT workshops with Technology Tom. Year 3 spent the morning designing and making their own bridges.

The children considered how certain shapes and forces can affect the strength of a structure. Year 6 spent the afternoon designing and firing their own rockets and pupils took part in various challenges including target accuracy, delivering a rescue message and distance recording.

In June, the annual Year 3 expedition to Kirknewton took place. The two groups had the opportunity to explore Maelmin, find out all about life in Ancient Briton and visit a wooden henge monument. They then travelled to Kirknewton, where they had the opportunity to learn all about the local church, discover more about the natural environment and complete some lovely artwork using elements from their surroundings to create colourful patterns. A very popular activity was building a shelter and using the handheld radios. It was quite a challenge to communicate and work as a team to ensure that the shelter was robust. In the evening, students completed a photo search activity and then had hot chocolate around the camp fire. The next day they went up in the hills to find the remains of a hillfort and discover what it may have been like to live there. The weather was kind and the children were all very enthusiastic about the activities.

G R E AT N O RT H MUSEUM Year 3 had a yabba dabba doo time at the Great North Museum learning about the Stone Age! The students attended an interesting workshop where they saw artefacts and then explored the gallery.

YEAR 4

V I S I T TO T H E H O U S E O F O B J EC T S In June, Year 4 visited the House of Objects as part of their Technology Day.

PAT T E R DA L E RESIDENTIAL TRIP Year 4 students enjoyed a great trip to Patterdale in March where they got to experience a variety of activities including, archery, low ropes courses, canoeing, hiking, a night time scavenger hunt and bush craft.

Pupils were given the challenge to invent something new from something old. The children’s creativity was truly magnificent and we were amazed by their end results!

Here’s what some students had to say about the trip.

“Patterdale was so much fun! We did lots of activities which were really good like: archery and low ropes; canoeing; bushcraft and habitats; the night time scavenger hunt and the Griffin walk.”

N AT U R E A RT DAY Year 4 were joined by an artist from the BALTIC who explored positive and negative space with them to create their very own tree scene. In the classrooms, the children built their own plastic sealife sculptures and drew detailed nature observations. They also started to paint a large wall mural in the playground which will be a long term project lots of pupils can get involved with.

YEAR 5 V I C TO R I A N DAY

S C I E N C E DAY

The whole of Year 5 went back to 1889 and thought about what it was like to be a pupil in a Victorian school, as part of our work on the history of the RGS.

In February, Year 5 students enjoyed a fun day exploring and experimenting a variety of aspects of science.

The whole year group were taught in Fenwick Hall, as we know classes in those days could have up to 100 children in them! They practised all of the important skills of them time, such as handwriting with dip pens, sewing for the girls and technical drawing for the boys. They also spent some time chanting times tables and began to think about using pounds, shillings and pence.

The teachers were all very strict and some of the students tried some of the punishments from the time, such as the dunce’s hat and the ‘spot of shame’, but luckily, nobody needed the cane!

B U D D I N G A RT I STS V I S I T T H E I R D RAW I N G S AT T H E T H O U G H T F O U N DAT I O N Year 6 visited an art gallery to look at drawings by North East school children, including some by RGS budding artists. Drawings from several of our talented students were featured in an exhibition depicting some of the world’s most endangered species The result of a collaboration between artist, Jane Lee McCracken, and several North East schools, ‘Where did all the animals go?’ showcased the Biro drawings of school children from across the region, who had previously participated in workshops with Jane.

The Edinburgh-born artist, who constructs intricate multi-layered Biro drawings, sculptures, installations and designs products, visited our Junior School several times during the year to work with our budding-artists.

Over the course of the workshops, students used Jane’s working method of creating drawings in Biro with no pencil guidelines, which were inspired by photographs taken by some of the world’s best wildlife photographers Euan Wayman, was one of the children whose drawing was hung in the gallery and it was also used on the main poster advertising the exhibition.

YEAR 6 LONDON TRIP Just before the summer half term, Year 6 went to London, to see an amazing show, visit The Making of Harry Potter, do some sightseeing and have a lot of fun!

They left on Thursday morning and when they got to London in the afternoon, they walked from Buckingham Palace to Trafalgar Square, seeing Big Ben and other amazing sights in between.

After all that walking, they stopped at Garfunkel’s Diner where they had dinner – then got back on the bus to go to see Wicked! The show was spectacular, the scenery and costumes immaculate, and the story kept everyone on the edge of their seats, waiting to find out what happens next.

The next morning, everyone woke up bright and early to go and see The Making of Harry Potter. It was so interesting there, they had everything that you wanted to see and do and so much more, for example: a butterbeer stall and Privet Drive, where you could walk in and see the rooms!

Students agreed it was one of the best school trips they had ever been on and everyone really enjoyed themselves!

He said: “My inspiration to draw a giant panda over all of the other animals was the fact it’s one of the worlds most endangered species and they’re very funny.

“When I found out that my picture had been selected I was thrilled. It was a great experience and I look forward to drawing more.”

A RT TICE

T R I P TO L O N D O N

This year, our students had the wonderful opportunity to get involved with the This Is Creative Enterprise (TICE) programme, which offers young people in Tyneside the chance to work with top designers and industry professionals who have expertise in fashion, music, creative writing, and games design and animation.

A group of Year 10 budding artists enjoyed a fantastic day in London in June.

A group of students from Years 9, 10 and Lower Sixth, went to Northumbria University to work on three fashion-focused projects which addressed topical issues in today’s fashion industry including sustainability, individuality and brand collaboration.

Drenched in sunlight, Trafalgar Square was the perfect venue for a spot of lunch before a walk down Whitehall to Westminster.

The four day programme involved the students directing their own photo shoots, creating online marketing campaigns, producing a front cover for a magazine, and learning industry orientated skills including embroidery. This gave them a taste of what being a part of the fashion industry is like and also provided them with invaluable practical experience.

All the students had a fantastic time and thrived off the challenge of learning to use state of the art photography equipment and the opportunity to receive feedback from industry professionals.

Furthermore, they enjoyed forging friendships with peers from other schools and collaborating with them to create professional-looking results.

On arrival into the capital, students walked to Britannia Street Gagosian Gallery to bear witness to Michael Craig Martins minimal colour and line everyday object sculptures.

The group then divided across the National Gallery, Hauser and Wirth, PACE gallery and Stephen Friedman.

Upon arriving at Tate Modern, the students were free to explore the themed exhibition across both buildings before a performative gathering on the ramp of the turbine hall.

N E W A RT CENTRE This year saw the fruition of our incredible new art studios, the vision of RGS Head of Art Graham Mason (Old Novo 89-96) and his team of exceptionally talented art teachers.

It’s not very often you get to build an Art Department and however much you plan, we knew it had to be able to change because the world changes. The students change, the way they live their lives and the way they want to learn changes; the staff – how they want to teach and what they want to teach – so it had to be adaptable and that is what we believe we’ve achieved.

The centrepiece of the art department’s new home is the office and original furniture – a hub and items that bring the patina of past learners to the exciting experiences of new learners.

The advantages of being able to have a purpose-built art college are extraordinary, never mind one of this size.

It has already given us more profile and will make us more visible. It truly is an Art Department for the 21st century.

Members of the Year 9 horticultural club were declared competition winners at The Green Plan It RHS Celebration day.

On Tuesday 4th of December 2018, members of our Year 8 and 9 horticultural club took part in The Green Plan It RHS Celebration Day, held at the Winter Gardens in Sunderland.

In order to qualify, the students had to complete a 10-week project in which they designed a green space. This involved site visits, research into appropriate plants and building a model of the proposed garden.

Students from each year group came up with separate gardens, one based in Brandling Park and the other within the school grounds. Throughout the programme, support was offered by two mentors from the industry, Jennie Lambert, Public Engagement and Learning Manager with Sunderland Museums & Heritage Service and Fiona Greenwood, who runs the plant nursery Perennial Favourites at Blyth. The Celebration Day was the grand finale for the projects, during which students presented their gardens to a team of judges, and competed against other schools in the region.

Our Year 9 students enjoyed great success after being declared overall winners! This was in part thanks to their professional and informed presentation. Supervisor of the Project, Dr Murgatroyd, was bowled over by the enthusiasm of the students. Thanks must go to her, Miss Stickings and Dr Campbell for their assistance with the project. The DT department also provided invaluable support and access to their facilities.

O LY M P I A D S U C C E S S Outside of the curriculum, we had students compete in the Royal Society of Biology Challenge (for Year 9 and 10), Intermediate Olympiad (L6) and Senior Olympiad (L6 and U6). As usual, all our students did the school proud with many of them performing to a really high level in all three competitions.

C H E M I ST RY

C A M B R I D G E C H E M I S T RY CHALLENGE An impressive 25 students from Lower Sixth participated in a 90 minute exam, testing their ability to apply their chemistry knowledge to questions that go beyond the A Level specification and encourages them to think about science in the way they would at University. Three students, Justin Cronk, Thomas Rees and Hector Hawkins, were awarded a Gold award placing them in the top 9% of the country. A further eight students were awarded a Silver and 10 a Copper award.

SU CC ESS AT T H E SA LT ER S FEST IVAL O F C HEMIST RY FOR Y E AR 8 Four of our Year 8 students won first prize at Salters Festival of Chemistry. Duncan Seller, Shreya Gellia, Gina Elliot and Henry Young all took part in the competition, held at Newcastle University, and performed well enough to earn first place. The festival included a murder mystery style competition, which involved the use of chromatography and test tube reactions on a white solid to identify the culprit. The judges were particularly impressed with their great teamwork, which helped give them the edge over other teams.

R S C TO P O F THE BENCH Laura Wisse (Year 10), Daniel Bansal (Year 10), James Taylor (Year 11) and Rosa Whittingham (L6) all performed superbly at the RSC Top of The Bench competition, winning the Regional Round of the competition and coming in the top half of all schools at the National Finals. The competition involved chemistry quizzes, practical experiments, presentations and made for both an enjoyable and informative experience.

L OW E R S I X T H N E WC A ST L E UNIVERSITY C H E M I ST RY P R O J E C T C O L L A B O RAT I O N As part of the complementary studies programme in Lower Sixth, Sam Edwards, Trudie McCarthy, Abbie Peyton and Grace Varley undertook a yearlong project in the chemistry labs at Newcastle University. Over the course of the project, they commissioned and calibrated Gas Chromatography machines for use with A Level practicals which can lead to a Gold CREST award upon submission of their project.

CLASSICS AND A N C I E N T H I S TO RY Y 9 H A D R I A N ’ S WA L L TRIP Around 40 Year 9 Ancient History students were transported back in time with a visit to Hadrian’s Wall.

Y E A R 4 O U T R E AC H E V E N T Around 40 students from six local primary schools, plus the RGS Junior School, joined the department for an exciting morning of classical learning.

Four members of the Sixth Form helped out, as students participated in three different activities which included a mixture of language learning, ancient history art and classic tales.

Activity 1 Latin derivations – numbers / body parts – students matched English to Latin, using English derivations to help.

Activity 2 Greek vase – students studied various different designs, then designed/ decorated their own vases using a template.

Activity 3 Aesop’s fables – each group studied a different fable, discussed the moral; after splitting into 2/3 smaller groups then students devised their own version to perform later to the rest of the group.

Students also enjoyed lunch and each school was given an illustrated copy of ‘Aesop’s Fables’ for their school library.

We received wonderful feedback from the schools who attended, saying how much the students had enjoyed their experience.

Joined by some Sixth Form Classicists and members of the RGS Classics department, students visited Vindolanda where they were given an archaeological talk on site and also witnessed archaeology in action, as a group of volunteers were excavating a section of the site. Students were then allowed to explore the site as a whole before heading into the museum to complete a scavenger hunt, as well as choosing one specific artefact to focus on.

After a picnic lunch, the group headed to Housesteads Fort and had an ice cream before going for a short walk along the path of the wall to a nearby milecastle.

OX B R I D G E S U C C E S S FOR CLASSICS ST U D E N T S We were delighted to learn that four of our Upper Sixth students received offers to study a Classical subject at Oxford.

Rachel Rees was accepted to read Classics and Ambika Seghal, Matthew Hudson and Gus Coningham were all offered places to read Classical Archaeology and Ancient History (CAAH).

COMPUTER SCIENCE

This year was a year of growth for the fledgling department, but it was not without its successes.

S PAC E F I S H H E A D TO N AT I O N A L S Our Year 8 Robotics Team, Space Fish, made it to the national final in this years’ First Lego League, after winning their regional heat. With a focus on a project around reducing space waste and a robotics assault course to navigate, the team performed fantastically against schools from around the United Kingdom at the event held in Bristol.

B E B RA S C O M P U T I N G C H A L L E N G E In November, Computer Science students participated in the Bebras Computing Challenge – a worldwide computational thinking competition. We had a great showing, with a number of students being invited to participate in the Oxford computing challenge. One of our Year 9 students, Thiara De Alwis, even gained the highest score in the region, with 162 points.

ENGINEERING, DESIGN AND T E C H N O L O GY T E A M Q UA R K E N G I N E E R S TO P C L A S S P E R F O R M A N C E AT N AT I O N A L S This year, the department entered two teams into 4x4, an international competition run by Jaguar Land Rover.

Both teams made it to the national finals, with Team Quark coming second place in the competition, having achieved first place in the North East. The team also achieved the best verbal presentation in both the NorthEast and also in the UK! All while being the youngest team in the competition.

“I feel as a team, collectively we have vastly improved in not only our EDT skills but also with time management, teamwork and communication – all of which are vital life skills. Winning the competition inspired us to excel at our EDT GCSE.

ENGLISH J A M I L A GAV I N V I S I TS T H E RG S February saw Mr Gilbert’s magnificent production of Coram Boy in the Miller Theatre: for the first time, there was a special matinee for all of Year 8 (and some of Year 7), many of whom were encountering either the novel, or its play adaptation, in the classroom.

Characteristic of the partnership between the English Department and our superb librarians: we achieved the coup of having its author, Jamila Gavin, into school to talk to those year groups in January.

Jamila is a very youthful 78! Articulate, gracious: her visit was an absolute joy. She spoke of the influence of her background (‘there’s not necessarily one straight trajectory in your life’) and of the racism in a ‘mono-cultured’ 1970s Britain.

SIXTH FORM READING GROUP T R I P TO H O LY I S L A N D The Sixth Form Reading Group started in January 1996 and has been in continuous existence for 23 years.

The formula is quite a simple one: the group starts in January of the Lower Sixth and runs for three terms until December of the Upper Sixth (meeting weekly after school from 4.10-5.30pm).

Since 2000, the group has rounded-off the year with a reading weekend on Holy Island.

Over the two days, students enjoy 4 x 2½ hour reading sessions, combined with a 3½ hour walk. The Tennysoneffect (‘the living soul was flashed on mine’) and Holy Island combine to have a magic like no other.

The trip this January was as good as they have ever had, with David Hare’s Racing Demon, David Lodge’s Nice Work and Caryl Churchill’s Drunk Enough to Say I Love You being the group’s primary focus.

WA R H O R S E AT SUNDERLAND EMPIRE The English Department seeks to avail itself of the best theatrical opportunities beyond the classroom, both locally and nationally. It has now three times, been in the happy place of taking all of Year 7 to the National Theatre’s production of Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse—twice in Sunderland, once in Bradford. In its most recent visit to Sunderland, the production only seems to increase in its theatrical power. As one of our Year 7 reviewers expressed: “The puppetry is so stunning that quite often the fact that the horses are being controlled by people is a complete fantasy: the horses are alive in the audience’s minds.” And as he concludes: “War Horse brings animals and humans together, it shows love, and compassion, and even through the awful, awful, awful war, there is still glimmer of hope.” It is why live theatre matters. And it needs saying how we receive a tremendous benefit from an imaginative Bursar’s Department, that is willing to commit to the purchase of tickets, 15 months before we see it. One of the things that makes us special.

FIELD TRIPS This Year, the department provided its usual wide range of engaging Field trips. Year 7 and Upper Sixth visited the Lake District where they studied glaciation, while Year 8 looked at the biogeography around Blanchland. A group of Year 9 students made the annual trip to Ingleborough, visiting the impressive Limestone scenery there and spending time in the fabulous Ingleborough Cave. Finally, the Sixth Form made several informative visits to the Coquet River to analyse the hydrology from source to mouth and to examine damage prevention measures along the Northumberland Coast and in the City of York.

GEOGRAPHY

All the trips proved to be enjoyable and allowed the students to see physical geography in action, which helped develop their understanding of geographical processes.

USA TRIP Last Summer saw the West Coast USA trip running, during which students visited key Geographical sites in Arizona, Nevada and California. The trip was a huge success, full of a plethora of highlights including visiting The Valley of Fire and Death Valley, the majesty of The Grand Canyon and The Hoover Dam. The trip also included an enjoyable visit to Las Vegas.

GUEST SPEAKERS This year, the History department brought in two wonderful speakers for the students. Laura O’Brien came in from Northumbria University and gave an engaging speech on the 1848 revolution which was enjoyed by all.

Daniel Siemens visited from Newcastle University and gave an informative and interesting talk on Horst Wessel and Nazi myth making.

Year 7 and 8 Students from Junior Alfred Yeadon HistSoc held a Heraldry Competition.

Students were asked to dig into local, Kate Sneddon and hopefully, family history, to give them more of an insight what this Emma Ashman means and also develop their research skills. M AT H S T R I U M P H AT T E A M M AT H S C H A L L E N G E The Senior Maths Team of Steve Jiang, Maartje Wisse (U6), Hector Hawkins (L6) and Alex Adamson (Year 11) finished a creditable second place in the Regional Team Maths Challenge.

Teams compete against each other in four rounds.

Group Round Teams work to solve ten questions of varying type and difficulty in the time allowed. Each team must decide their own strategy: whether to work in pairs, individually or as a team.

Crossnumber Similar to a crossword but with numerical answers. Teams worked in pairs; one pair had the across clues and the other pair had the down clues. The pairs worked independently to complete the grid using logic and deduction.

The Team Maths Challenge is a competition giving students, working in teams of four, the opportunity to tackle a variety of engaging mathematical activities while developing teamwork and communication skills.

Shuttle Teams competed against the clock to correctly answer a series of four questions. Each team was divided into Pair A (given Questions 1 and 3) and Pair B (given Questions 2 and 4). Question 1 could be solved independently of the others, but the answer to each subsequent question was dependent on the answer to the previous one.

Relay Teams split off into pairs, with pairs taking it in turns to solve problems. This round involved lots of movement as well as mathematics: a race against the clock with lots of lively activity and excitement.

N AT I O N A L M AT H S CHALLENGE SUCCESSES Steve and Maartje achieved a Merit in the prestigious Senior Maths Challenge – placing them among the best young mathematicians in the country.

The Senior Mathematical Challenge is a 90-minute, multiple-choice competition aimed at students across the UK. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

Alex Adamson was the top scorer in the Intermediate Maths Challenge, a 60-minute, multiple-choice competition aimed at students across the UK, qualifying for the MacLaurin Olympiad Paper.

At the lower end of the school, Weiming Xu (Year 8), was the top scorer in the Junior Maths Challenge and the only student to qualify for the Junior Olympiad. This two-hour competition saw 1,200 qualifying students from around the UK attempting to answer 16 problems, 10 in Section A and six in Section B. Only answers were required to the problems in Section A whereas full written solutions were required for problems in Section B.

MODERN L A N G UAG E S B E AT T H E RAT RAC E In December, Year 9 students attended Newcastle University’s Beat the Rat Race, an event which highlights the wide variety of careers open to those with a working knowledge of another language.

They had the opportunity to meet with high-flying professionals who use languages in their work, including engineers, interpreters and GCHQ agents. Students participated in designing a competition poster to promote language learning, and tried their hand at Russkiy! Klassno!

Y E A R 9 A N D 1 0 E X P LO R E SOUTH WEST GERMANY 30 of our Year 9 and 10 students studying German travelled to Stuttgart to help develop their language skills and experience the area’s rich cultural and engineering connections. One of the highlights of the trip was the Sinsheim Technology Museum, which has more than 3,000 exciting exhibits, including a full-size Concorde to board and inspect. The students also loved the chocolate-making workshop at the Ritter Sport factory and had an interesting visit to the Porsche Museum where they saw racing car designs. Thanks to Mrs Towns who designed the trip, along with Mr Metcalf and Mrs Diaz-Crossley who accompanied the students.

S I X T H F O R M WO R K EXPERIENCE IN VA L E N C I A Sixth Form Spanish Students Miles Gittins, James Telfer and Alina Willis enjoyed a post-16 work meetslanguage programme held in Valencia.

This valuable experience gave the students the chance to experience life in Spain, practice their language skills and get a taste of what working abroad would be like.

TYNESIDE CINEMA WO R K S H O P This year, our Sixth Form and Year 10 linguists took part in some interactive workshops, organised by Tyneside cinema, as part of their cross-curricular language film studies. Students were involved in group activities that were designed to develop their language skills and enable them to explore the GCSE themes of home, environment and friendship. As part of the workshop, the students watched the internationally acclaimed Almodóvar film Todo sobre mi madre (All about my mother), and the feel-good French Intouchables (The Untouchables), while the Year 10s had a screening of El Olivo. The the day helped the students in their linguistic studies, proving to be both enjoyable and beneficial.

S T U D E N TS P E R F O R M AT WO R L D FA M O U S CARNEGIE HALL Three of our talented musicians formed part of the 120 strong Tees Valley Youth Orchestra (TVYO) which stunned spectators with a performance at the world famous Carnegie Hall, receiving three standing ovations in recognition of their wonderful playing.

In celebration of 50 years of TVYO, Hannah Glanville (U6), Harry Baldwin (L6) and Shreya Gellia (Year 9) travelled to New York with the ensemble over the summer, to play in front of an audience of 1,000 at one of the most prestigious venues in the world for both classical music and popular music.

H A R R O GAT E M U S I C F E ST I VA L In March, our Blue Blazer Choir won Best Choir (Under 13 category) at the Harrogate Competitive Festival for Music, Speech and Drama. The festival is committed to providing a platform for aspiring musicians and drama students to practice public performance in a competitive environment and attracts groups and individuals from across the country.

Highly acclaimed adjudicator, Christina Thomson, praised the group for their performance, awarding them both the White Rose trophy and Distinction certificates.

ABRSM Exam Results in April, several of our talented students took their ABRSM music exams and were each awarded with Distinctions. A Distinction is the highest level of pass available and we are all very proud of their superb achievements!

L E AV E R S ’ C O N C E RT This year’s Headmaster’s Invitation Concert saw the Miller Theatre packed to the rafters as our talented Upper Sixth musicians took to the stage for one final time.

Parents, students, staff, Old Novocastrians and friends of the RGS delighted throughout the evening as our gifted performers treated them to an array of recitals, which took them on a musical journey through the ages.

The audience was then introduced to the contemporary clarinet music of British composer, Gerald Finzi, before enjoying performances of pop and traditional folk music, which concluded the successful spectacle.

The concert was a fitting farewell for our talented Upper Sixth musicians, and we wish them every success as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.

SENIOR HOUSE MUSIC COMPETITION On Friday 19th October 2018, the Miller Theatre was filled with a large audience of parents, staff and supporters for the annual Senior House Music Competition. This was an evening of great entertainment with each House providing two soloists, an instrumental ensemble, a Rock Band and their House Choir. The overall standard of performances has been constantly improving from year to year and our House Captains did a fabulous job in raising the bar even higher this year.

Mr Fern and Mr Bird, our adjudicators, complimented the students on the quality and variety of the programme and awarded the following prizes: The winner of the Intermediate Solo category was Wendy Deng (Chinese Flute, Year 9) and the Senior Solo category, Alex Adamson (Piano, Year 11 – who was also awarded the prize of RGS Musician of the Year). Stowell’s ensemble and Collingwood’s Rock Band won their respective categories.

AU T U M N R E C I TA L Audience attendance at our termly Chamber Concerts has been rising steadily over the last few years. These very pleasant musical evenings feature short solo performances from the best of both our younger and more experienced musicians. Eighteen soloists, on six different instruments, took part in this year’s Autumn Recital held on Wednesday 14th November in the Recital Room. Works ranging from Tielman Susato to Hugo Wolf took the appreciative audience on a reflective musical journey throughout the centuries.

Stowell’s choir won the House Choir category with their rendition of Elton John’s The Stars Look Down. Finally, to top off the evening, after a superb performance by Michael Watt & The Flat 5 Jazz Band (Dance the Night Away) the adjudicators announced that the overall winner of the Inter House Music Trophy was Collingwood House, with Stowell as runners-up.

For the assembled audience, the evening delivered on every aspect of a competitive music event: tension, elation, delight, fantastic support throughout and a high quality of music performances across each category. The challenge is now to raise the bar for next year’s event!

SENIOR CAROL S E RV I C E A large congregation of students, friends and their families gathered in St George’s Church, Jesmond to join us in our annual Senior School Christmas Carol Service.

The Service of Nine Lessons and Carols included seasonal readings given by members of the school community, congregational carols and musical performances from our instrumental ensembles and four Choirs. Of particular note were the Brass Quintet’s performance of Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring by J.S. Bach and the Symphony Orchestra’s Finale from Symphony No.45 by J. Haydn.

All our choirs sang superbly; deserving special mention are the Junior Chamber Choir’s The Angels’ Carol by J. Rutter and the Blue Blazer Choir’s performance of Hodie Christus Natus Est by C. Cary Miller. The highlight of the night though, was perhaps the combined performance of a six-part gospel arrangement of Carol of the Bells sung by our three Senior Choirs.

Spontaneous applause at the end of the Carol Service demonstrated the congregation’s appreciation towards all the readers, performers and their music.

Our thanks to Mr Fazlic and Miss Bolt for the superb music, Mrs Clappison for accompanying the Junior Chamber Choir, Mr Bird who organized the readings and our guest organist Mr Ian Roberts who accompanied both congregation and choirs throughout.

On the 25th January 2019, the Miller Theatre came alive to the sound of Jazz and Blues. James Critchley and Charlotte Dargan hosted the evening and a wide range of RGS talent was on show. Homage was paid to some of the greatest Jazz performers from around the globe. This ranged from the RGS Big Band, which performed several pieces, including In the Midnight Hour, If I Didn’t Have You, Lullaby of Broadway and Pennsylvania 6-5000, to our smaller ensembles like ‘The Flat 5’ Jazz Band, which gave us an eclectic set full of jazz classics including Oye Como Va and Now’s The Time, and the Brass Quintet and Blue Note Wind Band.

Thirty-two singers from Year 7 to Year 10 and four members of staff took part in our Senior Choir tour to Amsterdam in February 2019.

It was wonderful to see students from across the school perform solos and arrange their own pieces, such as the Year 11 Vocal Quartet performing their own arrangement of Moon River. As well as showcasing the musical talent within the senior school, Jazzamatazz was also an opportunity to see the level of commitment to the performing arts across RGS, as was evident in the student led dance to Aretha Franklin’s R.E.S.P.E.C.T led by Danisha Kohli.

We thank Miss Bolt for organising the evening and preparing her three ensembles, as well as Mr Fazlic, Mrs Clappison, Mr Hignett and Mr Goldberg for their contribution to running the vocal or instrumental ensembles and helping with the bands.

We look forward to this year’s varied Jazz Concert offering in January 2020.

Following a walk through the busy streets of Amsterdam to the Anne Frank House Museum, students listened to an audio guide, retelling the story of Anne Frank and her family. This was a very poignant visit and everyone left the Museum in reflective mood.

The next day students departed by coach to Amersfoort, a small town one hour’s drive southeast of Amsterdam, for their first concert.

At the absolutely stunning St Francis Xaverious Church, students were warmly welcomed by the hosts. The acoustic was amazing and our choirs and soloist sounded incredible. The audience gave them a standing ovation at the end of the concert. On the return journey, the driver took the scenic route through some glorious countryside and the city of Utrecht.

In the evening, Dr Bone and Ms Watterson organized a quiz, which all the students thoroughly enjoyed.

The following morning, the group travelled on foot to the English Reformed Church, where they gave their second concert. Laura Wisse (Year 9), introduced the choir in Dutch, to the audience’s delight. The Blue Blazer Choir performed a diverse repertoire of two and three part songs, including: Pick Yourself Up, It Don’t Mean a Thing, Consider Yourself, I’ll be There, Chattanooga Choo Choo. The Senior Choir sang Abendlied by F. Mendelssohn, Let the Song Begin by D. Moore, In Paradisum by Faure, Propter Magnam Gloria from Vivaldi’s Gloria.

The concert was closed with Oye La Musica, which was performed by the combined Choirs and received a further standing ovation. Special mention must go to our five soloists on the tour: vocal soloists Bede Doe (Year 8), Grace Stobart and Amelia Lewis (Year 9), flute soloist Gautam Chauhan (Year 10) and Amy Zheng (Year 8) on piano, who captivated the audiences with their enchanting performances at both concerts.

After the concert, the musicians walked to the north of the city, close to the main railway station where they enjoyed a canal cruise, in spite of the drizzle. After dinner at the hostel, they took a stroll to a nearby cinema to watch “Alita Battle Angel” which was very entertaining.

The students were buzzing with excitement after both successful concerts.

On the final day, students walked to the Van Gogh Museum, enjoyed viewing the paintings and drawings of one of the world’s great Post-Impressionists and walked back to the hostel where Mr Fazlic, to everyone’s surprise, presented an eclectic mix of prizes for various categories of accomplishment throughout the tour.

This was a fantastic choir tour with superb student performances and interesting visits to many of Amsterdam’s landmarks.

We are grateful to Mr Fazlic for organizing the trip and preparing the choirs so well, Miss Bolt for her terrific piano accompanying and Dr Bone and Ms Watterson for looking after their charges and being such great company. We were so proud of all the students, not only for their singing, but for how they conducted themselves and represented us: true Ambassadors for our School, City and the Country.

B AT T L E O F THE BANDS The RGS Battle of the Bands Competition was another great success. This was the 6th year of the competition, which has gone from strength to strength. We had competitors from Heaton Manor, Newcastle High School for Girls, Dame Allen’s, Longbenton Community College, Churchill Community College, Kings Meadow School, Whickham School, Duchess’s Community High School and, of course, the RGS! The Judges – Chris Johnson, John Myers and Mark Robinson – deliberated long and hard as the standard was extremely high. The bands performed “anonymously” to remove any of the judges’ potential bias, but in the end the winner was announced as Psych from Duchess’s Community High School in Alnwick, with “Free Drinks at the Bar” from Whickham School and “The Flame” from Longbenton Community College taking second and third place respectively.

SENIOR SPRING C O N C E RT Our RGS Senior Spring Concert brought together more than one hundred and twenty students in eight Senior ensembles. The concert opened with the Percussion Ensemble, whose performance of Mambo Schmambo showed tight and energetic rhythmic playing. This year’s “rookies” were the Flute Ensemble, led by Ms Davie.

They showed that even a very challenging repertoire (Die Moldau by B. Smetana and Overture to the Marriage of Figaro by W. A. Mozart) can be executed superbly at an inaugural performance. The Brass ensemble followed with their confident playing of Polka by J. Strauss and Farnaby’s The Old Spagnoletta. Next up was the Intermediate Guitar Ensemble with their excellent renditions of La Malagena, Planxty Irvin and La Filado. The Blue Blazer Choir sang three choral arrangements superbly in preparation for their participation in the Harrogate Music Festival, which took place a week after this concert. Sinfonia Orchestra, led

by Mrs Jasinski, produced a well-balanced sound as they adeptly played Warrior’s Song by R. Wedderburn and trad.

Polka, arranged by S. Foxley. After a rapid changeover, the Blue Note Wind Band, led by Miss Bolt, took to the stage with Handclap and Rolling in the Deep. Our Symphony Orchestra, led by Mr Fazlic, closed the evening with their ‘Fast and Furious’ rendition of Mambo from Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances. This concert showed that our ensemble music is going from strength to strength.

C H O RA L A N D O R C H E ST RA L C O N C E RT – M A R C H 2 0 1 9 This year’s Choral and Orchestral took place at the beautiful Jesmond United Reformed Church. The concert showcased two of the RGS’s finest Orchestras and the Senior and Community Choirs.

The programme began with the Concert Band, who under the direction of Miss Bolt, performed “Jump in the Line” and “Serenade for Wind Band” by D. Bourgeois. The second piece, full of mischief and fun, was written in an interesting meter: 11/8 and required supreme rhythmic precision. The Concert Band pulled this off, playing tightly together, while maintaining a lightness of touch throughout. Superb!

Next was the Symphony Orchestra who performed four pieces, among which was Allegretto Op.12. No.3 and Bolero

by M. Moszkowski. Their polished performance was executed with energy and some delicate dynamic ranges.

Credit to Mr Fazlic and Mrs Jasinski (our string coach) for improving the orchestra’s playing year on year.

The final part of the concert was reserved for our Senior Choir and the RGS Community Choir who, under the baton of Mr Fazlic, performed Vivaldi’s Gloria in D RV 589. This “classic” choral piece gave our choirs the opportunity to show great dynamic range, tight homophonic singing in Gloria in excelsis, Qui tollis, and powerful sectional singing in polyphonic choruses: Propter magnam gloriam and Cum Sancto Spirito.

Credit must be given to our superb soloists: Lottie Crave and Amanda Chakkoria (Lower Sixth, Laudamus te – duet), Amelia Lewis (Year 9, Domine Deus – Aria and Chorus) with Mrs Rebecca O’ Donnell whose oboe playing was stunning.

Not to forget Mrs Hillary Phillips (Community choir) who sang two Alto arias: Domine Deus, Agnus Dei and Qui sedes ad dexteram with passion and conviction.

H O U S E D RA M A This year, House Drama had a particularly musical flavour, as, along with the usual chaos of the group-devised pieces, and some stunning solo speeches, there were set-piece songs from great musicals, finishing with a spontaneouslyimprovised musical. The sight of Harry Gallagher (Lower Sixth) in full drag as Sandy in Summer Lovin’ will live long in the RGS memory, as will Charlotte Dargan (Lower Sixth) and Isaac Marchant (Upper Sixth) rekindling their old Tevye and Golde relationship in search of spontaneous vampire harmony.

It was also an education to see both James Critchley (Lower Sixth) take on Faustus and come out on top and Ruchika Thapar (Lower Sixth) take on the boys and leave them cowering. As ever, mayhem and madness: never knowingly undersold!

S T RAT F O R D T R I P Late September, and the first leaf fall of autumn, saw the A Level and GCSE Drama students pedalling hard down the motorway to Warwickshire and the Land of the Bard. The sturdy citizens of Stratford batted not an eyelid as Jude McQueen, James Critchley and Elliot Ashton-Edminson vied with each other to become the Bulldog champion of Theatre Green, to the tune of the merry bhangra boats plying down the Avon. Charlotte Dargan huffed, Maisie Fisher puffed, and Rachel McWhinnie, RASK and Miss Davison sat looking on serenely.

Meanwhile, Dillon Ingram and Dominic Hodgson-Bajoria were so impressed with the RSC’s Brummie take on Tartuffe, they spent the next 12 months suddenly exclaiming “Usman!” in public spaces for no apparent reason. Oh yes, and there was also some Shakespeare!

H I S DA R K M AT E R I A L S ( PA RT 1 ) How many worlds are there within a world, and how do we make a window to see into each? Philip Pullman’s classic novel was brought thrillingly to life in the tiny confines of the Studio Theatre by the serried ranks of our magnificent Year 9s.

No piece could demand more of a small cast than Nicholas Wright’s freewheeling adaptation, where ironclad bears mingle with Texan cowboys and Oxford scholars, Daemons slip in and out of different guises and entire universes stream away in golden rivers through clefts in the fabric of being.

How mightily our Year 9s strove to bring these events into our little world, with Willow Morris as the very image of Lyra Belaqua, and Daniel Edwards testy and unflinching as her soul mate, Will. Fabulous support came from the likes of Joe Wright as Lyra’s estranged father, Lord Asriel, Grace Stobart as her glamorously scheming mother, Mrs Coulter, and Maeve Lindsay as Lee Scoresby, the Texan balloonist. Special mention must also be made of Leila Humphrey, whose Iorek Byrnisson managed to be both tender and destructive at once, and a bear to boot – but really this was simply a triumph for a cast together who managed to bring these myriad creatures and multitudinous events to life.

PERFORMING A RT S C O RA M B OY The dark theme of this year’s performance schedule was doubled-down in February with this terrible tale of child slavery and infanticide to the tune of Handel’s Messiah.

James Critchley’s (Lower Sixth) chilling performance as Otis Gardiner, the Coram Man, all smarm and Dickensian artifice, the child catcher to haunt all our nightmares, accompanied by his idiot son, the sympathetic semimute, Meshak, played with sensitivity and charm by Joe Wright (Year 9), held the Miller Theatre audience in thrall as the winter wind blew outside and the body count built up under the stage. Grace Heslin (Year 11) gave her everything as the gifted chorister, Thomas Ledbury, in her final RGS performance, and there was able support from everywhere within a talented and committed cast, undaunted by the tragedies unfolding around them, not least in the bitter ironies of Dominique Hewitson’s (Year 11) traumatic birthing scene. Of particular note, was the playing of the younger chorus, many from Year 9, but some also from the Junior School, who excelled both as the Coram Fields orphans and the choir of Gloucester Cathedral. As ever, the mis-en-scene was beautifully handled by technical maestros Mark Burton, Ben Squire and Paul Edwards, and moments of peace and hope came in the performance of Angel by Chloe Dickinson (Upper Sixth), also in her last role at the school. Truly, then, this was a fitting send-off also to Mr Gilbert, the show’s director.

T H E A D DA M S FA M I LY Hotfoot on the heels of Hallowe’en, the Miller Theatre turned into Spooksville, as Fester, Pugsley, Wednesday and company cut some serious shapes in this year’s Blue Blazer musical. Outstanding performances came from Bede Doe (Year 8), as probably the world’s tiniest-ever Gomez, and Lola Fazlic (Year 8), his vampyrical wife, Morticia. The band, led by maestro Zlatan Fazlic, set a sultry, Latino mood, and marvellous back-up came from the vast cast of ghouls who were the family ancestors, ably choreographed by Sixth Formers, Charlotte Dargan and Chloe Dickinson. “Line Dance, do the twist, rigor mortis, gasp, gasp, gasp!”: what more needs to be said?!

Josie’s Dragonfly Trust supports young cancer patients by helping them and their families create precious and lasting memories together.

The Great North Air Ambulance currently fly three air ambulance helicopters across the North East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria, bringing pioneering pre-hospital care to the scene, rescuing hundreds of severely injured or ill patients every year. They rely on the support of the public to survive and operate.

Mental Health Concern provide a wide range of specialist services on behalf of the NHS and local authorities in the North East, aiming to improve the mental health and wellbeing of the people they serve.

A variety of activities took place across the week to raise money for these three charities; some activities for specific year groups, and some for the whole school. These included: Year 7 cake sale – all forms in Year 7 were involved and there were some wonderful cakes produced.

Readathon – Bookworms across the school were invited to take part in this year’s Readathon, which saw students sponsored to read as much as possible during Charities Week.

A non uniform day and second-hand clothing collection.

The Addams Family – Proceeds from the Year 7 & 8 production, The Addams Family, went to our chosen charities.

Newcastle East Foodbank – We asked individual forms to collect food parcels and donations for the Food Bank. More than 40,000 people in Newcastle alone accessed the Food Bank last year.

Items which were donated included pre-packed dried food, Christmas treats for different age groups, essential toiletries and household items.

A shot taken in the summer 2018 on the remote Scottish island of Lunga won the Cambridge Science Centre’s under-16 competition. In March 2019, her Pheasant Portrait won the CLA (Country Land & Business Association) Under 18 national competition and she retained the title of “Young Mammal Photographer” (Under 16s). A few months later, her picture, “Nap Time”, which was taken on The Inner Farne Island won Katy the New York Audubon Center’s International Under 18 prize. “Singing Starling” taken in Hyde Park, was the finalist in the London Wildlife contest and was displayed at King’s Cross for a fortnight.

A group of entrepreneurial Lower Sixth students have reached the Young Enterprise national finals after winning three awards in the regional round of the competition.

Bizzy Bee Books were awarded first place in the Disney Most Creative Company category and the Sustainability Award category, before being crowned Overall Winners on the night.

Following their success, the company will now go on to represent the north of England at the Young Enterprise Company of the Year awards 2019 in London.

Held on June 18th, the awards will be the grand finale of the 2019 Young Enterprise’s flagship Company Programme. Bizzy Bee will join thirteen other companies from around the UK and the overall winner will be crowned on the evening. The winner will go on to represent the UK at the Junior Achievement Company of the Year Final which is taking place in Lille, France in July, with President Macron in attendance.

Bizzy Bee have written, illustrated and published two of what they hope will be a series of books for children aged 6-9 years. With sales of over 80 books since the start of May, readers follow the adventures of Bizzy Bee, as he finds out about environmental issues affecting our planet and its inhabitants. Feedback from customers has been very positive and both children and their parents have enjoyed the combination of adventure and learning that the books offer.

Gifted classical singer, Amelia Lewis (Year 9), received recognition for her golden voice after winning the International Eisteddfod medal.

Amelia, who competed against 12 other singers from as far as Hong Kong, Indonesia and the USA, took the top prize at the prestigious competition after impressing adjudicators with the beautiful tone and power of her voice.

Speaking about the competition, which is attended by 50,000 people a year, Amelia, said: “It was a huge achievement to perform at The International Llangollen Eisteddfod with such a high standard of singers from around the world.

“Stepping out onto such a large stage, bigger than any I have performed on before, was just amazing. The atmosphere was electric backstage with all the different performers from different countries.

“Winning the medal at such a prestigious competition was more than I ever dreamt of. Knowing that I have performed on the same stage as some of the greatest singers such as Pavarotti and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is such an honour.”

F1 IN SCHOOLS After a very successful Regional Final, held at Nissan Sunderland in February, the F1 in Schools teams travelled to the Airbus factory at Broughton to take part in the UK National Finals this March.

Both teams performed very well against the tough competition, with the Development Class team, Igneous Racing, winning the Sponsorship and Marketing award for their class and coming 6th overall. The Professional Class team, Novo, also won the Sponsorship and Marketing award for their class and came 4th overall, narrowly missing out on going through to the Global Finals.

Miriam entered the University of Leicester’s Artefact to Art competition, along with students from around the UK, and won first prize for the 15-18 age category.

Her winning entry, a series of colourful ornaments, was inspired by the Samian pottery that was produced on a large scale in Gaul (modern day France) and ancient Roman Britain.

Speaking about the artwork, Miriam said: “I particularly liked the complexity of the designs of the figures and decorations that had been pushed through the surface of the pots, which is where I got the idea of converting these into ornaments, as well as adorning them with colour, to reflect the vibrancy of modern day society.”

Miriam, who is delighted to have won the challenging competition, used the skills she’d developed while working on her Extended Project Qualifications (EPQ) this year to produce her impressive piece.

The EPQ is part of our complementary studies programme for Lower Sixth students. They have to take on a selfmotivated and largely self-directed project, choosing a topic and then planning, researching and developing their idea before deciding on their finished product.

G RA H A M W Y L I E VISITS THE SCHOOL It was an honour to welcome Graham Wylie, founder of Sage and one of the North East’s most successful entrepreneurs and philanthropists, to the RGS. Graham shared some fantastic lessons in economics and life, speaking to a packed Miller Theatre about tea with Bill Gates, taking calculated risks and building a business at pace.

Max spoke about his fascinating career and shared memories of his time at RGS. He offered advice to those students thinking about a career in law and also answered any questions they had.

WO R L D B O O K DAY To celebrate World Book Day 2019, students, their parents and staff from across the Junior and Senior Schools were asked to donate any unwanted books, from much-loved children’s books to adult’s books, fiction and non-fiction, to create a giant book tree within the school reception.

With so many books donated, the book tree multiplied to become a book forest. Thousands of collected books were donated to a range of local state schools, where RGS Sixth Form students regularly read to young pupils, and local charity Borderline Books.

Our chess team retained their national title!

We were thrilled to welcome Old Novocastrian , Jonathan Bloxham (9904), acclaimed cellist and conductor who returned to school to speak to the Lower Sixth. He spoke openly about his musical journey and his love and passion for music. Jonathan captivated students with his engaging and lively talk about achieving and living his dream to be a professional musician.

He encouraged some students on the stage to ‘conduct’ and command their audience, which practically demonstrated the basics and essence of conducting and creating a musical vision. Jonathan closed the talk by indulging students and staff in a stunning cello performance. The students responded by singing an enthusiastic, “Happy Birthday to you”!

We were so honoured that Jonathan celebrated his birthday by coming back to his old school.

Two members of the team, Zheming (Lower Sixth) and Yichen (Year 6) were the only two students in the whole competition to remain unbeaten during the day!

2018/19 HOUSE COMPETITION September saw students old and new arrive with a spring in their step.

As the sun shone and term started, so did the 2018/19 House programme which offered yet more opportunities for our students.

HOUSE MUSIC Another student-led House Music competition was won

by Collingwood, on a night which saw the Miller Theatre host some outstanding performances (and also some ‘questionable’ singing from Eldon!) by students from both ends of the age spectrum.

H O U S E SW I M M I N G GA L A S We celebrated the sixth year of our swimming galas, with all students in Years 7 through to 10 taking part and swimming against peers of similar abilities from the other houses.

We had superb numbers and excellent conditions for the Miller Cup with 242 students volunteering for the cross country courses that set out across the Town Moor.

The younger students took a shorter route with no hills, whilst a challenging and somewhat muddier course awaited the senior students. There were a couple of sprint finishes, some excellent times and crucially, no casualties!

Thanks to Mr Walters and his team (Sixth Form directors and technical crew) we saw another slick House Drama competition play to a full house who lapped up the serious, the funny and downright bizarre, with Horsley narrowly taking the spoils….again.

The Track and Field Cup is a well-established national competition where each student competes in both a track and a field event in which they will get points for how far they have thrown, jumped or how fast they have run.

This year, the Junior Boys ended up coming in 4th place.

Some special mentions must go to Charlie Turnbull, Chris Kelly, Thomas Mann and Maxwell Shields, who performed both their events valiantly scoring very high for the team.

The Intermediate Boys faced very tough competition and they finished in 5th position. There were some fantastic efforts from James Parvin, Oliver Douglas, Marcus Laws and Zak Old, all scoring above 30 points each.

The girls’ team had a very different day, with both Intermediate and Junior teams finishing the day in 1st place.

Their team spirit and competitive nature really showed on the day. Special mentions for outstanding scores must go to Laura Cottee, Anna Dorman, Eloise Lamb, Jessica Cottee, Alice Geoghegan, Kate Salthouse, Willow Morris and Izzy Winter, who all scored extremely high on both their events.

This outstanding performance meant both teams qualified for the Regional ‘A’ final, with both finishing 2nd place on the day. The Junior girls finished on 321 points, missing out on first place, and a place at Nationals, by 35 points. The Intermediate girls finished on 345, which was 29 points off first place. A huge well done to all athletes who competed in this difficult competition.

In the City competitions, several of our top performing athletes qualified to compete in the County Championships.

The County Championships were held at Hexham on Saturday 8th June. Notable success came from Zak Old, Oliver Douglas, Thomas Mann, Willow Morris, Kathryn Johnson, Alice Geoghegan, James Parvin, Magnus Hextall, Kate Salthouse, Izzy Winter and Isobel Potier-Godhino, all qualifying to represent Northumberland at the Inter Counties competition. At the Inter counties, Izzy Winter, Isobel Potier – Godhino, Kate Salthouse and Alice Geoghegan all won their events which is a fantastic achievement.

UNDER 18 An enthusiastic and committed group of 6th Form students represented the school in the Newcastle Schools Basketball Series, as well as in fixtures against Dame Allans and Durham School. The boys displayed a high level of skill and a strong passion for the game. The team made good progress throughout the term and showed significant improvement in both skill and the ability to play as a team.

This group of students always played with confidence and a smile on their faces, bringing a positive attitude to both practice and games. Numbers grew throughout the term which bodes well for the future where we hope to further develop the sport at the top end of the school.

UNDER 16 The U16 team competed in the Tyneside Schools Cup where they progressed through to the finals. Having defeated Biddick in the regional round, thanks to impressive performances from Nathan Gough and Ed Corbett, the team came up against very strong opposition in the finals but still produced some excellent basketball, narrowly losing out to Durham Johnston and St Cuthbert’s.

UNDER 14 The U14 team took part in two competitions, the Newcastle Schools Tournament and the Tyneside Schools Cup. The side was made up of enthusiastic members of both the U13 and U14 Monday lunchtime club and enjoyed competing against schools with a long association with basketball. The RGS side very much worked on premise of skill and high work rate as our strength. We pushed several teams close and certainly had teams such as St Cuthbert’s and Gosforth worried. Special mention must go to Jakey Weech, who as Captain, helped to organise and motivate his teammates both on and off court. There is certainly a good number of U13 boys coming through that are both keen and able, so the future looks bright.

1st XI This young side has been maturing over the last 18 months or so, helped by more indoor time in the offseason and the inaugural Senior Tour to Sri Lanka. Sadly, the weather gods took their revenge for last year, with five games in May and June washed out. Nonetheless, we played 13 fixtures. There were some pleasing results brought about by excellent team performances and a strong bond within a group of skilful young people. The side progressed to the North final of the National T20, they convincingly beat Durham Academy, thanks in no small part to a brutal 100 from Bobby Green in Year 10, and played very well for large spells in other games.

The side was well captained by Rory Hanley, already successful in the top tier of the regional men’s game, who was able to dominate games with bat or with ball. This was best exemplified at the RGS Festival, this year hosted by Worcester, where he made 81 not out and 110 not out and 97 not out on the first 3 days, to chase down victory against two of the stronger sides. Rory finished as Player of the Tournament with over 400 runs at an average of 200 and some wickets thrown in. Perhaps most importantly, he showed that commitment to fixtures and diligent exam preparation are not mutually exclusive. He was ably supported by the rest of the squad, all of whom have county representative honours and are a pleasure to work with.

2nd XI Following this, our focus was now on the ‘Indoor 2nd XI Cricket Tournament’ held at South North. We were first up against St Mary’s, they were impressive with the bat, however some strong bowling from Walker and Aryan Seghal saw them struggle at the death. Ashton-Edminston secured some early runs which were backed up well by Heardman and Waterhouse. Sadly, RGS fell short of the required total. Our final game of the day was against NSB. Coming off the back of a strong batting performance we Next up was NSB away. We managed 106 off 20 overs so it was evident we would have to produce something with the elected to bat. In hindsight, this was the wrong decision as ball in hand. Bell and Peter opened our attack and managed we underestimated the fact that NSB were no strangers to indoor cricket. Some impressive batting from the Seghal’s, to swiftly dislodge the opening pair. Dame Allan’s were held to only 125 runs. However, we were some losses this season, it has been very enjoyable. unable to compete with a fiery Dame Allan’s bowling attack.

Thankfully Stembridge and Smeal gave RGS some lastminute hope as they only dealt in boundaries towards the end, however, sadly this was not enough as we suffered a 49-run loss.

There was a distinct buzz around the Common Room when it was announced that the 2nd XI would be facing old rivals Durham School in their first game of the season.

The game was held at home and Durham batted first, and were restricted to 76 runs after the 25 overs. It was now the home sides turn to bat and we managed to carve out a 7-wicket victory.

UNDER 15 The U15s enjoyed a very successful season with a record of 8 victories and only 1 defeat. Led by captains Bobby Green and Matty Brown, the team played some excellent cricket and produced some dominant victories.

With the bat, Bobby Green and Matthew Nice scored heavily on numerous occasions and were well supported

by Freddie Nickalls, Matty Brown and Will Walker, who grew greatly in confidence throughout the season.

With the ball, the opening pair of Alan Roskilly and Fraser Davies bowled with consistency and accuracy and picked up wickets early in the innings. The spin of Anish Krishnan was a key factor behind the team’s success.

The season got off to a fast start with a comfortable 9 wicket victory over NSB. Unfortunately, this was followed by a defeat against a strong Sedbergh side in the national cup competition. The team bounced back superbly with a fantastic 10 wicket victory against Merchiston Castle.

The good form continued with a 4 wicket victory over King’s, thanks to an undefeated 30 from Bart Farrier and 23* from the consistent Freddie Nickalls. There was an excellent 10 wicket victory against Dame Allan’s, where Will Walker picked up 2 wickets for 8 runs and Matthew Nice made a fine 62 not out in chasing down 93. Yarm were the next visitors to Jesmond and were left frustrated as a fine, allround performance saw the team to a 10 wicket victory.

Next up was a home County Cup semi-final against a good Duchess High School team. A superb 76 not out from skipper Bobby Green, and a well measured 43 not out from Matthew Nice, eased the team into the final. A fantastic game away at Ashville College followed, where a lacklustre fielding performance left the team chasing a challenging 193 for victory. On this occasion, it was a superb innings of 60 from Will Walker who came to the rescue and eased the team to a hard-earned victory.

The season finale was a County Cup Final against QEHS Hexham. Right from the off, the boys took control of the game. As wickets fell at regular intervals. Hexham had no answer to the spin of Krishnan (4-8) and Bajekal (4-11) as they were bundled out for only 48, as both spinners picked up magnificent hat-tricks in the process. The team eased to victory.

It was an excellent season in which the boys played some great cricket but also with a smile on their faces.

They proved to be a genuine team where all players were embraced and made to feel part of the group.

UNDER 14 Ultimately, this season will be seen as a successful one.

With a County Cup bagged and a positive win loss ratio, plus a super tour to Barbados at Easter, the team can be quite rightly pleased with themselves.

However, there is a slight tinge of regret that they did not manage an unbeaten season having only lost narrowly in games that could have been won. Under the excellent leadership of captain Ciara Boaden, the team started the season following a memorable tour of Barbados. The term started with a loss against local rivals NSB. Against Merchiston Castle, after an indifferent fielding performance, the side were able to chase down 229. Following the half term break, several fixtures were cancelled due to poor weather. This meant performances were a little less flowing, however, the team worked to stay in matches and produced some good displays both collectively and individually. Daniel Edwards began to show his pedigree and combined nicely with Daniel Stephenson to become an awkward opening bowling pair. Zak Old showed what an exciting prospect he is, with increasingly dangerous leg spin. The team went into the County Cup final full of enthusiasm, the team set a defendable, but achievable, score. In a match that had many a swing of momentum, it was NSB that went into the final over needing just 10 to win. However, with steely determination and some excellent death bowling from Laki Palaniappan and Yuvi Chauhan, the team held on to win by 2 runs! A truly exhilarating finish to a memorable season.

The U13 cricket squad had a very successful season and have really developed during the term. The boys were able to win five matches and reach the County Cup final in 2019, after a difficult 2018 season.

In a fragmented season, we lost four fixtures against good cricketing schools to the weather. Nevertheless, we played 10 games in total, winning seven and losing two. The best team performance was our seven wicket win over RGS Lancaster. Individual highlights included Joseph McMinn’s hat-trick against NSB and Rafi Mohammed’s spell of 5 for 1 against King’s. The Year 7 Cricketer of the season award went to Alex Nice. One major disappointment was our failure to reach the County Cup Final. We were outplayed

by Dame Allan’s in the semi. Overall, however, it was an enjoyable and successful season. The boys and girls were a talented group and played with spirit and enthusiasm.

They have much to contribute to senior school cricket in the years ahead.

There was some fantastic team results and individual performances along the way for the A squad, as wins over Ashville and Dame Allan’s, In both games, Dhruv Varier was outstanding; both with the bat, scoring 47 and 46 not out, and with the ball taking 3 wickets for 6 runs and wickets for 14 runs respectively.

The potential depth in the U13B squad, led by Matthew Rees, was demonstrated with three good wins over King’s and Dame Allan’s twice. These performances resulted in a few ‘B’ team boys progressing into the ‘A’ squad in the later part of the season, such as Harry Wilson, Jack White and Matthew Rees, all being selected in the A squad that played in the County Cup semi and final.

In the County Cup, the boys demonstrated some of the resilience they have developed this season by digging deep in both the quarter final and semi to achieve wins In the semi-final versus Dame Allan’s, a slow but positive start from Jai Premchand and Charlie Turnbull saw them each score 44/2 after 14 overs. However, a flurry of wickets left RGS on 64 after their 20 overs. The best bowling performance of the season followed for the RGS, with Eddie Mackay taking 2 wickets for 6 runs in his 4 overs and the dynamic spin duo of Butt (5 for 17) and Varier (2 for 9) saw Dame Allan’s collapse from 17/2 to 47/9 before a dramatic run out resulted in a deserved win. Unfortunately, the final was a step too far, as they lost to a very strong NSB side.

GIRLS

The boys team have had a successful year and it has been pleasing to see such a healthy number of keen runners representing the School come rain, sleet and snow!

This year’s cross-country season has been a pleasing one and it has been great seeing so many girls enthusiastic about taking part. The season opener was the Emmanuel College invitational, where both the Junior and Intermediate teams were able to secure 3rd place finishes. Next came the first round of the ESAA Schools Cup competition, where the Junior girls were placed 3rd and the Intermediates came 2nd.

The season began at the end of September with the Junior and Intermediate teams competing at the Invitational Emmanuel College race. The Junior team came away with a pleasing second place and the Intermediate team took fourth, in a particularly strong field. Both teams next competed in the ESAA Schools Cup County round at Gateshead and managed to progress to the regional finals.

Both teams should be proud of progressing in such a competition with so many strong teams and individuals.

Following the excitement of the regionals, both teams took part in the City Competition, which resulted in selection for several boys in the Newcastle team, where they competed at County level. In the Minor boys, James Hewson came third, with Jonny Johansen placing 14th.

This helped Newcastle finish first overall. In the Junior boys, Zak Old finished fifth, Oliver Douglass ninth and Marcus Laws eleventh, once again helping Newcastle finish first overall. In the Intermediate boys, Magnus Hextall and Finlay Dorman finished twenty-second and twenty-third to help Newcastle to fifth place overall. Whilst, Jake Dorman and Daniel Buffham represented the Senior boys, coming in tenth and eleventh respectively.

This success meant both teams qualified for the regional round of the competition at Stewarts Park, Middlesbrough, narrowly missing out on a place in the national finals.

The next challenge on the cross-country calendar was the opening competition of the National schools. Twenty girls represented RGS over the age groups in the City competition, with 15 managing to secure qualification through the county round of the competition to compete as part of the Newcastle team. Outstanding performances on the day came from Willow Morris (Juniors race) and Kate Salthouse (Intermediate race) who both placed 2nd in their race. The County competition was held at Temple park, South Shields, and although the weather was kind, the competition was tough. Five girls managed to secure Inter-Counties places from this event, with Kate Salthouse once again coming in the top three in her race. Kate Salthouse and Willow Morris both managed to secure themselves national final places, where they represented Northumberland at Temple Newsam, Leeds. With 400+ in each of their races and very muddy conditions under foot, both girls can be proud of their performances. Thank you to all girls who have taken part this year and I hope to see just as many competing next season.

L A S E R S H O OT I N G / P E N TAT H L O N 2018/19 has seen an increase in the number of pupils participating in laser run training each week. Laser run is part of the Modern Pentathlon and sees athletes combine the speed of running with the skill of accurately shooting targets, which is repeated multiple times.

RGS has been represented in school events throughout the year, with Toby Aberdeen and Kate Salthouse representing England (North) at the UK School Games in Loughborough – an amazing multi-sports event experience for both.

We have also had representations in regional championships events where Toby Aberdeen, Charlie Marshall and Thomas Vardy have competed towards qualifying for the Laser Run National Schools finals. Toby Aberdeen successfully qualified for the finals, held in September 2019.

FENCING It has been an exciting year as more fencers increased their training and experiences by linking into the local community club and entering more competitions.

The Year 7 and 8 boys, Toby Aberdeen, Eddie Mackay and Daniel Thompson, secured a bronze medal at the British School Teams fencing championships in a hard-fought competition.

Emilia Robson competed at the Public Schools Fencing Championships in London, an event we will be sending more fencers to in the future as we have had strong successes there in the past.

Eddie Mackay and Eve Golden competed in the English Youth Championships, Emilia Robson in the Scottish Youth Championships and Toby, Eve and Emilia in the British Youth Championships Finals.

P I S TO L S H O OT I N G This year saw the school win its first ever British Shooting Schools Championships team medals for pistol shooting.

The British Shooting Schools Championships brought together the best air pistol shooters from schools in the UK, which featured 608 athletes and 73 school teams representing 315 schools. Athletes competed across seven regional events in England, Scotland and Wales, to qualify for the National Final.

Toby Aberdeen, Henry Tulloch and Thomas Vardy shot their way into the bronze medal position in the junior age and Charlotte Currie, Carolyn Dickson and Lauren Robson managed to secure a silver in the senior age group.

In the individual event, Toby Aberdeen shot a strong score to secure a place in the finals but unfortunately Carolyn Dickson and Lauren Robson were eliminated in the qualification rounds. Carloyn Dickson secured her individual place with a bronze medal in the Scotland event, Toby Aberdeen secured his place with a gold medal and Lauren Robson with a 4th place finish in the England North event. Both the Junior boys and Senior girls secured their team qualifying places, with each team taking gold at the England North competition.

Our campaign has again been a mixture of 14 highly competitive league games, City Cup, County Cup, ISFA Cup and 8-a-side competition. Our league programme has enabled us to develop our younger players and has given our more senior players the opportunity to show leadership both on and off the pitch. Our captain, Tommi Johnson, was side lined for much of the season following an injury but has been of invaluable help in helping the coaches to organise training and supporting his team at many games, many thanks, skipper. Our league performance, in the end was pleasing and shows that we are developing as a squad.

This season has proved difficult for the Second XI, who ply their trade in the County Schools 2nd Division. Driven on by their passionate skipper, Greg ‘Sergio’ Raine, there was a real spirit in the team, which even a 9-0 defeat could not extinguish.

It is pleasing to report that we retained the City Cup, which we have now won for the last 5 seasons and we finished runners up in the final of the Subsidiary County Cup. As coaches we are delighted to win trophies of course but equally importantly we have been pleased at the way that students across three different year groups came together, learned from each other and made progress both as individuals and as a team.

The side performed better when they found the playing field levelled with two of the four wins during the season came against Dame Allan’s B team. The other side on the receiving end of a towering performance ending in a victory for ‘the Bs’ was Kenton Academy – also beaten twice during the season. So, 4 wins to boast of and 3 draws in 17 games is not a bad return for a team playing most of its matches against strong opposition.

Many thanks to all the players who put so much effort in during the season and never gave up, whatever the score.

There were some memorable moments – a 7-0 win at Kenton, a last gasp equaliser against NSB to make it 6-6 and some great goals scored by the team.

We need to thank all players concerned but especially those students who are leaving us this year and thank them for their commitment to the team and the RGS Football project throughout their time at the school.

An enjoyable season albeit consistently requiring resilience.

The U15 team had a collection of results this season ranging from an epic defeat at the hands of Gosforth High, to a convincing victory against independent school neighbours, NSB – the highlight of the season.

Whilst there is no hiding the fact the team has not had an easy run this year and didn’t manage to chalk up a victory, positivity and smiles have always remained. North East football in and around Newcastle is renowned for its standard, particularly amongst the state schools. Added to this, it is fair to say the side had a very tough start to the season.

Our season began at home on the luscious turf of the intake against a great footballing team from Bury Grammar in the second round of the ISFA cup. The first half was an even encounter – notable individual performances from Bobby Green and Matthew Brown were applauded for defending and quality finishing.

The quarter final of the City Cup was our next notable highlight. Another tough game against an extremely talented Gosforth High side saw us start brilliantly. Jack Lydon scored a screamer of a goal, wonderfully volleying into the net with one swipe of his left foot from range.

Our most enjoyable game of the season was the victory against our local rivals – NSB. We dominated the game from start to finish. The highlight of our 5-goal total was James Parvin’s twenty-yard strike.

Our final game was fittingly at home against touring team, Birkdale School. A feisty and combative affair, we were for large phases of play much the better footballing team.

First up St Mary’s, who it has to be said, were particularly strong and probably the best side we faced, followed up

by QE Hexham. Things then started to improve, with some familiar faces returning to training and competition starting build for places. By no surprise, with some consistency and better preparation, performances followed. With Oliver Smith beginning to pull strings and players such as Matthew Osborne, Joe Cooke and Laki Palaniappan making incisive and penetrating runs, we began to threaten opposition defences. It was pleasing to see effort and perseverance paying dividends.

All boys must be congratulated on their work this year and I hope they gain some deserved success as they move on into the next academic year.

It has been a challenging year for the U13 football team.

Making the step up from 9-a-side to 11-a-side, playing on a far larger pitch and injuries often preventing us from putting out a full-strength team.

UNDER 12 The U12 squad had a very successful season which saw them finish runners up in the City league and conceding to a narrow semi-final defeat in the City Cup against St Cuthbert’s.

In the league, the boys finished the season with 9 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats. The highlights were a 1-0 win over Walker, 4-0 against Heaton and a convincing win over local rivals NSB. The league came down to the last game of the season as the RGS boys suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat in the closing moments of the game to league champions, Gosforth Junior Academy.

It has been fantastic to work with such a committed and hard-working group of players, I wish them all the best for the future and set them the target of taking the next step towards a league and cup double next season.

GIRLS 1st XI After a successful tour in the Summer, the girls returned to pre-season with a clear sense of purpose and intent.

They had developed a new system of play and a unique set of performance goals which they’ve stuck to all season.

The girls set their expectations very high and have had some incredible results, starting with a 1-1 draw away in Sedbergh and a 5-1 victory at home against St Peters – both teams had competed in the national finals the year before.

This season also saw the change to the competition structure nationally, which meant the 1st XI competed in a national knockout cup competition which was the top tier in the country. The team managed to pull off an excellent performance away to Wakefield Girls High School in the 3rd round, which set up a 4th round tie at home against a strong Trent School team, who were already crowned Indoor National Champions. The team made it to the last 16 in the country, and as the last North School left in the competition, this was an outstanding achievement and the best in the school’s history.

Although the results speak for themselves, the consistency of performances week in and week out was fantastic.

A special mention to this year’s captain, Isobel Chaudhry, whose goal scoring record has been brilliant, and also to the Upper 6th pupils who are moving on.

2nd XI The mighty 2nd team have had an outstanding season.

Going unbeaten until their last match of the season against NHSG’s A team – where the girls fought valiantly with the score line being 0-0 at half time. The girls, who have been captained by Jules Clarke and Orla Jackson, have come together so well as a team, this year scoring 73 goals and only conceding 9.

One of the highlights of the season was reaching the North Finals and still fiercely competing against other schools’ 1st teams – an exceptional achievement for all the girls involved. Another highlight was when the girls played their first indoor fixture against Hymers. Although this was new to many of the girls, they all got involved and managed to play some outstanding indoor hockey.

It has been great to see the girls grow as a team. Their enthusiasm and consistency throughout the season could not have been better. A huge good luck must go to the upper sixth girls who are leaving us this year: Jules Clarke, Orla Jackson, Emma Davis and Caitlin Cressey, we wish you all the best for your futures.

They have learnt how to take positives away from any situation and make sure everyone plays an equal part. It was great to see Alice Geoghegan, Libby Chrisp and Rosanna Carrick Daly selected and playing an important part for the U16 team which reached the North Finals. All 3 girls also got the opportunity to play for the 1st team at some point in the season after their consistent performances all year.

Laura Gray captained the B team this year, doing an amazing job of organising and recruiting more and more players throughout the season. The girls trained extremely hard and played in the local County league, as well as some Saturday fixtures. They had mixed results but playing against tough opposition allowed their tactical understanding and teamwork to improve. A highlight was the County tournament, which was held at the end of the season. The two teams we entered were randomly mixed and they were given the responsibility of organising themselves throughout the day, which they did brilliantly.

UNDER 14 It has been a very exciting and successful season for the U14 Girls’ Hockey squad, culminating with them winning the County Cup, after a hard-fought match against King’s.

Going into the County round of the National competition, the girls won every match to progress to the Regional round. Regionals was an action-packed day with some great goals and great game play. We managed to get through to the next round after going to shuffles against Hull Collegiate. Sofia Busby made some exceptional saves leaving it up to a final shuffle by Miss Cottee who sent us through to the North Finals! Playing at the finals was such a fantastic experience for the girls and they really stepped up their game to play some outstanding hockey.

Over the season, Iona Stuart has done a fantastic job at leading her team as Captain, even scoring the winning goal in the County Cup final. Several of the girls have also been selected for development squads, including Ciara Boaden, Iona Stuart and Libby Reid.

The U13 Hockey teams have had an outstanding season!

The Year 7 girls started the year with high levels of Thye U13A team were unbeaten all season on Saturday enthusiasm and energy. This continued with increasing fixtures- winning 18 games scoring 74 goals and only numbers attending practices throughout the season, with conceding 18. The girls have all trained extremely hard over 40 girls playing in at least one match for the school, over the year with many extra training sessions taking place. which is impressive. With so many girls available, fixtures were arranged for 4 teams. The U12A team won 7, drew 4 and lost 6 matches scoring 30 goals in all. They had notable A highlight to the season was the Independent Schools Hockey Final, where the girls came 3rd in the country, wins against Sedburgh (6-3) and King’s Priory (6-0). The U12B team won 10, drew, 2 and lost 2 matches scoring scoring some fantastic goals and penalty flicks. The girls’ teamwork and group cohesion has really shone through 34 goals in total. They won a very tough game against Wakefield 3-1. The C and D teams won all their games this season, so much so, that opposing schools have commented many times on this. The girls finished their except for two and had a very impressive 5-1 win over season with a trip to Gresham’s, where they played some Dame Allan’s. Well done to all the girls who contributed to an excellent season. great hockey in the outdoor competition and learnt a lot from the indoor competition.

TEAM HONOURS – The B team have also had a brilliant season, only losing DUHC Junior World Cup Winners 2 games. The girls got their first taste of playing 11-a-side hockey in the league and rose to the challenge brilliantly, alongside playing 7-a-side for Saturday Fixtures. The girls’ skills levels and tactical awareness has gone from strength to strength, and this is evident in their results across the board. Their commitment to training and fixtures has been second to none.

B OYS 1st XI This season has been quite a journey for the 1st XI, starting positively against Yarm and Ampleforth in the England Hockey Tier 2 Cup, and then going to penalty strokes against Sedbergh in the ISHC. These early results gave the boys the opportunity to learn and develop as a group, cemented with an amazing tour to Holland in February, during which the team played against Rotterdam and Den Bosch Hockey clubs.

Coming back from Holland, the team carried a newfound belief and resilience, going on to beat a good Egglescliffe school side in the 2nd round of the cup. They then faced a tough away trip to Rossall School, in Lancashire. The Rossall match started well going 1-0, then 2-0 up before half time. The opposition were strong and managed to draw the game after full time, meaning the dreaded penalty strokes. However, the RGS boys under far tougher circumstances managed to win the game and demonstrate how far they’ve come this season. This result meant they would play Manchester Grammar School away, on a brand new Olympic standard water-based pitch. MGS proved to be a good side, well-organised and hard to break down and won the match 4-1.

The team have been a pleasure to work with this year, they are a talented group and have improved their mental toughness this season. We say goodbye to a large cohort of U6 pupils, including Hamish Burnett, Jack Brannen, Matthew Rush, George Combe, Shahmeer Hassan and Chris Ferrier, who we wish the best of luck for the future.

2nd XI This season has been hugely successful, with a win percentage of over 80%, conceding only six goals in eight games, scoring twenty-five and only losing one game against a Yarm side, who we beat in the away leg, later in the season.

Whilst the squad was not large in numbers, it was certainly large in heart. With Will Green leading the troops, the team were always prepared and ready to give their all.

Although the season started with a loss against Yarm, the team bounced back and saw off Barnard Castle with a resounding 3-0 win. This was followed up by another impressive draw against Sedbergh. From here on, the season and performances snowballed. A superb victory against St Peter’s followed and the team didn’t look back, conceding just one goal in four games!

It is difficult to pick out any names, as the basis of the team’s success was the fact that they were such a cohesive unit that worked hard for each other throughout. With a few players called up by Mr Wood to the 1st XI on a handful of occasions, there was certainly some sparkle which made all of the difference. An emphatic final victory against NSB, winning 9-0 was a fitting finish to a rewarding season.

UNDER 13 A committed and enthusiastic squad endured a challenging yet highly productive term of hockey. After a difficult start against strong opposition, the team came very close against Queen Ethelburga’s in the school’s National Cup, losing out in the last moments of the game. Led by Captain, Ben Wilson, the team bounced back superbly with some fantastic attacking play, leading to a comfortable win away at Barnard Castle. The team played a very attacking style of hockey, which saw many individual moments of excellence and high skill level.

UNDER 15 Whilst the team only played a handful of games, they showed they were more than capable, winning 75% of their fixtures. The team were ultimately successful thanks to their hard work, grit and willingness to do the jobs their opposition may not have wanted to. This was typified by Magnus Hextall, who invariably saved his team’s blushes by sweeping up at the back. There was also some sparkle and moments of magic supplied by the likes of Captain, Bobby Green, and Robert Dougal. All the aforementioned were worthy recipients to the 1st XI. However, it was probably Matthew Hayes who supplied the most memorable moment of the term, by scoring with the last play to seal a 3-2 victory against a formidable St Peter’s side.

UNDER 14 The U14 boy’s hockey team met some tough opposition at the start of the season and recorded loses against strong Yarm, Sedbergh and St Peter’s. Led by Josh Kim and Oliver Quinton (Vice Captain), the players who turned up to training worked tirelessly on the pitch, and towards the end of the season recorded convincing wins against NSB and Ampleforth.

Goalkeeper, James Reid, was excellent throughout the term, making some superb individual saves. He was ably supported in defence by Will Ponton and Robert Gold, who developed greatly throughout the season. In the midfield, Henry Young and Ben Wilson carried the ball with confidence and high skill levels. Hector Hoult provided width and utilised his strong stick skills to help create many scoring opportunities. In attack, Jai Premchand was a constant threat with his clever stick skills and goal scoring awareness. The term ended with the annual trip to the Gresham’s Festival. The boys put it some impressive performances and learned a lot from the coaching sessions on offer.

UNDER 12 The U12 boys have had an amazing term of hockey. Their commitment to training and matches has been incredible and as a year group, they have progressed well. The A and B team have played five fixtures each against other schools and one mixed game against the U12 girls. The A team won 3, lost 2 and scored 28 goals, the B team won 2, lost 2 and scored 9 goals. Highlights for each team this term are the A team beating Durham School, with each player getting a goal and new goalkeeper, Sam Wardle, keeping a clean sheet. The B team beat St. Olaves 3-0, with Seth Wylie captaining the team to success. Another highlight was traveling to Ashville School and playing in the torrential rain and wind. The boys showed excellent grit and determination to play on, even though the weather was horrendous. Special mentions to Luke Wintrip for being incredible in goal all term, Rory Linkleter for being the top goal scorer, Ewan Robb for most improved, Drew Taylor for being a key player on the pitch and creating most of the play and Jonny Johansen for brilliant commitment throughout the term.

SENIOR The Senior netball teams have had a good season. The 1st VII were successful in qualifying to the 3rd round of the Independent Schools’ Netball Competition, having beaten Ampleforth 40-26 in the second round. They met Queen Ethelburga’s in the 3rd round, and although they were beaten by a strong organised side, showed the drive and desire to keep going and fight for every goal, regardless of the score line; something they continued to demonstrate throughout the course of the season.

The team had some close games against Durham High School for Girls and Bradford Grammar, and as the season progressed, it was great to see their game play improve.

Special mentions go to Emma Davis, Louisa Clark and Jules Clark, who have led the team throughout the season. We wish them the best as they move onto the careers outside of RGS. The 2nd team had a tough season against some strong opposition. They recorded some narrow losses against St Peter’s, Yarm and Austin Friars. However, they pulled off some good wins against Ashville and Ampleforth towards the end of the season, showing how far they had come together as a team. Many of the U6 girls playing had represented the school many times before and it was great to see them turn up and play on Wednesdays and Saturdays for the school.

UNDER 16 The U16 A team set their sights high on reaching the National School Finals and have had an incredibly rewarding season. Despite the season getting off to a slow start, which included two early loses against rival schools, the girls didn’t let this affect their focus. After finishing runners up in the County tournament, the Regional Schools was the highlight of their season and a turning point for the team. The girls showed grit, determination and team spirit throughout the tournament. They were able to correct all of the early wrongs of the season by winning all their games, ensuring they were crowned Regional Schools’ Champions and qualifying for the National Schools’ Finals. The Nationals brought strong competition and a testing playing environment, but once again the girls worked hard and played hard for one another, which resulted in them having their best nationals finish. The girls should be very proud of their success this season and they were a pleasure to coach.

The U16 B team also had a pleasing season, which they started with a 3rd place finish in the City tournament. It was great to see several girls return to playing this season. Other notable results for this team were their games against Yarm and Austin Friars. The squad worked hard for one another, winning each of these games convincingly. A number of these girls have also played up for the Senior squads, as well as the U16 A team, which shows there is depth throughout this year group.

UNDER 15 The U15 A team had a tough year, as a lot of their fixtures were cancelled due to weather. However, in their game play and training they have shown great grit and determination to improve. A highlight of the season was the game against Wakefield Grammar. Although the result was not as we would have hoped, the girls demonstrated great teamwork and fought right until the end, narrowly losing and in turn being knocked out of the Independent Schools’ National Cup. The tenacity they developed in this game shone through later in the season where they met Ampleforth College. Again, this was a closely fought game but learning from previous mistakes, the team came away with a 30-27 win.

The U15 B team have continued to go from strength to strength this season, particularly in the local leagues and tournaments where they have been extremely successful.

In the City tournament they qualified for the semi-finals, only to be knocked out of the competition by NHSG’s A team. Building on this loss, they went on to meet NHSG’s B team in the local league, which finished on a nail biting draw of 17-17. Playing schools further afield, such as Barnard castle and Ampleforth, the girls demonstrated great teamwork and skills, leading to successful wins.

What a fantastic season for the U12 Netball Squad. The girls have made lots of progress over the year and have improved match by match. In the local league, the girls have had some brilliant results, winning every match apart form one.

The biggest highlight of the season was our trip to Barnard Castle, during which the girls played exceptionally. We had tough matches throughout the day, beating Durham Choristers, Yarm and drawing with St Olave’s to progress through to the semi-final. We played Barnard Castle in the semi-final; the girls played some beautiful netball to beat them comfortably. We met St Olave’s in the final again, and although the result didn’t go our way, the girls did extremely well and can be very proud of their efforts and commitment this year.

U N D E R 1 8 ST J O S E P H ’ S F E ST I VA L 2018 For the first time in history, RGS won the prestigious St Joseph’s College National Schools’ Rugby Festival after a sensational weekend of top-quality rugby.

The 1st XV went unbeaten during the festival, winning seven out of seven games, with some outstanding rugby full of precision and passion, played across the weekend. RGS were written off at the start of the festival after the draw had landed them in the group of doom with last year’s winners. The cup stage brought stronger competition but a solid 10-8 victory against Denstone College, 6-0 victory against Hurstpierpoint and a commanding 23-0 victory against Merchiston saw them march into the final. RGS beat 2017 runner-up and this year’s favourite, Millfield School, in the final to become the first northern side in over 20 years to win the trophy.

U N D E R 1 8 R O S S LY N PA R K 2 0 1 9 RGS were victorious for the very first time at the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens competition, winning the Under 18 Bowl title, 26-17 against Felsted School.

RGS made it through their initial group of four as winners and headed into an elimination match against Rugby School (eventual Vase runners-up), which saw the Midlands side take a convincing 29-0 victory.

The loss put RGS into the Bowl competition, where they would face an up-hill battle to progress through the tough group stages. With matches against Berkhamsted and Mount St Mary’s. The semi final pool saw victories against St Peters York and Campion.

The final was full of swings in momentum, Felsted held the lead for a while at 17-14, but could not keep RGS at bay, with the boys digging deep to take the lead 19-17 before making a poignant stop in front of their try-line, winning the ball back and making their way convincingly down the field and scoring the penultimate try to take a brilliant victory.

1st XV

2nd XV

The 1st XV have had one of the best seasons in the recent history of the RGS. They managed to win 18 out of 21 of their regular matches and were crowned winners of the 2018 St Joseph’s Festival and won the 2019 Rosslyn Park U18 Bowl.

After a slow start, the 2nd XV became an increasingly impressive side. The early stutter, four narrow defeats, owed something to several tough fixtures, but also to the coach and the team working out the strongest squad and getting the right players in the right positions.

The season started with a win against George Watson’s away, followed by a convincing 29-10 win against Durham in the Metcalf Cup at Kingston Park, in front of around 600 spectators. They went on to beat East Durham College 50-0 and the Grammar School at Leeds 17-0. In the same week, the team even faced the Haka against touring side Lindisfarne College, recording a 26-12 win. After losing to Woodhouse Grove 12-27, the team bounced back defeating Barnard Castle 36-0 and local rivals Dame Allan’s 38-7.

October saw the side win all four matches, culminating in a very impressive performance to beat Prince Henry’s, Otley 41-0: keeping a good 1st XV to nil showed how far the side had come. After two more narrow defeats, the side went unbeaten for the rest of the season, several of them to nil.

George Grainger captained the side well and there were also some outstanding individual performances, and others were consistently impressive. Given the preponderance of Under 17s, and how far many of those players have come, next season should be a good one.

Moving on to the Sevens season, we attended two tournaments with a development squad of mainly Lower Sixth players. At the NSB tournament, we had a difficult start. Playing against a strong Gosforth Academy, the 2nd VII put in a brave performance in defeat. This put us into the Plate competition, which we won with a dominant victory against Emmanuel College.

Out of 14 games for the Under 16s this season, we managed to win eight of them. A notable highlight was our 33-34 loss to St Peter’s York – the current Rosslyn Park winners for our age group. Although it was a loss, the entire team showed the tenacity to keep playing, despite conceding early, in addition to the fact that we had never beaten them before. Tom Dryden put in a spectacular performance scoring 3 tries, one being an interception, which undoubtedly helped, however it was a team effort.

That game epitomised the hard work we put in over the course of the season. We also managed to defeat a strong QEGS Wakefield side, who were incredibly physical, but once again we dealt well with the challenge and in the end beat them 26-3.

The U14s enjoyed a largely successful season in which they put in some impressive team and individual performances.

The season got off to a superb start with convincing victories over both George Watson’s and Durham School.

Led by Taylor Hannant and Sam Snaith, the team played an attacking and fast brand of rugby, leading to many tries and high scoring games. The forwards led from the front with some aggressive and dynamic carrying.

UNDER 15 The team certainly has a great sense of togetherness The team had some memorable victories against the likes of Durham, in which Saul McQueen announced his return, and a last play victory against LRGS in which captain, Ewan Venerus, led from the front. The victory against LRGS was probably one of the high points of the season in which hard work, coupled with grit and determination, saw the team reap their just rewards. The team has grown both physically, mentally and numerically throughout the year and that will hopefully continue the same trajectory into next year.

In the backs, there was some slick handling from scrumhalf Sam Snaith, which allowed Alistair Cook and Dan Stephenson to use their excellent running lines and skills to create space and scoring opportunities. Josh Kim was an ever-present member of the backline. On the wing, Marcus Laws made huge progress, proving to be a real danger when given space to work with.

The Sevens season was a frustrating one, with numerous events falling foul of the weather. Nonetheless, there were impressive performances in both the County Sevens event and at the National 7s event at Rosslyn Park. In the County Sevens, the team progressed with comfort through the group stage to set up and final against a strong and well organised KEVI Morpeth side. Thankfully, the team saved their very best performance for the final and came out comfortable winners in a superb final.

In the National sevens at Rosslyn Park, the team progressed through the group stage on the back of 3 strong victories. A disappointing play-off defeat against Hurstpierpoint College meant the team progressed to the Plate competition the following day. The team once again put in some noteworthy performances and set up a group decider against Finborough College. Unfortunately, the team lost against a strong opponent but can still be extremely proud of their performance in such a big event.

The U13s opened their account with a 10-point home defeat to Prince Henry’s Grammar School, Otley, but this was followed by a comfortable home win over Newcastle School for boys.

The season started back in August with over 40 boys attending preseason and culminated in December with the annual Ulster Rugby Tour, which saw 40 boys attending.

They played Dame Allan’s and won 25-20 in a close, hardfought game. The following week the team finished unbeaten in our own festival.

Victories against Dame Allan’s and NSB, and a draw against Nottingham High School, meant they had the same points as Nottingham but were placed second on tries scored.

Wins against Scarborough College and Aysgarth School followed. Defeats against Lancaster Grammar School and Wakefield were as always tough, hard-fought battles.

Players returning from injuries bolstered the side to a 40-10 away victory against Barnard Castle.

The Sevens side won the plate competition at the Terrington Hall Sevens’ Tournament and the Northumberland County Sevens.

With these great numbers, throughout the season we were able to regularly put out 3 teams, with a playing record of 14 wins, 15 losses and a draw over 30 games.

The season was opened with the Tait 10s at Barnard Castle School. RGS won all their pool games against Barnard Castle, Mowden and Craigclowan and progressed to the main pool of St Olave’s, Caldicott and QEGS Wakefield.

The team finished 3rd on the day, with a notable victory against Caldicott.

The highlights of the season were the fixtures against St Olave’s School, York, where we managed 2 wins and a loss, Dame Allan’s with 2 wins and the away fixtures against Lancaster Royal Grammar School.

GOLF GIRLS Girls rugby has continued to go from strength to strength, with girls from Years 7 through to 10 attending practices.

A special mention must be made to both Imandi Kumarapeli and Jess Slater (Year 10) who represented the county this year and have both had a successful season as part of the squad. The highlight of the season was the Annual Beach touch festival, where the girls enjoyed putting their practice and skills to the test.

The introduction of the Northumberland Schools Golf Series has been a welcome addition to the school’s golf calendar. The series event played over 4 events and 4 different courses (Longhirst GC, Matfen GC, Hexham GC and Bedlington GC) has provided opportunities for golfers of all abilities to play in a competitive environment. A core group of students (Will Wilkinson U6, Jake Shipley U6, Freddie Nickalls Y10, Bobby Green Y10, Neve Pearson Y9 and Gabbie Oliver Y7) have participated in these events and showed much progress and potential. Will Wilkinson was selected to represent Northumberland Schools at the North of England Schools Championship at Denton GC in Manchester.

In the Independent Schools Golf Matchplay competition, a team of Neve Pearson, Jake Shipley and Freddie Nickalls lost out narrowly 2-1 to Ampleforth College at Seaton Carew GC. Nonetheless, it was a performance of real character which stands the younger members of the team in good stead for the years ahead. Golf is still in its infancy within the school, but we are hoping it will continue to grow over the years to come and provide many more of our students with the vast benefits on offer from the game.

Will Wilkinson and Jake Shipley will both be leaving us after the summer exams. We would like to wish them the very best of luck and hope that they have many fond memories of their time playing golf for the school.

The 2018/19 swimming year has been fantastic. We had two swim teams qualify nationally for the ESSA National swimming relays and although we could not compete at the finals, due to other commitments, it was a great achievement for the U13 girls of Laura Cottee, Jessica Cottee, Naomi Parker and Ellen Land and U15 girls of Kate Salthouse, Izzy Winter, Amelia Robertson and Jemima Hutchinson, to qualify.

We have held numerous swimming events at our pool this year, including both friendlies and Tyne and Wear competitions. These have been a great success and an excellent opportunity to get lots of swimmers in the pool.

As always, we had a great competitive gala against Park View at the start of the season and we also swam against, Dame Allan’s, NHSG and NSB amongst other local schools.

Many of our swimmers compete to an extremely high-level outside of school and many also represent the school at other sports, so it great to see them able to represent the school.

Gymnastics club continues to be popular, with over 100 children attending on a weekly basis. The gymnasts’ competition season begins at the end of the autumn term with the annual House event – won this year by Stowell – and is used as a selection event for the school teams, competing at four age groups; U11, U13, U14 and U19.

At regional level, both boys and girls won their respective age group competitions and qualified for the British Schools National finals in floor, vault and floor, vault and trio competitions. The finals for both events are held in Stoke on Trent.

The U11 boys became British Floor and Vault Champions for the second year running, which is an amazing achievement. The U14 boys place third in a very narrowly fought competition with only 0.3 separating first and third places. In the floor, vault and trio finals, the U19 boys placed second, with the U11 team placing third and the U13 and U16 teams finishing in a respectable fourth position.

The girls’ team have also made fantastic progress and are now featuring in the top fifteen schools in the country.

In order to achieve results of this nature, gymnasts must commit to many years of training and therefore require some unique qualities. A true example of this type of student is Tom Huntley, who has been part of gymnastics teams since Year 3. He has won British Championships at U11, U13, U16 and U19 age groups. This year, Tom leaves us to attend Durham university and I am immensely proud of all he has achieved and the outstanding example he has set to others in the school.

S Q UA S H This year, both the boys and girls’ teams reached the National Squash Plate finals in Nottingham which is a fantastic achievement! The girls exceeded all expectations in their performance and attitude on court, finishing equal 7th but acquitted themselves well above that position.

The boys, four of whom are experienced squash players, also performed above expectations and although they finished 6th, were unlucky not to reach the final.

We entered a boys and girls team into the Newcastle Schools Games competition which is the first round of the National Schools Competition. Both teams progressed through to the next stage. TENNIS This has been one of the most successful years yet at the top end for RGS tennis. The senior boys’ and girls’ tennis teams qualified for the LTA National Championships Finals After a few knockout rounds between April and June, the last 16 teams nationally met at Nottingham Tennis Centre in July to compete for the title. All players experienced individual success in one way or another and had a great week. There were no team victories as such – the majority of the schools we were up against have dedicated tennis academies and tennis scholars: Queenswood; Merchiston; Repton; Culford; Millfield etc. – but what an achievement for both boys and girls to make it this far for the first time in RGS history.

Unfortunately, the weather got the better of quite a few of the Saturday tennis fixtures this year. However, around 40 local league matches were played and there were many successful tournaments at Yarm, St Peter’s, Queen Margaret’s and Hymers College. It was fantastic to see lots of students involved in different age groups both in practices and at a competitive level. At U15 and U13 level boys’ and girls’ teams compete in the LTA schools’ team’s tennis competition. We entered three teams for boys and girls at both U13 and U15 level and we’re hoping to build on this success in the coming year. Our teams did fantastically well, and the first teams all qualified for the knockout regional knockout stages in all four age categories by winning the local leagues in the summer term. We also utilised some of our star players from the Junior School with Ray Li, Elena Baggett and Lara Savic all representing the Senior School. The U13 boys came through some particularly tight matches against King’s Priory School and Ponteland, and its great credit to the team spirit of Jacob Beard, Charlie Baggett, Will Jones, Alastair McLeod and Alex Nice that they pulled through. The U13s teams also had a lot of success in the tournaments this year, most notably at Hymers College Mixed Doubles competition and the St. Peter’s Pre-Eton Festival.

The year finished with the annual trip to the Independent Schools Tennis Association Championships help at Eton College, Windsor, which is always a fantastic experience for the students. The standard of tennis is always high, and the weather was fantastic once again. Emily Allison and Kirstin McLeod were this year’s standout result, making it to the last 16 of the U15 girls’ competition and narrowly losing out to Millfield (eventual winners of the Shield) 6-4 7-5 in a fantastic match. The Saturday after we broke up saw 12 students head for a day out at Wimbledon, with everyone enjoying the pinnacle of British Tennis: watching tennis on Centre Court.
