Art & DT

Pre-Prep Art

Our Art journey begins in the early years, where creativity is encouraged to be joyful, hands‑on, and wonderfully messy. In Nursery and Pre‑Prep, children explore freely with clay, playdough, paint, and a wide range of tactile tools—from fingers to cotton buds and forks. These playful activities help develop both gross and fine motor skills while allowing pupils to express their ideas with confidence and imagination.

As children enter KS1, Art becomes more closely linked to their wider learning. Pupils experiment with different materials and techniques, learn about primary and secondary colours, and begin to develop control in their painting and drawing.

By Year 2, pupils start thinking more purposefully about their artwork and gain experience using a broader range of media. As part of their transition into the Prep school, they also enjoy introductory sessions in the dedicated Prep Art room.

Prep Art

Our Art studio is an exciting, visually stimulating and structured environment where pupils feel comfortable to take responsible risks, to be creative, experimenting with materials and to express their ideas visually.

Projects usually begin with drawing in a sketchbook; developing skills of observation, followed by further research and reflection on relevant artists. This then progresses to a finished piece of 2D or 3D work; sometimes both.

Pupils work with many different materials – not only drawing and painting, but also needlework, sculpture and ceramics where we are fortunate to use our own kiln in school for firing finished pieces of work.

Children who excel in Art are invited to attend additional workshops from visiting artists. Pupils receive help with the preparation of their portfolios for applications for Art scholarships, and each year we are proud that a number of our pupils are awarded scholarships at their chosen senior school.

In the younger years, children gain their first practical experiences and learn to construct with a purpose in our design and technology department. Throughout Pre Prep, pupils are encouraged to explore, investigate and learn the importance of planning.

In our dedicated workshop, from Year 3, pupils learn how to use tools and machinery safely and independently and are rewarded with a certificate for mastering the equipment.

From food studies to woodworking, soldering to laser cutting, our pupils then are exposed to a variety of techniques that allow them to develop the skills they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving world. Pre-Prep DT

This exciting curriculum is project based and focuses on giving our pupils the widest range of practical experiences possible, developing their skills as they progress through the school.  Each project begins with research, a project brief and specification. After reflecting on their initial ideas, pupils produce a final development drawing ready to build from.

Once a project is constructed, pupils learn the importance of evaluating, and will look at what they did well, and how they could improve products if they built them again.

Our extensive Design and Technology learning journey is created for all abilities and pupils love to discover the limitless potential of making and creating.

In Years 3 & 4, pupils take part in both external and in house workshops, some of which we welcome the local schools to join.

Year 5 & 6 pupils enjoy going on DT trips and have the opportunity to visit the Senior School to use advanced tools and machinery.

At RGS Prep, we’re empowering tomorrow's innovators today.
