HOUSE SPORTS DAY 2026

As Bird, Cranston, Hodgson and Williamson come together again for our House Sports Day, RGS Hartswood takes on its most vibrant form. This is a welcome moment to be outdoors as a school community: competing, encouraging one another and enjoying the shared spirit that sits at the heart of House life.
Students from the First to Fourth Forms will be spread across the track, courts and pitches, backed by the energy of their Houses and supported by our excellent Lower Sixth helpers. There is no single way to contribute to today’s success: some will chase fine margins in athletics, others will relish the teamwork of Cricket, Rounders and Ultimate Frisbee, and many will have their moment in the always-popular mixed relays. For families and friends on the touchline, we hope you will enjoy the spectacle, the colour of the banners and a welcome refreshment or two as the day unfolds.
Of course, we celebrate outstanding performances and the pursuit of excellence. Yet the bigger prize is what sport teaches when it is done well and our mission is clear: to develop good people through sport.
HOUSE SPORTS DAY

From the HEADMASTER
It is through commitment to the team, composure under pressure, respect for officials and opponents and the resilience to respond positively when things do not go to plan that character is formed. If you are trying something new today, or returning to an event you love, do so with courage and generosity of spirit - those are the habits that last long after the final whistle.
My thanks go to the Heads of House for galvanising their teams; to the PE department for planning, officiating and keeping everything moving; to our Estates team for presenting Hartswood at its best; and to the catering team for keeping competitors and supporters well-fuelled. Thank you, too, to parents and families for the encouragement you give throughout the year - it makes an enormous difference. Individual and team athletics prizes will be presented at our final assembly of term; today, though, is about participation, belonging and House pride. I wish all students, staff and supporters a happy and memorable RGS House Sports Day.

SPORTS DAY FOREWORD
Sport never slows at RGS, and this year has been no exception. While results, scores and records matter, so too do the smaller moments that say something about the culture of sport in this school. The student who helps a friend up after a fall, the teammate who celebrates another’s success as if it were their own, or the pupil who keeps turning up to training despite setbacks and disappointments. These moments are just as important as medals, and often more telling.moments are just as important as medals, and often more telling.
Sports Day is an opportunity to bring all of that together. From athletics and relays to House competitions and individual challenges, it is a celebration of participation, performance and community. I hope you will notice the support on the sidelines, the pride in the House colours, and the enjoyment that comes from students competing with and for one another.
This has been another hugely successful year across RGS Sport. Our teams and individuals have represented the school with distinction across a wide range of sports, achieving success at local, regional, national and international level. Just as importantly, more students than ever before are engaging regularly in sport and physical activity, helping us continue our mission of developing great people through sport.
The opportunities available to our students continue to grow. This year we have launched exciting new partnerships with Chelsea Football Club and former England cricketer Jason Roy, whilst extending our longstanding partnership with Holcombe Hockey Club. Together, these relationships create new pathways and experiences for students across our sporting programme.
They complement the outstanding work of our own staff and help ensure that every student can access high-quality coaching, support and inspiration, regardless of their aspirations or starting point.

From the DIRECTOR OF SPORT
Looking ahead, September marks another important milestone as football becomes a core Games option across the school. Alongside our established strengths in rugby, hockey, netball and cricket, this will provide even more opportunities for students to find a sport they enjoy and develop a lifelong relationship with physical activity.
We are also excited by the continued progress towards the new Andy Paul Sport and Activity Centre, due to open in September 2027. This transformational development will provide outstanding facilities for future generations of RGS students and further strengthen our commitment to sport, health and wellbeing.
None of this would be possible without the dedication of our staff, coaches, officials, parents and volunteers who give so much of their time to support young people. My thanks also go to our Sixth Form leaders and Sports Day team for all their work in making today possible.
Most importantly, thank you to the students. Whether competing for records, representing your House, supporting friends, or simply getting involved, you are what makes sport at RGS so special.
Enjoy the day and best wishes for the summer ahead.

VISION FOR SPORT
Sport continues to evolve at RGS, shaped by our clear and purposeful vision: to develop great people through sport. More than just physical activity or competition, our programme is underpinned by values and behaviours that help students to grow as individuals, teammates, and leaders.
This year, the stories of sport at RGS have increasingly reflected a culture where belonging, commitment, and character are at the heart of every experience. Whether on the training pitch, during fixtures, or through our leadership pathways, students are encouraged to be part of something bigger than themselves. While individual excellence is celebrated, we place equal importance on collective effort – the Team Reigate spirit.
At the core of our approach is a commitment to developing great PEOPLE through sport. This acronym captures the traits we believe matter most - a shared language that shapes how we train, compete, and support one another. It also forms the basis of our department’s mission and success criteria.
We aim to create an environment where every student on the pitch has a positive experience – whether they are wearing an RGS jersey or representing another school. We want our games to be competitive and hard-fought, with results that remain in the balance as long as possible. This keeps players engaged and supports the development of perceived competence – a key ingredient in long-term enjoyment and motivation.
Importantly, we value collaboration with opposition as much as competition against opposition. We want our students to succeed, and we celebrate their victories. But sport is not a zero-sum game. It is a shared experience that brings joy, learning, and connection –whether you win, lose, or draw.

VISION FOR SPORT
