With your support, our team continues to grow, reaching every corner of Queensland with life-saving care.

As we approach our 100th anniversary in 2028, it’s humbling to reflect on how far we’ve come. In 1991, the RFDS (Queensland Section) made the pivotal decision to employ its own nurses.

“Before this time, nurses were commissioned from the Division of Maternal and Child Health to assist RFDS doctors on emergency aeromedical retrievals and at remote clinics,” RFDS Nurse Practitioner Maree Cummins said.

“I had kept in touch with the RFDS because I heard they were thinking of employing their own nurses,” recalls Maree. “Then six positions became available.”

From those six founding

nurses to more than 100 aeromedical and primary health care professionals today, your care and commitment have helped transform how our nurses support regional, rural and remote Queenslanders.

Suzanne Hood, RFDS’s first nurse supervisor who recruited the founding team, called it “the highlight of my whole nursing career.” She, along with Maree Cummins and Susan Markwell – two still serving today – witnessed first-hand how your kindness has transformed rural healthcare. The advanced equipment you’ve helped provide from portable ultrasounds to ventilators – now allows our nurses to

deliver intensive care 30,000 feet in the air!

Your compassion also funds specialist training programs that equip our nurses to handle everything, as well as professional development and pathways to become nurse practitioners and specialists in fields like midwifery and mental health.

This investment in expertise saves precious minutes during critical retrievals and brings specialist care directly to remote communities.

“Aussies help Aussies.

That’s just the Aussie spirit.”

A news report inspired Brett and Nicola to join our Support Crew.

Now, their regular gifts are saving lives in the Outback.

Having worked for a bus company that ran Outback safari tours many years ago, Brett already had first-hand experience with the RFDS. “We’d called them a few times when we had serious medical emergencies with our passengers,” he shares.

But it was a news segment on A Current Affair that opened Brett and Nicola’s eyes to just how crucial the Flying Doctor’s services are to Queenslanders in need.

“A story came on about the RFDS helping a teenage girl up north. It really moved us.

My wife Nicola and I looked at each other and said, ‘we need to get involved in that.’”

For Brett and Nicola, the decision to become regular givers to the Flying Doctor was only natural.

“Aussies help Aussies. We don’t have to know you to help you – that’s just the Aussie spirit. We know that our little donation is just a drop in the bucket, but that

Since joining our Support Crew, Brett and Nicola say they look forward to receiving regular updates on how their support is making a difference.

A LIFETIME OF SERVICE TO OUTBACK COMMUNITIES 10 years after joining the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Dr Andrew Bai continues to be driven by a childhood promise made in rural China.

When seven-year-old Andrew Bai watched his grandmother suffer after being kicked by a cow, hours passed before she could reach a doctor.

After witnessing firsthand the harsh reality of living without accessible medical care, he made a promise that would shape his entire future.

He would dedicate his life to bringing medical care

to people in remote areas who needed it most.

Today, Dr Andrew marks his 10th anniversary as a Senior Consultant Aeromedical Officer with RFDS (Queensland Section).

Based in Brisbane but regularly flying to Mount Isa, Dr Andrew brings not just medical expertise but a deep understanding of the

challenges of isolation.

“People in rural areas are so stoic, they never ask for help until they’re desperate,” reflects Dr Andrew. “RFDS is their triple zero, their GP, their lifeline. We’re their backup.”

This commitment was dramatically demonstrated in June 2023 when Dr Andrew’s crew saved Craig, a man who had suffered a cardiac arrest at Tobermorey Station.

Within 10 minutes of the emergency call, they were airborne. The team’s swift response, combined with life-saving equipment funded by generous supporters, meant Craig received life-saving care he needed.

“Without supporters who fund training and help put the equipment into our hands, I wouldn’t have been able to help Craig,” Dr Andrew says.

“Your generosity can really save a life – it’s that simple.”

After more than a decade of service, what keeps Dr Andrew returning to Mount Isa? “It’s the people we serve and the community spirit. Flying over Gregory Downs and Urandangi reminds me of my hometown.

I feel like I’m home.”

Back in the

Driver’s Seat

Craig’s remarkable recovery after life-saving RFDS flight.

When Craig collapsed at a charity car rally in June 2023, his heart stopped beating.

After 30 minutes of CPR and three defibrillator shocks, he was flown by RFDS from Tobermorey Station to Townsville. Today, Craig has made a complete recovery and he’s back at work.

The vital cardiac equipment you helped fund, including defibrillator pads, ECG monitors, and life-saving medications, was crucial during Craig’s emergency.

RFDS crews worked throughout the two-and-ahalf-hour flight, managing complications as Craig went into cardiac arrest again during the journey.

“I should be dead,” Craig says. At Townsville University Hospital, he received stents to unblock his arteries. His cardiologist later described his recovery as “astounding,” noting that Craig’s heart is “functioning like it’s never had a cardiac arrest.”

After months of recovery from fractured ribs and sternum caused by CPR, Craig has returned to his work as a bus driver with Shire Bus. “I’ve just got my bus driver’s

licence back,” he said.

“Your donations literally saved my life,” Craig says.

Your generosity gave him so much more, a second chance and someone special to share it with.

Craig and Yvette, a trained nurse and paramedic who helped coordinate his rescue that day, have been travelling and just completed a 10-week trip down the west coast of Australia.

This year’s rally ended in Townsville, where Craig’s life was saved. It seems fitting that he’d return there, healthy, happy and with Yvette by his side – living proof of the life-saving difference your support makes.

A DAY IN

Nick’s life Here’s how your kindness makes my work possible, each and every day.

For most GPs, a day in the office follows a familiar routine. But for me, as a GP for the RFDS up here in Cairns, no two days are ever the same. And it’s the equipment you fund that makes all the difference.

At 7:00am, my team and I load our aircraft with the portable diagnostic tools your kindness puts in our hands – ECG monitors, defibrillators, ultrasound machines, pointof-care testing devices, spirometry equipment, and surgical packs. We carefully carry everything aboard for the flight to Croydon – eight hours by road but just an hour by air.

Landing at 9:00am, I carry this precious equipment

into the clinic. Some remote clinics like Greenvale are essentially sheds – we need to bring absolutely everything. Because of this equipment, I can perform procedures that previously couldn’t be done here.

At a clinic like this, you need to be ready for anything! The cases we see are incredibly broad, ranging from preventative care and vaccinations to emergencies like heart attacks, strokes, and road trauma. We even treat conditions you only read about in textbooks, like rheumatic heart disease.

Your support means we can do emergency blood tests in minutes. Cardiac concerns are assessed immediately.

Potentially fatal melanomas are cut out on the spot, saving patients hundreds of kilometres of travel.

When acute emergencies arise, our equipment lets us stabilise patients before the aeromedical team arrives.

By 5:00pm, I’ll have seen dozens of patients, providing each with city-quality care in their own community.

Flying back to Cairns, I’m grateful to people like you for funding this crucial equipment. It doesn’t just improve healthcare; it keeps families together.

YOUR GENEROSITY EQUIPPED OUR CREWS TO SAVE YOUNG ASHER’S LIFE Thanks to you, RFDS aeromedical crews have the vital procedure packs they need to respond to emergencies like seven-year-old Asher’s frightening shark encounter.

When what appeared to be a dead shark suddenly came to life in her dad’s hands during a family boating trip in Far North Queensland, Asher suffered deep wounds to her knee.

At first, the injury seemed minor. But it wasn’t long before it became life-threatening.

That’s when your kindness helped ensure our crew had the expertise and essential medical supplies they needed to save young Asher’s life.

During Asher’s critical 700-kilometre flight from Lockhart River to Cairns Hospital, Flight Nurse Patrick provided immediate, comprehensive care on board.

At the same time, after reviewing pictures of Asher’s

wound, RFDS Telehealth Dr Davina warned that bacteria from tropical waters posed a severe infection risk that could lead to the loss of Asher’s limb – and our crew was prepared for that too. Upon arrival at Cairns Hospital, specialists discovered Asher had a punctured artery, and she was rushed into emergency surgery. Thanks to supporters like you, our aircraft function as flying intensive care units — equipped and ready for any emergency.

Without the Flying Doctor’s rapid response, this family adventure could have ended in tragedy. And because of your ongoing support, our crews now carry procedure packs stocked with everything from QuikClot gauze to control bleeding, to thermal cocoons for patient protection, ensuring we’re ready for emergencies like Asher’s. Today, Asher lives life to the fullest, playing netball, gymnastics, and even swimming! “You would think an experience like that could make you fearful of some things, but she is always the first to give anything a go and does everything with gusto!” says Asher’s mum, Niki. “She carries a scar that prompts questions, which she loves answering by sharing her story.”

ACROSS QUEENSLAND For many children in rural and remote Queensland, visiting the dentist can feel impossible due to distance. Thanks to your generous support, the RFDS Dental Service is changing that – one smile at a time.

Our Principal Dentist, Dr George Chen understands that access to oral health services can be life-changing for communities.

“We’re always looking for innovative ways to reach more people across the state,” George says.

Creating positive dental experiences starts early. RFDS Dental Assistant, Tayla, shares her top tips for parents: “Kids are way smarter than people think. Instead of telling them they have to brush their teeth, teach them why!”

Her advice includes using positive language about the dentist, watching educational episodes of CoComelon or Paw Patrol that explore dental visits, and making oral care fun. Simple habits make a difference – brushing every surface for two minutes twice daily, flossing regularly, and drinking water after meals to wash away sugars.

“Put your toothbrush on your pillow if you forget,” Tayla suggests. “And never use the dentist as a threat!”

Picnic with the Planes CELEBRATES COMMUNITY ACROSS QUEENSLAND Four bases, four successful events, and thousands of smiling faces – the inaugural Picnic with the Planes series, presented by Textron Aviation, has brought communities closer to the life-saving work of the RFDS. What began as a simple way to connect with our supporters has grown into one of the RFDS’s most cherished community events.

With more than 2,500 people joining us across Roma, Bundaberg, Townsville and Rockhampton, families gathered to see the iconic red-belly aircraft up close and discover how your support saves lives every day.

Your enthusiasm made each event special. Children climbed into cockpit seats with wide-eyed wonder, while parents watched live patient

loading demonstrations that showcased the precision and skill of crews you help keep in the air.

Mums and Dads explored our state-of-the-art Aeromedical Training Academy, and kids tested their flying skills in our travelling simulator – getting a firsthand look at the equipment and training your generosity makes possible.

“It’s an honour to support such an important and compassionate organisation,” one person shared, capturing the sentiment echoed

throughout each day. The overwhelming response – with tickets selling out in record time – demonstrates Queenslanders’ deep connection to the Flying Doctor.

Honouring Cheryl: The legacy gift that keeps her memory soaring.

Whenever a Flying Doctor aircraft passes over his home, Ian remembers his wife’s crucial flights with the RFDS. Each one reminds him of the care that gave them more time together, and of the love that now continues through their legacy.

Ian and his wife Cheryl had just retired when they decided to move from London to Hervey Bay in Queensland.

For Cheryl, it was a dream come true. “She’d always wanted to move to Australia,” Ian remembers. “The moment we got here, I knew we should have moved years ago.”

Sadly, it’s just Ian now.

In 2022, Cheryl tragically lost her life to leukaemia.

“She was crook for ten years, and in a wheelchair for most of that due to nerve damage caused by her chemo.”

Through all those difficult years, the Flying Doctor was part of their story, bringing hope and comfort when they needed it most. Cheryl flew to Brisbane with the RFDS many times for the care that kept her going, and in that time she and Ian developed a deep affection for the RFDS and the people behind it.

“We were so impressed with the RFDS. We travelled extensively around Australia, and wherever there was an RFDS Visitor Centre, we made sure to call in, say hi, and drop a couple of dollars into the donation box. We visited the base in Port Augusta, in Alice Springs, in Charleville, in Cairns, in Longreach, and in Darwin.”

keep this same vital service available to others.

When Cheryl sadly passed away, Ian wanted to ensure that her memory – and his own – would continue to support the Flying Doctor long into the future. That’s why he chose to honour her through a gift in his Will, a lasting gesture of love and gratitude.

“I wanted to help the RFDS continue doing what they already do so well.

“The RFDS really is a lifeline for people in the Outback.

You hear stories of women in labour hours away from the hospital. You hear about people coming off horses or motorbikes. You hear of equipment overturning with no help in sight. And the RFDS is always there to help – whenever and wherever.

“Not to mention the dayto-day stuff, like clinics and dental care that save people’s lives even before things become an issue.”

When asked what he would say to anyone considering a gift in their Will to the Flying Doctor, Ian’s answer was simple: “Do it. Just do it. I know it can be a difficult subject, but none of us are going to live forever. And it’s such an easy process that will benefit so many people when you’re gone – I don’t think you can do any better than that.”

YOUR COMMUNITY IN ACTION making every kilometre matter When Coda Fowler and his team at the Rotaract Club of Australian Gamers built virtual RFDS aircraft in Minecraft during a 24-hour charity stream, they joined a growing movement of Queenslanders turning their passions into powerful support for the Flying Doctor.

“Gaming has the power to create positive social impact,” says Coda, whose team was one of ten groups across Queensland who embraced Change the Game in May of last year, collectively raising over $15,000.

Following their phenomenal efforts, Coda was invited to an exclusive tour of our brandnew Aeromedical Training Academy in Bundaberg. “It gave us a deeper appreciation of where the funds we raised go and the real difference it makes in people’s lives,” he shared after the tour.

innovative approach to fundraising that shows new ways to support the Flying Doctor.

But Gaming isn’t the only way for people to get involved in supporting the Flying Doctor.

October’s Oceans to Outback, for example, saw thousands of Aussies walking, running and riding across the state, helping raise over $4.5 million. This brought the four-year total to more than $13 million to support fuel for flights, fund medical equipment upgrades, and save lives throughout Australia’s most remote communities.

And the diversity of fundraising participants continues to grow. Whether

it’s young gamers streaming from their homes, fitness enthusiasts pushing their limits, or community groups rallying together, everyone brings their own unique energy to supporting the Flying Doctor.

Looking ahead, Fit to Fly will offer another opportunity to transform daily exercise into community care.

Walking just 3km a day will contribute to funding over 12,000 mental health consultations annually for Queenslanders who need them most. It’s the perfect blend of personal wellness and community support!

For the meringue base: 4 large egg whites, at room temperature 1 cup caster sugar 1tsp white vinegar 1tsp cornflour 1tsp vanilla extract

For the topping: 300ml thickened cream 2tbsp icing sugar 1tsp vanilla extract 2-3 ripe mangoes Passionfruit pulp from 2-3 passionfruit Fresh mint leaves (optional)

METHOD: Preheat oven to 150°C. Line a tray with baking paper and draw a 20cm circle.

Beat egg whites to soft peaks. Gradually add sugar, beating until thick and glossy. Fold in vinegar, cornflour and vanilla. Spoon onto the circle, creating a shallow well with raised edges.

Bake at 150°C for 5 minutes, then reduce to 120°C and bake for 1 hour 10 minutes. Cool in oven with door ajar.

Whip cream with icing sugar and vanilla. Slice mangoes. Top pavlova with cream, mango and passionfruit pulp.
