Portland, our region provides urban cultural and dining experiences near rolling farmlands and quiet neighborhoods. Whether you have come for a day, are staying to play, or making the Lewiston Auburn region home, this guide will showcase world-renowned spots and insider secrets to make the most of your time here. Our people are welcoming and hard-working, a reflection of our rich history of immigration. One of the most diverse populations in Maine, we boast the city with the youngest average age, too! Our food + dining options provide selections for every palate and budget, built on the region’s strong support for local foods and farms. Small, family-owned diners and pizza shops are situated next to diverse offerings from Africa, India, Vietnam, Italy, and France. Our arts + cultural offerings can be found as murals on street corners and three-story parking garages, performing arts in parks or world-class theaters, and in galleries and artisan shops. Our activities can be enjoyed across the four seasons: outdoors on trails for skiing, snowmobiling, biking, and hiking, on our rivers and lakes for paddling or swimming, or in any of the 20 cultural and community festivals. Our communities number 16 across the county, and offer waterfront capes, working farms, and city condos as places to call home - whether you prefer to live close to your neighbors or have acres to yourself.

Come to explore; stay for a lifetime of discovery.

DINING IN LA

Courtesy of Sonder & Dram

The food and dining scene in LA reflects the long history and diverse cultures of the area. Start your day with a wood-fired sourdough bagel from Forage Market, named “America’s Best Bagel” by Saveur magazine. Just a block away you can visit Heritage Restaurant, an African restaurant that serves up traditional dishes such as sambusa, a meat-filled pastry with African spices sure to make your mouth water. No trip to the area is complete without a red hot dog from Simone’s, the oldest hotdog stand in Maine. A local diner known for its yummy food and warm, family-run atmosphere, Simone’s has been a required stumping spot on the political trail for any aspiring politician in the state. Interested in nextlevel mixologists making handcrafted cocktails? Stop by Sonder & Dram for one of a kind libations.

THINGS TO DO:

Spotlight On PUBLIC ART Lewiston and Auburn embrace public art to promote cultural, aesthetic, and economic vitality. From crosswalks with pavement murals for pedestrian safety and neighborhood identity, to commissioned significant works by Maine sculptors at major gateways, local public art adds to the quality Courtesy Sun Journal reporter Daryn Slover

of life for both residents

and visitors. With increased investments in public art each year, the urban visual landscape is becoming activated with public art to both reflect the community’s heritage and envision an increasingly diverse and welcoming future. This is especially evident in neighborhoods and small parks where works have been installed by artists after resident participation to ensure that public art is a true reflection of the community.

stay to play

Stay to Play A week is (almost) enough time to see all that the region has to offer. You can plan your trip around one of our 20 festivals, celebrating hot air balloons, international dance, and local agriculture, or curated to help you find artisan goods for the holidays. Whether planning or attending a wedding, or just staying for a few days, there are many ways to stay active. You can hike or bike on one of our many trails with waterfall views or breathtaking vistas, bring your golf clubs and enjoy one (or all 8) of the courses the region offers, or get in a day of disc golf on an award-winning course! Courtesy of Poland Spring Golf Course

31

PLAN Your Trip

If you’re choosing to stay to play, plan ahead! Area hotels, inns, and bed and breakfasts are often fully booked in advance of the festivals, Dempsey Challenge, and for Bates graduation and alumni celebrations. If you’re flying to the region, consider a chartered flight to the Auburn Lewiston Airport, or head to Portland Jetport (PWM) and rent a car for your 30-minute drive. Major routes into Maine include I-95 from Boston (2.5 hours) and Route 1 along the coast. Situated within 35 miles of 60% of Maine’s population and close to the coast and mountains, the LA region is a great place to stay to play.

THINGS TO DO

Spotlight On WEDDINGS

MAKE MEMORIES Whether you and your sweetheart are looking to exchange vows in the heart of an urban downtown, amidst the rustic vibes of vintage barn décor in rolling fields, overlooking the Great Falls in the heart of the city, or in the historic craftsmanship of a church, our region has you covered. While there are many things to do when planning for an upcoming wedding, consider the following:

LODGING: Relationships know no distance, and accommodating your family, friends and wedding party is a must do! You will find 15+ hotels, inns, and lodging venues within 20 minutes of your ceremony or reception site, providing a relaxing, low-stress wedding trip for your guests. (continued page 34) 33

CEREMONY + RECEPTION: Wedding Barn? Second Largest Catholic Church in New England? Decommissioned church complete with LED lights and an overnight catacomb? Vineyard? Ballroom with views of the urban skyline and waterfall? We have your special day and unique style covered! Pick your vibe, and schedule your special day.

VENDORS: Our region offers florists, cake bakers, cookie makers, photographers, jewelers, and more. Stay the weekend and visit all of the vendors on your list, taste-testing and spot checking every aspect of your wedding ceremony and reception.

WELCOME OR FAREWELL BRUNCH: You no longer have to be limited to just the reception! Venues and lodging often provide discounted packages for continuing the celebration with your families and friends. If you are expecting a lot of out of town guests (or need a big place to meet up with your extended local family), consider a welcome event as people arrive or a farewell brunch before you set off on the honeymoon. Area restaurants and venues are happy to host you and yours.

34

Courtesy of Northeast Charter & Tour

TRANSPORTATION: Helping people navigate getting from their accommodations to the ceremony to the reception helps lower stress and increase the fun. Consider shuttle services for your guests to and from your ceremony, reception, and lodging venues. Consider quirky school buses, luxury coaches, and white trolleys! (continued page 36)

35

SWEET TREATS: Looking for something to welcome your guests in their rooms? Or considering an alternative to the cake? Offer a classic Maine Whoopie Pie baked in the heart of LA, a perfectly crafted dessert from the local bakery or cupcake shop, or local gourmet chocolates and candies as take-home treats for your dessert table.

Spotlight On OUTDOOR RECREATION

Mount Apatite Park This 325-acre wooded park is best known by rock hounds for yielding crystals of tourmaline and quartz. An extensive network of forested trails link abandoned quarries, gleaming slag piles, steep ledges, and giant boulders. Rock hounds have known about this area for over 150 years, when the first discoveries of gem-quality tourmaline were found. Today, amateurs may still search the mine tilling for apatite, tourmaline, and quartz specimens (special rules apply). The park is open year-round from dawn until dusk. Park brochures, which include a trail map, park rules, and other park information, are available at the Auburn Parks & Recreation Department office. Open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The park is located on Stevens Mills Road, Auburn. 44

As you drive east of the metropolitan region along Route 196, a major throughway, you will arrive in Lisbon. Lisbon is the birthplace of Moxie Soda and host to the annual Moxie Festival. Spotlight On LOCAL FOOD SCENE

Courtesy of Bates

The region has a vibrant regional local food culture, strengthened by a central location within the state that houses and connects farms and food producers to thriving markets. A longstanding agricultural history with farming heritage, passion, and knowledge eager to pass on to the next generation and some of the best soil in the state, as well as a growing, young, producer community made up of over a hundred farmers and food producers are vital to the local food economy. The direct producer to consumer outlets include city-wide farmers’ markets, farm stands, CSA (Community Sustainable Agriculture) opportunities, and family friendly, beloved agro-tourist destinations. term growth as laid out by the Local Foods Local Places Action Plan, which resulted from a 2019 community planning session of more than 80 stakeholders from across Lewiston Auburn’s producer, consumer, business, and municipal sectors. The plan, its continued progress, and ways to engage and support are available at the website of the Good Food Council of Lewiston-Auburn, goodfood4la.org.

Spotlight On

Wales + SAbattus

Wales and Sabattus are two towns north of the LA region, both acting as quiet, residential communities for employees in LA and Augusta. Sabattus is home to Willow Pond Farm, the first in Maine to offer CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares. The town’s agricultural roots are still part of the community’s identity today, where three sugar houses are open to the public on Maine Maple Sunday. Wales offers a pickyour-own pumpkin patch at nearby Seaman’s Farm. If quiet backroads and short commutes are the lifestyle you seek, these are the towns for you.

FREEPORT Home to LL Bean Only 20 minutes of Auburn, Freeport is a walkable town with outlet stores and LL Bean’s Flagship store, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. While Freeport is a shopper’s paradise and is considered the birthplace of Maine, it is also rich in history and immersed in culture to explore. The Desert of Maine is a unique opportunity to see a desert in Maine, with 30-acres of sand dunes that provide walking trails and historical tours — you can even pitch a tent and stay a while. Freeport is a working harbor, so visitors can dine on fresh lobster while watching the boats travel on the Harraseeket River. There are scenic ocean cruises, boat rentals, and tours to explore the tidal rivers and even take hikes with goats. Coupled with numerous fairs and festivals throughout the year and summer concerts in the park, Freeport is a great way to spend the day when staying in the LA region.

PORTLAND’S OLD PORT Maine’s Fishing Heritage The Old Port takes you back in time with cobblestone streets, 19thcentury warehouses, and a working wharf. Once a world-renowned port, the town offers some of Maine’s best dining experiences. The Old Port delivers something for everyone with daily brewery tours, the Portland Museum of Art, antiques, and shopping. On the must-do list is a visit to the Portland Head Light, the oldest lighthouse in Maine. You can experience a pub crawl with local tour guides, a Duck Tour on a land/sea bus that provides 60-minutes of legends and sightseeing tours, or venture out on a boat chartered for fishing, foodies, lighthouses, or even whale-watching tours. As night falls, the Old Port is just getting started with outside live entertainment, pubs, theme bars, comedy clubs, and dance clubs. For the truly adventurous, there is a walking tour dedicated to the Legends and History of a Haunted Old Port. If you’re a sports fan, come and root for one of the home teams — the Portland Sea Dogs (baseball), Maine Celtics (basketball), and Maine Mariners (hockey).

EXPLORE + DISCOVER Retirement.

With the amenities of a big city and only minutes from a country setting, the Lewiston Auburn region has much to offer those ready to settle into retirement. Along with affordable real estate markets and senior living communities, the area features dining and shopping options, beautiful places of worship, and first-class medical care. The region is centrally located, making for an easy drive to many of the state’s most popular locations. However, with plenty of culture and recreation opportunities in your own backyard, there is no need to travel far to experience some of Maine’s highlights. LA provides musical and theatrical performances through three venues; including The Gendron Franco Center, a performing arts organization that celebrates Franco-American heritage as well as cultures from around the world. The Maine Music Society is also housed at the Franco Center, and features the Maine Music Society Chorale, the Maine Music Society 96

Chamber Singers, and the professional players of the Maine Music Society Orchestra. In addition, the summer season brings the Auburn Community Band to Auburn’s outdoor festival plaza for a free concert every Wednesday night. Seasonal recreation includes the recently modernized Lost Valley Ski Area in the winter, while spring and summer bring opportunities such as golfing at the highly rated Fox Ridge Golf Club or Martindale Country Club. Or, if miniature golf better suits you, Taber’s Miniature Golf & Driving Range is the place to be. Boating, fishing, walking along the picturesque Auburn Riverwalk, or relaxing in one of LA’s many parks are also great ways to enjoy the outdoors. One event not to be missed is the Great Falls Balloon Festival, where every August thousands gather at Simard-Payne Memorial Park along the Androscoggin River to see dozens of colorful balloons fill the skies. LA is also home to four colleges, including Bates, one of America’s top liberal arts colleges. Bates brings arts to the community through The Olin Museum of Art which exhibits original works by regional, national, and international artists. The Bates Dance Festival is an annual

highlight, hosting a roster of international artists collaborating in creating and performing vibrant dances. For senior citizens that are interested in continuing education, USM Lewiston-Auburn College offers various Senior College courses. Other educational opportunities include SeniorsPlus, a nonprofit source for information and assistance, Auburn’s Senior Community Center, and two public libraries. With all that LA has to offer, it’s no wonder Forbes recently named Lewiston among the top 25 places to retire in America!
