n August of 2024, we shared the story of Ollie, a Maltese Shih Tzu Poodle mix from Richmond whose quick actions saved his family. Katie and Fonz Keenan, along with his fur sibling, Annie, remain deeply grateful to their beloved Ollie. His relentless barking woke them as the lower level of their home was engulfed with flames, and the fire was rapidly moving up the stairwell towards their bedroom.

Katie says Ollie is doing well today and is as sweet as ever, and she gives him full credit for the rescue: “Had Ollie not woken us up when he did, we’d all be dead.” Once awoken, Fonz escaped through their bedroom window to their secondstory deck, jumped down, grabbed a ladder, and helped the others exit

Hot Dog News Water Bark Wellness Reopens Under New Ownership After nearly a decade of helping dogs swim, exercise and heal, Water Bark Wellness is back with a new owner, a new location and an expanded vision for the future.

Mimi Rasmussen has reopened the business under the name Water Bark Wellness and Play, bringing a brandnew facility and a larger 17-by-37.5foot pool to the Midcoast. The new location offers a quiet, rural setting and more space for future offerings.

Rasmussen plans to eventually add year-round dock diving practice to the list of services.

The original Water Bark Wellness was founded by Kate Griffin in January 2016. Griffin operated the business until August 2025, when she decided to sell the business. She is excited to see Rasmussen carry the business forward.

“I am thrilled about having passed the leash to Mimi,” said Griffin. “She has an exciting vision and will take WBW to the next level! The Midcoast is really lucky. I wish her all the best!”

Rasmussen says the new facility is designed to welcome dogs of all sizes and breeds, including senior dogs and dogs who may benefit from swimming for exercise, mobility or rehabilitation.

Veterinary clearance is required, with safety being the top priority.

impact form of exercise that helps dogs build and maintain muscle, mobility and range of motion. The buoyancy of the water allows dogs to exercise with less stress on their joints, while some dogs may simply benefit from being supported in the water rather than swimming.

Rasmussen also sees swimming as a great way for dogs to enjoy some mental stimulation—and, of course, have fun.

“I will try my best to provide the same great service Kate offered, at the same rates, but with some expansion to what we can offer,” Rasmussen said.

Water Bark Wellness and Play is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with additional hours available when needed. Weekend birthday parties and Gotcha Day celebrations are also available, including pupcakes for the four-legged guests.

Rasmussen is especially excited about using the new space to support other local pet businesses and animal organizations. Future offerings may include nail clinics, massage, MagnaWave sessions and meet-andgreets with rescues and shelters.

“Rescue is so important to me,” Rasmussen said. “Networking and exposure is how these pups find their

forever homes.”

Rasmussen currently fosters for 3 Dogs Rescue in Berwick, which she credits with bringing three of her best canine friends into her life.

The Maine Dog Rescue a 501(c)(3) foster-based nonprofit is hosting Paws for a Cause on Sunday, September 20, at The Village Inn in Belgrade.

The fundraiser will feature a live dogtraining Q&A with Sara Sokol of Mr. Dog Training, appetizers and a large raffle.

Proceeds will support the rescue’s goal of creating a dedicated kennel and transitional living space for dogs in need.

From the Publisher Dear Dog News Readers, We hope you are enjoying the last of your 2026 summer days. It always goes so quickly, but for me, it has felt super fast!

Pepper has logged a few more swims at the lake. I have to really pace her now because, at 12 years old, she still wants to keep going but needs to rest in between. She is really tired afterward and even for part of the next day.

With that said, we are really excited that the new Water Bark Wellness has opened in Union with an even bigger pool! Just in time for our post-summer swim routine. We can’t wait to check out the new facility and meet Mimi, the owner.

Don Hanson’s column this month is about being a good neighbor. This is something that is really important, and everyone should read it. If you have been reading my letter regularly, you may know that Pepper is now reactive to other dogs after having a bad experience at a dog park, and she is now scared of them. I find it infuriating when people don’t follow leash rules in public. It is unsafe for both dogs and people.

I have witnessed dog scuffles at the farmers market two weekends in a row because people have decided their dog doesn’t need to be leashed.

Let’s make the most of these last days of summer and be mindful of the people and pets around us so we can all enjoy them safely.

Finn the dog. Finnzo, Finner, Finnbone, Finnegan, Finny. Dearly beloved high desert pup who made his way to Maine to learn about the highs and lows of living by the sea. A lover of long hikes, life on the farm in New Mexico, his family and friends, Finn spent his years delighting in time spent outside adventuring. He loved peanut butter, pup cups and treats of many varieties. Always up for a walk he was a steady companion who wasn't afraid to share his opinion. He was a handsome cattle dog who found his rhythm along the coast alongside Marjory.

He is missed daily and is likely off wagging his tail into a desert sunset.

When I sat down to write

this column, I put a call out on the Sara Moore Enlightened Horizons Facebook page for submissions. To say I was stunned to realize it was for September is an understatement!

Where did August go? Mine was spent packing, moving, getting a hip replacement, and navigating around our four dogs who wondered what the heck was happening! It feels good knowing that I’ll have this month to ease into the first whisps of Autumn. Just a reminder that psychic insight is never a replacement for licensed veterinary care, so please talk with your vet before making any medical decisions! Enjoy!

Diane W. just wanted to check in with her four-year-old French Bulldog Ed. First of all, he LOVES his

name and thinks it’s unique! He is so picky with treats, but when you find the right one that’s the only one he wants. I’m seeing something made with sweet potato, but it really tastes like cardboard. LOL! He says if the label says it’s healthy, it’ll do. I don’t think he can handle junk food… I see loose bowels if he eats it. I don’t know if you ever watched The Office, but there’s an episode where Dwight and Michael do parkour. Look it up because your dog says he’s better than them at it and loves bouncing off things when he gets the zoomies.

Cindy S. said, “Did I make the right decision to let our Golden Retriever Bailee go?” I had the biggest urge to exhale when I read your question.

She was relieved, and her energy was so low that it was your only viable option. She is grateful and wishes you could feel her energy around! She’s trying to say hello! I’m also seeing a white daisy, which she thinks is as pure and simple as she was.

Daniele B. lost her three-year-old Renley when he was euthanized for biting someone who walked through

her door unannounced. “The last thing I told him was I’ll be back to get you buddy. I just want him to know I truly meant what I said and hope he forgives me and is okay.” I’m so sorry you're still carrying the hurt of this, and he is so excited to have a chance to chat with you! He’s fantastic and never ever held it against you, never will. He’s showing me a red popsicle?

I see you closing your eyes and asking for the pain of the memory to be lessened. You always did right by him, and he wants you to heal.

It is difficult for both the human and the dog to adjust to a new schedule, environment, and new people. It happens when we kennel him when we go on vacation or when their favorite companion goes off to school, starts a new life through new jobs, or marriage.

As always, it is best to plan ahead.

When the home environment is solid with everyone involved with the wellbeing of the family dog, the transition will be easier. If all the responsibility of the physical and emotional wellbeing is on one person, the transition can be problematic.

There is the rule of 3’s to help dogs transition to a new routine and, or environment. This is 3 days of decompression, 3 weeks of learning new routines, and 3 months to feel secure. The rule of 3’s isn’t cast in

stone but a guideline to help you understand where your dog is at in the process. Some will move through these stages quickly and others may take longer. It is all dependent on your pup’s environment, emotional and mental makeup.

Let’s start with the family dog who is involved with everyone. There can be one primary person he is with most, however, there is a broader foundation to draw on. Start early to vary the routine. If walking the dog

is dependent on one family member, start rotating the human walking the dog. These are not power walks but sniff walks. The distance and time can be varied. If Sis usually walks Lucky, but she will be leaving, then assign someone else. It can be Dad after work while Mom makes dinner, or a bedtime walk that is short. We want Lucky to get sniff walks because it tires him out more and is more fulfilling than long power walks. The family pup will be in a better frame of mind when the change happens.

Feeding is an easier fix. When the designated feeder is leaving, change it to someone else with a similar schedule. When that is impossible, start changing feeding time slowly by 15-minute increments until they fit the new schedule. Playing with him can be done using enrichment toys and smelling games or hide and seek. Where he sleeps doesn’t need to change, especially if he is crate trained or knows to go to his bed, mat, or what he normally sleeps on.

Keeping the bedtime ritual will help for a calm sleep. No one should make a big deal when they leave or come home, especially the person going away. The dog will feel leaving and coming home is not a big deal and won’t worry about it so there is less anxiety.

What if you have only one person in the family who has all the responsibilities in the care and well-being of Lucky. Decisions of care needs to be made months in advanced. It is likely multiple family members will need to take over the duties to keep the dog happy. In busy families, have one or two people take on feeding him and the same with exercise and playing. If time is tight, sniff games are great for high energy pups. All of these schedule changes and routines need to start early so the dog can adjust along with the family. The key person is still involved, but it is shared time not always alone time.

The most concerning situation is a dog that is so attached and sensitive to the loss of his person that he starts acting out when that person is gone (separation anxiety) or becomes ill. Working with your veterinarian, animal behaviorist, and a veterinary homeopath can help.

There may be drugs, nutritional and herbal supplements, homeopathic medicines, and behavioral exercises that can help.

HOMETOWN from page 1 safely. Inspired by both Ollie and the American Humane Society Hero Dog Awards DDN launched the inaugural Hometown Hero Awards to celebrate the extraordinary dogs and people making a difference across Maine.

We received four heartfelt nominations, and rather than limiting our recognition, we decided to honor them all, individually, over the coming months. The Hero Honorees are very dedicated in their own ways: one through dog training, advocacy, and a groundbreaking scent study, another two for shelter/rescue work and fostering, and one who shares her best bud through therapy work. Follow their stories in the next several editions and join us in applauding their community service.

Hero Honoree Melissa McCue‑McGrath Melissa McCue‑McGrath, PACTATI / ABTC-ATI, Author / Educator, is the first Hero Honoree, and she was nominated by Beth Higgins: “Melissa McCue‑McGrath is the kind of person who makes Maine feel like home as a true Mainer does. She helps dogs who are struggling to find confidence again. She helps families understand their pets with compassion and clarity.” Beth, who has trained under Melissa added, “She brings humor, heart, and deep expertise to every training session.”

Melissa didn’t aspire to be a dog trainer. At 18, she headed to Lake Erie College in northeastern Ohio for a premier Equestrian Program. She longed to be a horse trainer and work with Veterans utilizing Therapeutic Horsemanship. Six weeks into the program, she was bucked off a horse.

As she lay in the mud in pain, she thought, “What am I going to do?”

(That pain was a spinal injury that took doctors a year to diagnose and properly treat.)

Undeterred, Melissa switched programs, completed her studies there, and earned her B.S. of Psychology in 2003. After college, she moved to Boston, Massachusetts, and decided to adopt a shelter puppy named Sadie. Fate intervened when she met a dog trainer who asked her to work with him as an intern of sorts. Everything clicked…she applied her psychology to dogs and obtained all her certifications. “I never looked

back, I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Melissa served as the co-Training Director of New England Dog Training Club (the oldest AKC Obedience club in the country) for 11 years before moving to southern Maine. She then served as a behavior consultant and dog trainer at the Animal Welfare Society, AWS, in Kennebunk until earlier this year.

She decided to expand her own professional dog training endeavors, saying she enjoys reactivity cases, sports work like disc, and scent work.

The scent work she trains dogs on is for fun. (No scenting for bombs or explosives — she leaves that to experts.) Scenting is stimulating and natural for dogs: they have up to 300 million scent receptors, compared to humans' 5 million.

A New Direction in Scent Work In 2023, Melissa’s interest in scent work took an unexpected turn when Virginia Tech and Texas Tech launched a joint study focused on detecting and controlling the invasive spotted lanternfly, or SLF, which can damage plants and vegetation.

The study’s goal was straightforward: train volunteer teams of family dogs and handler/ owners to detect hidden SLF egg masses using dead SLF eggs, which retain their scent. With their superior sense of smell, the dogs would lead handlers to the nests. The handlers would then remove the egg masses with a flat card, place them in a bag filled with rubbing alcohol, and help prevent infestation.

The universities reached out through nose work channels, inviting interested handlers to a Zoom session about the national study. After learning about the SLF’s potential impact, Melissa quickly recognized the threat it could pose to Maine. Hardwood and fruit trees, crops, hops, vines, and other plants could all be damaged, with serious consequences for the state’s economy. Intrigued by the project and eager to help protect Maine, she joined the call. She felt the organizers anticipated a small group of perhaps twenty people. Instead, nearly 2,000 tried to log in, overwhelming the meeting platform and forcing the colleges to reschedule with an expanded capacity.

Once she decided to give it a go, Melissa reached out to dog owners who had taken scent classes at AWS. She had many interested parties, so

she applied with her “Maine Six” to take part in the study. Her own dog, Captain Love, was part of the group with her then 11-year-old daughter, Ace, serving as his handler. (Today Captain Love is 13 and serves as an educational dog, showing off his SLF scent skills at events.)

She was both flattered and surprised when they were selected for the second cohort group in November of 2023, especially because the SLF had not yet been found in Maine. They were slated to begin in January of 2024, and the study required the dogs to become fluent in the SLF scent within the fourteen-week training window.

Melissa was provided mesh scent packets containing flash-frozen SLF eggs to simulate real egg masses, so her “Maine Six” could begin their journey.

They group no idea of the amount of time, challenges, and dedication required to complete through the required steps of the controlled setting. Over the fourteen weeks, the areas studied and tested on were odor recognition, field tests, and distance that the canines could detect the SLF. Unfortunately, one dog had to be pulled due to anxiety, another for illness. The remaining four passed the criteria expected. (The two who dropped out did go through the tests later and passed!)

Melissa’s “Maine Six” contributed data supporting the universities’ hypothesis that pet dogs, guided

by their handlers, can be trained to detect invasive spotted lanternflies.

The broader study also confirmed that family dogs can learn to find SLF egg masses by scent.

Melissa was excited to take part in what she called a “cool project” that supports this scientific research. She has since added the SLF scent to her nose work classes and, including the “Maine Six,” has trained 25 family dogs to detect the invasive species.

Beth summed up her friend: “What could just be a room full of strangers and their dogs turns into a genuine community…She lifts people up. She makes dogs’ lives better.

She strengthens our community.

Melissa is exactly what a Hometown Hero looks like.” DDN celebrates her contributions to Maine, and those who she serves.

More Than Puppy Playdates

O

ne of the most common things people hear about when raising a dog is socialization. Socialization is gently introducing your puppy or dog to new experiences. But simply exposing them to new things isn't enough. The goal is to make sure those experiences are positive, meaning the dog is happy and enjoying it. Positive experiences help build confidence instead of fear.

Puppies have what is called a “socialization window.” During this time, they are like little sponges, soaking up everything around them and being especially open to new experiences. This window usually closes between 3 and 4 months of age. Giving your puppy lots of positive experiences during this time can help him grow into a confident, well-rounded adult dog.

Before your puppy comes home, the breeder or caretaker should already be helping with this process. Puppies should be exposed to different surfaces to walk on, everyday sounds, new objects, and a variety of people. These early experiences help prepare them for the world.

Once your puppy comes home, it's your job to keep that process going. When most people hear the word "socialization," they think it means letting their puppy play with other dogs. While that can be an important part of socialization, it's only one piece of the puzzle.

Proper socialization also means introducing your puppy to different places, people, sights, sounds, and everyday experiences. In my opinion, this is even more important than teaching basic commands during your first few weeks together. You have your dog's whole life to teach skills like sit, down, and stay. But you only have a short window to take advantage of puppy socialization.

If you've adopted an older dog who is past the socialization window, don't worry. You can still help him become more comfortable with the world. Older dogs may need more time, more space, and a slower pace as they learn that new experiences are safe.

Let’s break down what socialization looks like. Keeping the experiences positive will likely include the use of favorite treats or toys.

Types of People Let your dog approach at his own pace, IF and when he wants to.

Make sure your puppy is exposed positively to at least 100 different people before 4 months old.

Consider sitting with your puppy and watching people from afar.

Not every outing needs to result in greeting every person. Don’t forget to reward and look for calm behavior during these interactions.

Infants who rarely move are often more tolerated than a baby who is crawling or learning to walk.

Toddlers are loud and unpredictable to a puppy or young dog and can be scary.

Socialization isn't just for puppies.

It's something that should continue throughout your dog's life. The world is always teaching your dog, even when you're not actively training. Whether you just brought home an 8-week-old puppy or adopted a 1-year-old dog, continuing to give him positive experiences will help him feel more confident and better able to handle whatever life brings his way.

Behavior Medications: What They Can and Cannot Do

hen medication is recommended for a behavior problem, many caregivers hesitate. These are medications people recognize. Many have taken fluoxetine or something similar themselves, or know someone who has, and that experience comes into the exam room with them. The result is a set of very common questions and a few very common misunderstandings.

What do behavior medications actually do?

Behavior medications target EMOTIONAL STATES. They do not target personality.

The goal is not to change who your dog is. The goal is to change how your dog feels. We are working to reduce fear, reduce frustration, and reduce panic in situations your dog currently cannot cope with. The playful, affectionate dog you know does not disappear. In most cases, when the fear comes down, more of that dog is available to you, not less.

Will my dog be sedated?

Sedation is not the goal of a daily behavior medication. Some dogs are mildly sleepy during the first few days to a week, and this is usually short

term. If your dog is still groggy beyond that point, the dose or the medication may not be the right fit and may need to be adjusted. This is also why these medications are often started at a low dose and increased slowly rather than started at the target dose.

A dog who appears flat, dull, or heavily sedated is not a dog on a working plan. Report this to your veterinarian.

Are these medications safe?

Many of these medications were developed for people. That does not mean their use in dogs is guesswork. There is a large body of research behind the medications used in veterinary behavior, including fluoxetine, clomipramine, venlafaxine, trazodone, and clonidine. Fluoxetine and clomipramine are FDA approved for use in dogs, as is dexmedetomidine gel for noise aversion. The others are used extra-label, which is common and accepted in veterinary medicine when the use is supported by evidence. The doses and dosing intervals come from that literature.

Most of these medications are also safe for long-term use, including use in dogs with other medical conditions.

What is required is a physical exam and screening blood work before starting and recheck exams and blood work on a regular basis afterward.

Will medication fix the behavior?

No. Medication is one part of a treatment plan, not the whole treatment plan.

Behavior changes when three things happen together. Management reduces your dog's exposure to the triggers, which slows the progression of the behavior and stops your dog from rehearsing it every day. Training builds new foundational behaviors, and behavior modification teaches new coping skills and changes the underlying emotional response. Medication makes all of this possible.

Why is medication needed at all?

Because a dog who is fearful, frantic, or flooded with frustration cannot relax, focus, or learn. The thinking brain is not available. Medication increases learning potential, and learning is what changes behavior long term. Many caregivers have worked hard for months with no

progress, and the problem was not effort. Their dog was not able to learn because emotion was blocking the learning process.

How quickly will it work?

That depends on which type of medication is being used, and there are two.

Event, or situational, medications are given ahead of a stressful event that can be predicted but not avoided: fireworks, thunderstorms, veterinary visits, grooming, car rides. These are usually given about thirty to ninety minutes beforehand and work that same day. At home trial doses can help determine which medication to use, the dose, when to give it, and whether there are any side effects.

Maintenance medications are given daily. These are for dogs whose triggers cannot be reliably identified, predicted, or avoided, and for dogs who are not improving with behavior modification alone. They take time. Some changes may be noticeable in two to three weeks, but full effect commonly takes six to eight weeks. Some dogs need both types.

Because of this timeline, plan on a real trial of about six months with checkpoints along the way. If nothing has changed by three to four weeks, the dose may be adjusted. If this

When the Time Comes: Planning Ahead for Your Pet’s Final Goodbye Talking about the eventual loss of a beloved pet is never easy. We tend to focus on giving our animals the best possible lives, not on what happens at the end of those lives.

But because our pets are such an important part of our families, thinking about these difficult decisions before they become urgent can be a loving gift to both them and ourselves.

Knowing When It’s Time One of the most difficult decisions a pet parent may face is determining when a pet’s quality of life has declined to the point where euthanasia is the kindest choice. Paying attention to changes in eating, drinking, mobility, pain, energy and interest in favorite activities can help. Keeping a simple daily journal can also make patterns easier to recognize and help you have a more informed conversation with your veterinarian.

Having a conversation with your veterinarian before your pet reaches a crisis point can also be helpful. Ask what changes in your pet’s condition you should watch for and what signs may indicate that their quality of life is declining.

Planning ahead can make it easier to focus on your pet when the time comes.

You may also want to consider where you would prefer euthanasia to take place. Some families choose a veterinary hospital, while others prefer the familiarity and privacy of an at-home appointment.

Whichever you choose, familiar surroundings, favorite blankets, toys and the people your pet loves can provide comfort.

It’s also worth thinking about who you would like to be present.

Family members, including children, may have different needs and wishes, and there is no single right choice. The most important thing is choosing what feels right for you, your family and your pet.

Thinking About Aftercare Aftercare is another decision that can be made ahead of time.

Options may include burial, communal cremation, private cremation or aquamation, also known as water cremation.

Aquamation uses water, warmth and alkalinity to gently accelerate the natural decomposition process and is considered environmentally friendly.

If you choose cremation, you can often make arrangements directly with a pet crematory.

Depending on the service, your pet may be transported from your veterinarian’s office or home, or you may choose to handle transportation yourself.

It can also be helpful to ask your veterinarian or crematory ahead of time what to expect after your pet’s passing, including how transportation will be handled and how and when you will receive your pet’s ashes or other keepsakes.

Knowing these details in advance means you won't have to make as many decisions while you're grieving.

Allowing Yourself to Grieve The loss of a pet can bring tremendous grief, and there is no single “right” way to experience it.

Our relationships with our animals are deeply personal, and it is perfectly normal to feel sadness, loneliness or even anger after they are gone.

There is also no set timeline for grieving a pet. Give yourself permission to remember, talk about and miss your companion for as long as you need. Surrounding yourself with people who

understand the significance of your loss can help. Pet loss support groups, books, counselors and other resources are also available for those who need additional support.

Don’t forget about the pets who remain at home. Dogs and other animals may notice the absence of a companion and show changes in their behavior, appetite or routine.

Maintaining familiar routines and giving them extra attention can help them adjust.

Creating a Lasting Tribute For many people, creating a lasting tribute becomes an important part of healing. A professional pet photography session can preserve the special relationship you share while your pet is still with you. Afterward, there are countless ways to honor that bond and celebrate your pet’s life.

A memorial service, donation to an animal organization, scrapbook, poem or obituary can provide meaningful ways to celebrate a pet’s life. Portraits, custom artwork and memorial jewelry can also provide lasting reminders. Some artists create jewelry using a small portion of your pet’s ashes, allowing you to carry a meaningful reminder of them with you.

If your pet was cremated, there are also beautiful urns and other keepsakes designed to hold their ashes. Some people choose to scatter the ashes in a location that held special meaning for them and their pet. Paw prints and nose prints can also become treasured mementos and may be incorporated into artwork, jewelry

Training Your Performance Dog Agility, Obedience, Tracking

Building Confidence in Agility Dogs

I

n agility, we want our dogs to run at full speed and make correct choices based upon information from the handler. The first thing we must realize is that most errors in performance occur because of bad handling, late handling, or lack of handling. Dogs that are criticized for making the wrong choices start to lose confidence. They stress down or up because they thought they made the right choice and then found out that they were wrong. Having someone watch you or video you can really help you see that you may be giving your dog incorrect information or incongruent information as to which obstacle he should perform or

what turn you want him to make.

Repeating failed performances only to have them fail again can really undermine a dog’s confidence. This can result in a dog starting to refuse obstacles – “if I just don’t do it, then maybe I won’t be wrong.” Then we criticize the dog for not performing and now we are creating an even bigger confidence problem.

There are some agility venues that do not count refusals and allow you

to continue to try and get your dog over the jump. Repeatedly trying an obstacle that has been missed is seldom a good idea. It is much better to go on and enjoy the run and think about how you could have handled the obstacle with more clarity so your dog could have been successful.

Sometimes dogs do not take the correct obstacle because other obstacles have been made more valuable to them. Table, A frame, and weaves usually pay much more than jumps and pick-ups. We begin to expect and assume our dogs will jump and come to pick-ups. To keep these behaviors strong, we must variably reward for them. You never know when a pick-up or jump could pay “big time”. When was the last time you paid your dog for setting up brightly at the start? Success and the ultimate reward the dog is looking for builds confidence. Concentrating for an entire course takes mental stamina and is harder for some dogs than others and needs to be developed.

Longer courses can be damaging to confidence especially when there are not enough rewards along the way.

Timely praise is important because it will tell your dog that he is right and eventually will be rewarded.

Nagging and pushing the dog on the course can lead to shut down.

Dogs learn how to stop the nagging voice by stopping their work. Many

inexperienced handlers at this point will take out food or a toy to get the dog to continue to work. So, now shut down pays!

Some dogs enjoy agility because they like the obstacles. These dogs get “high” on running and jumping and usually need rewards to maintain focus. Other dogs like agility because they like the reward they get for doing the obstacles. Obstacles need to be made to be valuable for this type of dog. The jumps, contacts, weaves, etc. all must signify potential reward sites to keep these dogs working and enjoying their work.

If we put pressure on the dog, criticize mistakes, and make the courses harder and longer, the game is no longer fun and even rewards are not worth the work for some dogs.

We need to build confidence in our dogs and go back and make things simpler if they are losing confidence.

Remember - success builds confidence. So set your dog up for success and watch the confidence build!

Being neighborly is simply being

friendly, kind, and considerate to those in your community.

Considering there are approximately 90 million dogs and 134 million households in the US, the odds of you having a neighbor with a dog are high. Whether you love dogs or dislike them, it is essential that we all get along and be neighborly.

Unneighborly Cases 1 & 2 A friend with a new rescue dog was taking his dog for a walk in his neighborhood when a neighbor’s dog charged out of a yard into the street and began barking and lunging at my friend and his nowvery-frightened dog.

An elderly woman is afraid to walk on her own street because one of her neighbor’s dogs has charged her many times. She is afraid to take a walk in her own neighborhood.

That is unacceptable.

The owners of the dogs in the incidents above were not only failing to be good neighbors but also failing their dogs, and, most seriously, threatening public safety and violating the law.

Maine "Dogs at Large" Rule (7 M.R.S. § 3911) - Definition: It is illegal for any dog to be "at large," which means off the owner's property and not under the control of a person whose presence and attention reasonably control the dog.

In both cases. The dogs charged off their property in the presence of their owners and had to be physically returned by them.

Therefore, the dogs were clearly “at large” and not under reasonable control. Also, under (7 M.R.S. § 3907(12-D)) both dogs could be considered to be a “dangerous dog” (A dog that causes a reasonable and prudent person (who is legally present in a public or nontrespassing area and acting in a nonaggressive manner) to fear imminent

If someone believes a dog could cause them or his dog serious bodily injury and reports it to the police, the threatening dog may be legally declared dangerous.

If you have a reactive dog, you have a responsibility to keep the community safe by keeping your dog on a leash or by ensuring your dog is contained by a secure, escape-proof enclosure on your property. A reactive dog is suffering emotionally, and you also have a responsibility to seek treatment from a veterinary behaviorist or

veterinarian to help your dog feel better.

Unneighborly Case 3 In the example below, the person with the reactive dogs is on public property.

A client who was walking his puppy in one of Bangor’s parks was charged by two large, off-leash dogs, and their “owner” was at least 100 feet away, casually approaching while his dogs were lunging and growling at the puppy and her guardian.

The owner of these two dogs was also in violation of Maine's "Dogs at Large" Rule (7 M.R.S. § 3911), as both dogs were off-leash and out of control. A good neighbor would have kept both of their dogs on a leash, as they were in a public space.

They would have also sought help for their clearly unsettled dogs.

Always ask before approaching or petting any dog, and if the person with the dogs declines your interaction, accept it and cheerfully move on. If they do accept your offer to let you interact with the dog, remain stationary and allow the dog to decide if he wishes to approach you.

The booms and bright flashes of fireworks can be extremely distressing to many people, pets, and wildlife. The neighborly thing to do is to forgo fireworks at your home. Instead, go to the fireworks display put on by your community.

Rescue of the Month GRAMMY ROSE RESCUE & SANCTUARY

By Susan Spisak Grammy Rose Rescue & Sanctuary, Inc. in Acton saves adoptable dogs from euthanasia and provides them with quality care in a unique, homelike environment while helping them find forever families. The Sanctuary sits on a large campus with a Welcome Center, an Adoption Center, and six log canine cabins for dogs awaiting adoption. Each comfortable cabin gives dogs a safe place to decompress, reset, and heal.

With areas that resemble a real home, the cabins also help dogs adjust more quickly to family life. Grammy Rose is a temporary stop, but a welcoming haven, where dogs can recover while waiting for the right match.

Founded in 2021, they have rescued 1858 dogs—and 602 last year, shared Executive Director Amanda Boileau. She runs this extraordinary sanctuary with the campus manager

and staff. Amanda shared they routinely bring dogs in from the south, as well as the islands of Puerto Rico, St Thomas, St. Lucia, and the Bahamas. Recently they brought up twenty-two dogs from Louisiana and three from West Virginia.

The rescue honors Grammy Rose, also known as Rose Kessler Wentworth, whose zest for life and love of animals, especially dogs, were legendary. She spoiled her dogs so much that she made them scrambled eggs every week. While this Maine project was still taking shape, the privately funded effort took a creative turn. A descendant of Grammy Rose and her husband, both fellow pet lovers, learned about Our Companions Animal Rescue, a sanctuary with cabins for dogs. They shared details of that successful model with the Acton group, who adapted it to fit their own needs.

There are 63 acres of surrounding

land with trails and play areas. And to honor Grammy Rose’s ice-cream loving husband, Ralph Wentworth, they named their popular on-campus ice cream parlor and 18 hole mini-golf course Wicky Ralph’s Ice Cream & Mini-Golf. They knew Ralph deserved this honor—besides being a real “character,” he was a Veteran with the Army National Guard, volunteered to go to France during WWI, was wounded twice, and was awarded two Purple Hearts. BEHAVIOR from page 7 adjustment does not help, a different medication may be considered. A dog should not be labeled a medication failure after only ten days.

Will my dog be on medication forever?

Not necessarily. Many dogs are eventually weaned off. The dogs most likely to come off are those whose caregivers followed through with management and behavior modification, and who stayed on the medication long enough for real change to occur. That usually means at least six months, sometimes a year, before weaning is discussed.

These medications are never stopped abruptly or on your own.

Weaning is done gradually, generally by reducing the dose by about twenty-five percent every one to two weeks.

Some dogs do stay on medication for life. This is a good outcome, not a failure. When a dog has an ongoing, pathological reason for the behavior, long-term treatment is a welfare decision.

Is my dog too young?

There is no age limit. Puppies as

young as twelve weeks have been started on medication when the situation warranted it, and there is nothing in the literature advising against it. Starting early can actually extend the window of neuroplasticity, giving a fearful puppy more opportunity to form positive associations, and the earlier medication is started, the better the chance of weaning later.

Who should be prescribing?

Your veterinarian. Prescribing requires an examination, a working diagnosis, and an understanding of how these medications work and what their potential adverse effects are. Trainers can be excellent partners in carrying out a behavior modification plan, but diagnosing a behavior problem and choosing a medication is veterinary medicine.

Waiting has a cost. Every week a fearful or reactive dog rehearses the behavior, that behavior becomes better established and harder to change. Dogs do not just get over it, and fear does not resolve on its own.

If emotion is blocking your dog's ability to learn, medication can be part of the treatment, not a last resort.

The rescue hopes to create a temporary, home-like space where dogs can safely stay while a suitable forever home is found. The ultimate goal is to be able to tell a family facing the difficult decision to rehome their dog, “We have a safe place for them.”

Grammy Rose Dog Rescue & Sanctuary has been selected as the September nonprofit beneficiary of the Hannaford Community Bag Program at the Hannaford located at 800 Main Street in Sanford, Maine.

Throughout the month of September, Grammy Rose will receive a $1 donation for every $2.50 Community Bag purchased at the Sanford store. The program allows Hannaford shoppers to support organizations making a difference in their own communities while choosing a durable, reusable alternative to single-use bags.

“We are incredibly grateful to Hannaford for selecting Grammy Rose Dog Rescue and giving our community such a great way to be part of our mission,” said Rianna Lane, Media & Community Relations Manager at Grammy Rose Dog Rescue & Sanctuary. “One bag may feel like a small purchase, but when an entire community gets behind something, those dollars add up. Every bit of support helps us continue welcoming dogs in need to Maine, caring for them while they’re with us, and helping them find the loving homes they deserve.”

Each month, leadership at participating Hannaford stores selects a local nonprofit to benefit from Community Bag purchases, with the selected organization featured at the reusable bag rack throughout its benefiting month. The program is designed to support organizations within each store’s regional community.

For Grammy Rose, the partnership provides another opportunity for the community to play a direct role in

giving dogs a fresh start.

Community members who would like to participate can visit the Hannaford at 800 Main Street in Sanford anytime during September and purchase a $2.50 Community Bag. For every bag purchased, $1 will be donated to Grammy Rose Dog Rescue & Sanctuary.

“Whether someone adopts, volunteers, attends an event, shares one of our dogs on social media, or picks up a reusable bag while buying groceries, it all connects back to the same thing: a community coming together to give dogs another chance,” Lane said. “We hope to see a lot of Community Bags leaving Sanford Hannaford this September!”
