ric “Rick” Marston, a lifelong Mainer, passed away in January of this year. He was not only a treasured member of the Bridgton community, but a beloved family man and dog dad. Rick’s longtime friend, Nate Sunday, Tasteful Things co-owner with wife Carole Sunday, declared that this delightful character was an absolute town legend—not only was he chatty and funny, but he was well-known as the guy who rode his motorcycle with canine co-pilots.

Samantha “Sam” Thompson, Rick and Peggy Marston’s granddaughter, knows her gramps was special to the family and well-respected by the community. He served in the Air Force and was a security dog handler. Sam said her gramps was

A Happy Ending for Jedi: A Rescue Dog Finds His Forever Home Through Downeast Dog News

We often don’t know when a dog featured in Downeast Dog News finds their forever home, and that’s understandable—rescues are incredibly busy caring for animals and helping them find the families they deserve.

On Monday, July 13, we received an email from Safe Harbor Sanctuary sharing some wonderful news: Jedi had been adopted, and his new family found him through our newspaper. It was such a heartwarming way to start our week!

From time to time, we collaborate with Danielle Travers of Soul Friends Fur-tography to spotlight dogs who have been waiting longer than expected for their forever homes. Danielle finds these deserving dogs and captures their personalities through her beautiful photography, which we then share with our readers.

We typically partner with a sponsor who helps make these features possible. In addition to helping cover the costs, a portion of the sponsorship is donated back to a rescue organization. For Jedi’s feature, our generous sponsor was Waggerstown in Wells. We extend our heartfelt thanks to them for helping give Jedi the extra attention he needed.

From the Publisher Dear Dog News Readers, We hope you are enjoying your summer and finding ways to keep cool. Pepper has enjoyed a few swims in the lake. On days when I need to work in the yard and we can’t make it to the lake, I put water in her pool instead. She's so cute to watch because she likes to jump in and out while I'm filling it, then slowly eases herself into the water because it is likely cold. Before long, I look over and find her happily rolling around on her back in the grass.

She loves being outside, so when I'm mowing or working in the garden, I tie her to a long line beneath our big cedar tree. I spread out a blanket for her, and she spends her time moving between the sun and the shade, hopping in and out of her pool to cool off. As I drive by on the lawnmower, she watches me, and I can't help but wonder what she's thinking.

"Well, here she comes again."

My father affectionately refers to Pepper as his granddogger so for Father’s Day I got him a t-shirt with her photo on it that says “My Granddogger Pepper.” I knew he’d probably get a kick out of that and that he did!

As I have mentioned many times, Pepper likes most veggies and stands by when anyone is preparing a salad or chopping vegetables. She even likes lettuce but is particular about the lettuce she will eat. She seems to prefer the curly baby lettuce, like Little Leaf Farm. We now refer to this type of lettuce as “Pepper lettuce” I tried to give her a piece from our garden and she quickly spit it out. I don’t know if it has a slightly more bitter taste or is not crunchy enough. Only Pepper knows!

Hello everyone! July was crazy

but in the best ways possible. I finally got some time in the pool, romped the fields to the stream with our four dogs, vacuumed more dog hair than I thought possible, and blasted the air conditioning when they were panting while simply sitting in the living room. I put the call out on the Sara Moore Enlightened Horizons Facebook page for your questions and once again you didn’t disappoint. It’s not all the time spirits hang around as much as these two, but they lived the dream with you and will be there to guide you home when your day comes many years from now, so don’t panic!

feels tired and his neck feels sore to me, but beyond that I hear, “Love me up.” You’re doing a good job monitoring his activity level based on his energy.

Kristy H. has Cinder and Queenie, both Pomeranians. “I want to know how they feel about going

to doggie visitations with their dad and if they’re okay when they come home. We’re going through a divorce.” They feel psyched to be at both of your houses, and when they come home to you, they are exhausted but super content. It feels like he’s spending good time with them and loving them up! They fall out of their routine while there, but they’re not complaining about it. You’re also being asked to stop worrying about them, so you can enjoy your life more fully! It’s all working out divinely is what I’m hearing verbatim.

Mandi H. wants to know how they can help Colton feel better. They sent a picture of him sleeping on his side. I’m hearing the Toby Keith song that says about how he’s as good once as he ever was, but he’s older and feeling it. My back left leg feels sore, more on the quad area than the hip. It honestly feels like you’ve done all the mitigation techniques (his words, not mine), and he’s as good as he’s going to be. When you’re doing something he used to love but can’t do right now, he just tunes it all out.

Lisa V. asked if Kodiak, Loki, and Molly wanted a pool and ice cream. I

love this question! Kodiak says stay in your lane; they’re fine with what they have. Loki would like a pool and ice cream, preferably in a big lower rimmed bowl and without you holding it. Molly said heck no to a pool, heck yes to ice cream. My mouth just watered, and I tasted butter pecan soft serve if such a thing exists! Is that a maternal grandmother’s favorite flavor?

Melanie S. wants to know why Cash, her Beagle, licks the floor. It’s so funny because I’m still drooling over the thought of ice cream, but he’s showing me my electrolyte drink.

I like that it keeps my mouth from going dry, and he’s saying the licking action stimulates his salivary glands. I have never had a dog say that, so maybe ask the vet if they’re working correctly and if there’s another way to help him. At this point it also feels automatic and like he’s on autopilot.

Anything I should know to help my dog with vacationing?

Summer is here. Weekend and longer trips are being planned. It is trial season for those who compete with their best friends. Most of us are weekend warriors and by Monday we are tired and sore. We are going to camp for a week of swimming and hiking and lots of new people, changing schedules, noises, and weather.

When your life is pretty sedate during the week, you take Fido out for a walk once or twice a day, then the weekend hits and you go for a two-to-four-hour hike on any terrain.

Now your pup is quiet, exhausted, and may or may not eat for a day or two. Your pet responding to the change in activity just like us. We need to honor his needs for recovery.

You are planning the best vacation.

You have rented a cottage on the lake big enough for friends and family to visit and party. You have everything planned, but have you planned for a safe and happy time for your dog?

We will start with the long drive.

rides. If quiet and sleeping, great. If panting and restless, you need to do something. It is too late to acclimate him to the car, that would have taken months of conditioning. You can ask your veterinarian for some form of calming or anxiety medications, herbals, or nutraceuticals. These usually last a few hours so plan ahead. Have his favorite bed or blanket handy to remind him of home.

Once there, give him a safe place to put his bed or crate. This is his private space, like his bedroom. He can go there to rest as he needs

and not be disturbed. This is very important if you are having visitors, children, and other pets arriving.

If you can, try to keep a schedule for meals and rest. When Fido is a water hog, remember, just like children, he may not want to stop.

Those hikes are fun and can be tiring and painful for unused joints. Be prepared to help relieve joint pain with supplements or medication from your vet. Use your flea and tick prevention as always. You may want to add a flying insect repellent to help with black flies, deer flies, and mosquitoes. Increase his activity incrementally, hopefully before the trip to build up his resilience.

When at the beach, remember the sand is hot and can burn Fido’s feet.

Check often for redness and blisters.

Bring water. Salt water will make him ill and pond water can too.

Be aware of fireworks, and thunderstorms. Bring anything you would use at home to help him cope.

You made it through the trip without vomiting or diarrhea from the change in water and diet changes.

Fido made it with all the added stress of new people, big and small, and all kinds of pets. You allowed him to have his own space which he used often when needed. Swim and hike time was monitored. Car ride home is uneventful. Now what?

You are home. It is time to get back on schedule. This will be a change

for you and your pup. People with athletic dogs also need to be aware of the stress mentally and physically on their partners.

If you are an international team or a weekend warrior, not only you but your best friend needs to regroup and regenerate. If you don’t, injuries and illnesses will happen. Research by specialists around the world shows stress that for every day of competition or heavy activity, dogs needs at least 2 days of recuperation both mentally and physically. Bring the feeding and diet routine back to normal. If Fido gained weight on vacation, cut back on the amount of food you feed until he’s at his normal size. Give him a few days of reduced exercise. Do low impact and low stress activities. His mind needs to take a break too.

If you can, keep him active during the year so the changes on vacation aren’t so dramatic. Know your dog’s concerns and honor them. When you come home, let him chill while you unpack and get back to the weekly routine. Have fun with your best friend on these great getaways. As you plan your trip, remember to plan for your dog too.

The Dog Days of Bridgton is an annual event hosted by Nate and Carole of Tasteful Things. Because they’ve been proud dog and cat parents throughout their lives and are passionate about the well-being of all animals, they wanted to make a difference. To that end, they founded this event in 2018 to benefit local pet rescues and organizations.

t’s August already?! I hope you and your pups have been able to revel in summer activities and stock up on these long, hot days of northern sunshine. It’s hard to believe Labor Day is just around the corner!

For those of us who live in Maine but aren’t so keen on its winters, summers may be a form of positive reinforcement for us. Like a cruel “eat your veggies before you can have dessert” strategy (“Grandma’s Rule”), we suffer through winter knowing summer will return and once again make up for what we were subjected to.

“Positive Reinforcement” We toss this term around loosely, but what does it really mean?

Positive reinforcement is when a learner receives something valuable for a behavior, resulting in the strengthening of that behavior.

Simple, right? Not so much, and it’s usually due to operator error.

When we are working with our dogs, the reinforcer must be immediate and relevant in that moment in order for the dog to associate the

behavior with great stuff, and it must strengthen the behavior and make it more likely to recur. If it fails at any of these things, it’s not PR (or “R+” in trainer lingo). Simply giving a dog a treat is not positive reinforcement, though it might be for us. Reinforcers include much more than treats, though, and we too often underestimate their power and how creative we can be.

he do that will earn him the privilege of having the door open for him?

Does she want the toy in your hand?

Cool! Wait for a bit of eye contact, then offer it. Does he want to sniff the p-mail over there? Awesome!

Life is replete with opportunities to positively reinforce behaviors. Let’s take advantage of them!

New Puppy, New Reinforcers Discovered!

You may recall that the Logan household welcomed a new puppy a few months back. Delilah is now pushing 6 months old, and she’s already well into that terrifying territory called Adolescence.

Unexpected and expected challenges aside, it has been a world of fun learning who she is and what she values in the world. How can I strategically incorporate those things into her life as positive reinforcers and build even more?

WATER, WATER, SHE LOVES WATER! This discovery was a wonderful surprise, especially with her high level of enthusiasm for it. But how to use it as a reinforcer?

THE HOSE Chasing the water from the hose was immediately identified as being at the TOP of her List of Wow. I didn’t want her to be one of those crazed dogs who lost their minds around it, however, so I quickly had to establish some rules.

Examples of behaviors I would reinforce by turning on the hose: Eye

contact and targeting my hand with her nose, coming into heel, a spin, weaving through my legs…. Really anything we’d been working on. I employ a verbal marker and a release cue, so 1) she knows precisely which behavior will get paid and 2) she won’t have access to the stream of water until she hears her release cue.

This exercise alone strengthens her skills and helps cultivate patience, self-control and frustration tolerance.

If she breaks position or tries to access the stream of water before I release her, I just turn it off.

SWIMMING/FETCHING I invite Lilah to do the same behaviors as above before I release her to fetch the toy I’ve tossed into the water (or in the yard).

LEARNING TO BOOGIE We have a kiddie pool at home and a little boogie board that fits inside it. Lilah loves to dig at the nozzle of the hose when it’s on. I reinforce her with this privilege only if she can maintain all four feet on the gradually rising boogie board.

She picked up this rule very quickly because of the WOW factor of the hose. I know I would not have had as much success using treats as a reinforcer.

Could That Lump Be a Mast Cell Tumor?

iscovering a lump on your dog can be unsettling. While many skin masses are harmless, others require prompt medical attention. One of the most common malignant skin tumors in dogs is the mast cell tumor (MCT), a cancer known for its unpredictable behavior and ability to mimic many other skin conditions. Because these tumors can look and behave so differently from one another, veterinarians often refer to them as "the great pretender."

Mast cells are a normal part of your dog's immune system. They play an important role in allergic reactions, inflammation, wound healing, and defense against parasites. These cells contain granules filled with substances such as histamine and heparin, which are released when the immune system is activated. Problems arise when mast cells proliferate uncontrollably, forming a mast cell tumor.

One of the biggest challenges with mast cell tumors is that there is no "typical" appearance. They may present as a small, soft lump under the skin, a firm raised nodule, a hairless patch, or even an ulcerated sore. Some tumors remain unchanged for months

while others seem to grow overnight.

In some cases, owners notice that the lump changes in size from day to day.

This occurs because mast cells release histamine and other inflammatory chemicals, causing temporary swelling around the tumor. Appearance alone does not indicate whether a tumor is benign or aggressive.

Another unique feature of mast cell tumors is that the release of histamine can affect more than just the skin.

Histamine stimulates the stomach to produce more acid, which can lead to gastrointestinal irritation. As a result, some dogs with mast cell tumors may develop vomiting, decreased appetite, or, in more severe cases, stomach ulcers that can cause black, tarry stools (melena). While these signs do not occur in every patient, they are an important reminder that mast cell tumors can affect the whole body—not just where the lump is located.

Because these tumors are so variable, veterinarians cannot determine whether a lump is a mast cell tumor simply by looking at or feeling it. "Every lump deserves a needle before a knife." Instead, one of the first diagnostic tests recommended is a fine-needle aspiration (FNA).

During this procedure, a small needle is used to collect cells from the mass for microscopic examination. The test is

quick, minimally invasive, and generally well tolerated by most dogs. In many cases, it provides a diagnosis without the need for sedation or anesthesia.

Studies have shown that cytology obtained by FNA is highly accurate for diagnosing mast cell tumors, making it an invaluable first step in evaluating any new skin mass.

Mast cell tumors have highly variable biological behavior; prognosis can range from excellent to poor/ grave. Some remain localized, while others are more aggressive and can spread to nearby lymph nodes or internal organs. Additional testing, including biopsy and histopathology, helps determine the tumor's grade and guides treatment recommendations.

For many dogs, surgery is the cornerstone of treatment. Complete surgical removal offers an excellent prognosis for many low-grade mast cell tumors. More advanced tumors may require additional therapies such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or targeted medications. Your veterinarian may also recommend evaluating nearby lymph nodes or performing additional staging tests to determine whether the tumor has spread before deciding on the most appropriate treatment plan.

The most important message for dog owners is simple: don't ignore

a new lump, even if it seems small or harmless. Likewise, don't assume every lump is cancer. Many skin masses in dogs are benign, but the only way to know for certain is through appropriate veterinary evaluation.

A simple fine-needle aspiration can often provide an answer within minutes, allowing your veterinarian to recommend the most appropriate next steps. Early diagnosis frequently provides more treatment options and, when cancer is present, can significantly improve the chances of a successful outcome.

As you spend time with your dog— whether brushing his coat, giving belly rubs, or relaxing together on the couch—take a moment to run your hands over his skin. Becoming familiar with what is normal makes it easier to notice changes early. If you discover a new lump or notice an existing one changing in size, shape, or appearance, schedule a visit with your veterinarian.

It may turn out to be nothing more than a harmless growth, but if it is a mast cell tumor, early detection can make all the difference.

Tracking - Become the Best Handler That You Can Be

T

oo many times the role of the human partner in the tracking team is minimized and sometimes you may hear the statement, "the dog has the nose, follow your dog, you are the dope at the end of the rope." The only part of this statement that is true is that the dog does have the nose. The human half of the team has an important role to play in being observant, supportive, understanding and helpful. To create a real tracking

team, you must be willing to learn to be the best hander that you can be.

Handling means more than lead handling skills. Certainly, you must be skilled at lead handling and be able to give line and take in line efficiently and smoothly but becoming a good handler must go beyond lead handling skills. You

must exhibit neutral body language so that the dog can work without being influenced by your thoughts which usually reflect in your body language. It is important that the handler stay centered and neutral.

Verbally the handler should be quiet (very difficult for some people) and allow the dog to think and work. You may ask the dog a question to keep him focused such as "is that your track?" and you may want to offer some quiet encouragement like "yes" or "good", but basically you should not distract your dog with your voice.

A good handler sets the pace of the track that is comfortable for them. Running after the dog is not only unsafe but will cause the dog to overrun turns. There is no prize for the fastest track.

Posture is important. You should stand upright and be centered and in control of your body and look upward and forward and see not only where you are at the present time, but where you are going. The handler must see the big picture ahead of the team. A good handler has read and understands the rules and comes prepared with all the necessary equipment for the tracking day. You are there to support and teach your dog, not

complain and make excuses. It was too hot, too wet, too cold, etc. A good handler sees problems as learning opportunities and where the team may need more practice.

A good handler will develop a comfortable routine with his dog from the very beginning, which starts with getting out of the car, walking to the track, starting a track, finding an article, recovering from an overrun turn, and ending a track.

There is so much that a handler can contribute to the team effort.

The handler has a big responsibility to the tracking team and must be willing to take on that responsibility.

Tracking is a very intimate human/ canine sport. It is a very wonderful, exciting, and meaningful journey to take with your dog. I hope that you will try it.

The Importance of Being Present This month's column is based

on an educational talk I was asked to present to a business networking group. It is a topic important to anyone who interacts with other sentient beings.

Being present, often called mindfulness, simply means having your mind, senses, and attention fully anchored in the current moment. Mindfulness is essential when communicating with family members, co-workers, clients, students, and anyone else with whom you are having a meaningful conversation. Very few people appreciate being suddenly ignored in the middle of such a conversation.

When someone abruptly disengages with us, for no obvious reason, we may feel slighted, which can lead to frustration and even anger.

There are many things that can happen during an interaction that “break” presence. Those insidious smartphones we all carry, and smartwatches some of us wear, are psychologically engineered to demand our attention instantly when they ping, buzz, or flash.

Did you know that your electronic device triggers a dopamine response in your brain and has trained you to treat it as more important than anything else in your life? If you don’t believe any of that is true, just start watching people.

If you want to be fully engaged with another living being, please silence or turn off your smartphone and watch.

How we feel can also affect our ability to be mindful. If we are ill, in pain, or over-stressed, the polite thing to do is to be honest and simply say, “Now’s not a good time for me; I’m not feeling well.”

noisy or distracting, in which case it’s best to move the conversation to a location where all parties will be comfortable. There will be times when you cannot fully engage; just be honest about it and ensure you set aside time for mindful communication soon.

We pay a price when we are not present. It sends a very clear message that you are not very important to the person you just chose to ignore. Your action may cause them to react the same way towards you in the future. Failure to be present can damage relationships between family members, friends, business partners, students and teachers, you and your clients, and yes, even between you and your

pets.

Being present when interacting with your dog is just as important as being mindful when interacting with any other non-human family member. Over the years, many of my students have come to me because they want their dogs to pay attention to them, yet they clearly don’t understand that their dogs would like the same from them.

Respect goes both ways.

Your dog, who will remain equivalent to a human toddler forever, shares these characteristics with a human toddler. They are prone to emotional outbursts due to joy, anger, frustration, and fear.

Both prefer routine, and changes in that routine can trigger anxiety or an emotional outburst. They have poor impulse control and often act without thinking. When we ignore them when they are hungry, want to play, need to go out, or are training them, they may see our sudden withdrawal of attention as a punishment, and science has proven time and again that punishment has no place in the training of a sentient being. Your dog is more likely to resent your lack of engagement even more than other family members, especially if it is something he experiences frequently.

We bring dogs into our family to be companions. I recommend that you commit to carving out several moments each day to be your dog's companion and to give your dog your undivided attention. That means the phone, the TV, the radio, anything that emits sound, is turned off. Great times for doing so are: • When preparing and feeding your dog his daily meals.

• When playing with your dog, doing something that you both enjoy, either indoors or

outdoors.

• When taking your dog for a walk, focus on watching him as you allow him the freedom to follow his nose and to stop and sniff as long as he wants.

Be aware of what is happening in your environment to keep your dog safe.

• When you are training him and acting as teacher, and he is your student. Learning will be most effective when you are both focused on one another and working in an environment with few or no distractions.

• If you have a dog that likes to snuggle, and not all do, you can both relax and connect just by touch alone. However, please remember, snuggling with us is a choice your dog gets to make. If he doesn’t choose to snuggle, you need to respect his choice.

Rescue of the Month ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY Providing a Safe, Soft Spot for Pets to Land

By Susan Spisak Suzanne Madore, aka Suz, came on board as Animal Welfare Society’s (AWS) Marketing Communications Manager a few months back, and she’s thrilled. She previously dwelled in corporate America utilizing her marketing/social media skills, but as a decade-long volunteer at Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland she was familiar with shelter work, and this move marks an exciting new chapter.

“This is all the stuff I love to do. It’s a great spot, good vibes,” she said about AWS. “Everything we do is to help animals and our community thrive.”

Founded in 1967, the private 501(c) (3) Animal Welfare Society is located at 46 Holland Road in Kennebunk. AWS serves eighteen municipalities, and they care for stray, abandoned, and owner relinquished animals. They also work with out-of-state partners to take

in pets, following all state guidelines, many from southern shelters facing capacity thresholds.

They have an animal shelter, adoption center, and a full-service, in-house veterinary clinic with experienced, dedicated vets and techs.

Suz said that top-notch clinic staff has blown her away––they offer spay/ neuter, wellness exams, preventative care, and microchipping for pets, all at affordable prices. Additionally, AWS hosts free rabies vaccines and microchip clinics––stay tuned for their next event this fall.

Their 2025 Community Impact numbers are impressive. Suz shared that last year they adopted out 290 dogs and reunited 97 lost ones with their owners. “That’s why microchipping is so important,” she emphasized. They served a total of 27,210 pets and pet families. The clinic performed 3,902 spay/neuter

surgeries,1,200 pets were adopted, and volunteers dedicated over 10,500 hours.

As part of their Stay@Home program, aptly titled “Keeping Bellies Full & Hearts Happy,” they provided over 36,000 lbs. of pet food, including 181 local pet families via Meals on Wheels, keeping pets with their families.

Suz said fosters are always needed for short and long-term stays such as for puppies, pets who have been at AWS for a bit, or those stressed in the shelter environment. Being in foster care can be relaxing and allows their true personality to shine, expediting adoption.

In addition, homes are needed for pets who are part of their Stay@ Home emergency sheltering program.

This assists pet owners residing in York County who are experiencing a temporary crisis and need a safe place

for pets to stay while they navigate their situation, such as domestic violence, secure housing, or illness.

They’d like more volunteers for their Dog Dates program. “It’s a great way to have a connection with a dog and get out for a few hours,” explained Suz. Going on a walk, taking them to a pet store, playing fetch, or getting the dog a pup cup would be a terrific afternoon! Suz said it’s as easy as filling out the Dog Date form in detail so the team can ensure a perfect match and you’ll both have a great time.

Furry Words: A Heartfelt Note

Sara Moore recently shared a message she received from someone she had done a reading for, whose story we featured in one of our recent issues. We thought you might enjoy reading this touching message, so we're sharing it with you.

Hi Ms. Moore, You recently did a pet reading for my dog Brody for the Downeast Dog News article. I'm certain when I saw your post and asked you to read for him I spelled his name as Bordy, so that's how it came out in the article. I was hurrying and desperately wanted you to pick us, and you did. I want to tell you how amazingly accurate your reading was. I have had great readings in the past from others but this one was incredible. My husband was very close with my father who was sick for years before his passing. We even built our house next door to my parents so we could help Mom take of him as he declined. That was extremely hard on all of us. Dad has been gone for 9 years now. My husband and I love dogs and love to rescue. We have rescued 7 dogs so far. Brody was my husband's pick and his soul dog. I could go on and on

about how close they were and how much my husband loved that little dog, but I'm sure you already know. Brody's passing was quick and shocking and extremely hard for us to deal with. One day he was walking funny and a few days later we had to put him down due to an inoperable cancerous tumor on his spinal cord. They put him out for an MRI and we never woke him back up. The weekend before your read for Brody came out my Mom and were doing errands and we saw daffodils everywhere. Mom thought they were tulips and that tulips came up before daffodils and we had this funny long conversation about daffodils and then began to see them everywhere. The last line of your read says "He keeps showing me yellow daffodils." We all lost it when we read that line. The beginning of your read was right on as well but the daffodils was something we all couldn't believe. Thank you so much for that. Thank you for letting us know that Brody is resting and no longer in pain. Thank you for giving my husband some peace and thank you for doing what you do. You helped heal all of our hearts.
