THE BETHEL AREA:
where you can
feel like a local even if it’s just for a little while Besides being a beautiful, fourseason mountain destination, the Bethel area has a gravity that tends to pull people in. When you get to talking to the locals, you’ll find that many came for one reason—skiing, hiking, a learning experience, an event—and it drew them in to the point where all of a sudden it’s half a lifetime later.

unspoiled authenticity For a village map, see the center of this book.
Bethel is the definition of an authentic New England town. The walkable village charms with its tidy, locally-owned shops and gracious homes, and winding roads fan out into the river valleys and into the surrounding farmland and mountains. The town has been cultivated over more than 200 years’ time, but not at all stuck in the past. 800-442-5826

the magic of Maine
gems and minerals WHERE TO SHOP
10
After years of development and amassing worldclass collections, the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum is now open on Main Street in Bethel. Maine has long been known for its high quality and quantity of gorgeous gems, and also has a fascinating history of mining minerals. Quartz, amethyst, aquamarine, and especially tourmaline in a rainbow of colors have attracted visitors for over a century.
Maine Mineral & Gem Museum Store 99 Main Street, Bethel mainemineralmuseum.org
MMGM is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and researching the world’s largest display of outstanding minerals and gems; in many cases locating important specimens that have left Maine and bringing them back. The MMGM also houses the Stifler Collection of Meteorites, which comprises more lunar meteorites than all of the other museums in the world combined, including the five largest pieces of the moon on earth, plus many more pieces from Mars. All of this combines with absolutely top-quality, highly interactive exhibit design to create an experience that the Boston Globe says should be on your “museums to visit before you die” list.

WHITEWATER RAFTING Head north to Errol, NH for more paddling options and whitewater rafting with ELC Outdoors or Northern Waters Outfitters. Three classic New England rivers adjacent to the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge within an hour’s drive of Bethel are home to whitewater ranging from mild to wild. Closest to Bethel is the Androscoggin River—as it emerges from Lake Umbagog, it offers an excellent introduction to rafting for first-timers or families. The Magalloway River is a great choice for groups looking for a little more excitement, with myriad twists and turns and near Class III/IV rapids. The Rapid River is a steep, remote, class IV river that connects lower Richardson Lake to Lake Umbagog. Nestled deep in the Maine wilderness, it sees little traffic, making for a unique experience. MOTOR BOATS A trip to Kezar Lake Marina to rent a motor boat and possibly some waterskiing gear would be a wonderful way to experience this gorgeous body of water. 800-442-5826

if you come to play, why not
come to stay? Bethel and the surrounding small towns are gems in the western mountains of Maine, home to down-to-earth, friendly people, a flourishing business community, significant cultural offerings, and some of the best recreational opportunities in New England. This area offers a small-town quality of life that brings people back time and again. It’s not hard to see why people come . . . and stay. Some tout the fresh air surrounding the many mountains around, the quiet backyards for relaxing, the outdoor activities in all four seasons. Some relish the hospitality of the residents and start to picture that this area could be home, and these people could be your neighbors.
If you’re looking to relocate, these communities offer affordable housing, multiple educational facilities, an Age-Friendly Community Initiative (ACFI, agefriendlybethel.com), and a long list of area business services (see pages 58-65) to help you settle into your first home, a vacation home, or your retirement home. Bethel’s unique location and resources combine to make the area a wonderful place to live, work, and play all year round.
