TOWNS

Bridgton is a place where you can experience all four seasons. From the beautiful fall foliage seen from any of Bridgton’s hilltop hiking trails to a perfect winter filled with world class skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing. From lakes and streams that come alive in the spring to the downtown district that erupts with visitors making summer memories. Today Bridgton’s Main Street (Rt. 302) is a thriving, colorful thoroughfare of locally owned shops, galleries and historic homes. Located approximately 35 miles west of Portland and 20 miles east of North Conway, N.H., the town is home to a drive-in movie theater, 18 hole golf course, an academy, hiking and nature trails, free public beaches and boat launches and Shawnee Peak Ski Area.

Though located only a few miles south of Fryeburg on Route 160, Brownfield feels like it’s a million miles away. Mountains, forest and the Saco River are the dominant features in this town. Special events include the Brownfield Fire Department’s Turkey Shoot in November and Brownfield Days held each August. The local economy is boosted by the efforts of light manufacturing, small retail businesses, construction, tourism, home businesses and agriculture.

15

TOWNS

The village of Casco is less than an hour from the Maine coast or the White Mountains. Quiet sanctuaries, a heron rookery, Point Sebago Resort, Sebago Lake State Park swimming area, an active recreation program for all ages and two playgrounds are all part of Casco. Special events include Maine Maple Sunday, Casco Days, and the Maine Lakes Brewfest. Sawmills, construction firms, summer camps, tourism and many small businesses including crafts, gifts, antiques, machine shops, resorts, a winery, art gallery and a variety of other retail and service businesses fuel the economy. Casco is now proud to boast a new Town Office as well as a recently renovated Community Center with an electric car charging station.

Located on Route 117, Denmark sits at the southern end of Moose Pond, beneath the shadow of Shawnee Peak. There are at least four trails up the mountain from Denmark locations. Though there is one town operated public boat launch at Moose Pond, the state of Maine maintains three other boat launches in town. The Denmark Public Library, Denmark Municipal Building and Kate Sanborn Memorial Field, Denmark Arts Center and Historical Society, Denmark Community Church plus a few small businesses create the center of town. Of special note is the fact that in 1901, Camp Wyonegonic, located on Moose Pond, was the first children’s camp to open in Maine. Special town events include the Sheep Fest, July 4th parade, the Lions Club Annual Bean Hole Supper and their fall Turkey Shoot. Education, tourism, construction, boating and camping, service and retail trade create the economy of Denmark.

16

Located on the Saco River and New Hampshire border, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors in Fryeburg. The town is home to Hemlock Covered Bridge, several easy hiking trails, miles of snowmobile trails, Fryeburg Academy, twelve public parks, two public beaches, three public boat launches, two museums, two campgrounds, an active recreation department, two playgrounds, a dance school, bowling and simulated golf at Saco Valley Sports Center, an outdoor ice rink, eleven buildings on the National Register of Historic Places and Eastern Slopes Regional Airport. Special events include Memorial Day and July Fourth parades, the Beautification Plant Sale, summertime concerts at the Bradley Park Gazebo, Maine Street Festival Arts and Crafts Fair, the Fryeburg Fair, and Maine’s Blue Ribbon Classic.

Harrison is located on Route 117 at the northern end of Long Lake. Art and culture are very much alive in Harrison due to Deertrees Theater and Cultural Center, The Back Stage Art Gallery at Deertrees and several other studios. Whether it’s boating or ice skating on Long Lake or participating in one of the recreation departments many programs for young and old, there’s always something to do in Harrison. Special events in Harrison are Old Home Days activities including a childrens’ parade and Christmas in Harrison including the Candlelight Parade and several holiday craft fairs. Like other towns and villages in the area, the population increases significantly in the summer. Restaurants, tourism, summer camps, marinas, home businesses, retail shops and a variety of service industries form the business sector of the community.

17

TOWNS

Lovell is located on Route 5. With almost every road bearing the word “Hill” in the name, you have an idea of the terrain of this area. And from those hills, the view of the White Mountains is spectacular. There are several hikes for all abilities, two libraries, six ponds, two public boat launches, five sites on the National Register of Historic Places including an archeological site, two outdoor ice skating areas, a country club, two playgrounds, miles of trails on the snowmobile route, a multi-generational recreation department and an active arts and culture community. Special events include Old Home Days activities, the annual Arts and Artisans Craft Show at the New Suncook School, Tour de Lovell, Gasping Gobbler 5k run/walk, and an annual antique show and sale at the Kimball Stanford House. The local economy is sparked by tourism, guide services, light manufacturing, antique, gift and craft shops plus service and professional businesses.

Naples is one of the most picturesque small towns in Western Maine surrounded by Maine nature at its finest. Located in the center of southern Maine’s Lake Region, Naples has a wealth of opportunities for recreation year-round. Visitors are drawn to the Naples Causeway on Long Lake and Brandy Pond where they find our special attraction, the Songo River Queen II, multiple marinas and lots of fun activities by day, then spectacular sunsets and bustling nightlife at restaurants and pubs. Special events include a, Memorial Day Parade, Maine Blues Festival, Classic Antique Wooden Boat Show, July 4th Parade and Fireworks, Naples Main Street at Christmas and several holiday craft fairs. There is much to do in this unique Maine community. Once you visit you will likely find that Naples is a town that you will never forget!

18

This town is located on Route 302, also known as Roosevelt Trail, and offers a sidewalk extending from Raymond Beach to Windham. Raymond is the home of two public beaches,, two boat launches, five ponds and two lakes for water adventures. The Sheri Gagnon Memorial Park, Panther Run Picnic Area, several hiking trails, as well as mountain bike trails at Morgan Meadows enhance the outdoor activities in Raymond. The East Raymond Union Chapel and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s boyhood home are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Businesses from advertising to woodworking with many in between including florist, retail and specialty shops provide services and jobs in Raymond.

The village of Sebago is located on the western shore of Sebago Lake. Named by Native American’s as the “great lake” or “big lake,” Sebago is eight miles wide and twelve miles long. Four other ponds, a mountain trail, and plenty of space for other hikes, senior meals every Tuesday at noon, two campgrounds, a library, the Sebago Historical Society Museum, town gym available for rent and a building on the National Register of Historic Places all make Sebago a great place to live. Special events include Maine Maple Sunday including the annual pancake breakfast and Sebago Days events. Local employment includes auto and engine repair shops, construction and excavation, farms, marinas, summer camps, logging and sawmills, education, tourism and antique and specialty shops.

19

TOWNS

Located on Route 113, fifteen minutes from Fryeburg and thirty minutes from Bridgton, Stow is the gateway to the White Mountain National Forest through Evans Notch. Scenic drives, breathtaking mountain views, clear lakes and streams, wildlife and outdoor recreation opportunities including camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, crosscountry skiing, mountain biking, canoeing and bird watching all make Stow a special place. With only 312 people in the 23 square miles, there just might be a larger horse population than residents. Stow’s most notable event was the July 1993 discovery of a 9-pound amethyst crystal at privately owned Eastman Mine on Deer Hill. For a fee, you may acquire a permit to a mine on the east side of Deer Hill and spend the day looking for amethyst, tourmaline and other gems.

Tucked into the rolling hills between Lovell, Bridgton, and Waterford, Sweden is only a short distance from anywhere, but feels like another world. A quiet town, Sweden is known for its country roads, stonewalls and scenic vistas. A new post and beam town office, Sweden Historical Society, Blacksmith Shop Museum in the old school house, Town Meeting House and Sweden Community Church are located near the crossroads of Route 93, Waterford Road and Webber Pond Road. Five ponds, including the northern end of Moose Pond, provide opportunities for small boat activities. Public boat launches are available at Keyes Pond and Stearns Pond and there is a public beach at Keyes (rhymes with “eyes”). About 325 people make their home in the 29 square miles of Sweden. Residents participate in recreational events offered by surrounding towns. Two seasonal residential camps and agriculture aid the economy of the town. 20

Located along Routes 35, 37 and 118, the three villages of Waterford are nestled in the rolling hills of Western Maine. With two public beaches, three boat accesses, six ponds, Crooked River, Mud Pond fen and Keoka Lake, there is plenty to do on the water in Waterford. Three hikes, one of those for experienced rock climbers, two public parks, two museums, a pottery studio, two campgrounds, and twenty-three buildings on the National Register of Historic Places make this a quaint place to live or visit. Special events include the July 4th parade, North Waterford World’s Fair, Waterford Chili Cook-off and Fall Foliage 5K road race plus a one-mile fun run for kids. The local economy receives a boost from the building industry, farming, tourism, camps, light manufacturing, and antique and specialty shops.

LAKES AND PONDS

You’ll find 82 lakes and ponds to sail, canoe, water ski, swim and fish; a place for year-round recreation. Discover why we’re called the Lakes Region.

pleasure. The pond has long been the connection between Long Lake and Sebago Lake. It was originally called the Bay of Naples. Encompassing 740 acres, Brandy Pond has a maximum depth of 44 feet and an average depth of 16 feet.

SEBAGO LAKE Known far and wide for its size, depth and cleanliness, Sebago Lake is the reason many visitors come here and is often the reason they keep coming back year after year.

LONG LAKE Long Lake is the northern link in the chain of lakes that includes Brandy Pond and Sebago Lake and is bordered by three area towns: Naples, Bridgton and Harrison. It is considered one of the premier recreational lakes in all of Maine.

Sebago Lake, the second largest lake in Maine, is roughly fifteen miles long and ten miles wide with a surface area covering over 30,500 acres. The lake is 316 feet deep at its deepest and has an average depth of 107 feet.

Long Lake is 11 miles long, a mile wide, and covers 5,295 acres. It is 59 feet deep at its deepest and has a mean depth of 23 feet. With the town of Harrison at its northern most point and Naples at its southern most, the lake features access to restaurants and shops via boat.

Spend time on this lake and experience all of its wonderful features: wide expanses of open water, bird and animal life, towering trees along its shoreline, and inspiring views of Mount Washington and the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

CRYSTAL LAKE

There is a public boat launch on Route 302 in Raymond.

Crystal Lake in Harrison is one of the most popular spots in the area because of its sandy public beach, convenient boat launch and welcoming picnic area; adjacent to the picnic area is a ball field and a playground. Two miles long and a mile wide, Crystal Lake has a surface area of 446 acres and a

and deepest section, the main basin in Bridgton. The pond encompasses 1,694 acres in total. In the main basin, the pond is nearly a mile wide and its maximum depth reaches 70 feet.

The public boat launch is located on Route 117. HIGHLAND LAKE

From the Moose Pond causeway on Route 302 is one of the most striking views of the area, that of Pleasant Mountain and Shawnee Peak ski area. There’s a public boat launch at the causeway in Bridgton and another in Denmark.

Originally called Crotched Pond, Highland Lake in Bridgton stretches from downtown to the edge of Sweden. The lake is about four miles long and a mile wide and has 1,334 acres of surface area. It has a maximum depth of 50 feet and a mean depth of 20 feet.

WOODS POND

Magnificent views of Mount Washington and the White Mountains are visible from many points. The outlet to Highland Lake features an old milldam and Stevens Brook spillway. The north end of the lake is wilder and offers opportunities for spotting many forms of birdlife and wildlife. It is also the center for many activities during Bridgton’s Winter Carnival.

Named for Bridgton’s first surveyor, Solomon Woods, who came to the area in 1776, Woods Pond is long and narrow. It is a 462-acre body of water. The pond is two miles long and just under a half mile wide. It has a maximum depth of 29 feet and the water quality is average. The town beach and boat launch on Route 117 provide easy access.

A town beach and public boat launch are located on Highland Road.

TRICKEY POND Surrounded by tall pines and deciduous forests, the crystal clear water of Trickey Pond in Naples is a great place to feel you are in the heart of the wilderness, with dark starry nights and the cries of the loon.

MOOSE POND Moose Pond in West Bridgton stretches eleven miles from its wilder reaches in Sweden to its more placid southern end in Denmark. In between find its widest

KEOKA LAKE

long, a half-mile wide and covers 315 acres. It has a maximum depth of 57 feet and a water quality rating of excellent. A public boat launch is located on Route 114.

Keoka Lake in Waterford sits at the edge of Waterford Flat, one of the prettiest little New England villages around. The lake is 462 acres in size, has a maximum depth of 42 feet, and a water quality rating of slightly above average.

HANCOCK POND Hancock Pond is located in Denmark and Sebago. It has a surface area of 761 acres, a maximum depth of 59 feet and a mean depth of 17 feet. The pond provides a diversity of sports fishing for every kind of angler throughout the year. Hancock Pond has two public boat launches—one at its northeast end and the other at its southwest corner.

Keoka Lake’s gravel and boulder shoreline provides excellent habitat for both smallmouth and largemouth bass. The public beach and boat launch are located at the northwest corner. LOVEWELL POND Lovewell Pond is located in Fryeburg. The pond is subject to flooding when the Saco River floods. During these floods the outlet actually reverses direction and flows back into the pond.

PEABODY POND Named for Captain John Peabody, one of the first settlers of South Bridgton, Peabody Pond is tucked away along the boundaries of Sebago, Naples and Bridgton. It measures 740 acres in size, has a maximum depth of 64 feet and a mean depth of 32 feet. Its water quality is rated as excellent.

It covers 1,129 acres in surface area, has a maximum depth of 45 feet and a mean depth of 17 feet. There is a public boat launch off Rte. 113 at the southwest corner of the pond.

The rocky shoreline and protected coves provide good fish habitat. A deep chasm that runs through the center of the pond stays cool in the summer giving landlocked salmon, brook trout and lake trout refuge from the warmer waters above. There is a public boat launch on Peabody Pond Road in Sebago.

KEZAR LAKE Located in the foothills of the White Mountains in the town of Lovell, Kezar Lake is divided into three sections, Upper Bay, Middle Bay and Lower Bay. The Narrows separates the latter two. The lake is nine miles long, encompasses 2,665 acres and has maximum depth of 155 feet, with a mean depth of 34 feet. Two boat ramps are located on the lake, one at Upper Bay and the second at The Narrows.

BEAR POND The pond is the Waterford’s deepest water body at 72 feet. Its surface area encompasses 250 acres. A small area at the south end of the pond is for public access and there is a public boat launch on Rtes 35/37.
