The newlyweds with good friend Billy and swimsuit models Cara and Ashley

This issue is particularly special for a couple of reasons, it marks our fifth summer hosting the RSSS. The largest Summer Surf Series and Green beach festival in San Diego. But even more so, It also marks our first summer together as husband and wife. Yes, Leslie and I ran off to Vegas last month and got married. (yeah, yeah, I can’t believe she married me too) Thanks to all our friends & family members that dropped everything and flew out to Vegas for the craziest / coolest wedding weekend we could imagine. Much love to you all! Our first surf event is coming up fast, & we have our work cut out for us, arranging sponsors and making sure we have great swag for our top riders. The Green Beach Festival is shaping up to be the largest to date, with a bunch of new vendors and sponsors exhibiting their eco friendly and environmentally conscious services and products. Our goal is to encourage a sustainable lifestyle & to bring environmental awareness to our friends in the surfing communities. Live Green. There will be around 150 riders from around the globe competing at each event. Top riders will score cash, prizes, new boards & trophys. This season we will run the events at both PB and OB piers (thus the title Pier II Pier Pro AM) We look forward to seeing you all again this summer. (see this month’s centerfold) By now you have probably heard of the Revolt In Style issue release parties. They are epic gatherings for all of our friends & fans to blow off a little steam. Last month we took over Typhoon Saloon in PB. This month we will all converge on the Fleetwood downtown to kick off Memorial Day weekend. Friday the 27th come down and meet the swimsuit models, enjoy the beats by Dj Schoneys, Dj Devoy & Los Drumz and check out the bikini fashion show. If it’s anything like our past events, better get there early, ‘cause I guarantee it’ll be a zoo later. RSVP in advance at revolt@revoltsd.com & get on the VIP list.

tone Brewing Co. is pursuing a variety of expansion plans, including opening a store front in San Diego’s South Park neighborhood and a brewery and restaurant large enough to seat 400 in Point Loma’s Liberty Station.

Greg Koch, Stone’s CEO, is an environmentalist - the brewery is installing three charging stations for electric cars. DON’T FEAR THE SAKE

Never let the sake list at a sushi joint intimidate you again. Learn the basics from The Master, Aki San

M

aster sushi chef and sake aficionado Aki San is always willing to suggest a pairing of quality sake with fresh sushi at The Surfside. Like wine, sake can enhance your food and create a memorable dining experience. To better appreciate Sake, one needs to know that it is divided into four major categories: Daiginjo, Ginjo, Junmai, and Honjozo.

Daiginjo is prized as the top of Japanese Sake. It has a very light, fragrant, fruity and subtle taste. Ginjo is Sake brewed with rice where each grain has been polished away by 40-50%. Like Daiginjo, the flavor of Ginjo is light, fragrant and even complex. Junmai is brewed only with rice, filtered water, and Koji mold, Junmai Sake is in general full-bodied and slightly acidic. Honjozo is brewed with rice, filtered water, Koji mold and yeast. The grain of rice is polished by more than 30%. A small amount of alcohol is added in the final fermentation process. Dry and smooth, usually lighter and more fragrant than Junmai Sake. In addition there is also Nigori Sake, unfiltered, subtly sweet, and has a white, cloudy look. All of these categories are well represented on The Surfside Sushi Restaurant sake menu.

BIG BOYS- Junmai Sake 18.00 - 28.00 18oz Kurosawa - brewed in the traditional way, is rich, deep, and well-balanced and compliments Asian cuisine. Can be served warm or chilled. Alcohol 15% Daishichi Kimoto - is rich & dry. Full-bodied and dry Sake with rich layers of rice aroma and taste. The personal choice of the Revolt In Style crew. Always consumed ice cold and usually by the magnum. Alcohol: 15-16% Ozeki Karatamba Junmai Honjozo - Light on the palate, then grows just a bit. Sweet overtones without the requisite acidity (a little fat). Very short finish. A light, simple sake. Alcohol: 15-16% Otkoyama (literally translated as “Man’s Mountain”) has been making sake for more than 340 years. Apparently it was the drink of choice for the Shoguns. In the mouth it is smooth and extremely silky in texture with lovely acidity and a floral, rainwater quality that makes for an incredibly clean experience on the palate. Alcohol: 16%

“The most important rule is... there are no rules.” TOP SHELF: Ginjo & Daiginjo 28:00 - 60:00 18oz Kubota Manju - Amazing Niigata Sake. one of the finest examples of the Daiginjo style and winner of countless sake gold medals. Delicious and worth every penny. Kubota Hekiju - A masterpiece. Clear, balanced and the textbook example of Niigata sake. Hananomai Katana “Japanese Sword” A full-bodied Ginjo. This super-dry sake has a thick flavor with almost no perceptible smell or sweetness.

WHERE TO STAY, WHAT TO DO, WHO TO DO IT WITH...

Planet Hollywood completely hooked up the newlyweds with a luxury suite overlooking the Las Vegas strip and the The Pleasure Pools below.

W

hen Revolt In Style owners Brian and Leslie decided to tie the knot, there was only one real choice...Vegas, baby! Where else could you go on short notice, modest budget and with unconventional tastes? Plans were quickly formed for forty-eight hours of fun in the sun, debauchery, and of course, classic Elvis nuptials in Las Vegas.

A few calls to our PR friends at R&R Partners and everyone was set up at the Planet Hollywood Resort, courtesy of Ceasars Entertainment. We were taken care of from arrival, to ceremony, to wedding night, like VIP’s. Planet Hollywood caters to a much younger & hipper crowd than most of the other resorts on the strip. Very cool, very stylish. We felt it was a great fit for our friends and family that attended. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their stay. Lounging poolside with refreshing cocktails was relaxing. The variety of restaurants was excellent. The night of our wedding, Executive Chef John Schenk prepared an absolutely amazing lobster and grilled filet for both of us at the Strip House (a steakhouse unlike any other in Las Vegas). There was sexy gaming in the Pleasure Pit (go-go dancers performing overhead in the gaming area for all to enjoy), hip bars, chic lounges and the 20,000-square-foot Gallery Nightclub was bangin’! Oh, yeah, we actually hit 2 jackpots that paid for our whole trip. Sweet. Without a doubt the best trip to Las Vegas...ever. Not only were we treated like VIP guests, we lounged, we drank, we danced, we laughed, we won. But, I also have to brag that I came home from Las Vegas with a brand new, breathtaking... beautiful...wife. Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino 3667 Las Vegas Boulevard. ELVIS WEDDING GRACELAND CHAPEL

Today, getting married by the Elvis is as much a part of Las Vegas tradition as blackjack and neon. There is one chapel that started it all. That chapel is Graceland Wedding Chapel. When we decide to get married, there was no other choice... we went with the original. Getting married in the same chappel as Jon Bon Jovi? Really? Absolutely!

LOUNGE TOPLESS

Graceland offers all of the traditional Las Vegas wedding services: professional photography, video services, floral arrangements, live webcast, all with The King in attendance. White stretch limosines pick up the bride, groom and wedding party at their hotel lobby & make sure everyone has a cocktail or chilled champagne while they roll down the strip to the chapel. First class, all the way. So, get this...Upon request, Elvis will walk the Bride down the aisle, give her away, all while providing some surprisingly awesome musical accompaniment (guitar) for the couple and guest’s entertainment. It’s safe to say, the atmosphere of an Elvis Wedding is a blast, and the whole event is transformed into a festive and fun celebration, much more than just any old wedding. Elvis concluded the ceremony with “Viva Las Vegas”, and an Elvis wedding would not be complete without hearing...”Elvis has left the building...” Highly recommended as the ultimate nontraditional wedding option. JOSH HALL

Seasoned Surfer. Expert Shaper. PB Surf Club President. Interview and Photo by Aaron Goulding

B

orn and raised in San Diego and surfing most of his life, Josh Hall has the experience to craft a quality 100% hand shaped surfboard. He has learned from the best! Josh credits Skip Frye for mentoring him.

Josh’s Hole in the Hall shaping room is located in the heart of South County San Diego’s surf industry. He shapes nearly side by side with Skip Frye and his main glasser Michael Miller. Across the road is Bird’s Surf Shed and up the road is Joe Roper’s Ding Repair who also does some glassing for Josh. If you need a new board, Josh can custom shape you one that fits your style and the waves you surf. RIS: So Josh, how many years have you been shaping and who or what inspired you to start? JH: I shaped my first board in the spring of 1999, but decided to make it my career in July of 2006. I was inspired by Skip Frye from having grown up on the beach at Felspar St. surfing Crystal Pier…and also inspired by Donald Takayama and the boards he was building for Joel Tudor at that time. RIS: Where do you get your foam? JH: US Blanks…Gardena California RIS: Shaping is definitely an art form, but do you consider your shapes to be art? JH: Absolutely, being that each board is 100% hand shaped by me. If it were a bronze sculpture or something similar all of us would be earning more scrilla… and to think that these shapes actually work in an unstable medium. Get something out of metal to do that! RIS: There are so many good shapers in the world. What sets you aside from the rest and do you think you can survive in this economy? JH: Well I’m extremely fortunate to be mentored by Skip Frye who in my opinion has created his own unique design thread in this industry and I’m just really humbled and honored to help carry on the torch. I do business over seas quite a bit, so a little here, a little there helps things get along okay. RIS: What types of boards do you prefer to shape? JH: Everything but the normal shortboard…no way I’m gonna bust air. RIS: Do you currently have any team riders that you’d like to note? JH: The Hole in the Hall Gang… Mike List, Mark Garcia, Richard Comiskey, Joe Enge, Matt Gover...Skip Frye… RIS: What would you say to someone aspiring to become a shaper? JH: Pay your dues…don’t shape 100 boards, get a good one, then scan it and have it cut on the machine and call yourself a shaper…it takes more than that. Also watch as many people as you can, or anyone who will let you. Good Luck!

18  WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

RIS: What sort of feedback do you get on your boards? JH: Good sorts…one thing that is really inspiring being a shaper is when you get a new client in another area and you build them a board based only on talking with them. And then they call and leave you this 3 minute voice mail about the board and first impressions…. how easy it paddles in to waves …explicative….fly’s down the line…explicative… how much speed it holds through the turns... explicative…explicative… Having people sound like 12 year olds groms, about how stoked they are on the board…that’s pretty rewarding RIS: Do you have any new projects in the works? JH: Well I’ve been filming lately with Mark Jeremias for a small part in Tyler Warrens’ new movie due out this summer (Tyler Warren Experiments). I also have been shooting with Taylor Larison. And I’m going to be over in Spain and France shaping during June and July. RIS: IS there anything you’d like to add? JH: Thank you for everyone’s support that has allowed me to get to this point so far! I’m thankful to you all! Also, support your local shapers, support your local ding repair shop (Joe Ropers) and get down to Birds Shed. Thanks for your time! Slide the Glide

SISTER POWER

LANI

Athlete of the month

At 18 years old, Lani Doherty is a hot commodity in the surfing world. Not only is she photogenic (which her sponsors love), she’s also a very talented young surfer. Lani is not afraid to hit the lip and is a top contender among her peers. She loves to travel the world and surf. She is also very into the environment and the green movement. Keep an eye out for this beautiful upcoming professional surfer. Lani scores herself a $50 gift certificate from Wahoo’s Fish Tacos as Athlete of the Month. Congrats...& share with your sister.

Interviews and Photography by Aaron Goulding & Steve Thrailkill RIS: So you started surfing in Maui when you were pretty young? How old were you? LD: Yeah, my whole family was into surfing so I was on the nose of my dad’s board at 6 months and then on my own board at 5 years old. RIS: What was your first surf session like? LD: I can’t really remember my first session but I use to surf Lahaina’s breakwall a lot when I was younger and I just loved going out there with my friends and catching white water while my dad was watching me from the breakwall. RIS: With blonde hair and fair skin, was it tough growing up on Maui? LD: Not really... I mean sometimes if I went somewhere new I might get called haole or something, but everyone basically knew me so I didn’t get hassled.

RIS: Where was your favorite spot to surf on Maui? LD: My favorite spot would be Lahaina Harbor. I surfed there so much, that’s really were I started to step up my surfing. RIS: You have competed for many years. What was your most memorable event? LD: the most memorable would probably be when I went to ISA Jr. World games in Ecuador. It was such a fun experience traveling with USA team, and then meeting new people from all over the world and seeing a new culture really opened my eyes to a new way of thinking. RIS: What’s it like to be sponsored by one of the largest sunglass companies in the world? LD: It’s such an amazing blessing! Everyone from Oakley are great people, they really try to figure out ways to help promote a green way of living which I really feel strong about. RIS: You just turned 18 years old and I know your father has been a huge part of your life and he will always support you, but do you think being responsible for yourself will affect your surfing? LD: Yes. I feel like I’ve almost been too sheltered and being able to go out on my own more will open my eyes to new things and it’ll help me grow as a person and a surfer. RIS: What is it like to have a beautiful younger sister that seems to be following in your footsteps? LD: I think it’s really trippy seeing her surfing progress the way it is. It definitely pushes me to try and stay ahead of her. RIS: You are very easy going and you seem very freespirited. What would be your ideal surf destination? LD: A boat trip in Indonesia with some of my good friends. Surfing and cruising all day.

20  WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

RIS: Besides being a very talented surfer, you seem very capable of having a modeling career. Has that ever crossed you mind? LD: Yeah. I’ve thought of it and it could be cool thing to get into, but I want to be known as a surfer first. RIS: How is your pet Opossum doing? LD: Iggy is doing great! He is starting to crawl out of his box now though... RIS: I heard you went to Coachella. What was the best show you saw? LD: Coachella was amazing!!! A couple of my friends and I drove up on my 18th birthday an camped there for 4 days. But my favorite shows that I saw was probably kings of Leon, Phantogram, Mumford and Sons, Two Door Cinema Club, and The Black keys. RIS: If you could make one great change for the better for life on Earth, what would it be? LD: It would probably to help keep the ocean a more clean and spiritual place. I’ve been reading a lot on how to help keep the ocean cleaner and how to conserve water from books and reports that the artist Wyland has published. It’s very informative and interesting. RIS: Do you have anything you’d like to add? LD: I think people that have an opportunity to speak out and help really need to take advantage of it. I think surfers should get more involved in the community and become advocates of organizations they really believe in. The Surfrider Foundation is always looking for volunteers and I’m really starting to get into the Wyland foundation and it’s really opening my mind and soul.

SISTER POWER

Interviews and Photography by Aaron Goulding

t 15 years old, Kulia Doherty has the most wins in the world. She wins more often than even Kelly Slater. She has beat out girls in two divisions and continues to slay it internationally.

It would seem there is no stopping her. Having been born and raised in Maui, surfing is in her blood. Kulia’s surfing reflects a unique fluid, yet aggressive style. She is extremely fit and trains hard to be the best in her class. After spending time with her, and seeing her in action, we predict a long and successful career for Lani in the sport of surfing. RIS: So Kulia, where and when did you start surfing and where do you live and surf now? KD: I started surfing when I was four years old at Ho’okipa, Maui. I now live in San Clemente and I like to surf around San Clemente or go down and catch some waves in Encinitas. RIS: There are many female surfers who shred. What do you think sets you apart from the rest. KD: Nothing sets me apart from the rest. All of us girls just love the ocean and want to make a career out of surfing, so we train and surf hard. RIS: What surfer do you most admire and how have they influence you? KD: I admire Wyland the most. He has the goal to conserve and keep our water clean to help save our Earth.

RIS: You are a big competitor; do you do anything to train besides surf? KD: To be at the top of your level you definitely have to take your sport seriously and do other things to train. Cross-training really helps my surfing by cardio and also preventing my legs from buckling on me in mid-turn. I run every day, do sets of stairs, and also do dance videos. Gotta keep some fun in there!

KD: My sister and I have always been each-other’s biggest competition since day one. If she hasn’t always been one step ahead, I would be ten steps back.

RIS: At fifteen, the sky is the limit! Where do you see yourself in five years? KD: In five years I would hope to see myself on the WCT and also taking college classes, you always need a backup plan in case you didn’t go where you would have hope to go in your surfing career. Education is everything.

RIS: Now is your chance to give some praise. Who are you most thankful for? KD: I’d have to say I wouldn’t be anywhere close to where I am today if it weren’t for my dad and sister and God. My dad and my sister have supported me and pushed me to keep getting better and better, and God gives me the strength threw everything I do every day.

RIS: Your sister Lani is also a great surfer. Would it be fair to say that you girls are always pushing each other to be a better surfer? Or do you just do your own thing?

RIS: What music makes you want to surf? KD: Whenever I hear some Two Door Cinema Club, Lady Hawke, Santigold, or Dubstep I get so amped! It pretty much makes me act like a stoking lil’ grom.

RIS: Thank you so much for your time Kulia. See you in the water! KD: Thanks!!

Bird Huffman’s Unique Vision for Surf Retail

“I just really want to follow my passionsurfboards, wetsuits and surf gear for the surfer.”

an Diego’s newest surf shop hardly resembles a typical surf retailer. There are no enormous neon advertisements shouting about the newest surf trend. There are no monstrous signs inviting the pasty masses to take a first surf lesson or rent a boogie for the day. It’s not even near the beach. But make no mistake, this unassuming business is as authentically surf-oriented as any. Bird’s Surf Shed is found in a Quonset hut in the midst of a semi-coastal commercial zone. It is a modest building in an unremarkable locale. But a peek through the door, just a moment’s glance, reveals the true character of the place. Inside are dozens of rare, beautiful, historically significant, and fantastically functional surfboards. The Shed is a sacred place; part warehouse and part church. But the boards inside are neither a museum display nor a wealthy collector’s clutch of trophy boards. Rather, each one holds a story for its owner and the proprietor of the new Surf Shop, Eric “Bird” Huffman. Bird has lived a remarkable life in Surfing. Born in San Diego to ocean-loving parents who had migrated from Minnesota, Bird spent long summer days in the waters of La Jolla. There he and his siblings played in the sand and surf, learning the rhythms of the ocean. Before long his older brothers and first surf influences, Mark and Rex, began to take their surfing more seriously. They rode kneeboards in dramatic fashion. Tube rides

and high torque speed lines captured Bird’s young imagination. Soon Bird was in the water with them, sampling waves all along the San Diego coast. He shared the water with the great surfers of the day. O’Rourke and Keating set the stage in La Jolla while at other San Diego reefs Bird was witness to the exploits of Stevie Lis and his cohort. At the same time, Phil Castagnola’s Select Surf Shop became his local hangout and first employer in the surf industry. Select was the quintessential surf shop. It was equal parts hangout and business place. Rowdy teenagers mingled with the best surfers of the area. Summer tourists bumped into the most local of surfers. Guys chased girls and Castagnola chased the dollar.

surf shops. However, Huffman’s feelings surrounding surf retail began to change. Bird reflects, “In the last several years my stoke kind of petered out about retail. I’ve been frustrated by some elements of surf culture. I just really want to follow my passion- surfboards, wetsuits and surf gear for the surfer.”

in and ride some boards. You see that board on the wall? Take it out for a spin. These boards are our heritage and they need to be shared.” With Bird’s vast surfboard collection and network of connections he is able to offer an authentic experience that connects the surfer of today with San Diego’s rich surfing heritage in a unique way.

Now Bird begins his next challenge, Bird’s Surf Shed. The shop will be totally unique. It will hold all the commonplace retail products of any surf shop, but will also be a kind of cultural hub. “I want The Shed to be a place for everybody- a place where there’s always something to explore,” Bird says. “It’s not just a retail store.”

Huffman’s work at Select brought him into contact with the seminal shapers of the day. The likes of Skip Frye, Bill Caster, and Stevie Lis became acquaintances and friends of Bird. Many of Bird’s relationships with these characters continue into the present. “I’ve been amazing lucky,” Huffman states. “I’ve met and gotten to know so many of the area’s best surfers and shapers and have called many of them friends.”

The Shed has been outfitted with a media room and library stocked with an astonishing array of content so that customers will be able to learn about surfing’s past. “I like to educate.” Says Bird. “I want people to come in, hang and learn, catch an art show one week and hear a talk the next.” Already, before a formal opening, Bird has hosted seminal surf photographer Jeff Divine for a packed-house presentation. Additionally, Huffman’s Shed is wired to provide original webcast and podcast content when notable visitors are lurking.

Huffman’s hope is that the surfing community will be something of a partner in his enterprise, guiding the development of the shop into a resource for local surfers. Bird states, “I am relying on my customers, the surfers of San Diego, to help guide me. I want this to be a place where everything comes together.” This vision for The Shed has inspired many of Bird’s friends to support his project. Both Skip Frye and Steve Lis have made boards for the shop and others have donated time and energy breathing life into The Shed.

After years at Select, Bird was in demand as a connected young surfer who knew how to operate a business. Huffman spent time at La Jolla Surf Systems and eventually partnered to open up his first shop, Windansea Surf Shop, in downtown La Jolla. Over the years and through many changes, Bird Huffman has remained a major player in local

Huffman’s vision of a surfing cultural center does not end with media presentations. Bird plans on allowing much of his extensive surfboard collection to be used as test boards for his customers. Bird states, “Come

Bird Huffman has had a remarkable life in surfing. He knows everyone and is known everywhere. He is one of the few San Diego surfers who can session at any spot in the county with an accepting reception from the local crew. He surfs well and often. He has a beautiful, supportive family. Oh, and he has those boards, those many beautiful boards. Now Bird is ready to share his rich surf life with San Diego. In years to come Bird’s Surf Shed will evolve into an authentic surf shop and a place where surfing’s history, heart and soul can be accessed.

MIKE VALLELY MOST METAL ATHLETE

By Eric Hendrikx

Most Metal Athlete – The third annual Revolver Golden

In Nathaniel Hawthorn’s, The Scarlet Letter, a young woman named Hester Pyrnne was adorned with the mark of an outcast among her Puritan village – a letter “A” that was to forever be present on her attire as a symbol of her indiscretion for all to see. It was a mark that identified her place in population for the remainder of her life – and as the story ends; the letter “A” was ultimately inscribed on her tombstone to remain for eternity. Since the inception of his career in professional skateboarding in 1986, Mike Vallely (“Mike V”) has also worn a letter for his unorthodox style of skating – the letter “V” that not only identifies his uncompromising nature, but also displays his relentless appetite for skateboarding and inner-pressure to evolve as both athlete and man. Mike’s letter is a letter of respect – from his peers, from those who follow his footprints, from his fans. His proven evolution has taken the once prodigy skater who created many of the tricks and fundamentals that have paved the realm of skateboarding into a league of his own. Mike has lived a successful career by remaining true to his spirit as both soulful street skater and competitive athlete. His success has contributed to all facets of today’s sport from competitions, industry, and into the streets. Mike stands alone in his category but represents all of skateboarding. Those who wish to bear a symbol of independence, authenticity and pride can wear the letter “V”.

Gods Awards presented at Club Nokia in Downtown Los recently awarded Mike as Most Metal Athlete for his epic career in the sport and his undeniably-metal and assertive approach to life. The event included performance including Avenged Sevenfold, Alice Cooper, and DevilDriver with a special vocal appearance by Mike. Highlights from the Revolver Golden Gods Awards will be broadcast on VH1 Classic on Saturday, May 28. Revolver will release a special Golden Gods issue of the magazine on May 24. The Golden Gods issue will include exclusive behindthe-scenes photos and interviews, most notably Mike Vallely’s post-acceptance speech interview where he had a run-in with Star Trek’s William Shatner, also acknowledged for his honorary Metalness. “I had just won the award, performed with Devil Driver and then walked off the stage and saw William Shatner. I was on Cloud Nine, man. He walked right up to me and said, “You look like you’re in top form!” I really was.” Fans chose the winner by voting online prior to the event. Nominees for Most Metal Athlete were:Chris Cole (pro skateboarding) Dan Hardy (Mixed Martial Arts) Toni Lydman (NHL hockey) The Miz (WWE wrestling) Jeremy Shockey (NFL football) & Mike Vallely (pro skateboarding).

“I don’t win a lot of shit. So, to be acknowledged and then win at the age of forty was pretty fucking cool, man. It meant a lot to me. I took it as something very significant, an acknowledgement of a lifetime of commitment to a certain vibe and attitude.”

GORUCK Challenge

– Winning Most Metal Athlete has inspired Mike to continue pushing himself beyond his limits by training and participating in the GORUCK Challenge – a nationwide Green Beret led challenge that will span 15-20 miles and include a collective of mentally and physically exhausting conditioning routines. Some of the proceeds go the Green Beret Foundation. Mike attributes his readiness for the challenge to the ability of his personal trainer Scot Prohaska to provide the conditioning he will need to complete the event. “By the time he completes the GORUCK Challenge,” said Prohaska, “there won’t be anything that those Green Berets can do to Mike that I haven’t already done to him.” The GORUCK Challenge will take place on May 27, 2011 in Las Vegas, beginning at 6:00pm. [Publisher’s Note: Revolt In Style feature-writer Eric Hendrikx will be doing the GORUCK Challenge with Mike Vallely as well as writing a feature on the event for an forthcoming lifestyle piece to be featured in Revolt In Style Magazine. “Competitive skateboarding, although never my forte or where I chose to put the emphasis in my career, has been something I actually have always valued. I think my stance on contests has been misinterpreted through the years as I’ve purposely moved away from them. But as a skater who still strives to push himself, I see the competitive arena as a place where I would like to return again for myself individually and also where I feel I can once again add something to the story and

By no means does Mike’s Green Beret training indicate a shift in his passion for skateboarding. In fact, at age 41, he will reenter the world of competitive skateboarding this summer with scheduled appearances at contests in Italy, England and Prague. As a street skater, Mike stands alone, as his reentry into the competitive arena at his age is unprecedented.

where I feel I can still contribute. With that being said, I’m really looking forward to getting overseas and making the rounds again, it’s been a long time. I only skate because I love it. I don’t feel any external pressures making me feel like I have to do anything. I don’t allow those kinds of pressures to affect me. But I do have internal pressures to push myself. That’s just me. I always have to put myself in environments and arenas where it’s balls to the wall.”

Mike has appeared as a major skateboard character in the highly successful Tony Hawk Pro Skater video game series, in which the fifth game in the series was based on Mike’s career.

Mike appeared in the movie The Hangover as Alan’s friend Neeco, delivering tuxedos from a van on the freeway.

Mike has been lead singer in several bands since 1985 including Mike V and the Rats, Revolution Mother as well as three solo albums.

Outside of skateboarding, Mike has held a professional career in music, film, television, stuntman work, professional wrestling and FHL hockey. Mike is also a board member of the Tony Hawk Foundation, which helps fund skateparks nationwide.

options for fighters, limiting their potential exposure as well as income. It also limits the potential for fight managers and teams, as the UFC only has so many spaces for competitors in its various weight classes.

f you are a follower of Mixed Martial Arts, the biggest news in recent months was the UFC’s purchase of rival promotion Strikeforce. While many MMA fans are divided on the pros and cons of this purchase, it is clear that the UFC has gained even more control of the market. It now has only its much smaller rival Bellator standing in the way of its complete dominance of the U.S. MMA scene.

So it is critically important for these managers and teams to stay as active as possible and seek out as many sources of competition for their fighters wherever they can. This means fighting in events whenever they present themselves, including internationally. Without an ability to get fights for their athletes, as well as properly prepare these athletes, managers and teams wither and dry up as fighters search for greener pastures.

I

If the UFC stays true to form, then Strikeforce will be run for a time as a separate promotion and then absorbed, just like the WEC and Pride, two other competitors the UFC acquired in the past. The upside for MMA is that the UFC is a juggernaut that is constantly moving forward and will keep on acquiring new fans as it expands its reach. This is good for the sport as it continues its quest for mainstream acceptance. The downside is that there are fewer

30  WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

Fortunately, that is not happening with San Diego MMA gym The Arena. Instead, in recent weeks The Arena proved why it is considered to have one of the most active MMA Teams in the world. The Arena Team had 10 of its Team members, as well as 2 additional fighters who finished their training camps at The Arena, battle it out in 7 different shows across 4 different countries. The results: an outstanding 10 wins. Even more noteworthy was the amazing

80% rate in which the fights ended by wins for The Arena Team in the 1st round. The Arena Team also had one of its members, Chris Cope, fight on this season of The Ultimate Fighter. And coming up shortly, The Arena has at least 12 more fights booked for its pros, as well as numerous shows set for its amateur MMA team to compete in. When many gyms and teams are struggling to stay afloat, how is The Arena continuing to expand and dominate? The reasons are threefold. The first is that The Arena has created an extremely tight-knit group. With many of its trainers and fighters coming from the military, The Arena knows the importance of running a professionally organized fighting unit where its members have each other’s backs. This ATeam or “The Brotherhood” as The Arena likes to call it is all-important. With its team members constantly pushing one another to succeed, The Arena fosters a competitive yet supportive environment where the operative phrase is “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another”.

The second reason for the team’s success is the extremely high level of professional coaching present at The Arena. This professionalism is carried throughout daily team practices, as well as in individual and customized training for its team members who have upcoming fights. Overall fight team training is run by standout MMA coaches Pat Speight and Jeff Clark, with other outstanding coaches available including 170 lb. contender Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos, who is a highly skilled trainer as well as fighter. The third reason the team is thriving is management. The majority of The Arena’s fighters are managed by Jeff Clark, who is not only a coach, but also one of the leading MMA managers in the industry. Jeff has an extensive network of international fight connections and has managed such notable fighters as Dominick Cruz and Diego Sanchez. Along with the rest of The Arena crew, Jeff’s mission is to continue to build one of the best fight teams in the world. To date, the mission is proceeding to plan. By Eric Hendrikx Photos by Chad Chomlack / Steve Rogers Whistler, Canada – a place of superlatives with the largest skiable terrain, longest ski season and longest lift-serviced vertical in North America, and host of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. It is consistently ranked as the number one mountain resort in North America. It’s surroundings offer distinctive natural beauty, epic skiing and snowboarding, and an almost limitless array of year-round activities including mountain biking, ziplining, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, hiking, - even dog sledding. Whistler Village – the social nucleus for tourists and locals – is a one-mile curvy stretch of pedestrian-only right-of-way, where one can find everything from accommodations and groceries to shopping, restaurants, cafés, bars and spas. And yet there are still many people who are just starting to hear about the size, diversity and international appeal of this spectacular resort. Any time of year is perfect to visit Whistler, but if you’re hunting for snow adventures, then you’ll want to visit between November and May. We chose to visit in Mid-April, during the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival (TWSSF), so that we could satisfy our quench for snowboarding in the mornings and then enjoy the live outdoor concerts and entertainment in the afternoons into the nights. And we weren’t disappointed. TWSSF proved to be a lot of fun and not only did we get to ride down the lower slopes to the sounds of bands including Tokyo Police Club and Broken Social Scene, but we had phenomenal snow conditions after a season total snowfall accumulation of forty-five feet. And the fun and entertainment didn’t end there – evenings never slow down during TWSSF, they’re loaded with film screenings, photography showdowns, and endless parties with internationally acclaimed DJs.

August - Crankworx Festival Whistler is a year round adventure with the obvious winter activities, but also one of the most popular mountain biking destinations in Canada, featuring Crankworx – a nine-day showcase of gravity-fueled and high-flying mountain biking action, with competitions ranging from downhill to slope style. The event also has pro-riding demos, live concerts, and all the parties one might crave to attend. Crankworx is the biggest event of the summer and attracts over 20,000 people to watch the best mountain bikers in the world. December - Whistler Film Festival The future of Sundance? Maybe. This four-day cinematic celebration showcases films from around the globe along with all of the snow sports and live music that accompany.

By far the most exhilarating adrenaline rushed activity we tried in Whistler. Stone and I both opted for the fasted and biggest drops – the Eagle tour. Once the eco-guides secure you into a stateof-the-art harness system, they drive you up the mountain to the starting point. After a short walk and instructions, they send you zipping across spans of up to 2,000 feet, where sometimes you are 200 feet above the ground. The tour flows through the forest and along a number of treetop bridges, lasting about three hours and showcases Whistler’s temperate rainforest and environmental sustainability. INTERVIEW

REID SPEED

BASSMONSTERS TOUR DEBUTING at SPIN NIGHTCLUB By Leslie Terhorst

P

LAY ME RECORDS, a Los Angeles based digital record label founded in 2009 by Reid Speed & Alexander Rosson. Drawing on the strength of Speed’s decade plus career as a pioneer of multi- genre bass music in the USA. 2010 saw Play Me rise to the top of the US dubstep market, with 3 #1s, over half of their releases hitting the top 10, and so much bass it spawned a sister label, Play Me Too. It’s time to unleash the power of Play Me upon the world. Play Me Records and Play Me Too bring you the “Bass Monster” tour presented with BEATPORT by Hippo & Squeeze hosted by Eric Yo! I sat down with the fem-phenom, dancefloor destroyer, the Bass Boss, Ms. Reid Speed. Her precise genre mashing mixing skills has developed a synergy with her crowds that are matched by none. Here’s what she had to say:

RIS: Tell me a little bit about the style of your music. I’ve heard you say, “it’s Hip-Hop, take out all the words, and add a lot of bass to it.” Can you elaborate, or does this about sum it up? REID: I’d say that to describe Dubstep to someone who knows nothing about dance music at all. To someone who knows, I’d say what I play is high energy, full-frequency response bass music. (Since I always play multiple genres per set) RIS: You are originally from NYC, and now you live in LA. How does the West Coast scene differ from the East Coast scene? REID: The scale of events is bigger on the West Coast, even in slow years, than the East Coast ever was at its prime. There are simply more people in SoCal who in turn have created larger subculture groups that sustain themselves in ways impossible with fewer patrons. And the general vibe is definitely more laid back in the West, except at the “Hollywood” type clubs. RIS: From your experience, how has DJing changed since you started back in 96’? REID: The whole industry has changed in so many ways! First off, the formats have changed multiple times in a very short time, from vinyl to cds to computers and beyond in half a generation. The paradigm of how music is sold- and how musical artists makes a living- has also changed. DJs used to work on mixing to get gigs, build up a reputation, and try and get a mix cd deal, which would get you touring. Today, if you want to be a touring DJ, you have to make tunes that chart to get an agent, who can get you gigs. But you are only as viable as what your music is doing right now. RIS: Do you think you have a lot more barriers to hurdle being a woman in this industry? REID: I think the barrier I find the worst is that of communication style. Women and men communicate differently, almost opposite at times when it comes to business. Men are more prone to ego trip, and this often induces frustration during business interactions when I simply wish to communicate and be respected as a peer. But being female or male, each comes with its own set of barriers. It’s how you deal with them that define your character. RIS: What’s your typical routine before heading onto the stage? REID: Land..eat dinner..shower...go to show 45-1 hr before set...have perhaps one drink (vodka redbull if its before 10:30, vodka soda if after), listen to opening DJ, go pee, procure water, rinse out the club.

RIS: Is it true, that you really don’t know what you are going to play before you go on? REID: It is true that I have never planned a set in my life. Half the enjoyment of DJing for me is feeling what the crowd wants and just vibing. RIS: Let’s talk about Play Me Records. You started it back in 09’, and in 2010 you were Best Dubstep Label. Such a huge accomplishment in such a short amount of time. What made you decide to start your own label, and what do you attribute such success to? REID: Thank you, and thanks for being tuned into and feeling what we are doing. It is an effort of the heart to bring beautiful gifts of music to the world. I started the label because I wanted a place artists who’s music I felt was sick could have a platform to be heard by enough people to make it worthwhile for them, and hopefully get a leg up into the mean world of dance music by way of someone who wasn’t out to take from them. I think the success has come from 2 things: from us being nice and doing things the opposite of how we saw it done for ages, and from my taste in music. Everyone has their own taste, and music is completely subjective, so the only measure of success is how much they sell. I am good at hearing what sounds good and what will work for us or not. RIS: You have such an amazing list of artist under your label. We’ve actually had a couple of them play for us (DJ Rabbit and Lea Luna) several years ago. How would a new, and up-in-coming artist submit their work to you? REID: We prefer that artists submit via private soundcloud link to soundcloud.com/playmerecords or by attaching an mp3 directly to us at playmerecords@gmail.com. Links to download mediafire, etc, are not appreciated- we will often skip those. If the song has been shared with many others on soundcloud, its not likely we will consider it unless its only a clip, and that clip would have to be amazing... we prefer full songs, if artists are worried about theft they should fade in and out the intros or add drops, but we never share people’s music that is submitted to us. RIS: So what’s new, and what’s next for you? REID: First up, I’m dropping a new mix for Borgore’s buygore.com site, over 40 tracks in 70 minutes of dubstep, moombahton, drumstep and drum & bass. We kickoff of the Bass Monster Tour sponsored by Beatport on June 3rd, then FS & myself have collaborated on a Bass Monster EP, featuring us singing on “Bass Monster” and a melodic number called “To The Sky”, which drop July 4th. There will be a video for the single and also a fun video promo for the tour. I am also working on an EP with our new signees Ishe & Dirt Monkey as well as a track with DJ Rap. And in addition to the Filth.fm “Bass Station” internet radio show we do each week, I will be starting to do a show on KISS FM DJ Skee’s new 24/7 internet radio station at skee.tv starting next week. Finally, New Blood of Dubstep Volume 2 will be released this summer, to unleash a brand new crop of producers from across the world. RIS: Tell us about your label party happening at Spin Nightclub REID: The Bass Monster Tour is sponsored by Beatport, and after the success of our preparty in LA in April, is kicking off June 3rd at Spin. The tour features myself; FS and Cyberoptics, as well as supporting cast of Play Me artists in each market. We are hitting most of North America this summer/fall. RIS: Any shout outs to friends, family, artists.REID: Big shouts to Alexander Rosson, my better half in life and Play Me, to all the amazing Play Me artists we have had the pleasure to work with in our time, and biggest shouts to all the fans and unsigned producers working tirelessly to be the next big thing, we are listening for you and love you!

RIS: How did you discover you had a passion for mixing? DJD: I got into DJing back in 98’ ... I had always been into music and was infatuated with Beastie Boys and the way they incorporated so many samples and scratches into their songs. RIS: Who influenced you to start DJing? DJD: My main influence came from going to some underground warehouse parties back in the day and hearing house music for the first time. Soon after I started going to raves and seeing the crazy energy that the music created...was hooked from that point on! RIS: What’s your favorite kind of music to play? DJD: Like I said, I love all kinds of music, but I came up as a house and breakbeat DJ so those are definitely my favorites. It’s nice that the music world today is all about the house/trance craze and making it more commercial so you can actually play and people love it where as in the past half the people would just have a blank stare on their face before asking for “something I can dance too”

DJ SCHOENY

Revolt In Style met DJ Schoeny’s (aka Justin Schoenenberger) back in 2007. When he was a bare chested, muscle bound canvas, just waiting for someone to come along and set him apart from the rest. “LIFE IS GOOD” is the first thing you’ll see when you meet DJ Schoeny, it’s tattooed straight across his knuckles. It’s a motto that embodies the true sense of who and what he is all about, in life and as an artist. These tattooed letters on DJ Schoeny’s hands are only the beginning of the inked art emblazoned on his 6”2” frame. Depending on his state of mind, his hands may not be the only tattooed part of him visible. Weather he’s dressed like a lady at Eden, or wearing dolphin shorts and a sports bra at Henry’s pub, Schoeny’s inked art captures this artist’s state of mind, as well as provides a roadmap of the journey that had led him to his one and only true love, DJing in San Diego. When you ask what Schoeny loves about his job, the answer is always “ I love meeting people, especially people that aren’t afraid to come up to the booth and chat after the show.” But Bitches Beware, there is nothing that he hates more, than some drunk, mean chick and her “Blondetourage”, coming up and demanding songs, “just be nice,” he asks politely. But most importantly with DJ Schoeny’s, IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC! Schoeny gravitates towards open format, freestyle, hood house, and electro. The STYLE of his “mashups,” doesn’t necessarily serve up his style accurately. His ability to mix polar opposites together and make it work, it is beyond comprehension. For instance he took an old hip-hop beat and mixed it in with Reading Rainbow. No matter who or what he mixes or mashes up, he seems to create something totally unique every time. Schoeny masterfully folds in lyric and beat, whisking up a product of his own flavor, one that can be sampled when in person during one of his ever-unique sets, or at one’s own leisure while thumping one of his latest free downloads, such as “#winning” or “live at Eden.” The experience of witnessing a performance by DJ Schoeny certainly speaks for itself, yet is not a difficult one to acquire, as DJ Schoeny continues to make his rounds throughout San Diego, expanding his venue list as time ticks by; in fashioned count, of course. With all the DJ’s jockeying for position here in San Diego, I would have to say DJ Schoeny’s passion for creating his own style of music has put him in pole position, racing to the top. www.facebook.com/djschoenySF www.twitter.com/djschoeny www.starryeyedmusic.com

Nine Millimeter Earphones RIS: You play anywhere from the beach area, to downtown, to North County (Del Mar), do you change your style depending on the location? DJD: For sure! You definitely have to adapt to different locations.... The beach is definitely a younger crowd so they tend to like more of the house/dubstep/indie stuff going on these days. Where as downtown is kind of a mix of all ages and you can get away with some old school here and there. Bottom line is you have to just play the crowd no matter where your at...find out what they’re vibing on, then create some energy and build the room accordingly! RIS: Favorite Grind Spot? DJD: Favorite restaurant? That’s hard, I like so many... Hmmm....I love Leilani’s in PB for lunch, place is amazing and always seems to be some industry peeps hanging out. Can’t go wrong with Sushi on the Rock, and when it comes to fine dining, I LOVE Oceanaire! RIS: Favorite Watering Hole? DJD: Love PB Shore Club, or Beachwood when I’m bouncing around PB and if I’m downtown, it’s a must to swing by Side Bar for a fine spirit! RIS: Favorite Place to Relax? DJD: If I want to relax, I usually just stay home and watch movies or read (yes I can read...and the books aren’t all pictures!)

SOUND ADVICE

HEAR THIS Reviews By Leslie Terhorst

VOLKAB KOMPANY - QUIT SLEEP

Genre Hip-Hop/Electronic/Funk

VOKAB IS BACK!!!!!! They say good things come to those who wait. And with the release of their new album Quit Sleep this statement has never been truer. Robbie Gallo aka Rob Hurt, Matt Burke aka Burkey Baby-MC’s and singers of the band, Geoff Nigl-Keyboard, Aaron Cheatham-bass, Spencer Sharpe-Violinist, Jeremy Holmes-Guitar, and Alvaro Nunez-Drums are back, and dare I say better than ever. The synergy and the sounds that these guys create together are unsurpassable. Although I felt this way about “The New Kong” and they seemed to have proven me wrong. VK has teamed up with amazing artist like Solovox & Deploi featured in “Gunslinger” and Karen Mills in “Unpredictable.” “Take You To Space” brought in Lincoln Parish (Cage the Elephant) on guitar. One of my favorite things about these guys is how they incorporate randoms into their songs. “Gangsterer Than Me” by Signal Path throws in one of the voices from a MacBook, and I love the chipmunks singing Toto’s 80’s hit “Africa” in the opening of “Know Me Now.” Also, the rough crackling sound (as if you’re actually listening to record) of title track “Quit Sleep” featuring some of my favorite artists, Luchyiam, Apualo8, and Karen Mills. It’s these touches that set VK apart. Pick up a copy at their show on June 3- Winston’s, San Diego or scan the QR Code on the back of the CD Cover and order it online. Either way this is a must have. Available now!

Flogging Molly – Speed of Darkness Genre: Irish-American Celtic punk

Speed of Darkness, the new album from celebrated Celtic punk ensemble Flogging Molly, is set for a May 31st release on the group’s newly founded Borstal Beat Records. Speed of Darkness is Flogging Molly’s fifth, and arguably most important album. In the words of lead singer and songwriter Dave King, “It wasn’t the album we set out to write. It became the album we had to write.” Speed of Darkness was written in Detroit, MI and takes a hardnosed look at the economic collapse in the US: the causes and the direct effect it has had on everyday people. The Motor City serves as the album’s muse and one of the biggest examples of what has gone wrong. While Speed of Darkness attacks much of the greed and ignorance responsible for where we are, the album also delivers a message of hope, humanity and the resilience of mankind. It reminds us how we grow stronger when faced with adversity and how we bond together and become more involved. The political tones continue through the Speed of Darkness’ 12-song track list, with titles like “Revolution”, “Don’t Shut ‘Em Down”, and “Rise Up”. But, the band’s traditional roots so shine on with songs like “The Heart of the Sea”, “Present State of Grace” and “A Prayer For Me In Silence”, a duet with fiddler Bridget Regan, who is a Detroit native and the wife of King. Produced by Ryan Hewitt (Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Avett Brothers.)

Lady Gaga – Born This Way

Genre: Pop/Dance/Electronic

Trying to figure out Lady Gaga is like trying to figure out a Rubik’s Cube. You can twist and turn her all you want. Look at her from every angle. Try every compromising position, to achieve the ultimate goal of trying to solve this enigma. Unfortunately, this will only make you cock your head like a dog, and get you even more confused. Or you can look directly at the uncompromising center square of her being. Then, and only then, is when all the pieces fall into place. The answer is; the lady has true talent! Her quest to save us from ourselves, through piece, love, compassion, tolerance, and understanding, is so perfectly expressed in the opening soliloquy to the video for Born This Way stating, “How can I protect something so perfect, without evil?” Despite the fact that “Born This Way” sounds exactly like Madonna’s “Respect Yourself,” I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and from Gaga’s standpoint, notoriety. This isn’t the kind of album that leaves a listener short of words. Everything about Born This Way is meant to provoke a reaction, and as such, it is a perfect expression of Lady Gaga’s attention-hungry public persona. Those who were disappointed by the derivative title track (like I was) and disjointed second single “Judas” will be pleased to know that there are much better songs on “Born This Way.” The world has already heard one of them -- “The Edge of Glory,” which features Clarence Clemons on saxophone. On the shelf now, and you don’t have go to go to Farmville to get a copy, Target’ has it.

Dark Heavens Story and Words by Mr. Party Metal

DARK HEAVENS was born in California, where metal is common language up and down the state. After of crazily-costumed night at a Ratt show, the trio of friends emerged from the hazy fanspace to see the clouds part and the heavens peek through the darkness. As dawn broke, a new metal band emerged.

I got a very simple answer from all of them: “If it’s loud, it’s cool.” Fun and light with a hard edge, the lyrics and riffs are like those you would blast during a backyard ramp skateboard session. Drew’s bass sound has balls - raw, but finely tailored and a perfect complement to Anthony’s young and restless drum beats.

Bassist Drew Roulette is known for his work with the indie-rock band DREDG, seen at Coachella and respected internationally for their unique sound. The band just released its sixth album, Mr. Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy. Donovan Dresti, the singer and guitarist, is a proskateboarder who has be en sponsored by Rekon, Anarchy Eyewear, and Jagermeister. Anthony Olyaee has been in multiple bands such as DELTA ACTIVITY and is teacher of drum theory.

DARK HEAVENS sounds like a good time on Saturday night with your friends, and maybe some hot chicks. Their debut EP is track-full of witty, animated song titles, such as “Heavy Drinkin’,” “Rock You Chewbacca,” and “Lips of Leather,” that make it clear that these guys are here to play… hard.

So the question is, how did these three metal men decide on this sound?

ENVIRONMENT

MOTHER EARTH NEWS REVOLTINSIDER

MANUFACTURING STOKE WORLD PREMIERE On May 23rd the Who’s Who of the surfing and environmental world gathered at Bird’s Surf Shed to support director Pierce Kavanaugh’s release of his latest documentary, Manufacturing Stoke. The movie is an amazing look behing the scenes of the surfing industry’s manufacturing practices. No other sport is so intrinsically linked to nature, and yet, in becoming the multi-billion dollar industry it is today, a great paradox has risen. Surfers are indeed directly connected to the earth’s pulse and yet a majority of the materials used are environmentally toxic. For more go to www.manufacturingstoke.com and see our interview with Pierce online at www.revoltinstyle.com

BOTTLE OF THE FUTURE? DISPOSABLE WATER BOTTLES MADE ENTIRELY FROM PLANTS... It is estimated that only two out of ten plastic bottles make it to the recycle bin. The other eight find their way into landfills where they leach toxic chemicals into the ground and water supply. Most recently San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders’ office and the Environmental Services Division announced a series of administrative regulations to limit the City’s purchase of single-use plastic water bottles and plastic foam products. With Americans purchasing over 50 billion bottles of water each year, coming up with an eco-friendly solution to this problem is imperative. Although there is a growing trend

encouraging people to drink tap water from reusable bottles, this is not always possible especially in areas where the tap water is not safe to drink. Luckily, though, alternative plant based bottles have been developed using bioplastics rather than oil. Bioplastic is a form of plastic made from biomass such as corn starch and vegetable oil. Unlike plastic products made from petroleum oil, plant based bottles and other products made from bioplastic are biodegradable. Specifically, they are created to be compostable and should be put in a compost bin rather than the trash can. This makes them a lot more Earth-friendly than the regular water bottles in use today. Making plant based bottles is generally more environmentally friendly than their oil based counterparts. Most companies are able to use less energy and resources to make bioplastic products. More and more companies are switching over to plant based bottles for their products. Renewal is a bottle water company that uses bioplastic containers to hold its water. As the world moves towards sustainability, you will begin to see more and more products made from plant based plastics. However, consumers must support the development of these products by closing the loop and purchasing them whenever they can. For more info visit their site at www.renewal-water.com

IT”S A FACT: “Each year, humankind adds six to eight billion tons of carbon to the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels and destroying forest, pumping up the concentration of greenhouse gases responsible for global warming - an effect that could raise temperatures by three to ten degrees by the year 2050”

YOU HAVE A CHOICE

Did you know Biodiesel is actually less expensive than Diesel? Biodiesel is a clean-burning replacement fuel that can be used in existing diesel engines. Made from renewable sources such as vegetable oils, recycled cooking grease and animal fats, it is the first and only commercial-scale fuel widely used today that meets the Environmental Protection Agency’s definition as an Advanced Biofuel. Along with significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, it dramatically reduces nearly every major toxic air pollutant, according to the EPA. Currently a blend of Biodiesel is available at the pump at Pearson Fuels on El Cajon Blvd off the15. For a significant saving (compared to the cost of regular diesel) you can safely run B20 BioDiesel in your diesel engines with little or no modifications. Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics. Revolt In Style has been running B99 and B20 biodiesel in our Ford F-250 (7.4 litre turbocharged V-8) for the past three years with no ill effects. In fact, quite the opposite. First off: We lost the sickening stench of diesel that gave way to a kinder aroma of...french fries?? Sort of. Second we gained about 4-5 miles to the gallon. The big Revolt truck gets about 20 miles to the gallon now. That’s a big improvement, and we feel great doing it. Another benefit, a smoother running, quieter engine. We received more horsepower without the signature thick black smoke billowing out of the tail pipe like regular diesel vehicles. (A certified mechanic shared with us the fact that the natural lubrication of the product will actually extend the life of the engine. He said we could expect a 500K engine life-span) So if you can save money, be kinder to your vehicle and help save the planet all at the same time...WHY WOULD YOU CONTINUE TO PUMP REGULAR DIESEL?

Recycled plots are all the rage this summer as most film titles are followed by a number -- The Hangover 2, Harry Potter 7.2, Cars 2, Pirates 4, Kung Fu Panda 2... well you get the idea.

MINI REVIEWS

WATCH THIS By Beth Accomando The Hangover 2

(Warner Bros.) The Hangover 2 is The Hangover all over again but in Thailand. The engaging trio of Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis are back and ready for more shenanigans. Even Ken Jeong (“It’s funny cause he’s fat”) and Mike Tyson make appearances.

Green Lantern

(Warner Bros.) Marvel is looking to dominate the summer with both Thor and Captain America coming out. But DC is trying to make an impact with its long anticipated Green Lantern. Ryan Reynolds stars as the titular superhero and despite the fact that he has a genuine hard body, they are giving him CGI abs when he dons the green suit. What’s up with that? We’ll have to see if the summer is big enough to handle 3 superhero films just weeks apart. Go green. Opens June 17.

X-Men: First Class (20th Century Fox)

This one’s not a sequel but it’s a reboot of a franchise that never quite fulfilled its potential. This time around we are given the backstory to the X-Men’s Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr who would become Professor X and Magneto respectively. Set in 1963, the film uses the civil rights movement and social unrest as a backdrop. KickAss’ Matthew Vaughn directs with James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender in the leads. I am hopeful about this one. Opens June 3.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Disney)

Johnny Depp just couldn’t say no to the yet another Pirates sequel and the hefty paycheck that comes with it. So Depp is back as Captain Jack Sparrow but this time Keira Knightley has been replaced by Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane has signed on for villainy duty. The faces may be new but nothing else is and the stale formula is set to be recycled two more times! Aaaargh!

The Tree of Life (Fox Searchlight)

Terence Malick takes a long time to make his films so when they finally arrive it is cause for celebration. It’s been six years since The New World but we now have a new Malick film on its way. The Tree of Life stars Brad Pitt as a stern father with Sean Penn playing the son as an adult. Malick is a true visualist and the images in his films often convey more than the dialogue. Make sure to see this one on the big screen. Opens June 10.
