PUBLISHERS NOTE I have found over the years that Pacific Beach is without a doubt the greatest place to call home. This may sound a bit silly and condescending, but I believe it true. Over the years I have had to leave on a couple of occasions. A couple of years in L.A. running some big clubs. A stint in North County with a crazy blonde, some high rolling years in Point Loma...but eventually I find my way back to Pacific Beach. This is where I call home. If I want non-stop action and wall to wall eye candy, all I need to do is take a walk down Garnet Avenue on any given weekend night. Ya know...after 20 years in the nightclub industry I sometimes feel like I’ve seen it all. But that just ain’t true. You never know what you’ll see on Garnet. The variety of clubs, restaurants and shops seem to change with the seasons. The stream of people visiting is endless. Same faces, new names, new year. The little run down dive bars and gritty diners all over P.B. are slowly being replaced by a more upscale and business savy merchant. This leaves me torn between the nostalgia of the 1.00 drink nights and free happy hour buffets. But the joy of drinking from clean glassswear and not worrying how long my food has been sitting out, wins every time. The new kids on the block like Johnny V’s or Tower 23 are changing the way we party in P.B. Honestly...for the better. Then on the other hand take a walk up or down the beach on any morning (earlier than 7) and you’ll be lucky if you run into anyone at all. The surfbreaks are fairly empty this time of year and if you wanted, you could soul surf completely alone (with the occasional visit from our boys in grey) till your heart’s content. If you’ve done it you know...there is nothing like sitting alone in the lineup, waiting for the next set...doin’ abso-freakin-lutely nuthin’. No phones, no email, no nuthin’. Sweet. LEGEND OF VALENTINE’S DAY Death Sentances, Arranged Marriages, Murder and Deceipt... aint love grand?

The first legend and perhaps the best known, began in Rome, when the Emperor, Claudius II, was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. “Claudius the Cruel” as he was called, was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that Roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. So, he cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome! The good Saint Valentine, who was a priest in Rome, in the year 269 A.D., together with his friend Saint Marius, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, he was sentenced to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. Before his death on the 14th day of February, it is alleged that he wrote a young girl a letter, which he signed “ From your Valentine”. Then they bashed his head in. Another legend says that Valentine’s Day started in ancient Rome, on February 14th, a holiday to honor Juno the Goddess of women and marriage. Then, the following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia. In those days, the lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, on the eve of the festival of Lupercalia, the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl’s name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry. Most would end horribly. One legend tells the story of Cupid and the mortal maiden, Psyche. Venus was jealous of the beauty of Psyche, and ordered Cupid to punish the mortal. But instead, Cupid fell deeply in love with her. He took her as his wife, but as a mortal she was forbidden to look at him. Psyche was happy until her sisters convinced her to look at Cupid. Cupid punished her by departing. Their lovely castle and gardens vanished with him and Psyche found herself alone in an open field As she wandered to find her love, she came upon the temple of Venus. Wishing to destroy her, the goddess of love gave Psyche a series of tasks, each harder and dangerous than the last. For her last task Psyche was given a little box and told to take it to the underworld & also warned not to open the box. Temptation would overcome Psyche and she opened the box. But instead of finding beauty, she found deadly slumber. Cupid found her lifeless on the ground. He gathered the sleep from her body and put it back in the box. I first met Paul Kintner at the Nimitz trails just outside of Ocean Beach back in the fall of 1999. I had heard about the trails from some kids up by state. When I got there I thought I was alone. I was sizing up the rhythm section and slapping on some pads when I hear some rumbling coming from what looked like a thick pile of branches. A cloud of smoke followed by a deep cough came bellowing out of the thicket. Moments later Paul Kintner came busting out of what I now realized was the smokers pit dug in to the side of the hill. After a brief introduction I got on my bike and gave it a run through one of the lines. About five jumps through the section I get this feeling like I’m being followed. I look back mid air and see that Paul is right behind me and gaining speed. By the last jump he was right on my ass. Not to be shown up I decided to throw a bar spin over the last set. The bars caught on my knee pads and I went down like a pile of bricks. Not a second later Paul crashes into me, flips over my bike and lands on top of what was left of me and my shattered ego. So there we are two complete strangers lying in a pile of loose dirt, like a couple of preschoolers playing in the sand box. After a few of laughs at my experience we pulled ourselves up right, slammed down a binger and kept riding. I thought Paul was a bid of a prick to follow so close on my first run. And 8 years later Paul’s still a bit of a prick, but he’s one of those people that no matter how much they piss you off you’d rather have them around than be alone. Paul moved back to the Seattle area a few years ago and from what I hear he’s still ripping it up. I caught up will Paul while on a North West road trip. After a long night of partying in unfamiliar territory we decided to head to the Hood River skate park for a quick session. Koastal Kaos #4 Ocean Beach Pier Dog Day Afternoons

Scoop by Eric Johnson Photos by Toby Ogden Built in 1966 and measuring in at 1,971-feet, the Ocean Beach Pier is the longest pier on the West Coast of America. Jutting out from “Dog Beach” and populated by community consisting of all walks of life — surfers, bikers, freaks and tax paying, god fearing families — it’s what Southern California is all about. Also known as O.B., Ocean Beach served as the backdrop for the fourth round of the No Fear-backed Koastal Kaos Series. Beautiful, sunny weather and chamber of commerce 3-to-6-foot surf all added up to such a great contest that even Fox 6 News was forced get the cameras and microphones out and send the mobile unit down to sand to check things out. It was the Boy’s division (ages 13-14) opening the curtain on Koastal Kaos round four on Saturday, January 20. In super-glossy head high surf and with double points on the chopping block, the ever-consistent Dale Timm surfed very well and very consistantly to

Justin Wiegand snake the win over Cooper Jones, who in his own special way, was ripping and tearing things up all afternoon. In fact a dazzling eight-point ride on his first wave — punctuated with an insane tail free move — put Cooper in position to win the O.B. contest, but the lack of a high point back up score left him in second, wondering what might and could have been. Sam Orozco and Austin Ganz surfed with spirit and verve to place third and fourth, respectively. Taylor Clark and Mike Delegge (making his first final) placed fifth and sixth overall. Hot off a win at Oceanside Harbor on New Year’s Eve, Matt Lewis slammed home his domination in the Grom’s class by winning his second consecutive Koastal Kaos contest by edging out runner-up Taylor Clark. Third place in the under-12 classification was Jacob Halstead, while Trevor Thornton — who held the Kaos points heading into O.B. — was a bit off the pace, placing fifth, and doing so, dropped down to second place on the Koastal Kaos leader board. Taylor Clark heads into round five of the Koastal Kaos Series at La Jolla Shores as the Grom’s ratings leader. In the Master’s divisions (for surfers age 30+), Brazilian Yu Fu Penrose won for the third time on the Kaos tour. Pedro Diaz, also hailing from South 40

America, kept Penrose honest with a close second place finish. Unfortunately, Diaz couldn’t snag the solid back up wave needed to take the measure of Penrose. Craig Macia had his best result to date, finishing third just ahead of Ed Custodio. Keith Bybee and Paul Pugliesi surfed well all day but couldn’t find the waves they needed in the final. The two surfers placed in fifth and sixth overall.

Erin Rietow simply blew her competition out of the water in Ocean Beach, at one point, shredding all the way to the beach with a wave score of 9.0. BreAnne Custodio and Alissa Lentz finished second and third. Danielle Dickerson just missed the top three, placing fourth. Coco Jones was fifth. Sunday’s Men’s classification final, on many levels, was a full on battle. With the O.B. waves opening up a bit more, the premiere surfers of the Koastal Kaos Series were able to optimize their skill sets, wringing out every wave for all its worth. Yu Fu Penrose surfed a great heat, grabbing one of the best waves of the weekend, going top to bottom on the six-footer three times. Justin Wiegand then dropped in on the very next wave, pulling a huge layback snap, then throwing caution to the sea

breeze, going for a front side aerial (rather than playing it safe with a floater). Unfortunately, he didn’t pull it but his bravado and go for broke attitude truly personified the competitive ethos of Koastal Kaos (i.e. “Go Big or Go the Hell Home!) When the air horn was sounded to end the final round, it was Yu Fu Penrose alighting from the water as the winner. His second win of the weekend, Dog Beach certainly proved kind to Penrose. Matt Pagan drove way down the San Diego Freeway from Los Angeles to take third. Meanwhile, one place back in fourth on Sunday, Rick Takahashi surfed well and left O.B. with the Men’s division series points’ lead. The Junior’s division (aged 15-17) paddled out for their final heat late Sunday afternoon in unfavorable conditions. With the wind having wind come up significantly and with the tide running out, the waves, both literally and figuratively, lost face. Nonetheless, Gabe Garcia made the best of the situation, using smooth, quick surfing and lightning fast snaps to take a resounding victory over the rapidly improving Tim Senneff Junior. (As a noteworthy sidebar, Senneff’s powerful surfing garnered him the Koastal Kaos “Featured Surfer” Award for the month). Dave Suhadolnik took a break from his NSSA tour of duty to drive out of Ocean Beach with the third place trophy.

North County Fight Club The Rise of Eddie Sanchez.

By Joel Carrillo (staff writer for Boxingfanatics.com) North County Fight Club has been in the fight game for over seven years and has seen Mixed Martial Arts grow and change with the passing years. What concerned NCFC, however, were the things that didn’t change. “We saw fighters being taken advantage of by managers and promoters who claimed to have the fighters best interests at heart but who only cared about lining their pockets,” NCFC executives recently stated in a phone interview. Enter North County Fight Club. Both being fighters, and black belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Jeff Clark and Matt Stansell understood that fighters are susceptible to managers who promise them the world and deliver little more than broken dreams and frustration. The “yang” in this equation is business sense coupled with their desire to fill a niche in fight management. Clark and Stansell were exposed to the dark underbelly of the fight game and are very familiar with the nuances of backroom dealings among managers and promoters. They first started helping their friends fight in un-sanctioned bouts on Indian reservations in the late 90’s prior to the State of California officially recognizing and sanctioning Mixed Martial Arts as an organized sport. This baptism by fire allowed them to learn the fight management business from the bottom up.

Seven years later NCFC can boast of having a stable of over 30 fighters, several of which ply their trade in the prestigious UFC, and a prominent presence in the tight knit San Diego fight community. One example of North County Fight Club’s managerial prowess is the meteoric rise of Eddie Sanchez. “Sanchez is a fighter who responds to adversity, no matter what’s been thrown at him in the ring, he has found a way to win,” Clark commented regarding Sanchez. Indeed, in eight fights Eddie has gone from fighting locally to knocking out Mario Neto in a fight seen by a nationwide audience on a Pay Per View UFC card due to North County Fight Club’s management savvy. Before it became a marketing tool used by major corporations and ad execs, “indie” meant independent – as in independent music, film and art created outside the mainstream, without corporate financing. The definition still applies to the San Diego Indie Music Fest. The 12-hour musical blowout now in its third year is a celebration of all things indie, starting with the music and extending to the businesses and artists involved. Festival co-executive producers Danielle LoPresti and Alicia Champion, both musicians themselves, created the festival with a DIY sensibility on a shoestring budget. Fishbone headlines this year, the veteran funk/metal/ska band that went from indie to Sony and back again. Also featured is Redcar, a new project by Heather Grody (The Murmurs, Gush), local favorites Al Howard & The K23 Orchestra and their special blend of afro-protest funk fusion, rock/reggae/country group Bargain Music, Amandla (featuring Claude Coleman of Ween), Danielle LoPresti & The Masses, Alicia Champion and others to be announced. More than 70 independent artists and bands from all over California and beyond will perform, running the musical gamut from rock, pop, jazz and folk to R&B, hip hop, Latin, house and spoken word. “The idea is to show people what indie music is, how outstanding, how diverse it is, and how to find it,” said LoPresti. “Indie does not mean less professional. It does not mean garage band. It means independently owned, smaller, and very often more colorful, more risky, more unique, more varied.” It is a celebration, according to LoPresti and Champion, of “that which makes your city unique.” The Indie Music Fest happens March 3 on seven stages throughout North Park. The behavior of Lady Sovereign and Jelly D was widely reported online, as well as on more traditional media such as TRL. However, she has a following in the United States and has co-headlined a tour with The Streets, with whom she appeared in a remix for his song “Fit But You Know It.” Lady Sovereign’s cult following was again boosted after she recorded an attack on singer Jentina with “Sad Ass Strippa,” a play on words of Jentina’s song “Bad Ass Strippa.” Lady Sovereign expresses a unique perspective of youth culture that’s previously been a hidden voice. An MC, lyricist, and producer, she’s the alternative microphone vandal with lyrics that hit like left and right hooks, whether subjects are light or weighty. She’s also product of ‘90s youth culture and technology. Internet forums and the influence of discerning music blogs greatly helped to solidify her early popularity and attract intense media interest, even prior to releasing any songs. (It was through the Internet where she first offered her first rhymes at age 14 and met her longtime DJ, Frampster.) While at a gig at the famous Bay Area venue The Filmore (a replacement for a gig she had previously walked out on), Lady Sovereign was challenged to a rap battle by Jelly Donut (real name Andrew Bancroft, a bay area writer and sketch comedian with SF based group Killing My Lobster and IllBilly Productions). “Jelly D” was a friend of Zach Slow, who successfully campaigned via his website [10] for a date with Lady Sovereign. While the date was successful, Lady Sovereign had insulted Slow later in the San Francisco Chronicle. This had led to a small war of words.
