of sin, that I may walk in Your holy light all my life and even forevermore. Amen.

Make haste, O God, to deliver me. Make haste to help me, O Lord. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, forevermore. Amen.

The Canticle Come, Holy Spirit, and fill the hearts of Your faithful people and kindle in them the fire of Your love. Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. Come, Holy Spirit, and fill the hearts of Your faithful people and kindle in them the fire of Your love.

The Confession of Sin Almighty God, heavenly Father: I have sinned against You through my own fault, in thought, word, and deed. For the sake of the suffering, death, and resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, forgive me all my sin, and bring me to everlasting life. Amen.

THE LITANY Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary, pp. 137-139 Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy upon us.

By Your Baptism, Fasting and Temptation; By Your Agony and Bloody Sweat; By Your Cross and Passion; By Your precious Death and Burial; By Your glorious Resurrection and Ascension; And by the coming of the Holy Ghost, the Comforter: Help us, good Lord.

Christe eleison. Christ, have mercy upon us. Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy upon us. O Christ, hear us. O Christ, hear us. O God the Father in heaven, Have mercy upon us.

In all time of our tribulation; In all time of our prosperity; In the hour of death; And in the Day of Judgment: Help us, good Lord.

O God the Son, Redeemer of the world, Have mercy upon us.

We poor sinners do beseech You; To hear us, O Lord God.

O God the Holy Ghost, true Comforter, Have mercy upon us.

And to lead and govern Your holy Christian church in the right way; To preserve all pastors and servants of Your Church in the true knowledge and understanding of Your Word, and in holiness of life; To put an end to all godless teaching and causes of offense; To bring into the way of truth all who have erred and are deceived; To beat down Satan under our feet; To send faithful laborers into Your harvest; To accompany Your Word with Your Spirit and grace; To raise up those who fall, and to strengthen those who stand; And to comfort and help the faint-hearted and the distressed: We beseech You to hear us, good Lord.

Be gracious unto us. Spare us, good Lord. Be gracious unto us. Help us, good Lord. From all sin; From all error; From all evil; Good Lord, deliver us. From the temptations and assaults of the devil; From sudden and evil death; From disease and famine; From war and bloodshed; From sedition and rebellion; From storms and natural disaster; From all calamity by fire and water; And from everlasting death: Good Lord, deliver us.

To give to all nations peace and concord; To preserve our country from discord and contention; To direct and defend our government, and all in authority;

By the mystery of Your holy Incarnation; By Your holy Nativity; 3

Lord, have mercy upon us.

And to bless and keep all who administer justice, and all our people: We beseech You to hear us, good Lord.

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

To behold and sustain all who are in danger, necessity and tribulation; To protect all who travel; To preserve all women in the perils of childbirth; To strengthen and keep all sick persons and young children; To set free all who are innocently imprisoned; To defend and provide for all fatherless children and widows; And to have mercy on all people: We beseech You to hear us, good Lord.

I. The Lord has not dealt with us according to our sins: The Lord has not punished us according to our iniquities. Lord God Almighty, You do not fail to hear the sighs of the contrite nor disregard the longing of troubled hearts: Behold our prayer which we bring before You in our need and graciously hear us, so that all that strives against us of both the devil and men may come to naught and be scattered by Your good counsel, to the end, that, unharmed by all temptation, we may thank You with Your Church and praise You at all times; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen.

To forgive our enemies, persecutors, and slanderers, and to turn their hearts; To give and preserve to our use the fruits of the earth; And graciously to hear our prayers: We beseech You to hear us, good Lord. O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God; We beseech You to hear us. O Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; Have mercy upon us.

II. We have sinned with our fathers: We have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly. Lord God, You take no pleasure in the death of poor sinners and would not willingly let them perish, but desire that they should turn from their ways and live: We heartily pray that You would avert the punishment that we have deserved by our sins, and tenderly grant us Your boundless mercy that we may walk in newness of life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen.

O Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; Have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; Grant us Your peace. O Christ, hear us. O Christ, hear us. Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy upon us.

III. Yet the Lord’s anger is but for a moment: His pleasure endures for life. O God, whose nature is always to have mercy and to forgive: Receive our humble petition; and, although we are tied and

Christe eleison. Christ, have mercy upon us. Kyrie eleison. 4

bound by the heavy chain of our sins, let the mighty pity of Your great mercy free us, to the honor of Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen. IV. O Lord, enter not into judgment with Your servant: For in Your sight no one living shall be justified. Lord God, heavenly Father, You know that we are not able to withstand the many and great dangers which attack our human weakness: Grant us strength in body and soul, that by Your help we may overcome whatever troubles us because of our sins; for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. V. Call upon me, says the Lord, in the day of trouble: I will deliver you, and you will glorify me. Almighty and everlasting God, through Your Holy Spirit You sanctify and rule the whole Church: Hear our prayer and graciously grant that Your Church may serve You in true faith, by the grace of Your Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen. VI. Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name: Deliver us, and provide atonement for our sins, for Your name’s sake. Almighty God, You have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our supplications to You, and have promised that wherever two or three are gathered together in Your name, You will grant their requests: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of Your servants, as may be most expedient for them; grant us in this world knowledge of Your truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

THE SUFFRAGES Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary, pp. 140-141 (The Suffrages may be said at Matins or Vespers, immediately after the Canticle. If used as a separate Office of Prayer, they may begin with a Hymn and the Invocation.)

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body, and the Life ď ˜ everlasting. Amen.

Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christe eleison. Christ, have mercy upon us. Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy upon us.

Lord, be merciful to me; Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You. Return, O Lord! How long? And have compassion on Your servants. Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, Just as we hope in You. Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness, And let Your saints shout for joy. O Lord, save our rulers, Let them hear us when we call. Save Your people and bless Your inheritance; Shepherd them also, and lift them up forever. Remember Your congregation, Which You have purchased of old. Peace be within your walls, Prosperity within your palaces. Let us pray for those of the faith who are not present with us: Save Your servants who trust in You. Let us pray for the broken-hearted and the captives: Redeem Israel, O God, out of all their troubles. Send them help from the sanctuary, And strengthen them out of Zion. Hear my prayer, O Lord, And let my cry come before You.

Amen. I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From there He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

The Psalm (Matins Ps. 130, Vespers Ps. 51) PSALM 130 - Out of the `depths I have cried/ to `You, O LORD; 2 Lord, `hear my voice!/ Let Your ears be attentive To the voice of my `supplications. 6

12

If You, LORD, should mark `iniquities,/ O Lord, `who could stand? 4 But there is for`giveness with You,/ That `You may be feared. 5 I wait for the LORD, `my soul waits,/ And in His `word I do hope. 6 My soul `waits for the Lord/ More than those who watch `for the morning; Yes, `more than those/ who watch `for the morning. 7 O Israel, `hope in the LORD;/ For with the LORD `there is mercy, And `with Him/ is abun`dant redemption. 8 And He shall re`deem Israel/ From all his `iniquities.

Restore to me the joy of `Your salvation,/ And uphold me by Your gen`erous Spirit. 13 Then I will teach trans`gressors Your ways,/ And sinners shall be con`verted to You. 14 Deliver me from the guilt of `bloodshed, O God,/ The God of `my salvation, And my tongue `shall sing aloud/ of `Your righteousness. 15 O Lord, `open my lips,/ And my mouth shall `show forth Your praise. 16 For You do not desire sacrifice, or else `I would give it;/ You do not delight `in burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a `broken spirit,/ A broken and a contrite heart; These, O God, You `will not despise. 18 Do good in Your good plea`sure to Zion;/ Build the walls of `Jerusalem. 19 Then `You shall be pleased/ with the sacrifices `of righteousness, With burnt offering and `whole burnt offering;/ Then they shall offer bulls `on Your altar.

PSALM 51 - Have mercy up`on me, O God,/ According to Your `lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your `tender mercies,/ Blot out `my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my `iniquity,/ And cleanse `me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge `my transgressions,/ And my sin is al`ways before me. 4 Against You, You on`ly, have I sinned,/ And done this e`vil in Your sight; That You may be found `just when You speak,/ And blame`less when You judge. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in `iniquity,/ And in sin my moth`er conceived me. 6 Behold, You desire truth in `the inward parts,/ And in the hidden part You will make me `to know wisdom. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and `I shall be clean;/ Wash me, and I shall be `whiter than snow.

A Hymn, Lesson, and Homily may follow and a Canticle may be sung. Restore us, O God of hosts; Cause Your face to shine, and we shall be saved! Arise for our help, O Christ, And redeem us for Your mercy’s sake. O Lord, incline Your ear to me; Answer me speedily when I call. The Collect for the Day shall be said. Other collects and prayers may be said.

8

Make me hear `joy and gladness,/ That the bones You have bro`ken may rejoice. 9 Hide Your `face from my sins,/ And blot out all my `iniquities. 10 Create in me a `clean heart, O God,/ And renew a steadfast spir`it within me. 11 Do not cast me away `from Your presence,/ And do not take Your Holy `Spirit from me.

Let us bless the Lord! Thanks be to God! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit ď ˜ be with us all. Amen. A Hymn may be sung. 7
