On behalf of the Board of Directors, it is our pleasure to welcome you to Revival Theatre Company’s eleventh season! Thank you for sharing our passion for musical theatre and joining us for what promises to be an unforgettable year.
Fresh off our triumphant tenth anniversary, our 2025-26 season opened with the regional premiere of Come From Away , which culminated in a sold-out run and added preformances, we are thrilled to continue our tradition of presenting both classic musicals and contemporary gems, including an Iowa premiere this fall. As Cedar Rapids’ professional theatre company, we remain dedicated to our mission of filling a unique artistic and audience need by showcasing exceptional local talent alongside professional actors from across the country. Now in our second decade, Revival Theatre Company is poised to deliver even more vibrant, high-quality musical theatre to our community.
None of this would be possible without you—our cherished audience— and the generous support of countless individual donors. If you enjoy your experience with RTC, we warmly invite you to become a season subscriber and consider supporting us as a donor. Your contributions help sustain the artistry and energy of our productions. We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to CSPS, our valued partner and home to RTC’s offices. We look forward to deepening this collaboration as we continue to thrive as their resident theatre company.
Thank you for being part of our journey. Here’s to an extraordinary season of music, stories, and connection!

One of the most exciting things I get to do each year is share what our programming is going to be. Our eleventh season is no different. We open with a new contemporary story about how we come together in a show of humanity when faced with tragedy and grief in the inspiring true story of Come From Away . From one of the greatest composers and lyricists of our time, Stephen Sondheim, we bring this rarely produced gem and one of my favorites, Merrily We Roll Along to the stage. A story about growing up. We close the season with a show that stands the test of time, an American classic that becomes more relevant with each passing decade in Fiddler on the Roof. We’ve also programmed an anticipated partnership with our friends at Orchestra Iowa with the Broadway Pops and our 3rd annual fundraiser will bring the house down with Shawndell Young and Alica Monee. We’ve seen a 50% increase in season subscriptions. What this tells us is our patrons know they can expect an exceptional experience when attending an RTC show.
Many individuals have worked hard since our founding to get us where we are today. Many of those believed in the dream Cameron Sullenberger and myself envisioned. I'm so pleased and grateful for the support from the board of directors, the guild, and staff who continue to help shape a strong future for RTC. If the past season was any indication of what RTC can do, imagine, with your support, what else could be in store.
Thank you for joining us this season. Cheers to endless dreams and thrilling musical experiences.

by Brian Glick
Executive & Artistic Director
Nearly 18 years ago, I stepped onto a community theatre stage as Fyedka, the Russian. At the time, I don’t think I fully grasped the monumental weight of the story we were telling. But Fiddler on the Roof struck a chord in me that has never stopped vibrating. Today, in 2026, its reflection of the human condition feels sharper, heavier, and all too real.
At its core, Fiddler is an interrogation of survival: what we take with us, what we leave behind, what we desperately cling to, and what we must learn to let go. Yet, it is also a triumphant celebration of the things that can never be stolen from us—our beliefs, our music, and our unbreakable spirit. It is a work of gorgeous, hyper-specific cultural detail that somehow transcends its own borders to illuminate universal human truths.
Fiddler on the Roof is one of America's greatest musicals of all time, and has continued to have universality throughout the show's history. In the documentary Miracle of Miracles, composer Jerry Bock recalls a Japanese director asking him after a Tokyo performance, "Do people truly understand this show in America? It is so Japanese." Similarly, lyricist Sheldon Harnick shared a story from the late 1960s, when a primarily Black and Puerto Rican cast at Brownsville Junior High in Brooklyn faced intense backlash, vandalism, and bomb threats for staging the show. The writers fiercely defended those students, recognizing that the themes of Fiddler resonated perfectly with the heartbeat of the Civil Rights Movement.
Our own journey with this masterpiece began in 2020. Like theaters across the world, the pandemic brought our production to a sudden, devastating halt. Six years later, our cast is different, and our world is different, but my artistic intent remains unchanged. I did not want to present a sanitized, postcard version of Anatevka. I wanted a raw, vulnerable production that reflects the harsh realities these villagers face every single morning. They endure crushing poverty and precarious living conditions, but they possess an wealth of faith, family, and tradition. They have each other.
In 2026, as technology moves faster than ever and the world feels increasingly fractured, we find ourselves asking the same questions as the citizens of Anatevka. When the ground shifts beneath our feet, how do we balance? The answer is on this stage. It is community. It is tradition. Welcome to the show.

AMANDA J. MESIROW, PH.D.

My connection to Fiddler on the Roof is theatrical, personal, and spiritual. As a Russian Jew whose ancestors escaped the pogroms, it is the story of my family. As a “theatre kid” whose first role was Bielke (to my dad’s Tevye), it is the story of my beginning in theatre. And as someone with faith, the spiritual messages in Fiddler find a home within my heart and within my practice of Judaism.
Because of these connections, there are many touchstone moments for me in Fiddler . I find the most important line of the show to be Tevye’s, spoken as they prepare to leave Anatevka:
"MAYBE THAT’S WHY WE ALWAYS WEAR OUR HATS.”
Jews have long faced persecution and systemic oppression. Fiddler takes place in a shtetl (Yiddish for “town”). Shtetls existed as Jews were banished under Tsar regimes from Catherine the Great to Nicolas II to specific regions (Marzynski, 2019; Unpacked, 2021, Wikipedia, 2026).

At the time when and place where Fiddler is set, systemic oppression came in the form of forced settlements and pogroms (Lewkowicz, 2019; Marzynski, 2019; Ratzabi, n.d.; Wikipedia, 2026). Pogroms were violent, often deadly actions against Jews in Jewish communities, designed to not only eradicate the population but also to keep them under control through fear. Anti-Jewish sentiment from citizenry to the government led to slow (or no) responses from the government (Ratzabi, n.d.).
Despite the deadly oppression, there is also Jewish joy, and this is seen throughout Fiddler

Jewish music, art, humor, and spirit survived, and still survive, despite the ongoing persecution and hatred. Tevye the Dairyman–the central character of the story written by an author from the shtetls, Sholom Aleichem–is a larger than life presence who embodies much of what it means to be Jewish.
His humor, which is at times self-deprecating or complaining; his faith in God and familial relationship with God, and his love for and dedication to his family, are all tenets of Judaism. There are also Jewish archetypes (not stereotypes) in Fiddler , including the matchmaker, the Rabbi; even roles like Nachum the Beggar have their place in Jewish history as tzedakah (charity) is a major component of Jewish faith practice.
We also see life cycle events in Fiddler , including Shabbat, the wedding, and death/grief (in “The Dream” and “Chavaleh”). Jewish life and religious celebrations often center around home and community, a concept shown by Glick’s staging of “Sabbath Prayer,” where the community gathers together (symbolically) for the most important day of the week.
Jewish life, the “sunrises and sunsets,” the miracles and the mundane.
