Kudos and Parti Productions sign exclusive first look deal

Banijay has licensed “Super Star Ding Dong” Globo in Brazil

Kudos, a Shine Group company, announced an exclusive first-look co-production deal with Parti Productions. The partnership, brokered by Nisha Parti, Founder of Parti Productions and Jane Featherstone, Chief Executive of Kudos, sees the two production companies working together to discover new talent and develop and produce television drama for the UK and the international market. This deal aims to nurture Asian talent both on and off screen, pursuing a diverse range of stories told from an Asian perspective and builds on an existing relationship which saw Parti Productions and Kudos co-option the rights to adapt two novels by award winning journalist and author Sathnam Sanghera.

Banijay International has licensed its shiny floor musical entertainment format “Super Star Ding Dong” to TV Globo in Brazil. Originally created by Vision Independent Productions, the 13 x 40’ series will be produced by Globo´s in-house production team for live transmission later this year. The Brazilian version of this format will feature as a segment of “Domingão do Faustão”, Globo TV’s biggest entertainment show which airs in primetime from 6PM to 9PM every Sunday. “Super Star Ding Dong” was developed in Ireland for TV3 and has been produced in several countries including China where CCTV recently recommissioned the local adaptation for a third season.

Globosat and Caracol to launch an Hispanic Pay-TV Channel Two of Latin America’s biggest pay TV programmers, Brazil’s Globosat and Colombia’s Caracol TV, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to launch a Spanish-language pay-TV channel in the United States in 2015. The 55 million Hispanic TV market is one of the fastest growing markets in the U.S. Both companies believe that their new pay TV channel will be able to compete with Univision and Telemundo, who have gained increasing control over this market by cherry-picking popular telenovelas and producing new Spanish-language shows for U.S. viewers. The new joint venture will air existing content from Globosat and Caracol and will also develop new high-quality fiction programming specifically aimed at the U.S. market.

Local culture and language celebrated in new FremantleMedia format FremantleMedia is bringing “The Heart Of My Country” to MIPCOM, a new kind of singing talent format, firmly rooted in the love of a country’s national musical traditions. It takes a fresh and unique approach to social networking and digital platforms to create national event TV. The format is developed in-house by Austria’s PULS 4, and it was aired as “The Heart of Austria” (Herz von Österreich) on the network earlier this year. It became an instant hit in Austria, where played in Friday night primetime slot, exceeded the slot average by 75% and generated unprecedented levels of online discussion and social media buzz.

WWE signs 5 year deal with Fox Sports Latin America WWE and Fox Sports Latin America announced a multi-channel, five-year deal that will take WWE programming to 56 million homes in Latin America.

The new deal will bring more than 480 hours per year of original content to Fox’s Latin American Channels. Starting Monday Oct. 6, 2014, Fox Sports LA will have a live transmission of WWE’s flagship show, “Monday Night Raw”, “Friday Night SmackDown”, “Main Event”, and “NXT” will also be a part of Fox Sports LA’s weekly line-up. Finally, pay-per-views will be made available on Fox’s premium Latin American channels.

Netflix came to France Despite objections from French television companies and film-makers, the government has allowed the American video-streaming to enter to the country. Netflix has already agreed to finance a new French miniseries next year, set in the murky political world of Marseilles and based loosely on the “House of Cards” franchise. Other original French television programmes will follow. French television companies and film-makers are unhappy. They complain that Netflix, by basing its European operations in the Netherlands, will be able to escape rules on minimum French-language content and a levy on television firms which helps to finance the French cinema industry. The service is available from €7.99 a month.

According to the deal, one of the most original and fun-filled game show format to be exclusively distributed by Global Agency. The format created by July August Productions together with Michael Rothschild.

“TUG” is an exciting game, only in this game, it takes brains instead of brawn to take home the big prize!

Two teams with three members each, go head to head in a tug of war of knowledge. Tricon launches new food and décor series Tricon Films & Television announces the international launch of the new food and decor series “Dining INNvasion” (13x30’), which sees dated inns rejuvenated to provide the ultimate country dining experience. The series marks the first new production involved in Tricon’s multi-title acquisition agreement with General Purpose Entertainment. The show premiered on September 5th on Blue Ant Media’s Cottage Life channel.

Bungalow Media + Entertainment, a Cisneros strategic partner, will collaborate on the U.S. production and distribution of the series. Euro OTT market to near $9.5BN by 2018

Liberty Global Acquires a 6.4% Stake in ITV

As global consumer spending hits overdrive on online video services, research from Strategy Analytics shows total OTT revenue in Europe was up 51% in 2013, reaching $3.2 billion. Moreover the analyst calculates in the 2014 European OTT Video Market Forecast that the market will grow a further 43% in 2014, with the majority of growth occurring within the online subscription SVOD and ad-supported video business models, lifting the market above $9.45 billion by the end of 2018.

Indeed, led by Netflix, SVOD revenues experienced strong growth during 2013, up 133%, and are expected to nearly double by year-end 2014.

Liberty Global has acquired 259.8 million shares in ITV from British Sky Broadcasting Group for total consideration of approximately GBP 481 million. As a result of this investment, Liberty Global will own approximately 6.4% of ITV. Liberty Global intends to finance the acquisition of ITV shares through a combination of a loan linked to a hedging transaction that would be secured by ITV shares and existing liquidity. With this level of investment, no regulatory approvals are required. Mike Fries, Liberty Global’s CEO, commented: “This is an opportunistic and attractive investment for us in our largest cable market.

ITV is the leading commercial broadcaster in the U.K.”.

uring Mipcom, A+E Networks will be launching A+E Studios International.

To talk in depth about this new development, Señal Internacional interviewed Joel Denton, Managing Director, International Content Sales & Partnerships.

What does the launch of A+E Studios International mean for A+E ?

“A+E Studios International is the banner under which A+E Networks will distribute and finance quality scripted series, mini-series and movies. We have no set model in terms of the way we have to do business and are open to producing ourselves, or coproducing with partners both in the US and the rest of the world.

Working in the scripted space with our own Studio, we have real ambitions to grow our business and find new, innovative ways to bring really great ideas and stories to the screen with the very best talent behind and in front of camera”.

Why has the company decided to form this new banner?

“We launched A+E Studios just over a year ago to develop and produce

premium scripted content across all three of our main brands. An important advantage of A+E Studios is that we have greater control of the scripted programs that our domestic channels are commissioning; this is where A+E Studios International comes to play. Through coproduction and/or investments, we will have a greater stake in not only the development and production process, but also in global distribution”.

What are A+E Studios International’s business objectives?

“Another business objective is to meet with new and old clients, and to tell them a little bit more about the content we will be launching at MIPCOM under A+E Studios International. We want to share our strategy for working with partners and growing in this space. A+E Studios International will be distributing scripted series, mini-series and movies worldwide.”

Lifetime Original Movies for several years now. This year, we will have around 30 new Lifetime Movies; and with the launch of A+E Studios International, we are able to offer stronger, more diverse fare to our partners and audiences worldwide”.

What is the international business potential of “Sons of Liberty”?

“The event mini-series is one of our first wholly-owned shows under A+E Studios International, which focuses on the revolutionary war from the Boston Tea Party, through to the Declaration of Independence. It is a fast-paced and commercial take on this period of history, with a fantastic young ensemble cast including Ben Barnes as Sam Adams, Michael Raymond James as Paul Revere, and Dean Norris as Benjamin Franklin”.

What are the expectations around the launch of the series “UN-REAL”? “´Un-Real´ is essentially a really smart, darkly satiric look at what really goes on behind-the-scenes of a dating competition program. Our creative partner on the 10-hour series is Marti Noxon, who is a phenomenal show runner”.

How important is the business of A+E Networks regarding scripted series, miniseries and movies genres?

“Our US Networks have a long history with scripted programming, and we have been distributing a large number of

Denton is charged with developing and implementing sales strategies for A+E Networks’ 11,000+ hour library which features content from leading US cable channels, A&E, HISTORY, Lifetime, H2, FYI and LMN. He also lead international scripted revenue, execution and partnerships, and help facilitate international coproductions, pre-sales, and distribution.

Tomás Darcyl, Presidente de la compañía, detalla los aspectos clave a la hora de adquirir títulos para su catálogo: mientras que destaca la importancia de conocer a fondo los nuevos formatos y tendencias.

F

rente a la cantidad de oferta disponible en el mercado, seleccionar contenidos es siempre una apuesta de alto riesgo.

Quizás sea por eso que quienes forman parte de Telefilms sientan que todas sus películas son muy especiales. “Nosotros invertimos en los films antes de que nazcan. Leemos los guiones, vemos cuáles son los actores y evaluamos si sentimos que van a tener éxito o no en base a las tendencias del momento”, explicó Tomás Darcyl, Presidente de Telefilms, durante su último Screening en Los Angeles, evento esperado por los compradores más importantes de América Latina.

Este año la compañía celebró su screening número 25 en la ciudad californiana para presentar sus estrenos internacionales, entre los que este año se encuentran films como “The Wolf of Wall Street”, “The Butler” y “The Nut Job”. “En el Festival de Cannes invertimos en varias películas, por ejemplo la del director Juan Bayona, protagonizada por Liam Neeson. Se vendió a todos lados del mundo y para Latinoamérica estamos nosotros. Todos nuestros clientes la van a poder disfrutar en su pantalla”.

Con respecto a cómo es el proceso de selección de títulos para sumar a su catálogo, Darcyl aseguró que es indispensable conocer lo más posible acerca del contenido que se va a adquirir. “Es fundamental tomar la decisión con la mayor información posible, porque

para nosotros es un riesgo muy grande.

Tenemos que invertir para toda América Latina, y el mínimo garantizado que pagamos es solamente una parte menor, porque después vienen lo que son los costos de lanzamiento de cada película”, detalló.

SOCIO ESTRATÉGICO En este contexto, Telefilms tiene su propia distribuidora de cine en cinco países de América Latina (Argentina, Chile, Perú, Brasil y México), lo cual le permite decidir qué películas estrenar y discutir las fechas con los exhibidores. “Es todo un tema poder distribuir las películas y

tener un éxito, y es dificilísimo negociar con los exhibidores. Todo esto implica un trabajo de logística, de marketing, de inversión y de riesgo que estamos asumiendo y que estamos orgullosos de hacerlo porque sentimos que es la única manera de hacer grandes las películas y fortalecerlas”, analizó el ejecutivo.

odiak arrives to Mipcom after expanding “Psychic Challenge” format throughout Latin America. Following the earlier success of Psychic Challenge in Peru and Chile, Zodiak Rights has secured a new distribution deal in Brazil, increasing the format’s distribution in the region. The international division of Zodiak Media has sold the format, originally produced by Tevemediagroup in the Netherlands for RTL4, to SBT in Brazil.

Cygnus Media is currently producing a 13 part primetime series entitled “Os Paranormais” (The Paranormal) where Brazil’s best psychic will win a prize of over $20,000 in gold bars. The show will be broadcast by Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão. The format has been adapted in more than 16 territories worldwide with two series produced and broadcasted on Chile’s Chilevision in 2012 as “Psiquicos Estan Entre Nosotros”, delivering a 22% average audience share, and one 13 episodes series in Peru’s Frecuencia Latina last year.

To describe this context around the

Which will be the particular focus for the Latin America clients and broadcasters?

How do you manage the sales of the company between formats, scripted, and non-scripted?

“We have one sales team with a territory focused approach combining the Scripted and Non-Scripted catalogue which contains a library of existing and new programming of around 20,000 hours. Zodiak Rights is headquartered in London, with a number of regional sales offices, in Paris, Los Angeles and Scandinavia. Paris will service all Frenchspeaking, German and Benelux markets as well as Theatrical licensing; Los Angeles will focus on North America; and we will be opening a new office in Scandinavia to service the Scandinavian markets”.

What is the influence that digital platforms like Netflix reached in Latin America and worldwide?

“The success of OTT SVoD services has had a profound impact on the industry.

While OTT stole an initial march, Pay TV has risen to the challenge through TV Anywhere solutions, authenticated SVoD services amongst other innovations.

What this means is the need for informed and professional rights management to maximise opportunities”.

How do you realize that the Latin American landscape has changed?

“The Latin American landscape has long been a market where the windowing of content has been the norm; however it’s been a very specific market in terms of its broadcast needs. The arrival of OTT and the development of Pay TV’s nonlinear services have opened the market up allowing an increase in the range of international content we can make available there”.

The timeless intrigue of a murder mystery All3media International launch at Mipcom 2014 a new detective drama series called “The Brokenwood Mysteries”. As Managing Director Louise Pedersen explains, this strong history fills the requirement for high quality productions with stylish concepts.

P

uzzles are, by their nature, endlessly intriguing. The ‘murder mystery’ is perhaps the most compelling of them all. “The Brokenwood Mysteries” is the new detective drama series that All3media International launches at Mipcom 2014. In Brokenwood, an early morning mist will often give way to a glorious day. As far as towns go, it’s bucolic, pastoral yet curious. All in all, Brokenwood is a pretty nice place to live, if you watch your back and sleep with one eye open. This is what’s special about the new series from South Pacific Pictures (SPP), the production company behind the phenomenally successful comedy/drama, “Outrageous Fortune”, which saw great acclaim and fanfare in its homeland of New Zealand, as well as adaptations in both

the US and the UK. Here is a murder mystery series you can play along with from the safety of your armchair.

Brokenwood: Population 5000 and declining – slowly – one by one, or two by two depending on the murder rate that week.

WHERE EXACTLY IS BROKEWOOD? Although the series is set and filmed in New Zealand, Brokenwood really could be anywhere. It could be right where you live. The residents are pleasant, its rolling vineyards and leafy woodlands are idyllic and there is a strong sense of community at its core. It has a golf club, a mothers club and the town regularly plays host to wine-tasting shows. But

beneath the peaceful veneer grows lust, envy and greed, all of which too often lead to murder. “We wanted ´The Brokenwood Mysteries´ to be a crime drama based in reality. The murders are always tangible, the motivations are recognisable and the plots are solvable by human deduction rather than forensic smoke and mirrors”, explains Tim Balme, lead writer on the South Pacific Pictures production for Prime Network in New Zealand.

All3media International is delighted to add “The Brokenwood Mysteries” to their roster of acclaimed detective dramas. It will be right at home with the company, which has seen great success with “Midsomer Murders” and the recent launch of the Welsh detective drama, “Hinterland”, which sit alongside a variety of titles including “Inspector George Gently”, “Foyle’s War” and “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries”. The first series of “The Brokenwood Mysteries” is made up of four feature-length films of stand-alone stories connected by compelling leads, sumptuous visuals and devilish murder mysteries.

Managing Director of SPP, Kelly Martin, is confident that they’ve found a compelling and charismatic lead character in DCI Mike Shepherd, played

by Neill Rea: “He’s dishevelled, utterly without convention and has a great, dry sense of humour flowing through him.

Watching him question a dead body is truly a sight to behold, macabre and peculiar, yet impossible to turn away from”. The straight-laced DC Kristin Simms, played by Fern Sutherland, is the perfect foil to the maverick Shepherd, with the two making for a great double act, particularly in those scenes where Mike tries to impart his passion for country music on Kristin. elemundo Internacional desembarca en Mipcom con el objetivo claro de acrecentar el volumen de negocios que se genera alrededor de las adaptaciones de sus formatos. En septiembre se estrenó en su pantalla “Yo Soy El Artista”, que encabeza la propuesta de la compañía en este segmento para el mercado en Cannes. Para describir esta estrategia, Señal Internacional entrevistó a Emanuela Bosco, Gerente de Ventas de Formatos de Telemundo Internacional. ¿Cómo describirías la estrategia de expansión de Telemundo para el terreno de formatos?

“En Mipcom estaremos enfocados en el lanzamiento de la competencia de talento ´Yo Soy El Artista´, un formato de entretenimiento totalmente innovador en su estructura ya que utiliza el impacto que tienen hoy los influencers de los medios sociales como parte esencial del show. Este factor le da un potencial increíble, ya que a través de estos influencers se puede llegar a impactar a millones de personas en una sola noche” ¿Qué expectativas hay sobre este título? ¿Cuál es su potencial internacional?

“Tenemos muchas expectativas ya que creemos que marcará un antes y un después dentro de los formatos de entretenimiento. ´Yo Soy El Artista´ trae un nuevo concepto de competencia de talento. El objetivo es encontrar el verdadero artista que pueda cantar, bailar, actuar y cautivar al público.

El escenario es de alta tecnología y de proporciones enormes. Pero el verdadero elemento innovador son los 100 influencers seleccionados por su relevancia en los medios sociales y musicales: bloggers especializados en música, twittstars, talento musical y radio DJs. Ellos son el primer escollo que debe vencer el aspirante en su audición, y a través de ellos lograremos llegar a millones de seguidores desde la primera noche”. ¿Cómo ha sido el progreso del volumen de negocios en este género de programación?

“Estamos muy satisfechos con lo que hemos alcanzado con nuestra oferta de formatos.

Nuestros títulos siguen siendo adaptados con éxito a nivel internacional, como es el caso de ´¿Dónde Está Elisa?´, que cuenta con más de diez adaptaciones en el mundo, incluyendo su reciente y exitoso estreno en Asia. Otro título que nos ha dado satisfacciones ´Hijos del Monte”, original de TVN Chile,

¿Qué tipo de formatos son hoy los más buscados en la industria internacional?

“Depende, como siempre, de la zona geográfica. El norte de Europa por ejemplo se orienta más al género policiaco y de misterio.

Otros países como Italia, Rusia y Ucrania buscan una gama más abierta de géneros entre drama y comedia. Telemundo continúa enfocado en desarrollar formatos que puedan viajar internacionalmente y que tengan potencial a largo plazo”. ¿Cómo es el proceso de realización de un formato de Telemundo Internacional? ¿Se aporta know how, recurso humano y técnicos al cliente?

“Siempre hay una gran disponibilidad de nuestra parte para aportar nuestro knowhow y todo lo que el cliente necesita. Nuestro objetivo es siempre trabajar junto a nuestros clientes en cada etapa del proceso de producción”.

e la mano del escritor, Inajus lleva a Cannes la serie infantil “Chupones”, historia de siete niños que arman una agencia para evitar que sus padres y los padres de sus amigos se divorcien. Cada uno de los 120 capítulos es un nuevo caso en el que deberán ingeniárselas para descubrir los motivos de conflicto entre los adultos y tratar de solucionarlos, siempre desde el punto de vista infantil. “Esta programa contiene aventura, romance, emoción, ingenuidad y, en su original formato, conviven la mitología, la historia, las nuevas tecnologías y hasta la música, ya que los integrantes de la agencia forman una banda que tratará de grabar su primer disco. Un formato ideal para el negocio 360”, resume Horacio Marshall.

El autor también ha comenzado una telenovela en formato de comedia para TV Azteca, titulada “Jaime Bondi”.

Marshall valora este trabajo y apunta que “primero significa desarrollar una historia en clave de comedia desde el principio hasta el final donde los opuestos no son, como en toda buena telenovela que se precie, ricos y pobres. Por otro lado, significa la posibilidad de mezclar culebrón, comedia y policial en un producto que interesó a TV Azteca por ser atípico”.

“Con ´Vagabundo´ hemos presentado una historia que despertó el interés de Televisa. Luego nos solicitaron los guiones de la telenovela, y fue muy divertido trabajar en equipo. Uno siempre trata de pasarla bien cuando escribe una historia más allá de los avatares propios de la profesión.

Trabajar con tiempo para el desarrollo sin la presión del aire también ha sido bueno. Esperemos que el público la reciba con el mismo cariño con que nosotros la hemos escrito”.

Por su parte, “Leona” es una serie fuerte con Adriana Barraza, actriz mexicana reconocida mundialmente.

“Esta es la historia de una mujer sencilla, madre de tres hijos llamada a convertirse en una heroína capaz de dar su vida para salvar la de sus hijos.

De la noche a la mañana, al perder a uno de ellos, descubre que estuvo metido en el narcotráfico y, armada hasta los dientes, entiende que la única posibilidad de salvar al resto de sus hijos, haciéndose cargo de los negocios ilegales pendientes”, definió Maestro sobre el rol de Barraza.

Actualmente la cadena UniMás del grupo Univision está transmitiendo la telenovela ‘Cosita Linda’, y próximamente estrenará en el horario estelar del mismo canal la teleserie ‘DeMente Criminal’, con Lorena Rojas, Sebastián Ligarde, Gabriel Valenzuela, María Fernanda Yepes y Marcela Mar. Este compromiso por parte de UniMás demuestra la confianza y seguridad que se le tiene a estos contenidos para el mercado hispano de Estados Unidos.

Además, ‘Cosita Linda’ tuvo muy buen desempeño en los diversos territorios donde se transmite en América Latina”, detalló Díaz.

Desde hace más de un año seguimos con nuestra estrategia de presentar ideas y conceptos a diferentes productoras y canales de Estados Unidos; ya hemos logrado opcionar varios títulos, pero seguimos trabajando para ampliar nuestros negocios y, eventualmente, lograr acuerdos de coproducción”, concluyó Díaz.

Even though all regions are important, the current growth in Latin America still makes the region a strong focus for Beyond’s distribution strategy. Overall, and despite all the difficulties surrounding the distribution business, the company maintains itself as a leader with strong partners. “Our main clients Nat Geo and Discovery have a lot of hours to fill and, although they are receiving a lot from their internal productions, there is still room for the content that we produce and acquire”, Fynbo concluded.

An expansion Beyond limits

eyond is heading Mipcom with big news in its catalogue.

Although the distribution company has closed several recent sales for many of its titles across the globe, it is still strongly focused on the Latin American market. In terms of genders, Beyond offers a new slate of comedy titles from Channel 7 Australia that, however, are not expected to work for the Latin American market. “Even though they are very well written, the focus on that will be the US, because in all likelihood

hine International llega a Mipcom luego de cerrar nuevos acuerdos para “Gracepoint”, dado que la adaptación de “Broadchurch” de FOX fue adquirida por FOXTEL para Australia y Global TV en Canadá. Para describir sus objetivos de expansión a partir de Mipcom, Señal Internacional entrevistó a Daniel Rodriguez, Vice President Sales Latin America de la compañía. ¿Qué evaluación haces sobre tus primeros meses dentro de Shine?

“La compañía tiene un catálogo espectacular. Estoy en una gran posición, con un objetivo súper interesante: poder abrir la oficina para América Latina.

Al mismo tiempo, es una experiencia enriquecedora dado que en Miami estoy a mitad camino entre Los Angeles, donde está el área legal; y Londres, donde está mercado, producción y adquisiciones”. ¿Estás focalizado en algún modelo de negocios en particular?

“Me han dado mucha libertad. Tengo formatos, documentales, scripted, reality, de todo! El abanico de negocios está abierto. De hecho, la idea es buscar cosas que no estamos haciendo, ventas de libretos, coproducciones, trabajos con terceros, y formatos que nos presenten para venderlos en el resto del mundo”. ¿Qué tipo de crecimiento buscas a corto plazo en América Latina?

“Cuando llegué se estaba produciendo

‘Master Chef’ en Argentina y ‘Me Caigo de la Risa’ en México. Luego empezamos con ‘Master Chef’ en Brasil, que le va muy bien y está muy por encima del promedio del canal. Chile también ya está produciendo su versión, que sale muy pronto, y Colombia ya está por arrancar la suya.

De los países que tienen la capacidad para hacerlo en América Latina faltarían México y Ecuador”. ¿Qué tipo de trabajo y alianzas buscas fortalecer en Mipcom?

“En este mercado vamos a ver qué hay en América Latina para sumar en nuestro catálogo y luego llevarlo alrededor del mundo. El estándar Shine es que tiene que ser un producto que viaje bien, adaptable y que sea interesante para la audiencia. Casi 70% del prime time de América Latina son

El único problema es que la mayoría de las veces los broadcasts tienen miedo de probar cosas nuevas”. ¿Cómo ves las posibilidades de crecimiento en el género formatos?

“Mi objetivo va a ser consolidar las oportunidades de venta y la penetración de cada producción. Debemos buscar cómo trabajar con los canales de cable un poco más allá de la venta de lata. Muy poca gente sabe el volumen de venta que tiene Shine en TV paga. Creo que los clientes no tienen claro todo lo que tenemos y mi idea es expresar y abrir más posibilidades de negocio, que la gente vea las posibilidades de nuestro catálogo”. ¿Hay espacio para incrementar ventas dentro del género scripted?

“América Latina tiene posibilidad de crecer en lo que es scripted por dos razones: el aumento de la cantidad de producciones y la masificación de la TV paga. Los canales que eran de nicho solo van a sobrevivir con grillas de programación más parecidas a TV abierta. Van a necesitar un producto diferente y nosotros estamos haciendo producciones masivas, típicas de televisión abierta”.

elefe se acerca al final del año con una gran satisfacción: haber alcanzado con éxito los objetivos planteados para el 2014.

La compañía aprovechará el mercado de Mipcom para presentar sus nuevas tiras de prime time, ‘Camino al Amor’ y ‘Viudas e Hijos del Rock & Roll’, que se suman a las producciones lanzadas a principios de año, ‘Somos Familia’ y ‘Sres. Papis’. Además, la argentina se afianza en proyectos de generación de nuevos formatos, como ‘Necesito un Favor’, co-desarrollado con Armoza Formats.

En el marco de una unificación comercial y basado en estas diferentes líneas de negocio, Telefe dedicó el 2014 a sacar el mayor valor posible de sus productos.

Como generadora de contenidos multiplataforma, la estrategia se enfocó en que buena parte de las producciones propias estén disponibles bajo una misma web.

“Este año intentamos que el 80% de la programación tenga algún derivado de contenidos digitales, en mayor o menor medida. Nos enfocamos mucho en la dis-

En la vereda de enfrente, desde el punto de vista de la distribución de contenidos, Telefe apunta a que cada producto tenga el mayor desarrollo comercial posible.

“Obviamente no todos los programas tienen el mismo potencial, recorrido ni cadena de explotación, pero estamos trabajando mucho en empezar a darle sentido a eso, desde nuestra generación del contenido y desde el cliente, para armarle opciones que cuadren mejor con su propia cadena de valor de distribución o del servicio. Siento que hemos hecho un aprendizaje en ese sentido”, reflexionó el ejecutivo.

La nueva aplicación paraguas de Telefe reunirá todo su contenido. “Nosotros veníamos desarrollando aplicaciones individuales por programa, pero ahora la idea es tener todo dentro de una aplicación propia, y que haya mucha interacción con lo que sucede en la pantalla. Va a tener streaming de la señal en vivo y varios features muy interactivos, como la posibilidad de grabar contenidos y compartirlos”, adelantó Otaola. El primer paso será lanzar la app en Argentina y luego en el mercado internacional. “Queremos que nos sirva para dos cosas: que la gente acceda a nuestros contenidos y que sea un servicio de valor agregado para el operador”, resumió el ejecutivo.

Sony Pictures Televisión y Telefe cerraron un acuerdo para la utilización del set de grabación de “Escape Perfecto” en Argentina como hub regional de producción para futuras versiones del formato original de “Raid the Cage” en América Latina. SPT confirmó la venta de la licencia del programa a América TV de Perú, mientras que la compañía argentina producirá también la versión uruguaya, que se emitirá en el Canal 10 de Saeta.

“Nosotros teníamos la idea de comprar el formato, y luego surgió la oportunidad de desarrollarlo. Creemos que, en la región, la Argentina se puso competitiva en términos de precio y calidad. Hoy vemos los proyectos ya desde el punto de vista de la realización para que tengan mayor oportunidad de desarrollarse, y eso lleva a una magnitud de proyecto que, muchas veces, es difícil que sustente un solo país.

Ahí es donde empiezan a tener sentido los modelos asociativos de desarrollo”, comentó Otaola.

En busca del incremento de la escala de la explotación, Telefe apuesta a proyectos de co-producción, tanto en formatos como en cine y ficción. “Para tener un proyecto necesitas tener un entendimiento del mercado y asociaciones que te permitan generarlo. Este año nos enfocamos mucho en desarrollar lazos internos y externos para asentar la base, pensando en todo al mismo tiempo y con responsables diferentes. El canal es una alternativa más y, al final del día, lo que más necesitamos son oportunidades. Somos una productora que tiene una ventana en Argentina, y ese es el modelo que mejor nos está resultando”, concluyó Otaola.

mercado de habla hispana” Alexander Marín, Vicepresidente Senior de Distribución para Latinoamérica y el Mercado Hispano de EEUU de Sony Pictures Television, explica la importancia de los desarrollos realizados con diferentes socios de producción.

ony Pictures Television llega a Mipcom luego del exitoso lanzamiento de “Escape Perfecto” en Argentina, y del lanzamiento, junto a Telefe, de la conformación de un centro regional de producción para futuras versiones del exitoso formato de competición “Raid the Cage” para América Latina. De esta manera, el formato se coproducirá y realizará para América TV de Perú desde estas facilidades. Para describir este desarrollo, Señal Internacional dialogó con Alexander Marín, Vicepresidente Senior de Distribución para Latinoamérica y el Mercado Hispano de EEUU de la compañía.

Dado que México es el país de honor en Mipcom, ¿cómo es el contenido que SPT produce aquí? ¿Cómo es acogido por televidentes de otros países?

“México es el mayor mercado de habla hispana y produce una cantidad enorme de contenido que ofrece a compradores a lo largo de toda la región, y nuestras producciones se destacan por un estilo y

una sensibilidad muy particular, donde sus personajes conectan muy bien con todo tipo de audiencias. Cuando se trata de predecir éxitos, el mercado mexicano es un excelente termómetro; lo que tiene éxito en México tiende a encontrar una audiencia en la región, es por esto que nuestros productos tienen cabida en diferentes mercados. En cuanto a televidentes estadounidenses de habla hispana, muchos de los cuales tienen raíces culturales mexicanas, a ellos también les interesa este tipo de programa, al igual que a los televidentes a nivel mundial”. ¿Cómo ha sido el desempeño de la producción “El Mariachi”?

“Estamos muy complacidos con el desempeño de “Escape Perfecto” con Telefe, el cual continua estando en los primeros lugares de audiencia en prime time en Argentina y que ahora se ha expandido a tres noches a la semana. El éxito de este programa es un testimonio de la adaptabilidad del formato ´Raid the Cage´.

Trabajamos de la mano de Telefe para crear la sede de producción en Argentina porque consideramos que es una movida inteligente y eficiente a nivel de costos que beneficiara a todos los operadores de la región como Saeta en Uruguay y America TV en Perú. Anticipamos que ambas adaptaciones serán muy bien recibidas en ambos mercados y estamos seguros que este excelente formato se replicara muy pronto en otros países”.

realities are big ratings drivers around the world” Sebastian Burkhardt, Head of Sales at Banijay International, talks about the new big show of the company, “The Sorrentinos”; and highlights the actual positioning as a distribution partner for finished programmes as well as formats.

IPCOM it’s a key market for Banijay International, because the company will launch a very important show for their strategy: “The Sorrentinos”. Following its recent appointment to represent the TVGN (TV Guide Network) programming catalogue, Banijay will launch TVGN’s these brand new reality series at the market in Cannes. To describe this new strategy, Señal Internacional interviewed Sebastian Burkhardt, Head of Sales at Banijay International.

Which are the expectations around the launch of “The Sorrentinos”?

“We are very excited as is the first brand new series we are distributing from our new partner, TVGN, one of the fastestgrowing networks in the US and their programming is really fresh and fun.

This partnership works to strengthen our position as a distributor of finished programming as well as formats, and ´The Sorrentinos´ is a great property to roll out with”.

Do you observe a growing path around this format?

“Of course we hope our clients will be as charmed by ´The Sorrentinos´ as we are, it is a reality show with a lot of heart.

How do you think that this product will be received by the international market?

“Celebrity-driven reality shows are still big ratings drivers all around the world and the right reality series can be an important branding tool for a channel. We have identified a lot of potential clients for ´The Sorrentinos´ and we think that they will find it to be a smart and funny addition the genre with a refreshingly positive outlook. The show revolves around a recovering addict working to turn his life around with the support of his close-knit – if somewhat crazy – family.

There are some strong family values at play here that we think will help the show to stand apart from the competition. So overall the sales potential is very strong”.

How the figure of Mike Sorrentino will help with this expansion? “´Jersey Shore´ is a huge television phenomenon and Mike ´The Situation´ Sorrentino is a household name in many countries. He is one of the most famous characters of one of the most successful reality stars in the world. In 2010 he was the second highest-paid reality star behind only Kim Kardashian! Over six seasons of ´Jersey Shore´ he developed a huge fan following, those who love him, and those who love to hate him.

Now viewers get an opportunity to see him in a new situation, dealing with new challenges”.

How Banijay improved their offer with the representation of TVGN programming catalogue?

“We are thrilled to be working with TVGN. Their catalogue demonstrates all of the qualities we were looking for when we entered into finished programming distribution: strong creative ideas with international appeal, produced to the highest standard. The catalogue also has very universal appeal as it deals with pop culture, the entertainment world and celebrities who are known internationally.

Because of the long-running reputation of the TV Guide brand, TVGN is able to work with some very high-profile entertainers from the world of TV, film and music. OMOS Distribution llega a Mipcom con una oferta variada de contenidos que esta vez se centra en las populares telenovelas turcas, como así también películas y formatos. Para describir esta propuesta, Señal Internacional dialogó con Francisco Villanueva, Vicepresidente y COO de la empresa. ¿Cómo analizas el posicionamiento de las telenovelas turcas en la industria?

“Las telenovelas turcas han logrado un muy buen posicionamiento entre clientes y audiencia por la calidad de su producción, lo atractivo y compatible de su casting con la audiencia latina y lo interesante de sus historias, que combinan temas históricos y contemporáneos como marco para la narrativa de amor que es clave en el género. De esta forma, la telenovela como género global tiene otro gran centro de producción, aparte de los clásicos núcleos latinoamericanos y como el negocio es global, el suceso de la telenovela turca se da no solo en el producto terminado, sino también en la comercialización y adaptación de los libretos de estas historias”. ¿Qué tipo de necesidades de los clientes satisface este de programación?

“Significa tener un producto de amplio atractivo para todo tipo de audiencias en un horario importante de las parrillas de programación. La telenovela turca atrae los dos géneros y por su historia también se expande en términos de edades, donde se aprecian también los valores de producción que casi se aproximan a las series de tan alta calidad que tiene la televisión contemporánea. De esta manera se unen los factores para un producto

¿Cómo se combinan los modelos de negocio para libretos con las producciones terminadas?

“Esta es una combinación muy aceptada porque las historias buenas, que tengan éxito comprobado, son un recurso que baja riesgos de producción, tan elevados hoy en la industria. El éxito comprobado de las adaptaciones ha hecho que la venta de libretos sea un negocio muy atractivo y nadie quiere dejar pasar aquella buena trama que tenga posibilidades locales e internacionales. Este negocio ha abierto todo un tema nuevo en la repartición de territorios, idiomas y demás elementos. Por su parte, las producciones terminadas toman ventaja del atractivo de las locaciones, vestuarios y demás elementos de arte, visten a las televisoras locales con un contenido de difícil producción con recursos propios”. ¿Cómo ha sido el progreso del volumen de negocios dentro del segmento formatos?

“Para nosotros como distribuidora independiente el saber anticipar lo que puede ser exitoso es clave tanto para el crecimiento del negocio. Esto confirma ante nuestros clientes que conocemos el

Acabamos de estar en Corea, donde analizamos posibilidades con los jugadores de ese mercado, así como también hemos estado presentes en Europa Oriental, donde se busca también apoyo de distribución por parte de los productores. Estamos en un negocio globalizado, donde sumar fortalezas es importantes para seguir creciendo”.

n una región que parece encaminarse a la consolidación en el consumo de contenidos y medios digitales, plataformas

como Facebook se vuelven indispensables para que las marcas televisivas interactúen de manera directa con los espectadores. En diálogo con Señal Internacional, Michael Sotelo, Head of US Hispanic and Pan LatAm Marketing, Regional Business Marketing de Facebook, explicó por qué la plataforma apunta su estrategia regional al desarrollo móvil y cómo los programadores pueden capitalizar estos beneficios para expandir su negocio. ¿Cuál es el principal enfoque de Facebook para América Latina?

“Aunque se puede acceder a la plataforma desde la computadora, nuestra compañía no es de desktop sino que es una plataforma móvil, y queremos posicionarnos como uno de los líderes en este segmento. En los próximos dos o tres años va a haber un aumento en la adopción de smartphones, y esto va a cambiar las posibilidades de acceso a Facebook y a Internet en general”. ¿Cómo evalúas el engagement vía Facebook del consumo de contenidos televisivos?

“Los días en los que la televisión era el único eje quedaron atrás, y las personas están permanentemente usando sus teléfonos y tablets: hablan, suben fotos y comentan a través de nuestra plataforma. Eso es lo que nosotros llamamos ‘mobile device consumption’, y las marcas deben saber que esa es la oportunidad de hablar con sus consumidores más importantes sobre

el contenido que están viendo”. ¿Cómo ha sido el desarrollo de Facebook como canal de comunicación para la industria televisiva?

“En América Latina no ha crecido como en los Estados Unidos. En este momento en Estados Unidos hay un gran enfoque en las marcas de televisión, que hacen anuncios no sobre el canal pero sí sobre los shows. Durante la emisión de la temporada, y esto ocurre también en América Latina, se busca que los consumidores estén hablando sobre lo que están viendo y den su opinión sobre lo que está pasando y lo que va a pasar.

Incluso muchos shows televisivos pasan los comentarios que se generan en las redes sociales en vivo en la pantalla del canal. Y eso es algo increíble, porque nos enseña que los consumidores tienen el teléfono móvil hasta cuando están viendo un show”. ¿Cómo se aprovecha la posibilidad de segmentación de las audiencias?

“Nosotros tenemos el lujo de saber muchísimo sobre nuestros usuarios a través de lo que ellos mismos nos dicen: su edad, sus Festival of Media Latam

Entonces, por ejemplo, podemos ir a FOX y decirles: ‘tenemos un grupo de 25 millones de personas que les gusta tu show’. Y esa es una oportunidad única para hablarle directamente a sus consumidores”. ¿Cómo se da la construcción de las marcas televisivas a través de Facebook?

“Las compañías de televisión, especialmente las grandes, están continuando las historias que se ven en televisión a través de un preview vía Facebook de lo que va a pasar la semana que viene. Y esto es enorme para el reconocimiento de la marca, no solamente del show”. ¿Cómo pueden los programadores capitalizar el video de Facebook para expandir su negocio?

“Es una oportunidad impresionante para ellos, porque pueden mostrar a los consumidores un video de dos minutos sobre el contenido que quieran, de una forma muy orgánica y natural a lo que se ve en el news feed. Además, desde Facebook ahora también tenemos la posibilidad de ver cuánto se vio de ese video, si se vio el anuncio hasta el final o si la persona lo compartió con sus amigos. Para la televisión nuestro video va a ser muy útil, porque es básicamente una continuación de las historias que están mostrando en pantalla pero a través de Facebook, hablándole específicamente a las personas que son de su interés. Y eso es algo que no había pasado antes. El desarrollo en América Latina va a seguir de la mano del móvil, y el producto de video va a estar al son de ese crecimiento”.

HP: “On the non-scripted side, both the award-winning ‘Benidorm Bastards’ and worldwide hit ‘My Man Can’ have been signed in Latin America and this has really helped to establish our slate of formats. As these titles continue to grow, we expect other shows from our catalogue to follow. That will be a focus for us at Mipcom”.

Which other business opportunities is Red Arrow noticing in this region?

II: “On the scripted side, we’ve been taking a ride on an uphill rollercoaster.

Our programming makes us a real player when it comes to international, and most importantly, US content. Latin America has become a true fan of our shows, and we intend to take good care of our fans”.

HP: “As for the non-scripted shows, ‘The Taste’ and ‘Married At First Sight’ have proven their potential to bring strong ratings to broadcasters worldwide. These two shows are now slated to premiere in Latin America in 2015”.

as producciones de Globo continúan pisando fuerte tanto en el mercado brasileño como en el internacional. Además de presentar su catálogo 2014 en Mipcom, la compañía espera reforzar sus relaciones y crear nuevas oportunidades de negocio. En diálogo con Señal Internacional, Raphael Corrêa Netto, Director Ejecutivo de Negocios Internacionales de Globo, analizó los valores que convierten a sus producciones en éxitos entre múltiples audiencias de todo el mundo. ¿Cuáles de los contenidos que llegan a Mipcom ya fueron emitidos en Brasil y cuál fue su desempeño?

“Todos los contenidos que estamos llevando a Cannes ya han sido exhibidos en Brasil.

Seleccionamos obras que cosecharon un gran éxito en nuestro país, que tienen un carácter universal y capacidad para viajar bien. Las telenovelas, nuestro buque insignia, son las que destacan. ‘Flor del Caribe’, por ejemplo, ya demostró su potencial de cautivar audiencias en Brasil, donde se emitió en el access prime time con una media de 25 puntos de audiencia y 50% de share. ‘Rastros de Mentiras’, que se emitió en el prime time, fue otro éxito: el último capítulo obtuvo 48 puntos de rating y 75% de participación. Por su parte, ‘La Guerrera’ conquistó una media de 38 puntos y 65% de share”.

¿Cómo impacta el boom del prime time brasileño en la TV abierta latinoamericana?

“Las telenovelas exhibidas con éxito en el prime time brasileño llaman la atención del mercado latinoamericano, que ya conoce la calidad de las producciones de Globo. Los compradores de la región esperan que estas telenovelas compongan nuestro catálogo por tener historias con calidad capaces de cautivar audiencias independientemente de su cultura. Producciones que fueron fenómeno de audiencia en Brasil normalmente repiten el hecho en otros países. Estos éxitos nacionales y mundiales son de extrema importancia porque son los grandes responsables de fortalecer la marca Globo en América Latina”.

UNA FLOR QUE SE DESTACA Escrita por Walter Negrão, “Flor Del Caribe” es una telenovela que cuenta la historia de amor y aventura entre un piloto de la Fuerza Aérea (Henri Castelli) y una guía turística (Grazi Massafera). La producción ya fue licenciada para América Latina, Corea del Sur y, recientemente, Hungría.

¿A qué atribuyes el éxito internacional de “Avenida Brasil”?

“Su éxito está en una combinación de factores: texto impecable de João Emanuel Carneiro, una dirección innovadora que permitió que el elenco brillase y actores de primera línea.

Además de tratar temas muy específicos de la realidad brasileña, la telenovela habla principalmente del ser humano, y eso generó mucha identificación”. ¿Cuántos países se sumaron a su distribución mundial?

“Ha sido la telenovela con más récord de ventas en la historia de Globo, con derechos exhibición vendidos a 130 países. Netflix continues to show how ott is done, Amazon and Hulu not so much having a good content library is a necessary but not sufficient element to success. A quality user experience is important as well.

P

iper Jaffray released an interesting analysis with a quantitative look at the availability of top recent TV shows and movies on Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu. According to Variety, Piper Jaffray found that Netflix is leading Amazon in content licensing by a “wide margin” . These metrics illustrate the importance of architecting a quality library when building a successful OTT TV/movie service. That said, having a good content library is a necessary but not sufficient element to success.

A quality user experience is important, as well. Plus, if you want to play with the big boys in OTT, Netflix has made buzz-worthy original content part of the table stakes.

Regarding the top 50 movies over the last three years, Netflix offers 12%, Amazon Prime 6%, and Hulu Plus only 1%. This data suggests that the legacy post-theatrical movie windows of physical media and premium TV networks are still dominating the studios’ mindshare.

Looking at the 75 top-rated television shows over the last four seasons, Netflix has 32% of them contained in its library, while Amazon Prime Instant Video includes only 12%. On the other hand, when it comes to the 76 most highly-rated TV series from the current season, Hulu Plus has 57%, Netflix 20%, and Amazon only 9%. This stat requires a few asterisks.

First, it is important to note that broadcast networks have a lock on the top 75 shows. During the first run fall-through-spring season, typically less than 10 cable shows appear in the top 75 weekly rankings. Cable’s share rises somewhat in the summer, but broadcast still dominates. Given that Hulu is owned by three of the big four broadcasters (ABC, Fox, and NBC) and is effectively the only outlet for in-season broadcast TV shows (other than the online video players of the big four broadcast networks or TVE access via select MVPDs), it is not overly surprising that Hulu Plus has a big lead in this regard.

Second, Netflix and Amazon (at least as far as I can tell from their UIs) don’t offer in-season first-run episodes of TV shows. The one exception is Amazon showing current episodes of CBS’s summer series, Under the Dome.

Second, how should Amazon and Hulu respond? The answer is the same for both: spend more money. Netflix’s early market entry and superb execution has generated a large war chest for content checks. Amazon and Hulu, on the other hand, need to step up their content spending in order to play in the same game as Netflix. Unfortunately for them, today’s TV/movie production ecosystem is a world of fragmented divisional income statements and multiple studio partners per project, making it difficult to accomplish “sweetheart deals” for the sake of strategic relationships.

Money in sizeable amounts is also necessary for producing “TV quality” original content – including pouring some of it down the drain on bombs while (hopefully) cashing in on the hits. Finally, it is important that both Amazon and Hulu invest significantly more money in improving the user experience.

I reserve my greatest level of user experience scorn for Amazon.

Through a browser, the first page of the Amazon Prime Instant Video experience offers an attractive (but “lite”) version of the Netflix UI. But once you dive down another level, things decline quickly, with Amazon employing the same user interface for video search that it uses to sell everything else. And, on an iPad, Amazon’s UI is even worse. It is understandable that Amazon would reserve the best UI for its own branded devices, but on other devices it should at least be adequate.

Amazon needs to build a proper entertainment access experience, which requires investing resources in its video UI. It’s not as if Amazon hasn’t made a real commitment to the OTT space, spending a considerable amount on content (including the exclusive deal with HBO), plus releasing the Amazon Fire TV streaming box. If Amazon and Hulu Plus are in the SVOD game for real, then they need to do what all SVOD (and even operator VOD) strategies should do: open up the wallets and try to do a better job than Netflix on the key on-demand service elements. And if they can’t do better, they should at minimum copy Netflix.
