Esta vitrina debe ser la oportunidad para que el mundo vea el maravilloso país que tenemos y que gracias a las condiciones climáticas podemos producir una flor de óptima calidad. No podemos dejar de mencionar sin embargo, que la producción en general se ha visto afectada por los cambios climáticos en el mundo.

El cambio climático es un término muy usado en los últimos años. Cada vez más, vemos cómo los efectos de los fenómenos atmosféricos afectan a nuestro negocio, no solo por los climas extremos en los mercados de destino de nuestras flores, sino también porque cada año el clima en nuestro país se ha visto influenciado por esta realidad climática mundial.

Por este motivo, en esta edición, hemos pedido a varios técnicos agrícolas que nos transmitan su experiencia al usar herramientas que les permiten enfrentar estas variables para tomar decisiones oportunas y disminuir el impacto en los diversos cultivos, incluído el de flores, dentro y fuera de los invernaderos. El contar con equipos tecnológicos adecuados les permitirá responder de mejor manera a estas variables que están fuera de su control y que sin embargo, están directamente relacionadas con los resultados.

En esta edición les traemos un reportaje gráfico de lo que fue FLORIEXPO 2024, en USA, así como el 1er Encuentro de Floristas que se realizó en Quito y la Casa Abierta que presentó Sacha Flor con sus nuevas variedades de ranúnculos.

This important international event will be the meeting point between producers from various regions of the country and buyers from all over the world who will come to do business.

Our privileged location allows us to sell hours of sunshine in our products: larger flowers, with more intense colors, sweeter, less fibrous fruits, and many more attributes that give us the advantage of being unique due to our geographical location.

This showcase should be the perfect opportunity for the world to see what a wonderful country we have and how, thanks to our climatic conditions, we can produce flowers that hold such optimum quality. We cannot help but mention, however, that production in general has been affected by climate changes worldwide.

Climate change is a term that has been used a lot in recent years. We are increasingly evidencing how the effects of atmospheric phenomena affect our business, not only because of the extreme climates within the destination markets of our flowers, but also because every year the climate in our country is being influenced by this global climatic reality.

According to what was mentioned above, in this edition, we have asked several agricultural technicians to share their experience using tools that allow them to deal with these variables in order to make timely decisions and thus reduce the impact on various crops, including flowers, both inside and outside greenhouses. Having adequate technological equipment will allow them to better respond to these variables which are beyond their control but nevertheless are, however, directly related to the results.

In this edition we bring you a graphic report of how FLORIEXPO 2024, carried out in the USA, developed. As well as the 1st Meeting of Florists that took place in Quito and the open house that Sacha Flor presented with its new varieties of ranunculus (buttercups).

Además, el monitoreo de variables clave como temperatura, humedad, precipitación y radiación solar, así como la integración de sensores en el suelo y en las plantas, ayuda a los agricultores a entender mejor la relación entre la planta, el clima, el suelo y el agua. Esta comprensión integral es fundamental para tomar decisiones informadas que mejoren la salud de las plantas y maximicen la eficiencia en el uso de recursos.

Este artículo analiza en forma práctica cómo funcionan las estaciones meteorológicas, las variables meteorológicas más relevantes para el cultivo de flores, su aplicabilidad específica en el contexto ecuatoriano, el papel fundamental que juegan frente al cambio climático, y los beneficios económicos y operativos que ofrecen a la floricultura.

¿Qué es una estación meteorológica y cómo funciona?

Introducción El cambio climático se ha convertido en uno de los desafíos más apremiantes para la agricultura global, y la floricultura en Ecuador no es la excepción. Las alteraciones en los patrones climáticos tradicionales, como el aumento de la frecuencia e intensidad de fenómenos extremos—incluyendo lluvias torrenciales, sequías prolongadas, olas de calor y heladas— están poniendo en riesgo la estabilidad y productividad de los cultivos de flores. Estos cambios no solo afectan la cantidad y calidad de la producción, sino que también incrementan los costos operativos debido a la necesidad de implementar medidas de mitigación y adaptación más complejas.

Uno de los impactos más preocupantes del cambio climático en la floricultura es su influencia en el ciclo de crecimiento de las plantas, lo que puede alterar el momento de la floración.

Esto es particularmente crítico en una industria donde la sincronización de la floración con las épocas de mayor demanda, como San Valentín o el Día de la Madre, es esencial para maximizar las ganancias. Las condiciones climáticas adversas pueden retrasar o adelantar la floración, afectando la disponibilidad de flores en los momentos clave del mercado.

Además, el cambio climático ha hecho que la predicción de las producciones sea cada vez más difícil. La variabilidad climática provoca que la producción se adelante o se atrase, y en ocasiones, los tallos no logran inducir una floración adecuada debido a estas fluctuaciones en el clima.

Además, el cambio climático está propiciando la aparición y proliferación de plagas y enfermedades en épocas donde no solían aparecer, amenazado los cultivos de flores. El aumento de la temperatura y la humedad crea un ambiente favorable para que patógenos y plagas se desarrollen más rápidamente y se propaguen con mayor facilidad, lo que puede resultar en pérdidas significativas si no se gestionan adecuadamente.

Una estación meteorológica moderna es un sistema integral que combina múltiples sensores especializados para la medición precisa de variables atmosféricas y del suelo. Estas estaciones pueden estar equipadas con una variedad de instrumentos que miden diferentes aspectos del clima y del entorno de cultivo, como:

• Termómetros: Miden la temperatura del aire y del suelo, fundamentales para el seguimiento del ciclo de crecimiento de las plantas y el nivel de estrés.

• Higrómetros: Miden la humedad relativa del aire, esencial para prevenir condiciones propicias para enfermedades fúngicas.

• Pluviómetros: Registran la cantidad de precipitación, lo que ayuda a gestionar el riego y el manejo de plagas y enfermedades.

• Anemómetros: Miden la velocidad y dirección del viento, datos cruciales para prever y mitigar el daño físico en infraestructuras de invernaderos y la dispersión de plagas.

• Piranómetros: Miden la radiación solar, la luz PAR (radiación fotosintéticamente activa) y la radiación UV, lo que permite un análisis detallado de la cantidad de luz que llega a las plantas, siendo crítico para procesos como la fotosíntesis.

Además de estos instrumentos atmosféricos, las estaciones meteorológicas pueden integrarse con sensores colocados directamente en el suelo y en las plantas, lo que permite un monitoreo detallado de las condiciones del suelo y el estado de las hojas.

Estos sensores pueden medir: • Humedad del suelo: Proporciona datos precisos sobre el contenido de agua en el suelo, lo que es crucial para ajustar la frecuencia y cantidad de riego.

• Conductividad eléctrica del suelo: Mide la concentración de sales y nutrientes disponibles, ayudando a gestionar la fertilización de manera más eficiente.

• Temperatura del suelo: Influye en el desarrollo de las raíces, establecimiento de microbioma, disponibilidad de nitratos y fosforo en el suelo, permitiendo a los floricultores ajustar las condiciones para un crecimiento óptimo.

• Concentración de elementos como N, P, K: Sensores avanzados pueden medir la concentración de nutrientes esenciales como nitratos(NO2), fósforo (P) y potasio (K), permitiendo ajustes precisos en la aplicación de fertilizantes para optimizar el crecimiento y la salud de las plantas.

• Concentración de O2 y CO2 en el suelo: Indicadores clave de la respiración radicular y la salud del suelo.

• Humedad de hoja: Permite evaluar la cantidad de agua en la superficie de las hojas, lo cual es crucial para prevenir enfermedades fúngicas y ajustar prácticas de riego y ventilación en invernaderos.

Variables meteorológicas clave para el cultivo de flores A continuación, se presenta una tabla que resume el concepto de cada variable meteorológica y su impacto en la productividad y calidad de las flores:

Temperatura ambiental

Mide el grado de calor o frío en el aire circundante.

La temperatura regula la fotosíntesis y la respiración. Temperaturas fuera del rango óptimo en cultivos florícolas (15°C a 25°C) pueden reducir la fotosíntesis, incrementar nitratos libres en las vacuolas y favorecer la aparición de plagas y enfermedades, disminuyendo la productividad y calidad.

Temperatura del suelo

Mide el calor dentro del perfil del suelo (0 a 45 cm de profundidad).

Temperaturas frías influyen en la acumulación de nitratos en el suelo y reducen la absorción de fósforo, potasio y calcio, provocando enfermedades. Suelos muy calientes favorecen un mayor desarrollo vegetativo, pero también propician la aparición de plagas como ácaros.

Humedad ambiental

Cantidad de vapor de agua presente en el aire.

Una humedad ambiental elevada (>85%) puede fomentar enfermedades fúngicas, reduciendo la productividad. Humedades bajas aumentan la transpiración, lo que puede llevar a un déficit hídrico y afectar la turgencia de las flores, disminuyendo su calidad.

Humedad del suelo

Contenido de agua en el suelo.

La humedad del suelo es clave para el manejo del riego. Un suelo con humedad inadecuada puede causar estrés hídrico, afectando la fotosíntesis y el crecimiento de las plantas. Un control preciso de la humedad asegura flores saludables y un desarrollo radicular óptimo.

Humedad de hoja

Mide la cantidad de agua en la superficie de las hojas.

La humedad prolongada en la superficie de las hojas puede crear un ambiente propicio para hongos y bacterias. Un manejo adecuado de la ventilación y el riego es crucial para evitar la aparición de enfermedades.

Déficit de Presión de Vapor (DPV)

Diferencia entre la cantidad de vapor de agua que el aire puede contener y la cantidad que contiene.

Un DPV alto indica que el aire es seco, lo que puede aumentar la transpiración y causar estrés hídrico en las plantas. Este estrés puede ralentizar el crecimiento y reducir la productividad. Un DPV bajo puede aumentar la humedad ambiental, lo que favorece enfermedades fúngicas.

Radiación total

Cantidad de energía solar que incide sobre la superficie de la planta.

La radiación solar es vital para la fotosíntesis. Una radiación insuficiente limita la fotosíntesis, reduciendo la productividad. Exceso de radiación puede causar daños por calor y estrés en las plantas, afectando la calidad de las flores.

Luz PAR y DLI

La luz PAR es utilizada para la fotosíntesis.

El DLI mide la cantidad total de luz PAR recibida.

Un DLI adecuado maximiza la fotosíntesis y la productividad. Un DLI insuficiente disminuye la tasa fotosintética y la productividad. En rosas, un DLI entre 14 y 30 mol·m⁻²·d⁻¹ es ideal.

Radiación UV

Parte del espectro solar que puede influir en el crecimiento y desarrollo de las plantas.

La exposición controlada a la radiación UV mejora la resistencia a enfermedades, mejorando la calidad de las flores. Un exceso de radiación UV puede dañar el ADN de las células vegetales, afectando el crecimiento y causando decoloración y quemaduras.

Evapotranspiración

Suma de la evaporación del agua del suelo y la transpiración desde las plantas.

Un alto nivel de evapotranspiración indica mayor demanda hídrica. Un manejo inadecuado del riego en respuesta a la evapotranspiración puede llevar a un déficit hídrico y a una menor producción de flores.

Precipitación

Medición de agua que cae naturalmente de las nubes.

La cantidad y distribución de las precipitaciones influye directamente en las necesidades de riego y en el manejo de plagas y enfermedades. Un exceso de lluvia puede incrementar hongos y bacterias en las plantas y en el suelo.

Dirección y velocidad del viento

Determinan la fuerza y dirección del aire en movimiento.

Vientos fuertes pueden causar daños físicos a los invernaderos y las plantas. Además, el viento aumenta la tasa de evapotranspiración, incrementando las necesidades de riego y puede influir en la dispersión de plagas como trips.

Conductividad eléctrica del suelo

Medida de la capacidad del suelo para conducir una corriente eléctrica.

Una conductividad alta puede indicar salinidad excesiva, dañando las raíces y reduciendo la capacidad de la planta para absorber agua. Un manejo adecuado asegura que las plantas reciban los nutrientes necesarios para un desarrollo óptimo.

Aplicabilidad de las estaciones meteorológicas en la floricultura ecuatoriana Las estaciones meteorológicas juegan un papel crucial en la optimización de diversas prácticas de manejo agronómico en la floricultura ecuatoriana. A continuación, se describen las principales áreas de aplicabilidad: Manejo del riego y la fertilización: • Datos utilizados: Humedad del suelo, evapotranspiración, temperatura del suelo, conductividad eléctrica, nivel de nutrientes, nivel de oxígeno.

La precisión en el manejo del riego y la fertilización es fundamental para garantizar el crecimiento óptimo de las flores. Los datos de humedad del suelo y evapotranspiración permiten ajustar el riego según las necesidades específicas de cada planta, evitando tanto el estrés hídrico como el encharcamiento. Manejo de plagas y enfermedades: • Datos utilizados: Humedad relativa, temperatura ambiental, humedad de hoja, nivel de nitratos, conductividad eléctrica.

El control efectivo de plagas y enfermedades es esencial para mantener la calidad y productividad de los cultivos de flores. La humedad relativa y la temperatura son indicadores clave de las condiciones ambientales que favorecen el desarrollo de patógenos y plagas. La humedad de la hoja es particularmente importante para predecir y prevenir la aparición de enfermedades que pueden devastar un cultivo si no se gestionan adecuadamente.

El exceso de nitratos en el suelo puede ser perjudicial, ya que favorece el crecimiento excesivo de la parte vegetativa de las plantas, lo que puede hacerlas más susceptibles a ataques de plagas y enfermedades. Un nivel elevado de nitratos puede debilitar la estructura celular de las plantas, haciéndolas menos resistentes a infecciones y daños por plagas. Además, una acumulación de nitratos puede interferir con la absorción de otros nutrientes esenciales, desequilibrando la nutrición de la planta y aumentando su vulnerabilidad. La nutrición foliar y la bioestimulación son prácticas críticas para mejorar la salud y vigor de las plantas. Los datos de temperatura y humedad ambiental, junto con las horas de frío, ayudan a determinar los momentos óptimos para la aplicación de nutrientes foliares y bioestimulantes, maximizando su absorción y eficacia. La radiación total, la luz PAR y la radiación UV proporcionan información sobre la cantidad de energía disponible para las plantas, lo que es crucial para ajustar las dosis y tiempos de aplicación de estos productos. Además, la evapotranspiración informa sobre las necesidades hídricas, asegurando que las plantas estén en el mejor estado posible para recibir tratamientos foliares. Las horas frio es un indicador clave para saber el momento exacto donde podemos aplicar bioestimulantes compensadores de fotosíntesis (azúcares reductores, magnesio, manganeso, hierro, zinc, calcio) o biostimulantes que atenúen el pico de estrés como algas marinas.

Manejo predictivo de cosecha: • Datos utilizados: Grados día de desarrollo (GDD) y horas frío.

La capacidad de predecir con precisión los tiempos de cosecha es esencial para maximizar la calidad y valor de las flores. Los Grados Día de Desarrollo (GDD) proporcionan una medida acumulativa del crecimiento de las plantas en relación con la temperatura, lo que permite a los floricultores anticipar el momento óptimo para la cosecha.. Al utilizar estos datos, los floricultures pueden tomar decisiones a cerca del manejo agronómico, nutricional y microclima en sus invernaderos, para adelantar o atrasar la producción según se necesite en los momentos claves que se necesite la flor.

Las estaciones meteorológicas representan una herramienta invaluable para los floricultores ecuatorianos, permitiendo un manejo más eficiente y efectivo de los cultivos. La monitorización constante de variables clave como la temperatura, la humedad, la radiación solar, la velocidad y dirección del viento, la evapotranspiración, la humedad del suelo y la humedad de hoja no solo ayuda a mejorar la calidad de las flores, sino que también reduce costos y aumenta la competitividad en el mercado internacional.

En un entorno donde el clima puede ser impredecible y los efectos del cambio climático son cada vez más evidentes, contar con datos precisos y en tiempo real se traduce en una ventaja competitiva significativa. Las fincas florícolas en Ecuador deben asegurarse de contar con estaciones meteorológicas bien equipadas y sus técnicos y gerentes deben monitorear constantemente los datos que estas proporcionan, generar y analizar data permanentemente, realizar correlaciones del manejo agronómico, nutricional con los datos de las estaciones meteorológicas. Esto les permitirá tomar decisiones informadas y adaptarse rápidamente a las condiciones cambiantes, garantizando así la sostenibilidad y viabilidad a largo plazo de la industria florícola en el país.

Disturbances in the traditional climate patterns, such as the increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme events - including torrential rains, prolonged droughts, heat waves, and frosts - are putting the stability and productivity of flower crops at risk.

These changes not only affect the quantity and quality of production, but also an increase in operational costs due to the need for the implementation of more complex mitigation and adaptation measures.

One of the most worrying impacts of climate change on flower growing is its influence on the growth cycle of plants, which can alter the timing of flowering. This is particularly critical in a business where synchronizing flowering with peak demand times, such as Valentine's Day or Mother's Day, is essential to maximizing profits. Adverse weather conditions can delay or advance flowering, thus affecting the availability of flowers at key market times. Furthermore, climate change has made predicting production increasingly difficult. Climate variability causes production to be brought forward or delayed, and sometimes the stems fail to induce adequate flowering due to these climate fluctuations.

Solar radiation is vital for photosynthesis. Insufficient radiation limits photosynthesis, therefore reducing productivity. Excessive radiation can cause heat damage and stress in plants, hence affecting flower quality.

PAR and DLI light

PAR light is used for photosynthesis. The DLI measures the total amount of PAR light received.

An adequate DLI maximizes both photosynthesis and productivity. An insufficient DLI decreases the photosynthetic rate and productivity. In roses, a DLI between 14 and 30 mol·m⁻²·d⁻¹ is ideal.

UV radiation

The part of the solar spectrum that can influence the growth and development of plants.

The controlled exposure to UV radiation enhances disease resistance, improving the quality of the flowers. Too much UV radiation can damage the DNA of plant cells, thus affecting growth and causing discoloration and burns.

José Ricardo Dávalos, por los 40 años de Florisol Para empezar, ¿puedes compartir con nosotros la historia detrás del nacimiento de Florisol hace 40 años? ¿Qué inspiró a fundar esta florícola?

En 1984, la floricultura en Colombia ya tenía una historia de alrededor de 25 años. Mi tío Mauricio, viendo que la zona de Tabacundo y Cayambe presentaban un clima similar al de la sabana colombiana, tuvo una idea ambiciosa: trasladar esa experiencia al Ecuador y empezar con el cultivo de rosas porque ya era una industria consolidada.

Fundando así, Agroflora, la primera finca del Ecuador.

A pesar de los desafíos, el proyecto despegó con éxito y seis meses después, junto a mi padre, deciden comprar otro terreno para plantar frutales, sin embargo, el asesor de agroflora sugirió "este terreno sería perfecto para crisantemos." Inspirado por esta idea, mi padre decidió lanzarse a la aventura y abrir la finca Florisol.

Recuerdo esos días con claridad. Tenía apenas doce años, fue una época de verdadero comienzo, porque, en aquel entonces, la industria de la floricultura estaba comenzando en el país, donde Florisol, era la tercera finca de flores del país. La ausencia de infraestructura era palpable, Florisol no tenía baños, ni comedor, ni bodega; simplemente nada.

No existían cámaras frigoríficas, ni opciones de carga aérea; estábamos partiendo desde cero.

Hoy celebramos cuatro décadas de historia y crecimiento.

Este logro se debe en gran medida al espíritu pionero de mi tío Mauricio, mi padre Ricardo Dávalos, y aquellos valientes que se aventuraron a dar forma a esta industria desde sus cimientos.

Desde sus modestos inicios, ¿cómo ha crecido Florisol a lo largo de estas cuatro décadas? ¿Cuáles fueron los momentos clave que impulsaron su crecimiento?

Mi padre siempre fue un hombre cauteloso. Le gustaba hacer las cosas de manera meticulosa, con seguridad y planificación. Esta filosofía se reflejó en el crecimiento gradual de Florisol. A diferencia de muchos que optaron por expandirse rápidamente, duplicando o triplicando su área de cultivo de la noche a la mañana, nosotros preferimos avanzar paso a paso.

Nuestra finca comenzó su trayectoria poco a poco, con tres hectáreas de terreno plano en la primera etapa. Este espacio incluía los invernaderos uno, dos y tres, que se fueron llenando gradualmente con nuestras flores.

Recuerdo que alrededor del año 1992, se nos presentó la oportunidad de adquirir la propiedad vecina en cáucaso.

Esta tierra, que anteriormente pertenecía a un arquitecto, se convirtió en parte de Florisol tras su fallecimiento, cumpliendo así una curiosa predicción que hizo durante la inauguración del invernadero uno. Este evento marcó otro hito en nuestro crecimiento, agregando otras tres hectáreas a nuestra extensión.

En 1996, con la compra de una propiedad en Cotopaxi, iniciamos una nueva fase de expansión junto a Piaveri, nuestra finca de rosas, comenzando con cuatro hectáreas y expandiéndonos gradualmente hasta alcanzar aproximadamente diez hectáreas.

A medida que pasaban los años, continuamos buscando oportunidades para crecer. Adquirimos otra propiedad contigua a Florisol, sumando otras cuatro hectáreas a nuestras operaciones. La adquisición de Clarivel en 19992000 fue otro paso significativo en nuestro crecimiento.

Así, año tras año, avanzamos con cautela, pero con determinación, siempre apuntando a un crecimiento constante del 10%, hasta llegar a las aproximadamente 45 hectáreas que hoy conforman Florisol.

En el camino, seguramente se enfrentaron a desafíos significativos. ¿Podrías contarnos sobre algunos de los mayores obstáculos que Florisol ha superado a lo largo de los años y cómo los abordaron?

Mi padre se enfrentó a uno de los mayores desafíos cuando los productores estadounidenses lanzaron juicios contra los rosicultores y productores de flores en Ecuador, acusándolos de prácticas de dumping, es decir, de vender por debajo del costo en el mercado de Estados Unidos.

Mientras que los rosicultores eran numerosos y contaban con respaldo, nosotros, como productores exclusivos de crisantemos, nos vimos obligados a defendernos solos.

A lo largo de este viaje de 40 años, ¿cuáles consideras que han sido los logros más memorables de Florisol? ¿Hay algún hito en particular del que estén especialmente orgullosos?

Pocos productores en el mundo pueden afirmar con certeza que su producto es el mejor, pero mi padre alcanzó este hito y nosotros lo mantenemos con orgullo.

Para nosotros, poder afirmar que nuestro crisantemo es el mejor del mundo es un logro verdaderamente extraordinario, uno que nos distingue de manera única en la industria. Es una afirmación audaz que respaldamos con calidad y dedicación.

Segunda Generación

Mi padre, a la cabeza de Florisol, asumió la responsabilidad de preparar toda la información junto con nuestro abogado en Estados Unidos. Gracias a una presentación sólida en los tres juicios, salimos indemnes de penalidades. Fue un desafío monumental que superamos con éxito.

A lo largo de nuestra trayectoria, también hemos enfrentado momentos difíciles. Recuerdo cuando Florisol comenzó produciendo pompones, una variedad de crisantemo en forma de spray, y tuvimos que detener su producción en

Esta distinción, otorgada por una institución internacional, la más rigurosa que existe. Estos dos logros son, para nosotros, los más significativos. Representan el fruto de décadas de arduo trabajo, dedicación y pasión por lo que hacemos. Son testimonio de nuestro compromiso con la excelencia y la responsabilidad hacia nuestro entorno y nuestra comunidad.

Hemos experimentado contratiempos, entre ellos, la mortalidad de nuestras flores, como gypsophila e hipericum, y nos hemos visto obligados a abandonar productos que anteriormente producíamos, lo que nos ha llevado a sufrir pérdidas financieras, como ocurrió con el calanchoe hace unos años.

En 2013, enfrentamos un ataque aterrador del minador, un insecto que pone huevos en las hojas y cuyas larvas las destruyen desde adentro, formando túneles minados.

Este problema amenazaba con cerrarnos puertas en importantes mercados como Estados Unidos, Chile y Japón. Como este, enfrentamos numerosos desafíos agronómicos a lo largo de los años, pero hemos demostrado salir victoriosos gracias a nuestra creatividad y dedicación.

Hemos implementado una variedad de soluciones, desde el uso intensivo de aspiradoras para succionar los insectos hasta sopladoras que los expulsaban con una pantalla de plástico y pegamento. También utilizamos trampas, seleccionamos cuidadosamente el follaje infectado para irradiarlo, aplicamos fumigaciones y quemamos desechos para evitar la supervivencia de las pupas. Estas soluciones no solo requerían una inversión considerable, sino que también salvaron nuestros cultivos en momentos críticos.

Q: Please tell the world more about yourself. Share more about the most important moments in your life which led you to create your own magazine 'Ecuador y sus Flores'. When did you start your involvement in the floral industry, why, and who inspired you to do so?

Fernando:

We achieved it, and from that moment on, we focused on publishing an edition of our magazine every quarter. It wasn't always easy, but little by little we became the benchmark in the floriculture sector, maintaining our independence and focusing on promoting this business from our niche. After the third year, my partner left to work in another industry, and I took over the entire management of the magazine."

Q: What is your magazine 'Ecuador y sus Flores' about? What makes it so unique in the market and what type of content and information do you share in it?

Fernando: "The main objective of the magazine is to promote Ecuadorian floriculture worldwide. We developed a strategy to publish articles of interest for farm owners and managers, commercial and technical staff, suppliers of inputs, and breeders of varieties, and thus cover most areas of interest in the floriculture sector. We also seek to include contributions from cargo companies. It is important that they share the processes developed to better serve their clients who buy flowers and hire them to handle all the logistics of the flowers purchased from Ecuadorian farms.It was a great challenge to get the engineers in charge of the crops to write about their daily tasks on how to face and control diseases, how to nourish the plants,

"I worked in the floriculture sector for a few years through my brother Francisco's company, where we served more than 40 flower farms by implementing administrative accounting software. The magazine 'Ecuador y sus Flores' was born when the country had already established itself as a benchmark in flower production. Among several names we analyzed, this one fulfilled the idea of telling the world about the benefits of Ecuadorian floriculture, and thus the specialized magazine Ecuador y sus Flores was born in September 2003."

"One of our greatest successes in gaining the trust of our advertisers has been distributing the Ecuador y sus Flores magazine for free at major fairs worldwide in Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Bogotá, Moscow, Brussels, Amsterdam, etc., where Ecuadorian flowers are exhibited to buyers from around the world. At the same time, the graphic coverage of these international events highlights the importance of Ecuadorian farms. We formed alliances with several companies to allow the distribution of our magazine and reach the largest number of farms, a task we continue to do by continuously updating our databases.From the beginning, it was a priority to ensure that the print quality was the best. The flower expresses the beauty of nature, and the work of breeders has been to enhance that beauty, so when publishing a magazine about flowers, it must be sober and elegant."

Q: Why is the Ecuadorian flower industry so important to the rest of the world and how do you show/share this through your magazine?

Q: What do you like the most about working in the flower industry?

Fernando: "What I admire most about this industry is the resourcefulness of flower growers. Not being directly involved in cultivation or commercialization myself, I enjoy observing how each challenge and problem is faced. We live in a wonderful country, but with significant shortcomings that have led us to face political and social problems, natural disasters, political corruption, and drug trafficking."

Fernando: "Being on the equatorial line, hence the name of our country Ecuador and our magazine Ecuador y sus Flores, we convey to the world that our flowers are grown in a wonderful place with twelve hours of sunlight each day. In addition, our fertile valleys lie on the slopes of the Andes, ranging from 1,500 to 3,500 meters above sea level, which increases the intensity of the sun's rays. Because of these particularities, we produce the best flowers in the world— stronger, larger, with more intense colors, and greater resistance to travel and vase life. This combination of attributes is what makes buyers from all over the world prefer them."

Q: How do you unite people in the industry and what message do you wish to convey to the world through 'Ecuador y sus Flores'?

Fernando: "The flower business is based on a chain of actors.

En el 2023 gracias a la experiencia que nos ha dado la producción de láminas, nos consolidamos como productores de cajas volviéndonos así, el principal proveedor de empaques para el sector floricultor.

¿Cuál es el objetivo y la visión de Megastock?

La visión a largo plazo en Megastock es consolidarnos como el proveedor líder de empaques para el sector floricultor, no solo en Ecuador, sino también en mercados internacionales. Queremos seguir innovando y mejorando nuestros procesos para ofrecer productos de la más alta calidad, siempre enfocados en las necesidades específicas de nuestros clientes.

Además, buscamos expandir nuestra capacidad de producción y logística para asegurar una entrega eficiente y oportuna, incluso en tiempos de crisis. La sostenibilidad también es una parte fundamental de nuestra visión; queremos implementar prácticas más ecológicas y utilizar materiales sostenibles para contribuir a un futuro más verde.

¿Cuéntanos cuál es la ventaja competitiva de megastock? ¿Qué beneficio pueden entregar al sector floricultor?

Cuéntanos la historia de Megastock. ¿Cuándo comenzó la empresa? ¿Por qué nació esta idea?

En 1998 empezamos como distribuidores de empaques de flores. En el año 2014 nos convertimos en productores constituyendo MEGASTOCK a través de la fusión de dos empresas.

Megastock se destaca por varios aspectos clave que han contribuido a su éxito y reputación en el mercado: Ubicación Estratégica: Como mencionamos, la planta de Megastock está estratégicamente ubicada entre

Nuestros inicios fueron limitados en recursos, nuestro capital inicial fue de $500, el transporte fue una camioneta pequeña y el material se almacenaba en una bodega en el centro de la ciudad de Quito. Con una nómina de 3 personas, empezamos a viajar y visitar a nuestros clientes y fue así que empezamos a entender las necesidades del sector floricultor.

En el 2007 implementamos nuevas líneas de productos y distribuciones exclusivas a nuestro portafolio de clientes como la línea de hidratantes, ligas y grapas.

En el 2014 vimos la necesidad de convertirnos en productores buscando ofrecer la calidad y el servicio que el mercado demandaba.

En el año 2022 con la confianza y una gran inversión de los accionistas, adquirimos un predio donde pudimos planificar y construir nuestra propia planta de producción ubicada en la ciudad de Tabacundo.

Especialización en el Sector Floricultor: Megastock se destaca por ser una planta dedicada al 100% al sector floricultor. Esta especialización nos permite enfocar toda nuestra línea de producción en la calidad, asegurando que cada producto cumpla con las especificaciones exactas que este mercado requiere. Nuestra maquinaria está diseñada para ser eficiente y utilizar materias primas de alta calidad, como papeles de fibra virgen.

Nuestro enfoque ha sido producir e importar todo lo que el sector floricultor requiere para el empaque de su flor.

Sobre la variedad de tamaños de cajas que la industria florícola demanda, ¿qué se puede hacer para optimizar y reducir los tipos y tamaños de cajas para lograr una estandarización a nivel nacional?

La tendencia a nivel mundial es optimizar el peso de la caja utilizando papeles de gramaje más livianos, de fibra virgen y manteniendo una alta calidad para garantizar la misma resistencia que requiere el empaque. Esto también representaría un ahorro en costos de transporte aéreo.

Otro factor en el que queremos trabajar junto a nuestros clientes es en la estandarización de medidas de cajas para lograr reducir los costos de empaque y los tiempos de entrega.

Ecuador y sus Flores llevó a cabo este exitoso evento con más de 50 floristas ecuatorianos que pudieron ser parte de dos talleres prácticos, que se desarrolló en las instalaciones de Expoflores. El primero, dictado por el ecuatoriano Gabo de las Flores y el segundo por Juan Villanueva quien viajó desde Nueva York para dictar su clase magistral gracias a Fresh-O-fair.

Contamos con la participación de algunos proveedores como: Gift Shop, Innova Educa Center y Bioglass.

Los floristas pudieron trabajar con la maravillosa flor de: Rosas del Corazón, Naranjo Roses, Mystic Flowers, Ecoador Farms, Endless Spring Farms, Danzinger y Latin Fresh. Y pudimos contar con el gentil auspicio de marcas como Fresflor y AMC. Los participantes tuvieron la oportunidad de formar parte de un conversatorio con tres importantes productores de flores: Francisco Sáenz, Adrián Moreano y Luis Arguello, en el que se trataron temas de interés e iniciaron conversaciones sobre el camino que debe tomar el mercado local para poder crecer y volverse atractivo y seguro para los productores.

Se abordaron temas sobre la calidad de la flor que reciben los floristas y la calidad que están dispuestos a comprar, así como la innovación y tendencias del arte floral y un recorrido por las diferentes variedades.

Fue una gran oportunidad de generar grandes propuestas de mejora y posibles soluciones logísticas para el mercado de los floristas locales.

E L A RT E D EL IKE B ANA El Ikebana es arte, el arte floral japonés, porque integra muchos de los elementos para ser considerado como tal: nacido y cultivado en el ambiente de serena contemplación de los templos budistas alrededor del siglo VII, utiliza todos los materiales, por rústicos o delicados que sean para representar la convivencia espiritual con los elementos presentes en la naturaleza como son el aire, el agua y la tierra.

A través de la creación de composiciones florales, con una profunda carga simbólica y espiritual, esta disciplina trasciende la mera decoración para adentrarse en un mundo de armonía o un estado de ánimo especifico, utilizando la imaginación, lo que permite que cada arreglo sea original, irrepetible y también perecible. El Ikebana se rige por principios filosóficos, estéticos y de técnicas, que

lo diferencia de otros estilos de arreglos florales, de la disposición casual de flores en un jarrón. Este arte japonés busca realzar la belleza intrínseca de cada elemento natural y transmitir emociones a través de sus composiciones.

El principio fundamental de Ikebana es la representación de la trilogía universal: Cielo (Shin), Hombre (Soe) y Tierra ( Hikae).

Este Arte, representa para los que lo practicamos, una invitación a la pausa, la contemplación, meditación, un momento con nuestro yo interior. Cada composición, se convierte en una obra de arte efímera que nos recuerda la belleza del momento presente y la importancia de vivir en armonía con nuestro entorno.
