l año 2013 vino con algunas novedades.

La apertura del nuevo aeropuerto, en medio de una fecha pico para la floricultura, con la complejidad que implica la implementación de una infraestructura nueva y los cambios que deben darse en lo referente a nuestro negocio los que, estamos seguros, serán para bien. Así lo esperamos sinceramente.

Un nuevo período presidencial con un contundente triunfo y mayoría en el congreso, nos hace pensar que implementarán prontamente los cambios en leyes y políticas que se han quedado represadas en estos años, con la correspondiente incertidumbre que generan.

Un lado positivo, sin embargo, es el hecho de que el nivel de confrontación disminuirá y por lo menos podremos trabajar con más tranquilidad, sabiendo a qué atenernos.

Debemos seguir invirtiendo en el área comercial, planificar la visita a nuevos mercados, mantener y cuidar a los clientes actuales. Una manera de lograrlo es asistiendo y haciendo presencia en las distintas ferias que hay en el mundo para que nos conozcan y podamos conocer a nuestros clientes.

El buscar nuevas maneras de llegar al consumidor, optimizando nuestras inversiones en publicidad

y mercadeo, uniendo esfuerzos entre el sector privado y público para optimizar los recursos, siempre será una herramienta adecuada.

he year 2013 came with some news.

The opening of the new airport, amid a peak date for floriculture, with the complexity that involves the implementation of a new infrastructure and the changes that must occur in relation to our business, which we are sure will be for the better.

We sincerely hope so.

A new presidential term with a crushing victory and majority in

Congress, suggests that the changes in laws and policies that have been for so long held up in recent years, will be promptly implemented, with the corresponding uncertainty that they will generate. A positive side, however, is the fact that the level of confrontation will decrease and at least we will be able to work with more ease, knowing what to expect.

We must continue to invest in the commercial area, plan visits to new markets, maintain and care for existing customers. One way to achieve this is by attending and making a presence in the various fairs held worldwide to let us be known and for us to know our clients.

To search for new ways to reach consumers, optimizing our investments in advertising and marketing, joining efforts between the private and public sectors to optimize resources, will always be a suitable tool.

We see within the sector some consolidation and growth of crop areas.

These are parameters that indicate that business is going forward and invites others to find ways to grow. We hope this will be a year of important changes in the sector.

Como se explica el fenómeno de variedades nuevas en manos de floricultores africanos como primera opción para los hibridadores?

emos cerrado un nuevo ciclo comercial, determinante bajo todo punto de vista, los mercados han dado señales claras de evolución, muchas de esas señales las hemos pronosticado y otras jamás imaginamos que podían suceder.

En los últimos 10 años la floricultura ecuatoriana ha sido protagonistas de la Industria Florícola Mundial.

Este último año ese privilegio le correspondió a los floricultores africanos; su desarrollo y aprendizaje es impresionante básicamente porque han acortado a la mitad el tiempo de aprendizaje que tomó a los floricultores ecuatorianos para desarrollar una industria profesional y competitiva a

nivel mundial.

Este desarrollo de la floricultura africana ha colocado en una situación complicada a los importadores europeos especializados en flor ecuatoriana, ya que sus competidores, especializados en flor africana, ganan terreno ofreciendo no solo calidad y precio, sino además algo que no esperábamos, variedades nuevas y exclusivas.

¿

Cómo se explica este fenómeno de variedades nuevas en manos de floricultores africanos como primera opción para los hibridadores?

Muy sencillo y muy preocupante, El crecimiento de hectareaje especialmente en Kenia sobrepasa las 100 hectáreas por año, más la renovación de siembras obsoletas comercialmente, que deben ser cantidades anuales importantes sin duda, obligan, seducen y atraen

competitivamente a los hibridadores. ¿Y cómo culparles cuando se analiza las características de negociación en esa parte del mundo? Pago de contado y anticipado de las regalías, (eso sí a un precio promedio de $ 0,60) , y el hecho de que las compañías florícolas por sí solas tienen una capacidad de compra equivalente al monto total de plantas que compran todos los floricultores ecuatorianos de una variedad nueva. ¿Es sostenible este fenómeno?.... pues no solo que es sostenible sino que se debería esperar un mayor crecimiento de siembra nueva y variedades nuevas en los siguientes años. Realidades como la participación de más del 60% en el segmento de tallos medianos y cortos en el mercado ruso y el doble negocio que representa cultivar flores en África… el tradicional -producir y vender- y la utilidad financiera por diferencial cambiario.

e closed a new business cycle, determining from every point of view, the markets have evidenced clear signs of evolution, many of these signs have been predicted by us and others we never even imagined could have happened.

During these past 10 years, the Ecuadorian floriculture was the protagonist within the world’s flower growing business, but this year such privilege was awarded to the African floricultures. Their development and learning is impressive, basically because they have cut to half the learning time that took Ecuadorian floricultures to develop a professional and competitive industry at world level.

This development held by the African floricultures, has placed the European importers, specialized in Ecuadorian flowers, in a rather complicated position, since their competitors, specialized in African flowers, are gaining ground by offering not only quality and price, but also something else we did not expect, new and exclusive varieties.

What explains this phenomenon of new varieties in the hands of African floricultures as the first choice for breeders?

Very simple and very worrying, the growth of the extensions of land dedicated to this business exceeds one hundred (100) per year, especially in Kenya, plus the renewal of commercially obsolete crops, annual amounts definitely important enough to evidently force, seduce and greatly attract breeders.

And how to blame them, when analyzing the negotiation characteristics on that

part of the world: advanced cash payment of the royalties, though at an average price of $ 0.60 cents; flower growing businesses that each alone, have a buying capacity equivalent to that of the total amount of plants from a new variety bought by all the Ecuadorian flower growers.

Is this phenomenon sustainable?... well not only is it sustainable, but further growth of new crops and new varieties should be expected in the following years>; realities such as the participation of more than 60% in the segment of medium and short sized stems within the Russian market and the business twice depicting to cultivate flowers in Africa… the traditional – produce and sell – and the financial utility because of the exchange differential.

Important times of change, which require we become increasingly efficient.

C

ada día oímos de diferentes investigadores y científicos, la necesidad de usar abonos orgánicos en nuestros suelos como una forma de combatir el desgaste de los mismos.

¿

Qué debemos entender por desgaste? Para responder a esta

pregunta reflexionemos un poco sobre qué es nuestro suelo y qué aspectos debemos tomar en consideración a la hora de tomar decisiones sobre su tratamiento y fertilización.

Condiciones físicas Nuestro suelo tiene unas características físicas que determinan si es arcilloso, franco arcilloso, franco arenoso o arenoso; estas condiciones son muy difíciles de cambiar por lo que tenemos que aprender a vivir con ellas pero buscando la forma más efectiva de obtener los mejores rendimientos.

No se pueden cambiar las condiciones físicas del suelo pero lo que sí podemos cambiar es la relación de sus componentes a la hora de fertilizar. Los suelos sueltos tienen una relación calcio/magnesio mucho mayor que en los suelos pesados, por lo que en términos generales podríamos decir que a la hora de fertilizar suelos sueltos nuestra relación calcio/ magnesio debe ser 3/1 y en suelos pesados 7/1.

Condiciones químicas En este apartado me quiero referir a los elementos propios de nuestro suelo. Los que consideramos principales son: nitrógeno, fósforo y potasio, pero no debemos olvidarnos del calcio, magnesio, hierro y otros.

La mejor manera de saber qué tenemos en nuestro suelo es enviar una muestra del mismo a un buen laboratorio y luego de un análisis saber qué elementos son los que predominan.

Son alrededor de 12 elementos los que tradicionalmente son tomados en cuenta en los análisis de suelo. Pero en realidad el número de componentes supera los 60. Aunque no sea posible analizar por separado a cada uno de estos elementos, sabemos que están ahí y que nuestras plantas los están consumiendo.

Microbiología del suelo En este punto quiero decir que debemos considerar al suelo como un ente viviente y no un soporte inerte para las raíces de nuestras plantas en donde ellas buscan ancla y toman tanto el agua así como los elementos químicos que existen en el suelo y aquellos que aportamos y que normalmente son productos sintéticos.

En el suelo existen una serie de microorganismos tanto aeróbicos como anaeróbicos y entre ellos bacterias, hongos, levaduras y otros que son los que le dan vida; son los responsables de que aquellos elementos químicos que están en el suelo, se vuelvan disponibles a las plantas, además de realizar otras tareas.

Ahora creo que sí podemos responder a la pregunta inicial: ¿qué debemos entender por desgaste de nuestros suelos?

Debemos entender por desgaste de nuestros suelos, al desequilibrio de los tres aspectos mencionados debido a nuestras prácticas agrícolas y sin duda el que mayor afectación recibe es la microbiología del mismo y a la que prácticamente no prestamos atención.

Un gran enemigo de la microbiología es el arado, ya que al dar la vuelta al suelo, se mata los organismos aeróbicos y anaeróbicos por cambio de posición de los mismos. Abonos químicos como el muriato de potasio es otro gran enemigo por la gran cantidad de cloro que posee.

Para poder contrarrestar estos efectos tenemos que cambiar nuestras prácticas agrícolas y contribuir para que la microbiología del suelo vuelva a estar presente y sin duda los abonos orgánicos contribuyen para ello. De estos abonos orgánicos, los bioles son de gran ayuda y de gran importancia ya que su contribución de microorganismos, así como de elementos trazas, es muy significativa.

Tenemos que tener cuidado para que la elaboración de los bioles sea adecuada, que tenga el tiempo de proceso suficiente y dependiendo de la materia prima que utilicemos, sus efectos serán beneficiosos o no. w w w. i n f l o r . e c

E

very day we hear from different researchers and scientists about the need to use organic fertilizers on our land as a means to battle against soil wear and tear.

What should we understand as wear and tear? To answer this question, let us reflect a bit on what our soil is and which aspects must we consider at the time of decision making about its treatment and fertilization.

Physical conditions Our soil has certain physical characteristics that determine if it is a clay soil, clay loam soil, sandy loam soil, or sandy soil. These conditions are very difficult to change, which is why we have to learn to live with them but looking for the most effective way to obtain the best results.

The physical conditions of the soil cannot be changed, but what we can change is the relationship of its components at the time of fertilization. Loose soils have much higher a

calcium / magnesium relationship than in those of heavy soils, so in overall terms we can say that when the time comes of fertilizing loose soils, our calcium / magnesium relationship should be 3/1 and in heavy soils 7/1.

Chemical conditions In this section, I would like to refer to the elements proper of our soil. The ones we consider to be the main ones are: nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, but we must not forget about calcium, magnesium, iron and others.

The best way to know what we have in our soil is to send a sample to a good laboratory and after it has been analyzed, know with certainty which elements are the ones that predominate in it.

About 12 elements are the ones that traditionally are taken into consideration in soil analysis; although the real number of components found are above 60.

Even though it will not be possible to separately analyze each one of these elements, we must know that they are present in the soil and that our plants are consuming them.

Soil microbiology At this point, I mean to say that we must consider soil as a living entity and not a nonliving support source for the roots of our plants, in which they seek an anchor and take from it both water, as well as the chemical elements that exist in soil and those others that we put in it and that normally are chemical products.

In the soil there are a number of both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms and among those can be found bacteria, fungi, yeasts and others that are the ones that give life to the soil; they are the ones that make possible for

those chemical elements that are in the soil to become available for plants, apart from carrying out other tasks.

Now I believe that we can answer the initial question: What should we understand by the waste and tear of our soils?

We must understand by the waste and tear of our soils, the imbalance of these three aspects mentioned before, due to our agricultural practices, and with no doubt, the most affected one is the microbiology of the soil, aspect to which we hardly pay attention at all.

A huge enemy of microbiology is the plow, since when turning the soil around, causes the death of the aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms that live in it because of their change of position.

Chemical fertilizers such as muriate of potash are another huge enemy, because of the great amount of chlorine it contains.

To counteract these effects, we have to change our agricultural practices and contribute to the presence of this microbiology in soil; and with no doubt at all, organic fertilizers contribute to this. Of these organic fertilizers, bioles are of great help and of enormous importance, since their contribution of microorganisms, as well as of trace elements is quite significant.

We have to be careful so that the development of these bioles is adequate, that it has enough processing time and depending on the raw materials we use, its effects be beneficial or not.

as nuevas instalaciones para carga, definitivamente serán mejores, más grandes y cómodas para agilizar el proceso de despacho de productos que se exporta por la nueva terminal.

El 90 % de lo que sale de este aeropuerto son flores, por lo que al unificar en una sola área los servicios de carga, la entrega de las cajas de flores para los distintos destinos a través de las agencias de carga deberá mejorar el servicio que estas prestan a las fincas (camiones de las fincas).

Sin duda habrá problemas al inicio, pero se irán solucionando para lograr disminuir los tiempos de entrega y que la flor mantenga su cadena de frio.

Las expectativas son grandes y esperamos que se cumplan.

La radiación solar Cuidado y protección

L

a radiación solar cumple un papel decisivo en la fotosíntesis de las plantas por cuanto proporciona la energía necesaria para la conversión del CO2 en carbohidratos esenciales, con ayuda del agua y los nutrientes que en general son aportados por el suelo.

Por ello es indispensable que haya una buena recepción y distribución de la radiación solar dentro de los invernaderos.

Una alta absorción de radiación solar por los cultivos de flores repercute en mayor peso y mejor coloración de los botones florales, mayor producción de materia seca, mayor firmeza de los tallos, mayor número de botones florales y una buena longevidad poscosecha. Por el contrario, la baja radiación solar ocasiona abcisión floral en cultivos como rosa, lirio y gladiolo (Fischer, 2007).

La radiación solar y la temperatura son responsables de la materia seca neta o final que se acumula en los diversos órganos de la planta, lo que a su vez regula aspectos como la productividad y la calidad del cultivo. Por ello es importante asegurar que los cultivos de flores reciban una radiación alta pero sin que las temperaturas diurnas

y nocturnas dentro de los invernaderos sean muy elevadas, ya que la ganancia neta de fotoasimilados se vería afectada por una respiración y un consumo energético altos en las plantas.

La radiación solar se puede expresar como brillo solar (estas son medidas intercambiables por medio de la fórmula de Angstrom que permite convertir horas de brillo en unidades de radiación solar 11). El brillo solar previo a la cosecha está altamente relacionado con la longevidad en poscosecha. De este modo la longevidad media de los claveles está asociada con el brillo solar medio durante los 14 días antes de corte. Por ejemplo, un aumento de 5 a 10 horas de brillo solar por día en los 14 días previos al corte redunda en una longevidad de 5 ó 10 días, respectivamente (Lancaster.

1974, citado por Fischer. 2007).

Es importante diferenciar algunos términos relacionados con la radiación solar y la luminosidad. La primera en

general se refiere a toda la radiación de onda corta proveniente del sol, en un espectro que fluctúa entre los 290 y los 4000 nm. La luz visible está comprendida dentro de este rango, pero solo en al porción entre 400 y 700 nm.

La radiación fotosintéticamente activa (llamada PAR y utilizada por las plantas en la fotosíntesis) está en un rango similar a la visible, pero es absorbida de modo diferente en las diversas bandas espectrales: con mayor intensidad en las bandas correspondientes a los colores azul y rojo, y es reflejada (no absorbida) en la banda que corresponde al color verde. Por ello las unidades que se refieren a la luminosidad total proveniente de un cuerpo, como los foot candles no son del todo útiles en los estudios relacionados con la fotosíntesis en las plantas.

La radiación PAR se expresa en términos de energía (W*m2) o de cuantos (quantum) (µmol *m2s-1) (Taiz y Zeiger, 2002). Para convertir estas unidades se puede utilizar la expresión: µmol *m2s-1 = Wm-2*4,6, que es una aproximación a la equivalencia entre tales unidades en días normales, con radiación solar directa y difusa12.

Por otra parte, las cantidades de radiación solar, en términos energéticos, se pueden expresar en forma instantánea, como vatio por metro cuadrado (Wm-2) o integrada en el tiempo, como kWm2día-1 si es integrada para periodos diarios (ldeam, 2005).

Se debe señalar que las tasas fotosintéticas netas en los cultivos dependen de la acción integrada del CO2, el agua, los nutrientes y la temperatura del aire.

En los procesos fotosintéticos se alcanza un máximo de productividad con valores de la PAR de 450*W*m2, con concentraciones de CO2 entre 700 y 3100 ppm y con temperaturas de la

entro de un viaje de visitas al sur de Europa, aceptamos la invitación de un cliente para presentar varias variedades de rosas en la feria Flomart 2012 en Padova, tuvimos la oportunidad de ser los únicos Ecuatorianos en visitar una feria donde se exhibía en un 80% plantas y accesorios y un 20% flor cortada, se pudo apreciar que la presencia de la rosa ecuatoriana definitivamente copa el mercado Italiano a través de importadores Italianos u Holandeses, la rosa de África o Colombia realmente no alcanza mayor participación

en el mercado.

Terminada la feria y visita a varias zonas de Italia, se confirma la tendencia de las estadísticas de crecimiento que registran nuestras exportaciones, el consumo básicamente es de tallo corto, salvo en Freedom y ciertas variedades largas que compran en 60, 70 u 80cm y cada vez más los importadores Italianos dependen menos de Holanda para conseguir nuestra rosa.

Considero que el crecimiento de Ecuador y el mantener este mercado debe acompañarse de participación país en eventos de esta naturaleza o creación de misiones comerciales que permitan a las

fincas conocer más de este gran mercado que muchas veces por desconocimiento presenta problemas de cobro o precios.

Debemos tener en cuenta siempre que la crisis de la zona Euro se siente en cada conversación con clientes que buscan

siempre precio bajo, pero que al hacer paquetes de variedades pueden tornarse interesantes en volumen y precio, pero siempre debe ir acompañado de un estricto análisis del riesgo.

La población Italiana llega a los 61.000.000 de habitantes con cultura de flores y plantas que si bien hoy por hoy son parte de una zona en crisis, cuentan con muchos recursos y potencial para salir adelante y continuar siendo de las economías más importantes de Europa que no puede estar desatendida por nuestro sector.

feria que se realiza en las instalaciones de la subasta FloraHolland.

También estuvimos presentes en la feria IFTF 2012, feria que en su tercera edición se realizó con un importante participación de expositores y visitantes.

The brand new internet presence of CIOPORA, which was launched on November 20, welcomed its visitors with a fresh and colorful design. However, the eye-candy looks is not everything the new CIOPORA.org has to offer. The recent re-launch was primarily aimed at the enhancement of the user experience, as well as update and restructuring of the contents. Within the framework of CIOPORA’s communication strategy the new website was designed to become the central source of information about CIOPORA, its activities and positions on IP by consolidating all the available digital contents about the association.

The new features of CIOPORA.org include a dynamic news-slider screening the snippets of the cross-referenced log of CIOPORA’s latest activities, an all-new CIOPORA Publications category with a full collection of the association’s appearances in media and press-releases, as well as a quick navigation menu for direct access to the most important facts about the community of plant breeders.
