Editorial

Han sido unos meses muy especiales para nuestro sector; alta demanda de flor, escasez de fletes aéreos y su consecuente incremento de precios.

Estas circunstancias han hecho que los floricultores estén más movidos que otros años, tratando de aprovechar estas circunstancias, exigiendo que los compradores se pongan al día con sus cuentas para ser atendidos.

Estos vaivenes del negocio no suceden frecuentemente, son muchos los años en que el comprador imponía las condiciones y los productores debían acogerlas.

Ha sido un año muy especial, con mejores resultados de los esperado y con cambios de dueños en algunas fincas. Los grupos grandes han seguido consolidando su participación en el mercado adquiriendo fincas, o tierras para crecer.

La escasez y encarecimiento de los fletes aéreos y marítimos también han afectado a nuestra industria como a las otras. Los insumos como cartón, plástico, agroquímicos, empaques, herramientas, se han encarecido; esto nos obliga a ser más acuciosos en el manejo de los costos para mantener nuestra competitividad.

Sin duda se sienten los cambios que el Gobierno impulsa; la actitud que transmite es suficiente para contagiar el optimismo y esto es una gran ayuda para el ánimo de los colaboradores en nuestras empresas.

Estuvimos en la International Floriculture Expo 2021, IFE en Miami, que se desarrolló del 16 al 18 de Septiembre. Una feria con mucha expectativa, poca concurrencia, pero de alta calidad, lo que mantuvo ocupados a los expositores, y eso es positivo. Hubo mucha presencia de flor tinturada y preservada. No estuvieron presentes los grandes consorcios productores de flores, y tampoco asistieron los compradores de las grandes cadenas por las restricciones que sus empresas tienen con su personal para asistir a estos eventos.

Sin embargo, fue una muy buena feria y los expositores estuvieron muy contentos con los resultados obtenidos.

Esperamos que la pandemia vaya cediendo terreno a la normalidad y volvamos a encontrarnos en las distintas ferias programadas para el año 2022.

Editorial We have had a few months with very special characteristics for our sector: high demand for flowers, price increases, and an increase in the cost of the few existing freights.

These circumstances have made flower growers become more active than in other years, trying to take advantage of these circumstances, demanding buyers to be up to date with their accounts in order to be able to process their requests. These ups and downs of the business do

not happen frequently. Rather, we have had many years in which the buyers were the ones imposing conditions, and the producers had no other choice but to accept them.

This has been a very special year, with better results than expected and with great changes in motion for the owners of some farms. The larger groups have continued to consolidate their market share by acquiring farms or land in order to grow.

The shortage and the rising costs of air and sea freights have also affected our industry as well as others. Supplies and materials have become more expensive, such as the case of cardboard, plastic, agrochemicals, packaging, tools, etc. This forces us to be more careful in managing costs to be able to maintain our competitiveness.

Without a doubt, the changes that the Government promotes are felt. The attitude it transmits is enough to spread optimism and this is of great help for the spirit and encouragement of the collaborators in our companies.

We were present at the International Floriculture Expo 2021, IFE in Miami, which took place from September 16th to the 18th. A fair with high expectations, little attendance, but of high quality, keeping the exhibitors busy, which is a good thing. We saw quite a lot of dyed and preserved flowers. And although the large flower producing consortiums were not present, neither were the buyers of the large chains due to the restrictions that their companies have placed regarding their staff attending these types of events. In summary, it was a very good fair, and the exhibitors were extremely happy with the results obtained.

We hope that the pandemic will gradually give ground to normality, so that we can meet again at the different fairs scheduled for the year 2022.

Entrevista a Eduardo Letort Gerente del Grupo Hoja Verde

Este grupo está compuesto por cuatro fincas, Hoja Verde, Flor Mare, Joygarden y El Carmen, que suman 55 hectáreas de rosas. ¿Cómo ha sido el trabajo de ustedes desde que se inició la pandemia?

Esto empezó a mediados de Marzo del dos mil veinte.

Las flores no son un producto de primera necesidad, o al menos eso pensábamos. Todos los escenarios que hacíamos eran negativos, nos preguntábamos si esta situación se va a prolongar hasta Mayo, hasta la fiesta de Madres, o incluso hasta Septiembre; hacíamos los corridos económicos financieros para ver hasta cuando durábamos, y así fuimos armando nuestra estrategia.

Lo primero que hicimos fue armar un equipo de crisis, con personal administrativo, de talento humano, de ventas, de cultivo y técnicos, con los que nos reuníamos dos o tres veces por semana. En la parte financiera trabajábamos en los flujos de los proveedores y las cuentas por cobrar.

tres meses, para reconocer esas horas a nuestros trabajadores y a partir de Julio les empezamos a pagar el cien por ciento (100%) de horas, más el veinte y cinco (25%) de Abril, Mayo, Junio y para Octubre estábamos pagando el cien por ciento (100 %) a todos los trabajadores.

Por suerte habíamos salido de un buen Valentín, y ya habíamos cobrado una gran parte de lo vendido, con lo cual estábamos económicamente bastante estables, y esto permitió que las decisiones que tomamos no sean tan apresuradas.

Las decisiones equivocadas de otras fincas como cierre de bloques, corte de las matas a la base, recorte de personal, la no renovación de variedades y el hecho de que algunas fincas estaban golpeadas desde el paro de Octubre y otras en expansión, hicieron que no haya suficiente flor en el mercado.

Decidimos pinchar algunas variedades en el quince por ciento (15 %) de la finca por las próximas tres semanas, pensando que si ese repique cae para Madres y el mercado se reactiva, estaríamos bien; si es que veíamos que el mercado no se reactiva, volveríamos a pinchar y repetiríamos el proceso. Eso fue lo que hicimos.

Nosotros en cambio, en ningún momento paramos de renovar variedades. El grupo de crisis funcionó sensacionalmente, no despedimos personal, salvo los que estaban a prueba y tenían menos de 90 días; en la parte administrativa se negoció la salida con dos o tres empleados por que ya estábamos en el proceso de fusionar las compañías.

Nunca dejamos de vender. Estados Unidos no se cerró totalmente, manteníamos un veinte por ciento (20 %) del mercado y Europa sí cerró. A mediados de abril se abrió una parte del mercado en Alemania y a los supermercados en Suiza les permitieron la venta de flores para la fiesta de Madres. En este momento se abrió casi todo el mercado europeo, y por las buenas decisiones tomadas, tuvimos un buen pico de flor para esta fiesta.

De hecho, en el año dos mil vente (2020) la tendencia de los precios fue a la baja, todos bajamos los precios tres o cuatro centavos promedio. Al final del año solo salimos con cinco por ciento (5 %) de diferencia en ventas con relación al año dos mil diecinueve (2019). La utilidad en estos dos años fue similar, porque también hicimos reducción de costos, bajamos y redujimos en todos los ámbitos que pudimos y fuimos más eficientes; eso permitió neutralizar de alguna manera el impacto del COVID.

Otra decisión que tomamos al inicio de la pandemia fue trabajar solamente el setenta y cinco por ciento (75 %) de las horas, es decir treinta horas a la semana; los trabajadores empezaron a recibir el setenta y cinco por ciento (75 %) de su sueldo. Siempre llevamos una contabilidad de las horas trabajadas durante estos

Lo más interesante de esta pandemia es que las flores se volvieron un producto de primera necesidad, así como hay alimentos para el cuerpo, hay alimentos para el alma y las flores se volvieron el alimento que ayudó a la estabilidad emocional de muchas personas.

¿Qué efecto piensas que tendrá en el mercado la reciente consolidación de los grupos grandes?

Los grupos grandes en el país son cinco, de esos la mayoría vende en el mass market americano. Yo pienso que el impacto en el mercado de estos grupos grandes afectará más al mercado atendido por la flor colombiana que al atendido por la flor ecuatoriana, ya que casi el ochenta y cinco por ciento (85%) de las ventas colombianas son para supermercados.

De estos cinco grupos, cuatro van a acaparar ese mass market americano. Passion va a ser un jugador a nivel mundial porque tiene cultivos en África, tiene M&M, una comercializadora en Holanda, y son fuertes proveedores para Inglaterra. Elit también va a ser un jugador a nivel mundial en los mercados internacionales.

Hay otro jugador importante en el mercado; estos son los pequeños productores, en Cayambe al norte, con unas trescientas o cuatrocientas hectáreas nuevas, y los del sur (Lasso) con ciento cincuenta o doscientas hectáreas nuevas. Se han instalado postcosechas que compran y procesan a los productores pequeños de Cayambe y del Sur, y con sus propias marcas comercializan esta flor, especialmente para el mercado ruso.

Creo que va a haber nichos de mercado para empresas que logren soportar los desafíos que vienen y sean eficientes. ¿Qué opinas del tema de la carga aérea y las dificultades por las que está atravesando?

Ese es un tema que está agravado por la pandemia.

Agravado porque los contenedores se quedaron vacíos en muchos puertos que cerraron; por eso mucha de la carga se la está haciendo por avió: El precio de los contenedores ha subido a quince mil dólares ($15000). En este caso el Ecuador es uno de los países menos afectado, gracias al banano, que tiene la misma ruta que va y viene con contenedores.

Por eso en general la carga está afectada porque cuesta casi lo mismo mandar por avión que por contenedor marítimo, hay fletes que pagan más que las flores para mover cualquier tipo de productos en el mundo. Inclusive algunos grupos florícolas grandes están charteando vuelos. Creo que es algo circunstancial y durará seguramente hasta Noviembre o Diciembre, por la necesidad de mover los productos para navidad. Se necesita mover los productos de Asia y China principalmente, a los distintos mercados para atender esta demanda. Eso se irá normalizando para inicios del próximo año. ¿Cómo ves a Hoja Verde en cinco años?

Nosotros vamos creciendo de una manera progresiva en el mercado, con la idea de mantener precios,

rentabilidad y eficiencia y poder crecer un diez por ciento cada año por los próximos cinco años. Tenemos la tierra, estamos consolidando operaciones, las compañías se están fusionando; espero que para finales de año ya seamos una sola compañía. Estamos haciendo un centro de distribución para las cuatro fincas y haciendo eficiencias para dar un mejor servicio al cliente.

Con el tiempo queremos enviar la carga ya paletizada, empezaremos con SKIDs y en el futuro esperamos paletizar toda la carga.

Interview: Eduardo Letort Manager of the Hoja Verde Group.

This group is made up of four farms, Hoja Verde, Flor Mare, Joygarden, and El Carmen, totaling 55 hectares of roses.

How has your work been since the pandemic started?

This started in mid-March of two thousand and twenty. Flowers are not a staple product, or so we thought. All the scenarios we tried out were negative, we wondered if this situation was going to last until May until Mother’s Day celebration, or even until September. We carried out the financial - economic runs to see how long we would last, and that is how we started putting together our strategy.

The first thing we did was put together a crisis team, with administrative, human talent, sales, cultivation, and technical personnel, with whom we met two or three times a week. In the financial part, we worked on the flows of suppliers and accounts receivable.

Luckily, we had a good Valentine’s Day, and we had already collected a large part of what was sold, with which we were economically quite stable, and this allowed that the decisions we made were not so hasty.

We decided to pinch some varieties on fifteen percent (15%) of the farm for the next three weeks, thinking that if that boosting is given for Mother’s Day and the market reactivates, we would be fine. If we saw that the market did not reactivate, we would pinch again and repeat the process. That’s what we did.

We never stopped selling. The United States did not close completely, we were able to hold twenty percent (20%) of the market, but Europe did close. In midApril, a part of the market was opened in Germany, and supermarkets in Switzerland were allowed to sell flowers for Mother’s Day celebration. At this time almost the entire European market was open, and

due to the good decisions made, we had a good flower peak for this celebration.

Another decision we made at the beginning of the pandemic was to work only seventy-five percent (75%) of the labor hours, that is, thirty hours a week; workers began to receive seventy-five percent (75%) of their salary. We always kept a record of the hours worked during those three months, to later recognize those hours to our workers and as per July, begin to pay them one hundred percent (100%) of labor hours, plus the twenty-five (25%) of April, May, June, so by October we were paying one hundred percent (100%) to all workers.

The wrong decisions of other farms such as to close blocks, cutting off the bushes to the base, staff layoffs, the non-renewal of varieties, and the fact that some farms were still suffering the negative consequences of the strike in October, and others were in expansion, resulted in a low flower supply for the market.

On the other hand, at no time did we stop renewing varieties. The crisis group worked sensationally. We did not layoff personnel, except those who were on probation and were less had less or up to 90 days on the job. In the administrative area, the layoff of two or three employees was negotiated, mainly because we were already in the process of merging the companies.

In fact, in the year two thousand and twenty (2020) the price trend was downward, we all lowered prices by three or four cents on average. At the end of the year, we only came out with a five percent (5%) difference in sales compared to the year two thousand and nineteen (2019). The profit in these two years was similar because we also reduced costs, lowered and cut down on all the areas that we could, and we became more efficient. This allowed us to somehow neutralize the impact of COVID. The most interesting thing about this pandemic is that flowers became a staple product, just as there is food for the body, there is food for the soul, and flowers became the nourishment that aided towards the emotional stability of many people.

What effect do you think the recent consolidation of large groups will have on the market?

There are five large groups in the country, of which the majority sell in the American mass market. I think that the impact on the market of these large groups will affect the market served by the Colombian flower more than that served by the Ecuadorian flower since almost eighty-five percent (85%) of Colombian sales are for supermarkets. Of these five groups, four are going to monopolize that American mass market.

Passion is going to be a global level player because it has crops in Africa, it has M&M, a trading company

in the Netherlands, and they are strong suppliers for England. Elit is also going to be a global level player within international markets.

There is another important player in the market so to say. These are the small producers, in Cayambe, to the north, with some three or four hundred new hectares, and those in the south (Lasso) with one hundred and fifty or two hundred new hectares. Postharvests have been installed that buy and process harvests of the small producers of Cayambe and the South, and with their own brands, they market this flower, especially for the Russian market.

I believe that there will be market niches for companies that are able to withstand the challenges that are coming and that are efficient.

What do you think of the issues regarding air cargo and the difficulties it is going through?

That is an issue that has become aggravated by the pandemic. Aggravated because the containers were left empty in many ports that closed. That is why much of the cargo is being transported by plane. The price of the containers has risen to fifteen thousand dollars ($ 15000). In this case, Ecuador is one of the least affected countries, thanks to bananas, which have the same route that comes and goes in containers.

That is why, in general, the cargo is affected because it costs almost the same to send by plane as it does by sea container. There are freights that pay more than flowers to move any type of product in the world. Even some large flower groups are chartering flights. I think it is something circumstantial and will surely last until November or December, due to the need of moving the products for Christmas. Products from Asia and China need to be moved mainly to different markets to meet this demand. This will start normalizing during the beginning of next year.

How do you see Green Leaf in five years?

We are progressively growing in the market, with the idea of maintaining prices, profitability, and efficiency and being able to grow ten percent each year for the next five years. We have the land, we are consolidating operations, the companies are merging. I hope that by the end of the year we will become one company.

We are building a distribution center for the four farms and working on efficiencies to provide a better customer service.

Over time we want to ship the cargo already palletized, we will start with SKIDs and in the future, we hope to palletize all the cargo.

Entrevista a Diego Espinosa Gerente de AGROCOEX

Cuéntanos como ha sido el trabajo de ustedes desde que entramos en la pandemia.

A finales de enero del 2020, vimos reducidas nuestras ventas a China debido a cancelaciones de pedidos y vuelos, sin embargo aun nos parecía un evento demasiado lejano para que nos afecte de manera mas directa. A finales de febrero se cerraron las ventas a Italia también…

Llego mediados de marzo del dos mil veinte, vimos ya una afectación directa en nuestra actividad por la pandemia. El gobierno ecuatoriano decretaba estados de emergencia, se prohibía la circulación normal, se limitó al trabajo esencial y se regulaban las actividades estratégicas que podrían trabajar, pero siempre con horarios muy limitados.

Por supuesto que esto generó mucha incertidumbre, el mundo entero se enfrentaba a una pandemia que no era posible parar. Se cerraban todas las actividades comerciales, vuelos de pasajeros, fronteras, etc.

El escenario era cien por ciento (100%) de incertidumbre, nos cuestionamos nuestra existencia en el mediano y largo plazo. En estas condiciones mundiales, ¿quién querría comprar flores? ¿Quién podría despacharlas con los vuelos cancelados de forma indefinida? Parecía el principio del fin…

Entonces nacieron nuestros aciertos, de manera franca y transparente decidimos algunas cosas: no nos declararíamos muertos antes de hora, si íbamos a cerrar lucharíamos todos juntos en la empresa hasta el ultimo día (socios, administradores y trabajadores) y finalmente los socios pondrían una nueva garantía para obtener un crédito que nos diera liquidez temporal (un tema muy arriesgado y generoso).

Mientras pasaban las semanas oímos que muchas empresas cerraban y liquidaban a sus trabajadores en medio de la emergencia.

Nuestro esfuerzo se vio recompensado, ya que siempre tuvimos ventas, aunque estas hayan sido menores a las habituales; además muy pronto, para el 7 de abril debíamos despachar 2 contenedores para el día de la madre. Este hecho fue un catalizador que nos enfocó para no apagar las turbinas y que nos obligó a volver al ritmo normal de trabajo. Nos preocupamos que los trabajadores tuvieran comida en sus casas para lo que entregamos víveres de forma extraordinaria.

Pronto aprendimos que aparte de cumplir ciertos horarios debíamos cuidar de forma preventiva la salud de los trabajadores con las normas mas importantes:

uso de mascarillas, lavado de manos y distanciamiento.

Nos adaptamos tanto como fue posible.

Pasaron los meses y nunca dejamos de trabajar y siempre fuimos capaces de vender.

Entonces entendimos que si había largo plazo y consecuentemente tomamos decisiones como el cambio de variedades e incluso crecimiento en área.

No cabe duda de que Dios nos bendijo, nadie podía saber que la lamentable pandemia iba a ser una oportunidad para la industria, en medio de mucho dolor, de muchas perdidas, -de fallecimientos que tenían nombre y apellidos cercanos-, el consumo de flores empezaba a incrementarse y solo aquellos que no habían cerrado o disminuido podrían tomar esta increíble alternativa de mejora.

Trascurrido el día la Madre 2020, pensamos que el mercado colapsaría, pero no fue así. Esto se repitió durante el verano 2020 y también en el otoño y el invierno 2021. Llego el Valentín 2021 y más allá del clima y los atrasos, fue muy positivo, de igual forma el día de la Madre 2021. Entonces si pensamos todos que el mercado se dañaría en el verano 2021 y nuevamente no fue así, la demanda crecía y este patrón no ha cambiado hasta hoy día (octubre 2021) fecha en la que ya empiezan los pinches del Valentín 2022….

Nadie sabe con certeza hasta cuando el mercado será generoso, pero si entendemos hoy día con mucha claridad que las decisiones que tomamos en plena incertidumbre (abril 2020) fueron acertadas. Quizás sea solo una coincidencia, -yo no lo creo así-, pero en este caso por pensar en todos los involucrados en la empresa logramos unos muy buenos resultados.

La pandemia fue terriblemente dolorosa para muchas personas y familias enteras y de manera paradójica una oportunidad no esperada para la industria.

en envíos de bouquets con valor agregado. Hemos fortalecido la relación con los clientes que mantuvimos durante todo este tiempo de crisis, ha crecido la relación que tenemos con nuestros colaboradores y nos hemos vuelto más eficientes.

Esperamos tomar un nicho de mercado que espera ser atendido por una relación muy personal que demuestre que conocemos a nuestros clientes y sus necesidades, pero sobre todo que le demostremos que le damos una prioridad que no todos los grupos son capaces de hacerlo.

Es evidente la falta de espacio de carga aérea, ¿cómo vienen afrontando este problema?

La única oportunidad que tenemos como empresa es despachar cada vez mas flor en contenedores vía marítima ya que el tema de espacios aéreos es muy complejo.

La solución debe venir de todos los productores, de la misma asociación. Yo concuerdo con el dicho que dice “ a grandes problemas grandes soluciones” y también con el que dice que “no podemos pretender cambios si seguimos haciendo las cosas de la misma manera”. ¿Qué ha generado el crecimiento de los grandes grupos productores y comercializadores en empresas como la suya?

Pienso que el crecimiento de estas empresas se debe a una visión de largo plazo que apenas muy pocas personas son capaces de concebir. Mientras la incertidumbre asecha y socaba la tranquilidad de muchas empresas, algunas muy prestigiosas incluso, estos grupos grandes miran una nueva oportunidad.

Para mí una gran visión, tema que respeto mucho.

Nosotros hemos crecido de forma orgánica y en la medida de nuestra capacidad real.

Este nuevo mapa de producción en Ecuador nos ha comprometido a mejorar cada día un poquito, queremos con el pasar de los días ser algo más eficientes, queremos ser especiales y distintos para nuestros clientes.

Es muy difícil competir en la economía de escala, es más fácil competir en la diferenciación y en la búsqueda de nichos.

Mas allá de los cielos abiertos, de las mejores tarifas y tratos impositivos, no entiendo cómo podemos competir con productos que pagan 13-15 $ / kg en el mundo. Yo pienso que debemos invertir en nuestros propios fletes aéreos, sea con leasing o incluso con la compra de aviones si fuera necesario. Debemos potenciar todos nuestros aeropuertos.

No conozco ningún precio más alto para un servicio que aquel que no existe. No hay tarifa más alta que podamos pagar que la de no poder despachar nuestras flores porque no tenemos como mandarlas.

Cómo vez tu negocio dentro de 5 años?

Veo una industria con un negocio mucho más competitivo y al nuestro basado exclusivamente en nuestras eficiencias diferenciadoras para competir.

Miro a nuestra empresa dos o tres veces más grande que ahora, con muchos más productos y con un enfoque de ventas de valor agregado. Miro el inicio de los siguientes 30 años de Agrocoex.

however, it still seemed too distant to us to affect us more directly. By the end of February sales to Italy were also closed.

Mid-March of two thousand and twenty arrived, we already saw a direct impact on our activity due to the pandemic. The Ecuadorian government issued a decree of emergency state. Normal circulation was prohibited, essential work became limited, and the strategic activities that could operate were regulated, but always with very limited hours.

Of course, this generated a lot of uncertainty, the whole world was facing a pandemic that could not be stopped. All commercial activities, passenger flights, borders, etc. were closed.

The scenario was one hundred percent (100%) uncertain. We questioned our existence in the medium and long term. In these world conditions, who would want to buy flowers? Who could dispatch them with flights canceled indefinitely? It seemed the beginning of the end.

Then the right answers started to come along. In a frank and transparent way, we decided on some things. We would not declare ourselves dead ahead of time, if we were to close, we would all fight together within the company until the last day (partners, administrators, and workers). Finally, the partners would put a new guarantee to obtain a loan that would give us temporary liquidity (a very risky and generous thing). As the weeks went by, we heard that many companies closed and arrange settlements with their laid-off workers in the middle of the emergency.

Our effort was rewarded since we always managed to have sales, although these have been less than usual. Also, in a short time, that is by April 7, we had to dispatch 2 containers for Mother’s Day. This fact was a catalyst that focused us on not turning off the turbines and that forced us to return to the normal rhythm of work. We worried that workers always had food in their homes for which we delivered food supplies as an extraordinary measure.

We soon learned that apart from meeting certain schedules, we had to put in place preventive measures for the health care of our workers with the most important norms due to the pandemic: use of masks, hand washing, and distancing. We adapted as much as we possibly could.

Months went by, we never stopped working, and we were always able to sell. So, we understood that the long term was a reality in our operation and consequently we made decisions such as the change of varieties and even growth in our production area.

There is no doubt that God blessed us. No one could know that the unfortunate pandemic was going to be

an opportunity for the industry, in the midst of much pain, many losses, -of deaths that held known names and surnames to us-, the consumption of flowers were starting to increase and only those who had not closed or decreased could take advantage of this incredible alternative for improvement.

After Mother’s Day 2020, we thought that the market would collapse, but it did not. This was repeated during the summer of 2020 and in the autumn and winter of 2021. Valentine’s Day 2021 arrived and beyond the weather and delays, it was very positive for us.

In the same manner, Mother’s Day 2021. So, if we all believed that the market would suffer damage during the summer of 2021, we were wrong, it was not like that once again. The demand was steadily growing, and this pattern has not changed until today (October 2021), the date on which the pinches for Valentine 2022 have already begun.

No one knows for sure how long the market will remain generous, but we do understand very clearly today that the decisions we made during full uncertainty (April 2020) were the correct ones. Perhaps it is just a coincidence, -I don’t think so-, but in this case, by thinking about everyone who is involved within the company, we were able to achieve very good results.

The pandemic has been terribly painful for many individuals and for entire families, but paradoxically, it has also been a rather unexpected opportunity for the industry.

What has generated the growth of large producer and marketer groups in companies like yours?

I believe that the growth of these companies is due to a long-term vision that only very few people are capable of conceiving. While uncertainty lurks and undermines the tranquility of many companies, some of them even very prestigious, these large groups are looking at a new opportunity. For me, it has been a matter of great vision, a subject that I respect a lot.

We have grown organically and to the extent of our real capacity.

This new production map in Ecuador has committed us to improve a little bit more every day. We want to become somewhat more efficient as the days go by, we want to be special and different for our customers.

It is very difficult to compete within the economy of scale, it is easier to compete in differentiation and in the search for niches.

Opportunities arise during crises. How have you taken advantage of them?

Our opportunity was born in the midst of the greatest uncertainty period of the pandemic.

At this point we have grown in our production area, we have diversified in products, and we have specialized in shipments of bouquets with added value. We have strengthened the relationships with our clients that we maintained throughout this time of crisis, the relationship we have with our collaborators has grown and we have become more efficient.

We hope to take a market niche that expects to be looked after through a very personal relationship, being able to evidence we know our clients and their needs, but above all that we show them that we give them a priority level that not all groups are able to deliver.

The lack of air cargo space is evident. How have you been tackling this problem?

The only opportunity we have as a company is to dispatch more and more flowers in containers by sea since the issue of air spaces is very a complex one at present.

The solution must come from all the producers, from the same association. I agree with the saying that

says “great problems, great solutions”, also with the one that says that “we cannot expect changes if we continue to do things in the same way.”

Beyond the open skies, the best rates, and tax deals, I do not understand how we can compete with products that pay $ 13 - 15 per kg in the world. I think that we should invest in our own air freights, either with leasing or even with the purchase of airplanes if necessary. We must boost all our airports.

I do not know of any higher price for a service than the one that does not exist. There is no higher tariff that we can pay than that of not being able to dispatch our flowers because we have no way of sending them.

How do you visualize your business in 5 years?

I see an industry with a much more competitive business, and our business, based exclusively on our differentiating efficiencies to compete. I look at our company two or three times bigger than it is now, with many more products, and a value-added sales approach. I am invisioning the beginning of the next 30 years of Agrocoex.

Entrevista a Carlos Proaño Gerente de Azaya Gardens

¿Cuéntanos cómo ha sido el trabajo de ustedes desde que entramos en pandemia?

Cuando inició el confinamiento, el 17 de marzo de 2020, en medio de un clima de total incertidumbre, adoptamos medidas para el funcionamiento de la empresa, tomando en cuenta los aspectos fundamentales del negocio y estableciendo prioridades.

Por ejemplo, decidimos mantener el presupuesto para control fitosanitario, reducir un 30% la fertilización, cumplir labores básicas de cultivo por turnos, a fin de que las plantas no sufran.

A los 15 días, de iniciado el confinamiento me reuní con el personal; era necesario brindarles tranquilidad, ya que, en las fincas florícolas se había iniciado un proceso de despidos intempestivos de los trabajadores. Les indiqué que Azaya Gardens no despediría a nadie y que de esta situación íbamos a salir juntos, esto fortaleció en ellos el compromiso con la empresa que ha sido primordial hasta hoy.

Durante las primeras semanas las ventas estuvieron prácticamente detenidas, posteriormente comenzamos a embarcar cantidades pequeñas a clientes con los que teníamos una estrecha relación comercial, lo que era una luz de esperanza para el negocio, hay que entender que en esos momentos se vivía en el mundo entero un ambiente de desconcierto.

Ventajosamente, conforme avanzaba el tiempo, el negocio se fue reactivando, nuestras labores en la finca se volvieron normales y extremando los cuidados de bioseguridad para el personal, logramos tener un número mínimo de contagios. ¿El crecimiento de los grandes grupos productores y comercializadores, qué ha generado en empresas como la de ustedes?

Pienso que es muy pronto para evaluar cuáles serán los efectos en el mercado internacional de flores con la oferta de estos grupos, en vista de que esta transición es reciente y parece estar consolidándose en este año.

Nosotros no hemos observado cambios con nuestros clientes actuales, el crecimiento de clientes nuevos es similar al de años anteriores, es por esta razón que no hemos sentido ninguna variación.

Además, entiendo que las empresas adquiridas por estos grupos continúan trabajando en condiciones normales, lo que no significa hasta el momento un aumento en la oferta de flor al mercado.

Sin embargo, a futuro es posible que estos grupos enfoquen su producción para satisfacer la demanda de supermercados y mayoristas, en este caso, se verían favorecidas empresas como la nuestra, debido a que los productos que ofrecemos están dirigidos hacia otros segmentos de mercado.

En las crisis se presentan oportunidades ¿Cómo las ha aprovechado?

Esta es una empresa que inició sus operaciones en un año difícil para la industria, en el año 2000, dos años después de la crisis financiera del 1998, también llamada crisis del Rublo en Rusia. En esa época el mercado de las flores estaba prácticamente caído, se reactiva a partir del 2002, siendo un tiempo perfecto para empezar con toda nuestra capacidad productiva de esa época.

Posterior a ello, atravesamos la crisis inmobiliaria del 2008, que también tuvo efectos en nuestro sector, seguida por la del año 2014, cuando ocurrió la baja del precio del petróleo y las sanciones financieras a Rusia, en esta ocasión, a pesar de las circunstancias, decidimos aumentar nuestra capacidad instalada de producción de flores.

La pandemia del 2020 no ha sido la excepción, estamos incrementando nuestra área sembrada con el objetivo de satisfacer la demanda de nuestros clientes.

Es evidente la falta de espacio de carga aérea. ¿Cómo vienen afrontando este problema?

Lamentablemente, esto está fuera de nuestro control, hemos conversado con clientes e inclusive ellos mencionan que no tienen la potestad para incrementar los cupos, a pesar de que negocian

con las agencias de carga, son las agencias quienes directamente tienen contacto con las aerolíneas y gestionan los espacios aéreos que no son suficientes.

Esto respondería a un cambio en el comportamiento de consumo de las personas después de la pandemia, que resulta en un crecimiento de la demanda de todo tipo de productos e insumos, sobrepasando la capacidad de transporte aéreo y marítimo en el mundo entero. ¿Cómo ves tu negocio dentro de 5 años?

Veo una empresa que sostiene el reconocimiento a nivel internacional por el cumplimiento de sus compromisos y por la consistencia en sus estándares de calidad, capaz de reaccionar rápidamente ante cambios en la demanda al introducir nuevos productos y renovar sus variedades cada año.

Una empresa que mantiene una cultura organizacional consolidada, que abarca colaboradores alineados y comprometidos con nuestros valores y clientes que se identifican y nos reconocen por ellos.

La visión que tengo del sector florícola es la de una industria regulada, con productores que cumplan con las normas ambientales y con los compromisos con sus trabajadores, además, con el pago de regalías y obligaciones tributarias, es decir, encontrarnos dentro de un medio con reglas similares para todos, de manera que los clientes puedan realizar un consumo responsable observando estas características al momento de elegir donde comprar.

During the first weeks, sales had practically stopped.

Later, we began to ship small quantities to clients with whom we had a close commercial relationship, which became a light of hope for the business. We must understand that at that time everybody was living within an environment of bewilderment in all the world.

Advantageously, as time progressed, the business was reactivated. Our work on the farm gradually became normal and by taking extreme care regarding biosecurity for the staff, we managed to have a minimum number of contagions.

What has the growth of large producer and seller groups generated in companies like yours?

I believe it is too early to assess what the effects will be upon the international flower market regarding the supply of these groups, given that this transition is recent and seems to be consolidating this year.

We have not observed changes with our current clients. The growth of new clients is similar to that of previous years, it is for this reason that we have not felt any variation.

In addition, I understand that the companies acquired by these groups continue to work under normal conditions, which so far does not mean an increase in the supply of flowers to the market.

However, in the future, it is possible that these groups focus their production in order to satisfy the demand of supermarkets and wholesalers. In this case, companies like ours would be favored because the products we offer are targeted towards other market segments.

Tell us how your work has been since we entered the pandemic?

In crises opportunities arise, how have these been taken advantage of?

When the confinement began, on March 17, 2020, in the midst of a climate of total uncertainty, we adopted measures for the operation of the company, taking into account the fundamental aspects of the business and establishing priorities.

For example, we decided to maintain the budget for phytosanitary control, reduce fertilization by 30%, carry out basic cultivation tasks in shifts, so that the plants do not suffer.

15 days after the confinement began, I met with the staff. It was necessary to provide them with peace of mind since a process of untimely dismissal of workers had begun in the flower farms. I told them that Azaya Gardens would not fire anyone and that we were going to get out of this situation together, this strengthened their commitment to the company, which has been paramount until today.

This is a company that began operations in a difficult year for the industry, in the year 2000, two years after the financial crisis of 1998, also called the Ruble crisis in Russia. At that time the flower market was almost at its lowest point. It reactivated as of 2002, being a perfect time to start with all our productive capacity at that time.

After that, we went through the real estate crisis of 2008, which also affected our sector, followed by that of 2014, when the oil price fell and the financial sanctions against Russia occurred. On this occasion, and despite the circumstances, we decided to increase our already installed flower production capacity.

The 2020 pandemic has not been the exception, we are increasing our planted area in order to meet the demand of our customers.

The lack of air cargo space is evident. How has the sector been dealing with this problem?

Unfortunately, this is out of our control. We have talked with clients, and they have even mentioned that they do not have the power to increase quotas, although they have tried to negotiate with the cargo agencies, it is the agencies who directly have contact with the airlines and manage the airspaces that are not able to satisfy the demand.

This would respond to a change in people’s consumption behavior after the pandemic, which results in a growth in demand for all kinds of products and supplies, exceeding the capacity of air and maritime transport in the entire world.

How do you see your business in 5 years?

I see a company that holds international recognition for the fulfillment of its commitments and for the

consistency in its quality standards, that it can react quickly to changes in demand, by introducing new products and renewing its varieties every year.

A company that maintains a consolidated organizational culture, which includes collaborators aligned and committed to our values and clients who identify and recognize us for them.

The vision I have of the floriculture sector is that of a regulated industry, with producers that comply with environmental standards and with commitments to their workers. In addition, with the payment of royalties and tax obligations, that is, to find ourselves within an environment with similar rules for everyone, so that customers can carry out a responsible consumption by observing these characteristics when choosing where to buy.

¿Qué está pasando con los fletes aéreos?

Juan Simón Bustamante Gerente de Flowercargo

Los fletes aéreos escasos y caros se deben en parte al problema, provocado por la pandemia del coronavirus; un aumento de la demanda de materias primas en todo el mundo con el consecuente colapso del mercado logístico tanto marítimo como aéreo.

Por otro lado, hay también un incremento en la demanda de flores y eso ha provocado el alza de tarifas. Las causas principales que han incidido en el problema de los fletes aéreos podríamos resumirlas así: 1.- El represamiento de carga de muchas materias primas ha hecho colapsar el sistema logístico mundial, haciendo que ciertos productos que tradicionalmente se envían por vía marítima, se pasen al transporte aéreo.

2.- La disminución considerable de vuelos de pasajeros que llevaban carga en las panzas (baylis), porque al no estar el mercado aéreo de pasajeros rehabilitado al cien por ciento (100 %), todo ese espacio de carga pasó a ocupar el espacio de los aviones cargueros. Hay una demanda gigante de aviones cargueros en todo el mundo, presionando sobre la oferta y la demanda de las tarifas.

3.- El alza del precio del petróleo es otro de los elementos que aporta para este incremento.

Hemos tenido aumentos de tarifas en los últimos meses, en tarifas regulares entre el veinte (20%) y treinta (30%) tal vez más en algunos casos y probablemente tarifas sobre el cien por ciento (100%) en vuelos charters que se han tenido que contratar para cumplir con la demanda.

Sumemos a estos elementos enumerados el hecho de que hay dos aerolíneas que están en proceso de quiebra, y otras han entrado en crisis, lo cual también ha reducido la oferta.

Esperemos que progresivamente los vuelos de pasajeros se vayan incorporando, y que la flota disponible para la región vaya creciendo durante los próximos meses. Es de esperar que ingrese flota nueva por parte de algunas aerolíneas, pero no es un tema que va a solucionarse en el corto plazo. De aquí, hasta los primeros meses del próximo año, cuando haya una demanda importante por Valentín, Día de la mujer y Madres, seguramente vamos a tener el problema de una alta demanda y una oferta restringida. Esperamos que la situación algo mejore a

partir del verano del 2022.

Hemos juntado esfuerzos con Expoflores, los productores, las agencias de carga, las aerolíneas, buscando alternativas. Quito es una estación importante en el mercado aéreo logístico, de manera que hemos hecho muchas reuniones, se han contratado vuelos charters y algunas aerolíneas han logrado poner espacios de forma estructural, es decir, vuelos semanales, con tarifas diferenciadas. Así se ha paliado en algo la situación.

Hay algunas aerolíneas que están intentando incorporar más oferta, no es fácil porque hay mucha competencia de todas las estaciones del mundo, pero se han incorporado algunos aviones adicionales de manera semanal y otros eventuales. En meses pasados cuando el problema ha explotado porque nos hemos quedado con cien (100) o doscientas toneladas (200) fuera, hemos tenido que salir rápidamente al mercado a buscar alternativas, obviamente a precios elevados para poder competir con otras estaciones que tienen tarifas más altas; entonces se ha trabajado en conjunto, se han hecho reuniones con otros participantes del mercado como autoridades del aeropuerto, gobierno y ministerio, para ver de qué manera podemos ayudar para que venga mayor oferta aérea a esta estación.

Luego hay otros temas más de fondo como el impuesto a la salida de divisas, (ISD) sobre el cual algo se ha trabajado; el tema del incremento en los combustibles; el tema de cielos abiertos, que son temas de largo plazo pero que lógicamente deben tratarse para lograr más oferta de espacios y más aviones.

En teoría el sector público está dispuesto, pero su acción es engorrosa y lenta por las trabas legales pues no camina al mismo ritmo que los acuerdos entre

privados.

Aparte de haberse recuperado los volúmenes antes de la pandemia, hoy existe una demanda adicional, que ha implicado un crecimiento del hectareaje. Hay muchas fincas que están creciendo y otras pequeñas que están apareciendo; suman volumen y tienen que salir a algún mercado.

Hay un crecimiento, pero se ve limitado por el tema de logística y espacio aéreo; sin embargo, los esfuerzos que se han hecho entre todos los participantes de la cadena logística han hecho que no se haya botado flor.

¿Qué está pasando con los fletes aéreos?

The considerable decrease in passenger flights that carried cargo in the belly (baylis), because since the passenger air market was not rehabilitated one hundred percent (100%), all that cargo space was moved to occupy the space in cargo planes. Lo que no se ha podido evitar es el retraso en el despacho de flor; hay vuelos que salen uno, dos o tres días más tarde de lo previsto, y esto genera incertidumbre tanto en el comprador, que hace su compra FOB Quito y contrata el servicio aéreo, cómo en el importador, el mayorista o wholesaler y lógicamente en el productor que se ve limitado por el espacio y por los retrasos. Por lo tanto, todos los actores de la cadena logística están sujetos a un constante stress que en parte se ha logrado manejar con vuelos adicionales y vuelos charteados.

Después del día de la Madre, a partir de Junio, empezado el verano, debería haber nueva oferta, que en teoría ayudaría a solventar el problema; pero claro eso depende de muchos factores.

We hope that passenger flights will gradually be reincorporated and that the fleet available for the region will grow steadily in the coming months. It is expected that a new fleet will enter from some airlines, but it is not an issue that will be solved in the short term.

From here, until the first months of next year, when a significant demand for Valentine’s Day, Women’s Day, and Mothers arises, we will surely then have the problem of high demand and restricted supply. We hope that the situation will improve somewhat as of summer 2022.

No es fácil, como lo están haciendo algunas compañías aéreas, convertir un avión de pasajeros en uno de carga, dada la alta demanda; pues requieren de nuevos permisos, controles de seguridad, etc, que dificultan cumplir con los tiempos previstos.

Esperemos que otros actores se reincorporen, que algunos de los que dejaron el mercado aéreo, puedan volver y que se abra la posibilidad de volar desde Ecuador, en un futuro cercano.

Then there are other more substantive issues such as the foreign currency outflow tax (ISD) on which something has been worked; the issue of the increase in fuels; the issue of open skies, which are long-term issues but that should be logically addressed in order to achieve more space offer and more aircrafts.

In theory, the public sector is willing, but its action is cumbersome and slow due to legal obstacles since it does not move at the same pace as the agreements between private companies.

Apart from having recovered the volumes we had before the pandemic, today there is an additional demand, which has implied an increase in hectares.

There are many farms that are growing and other small ones that are appearing; they add volume and have to go out some market.

There is a certain growth, but it is limited by the issue of logistics and airspace. However, the efforts that have been made by all the participants within the logistics chain have meant that no flowers have been thrown away.

What could not be avoided is the delay in the dispatch of the flowers. There are flights that depart one, two, or three days later than expected, and this generates uncertainty both for the buyer, who makes his purchase FOB Quito and hires the air service, as for the importer, the distributor or wholesaler and, logically, for the producer who is limited by space and by the delays. Therefore, all the actors within the logistics chain are subject to constant stress that has been managed in part with additional flights and chartered flights.

After Mother’s Day, as of June, is the beginning of summer. There should be a new offer, which in theory would help solve the problem, but of course that depends on many factors.

It is not easy, as some airlines are doing, to convert a passenger aircraft into a cargo one, given the high demand, since they require new permits, security controls, etc., which makes it difficult to meet the scheduled times.

Let’s hope that other actors will rejoin, that some of those who left the air market can return, and that the possibility of flying from Ecuador opens up in the near future.
