sreya iyer As an artist, I love looking for the extraordinary in the mundane. I love to test the potential of my creativity, and will often challenge myself by using a wide variety of mediums. I work mostly with paint, specifically acrylic and gouache, but have recently branched out to digital illustration. I enjoy the creative process, especially because of the trial and error that comes with choosing the perfect color scheme, composition, and so much more.

Art has always been a huge part of my life, and my passion for it extends into the way I view the world. I am always on the lookout for inspiration, and will often be found in the most unexpected places. I love to showcase my artistic journey through social media platforms such as Tiktok and Instagram, where I am able to engage with a larger audience of artists. Art is an integral part of my life, and its what makes my journey on this earth so beautiful :)

on art & how it helps

DT: So, when did you first start making art, and why?

SS: I started around a year ago. I was drawing in a journal that I'm making for my best friend. I don't know why I started, I was just scrolling on Pinterest and I thought I would recreate some things I saw there. My mom also does art, so I felt inspired in that regard.

DT: How has art changed the way you view the world?

SS: I really like drawing people, especially people I know in real life. It helps me learn their features and in a way get closer to them because I'm studying their faces for so long in order to get the drawing as accurate as possible. It really makes me see them in a new, more profound way because of it, and now whenever I look at a person, I see their faces and appreciate their beauty in different and better ways.

DT: I know that art has helped with your mental health a lot, do you want to talk about that a little bit?

SS: Yeah, I think art has kind of been like an escape for me. I get really overwhelmed and anxious, so I just do art and focus on the details. I draw faces a lot and focus on how to make them look like the person I'm drawing and how to make them look realistic so much so that it takes my focus off of whatever is overwhelming me and whatever I'm being anxious about and onto the drawing that I'm making and onto making it as accurate as possible. It's a distraction from anything I'm dealing with. I'm very very passionate about the art that I make and it's really something that I put a lot of time and energy into so making it really distracts me and makes me feel good.

Today when I was driving home from work, I had this overwhelming sense of emptiness and the feeling that I was not myself. I felt like I was 18, 62, and 13, all at once.

When I have the fortune of feeling that emptiness, I realize just how still time is. I saw a small baby's shoe abandoned in the Teapioca parking lot, and compared to my big, old, weathered shoes, it reminded me of just that. I am going to die and I am going to be born, and regardless of how linear time feels, it is anything but. I don't like to act like my feelings are insignificant simply because we are a millisecond in this enormous timeline, but sometimes it's nice to think that all this gorgeous pain is just a blip. And I can ignore it to feel how strange it is to just be.

for ezequiel, photography comes more naturally than other mediums, because when he visualizes a composition in his head, he is able to capture them exactly as they are, without having to use drawing to get his ideas across.

madison shanhanan's review of SXSW: a huge music and film festival that rolls through austin every year in the springtime.

Each year as spring rolls around, the planning and anticipation for South by South West consumes me entirely.

I mostly partake in music events, but the artistic, technological, and cultural aspects of SXSW are hard to miss. Locals tend to avoid the crowds and the traffic that follow this huge event, but I embrace it completely. There's nothing better than driving up and down Congress in search of free parking to use to attend a show. Each year I have attended, I have been badgeless and underage. Although the presumed possibility for someone like me to attend events seems limited, I still go and enjoy many events, and I'm proud to say that all the shows I have visited through SXSW have been completely free. Events like South by San Jose, Outdoor Shows on Lady Bird Lake, and The Yeti Music Showcase, as well as venues-such as Antones and Empire-offer endless free music events. I have a great deal of fun and embrace all kinds of music with all kinds of people that I wouldn’t have been able to encounter without SXSW. Artists like The Heavy Heavy, Free Range, and Why Bonnie were nowhere on my radar before seeing them on SXSW lineups, and they have now become some of my absolute favorites.

SXSW is a week of togetherness, discovery, and spontaneity that is solely driven by the purpose of exposure and I encourage anyone and everyone to embrace it completely next spring!
