News hits, feel no pain W

KERITH GABRIEL

hat a week in news. Bucks County became the epicenter for the next great “American Crime Story, the dastardly health care bill was still so dastardly that it still made even the most conservatives say, “hell no, and a white woman in Minnesota got shot for no apparent reason. Hell, cockroaches even attempted to invade Bridesburg. When you work in this business, something really sad happens: you lose emotion. You lose any sense of feeling sorry and instead rationalize everything as if justifying it can allow you to make sense (or at least attempt to make sense) of it all, process it and move onto the next heinous piece of news that’s sure to come across your news feed. Take the Bucks County shootings for instance. It’s absolutely terrible for the families and friends to have to live without their loved ones and no one should ever have to see their young lives come to an end in the manner those four boys suffered at the hands of a fucking psycho. However, the rational side of me says they wouldn’t be in that situation if they weren’t allegedly on their way to buy mass quantities of marijuana from said psycho. You don’t even need to take drugs to know that drug deals are dice throw situations, you don’t know what you’re walking into. Sometimes it’s a score, sometimes – and in the case of these four – it’s being on the unfortunate end of a gun barrel. Justine Ruszczyk, the woman shot by the Minnesota cop after calling 911 is an absolute unspeakable tragedy. She suspects a sexual assault and calls police. 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

Doing her civic duty as a citizen. What does she get for her trouble? A bullet to the abdomen. A story that’s become international news and at the time I pen this piece still remained a mystery as to what went down that made Ofc. Mohamed Noor pull out his service weapon and kill this woman. Rational side? She joins a growing list of people in America who are senselessly gunned down by those who are supposed to protect, proving perhaps that police shootings aren’t exclusive to people of color. I actually hope her death becomes the ďŹ nal piece of icing on an already layered cake that we need more stringent mandates for our police ofďŹ cers. To be honest, most cops generally show up looking like they just won a fucking Strongman competition. Why is the last resort on their belt always seemingly the ďŹ rst? Looking at Ruszczyk, if this ofďŹ cer truly felt she wasn’t being compliant wouldn’t mace or a Tazer have done the trick? Again, the whole story isn’t out, but that’s my takeaway in a tragedy we’re hearing about on a daily basis. What still gets me ďŹ red up are stories like the Overbrook man charged with killing his 2-year-old son or the dog in Georgia that died after it was discovered buried alive on a trail; it’s body ravaged by heat and insects that fed on it until it was discovered. Two instances of true innocence that can’t be rationalized, that can’t be justiďŹ ed. Just a pair of cases where a truly sick individual held domain over something that depends on it for survival. I don’t think I’ll ever see the sad side of tragedy. I’ll recognize it, I’ll sympathize, but my ďŹ rst instinct will always be to digest by justifying and simply move on. I know I’m not the only person who feels this way given we are all inundated via TV, radio, social media and those little boxes in our pockets that have taken control of our daily lives. Now that I think of it, maybe that’s truly the sad part. Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR -8/<

League of Extraordinarily Rich Women Names are tricky. Sometimes a thing has a very nice name, and then a not very nice thing comes along and ruins it for everyone else. If you’re curious how this works, look at how hundreds of well-meaning, nonterroristic companies named “Isis have been faring in the last few years. And lo, as a Philadelphia Magazine writer pointed out on Twitter, our very own Union League has something called the “One Percenters Club. In a city where one in four people live below the poverty line, the name might smack of WTF-ness. But apparently the club is for the Union League’s women. The name hearkens back to a time in which female club members actually made up just one percent of the club. Q

His title now reads plain-old “meteorologist, according to the network’s website, and the chief title now belongs to Tammie Souza. But the move is not a demotion! An NBC10 spokesperson explained to Philly.com that Souza is taking over the 11 p.m. weather slot, which is apparently reserved for that title, but Schwartz will continue to provide forecasts earlier in the day. 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

We leave you with this‌ Since we’re on the topic of pests this week, it might be timely to share this letter to the editor we received this week. We can’t decide if it holds validity or is just a rant, so read and decide. Enjoy. What bed bugs taught us about the Free Library It's never a good sign when city officials refuse to answer direct questions. A couple of years ago, NBC10 news reported on a bedbug issue at various Free Library locations. The bed bugs were found in books and other materials. As a result, both the Northeast Regional location on Cottman and the Holmesburg branch on Frankford were closed. According to NBC10, "Library officials wouldn't disclose all of the locations the pests have popped up, but say there have been at least ten incidents in the last six months." Were bed bugs present at ten different locations? Furthermore, “The libraries have been keeping the problem quiet for fear patrons will be afraid to visit. In fact, the sign on the door of the Holmesburg branch Thursday said the closure was due to an emergency.â€?

$133,573

Yet nearly two years prior to the Free Library bed bug issue of December 2015, CBS3 was informed by Sandy Horrocks, a library executive, that bed bugs are “notâ€? a problem at “anyâ€? of the Free Library’s 54 locations. Accuracy and transparency are the first steps in both prevention and control of bed bugs. According to Ron Harrison, Orkin entomologist and director of technical services‌â€?They're also good travelers, often latching onto luggage, purses, and other items during travel.â€? Bedbug infestations can spread rapidly and they aren't truly nocturnal, they're considered by professionals to be more of an opportunist. If you stay up all night, they will come out and feed on you during the day. Some people have severe allergic reactions to the bedbug bites. All one has to do is perform a quick search on YouTube to see it for themselves. According to Scientific American, in colder climates bed bugs may live up to a year without feeding. It would appear the Free Library is more concerned about protecting a brand than the health and safety of its patrons. Quite the corporate cut-throat move considering the Free Library is a non-profit organization.

Where’s the integrity? Because, there was a good reason why the city formed a Philadelphia Bed Bug Task Force. Could someone at the Free Library just be honest with taxpayers? It's not just a bad optic, this is point-blank wrong. You can't defend the indefensible. The Free Library is supposed to set a good example for children. This is not the way we go about elevating the American consciousness. Q

– JASON KAYE, PHILADELPHIA

That’s how much the city spent on pest control this past fiscal year across all of its buildings. However, they may want to consider going with a new extermination company. A July 12 Philly.com report depicted the problem as being worse than it’s ever been with mice running rampant and bed bugs still being discovered inside many City Hall offices. 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

This panhandler walks dejectedly after getting no takers on what’s jokingly called the walk of shame.

Sparing some change A deeply personal look at the panhandling situation in Philadelphia BY ALEX VUOCOLO

G

eorge Roscoe and Linda Smith lean against a wheelchair access ramp outside Mariposa Food Co-op, a grocery store located inside a former bank on Baltimore Avenue in West Philadelphia. The June “Dollar Strollâ€? is underway, and vendors line the sidewalk selling $1 cups of beer, grilled corn, and barbeque chicken. As dollar bills change hands up and down the avenue, Roscoe, 64, and Smith, 54, take turns asking for a small donation of money or food. Some give a crumpled bill or a handful of change. Others offer to go inside to buy them something from the co-op. Overall, the yield is good. By the end of the evening, the couple munch on barbeque chicken and dance along to a passing drumline. Roscoe and Smith panhandle all over Philadelphia, but their preferred spot is right here on Baltimore Avenue. They say it has the right mix of foot trafďŹ c, access to food, and people willing to help. Roscoe, who says he panhandles to support his partner, doesn’t hesitate to generalize about the neighborhood’s character. -8/<

A fitting message along a stretch of Callowhill Street known for panhandling. “It’s not in the ghetto, he says. “People love you more. A handful of regulars outside the co-op agree the curved, treelined corridor is prime real estate for panhandling. “I don’t panhandle anywhere but here, says David Harrington, 33, who started asking strangers for help last October after dropping out of the workforce due to an injury. “For me,

it’s better that I stay in a safe place to panhandle, because there are certain areas where people look down at you or persecute you.â€? Harrington’s decision to stick to Baltimore Avenue is based on hard-earned experience — bad encounters everywhere from 7-Eleven parking lots on Broad Street to busy intersections in Center City. It’s also simple economics. Customers on the increasingly gentriďŹ ed commercial strip are willing and able to give. “Right here I can make more money because I have a lot of customers,â€? says Tony Coleman, 59, an off-and-on panhandler for the last decade. “People downtown act like they got nothing to give me, no money or nothing.â€? Unlike in Center City, where both pedestrians and panhandlers are more transient, the same faces turn up again and again on Baltimore Avenue. People like Omar Lahayne, a well-known homeless man who recently committed suicide, become neighborhood ďŹ xtures, albeit controversial ones. Certain hotspots, such as outside Mariposa or the intersection of 45th and Baltimore four blocks east, attract a rotating cast of ďŹ ve or six of the same people. Propping up this secondary economy are the avenue’s many businesses. They provide the foot trafďŹ c necessary to make panhandling worthwhile, yet they often stand to lose the most from its presence. Many shop owners worry customers will turn away if they feel harassed or endangered. For some, it can feel like a stark choice between cracking down or ďŹ guring out how to coexist — a word plastered on the back of more than a few fuel-efďŹ cient cars here on University City’s grungy fringe. Baltimore Avenue is home to a socialist bookstore, an anarchist community center, an alternative media non-proďŹ t, and a member-owned food co-op. Black Lives Matter signs hang in a number of storefronts. On this street, kicking a panhandler to the curb or calling the cops isn’t always a popular move. “I think part of being a good neighbor means trying to provide a safe and welcoming space, and that is part of how we try to approach folks who are panhandling in front of the store,â€? says Bull Gervasi, facilities and produce department coordinator for Mariposa. “In all we do, we try to take a compassionate approach.â€? Striking that balance can be difďŹ cult. In the day-to-day negotiations between the avenue’s businesses and those who make 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

a living just outside of them, good intentions can get tangled up in broader social challenges.

force the legal buffer around the store. Outside Mariposa, by comparison, a simpler routine plays almost out every day: get up when they ask, come back when they’re gone. “They know me. I know them, he says. “We have a rapport.

Neighborhood business Adiarra “Adjaâ€? Sangali, owner of Adja International Boutique and Grocery at 45th and Baltimore, says she hesitates to confront the people who hang out on the stairs leading up to her storefront. She fears they might retaliate. “They can break the window if they’re mad,â€? says Sangali, who has owned her business for 15 years. “I don’t want any problems.â€? Sangali says she knows many of those who loiter are dealing with serious mental health issues. (One woman in particular sometimes curses violently at her.) But she mainly worries about the smell turning away customers. “When they come, they sit in front of my door and I don’t like it because they stinking,â€? she says. Her solution: douse the steps in bleach. Panhandling, mental health issues and homelessness often intertwine as business owners deal with very different individuals. Some come from nearby homeless shelters, while others may be picking up extra money between jobs. There is also a vast space in between, where degrees of alcoholism, drug abuse and mental health problems avoid easy deďŹ nition. That doesn’t change the basic priorities of a neighborhood business. “We wouldn’t tolerate anybody yelling at another customer,â€? says Annie BaumStein, owner of Milk & Honey, a coffee shop and casual restaurant at 44th and Baltimore. “We wouldn’t tolerate anybody stealing, or anybody destroying our bathroom.â€? Baum-Stein says she has called the police numerous times, but only in cases of violent behavior, theft or vandalism. “For lack of a better explanation, we’ve deďŹ nitely sort of chased people away,â€? she says. “We’ve said you can’t stand here, you can’t solicit our customers as they walk in, you can’t hang out here.â€? She adds the issue is further complicated by the fact some customers have spoken out about how the shop responds to panhandlers. “We even got a letter once,â€? she says, in which a customer accused the staff of being discriminatory and insensitive. The Philadelphia Code, for its part, prohibits panhandling within eight feet of a 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

Exactly when panhandling became a noticeable issue on the avenue is up for debate. Baum-Stein says it’s been nearly constant since she opened her business in 2009. Sangali has also dealt with it for several years. Neighbors a little farther west, closer to Mariposa, say it’s picked up steam in the last two years. Quan Blanche, owner of Reclaim Print, a custom print shop next door to Mariposa, says the panhandlers arrived when the surrounding neighborhoods began to change. “The panhandling came when the gentriďŹ cation came,â€? he says. “Anybody with sense can see the neighborhood is changing and people are coming over here because there’s money.â€? Blanche opened his shop about a decade ago and says panhandling hasn’t been an issue for him personally. “It’s not really as much of a problem for me and my folks because it’s concentrated in front of the co-op,â€? he says. Holloman says the increased density that comes with gentriďŹ cation also plays a role. Areas that formerly had low foot trafďŹ c are suddenly booming. “If you’re making 50-60 bucks a day and you know there’s people who are going to give it to you, you’re highly unlikely to leave those particular areas,â€? he says. The Baltimore Avenue Business Association only recently made the issue a priority. Members of the group, which promotes businesses between 40th and 52nd streets, have begun talks to come up with a coordinated response. (Mariposa and Milk & Honey both belong to the association.) The effort will likely include some combination of outreach to nearby shelters and a public awareness campaign. “We have been grappling with how to best handle the issue in a sensitive way,â€? says Algernong Allen, an association member and owner of GBLS LLC, a real estate investment and management ďŹ rm. The campaign could follow the lead of a citywide initiative announced in June -8/<

to discourage giving to panhandlers. The “text-to-giveâ€? campaign, led by the OfďŹ ce of Supportive Housing, encourages people to donate via text to an established homeless services program. “I will admit myself that I have given people money in the past, if someone looks that down and out,â€? Mayor Kenney told reporters at a June news conference in City Hall. “But you have to understand it’s not going to help solve their ultimate problem. It will address an immediate problem of either hunger or drug addiction, but it’s not going to solve the problem at large.â€? According to Baum-Stein, a member of the board, the business group is looking into running its own campaign to discourage giving. Yet preventing shoppers from sparing their change could be an especially hard task on Baltimore Avenue. “There are a lot of very compassionate people who shop at our stores,â€? Gervasi says. On a recent afternoon, Tony Coleman picked up several donations in a 15-minute period. The soon-to-be donors often talked cordially with Coleman, handed him some money, and then shook his hand before heading off. More than half the people he asked gave him something. One of them, Emily Weiss, who lives above the avenue, says she gives because she wants to set a good example for her kids. But she understands the connection between giving and the uptick in panhandling. “I’ve been wondering how Mariposa feels about it, because a lot of time I actually do ďŹ nd it very frustrating and I do wish that they weren’t there and that I

wasn’t faced with this moral dilemma every time I go shopping,â€? she says. “I think I would rather there be a policy that we not encourage people to give money.â€? In other words, she’d like to see some kind of humane and comprehensive effort to help panhandlers before she stops helping them herself. Other residents and business owners echo her sentiment, but achieving this goes far beyond what any one citizen is capable of. “I would suggest calling the homeless outreach teams,â€? says Owen Camuso, program manager at Resources for Human Development, a national non-proďŹ t that operates a shelter on 49th and Baltimore. NonproďŹ ts contracted by the city send teams out to build relationships with homeless people to direct them to services that could help, whether that’s a shelter or a drug treatment center. Camuso adds they can’t reach everybody — especially those panhandlers who aren’t necessarily homeless. Furthermore, no single agency or organization can solve the problem. “I think in the City of Philadelphia, we need a really coordinated effort,â€? he says. “It’s not just the homeless service providers. It’s not just the police. It’s not just the business corridors.â€? On one hot June afternoon, Harrington once again leans against the facade of Mariposa. As people pass by to enter the store, he quietly asks for some spare change. He holds a copy of James Clavell’s epic samurai novel “Shogunâ€? on his lap. He says the book reminds him that the same thing matters wherever you go. “For me, it’s about respect,â€? he says. “Everything in this city is about respect.â€? The concept of kink can seem shrewd to conservative types, but there’s actually proof this type of sex can have advantages to one’s mental health.

No pain, no sexual gain Are there truly therapeutic advantages to a little BDSM in the bedroom? BY TIMAREE SCHMIT

H

ave you ever been in the middle of a heated kiss and bit your lover’s lip? How about incorporating a blindfold, handcuffs or spanking into your sexual experiences? If so, you’ve engaged in BDSM, even if it was very lightly. And if these ideas sound remotely intriguing, you might consider further exploration, because it might actually be good for you to be kinky. The concept of kink refers to exploration of sexuality, anything that pushes the boundaries beyond the mechanical acts of intercourse. It’s about looking for creative, expansive ways to ďŹ nd pleasure and eroticism. Some popular examples of kink are BDSM and S&M, which are practices that speciďŹ cally involve: bondage, discipline, domination, submission, or sadism and masochism. And not only are these practices incredibly erotically satisfying to some people, they have therapeutic beneďŹ ts. Directly, BDSM practices can reduce anxiety and stress. Not only did a 2014 study presented at an annual conference for the Society for Personality and Social Psychology annual conference compare the endorphin response to that of a run3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

ner’s high, but an experiment at Northern Illinois University seemed to indicate that this intentional pain can lead to the kind of peacefulness associated with meditation. Experiencing pain can change blood ow in the brain, temporarily taking away from attention and working memory, sending a person into an altered state, commonly known as “subspace.â€? After BDSM experiences, many people also experience a drop in levels of cortisol, a chemical related to stress. In addition to the immediate effects, folks who practice consensual BDSM often have better measures of mental health. A 2013 study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found they have lower neuroticism, are more secure in their relationships, are better equipped to handle rejection, and have better overall well-being. Some of that can be attributed to the acts themselves, but perhaps, more importantly: the communication and trust required between partners. Much like non-monogamy, BDSM steps outside of the parameters of conventional sexuality. Rather than focusing on what people usually or “shouldâ€? do, these practices invite individuals to examine their desires and speak openly about

them to partners. For these things to function well, it requires introspection and talking...a lot of talking. Even for those folks who have no interest in polyamory or BDSM, there is still a lot to be learned from those communities and the habits that serve them. For all its potential beneďŹ ts, BDSM is not a panacea. “A mistake quite a few people make is replacing therapy with BDSM entirely,â€? says Goddess Thain, a professional dominatrix. She says many kinky people may avoid seeing a counselor because very few therapists are equipped to talk competently about BDSM, or queer or polyamorous issues for that matter. A patient may tell a therapist about their enjoyment of being tied up and beaten and be told that behavior is inherently unhealthy. In fact, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual used by mental health professionals to diagnose mental illness still includes many BDSM practices. It’s worth noting the DSM also used to include a diagnosis for homosexuality, and there is a directory of kink-aware mental health professionals available at kinkawareprofessionals.com “BDSM can be therapeutic, via catharsis and controlled releases of endorphins, but it works best in conjunction with therapy, not as a replacement for it,â€? Thain continues, “Otherwise, it can become a very shiny Band Aid - sometimes your issues will heal on their own, oftentimes they may need more help than that.â€? If someone wants to launch into the world of BDSM, where do they start? Here in Philly, Sexploratorium (317 South St.) and Kink Shoppe (126 Market St.) offer regular workshops on everything from bondage to riding crops and wax play. Goddess Thain holds a weekly educational event at William Way LGBT Community Center called Thursdays with Thain and can be hired for personal consulting. She’ll also be doing a live demo at the upcoming episode of Sex with Timaree this author is hosting as part of the ďŹ fth annual Philadelphia Podcast Festival. Q To learn more about Goddess Thain, visit: thursdayswiththain.com and GoddessThain.com. However, it was the least disturbing bit to spur a weekend rally on July 15 here in Philadelphia, one of many protests around the country at the same time spearheaded by left-wing group RefuseFascism.org. Those on hand at the Philly installment voiced concerns that the attention on the White House’s collusion with Russia could actually distract from more pressing and urgent issues. The march went to several key locations in the city to point out problems with the presidency. ot to bust on the fantastic – but the anonymous, cartoon element of Gorillaz has always been this project’s least fascinating identiďŹ er for this writer. The experimental Brit act created by singer/musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett features a run of ďŹ ctitious band names and spiky illustrations are cute as a gimmick or for a video. Yet, nothing beats the live Gorillaz, a more traditional esh-and-blood rock band model as opposed to the cartoon likes of 2-D, Murdoc Noodle and Russel Hobbs that fans have long come to know and love. This hearty punk-electro and raving, dancehall-hop of Albarn & Co. took the stage of Festival Pier last week and pierced the rainy evening’s air with crack3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

ling electric reggae funk – weirdness. From its ďŹ rst live note (the throbbing medley of “M1 A1,â€? “I Switched My Robot Offâ€? and “Ascensionâ€?) to its last (the dramatically stammering dancehall of “Clint Eastwoodâ€? into the wifty “Demon Daysâ€?) Gorillaz was rousing in a way that made your hair stand on end. Appreciating Damon Albarn as an aesthete who always goes beyond the pale – be it the contagious art pop of Blur, the dour ragga-punk of The Good, The Bad and The Queen, or his operatic solo work – was essential to digging Gorillaz. The band’s ringleader, singer and multiinstrumentalist, Albarn manically paced the stage while crooning the lonesome Bowie-ish ballad “Busted and Blue,â€? the uplifting epic “Andromeda,â€? the soulful samba “Last Living Souls,â€? and the squelchy funk of “Dareâ€? in a dry, deadpan voice.

That’s truly Gorillaz true signature, beyond the Mad Max-ish cartoons. Yet, bringing oddly incompatible rappers and vocalists into Gorillaz is also a huge part of its merry madness. That’s something Albarn’s done on albums (e.g. Lou Reed, Carly Simon, Grace Jones, De La Soul), as well as in an onstage setting with last Thursday night’s crew including vocalists Peven Everett and Kilo Kish. Additionally, there’s also house music god Jamie Principle (“Sex Murder Partyâ€?), and Albarn’s equally droll rapping pal, Vince Staples. Staples was an unofďŹ cial hero of the night as he acted as the evening’s unannounced opener. Staples whipped his way through the nasal, theatrical quirk of pulsating absurdist tracks such as the noodling synth-hop of “BagBak,â€? “745,â€? and “Lemme Know.â€? It was, however, “Norf, Norfâ€? – and its timely, relevant call-to-arms that served as Staples’ shining moment. “I ain’t never ran from nothin’ but the police; from the city where the skinny carry strong heat.â€? SAVAGE LOVE:

Come Again DAN SAVAGE I’m a 35-year-old straight woman, recently married, and everything is great. But I have been having problems reaching orgasm. When we ďŹ rst started dating, I had them all the time. It was only after we got engaged that it became an issue. He is not doing anything differently, and he works hard to give me oral pleasure, last longer, and include more foreplay. He’s sexy and attractive and has a great working penis. I am very aroused when we have sex, but I just can’t climax. It is weird because I used to very easily, and still can when I masturbate. I have never been so in love before and I have deďŹ nitely never been with a man who is so good to me. Honestly, all of my previous boyfriends did not treat me that well, but I never had a problem having orgasms. My husband is willing to do whatever it takes, but it’s been almost a year since I came during vaginal intercourse! Is this just a temporary problem that will ďŹ x itself? – My Orgasms Are Now Shy “This is a temporary problem that will ďŹ x itself,â€? said Dr. Meredith Chivers, an associate professor of psychology at Queen’s University and a world-renowned sex researcher who has done—and is still doing— groundbreaking work on female sexuality, desire, and arousal. “And here’s why it will ďŹ x itself,â€? said Dr. Chivers. “First, MOANS has enjoyed being orgasmic with her partner and previous partners. Second, even though she’s had a hiatus in orgasms through vaginal intercourse, she is able to have orgasms when masturbating. Third, she describes no concerns with becoming sexually aroused physically and mentally. Fourth, MOANS has a great relationship, has good sexual communication, and is sexually attracted to her partner. Fifth, what she’s experiencing is a completely normal and expected variation in sexual functioning that probably relates to stress.â€? -8/<

The orgasms you’re not having right now—orgasms during PIV sex with your husband—the lack of which is causing you stress? Most likely the result of stress, MOANS, so stressing out about the situation will only make the problem worse. “I wonder if the background stress of a big life change—getting married is among the top 10 most stressful life events—might be distracting or anxiety-provoking,â€? said Dr. Chivers. “Absolutely normal if it were.â€? Distracting, anxiety-provoking thoughts can also make it harder to come. “Being able to have an orgasm is about giving yourself over to pleasure in the moment,â€? said Dr. Chivers. “Research on brain activation during orgasm suggests that a key feature is deactivation in parts of the brain associated with emotion and cognitive control. So difďŹ culties reaching orgasm can arise from distracting, anxiety-provoking thoughts that wiggle their way in when you’re really aroused, maybe on the edge, but just can’t seem to make it over. They interfere with that deactivation.â€? Dr. Chivers’s advice will be familiar to anyone with a daughter under the age of 12: Let it go. “Let go of working toward vaginal orgasm during sex,â€? Dr. Chivers advised. “Take vaginal orgasm off the table for at least a month—you’re allowed to do other things and come other ways, just not through vaginal-penile intercourse. Instead of working toward the goal of bringing back your vaginal orgasm, enjoy being with your sexy husband and experiment with other ways of sharing pleasure, and if the vaginal orgasms don’t immediately come back, oh well. There are, fortunately, many roads to Rome. Enjoy!â€? My advice? Buy some stress-busting pot edibles if you’re lucky enough to live in a state that has legal weed, MOANS, or make your own if you live in a suck-ass state that doesn’t. And tell your husband to stop trying so hard—if his efforts are making you feel guilty, that’s going to be hugely counterproductive. Good luck! Q FOLLOW DR. CHIVERS ON TWITTER @DRMLCHIVERS
