Even better is when they’re limited beers that are only available in town, making them a special “locals only” treat. Take Yards Russian Imperial Stout: You won’t find this big, softly carbonated, roasty beer very far outside Philly. Full-bodied and rich, the creamy mouthfeel and roasted bitterness are kissed with notes of chocolate and coffee.

The folks at Neshaminy Creek might be relative newcomers to the craft beer scene, but they’ve already put together a roster of worthy beers like County Line IPA and Croydon Cream Ale. The Shape of Hops to Come, however, is on a whole ‘nother level: A huge nose full of citrus paves the way for juicy hop flavor, brisk yet balanced bitterness and easy drinkability. You don’t need to hop on a flight to Germany to enjoy a freshly brewed Helles lager—not when the folks at Dock Street make an excellent one right here. “Lager” is a dirty word for some craft beer drinkers, but those who enjoy subtle complexity will find a lot to appreciate in the style. This is a light colored (but not light flavored) lager known for an assertive, grainy malt profile, herbal hops touched with a bit of spice and absolute smoothness. Maybe more important, the Helles lager is one of the most versatile beers for pairing with food, capable of matching almost anything you throw at it. Look for it to turn up at local pubs.

winter beer drinking, few styles go as well with the bitter cold as the Scotch ale/wee heavy. McYunk, by the folks at Manayunk Brewing, is exactly what you want from this delicious style. A deep red color, the beer gives off earthy, smoky aromas that quickly invite you in for a sip. Burnt caramel, toasted cherries and nuts and spiced toffee blend with smoked sweetness for a rich, flavorful session ale you’ll want more than one of. This winter, try it at Grace Tavern.

Combining a few exotic hop strains with a crisp malt backbone, its fruitiness, light body and dry finish make it astonishingly drinkable. y the morning of Dec. 26, after way too many baroque holiday meals and an overabundance of takeout in between, I was in desperate need of a break. I awoke with a craving for the elemental pleasures of grilled meat and pasta the likes of which few pregnant women ever suffer from.

Which is how, at lunchtime, I found myself in a relatively quiet dining room at Lo Spiedo—Marc Vetri, Jeff Benjamin and Brad Spence’s latest restaurant.

Most restaurants aren’t usually at the top of their proverbial game in the immediate aftermath of being closed for a major holiday; I figured we’d have a quick pleasant bite. Then I took my first bite of chicken thigh spiedini, and it was the exact opposite of the stringy, dried-out crimes against poultry that had been committed in the name of General Tso the night before. Borne in an oval-shaped cast-iron trivet and lined up like the winning float in the chicken-prideday parade, each delicate knob shimmered with a pancetta agrodolce and was studded with dimples of charred flesh. This was everything that can go right with chicken when it’s shown respect.

Polenta cornbread, based on a recipe by Jeff Michaud, also outperformed its ordinarily humble M.O., and as I spooned my way from the cracker-crisp top and closer to the heat of the cast iron it arrived in, the polenta became ever more tenuous in form, nearly falling apart from its anointment with meat drippings collected from the wood-fire grill. It was a tour de force of textures.

Octopus benefited even more directly from that grill—expertly manned by Chef Scott Calhoun, former executive sous chef of Osteria, who’s running the kitchen here. It’s listed on the menu humbly, with a sense of coquettish understatement: “Spit-roasted octopus.” What came to the table was both exactly that and infinitely more, a handful of tentacles curled within themselves like some sort of art nouveau objet d’art. Somewhere in texture between a sweetbread and those succulent chicken thighs, each bite—first braised, then cooked on a spit over that oak-wood heat—was meaty and soulful.

Pork ribs, cooked in custom-designed cages over the grill and continuously mopped with olive oil and rosemary, were blistered in some spots and melted in others. Each time any of my family removed a massive rib from their mouth, their chins glistened with the liquified fat. Those decadent bites of rib were perfectly chased with a grilled focaccia baton swiped through the earthy mysteries of silky ricotta and slow roasted artichokes. A side dish of mac and cheese also did the trick, the scallop-edged cresto di gallo pasta bathed in a clingy sauce of asiago, pecorino, parmesan and cheddar. My wife and I ordered it for our four-year-old, and finished it ourselves while she was otherwise distracted by a rib as big as her face.

All of this is offered up, unexpectedly, right in sight of the sports arenas and stadiums down on South Broad Street. Our table that afternoon, in fact, was right in view of the Linc, and the food was good enough to wash away the sour taste I’d had in my mouth ever since attending the losing effort against Dallas a few Sunday nights ago.

The beverages did, too. From the smart, very wellconsidered wines and beers of beverage director Steve Wildy’s list, to the excellent cocktails that he conceived with head bartender Stephen Warner, you will drink brilliantly here. The bloody Mary’s tomatoes are smoked out back in the same device that handles the brisket; sadly, though, the Mary is coming off the list now that tomato season is firmly past.

The electrically refreshing gin and tonic is comprised of Bluecoat Barrel Reserve and Wildy’s house-made gentian-cardamom tonic. Service is up to the usual lofty Vetri standards, and the prices, especially considering the richness of the food and the generosity of the portions, are beyond fair.

All of which adds up to a whole new reason to head down to South Broad, even if you don’t have tickets for any particular game. It’s also a fantastic cure for the holiday-eating blues, and a great place to visit no matter what time of year it is. n

Before I could reply or redeem myself, the Rubbermaid container was strapped into the front seat of my Volkswagen with the safety belt. Andy and Neal loaned me a feeder and a water tray, wished me luck, and sent me on my way. The sun was still up as I got back on the highway. I remember as a kid feeling sad as I’d watch a horse shoving his snout out of a steel grate as the tractor-trailer hauling his crate sped down the interstate. But there I was, with six chickens kicking and clucking in the darkness of a plastic prison as I happily drove back to Kensington with the windows down.

I’d built the chicken coop a few days before I picked the chickens up from Andy and Neal. My supplies consisted of about a hundred pieces of scrap lumber and ten bucks worth of hardware. It wasn’t as nice as the labyrinth of well-maintained chicken runs Tutti just vacated, but it was better than the fate she would have faced had she found a home where the new owners wanted meat and not eggs.

The old farmer’s advice is to never name an animal on a farm, but we couldn’t help ourselves. They were our first chickens, and we came up with some pretty good names. There was the bald-necked one that looked like an old man, so we named her Uncle Bob. There were the two Silver Laces that looked exactly alike, warranting the names Tomayto and Tomahto. We named the biggest one Motherclucker for obvious reasons. And we named the final two Ameraucanas Sally McCabe and Tutti. Sally McCabe was in honor of a mutual friend of the same name whom Elisa and I admired in the gardening world. Tutti was Elisa’s idea, and I never found out where she got it.

But giving them names wasn’t our first mistake. Our first mistake was thinking they were all hens. By my rough math, it was going to be about eight weeks before the young hens were due to lay their first eggs. Every day we checked the hollowed bowls they were beginning to carve for themselves in the laying house. But after nine weeks and still no eggs, Uncle Bob’s feathers started showing fiery red streaks of masculinity, and the gait of his strut got longer. I didn’t want to believe it at first. But after Uncle Bob let out his first crow, I had to face the fact that one of those nests did not belong to him.

I talked it over with Andy and Neal, and other farming friends. Some said that roosters could be mean and stress out the hens, preventing them from laying.

Others said that a rooster is fine as long as your neighbors are cool with it, and that a rooster will actually protect the hens. It was true that most of my homeowner neighbors hailed from Puerto Rico, where chickens and roosters are as common as squirrels and rabbits, so they were not instantly knocking on my door after a few days of Uncle Bob’s crowing. But as I also learned, the bucolic image of a rooster crowing at the break of dawn was (inconveniently) bullshit. Roosters crow at 3 a.m., 5:15 a.m., 10:39 a.m., 4:19 a.m., 5:45 a.m., and 8:03 a.m..

There is no set time.

After a week, my own sanity was on the line. So with that in mind, and the fact that his name was already Uncle Bob rather than say Sally or Tutti, it wasn’t too traumatic to gently take him from the coop, put him in the home-made killing cone, say a soft prayer, and slit his throat.

This was my first kill. The blade was dull and my heart bruised my breastplate as it beat against it. Later, as I watched the video my friend Rob shot on his phone (and which he also set to the soundtrack of Alice in Chains’s “Rooster”), my hand was shaking so uncontrollably that I was surprised I killed him on my first try. There were just a few flicks of the legs and that was it. 

ou ready for your chickens?” Neal asked as he gave me a hug, smushing the chicken he was already holding between our chests.

Out of all of the urban farmers in Philadelphia, I considered Andy and Neal the closest equivalent to Elisa and me. Just like Elisa, Andy had strategically moved into a house with a vacant lot next door, with the intent to start a garden. And just as I did, Neal fell in love, and then gained not just a house but also an entire urban farm.

But what set Andy and Neal apart from us was that not only did they already have chickens and bees but that they had them in such abundance. While we only wanted the six chickens they were offering to us, they were forced to hold onto the remaining twenty-four that Andy had ambitiously ordered from the hatchery in Kentucky and were now roaming around the yard. And while I was considering ordering a package of bees for the following spring, Andy and Neal already had five hives. They also had turkeys that were currently perched on their neighbor’s roof. Although this could have been a nuisance in the neighborhood, they gained the goodwill of their community by setting aside a few of the turkeys for their neighbor’s Thanksgiving meals. And they had a garden design that put ours to shame. Other than all of that, we were pretty evenly matched.

“Did you bring something to carry them in?”

Andy asked.

“Yeah, hold on,” I said as I walked back to the car and grabbed the Rubbermaid container from the trunk.

“Great, this will work,” Neal said as he grabbed the closest chicken by the leg and flipped it upside down. “Here, open the lid.”

He stuffed the chicken in the bin and I closed the lid.

As I snapped the ends into place I almost lost control of my grip as the chicken began flapping its wings inside, causing the weight of the bin to shift. It wasn’t until the chicken’s head rammed the lid that I dropped the bin.

Luckily, the lid was on tight, but the movement stopped from inside. I looked at Andy.

“Don’t worry, the chicken’s fine. Here, now it’s your turn, grab a chicken.”

“Um, well, I don’t...”

“Oh, just grab it,” Neal said, pushing me toward the coop.

There were so many chickens running around, but I wasn’t being selective. I just reached down and grabbed the first leg I could find. I wasn’t looking, so I didn’t know if it was the beak of the chicken I grabbed or one of his comrade’s that pierced my hand. But at the first shock of pain I dropped the chicken on its head.

“You better get used to picking up chickens,” Andy chided me as he and Neal quickly collected the next five and

What It Represents The Philadelphia Museum of Art showcases its collection of African-American art like never before. BY SHEENA LESTER

early 116 years ago, the Philadelphia Museum of Art added to its tony collection a work that was monumental not only for its mastery of skill, passion and purpose but also for the historic nature of the acquisition: “The Annunciation,” a breathtaking religious-themed painting created the previous year by Henry Ossawa Tanner, the great Pittsburghborn, Philadelphia-raised artist who fled to Paris to escape the racism that threatened to destroy both his country and his spirit. It was the first piece of art by a black American to be obtained by a major museum in this country.

So began the slow, pained journey toward the affirmation and acceptance of black artists—and their ingenious, soul-derived creations across a myriad of mediums—into the wilds of U.S. cultural bastions and its collective cultural imagination. Yes, the works of Tanner and his peers screamed from their canvases and corridors, this nation’s darker children, the freed and enslaved sons and daughters of African-captive laborers, still seen as inhumane by many, were just as capable of delving into untapped psychic depths and pulling undeniable amazement from the darkness.

This weekend, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is opening its doors to reveal Represent: 200 Years of African American Art, an ambitious exhibit years in the making, one that features nearly 75 pieces by over 50 black artists—Tanner’s “The Annunciation” and “Portrait of the Artist’s Mother” among them, aside ingenious output by the likes of Alma Thomas, Horace Pippin, Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence, Carrie Mae Weems, James Van Der Zee, Gordon Parks, Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker and so many notable others. With it, they’ve published a 200plus page catalogue that ably explores the museum’s collection, the landscapes in which the noble seeds for its creation were planted and the rich cultural bounty that is its wondrous fruit.

PMA curatorial assistant John Vick, who helped plan, organize and curate Represent, spoke with PW about the wide-ranging exhibit, which opens this Saturday.

Obviously, this was a passion project. How long did it take to put together? What was the process in creating the framework, with consulting curator Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw, for what the exhibit would feature and focus on? Like all big projects at the museum, the Represent catalogue was several years in the making. Dr. Shaw did an exceptional job writing for and editing the book.

Lots of support came from the members of the African American Collections Committee, from the museum’s director, Timothy Rub; from curators of five different areas of the collection and from our Education division.

My task over the past year or so has been to work with Gwendolyn to create an exhibition that would follow the framework and contents of the catalogue. This involved a great deal of editing—always the most difficult task, be-

community centers, they certainly remain an important place for people, especially young people, to access the arts. The PMA itself has a huge education division that focuses much of its efforts on young people. Through class visits, studio programs, teacher resources, and distance learning, the museum does tremendous work bringing the arts to students all across the area, often at very little or no cost. I think this model of a large public institution being connected to, supporting and working with individuals or organizations in its community is a wonderful and vital thing.

The name of the show—Represent—feels almost hyper-contemporary and so deliberately hip-hop.

How was it chosen? The title was Gwendolyn’s idea. She suggested it and, after some discussion, we all agreed it was great. The word “represent” has specific cultural associations, to hip-hop for instance, but its basic meaning of reflecting one’s own self, community, ideas or so forth in a positive and proud way seems to have grown to become a part of a broader, popular vocabulary. It’s also a word that is central to any conversation about art because that’s what art does. Figuratively, abstractly or conceptually, art represents the world while also being part of it.

Are there special events and programs tied to this exhibit that have never been done before with PMA shows? Yes, we are doing a lot of programs and events tied to the exhibition, including a public conversation on Feb. 1 with three artists in the exhibition and a number of music and poetry performances.

These programs will all feature people or material new to visitors. We’re also trying out the museum’s first Wikipedia Edit-a-thon. This is something that some institutions and organizations have done to increase the amount of available information on people or topics that have traditionally received less attention than they deserve. Of course, we will be focusing on African American artists, who are generally underrepresented on Wikipedia. cause one wants to include everything—and some gentle rearranging of themes to make the exhibition work as a physical and visual experience. We also added some aspects that would be unique to the exhibition, such as audio excerpts of recorded interviews with artists discussing their work and career. Now that both the book is done and the show is almost open, I feel that the two halves of the project complement each other well.

Are there any specific works or artists you wanted to feature in the exhibit, but, for whatever reason, were unable to? The catalogue and the show reflect what is in the museum’s collection. It is an exceptional group, with many important artists and great works, as visitors will see. But there is always room to expand a collection to represent more artists or more of someone’s work. There are African American artists from the 1800s to right now that would be wonderful additions to the museum’s collection. Building the collection in that way will continue to be part of the museum’s responsibility and purpose.

Speaking of which, the show’s catalogue, with its insightful essays, does a wonderful job of exploring how New Deal federal arts programs and the communitybased art centers throughout the country born from them had a huge impact on black artists and art communities. How do initiatives like those still, decades later, impact black art and American art overall? What would the perfect modern-day equivalent look like to you? same stereotypes to show how senseless and damaging they can be. For some artists, resistance could also mean making work that is not outwardly about an African American subject even when the expectation is that they should. I hope visitors to the exhibition recognize and appreciate such aspects of the works because they reflect a major part of this nation’s history and also an important way that art can communicate.

What has the entire experience been like for you personally, as both a scholar and lover of art? What’ve been some of your most thrilling moments while toiling on Represent? What pieces for you have the most resonance, and why?

It feels like America is in the midst of such social and racial tumult, with last year’s protests surrounding police killings of unarmed black men and women.

Have you seen see any art emerging from these communities that we may one day see in museums and galleries in Philadelphia and elsewhere? There will undoubtedly be important and interesting art that comes out of events that occurred over the past year. I have been so keenly focused on developing this exhibition that I honestly have not spent enough time looking at what is being made right now. That said, the protests and public conversations about race during the last year have certainly been on the minds of my colleagues and me while organizing the show. Visitors, similarly, will bring their own contemporary context with them when they see the show, because art, even something made a century ago, will continually allow itself to be seen in a new way at different moments in time. n

Helping to organize the exhibition has been both the most demanding and most rewarding experience of my career so far. It has been wonderful to work with Dr. Shaw, who brings to the project so much knowledge, an unyielding passion, and a great sense of respect for the material and others. My colleagues at the museum have provided similar support and advice, so it’s really been a group effort. Working on Represent gave me the opportunity to sit down and talk with some amazing artists, like Barkley L. Hendricks, Joyce Scott, Odili Odita and others. Those interviews have probably been the most thrilling moments so far, though there are events yet to come.

As for my favorite works, I am drawn to many things for many different reasons.

The storage jar by the enslaved potter David Drake impresses me with its construction and poetic inscription, while making me think about the industries and businesses during the 1800s or before that benefited from slavery despite its obvious injustice. Tanner’s “The Annunciation” fills me with warmth because it seems to radiate light; I also remember seeing it as a young child on trips to the museum with my parents. The landscapes by William Henry Johnson and Joseph Yoa-

kum make me want to travel and see the world. But works of people by artists like Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, Aaron Douglas, James Van Der Zee, and others reinforce for me the values of humanity and community. I love the abstract works that are beautiful to look at and provoke a curiosity for how they were made, like Martin Puryear’s “Old Mole.” And then works like William Earle William’s photo of an underground railroad stop in Kimberton, Pennsylvania, brings me back to thinking about history—the events that occurred, how the stories were written or recorded, and what has changed as other things remained constant.

en Kessler can’t help but grin from ear to ear when the crowd of 300 at Chaplin’s music cafe in Spring City showers him with an ovation after the final notes of his poignant folk tune “Too Lonely.” Once upon a time, the former vaudeville theater’s stage presented the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton; on this fall evening, it’s hosting the record-release party for Kessler’s foursong EP, So It Goes. A few minutes later, as he begins glad-handing friends and family and selling Tshirts to new fans who’ve come out after hearing the Blue Bell resident’s music on WXPN, he says, simply, “Everything went really well.” It’s typical understatement from a musician who’d be mighty impressive even if he wasn’t only 16 years old—spending five days a week in Wissahickon High’s classrooms, sweating the SATs and college applications on the horizon. “It’s like I’m leading a double life.”

It was only a year and a half ago, in August 2013, that Kessler decided to focus most of his extracurricular hours on songwriting and performing. Nine months later, he was one of four songsmiths to win the Philadelphia Songwriters Project—quite an accomplishment, considering how many of the other entrants have been writing and playing longer than Kessler has been alive. “I was absolutely blown away,” he says. “Who would have thought that I would win?” Then again, Kessler, a careful student of the history of music, is well aware that he’s entering a fertile period in the life of a songwriter—that much of the greatest material in the annals of rock was penned by those 27 and under. “You look at what Bob Dylan and what so many others have done before they were 30,” he says. “It’s undeniable. I’m going for it now.”

And he continues branching out: He recently entered the National YoungArts Foundation contest, dedicated to discovering the next wave of visual, literary and performing artists. More than 10,000 entered; Kessler is one of 600 selected to travel to

New York in May to cultivate their skills. “That’s a few months away,” he says nonchalantly. I’m still part of the Philadelphia music scene, which I love. There’s no pressure here. It’s a great place to incubate. This is where it all starts.” n

am Smith was pretty much one of the biggest success stories of 2014. Though his steam started picking up in 2012 with his guest spots on Disclosure’s “Latch” and Naughty Boy’s “La La La,” ‘twas his May debut LP, In the Lonely Hour, that catapulted him into superstardom. There he was, seated next to Katy Perry at the VMAs, snickering with Ariana Grande during commercials and pulling in Mary J. Blige to mess with “Stay With Me,” the smash hit that’s earned him Record, Song and Best Pop Solo Performance Grammy nods. He could take home six next month, and he’s already topped the BBC Sound of 2014 poll. We hear he won lots of hearts at last year’s Q102 Jingle Ball, too. Sure, we got to know Sam via these guest-vocalist spots on hype singles—and even through the fun-times goodness of Nirvana, his 2013 EP—but Lonely Hour was a breathlessly bluesy mediation on unrequited love. Selma (Director: Ava DuVernay / Writer: Paul Webb)

Sometimes a moment gets the film it needs. Such a movie is Ava DuVernay’s Selma, a portrait of the seminal 1965 march organized to demand a Voting Rights Act that would protect black voters from disenfranchisement in the postdesegregation South. The march galvanized the public, and the VRA was passed in 1965.

At heart, though, Selma is neither the sometimes-biopic of Dr. Martin Luther King it has to be or the historical reenactment some critics have asked it to be. It’s a movie concerned with the march, and its most nimble work is in illuminating scenes rather than trying to explicate them. A crowded kitchen scene introduces Richie Jean Jackson (Niecy Nash) to a handful of characters whose names might rarely be mentioned again, but the magnificent ensemble cast inhabits their roles so well that the parallel of both a room full of individuals and of a household inviting a cause doesn’t need any more emphasis. DuVernay steers with equal assurance through the frustration, violence and schisms in public opinion that surrounded the march. Even David Oyelowo, note-perfect as King, never takes over; King was a figurehead, and Selma offers some affecting glimpses of King’s vulnerability (a crucial moment in jail is shadowed like an allegorical Renaissance portrait), but Selma always re-centers the movement, not the man.

The moment for Selma, however unfortunately, is ours.

Watching police gas and beat peaceful protesters might, five years ago, have felt like part of an ugly past rather than a reminder of an ugly present. Part of DuVernay’s skill is in neatly avoiding swelling-music, staged epiphanies meant to illuminate a country a half-century later. Instead, she shows us a portrait of a necessary moment, and lets us understand for ourselves that some things aren’t nearly as far past as we’d like them to be. | G.V.

Mr. Turner

(Director/writer: Mike Leigh) Technically, Mr. Turner is a biopic: It sketches vignettes across several decades in the life of painter J.M.W. Turner, whose stunning, evocative landscapes presaged the heyday of Impressionism. Many characters appear doing more or less what history tells us they did: John Constable at his canvas, Mary Somerville with her discoveries.

But this is Mike Leigh we’re talking about. Despite the historical cameos and outdoors shots that cannily capture the veils of light and color that Turner sought, Leigh’s greatest joy is setting characters in a painstaking setting and unpeeling them in fits and starts, without ever quite offering an easy thesis statement. He could ask for no better conduit for Turner than Timothy Spall, who throws himself into the role with phlegmy gusto, making the genius awkward and even off-putting—and not because of the grunts and snorts that liberally pepper his dealings with the world. Those take on their own charm, amid the parade of drawing rooms overstuffed with furniture and gentry. Instead, Leigh keeps tugging on the thread of Turner’s housekeeper Hannah Danby (Dorothy Atkinson), whose unrequited love takes on a weight that lingers; Turner can forget her, but we never do.

As with the underrated Topsy-Turvy, which reveled in the minutiae of the art and was less concerned with traditional biopic arcs, Mr. Turner offers little of the artist’s process. There’s a little spit and a trip up a yardarm, but largely, Leigh argues, an artist lives in the world they recreate. It’s the details, then, that matter most: Turner paints the light he lives in, and it’s only up to us to notice. It’s an unflinching but infinitely sympathetic lens less interested than chronicling history than creating characters, and it succeeds. T

here are as many jokes about Ken Burns’ documentaries as there are cumulative hours of Ken Burns documentaries, but there’s something to be said for giving The Roosevelts 14 hours of breathing room. No great figure exists in a vacuum; to remove either the critical or the personal lens is a compression that can lose the essential nature of the subject. Of course, it’s hard to ignore a compelling biography. Last year alone: the too-glossy Cesar Chavez, the stolid The Imitation Game, a notably subdued The Theory of Everything and two biopics of Yves Saint Laurent, among others. But they’re often suspended between documentary and film, caught in rose-colored legacies and the occasional desire to please participants. No wonder there’s the refuge of the old “based on true events” tag, often as much a creative disclaimer as a legal one.

This week sees a serendipitous double feature, with two award-frontrunner period pieces: Mike Leigh’s Mr. Turner and Ava DuVernay’s Selma. And though both are true stories, they each draw power through the ways they avoid being straightforward biopics.

Mr. Turner, about the eponymous British painter, is a biopic in its particulars (historical figures who appear, major events that get memorialized), but one of its greatest achievements is in how lightly it treats biographical demands. Despite being drenched in the light he committed to canvas and the occasional look at a finished painting, there isn’t much of Turner’s work in Mr. Turner: the artist is tangential to the man. As par for the course on a Leigh movie, the story’s given no preamble. It jumps years without signposts, introduces characters with no fanfare and avoids building an arc. There’s a damning thread in his disregard for the women in his life, but in a distinctly non-biopic tactic, the film reaches few conclusions about it. It’s a failing that’s forgiven as much as the viewer wishes to for-

give. It’s a vivid portrait, as moody and Impressionist as Turner could have asked for and more honest than he might have liked—perhaps the best kind of biopic.

In telling the story of the Selma marches for the Voting Rights Act, DuVernay goes for breadth: a timeline of a few crucial weeks surrounding the march and the involvement of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (David Oyelowo). It avoids centering on King, however, and illuminates the many people involved in this seminal protest, touching on political offices and grassroots activists alike—a biopic of the movement rather than of a few, trying to capture a moment in history rather than a standard biography. Selma has fallen under critique for its adaptation of events, particularly in painting President Lyndon Johnson as a reluctant participant.

As with any biopic, there are glossed-over or condensed specifics (he was, perhaps, less supportive of J. Edgar Hoover’s plans for King). But DuVernay’s LBJ receives much the same treatment as her King. Both are flawed men under such pressure, it occasionally breaks them, and both facing the right direction of history but standing in two very different places—one where civil rights is one of a hundred considerations on a timeline, and one where civil rights are a matter of life and death. They are necessary viewpoints mapped over men; Selma doesn’t ask that either of them be more.

Of course, it behooves a filmmaker handling a true story to do their subject justice. But both Mr. Turner and Selma are strong arguments that simply recreating events in someone’s life isn’t enough to capture the unique and personal nature of that justice. The adaption of life into story will always require compromises.

It’s a filmmaker’s vision that bridges the gap between factual guide and thematic touchstone: based on real events, resembling real persons and a necessary polish with style. n

Lest there be confusion: I’m not disparaging grinding. Grinding on the dance floor is fucking great. R. Kelly was correct about exactly two things: the hook on “Ignition,” and that there is nothing wrong with a little bump and grind. I can think of no better way to audition the eroticism of a good-looking stranger than gyrating against them to music. That’s not what I’m talking about here. I’m talking about the club equivalent of catcalling: the tactic of taking away your target’s option to ignore you.

Their internal thought process must go something like: “That girl doesn’t have anybody on her butt. I’m near her butt.

I’m gonna go be on her butt.” Lampreys, after all, just go grab onto a shark because they want to, not because they believe the shark will benefit from it.

And much like catcalling and parasitic symbiosis, there are some people— particularly, drunk ones—who are willing to go along. Every once in a while, I see someone turnt up, loving life, gleefully temporarily forgetting about their student loans, and they respond to a crotchto-butt greeting with enthusiasm, giving the anonymous saddle a ride. But most of the time, it’s a bored-looking girl who accommodates the stowaway passenger with some level of disassociation. After an arbitrarily tolerated duration, her butt parts ways with the crotch, which often goes on to repeat the same forgettable dry hump with another partner. It’s not unlike the joyless process of trying on work shoes at Payless.

Here’s the thing to remember: Pickupartist tactics are most successful with people who are looking to hook up, obviously, but also specifically on females who subscribe to negative ideas about their own sex and therefore enjoy having a strange man take over a situation. So the key to eradicating this annoyance is for women to stop rolling with it. I have no hope that an 800-word column can convince those dudes; they wouldn’t read this many paragraphs in a row. So, girls in the club, we must make it happen there: Tell these parasites to piss off. Don’t accommodate them for even a couple seconds out of some socialized idea that you have to be grateful to everyone who pays you attention. If you want to be humped, by all means, go with it. But if it makes you feel even a little bit squicked out, show that you’re worth the effort of eye contact. Go with your gut and defend your butt. n

heoretically, I have a good understanding of flirting. I’ve read copious studies about what a human should say and do to massage the idea into another human’s brain that their parts should bang up against each other. We have empirical evidence for what techniques work best on which types of people; for instance, formulized pickup artistry works really well on girls with low self-esteem who have high levels of internalized sexism.

That understanding, though, should not be taken to mean I’m actually any good at flirting. Historically, my favorite technique has been to 1) spot an appealing target and 2) do everything possible to avoid letting them know I’m interested.

I was “actively pursuing” my partner for almost a year before he noticed. One ex brilliantly figured out she was my crush after observing she was the only person to whom I wasn’t paying attention. So my expertise in the game might be limited.

Perhaps it’s somewhere in this blind spot that I’m missing the critical explanation of one tactic deployed by a significant segment of our nation’s dance-clubgoing males. I am referring to those guys who take their cue from Mike Myers and Jason: quietly approaching from behind, lurking ominously while their target remains unawares (“Look behind you!”) and then introducing themselves crotch-first without so much as eye contact first. A variation on this technique: approaching a target who appears to be perfectly happy dancing with her friends and then touching her arm or back so she’ll spin to look at what possible fire-related emergency warranted the interruption.

From my vantage, it seems like the most obviously wrong bad stupid thing. Worldwide, human greetings are done face first, with enough personal space and time for the individual to assess whether you’re wielding an axe and the intent of burying it in a skull. You wouldn’t approach a strange dog from behind and just reach out and touch his back. Or maybe you would, and that’s why you have hooks for hands now. In either case, your parents failed you.

Touching without asking is only for inanimate objects—specifically, those that you own or that are available for general use by the community. In this situation, I’m left pondering whether these dudes would find it equally appropriate to go rifling through my backpack, or if it’s just that they think women

aking a look at human history, you could draw some confusing conclusions about our species. We claim to love each other, yet we kill each other on a regular basis; we say we want to be free, but we’re willing to give up our liberty for security; and we’ve eagerly interconnected ourselves more than ever with the Internet, which helps us experience new existential crises daily.

Our view of life on Earth is often dependent on perspective, though, and our perspective can flip at a moment’s notice. Sometimes it just takes hearing one rude comment on the train and suddenly I want to give up on all humanity.

By the same token, our emotional whims stand ready and eager to revise history for us whenever a new situation in the present colors our attitude.

For instance, when I remember the days I spent in homelessness and active addiction, I can recall my experience in diametrically opposite ways. I can be proud that I made it through those painful years, viewing my survival as a life-affirming tale of human strength. Or I can despair that I’m a broken person with such a traumatic past that surely I’m forever unlovable. Or I can be evenhanded with my memories, realizing that brokenness, survival and all the life experiences that go along with both—the good ones and the traumatic ones—are simply part and parcel of being human.

Perspective, then, is the lens through which we determine our individual realities, and it’s often born from our state of mind. It’s the old glassempty-versus-glass-full scenario—but the thing is, how we view the glass today is also affected by how we’ve gotten used to looking at glasses in the past. While some of us are anointed with a naturally cheery disposition and outlook, others are pointedly not, whether through jaded experience or innate personality. And, like it or not, nobody likes hanging out with a perpetual pessimist. As much as we may snicker daily over the snark that populates our social feeds, there’s nothing particularly heart-warming about sarcasm or irony.

I mean, take a moment and picture one of the happiest, most graceful people you know. Are you picturing an endless scroll of sharp retorts and smackdowns and troll-face memes? No, almost certainly not.

Changing that perspective is necessary, then, in order to live more positively. Hell, if you’re one of those natural pessimists, it’s vital to stay conscious of your perspective just to make sure you’re accurately assessing reality. (That’s no big “secret,” either, regardless of what some guy tried to sell you on a talk show last decade.)

As it turns out, fostering a sense of gratitude is highly effective at making people happier. That’s not just rhetoric: A pair of research psychologists, Robert A.

Emmons of the University of California-Davis and Michael E. McCullough of the University of Miami, have focused on happiness and gratitude. “In one study,” reports the Harvard Mental Health Letter, “they asked all participants to write a few sentence each week, focusing on particular topics.” The researchers divided their subjects into three groups, asking each to record either positive, negative or indifferent things that happened over the course of a week. Within three months, the participants who focused on positive things were happier and had a better perspective on their lives compared to the other two groups—especially those who focused on negative memories. The gratitude-focused

participants also “had fewer visits to physicians than those who focused on sources of aggravation.”

Putting that idea into more DIY sort of practice, author Elizabeth Gilbert blogged a couple years ago about a thing she’d crafted to orient herself toward the goodness in her world: a happiness jar. In the years since, the idea has gradually picked up steam online— not the least on Pinterest, which is where Eliza Leon picked it up, ran with it, and brought it to her Instagram, where I found it.

For the past two years now, the 45-year-old Chicago sales representative explains, she’s taken an everyday mason jar and begun filling it with tiny notes she writes. Those notes contain nothing but good things that have happened to her. Over the course of 2014, she put hundreds of the little dispatches in the jar. By New Year’s Eve, the jar was overflowing with good tidings.

“The first year I did it,” says Leon, “it just seemed like a fun idea. At the end of the year, you read everything in the jar and reminisce.” She discovered, though, that it wasn’t just about reflecting on the year gone by—it organically helped her cultivate a different viewpoint. “This was a way to remember the good” in life, she explains. “So much time is spent on concentrating on the negative that it’s just nice to focus on things that make you happy.”

All the project takes is a jar, some paper and a daily or weekly commitment to pause for a second and record the good things you’ve encountered. Leon notes that, since social media has become an automatic daily activity for many people, the idea of updating something regularly isn’t as off-putting as many may have found it pre-Facebook. “I also maintain a 365 photo blog on Tumblr where I post a photo every day,” she notes, and “the good-things jar isn’t nearly as time-intensive. There’s no pressure to add to it every day; some days, you can’t think of anything good. Other days, lots of good things happen.”

For her, some of those good things are as matter-of-fact as getting a good deal on airline tickets. Others are about the weather. “4/20/14,” one reads: “A perfect day in Chicago, sunny and warm!” Another, “10/3/14,” was a day for longdistance friendship: “I had dinner with my friend Allison in Columbus, OH.” Some days, Leon even recorded the simple joy of meeting new furry friends, like “Hildy and Blue, two greyhound dogs in the neighborhood.”

The key point is that all the notes in the jar are positive observations. “When I read the good things, they make me smile, and sometimes I laugh, because they’re silly things,” Leon says. “Warm and fuzzy. I keep the jar on my desk, and if I’m having a day, I’ll crack it open to remind myself of things that have made me happy.”

Most importantly, while the practice begins as a reactive activity, it holds the quiet power to turn one’s attitude adjustment proactive. As Leon puts it: “Instead of concentrating on how terrible life is, you start to look for good things to fill your jar.” n

A quick note: Some weeks, I get questions that are longer than this column itself. I can jam a lot of words into this space, provided I avoid using longer words when shorter ones are available—e.g., “gay” has one syllable, “homosexual” has five; “asshole” has two syllables, “former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee” has twelve. Suffice it to say, very long letters rarely make it in. So while I usually appreciate letter writers who get to the point—the more succinct the question, the better the chances it will make it into the column—it’s possible to be too brief. Such is the case with your letter, SFSM: I know what kind of phone you have, but it would be more helpful to know if you are male or female or some other point along the gender spectrum.
