L

ast year, in an effort to make the honored tradition of the Mummers Parade more diverse, the San Mateo Carnavaleros led the march down Broad Street. Because of a series of unfortunate happenings, the Mummers Parade is readily viewed as Philadelphia’s timehonored shitshow.

It was supposed to be a great day, for the group of Mexican-Americans to savor, but the 2016 parade was instead overcast by countless displays of racial and gender insensitivity from other Mummers groups and arguably intoxicated members of the crowd.

The 2017 event was tame by comparison, but still evoked mixed feelings from many Mummers like Monica Orozco. A Mexican and proud Carnavalero first; she’s even prouder to be an American citizen, excited about the next chapter of life in Philadelphia.

But Orozco isn’t blind to the fact that by virtue of her heritage, she’s the minority, and her group by some with obtuse and archaic ways of thinking is labeled as the outcast.

ast week, the Philadelphia Zoo euthanized Zenda, the oldest living lion in a United States zoological facility. Zenda’s final roar was last Thursday, when she was laid to rest as a result of “decreased mobility” according to zoo officials.

According to National Geographic, female lions have a life expectancy of only 19 years. Zenda, who arrived at the Zoo in 1993, lived to be 25 which according to popular pet chain, Purina, would make her 175 in human years.

2017: Year of digging deeper With the new year, many companies and government agencies are levying increased taxes and other charges. Here’s what it’s going to cost: $40: The annual amount that Pennsylvania’s 8 cents-a-gallon gas tax hike will cost those who drive about 10,000 miles a year. It’s far worse in Jersey, where commuters were hit up for 23 cents a gallon more in gas taxes in November. $48: The annual increase in the cost of drinking water for typical residential customers, under new rates set to begin in July. $65.70: The annual cost of Philadelphia’s sugary drinks tax if you gulp one 12-ounce soda per day. On one hand, the tax will fund the new PHLpreK program; on the other, you could stand to drop a few pounds. Might be a good time to can the Red Bull and pick up a bottle of water instead.

The contributor of that story, William Kenny of the Northeast Times, followed up with this update: “I was at the gym today on Frankford Avenue and noticed that the city had removed the offending parking meters and moved the parking signs on the 7400 and 7300 blocks. But they didn’t bother to look beyond that. So they still have the same problem to the north and south. Maybe their shift ended early that day and they plan to return later to finish the job.”

FINANCE Don’t let Philly’s phenomenal food and booze scene drain your paycheck

O

For the majority of Philadelphians, we spend our lives working in jobs to afford things that—if we took a harder look—we don’t really need. To ensure you make this the year of “doing stuff” instead “having stuff,” PW sought the help of a few fellow Philadelphians to provide sound advice.

The goal? To help all of us truly get off that familiar wheel and chart a path to collective success.

ne downside of Philly’s praiseworthy food and drink scene is it stokes a culture of always going out. Whether it’s hitting up the latest Craig LaBan-approved listing, exploring old mom-and-pop eateries in less-trafficked neighborhoods, or just being a regular at your nearby dive bar—Philly nightlife is a home away from home for everyone.

But when making those New Year’s financial resolutions, Philadelphians underestimate the small individual cost of going out—costs that add up to an unhealthy chunk of their budget.

Nick Tierno, a Center City-based financial adviser, said that some of his clients are shocked to learn that, upon sitting down to make a budget, their socializing over food and booze costs them $500 to $1,000 a month.

“I’m not in the business of telling people not to have fun,” Tierno said. “But what I tell them to do is figure out how much you need to save every single month to feel good, and then go and have reasonable fun with the rest.”

Going hand in hand with the food scene is transportation. Philadelphians are notoriously in love with their cars. (Admit it: Sometimes you drive to the corner store.) But cars are also costly, and in ways that go beyond gas, repairs,

and insurance. Tierno said his clients are also surprised at the added cost of street parking, parking garages, and the inevitable tickets from the Philadelphia Parking Authority. Not to mention that one run-in with a tow truck can set you back $250 in a heartbeat.

So if you want to be a better friend to your bank account this year, be honest with yourself about your needs and don’t aim so big.

“People will set a goal that’s so totally out of reach that they’ll feel defeated when they don’t hit it immediately,” Tierno said. “They’re more wishing and hoping than really planning. Start off with one small goal and build up momentum from there.”

Tierno’s ideal strategy is to put away 20 percent of your paycheck each month, separated between liquid savings (investments) and cash savings (for everything from vacations to wedding rings to the “oh, shit” emergency fund).

Google “budget spreadsheet” and you’ll get plenty of options. Tech-savvy folks should consider using some budgeting apps, too. (Advisors recommend Mint for those who have iPhones.)

Don’t check in on it every day, unless you want to freak yourself out. But either pay attention to your bottom line or pay a financial broker to do it for you.

“Majority of people, 99.9 percent of people, are intelligent enough to [manage their own finances],” says Tierno. “But 99.9 percent of them are too busy or too lazy to do it.”

Low-commitment political resolutions for those who hate Philly politics

W

hile Philadelphians generally flood the polls for presidential elections, engagement in local races is notoriously lackluster. Only 24 percent of eligible voters showed up for the last mayoral race, according to a Knight Foundation report, and for down-ballot contests the turnout is even worse.

We get it. There are plenty of reasons to be disenchanted with Philadelphia’s political structure. Your main priorities for 2017 are to shed 20 pounds and save an extra $20 a week. But if even a small part of you yearns for a healthier democracy this year, consider one low-commitment resolution to stay involved.

Get one person to register to vote, even if it’s you.

This is the easiest resolution to make, said David Thornburgh, president of the political watchdog group Committee of Seventy. If you’re eligible and aren’t registered, get online tomorrow and start the process. You don’t even have to commit to voting. Just sign up. It’s never been easier. If you are already registered, your one feel-good political contribution of the year can be to get one person you

know to register. Grandmother, neighbor, SEPTA driver—help one other person engage.

Mark the next election on your calendar right now.

Some high-impact elections are around the corner. District Attorney Seth Williams—the official who sets policy for the prosecution of criminals in this city—will face challengers in the May 16 primary. There are also less flashy elections for city controller and trial judges.

There are even spots for election officers. Most people don’t know this but the people who run your local polling place—they’re elected officials.

And you can run if you want, Thornburgh noted. The job is just a two-day commitment each year (primary and general election) and you actually get paid for it.

Committee people are your neighbors. They’re regular folks like you who are elected by fellow neighbors to serve as a liaison between the voters in your division and their party’s elected officials.

This person can help you untangle your frustration with Philly politics, and even if that’s not a prob-

police spokesman Lt. John Stanford, who said the department will push the message about the value of PSA meetings. Real progress in 21st-century policing, he said, requires more than institutional reform; it begins at the ground level.

A PSA meeting is a one-hour commitment on a weeknight, and you won’t regret it—even if you

dislike the cops.

In fact, if you have a negative relationship with the police, that’s an even better reason to attend your PSA meeting. The Philly police want to hear your complaints, whether it’s about the petty theft of potted plants from your stoop or the cop you saw being too aggressive with a mentally challenged man outside the bodega.

“We’ve made it very clear that policing is not something we can do alone,” Stanford told PW. “To be very honest, a big part of that is we need... people to come out and actually express themselves if there are things they’re not happy about concerning the police officers. Instead of waiting for something big to blow up in the neighborhood, come to the meetings and express your concerns to the commanders who are there.”

It’s not all about grievances either. There’s a lot of good news shared at these meetings, and you’ll learn about plenty of other ways to get involved in your slice of the city. And if you’re into data, officers usually provide monthly crime stats for your PSA, including the number of 911 service calls made by you and your neighbors.

It’s no secret that police-community relations are strained across the country, and Philadelphia is no exception.

But the solution to day-to-day dust-ups between police officers and the public is not going to be found at occasional citywide forums, which are often disrupted by protests.

Go hyperlocal. Go regularly. Be angry, be honest, but have an open heart.

“There’s a lot of things—forums, briefings, et cetera—just pick one and go to it,” Thornburg said.

“Carve out an hour and a half on a Thursday night when one of these. You can head home and binge watch Netflix later.”

CRIME PREVENTION

e’re not going to waste your time with some listicle of New Year’s public safety tips. The Philadelphia Police Department, on both its website and social media handles, offers a plethora of crime-related lifehacks on topics from deterring home invasions to dealing with broken streetlights.

But if you really want make a difference in the safety of your family and your community and your city as a whole in 2017, make the monthly police-community meetings in your neighborhood a must on your calendar.

They’re called PSA meetings, or police service areas, which are neighborhood-sized chunks of larger police districts. To find your PSA, just go to the Philadelphia Police department’s website and enter your address to find your meeting location.

Relatively new to the scene, PSA meetings were launched under former Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey when he took the reigns of the department eight years ago. Unfortunately, they are not widely promoted. In fact, ask most people what a PSA is, and they’re likely to think of Smokey the Bear’s credo against forest fires.

But that’s going to change this year, according to

Suck it up and spend a little more to eat better, not workout

It beats out the overpriced personal trainer, gym membership and fitness machine the turn of a New Year insists you must have. That’s because putting good food in your body jumpstarts your metabolism even if you don’t pick up a single weight.

It’s what those same trainers and gyms won’t tell you because it’s money out of their pocket, but you should be more concerned with yours. Even inexpensive gyms like Planet Fitness preaches a $10 monthly plan, but taking that $10 instead to invest in fresh, organic fruits vegetables and whole grains ultimately pay dividends way more than any treadmill.

“The gyms are all going to be packed on Jan. 2 and that’s good and great and all, but year after year, it’s just not sustainable because you aren’t seeing immediate gains,” said Kevin Miller, a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) who served as the strength coach for the Philadelphia’s Major League Soccer franchise for seven seasons. Working with both professional athletes and everyday people, Miller—who pens a daily blog, kevinmillertraining.com—has seen the effects of putting good food in your body. “If you truly want to change your body composition, my advice to people is to set realistic goals and make sure your diet comes first.”

Basically, if you have the money for a monthly gym membership—which according to popular website Statistic Brain, estimates $67 monthly for the average Philadelphian—you have money to kickstart healthy eating habits. It’s hard if you’re used to ready made meals or your favorite takeout, but the joy that comes from preparing your own meals

outweighs the temporary dopamine fix from being a hamster on a treadmill.

“People always say that time is an issue as to the reason that they can’t eat well,” said Miller. “But there are meals you can make that you could be eating way before the pizza delivery guy shows up. There has never been a time in the health and fitness industry where more money has been spent on health and exercise equipment but at the same time people are also getting sicker. It’s because they aren’t putting the right nutrition in their body to best their best self.”

Some easy steps Miller suggests to kickstart getting on a strong realistic path?

Get a recipe book and map out meals you’d really like to try and purchase fresh ingredients to make them. “There are plenty of great diets out there with really good recipe books,” says Miller.

Surround yourself with a group of people that share similar interests.

“If you’re moderate in your plan, you probably don’t want to hang out with your friend who’s a gym rat,” said Miller. “At the same time you don’t want to always link up with that friend who’s okay with going out for dinners all the time either. Find someone that is a common balance.”

Buy a kettlebell. “It’s the most complete tool to stay in shape and there are a ton of great exercises you can do to burn through fat and shape your body,” says Miller.

“You see a lot of people with the right intentions but they just don’t have a roadmap to really ensure long terms gains,” continued Miller. “Sitting down and being honest with yourself in terms of time, commitment and how much you can afford all plays into how you’ll feel down the line. It’s important to hold yourself accountable first and in my opinion making the right choices with food is a much better, more gratifying way to go.”

baby to care for. And the older people, they are conservative, they do not want to take a bath with a stranger.”

So SarahCare offers a solution: Train women as home health aides and employ them to care for their own family members. They earn a living, elders receive loving and culturally appropriate care, and the women’s fluency in Arabic becomes an asset rather than a liability on the employment market.

Sharing a meal and conversation with Philadelphia’s Syrian and Iraqi refugees.

I

n the final, turbulent days of 2016, civilian families did their best to escape war-torn Syria, despite repeated attacks on an attempted “humanitarian corridor.” Celebrating the holidays in the U.S. felt surreal as the situation in Aleppo worsened.

Still, members of the city’s growing community of Syrian and Iraqi refugees came together to discuss the situation in the Middle East over a great meal at the Friends Center (15th and Cherry Sts.), thanks to a diverse coalition of local nonprofits, religious groups, and high school students sponsored by the Arabic cultural organization Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture (526 S. 46th St.).

Inside, a large meeting room bustles with chatter in Arabic and English while the music of renowned Lebanese composer Marcel Khalife plays. Kids pose with toys and props in a photo booth and decorate frames for their photos at an art table.

Hannah Erdogan, a junior at Pennsbury High School, and Hajar Mokhlis, a pharmacy graduate student at the University of the Sciences, volunteer as servers at a buffet table full of hummus, lentil soup, chicken biryani, and pastries, donated by Aya’s Café in Center City and Saad’s Halal Restaurant in West Philadelphia. Erdogan says she’s attended Al-Bustan’s cultural summer camp since childhood— her mother is from Egypt—and has come to love the sense of community connection and cultural awareness she’s found there.

SIXPACK OF THEWEEK As for Mokhlis, she tells me she’s here through her involvement with Penn’s Arab Student Society. She’s minoring in medical anthropology with the goal of joining Doctors Without Borders, the international nongovernmental organization that sends courageous doctors from around the world into East Aleppo.

MAKING A HOME “I would love to run a bookstore again,” says Mohammad Okab, who arrived from Iraq three years ago with his wife and their five children.

He explains that not long before he left, he owned a bookstore in Baghdad’s famed Mutanabbi Street literary district. A book lover more comfortable reading English than speaking it, Muhammad tells me over plates of hummus and lentil soup that he felt like he knew the United States through books and films even before he arrived. He grasps for Hemingway, which he’s read in Arabic translation: “The Sun Rises Too, yes?”

As much as he misses his vocation, though, for now he’s working on his English and looking for a job; his two oldest sons, now adults, support the family.

Work is one of the biggest challenges Syrian and Iraqi refugees face

upon arriving in the United States. Of course, there’s the language barrier— which children overcome far faster than adults—as well as vast cultural differences and a government bureaucracy full of confusing paperwork to navigate.

But the support new arrivals receive doesn’t always last long, so getting families on their feet with a steady income is a huge priority. Local nonprofits like Nationalities Service Center—another sponsor of this event—and the Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians do their best to connect willing workers with employers in need, but cultural and language issues complicate matters.

Shaymaa Mohsin, a tall, elegant woman with a bright smile who arrived from Iraq eight years ago, is doing her best to solve that problem.

Mohsin worked in Baghdad as an engineer and an interpreter, but today she is a marketer for SarahCare, a senior-care organization that offers daycare and home health assistance.

“In our culture,” she explains, “you would never put your grandmother in a nursing home. You would quit your job to care for her. Even cousins would do this. Women come here and they need a job to live, but they have a mother or grandmother and maybe a

Upstairs, volunteers inventory a huge roomful of donated clothing, bedding, winter gear, and pantry supplies. The walls are lined with tables stacked high with blankets, hats, and gloves, bags of rice, and large bottles of extra-virgin olive oil. “People gave in droves,” says Max Dugan of AlBustan. “It’s so much more than we expected.”

Ray Hill-Cristol, 17, and Eve Lukens-Day, 18, both seniors and leaders in the Human Rights Club at Germantown Friends School, said that a year ago their club decided to “adopt a family” of Syrian refugees.

“Our country’s interference is a huge part of the problem in Syria,” LukensDay says, “so we feel a responsibility to do something to help.”

She introduces me to two members of that family, Sam and his young daughter Rokaya. “Everything is so different here. They show us the way,” Sam says, referring to the students’ assistance with English-language paperwork like immigration forms and job applications. His teenage sons, Adnan and Abdullah, attend local high schools; while they’re still feeling shy about practicing their English with strangers, they’re learning quickly.

Back at the party downstairs, both boys help the younger children with their art projects. A musician begins handing out instruments for a drumming lesson, while an Arabic-speaking therapist leads adults in a discussion circle in one corner.

Nora Elmarzouky, who also works at Al-Bustan, adds that, in addition to work, the organization helps connect refugees with local residents who want to help. “People get lonely,” she says simply. “They often feel like they’re not welcome here. They need friends.”

As the city’s newest residents face winter in a cold and unfamiliar city, it’s clear that the warmth and joy so clearly felt here—the simple pleasures of good food, laughing children, conversation—are sorely needed. As an outspoken Islamophobe takes office as president and the destruction of war continues, Philadelphians from every background are quietly welcoming our Syrian and Iraqi neighbors.

New Year, New Beer A few new, cool brews to keep an eye on in 2017.

BAVARIA COMES TO PHILLY Imported German beer is often a dicey proposition because so many of the nation’s traditional styles—especially pils and Helles lager—are quick to deteriorate before they hit American shelves.

However, Liquid Projects, a new Brooklyn-based company, is giving it a try—and to be honest, the first batch it brought to Philly is mighty impressive. The company has put together a collection of styles from five separate German breweries under one brand name, Reinheits Boten, which translates roughly as “purity delivery.”

The samples I tried last week at Brauhaus Schmitz, the excellent German bar on South Street, were all quite fresh and included some unusual styles. Among them:

Riedenburger Organic Emmer Beer, made with a type of spelt that historians and archeologists believe is the first grain cultivated for beer and bread. It has a nutty, rustic character that is unique among German beer.

I recommend all of these beers, especially for those who are looking for something other than hopped-out IPAs. These styles emphasize malt, whose character is particularly overlooked in American craft beer circles.

But I wonder how long they’ll survive.

As I mentioned previously, artisan German beers—especially unpasteurized varieties like these—don’t always travel well.

Liquid Projects owner Lars Dahlhaus told me the beers are transported across the Atlantic in temperaturecontrolled containers, and that they’re pre-sold, which in theory means they move through distribution channels faster. The larger challenge, he said, was bringing competing breweries under the single Reinheits Boten brand together.

If his business plan works, look for other new collaborations throughout the year.

NEW DESTINATIONS

Zoller Hof Zwickel, an unfiltered lager whose smooth body and malty sweetness make it the perfect complement to those big Bavarian soft pretzels on the Schmitz menu.

A couple months ago, I mentioned more than a dozen new breweries were headed to the city. Unsurprisingly, the opening of many of them has been delayed for the usual issues: licensing, inspections, balky equipment, etc.

But several are now open, including:

Friedenfelser Zoiglbier, an old and rarely seen type of unfiltered lager whose roasted malt gives the beer an amber color. I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve tasted zoigl, which takes its name from the German word for the sign of a star (one which had a very similar look to the Star of David,

Brewery ARS, 1927 W. Passyunk Ave, South Philly. It opened the week before Christmas with limited hours, so check out Brewery ARS’ Facebook page or website before heading down Broad Street. It’s pouring two saisons and a porter (bring your growlers) and serves up some pretty good BBQ.

Wissahickon Brewery, 3705 W. Schoolhouse Lane, East Falls. It held a couple holiday open houses and doesn’t yet have regular hours, so consult its Facebook page for details.

This is a production brewery; don’t expect typical brewpub ambiance (or food), just yet.

Flying Fish Crafthouse, 1363 N. 31st St., Brewerytown. This spot opened with little fanfare just before the holidays. Located nearby the old Red Bell plant (nee F.A. Poth Brewery), it’s not actually a brewery. Instead, all of its beers are made over in Jersey by Garden State craft brewery. Among ales made exclusively for the taphouse: LoveFish, an abbey dubbel infused with cherries; and Duffified Ale, an English-style amber ale named after Brian Duffy of the cable TV show “Bar Rescue,” who also runs the kitchen.

“The parade has had a negative cloud for a while, but it’s still a big part of our community and our city,” said Orozco. “We are proud of who we are. We wanted to participate. The city of Philadelphia welcomed us and kept working with immigrants and we are very grateful for that. But we know that there is a larger issue a stigma, if you will, thanks to the things [Donald] Trump has said about the Mexican people.”

Still, the Carnavaleros march. Why? Because it’s business as usual.

“Our participation in the Mummers Parade for a second time, [to be honest], is because we are as excited this time as we were the last time,” said Orozco. “We learned a little bit more of how it is and how the Mummers managed it, and we are eager to do it again, and what we did last year we plan to do better. Everyone [in this troupe] is proud to be from Philly and we stayed in this country for a reason.

We wanted to better ourselves, better our families. That can be said for many of the people that march every year, no matter of what color they are.”

Still, strutting your stuff in a parade that has a checkered past of racist and sexist connotations attached to the aftermath of a presidential campaign proving that racism is still very

much alive and well in America takes serious moxie.

Mayor Kenney preached diversity prior to the 2017 edition of this year’s parade with the whole notion spearheaded by Chuck Tomasco, president of the Landi Comic Club who has been a Mummer for over 36 years.

“Listen, my arms are open. Everybody’s welcome,” Tomasco recently told the Daily News, referring to not just the Carnavaleros, but other ethnic Mummers groups and the popular Miss Fancy LGBT brigade. “We’ll take all of them. The parade is evolving.

They have every right to be in it. It’s a no-brainer.”

Passionate about the Parade For the Carnavaleros, the planning for their Mummers routine begins in April.

Originally, the group was skeptical about getting involved as their performance is a popular one in their native Mexico, which is supposed to honor Cinco de Mayo. However, Orozco said the group decided to put tradition aside and use the Mummers Parade as an opportunity to educate the community about Mexico’s rich heritage.

“Yeah, many of us were skeptical about doing it last year, even after being invited by the city,” Orozco said. “ Not because we didn’t want to we were honored, but because it is not part of our tradition. We do it to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, but we saw the importance of this event and to be apart of it was special to us. So by the time [the Mummers Parade] came around we actually had to [scale back] our numbers because we had a few hundred participants that wanted to take part, but we

were told by the city that we can’t have more than 150-200 in the Parade.”

Combined the Carnavaleros are well over 1,000 strong in Philadelphia and continue to grow according to Orozco who claims that what started off small, grew immensely courtesy of being accepted as a bona fide Mummers troupe.

“For us, its most important to participate, because here, the Mexican community has grown so much in the last 10 years in Philadelphia,” said Orozco. “This parade and how much we’ve grown in size points out just how much our group continues to evolve. So many people didn’t know about it, about us, and how much the Mexican population contributed to the city of Philadelphia. So we wanted to show our presence.”

She paused and added: “Look, we have to keep working together,” said Orozco. “I don’t think logistically it’s feasible to deport every [Mexican] from the United States so I don’t really by too much into what Trump is saying because it’s nonsense.

There is me and many like me who are citizens now, who have citizenship passports to be here. But at the same time we are going to stay true to our roots. That does not mean we are not American and that we represent the country as well. Look, we are here, we are working, we have families, and now we are working with you as well.

For us to be apart of this parade shows that we have started to disseminate or diminish that message. All we can do in the face of all this negativity is hope that the message spreads.”

PW’s Random Roundup Right Lock, Wrong Key: The latest on Philly’s housing crisis

J

ust before heading into 2017, two late-hour reports offered a stark reminder of the extent of Philadelphia’s housing crisis.

The first report, which arrived by way of Temple University Beasley School of Law and Community Legal Services (CLS), found that 9,000 affordable housing units are at risk of disappearing over the next 20 years due to “owner optout,” in which private owners decline to continue under contract in providing affordable units to Section 8 recipients.

In a separate research project, the Reinvestment Fund found that Philadelphia’s eviction rate was as much as seven times higher in certain neighborhoods than its foreclosure rate. And as PlanPhilly first reported, researchers at the fund believe that figure may even be understated because not all of the data can’t account for renters—especially ones who pay in cash.

The racial math of both studies suggests a disproportionate effect on poor communities of color. African Americans comprise nearly twothirds of those who live in these at-risk, projectbased housing units. Meanwhile, the eviction data showed that even when subsidizing based on various poverty levels, neighborhoods with an 80 percent black population suffered eviction rates five times higher than neighborhoods with a 10 percent black population population.

There are additional social factors, as well. Of the 21 properties with federal Section 8 housing assistance contracts that will expire by 2020, more than a quarter of them are located in sections of the city currently undergoing rapid gentrification.

“Loss of affordable housing affects entire communities, not just low-income individuals,” Rasheedah Phillips, a housing attorney with CLS, wrote in a statement. “Preserving economic and racial diversity in areas impacted by gentrification and redevelopment means increased access to opportunities in one’s own neighborhood, stable families, and integrated communities.”

Affordable housing researchers and CLS attorneys recommended that potential opt-out property owners provide “stronger, lengthier notice requirements to housing advocates, tenant associations, and the City itself.”

Recommendations for Philly’s eviction problem are far more complicated. Going into his second year, Mayor Jim Kenney will be getting his soda-tax-funded pre-K program off the ground, as well as making moves to rebuild the many of the city’s parks and recreation centers. For housing concerns, “The housing issue in Philadelphia is a threefold problem—affordability, income and age of housing stock,” Anne Fadullon, director of mayor’s Planning and Development Cabinet, wrote to PW. “In terms of rental housing we are focused on both preservation and new production of units.”

At the moment, the city has two Requests For Proposals (RFPs) out for developers: one for preservation of existing rental housing, and another for the development of new 4 percent tax credit deals. Fadullon anticipates issuing another RFP in late Spring to provide support for 9 percent tax credit projects.

Opinion: Unnecessary drama

As a former sports reporter that has been in many press boxes including the Eagles for various events, I’ll say this. To toss a reporter for disagreeing is insane. A press box isn’t an autonomous rule, and as long as rules are being followed per team and union guidelines, then this situation is overblown. Could the media have banded together to boycott in support of McLane? Sure. But what does that do besides create a rift and subsequent stress for sports editors reserving space, or waiting to post reports online. Insubordination for the sake of proving a brotherhood helps no one.

At the end of the day, specifically in this situation, people still gotta eat and editors are paying.

But while all the negativity surrounds Gordon and her decision to toss McLane, the missing piece here is the thin skin of Groen who took a non-issue to the top of the food chain, resulting in unnecessary drama. What possibly could McLane have said that was so egregious—beyond reports of McLane saying “shut up” which he denies—that would lead to this?

Sounds like the issue is putting personnel in the press box that don’t cry every time someone questions their authority.

n Sunday, the Eagles bounced Inquirer reporter Jeff McLane for getting into what’s been described as a “minor argument” with media relations coordinator Zach Groen.

Quick synopsis: McLane, who’s covered the Birds for the past eight seasons retorted a terse request from Groen to have the press box pipe down after a play on the field that sent the massive room above Lincoln Financial Field into a frenzy. McLane wasn’t a fan of Groen’s remarks and asked that if he had an issue for the two to step outside to discuss. They did, and 10 minutes later, security arrived alongside Eagles senior vice president of marketing, media and commiuncations (and former Inquirer VP, mind you) Anne Gordon who asked McLane to leave.

In the aftermath, much of the conversation has supported McLane and chastised the Eagles for making a situation deemed a non-issue, worse. A Daily News reporter told me that this was “crisis communications at it’s absolute worst,” as Gordon handled the situation like someone “completely unfamiliar” with the inner workings of a press box, going even a step farther in threatening to eject members of the media that objected to McLane’s dismissal.

How a kidney transplant made two friends inseparable

I

t’s been almost six years since Octavius Newman met Adam Teterus while working at Apple, solidifying a bond over a mutual love of comic books—spending hours discussing characters, artists and stories.

In December, a kidney was the ultimate payment of friendship.

“I have the best version of a bad situation,” said Octavius, who battled Stage 4 kidney disease, “I haven’t had much pain, there’s not much to complain about. I feel grateful, appreciative, blessed. Why did Adam do this for me? Because he’s my friend.”

In addition to comics, the two share an interest in social justice; having this similar knowledge in how comic book heroes could inspire people. Hopeful that other fans would be interested in exploring philosophy and politics through the lens of geek culture, they started the Comic Book Junto podcast. Through this project, they created an online community and further forged their bond of friendship. It was one afternoon when they met to record the podcast that Octavius disclosed that he had kidney disease and would need a transplant. The rest, it could be said, is history.

More important to the two of them is normalizing the experience. Talking about the exceptional nature of the operation, “Makes it feel like it’s ‘other’,” Octavius says, “It creates this scenario where it’s this special type of person. The list needs regular people, not superheroes.”

Currently there are over 93,000 people waiting for kidney donations, with the expected wait time ranging from 5-10 years. About 21 people die everyday waiting for an organ transplant but only 45 percent of Americans are registered organ donors and far fewer have looked into live donation.

“Before this, I didn’t even know what a kidney did,” Adam says, “and I certainly wouldn’t have pursued information about it.”

On Oct. 11, 2016, following a seven month long battery of tests, Adam’s left kidney (which he had nicknamed Lisa “Left Kidney” Lopes) was removed and placed in Octavius, alongside his other two kidneys. Yep, his originals were left intact, contrary to the expectations of nearly everyone they’ve told.

“So much of talking about this experience is debunking myths,” Adam explains, “[Mainly because] so many people assume things that aren’t true. They told me, ‘you know after this you can’t drink?’ One person even said I wouldn’t be able to walk up stairs again.”

Yet, within days of the surgery Adam was walking up flights of stairs, within two weeks he was back to work and now, 10 weeks out, has effectively returned to normal.

“People tell me, ‘You’re a hero, I could never do that’ and that’s a problem,” Adam says. “There are thousands of people waiting on the list for donations last I heard” and they need normal, everyday people to step up.

The comparison of Octavius and Adam to their comic book idols are readily apparent. They have a Power Man and Iron Fist dynamic, as Octavius is a tall, married Black man of faith and Adam is “none of those things.” They could also be compared to Superman and Batman, taking different tactics to meet the same end. Or it could be even more simple.

“I have great conversations with this person and I didn’t want that to go away,” Adam said.
