Pennsylvania Coast Day

D

iscover Pennsylvania’s coastal connection at this year’s Coast Day, hosted by the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary and Philadelphia Water. The 17th annual event showcases the portion of the Delaware Estuary— which stretches as far north as Trenton, N.J., to as far south as Lewes, Delaware—that ows through Philadelphia. “Over ďŹ ve million people live in the land surrounding the Delaware Estuary, and it’s home to over 130 different kinds of ďŹ sh and wildlife,â€? says Christopher Anderson, watershed program manager for Philadelphia Water. “For me, what makes the Delaware Estuary so signiďŹ cant is how it connects all of us. Within the stretch of 133 miles, there are numerous cities, like Philadelphia, but also smaller towns and farms, each using over 200 rivers and streams for water.â€?

This year’s Coast Day will include free boat rides aboard the Patriot, row-boating and swan pedal boating near the Spruce Street Harbor Park, model boat racing, ďŹ shing pole casting courtesy of the Mid-Atlantic Youth Anglers & Outdoors Program, a water knowledge scavenger hunt and much more.

Local participating organizations, such as the

Independence Seaport Museum, will open their doors for events like a knot tying class from the local Coast Guard Auxiliary.

There will also be free shuttle service to and from Walnut Plaza and Fairmount Water Works.

At Water Works, there will be live freshwater mussel demonstrations, a tour of a 1970s RV decorated with moss, and a Philly Fun Fishing Fest. An art installation titled “Urban Sea,� by artist Melissa D’Agostino, will also be on exhibit.

The Philly Fun Fishing Fest, which will take place from 7 to 11 a.m. at the Schuylkill Banks, is a “catch and release� event, so you will not be able to bring your catches home, but there will be prizes provided by Dick’s Sporting Goods and Plano Tackle. “The overarching goal of Coast Day,� Anderson says, “is to connect citizens to our diverse network of waterways in Southeastern PA,� and the “role the Delaware, Schuylkill, Tacony, Wissahickon and other streams play in our everyday lives and in the history of the city,� is not always apparent in large cities, like Philadelphia, and this event plans on bridging that gap. —AJA BEECH

Love on the Ropes Hanging with Fringe Performers Sean Green & Garrett Olthuis.

A

pole dancer collaborating with a ballet dancer? It must be Fringe Festival.

Balancing atop a square that’s about an inch wide and dangling from the second-floor ceiling of Flaunt Fitness studio in South Philly, Sean Green and Garrett Olthuis look perfectly in sync. But Fringe actually marks their first full performance together.

Green has competed and performed as an aerial artist for just two years but already has the titles of 2015 Atlantic Regional Men’s Pole Champion and 2012 Mr. Gay Philadelphia under his belt.

Olthuis is a UArts alum. Graduating with a BFA in classical ballet, he’s graced the stages in productions of everything from Les Miserables to Naked Boys Singing.

Each planned a debut at Fringe this year but decided to join forces. “Garrett

had planned to do his own Fringe show, and I asked him to be in my Fringe show,” explains Green. “And he responded, ‘Don’t you remember I was doing my Fringe show?’ And I was like ‘Oh...well let’s just do it together.’ And we talked about our ideas and they were similar, so it’s nice to see it evolve into something else together.”

In preparation for their “Grounded Autonomy” aerial performance, which takes place this weekend at Brewerytown’a Glass Factory, the four-person SkyDance Philly ensemble (Green and Olthuis plus two supporting female cast members) were practicing six nights a week, mostly at Flaunt. It’s above Dom’s Auto Body on a residential block of Newbold rows, where a narrow dark staircase leads up to the fitness studio: a room filled with yoga balls, hanging panels of silk and many, many shiny stainless steel poles.

Those poles aren’t just for strippers or soccer moms with Groupons eager to try something naughty. Men, it turns out, are flocking to the pole, too.

Green, who is also a trainer at 12th Street Gym, says his classes are divided equally between the genders and that the popularity has spread through word of mouth.

Though you might assume men would have an advantage in a performance art that relies so heavily on upper body strength, Green and Olthuis say that’s wrong. “Most of us [men] lack the flexibility,” explains Olthuis. “The girls were teaching us this move last week, where you, like, roll over your hip, and he [Sean] and I both were, like, screaming. When I hold my leg like this, I have nothing here!

Where you have that extra layer of fat, no matter how skinny a girl is, there’s some.

But for me, that’s just bone, that hurts.”

Grounded Autonomy tells the story of young love, a concept both Olthuis and Green were each drawn to. “It’s sort of our two characters, who are ourselves essentially, and, we wanted to have sort of like our consciences or our best girlfriends…

I have a ton of best girlfriends so they represent that for me, that shoulder to cry on, but the girl that’s going to smack you when you’re being ridiculous,” says Olthuis.

To create the foursome dynamic of friends aiding the lovers, the duo brought in the balance square, a device which hangs from a center hook and radiates outward to chains affixed to each corner. With the four performers precariously upon the piece, precision plays a huge role, as each person’s weight must be strategically balanced against the others. The apparatus simultaneously moves both up and down and side to side. “We

got the square so we could work four of us in the air together. I’ve never done that before, Sean’s never done that before. We’ve all done doubles before.

We’ve all done hammock before. We’ve all done silk before. We’ve all done pole before. But this is very different.”

Aerial artistic performances seem to be a trend in 2016. Earlier this summer, Beck Epoch twirled over the Schuylkill and under the Strawberry Mansion Bridge, while Tangle Movement Arts presented the 10-women RetroAct earlier in the year. Green says these other acts aren’t competition, they’re opportunity. “I have personally found it’s hard to perform in most spaces because people are nervous that we’re going to hurt ourselves and sue them. So those liability issues, people still don’t trust you because they haven’t seen you do it in person.”

Then there’s the not-so-incidental matter of ceiling strength. Before the group performs, it must first get approval from the building’s structural engineer. They’ve also honed their own rigging skills, with Green interning in a residency program at the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts and a workshop with Cirque du Soleil. “They gave me tons of advice to let me know what I had planned wasn’t actually the safest, so we went back and changed it all so now our space is super sound and it’s ready for the next set of performers coming in.”

A few places, including Franky Bradley’s in Center City, have allowed the team to hook their equipment in the ceilings, but other places remain reluctant. Green has his eye on one place in particular: Midtown’s Voyeur Nightclub.

“The owner of Voyeur said no, only because they have those chandeliers, so they don’t want us to bring down the chandeliers,” says Green. Olthuis interrupted: “I need to be on a chandelier, like, it’s on my dream list, like, where I wear crystals. You can see that vision, right?”

Meanwhile, even as their Fringe Arts show represents the innocence of young love, Olthuis and Green concede there is a certain sex appeal of their craft.

“People are always nervous because no matter what, it’s always going to be sexualized,” Olthuis says. “But then I look at this show and it’s much different, it’s much more refined, it’s much more a sweet performance where you’re just looking at how much strength someone has rather than the sexuality of it. Being naked is nothing for us, we’re ending the show pretty much in the nude.”

“Well not totally naked,” Green says.

“My parents will be there.”

sk FringeArts honcho Nick Stuccio about the differences between 2016’s Fest and the year previous, and he—a former dancer—beams. “Last year we had a lot of spoken word stuff, while for this year, yes, we do seem to be focused on the nonverbal—movement, dance and all things musical,” he says with a laugh. “We have outside-of-the-box new musical treasures such as Stew and Reggie Wilson, and we have movement from the likes of Nichole Canuso and Geoff Sobelle who have been with us from the start.” With that enthusiasm, here’s a tight list of FringeArts faves.

rebel who wasn’t necessarily about changing the world, but figuring out the world for himself. And he wasn’t consistent or even-keeled. Depending on how mad he was that day or happy he was, he let you have THAT. That to me is a great rock n’ roller—not this guy who has become a nice symbol of ‘Great Black Moments in History’ where Ken Burns’ music pops up in the background. The James Baldwin that I loved and discovered was a freak who spoke of race, class and sexuality in raw ways that made all people feel uncomfortable. We’re rescuing him from that musty museum.” Give that a Baldwin rap a backbeat and that’s Stew’s thing.

Stew + Heidi Rodewald: Notes of a Native Song (Wilma Theater, 265 S. Broad Street, September 8-11) For their co-presentation between the Wilma and FringeArts, new wave blues storyteller/guitarist Stew and multi-instrumentalist Rodewald do much the same thing on Notes that they did with the massively autobiographical, Tony Awardwinning song cycle Passing Strange. “It’s not LIKE a concert, it IS a concert,” says Stew, with a big laugh of taking the nowinstitutional work and words of novelist/activist James Baldwin and making him dangerous again through live song and multi-media staging. “Everything we do and write still results in a song rather than theater,” he says, considering his past work as frontman for the funk-punk The Negro Problem.

“Now, there’s just more trappings. We keep pushing more ‘concert’ onto the theatrical stage. The concert is the theater.

To us, the phrase ‘musical theater’ is redundant.” Before you think of that as blasphemous, Stew goes on to say that there’s nothing as radically theatrical as the Beatles live at Hollywood Bowl or John Coltrane at the Village Vanguard—a proposition whose drama I completely buy. “There’s no character in traditional theater as dangerous as Keith Richards. We don’t want music to be the slave of some lame storyline.”

So what then of Baldwin, a gay, black novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, and social critic who spoke of nothing else but uncomfortable truths—he was once dangerous before he became a lionized man of letters. “Exactly, we want to rescue him from respectability before it’s too late,” says Stew, considering the now-nobility of the man behind stirring, seminal works such as Notes of a Native Son (1955), Giovanni’s Room (1956),The Fire Next Time (1963) and The Devil Finds Work (1976). “America has a way of making our heroes safe.

He’s like a chest of drawers whose words people pull out when they think it applies to their movement. But, for me, he was an individual who always spoke his mind—just like a true rock n’ roller.”

Like William S. Burroughs, Baldwin was not only an adventurous, experimental writer whose opinions were as incendiary as his fact. Molly Lang/Queen Mab’s Men: They’ll Be Callin’ Us Witches (The Arcadia Stage at Arden Theatre, 40-50 N. Antidotal evidence Searching for solace, one performer dances to tackle the perils of addiction.

D

uring her career as a dancer, Carolyn Marcinkiewicz has often needed to nurse her bloody feet. While tending to those extremities has become a customary practice, the 34-year-old finds herself today, having to heal in other ways. Four months ago, she lost her brother, Danny to addiction.

As part of FringeArts Festival, she’ll call on her dance craft to be a balm, when she and fellow South Philadelphians, Leslie Davidson and Jessica Noel present “Our Poison” at Philly PACK. “It’s going to be cathartic in some ways,” the Queen Village resident says of the 30-minute show, one of 17 South Philly-based creations that will help the FringeArts to mark its 20th celebration. “I might cry while performing because it’s still often incredibly emotional when facing it all.”

She and her peers will address addiction through their dance theater project, with Marcinkiewicz noting their movements will work to reflect the toll addiction takes on relationships. For one scene, she’ll recreate the moment when she first learned her sibling was missing.

Along with the intensely emotional qualities of the premiere, which will run on Fridays and Saturdays through Sept. 24, Marcinkiewicz expects for her involvement to strengthen the commitment to dance that has helped her to become a commended professional.

“Of course, with my brother’s death, it’s been a wild ride to go through the grieving process with my art form as a means to comprehend the setback,” she says.

“When I look beyond that component and focus on the opportunity that we have to be a bit of a comfort provider to people and the chance that I have to represent Philly PACK and work with two amazing women, I feel really fortunate.”

As a tap and hip hop instructor at the space, Marcinkiewicz loves interacting with children, dubbing them “a blast,” and discusses how dance, through shows and movies, has become even more of a reminder that hard work pays off for loyal practitioners. With only a day remaining until she debuts her very personal performance, Marcinkiewicz says that she knows no matter the challenge and regardless of the time that she will need to recover from external or internal struggles, dance will never fail her.

“I love what I do. I make that pretty obvious with each class or opportunity because this is what drives me. This is what,

aside from my connection to my family, goes a long way to defining me.”

It’s been three decades of dancing for the Northeast Philly native who began taking lessons when she was just 4 years old. From the start, she says she was dedicated to a rigorous practice schedule. “I absolutely loved that sense of sacrifice that it was all going to take. When you’re young, you definitely are aware of the sparkles, the glitter, the costumes, the

music, and the environment, but I was able to see much farther beyond all of that because I knew I wanted dance to be a huge part of me, not a passing fancy or something that had competition for my attention.”

Following enrollment at Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls, Marcinkiewicz transferred to the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts.

Although she toyed with thoughts of

heading to New York City after graduation, Marcinkiewicz decided to stay in Philadelphia, attending University of the Arts for college, and putting down deeper Philly roots..

“I’ve really enjoyed being an active person through this city,” says Marcinkiewicz. “Especially when you think about South Philly, it’s easy to appreciate how fortunate it is to be here at this point in its growth.”

Along with Philly PACK, Marcinkiewicz has garnered praise through other dance and fitness endeavors, such as the SHARP Dance Company, Sweat Fitness’ group fitness and personal instruction, and at Mario Lanza Park, giving her a following and celebrity as a local health enthusiast.

When not in class or on stage, Marcinkiewicz says she can usually be found spending time with her fiancé, Alex and 7-yearold son Jacob.

“It’s really tough, almost impossible, to find South Philly unappealing,” Marcinkiewicz says, having returned to the neighborhood a second time and residing in Queen Village now for more than four years. “I find it comforting and inspirational, especially down here because there’s an emphasis on creativity and responsibility to others.”

That latter part of life as a local certainly comes through in “Our Poison,” the successor to Philly PACK’s Radioheadinspired Fringe offering “Sit Down. Stand Up.” Tabbed as a chance to “experience the many faces of addiction through the struggles of three individuals,” the work will certainly not lack for musical contributions, as The Beatles, The White Stripes, Nina Simone, and Radiohead, among others, will have their catalog included. The theme of compassion is particularly important for Marcinkiewicz, who hopes that audiences will begin to see that victims of addiction are not statistics to use to make people feel better about their own dilemmas, but are missed loved ones whose absences leave lasting voids.

“I dearly miss my brother,” she says, adding that his humor included a willingness to let everyone know that he taught her everything she knows. “I look forward to seeing how I’ll pull everything together. It’s all still so fresh, so I know the emotions will run high.”

Grey Lodge Celebrates 20 Years T

here’s not much unusual about some beer drinking and a walk down memory lane to celebrate the 20th anniversary of anything.

“I wanted to be able to drink Yards at my bar. I honestly didn’t think there was going to be that many new beers,” Scotese said.

But he perhaps intuitively tapped into something that was to become very big.

Philadelphia was on the cusp of the craft beer boom at the time. Yards had opened a brewery a year earlier. They were the first company to start brewing beer for distribution in Philadelphia since Schmidt’s, which went out of business in 1987.

As other new labels soon followed Yards onto the burgeoning market, craft beer bars opened in Old City, Fairmount and other neighborhoods. But the Northeast remained virgin territory. Scotese likes to note that, were the Northeast its own city, it would rank as the third-largest in Pennsylvania. For years to follow, nobody seemed to pick up his lead, leaving the Grey Lodge alone to serve a massive territory.

The bar didn’t change much aesthetically over time. After about five years, Scotese had saved enough “retained earnings”—about $500—to re-tile the men’s bathroom. He enlisted the help of a friend and art teacher, Peggy, who had a kiln and had just bought letter stamps at a yard sale.

They used the stamps to produce ceramic tiles with famous beer quotes from sage historical figures like Ben Franklin and Abraham Lincoln. Scoats used his cash to buy blue and black tiles that Peggy convinced him to smash into random pieces. They affixed the pieces to the walls in swirling patterns and plugged beer bottle caps into the grout to fill the gaps.

Then they did the women’s bathroom.

Peggy passed away in 2003, but Scotese has resumed his tile work in recent months. There’s a new wall-size deer logo, perfect for photo ops. Other mosaics depict the Beatles drinking Pilsners at the bar alongside characters from Futurama and a rendering of “Santa Ed,” a longtime regular who passed last December.

Like Peggy, others have made similar behind-the-scenes contributions, notably Patrick McGinley, a former bartender who became a partner in the business in 2004.

While patrons from the Ave Tav days will probably recognize the well-worn yet resilient wooden bar rail—“If you scratch that wood, within a few days it will go back to (look) like nothing happened,” Scotese said—there’s a lot of new-fangled technology, too.

The wifi works great as long as not too many people log on at the same time, the owner insists. And cellphone users get a great signal in the bar, as long as they don’t have Verizon or AT&T as a carrier.

“Sprint and T-Mobile work great,” Scotese said.

“We’ve always been a little bit hightech. We may have had the first bar website. But we actually didn’t get greylodge. com at first. We couldn’t afford to get that for another two years.”

The owner attributes the Lodge’s sustainability to its conservative approach to growth. Whereas other new ventures often overextend, take on excessive debt and fail, Scotese managed to pay off the mortgage after about 10 years. And while the bar remains an independent operation, Scotese and other partners have opened two other bars.

In 2010, he and Patrick McGinley converted the former Blue Ox Brauhaus in Fox Chase into Hop Angel, a bar and restaurant specializing in German beers and fare. Last year, Scotese and Troy Everwine opened Sawtown Tavern in Tacony.

“Grey Lodge is a beer bar where we rotate draft beers nonstop,” Scotese said.

“With Sawtown, we wanted to do something different and we have beers brewed by local breweries for us, so we have house beers on tap. We work with breweries to develop the recipes.”

Scotese openly muses about the day he will leave the bar business behind and tackle other projects, but he has no timeline for that. For now, he still enjoys going to work almost every day.

“Grey Lodge is an awesome bar. I love to hang there and it’s the main place I’m at,” he said. “It’s been a fun ride and I still show up five to seven days a week.”

Lucky Chops at WCL

W

hen a video showing one of the brass band’s many performances at NYC subway stations suddenly went viral, you could say Lucky Chops got lucky.

The six-minute video, uploaded to YouTube in early 2015, is a rendition of the six-piece NYC-based outfit’s “Funkytown/I Feel Good” medley. The video, which was filmed by a random passerby, is of standard cell phone quality, but still captures the relentless energy and one-of-a-kind charisma that the band pours into every live show.

“Through that just came all of these inquiries, like ‘Can you play at my birthday party?

Can you play at my wedding? Can you do this?

Can you do that?’” recalls Joshua Gawel, Lucky Chops’ trumpeter and native of Douglassville, PA. In a week, Gawel says the band went from about 3,000 Facebook fans to 40,000. Today, the number is at nearly half a million.

“I’m super grateful that it happened,” Gawel reflects. “It was bizarre. I never expected it.”

With roots in LaGuardia High School in NYC, Lucky Chops has been around in one form or another for about a decade. Gawel joined the band in 2014 after graduating from the Manhattan School of Music, where he met Lucky Chops trombonist Josh Holcomb and baritone saxophonist Leo P. Now, the band (which also consists of tenor saxophonist Daro Behroozi, drummer Kevin Congleton, and Raphael Buyo on the sousaphone) is gaining buzz for their undeniable knack for putting intriguing spins on covers as well as composing impossibly upbeat original arrangements.

One notable cover is the Lucky Chops version of Adele’s “Hello,” which was released in late 2015. In a beautifully shot video, the band performs the song in front of a spectacular view of the NYC skyline as the sun sets on a chilly day. Despite a lack of lyrics and vocals, the group’s rendition manages to be as emotionally gripping as the original while conveying a hauntingly triumphant quality, pronounced during the song’s climax by Gawel’s soaring trumpet.

While “Hello” has the potential to move you to tears, most of the band’s catalog is brimming with buoyant energy and backed by the Lucky Chops philosophy that “positive music can change the world.”

“In this world, with everything that’s happening, it’s nice to just play some fun music for people who want to dance and escape,” Gawel says. “We’re going for the party when you come to our show. Definitely positive, happy thoughts when you think of Lucky Chops.”

It’s an attitude that’s obvious in the original songs that Lucky Chops has released in the past year, like “Best Things,” which would make a decent soundtrack to every good dream you’ve

ever had, and the aptly titled “Buyo,” which reels you in with a groovy bass line (booming from Buyo’s tuba) then gradually explodes with an uncontainable sax solo, delivered by the flashy, pompadour-sporting Leo P. When it comes to composing songs, Gawel says the members of Lucky Chops draw from a wide range of musical influences.

“Some of the other guys were really influenced by jazz growing up; myself, not so much,” Gawel explains. “[Buyo] loves Taylor Swift while Leo is really into hip-hop. Daro has his own thing as far as the world music that he listens to. It’s definitely a variety and I think that’s what makes it interesting.”

While Gawel says the group finds common ground in genres like rock and funk, he borrows a quip from his bandmate to sum up the sonic diversity of the situation.

“This is what Leo says: If Lucky Chops had lyrics, there’s no way that we would all be in the same band together,” Gawel laughs.

Personally, Gawel is influenced by music with strong vocalists, citing Sia, Elton John, and The Beatles as artists he’s particularly into at the moment. Bearing a fair share of responsibility for the melodic side of Lucky Chops, he finds familiarity with pop vocals helpful when coming up with his parts.

“I’m trying to emulate a singer, not really a trumpet player, in a sense,” Gawel says.

Lucky Chops put out an album titled NYC in 2015 and Gawel says he hopes a new EP will be recorded and released in the near future. Until then, fans can expect the collective to continue to put out occasional singles.

Last time Lucky Chops electrified World Café Live, it marked the first time the band sold out a venue outside of NYC. Considering the group’s building momentum, it’s easy to imagine history will repeat itself when Lucky Chops returns this Tuesday as part of their 2016 world tour.

Amos Lee brings ‘Spirit’ to Philly

W

hen Philly bred singer-songwriter Amos Lee was recording his first, self-titled studio album, he had a prophetic moment with legendary drummer James Gadson, who played on the record. The masterful, percussionist pulled the young singer aside and said, “Never let them break your spirit.” Lee has carried that moment with him throughout his career—and when he sees storm clouds overhead— he remembers the sage counsel of his friend.

“I always think about him [Gadson] when things are hard, if I’m on the road, or struggling with my music,” Lee explains. “It’s like keep going, keep writing, keep playing, and keep doing what you’re doing.”

For more than a decade Lee has persevered. By doing so, he has soothed us with his soulful, melodic voice, all while inspiring us to travel along with him and lose ourselves on the journey. He heeded Gadson’s advice, and we thank Lee for that, because he evolved from a kid playing acoustic sets at Philly’s Tin Angel to headlining a show at the Academy of Music on Sept. 11.

He’s a musician whose metamorphosis is full of risks and pleasant rhythmic surprises. The evidence: his first self-produced and sixth studio album possessing the name of the one thing he has never lost—Spirit.

Spirit showcases Lee’s versatility and imagination as an artist as he pulls on R&B, Latin, and gospel undertones to achieve a poignant sound that is robust and didactic. To accomplish this, he first became the lead visionary for the project. This was a role he was more than prepared to take on after working with notable producers Joey Burns of Calexico on 2011’s Mission Bell and Jay Joyce (Little Big Town, Eric Church) on 2013’s Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song.

“I felt ready to produce, especially being part of a band where my role is sometimes being a facilitator and a producer too,” he says. “I thought it was a good time. I figured if I want to produce records in the future, which is something I would like to do, why not start with my own.”

Second, Lee was tasked with assembling the right musicians to form a dynamic rhythm section that could unify the modern sounds with the traditional instrumentation he wanted to explore on the album.

At a performance by the Robert Glasper Trio in Philly, Lee was captivated by the musicality of drummer Mark Colenburg who agreed to come on board for the project. He also acquired bassist Adam Blackstone, who has played alongside artists like Jay Z, Al Green, and Justin Timberlake.

With these musicians in his corner, Lee was able to give listeners a new take on his classic singer-songwriter style, which is best seen in the album’s first single “Vaporize.”

“Musically, the idea for the song was one of my more galvanizing moments,” he explains. “I had this idea for the song [“Vaporize”], which I wrote on an acoustic guitar, but I wanted to approach it differently. I was listening to a lot of music by [hip-hop artist] ScHoolboy Q at the time, and I wanted to incorporate the type of rhythmic production that was happening in ScHoolboy.

“I was super stoked with the way the song came out. I was excited to experiment, and to see something I envisioned in my mind come together in a way that was really organic and cool. I know the guys [Colenburg and Blackstone] knew what I was going for. We all spoke the same language.”

In many ways, Spirit is the perfect marriage of Lee’s musical experimentation and acoustic soul sensibilities. With tracks like “Spirit,” “One Lonely Night,” and “Lost Child,” Lee showcases the gospel, folk tones that listeners have come to know, value, and appreciate about his music.

“I love gospel music so much,” Lee says. “I listen to a ton of it. I don’t really think of it as having this super, heavy philosophical concept in my music, I think of it as [having] themes that we can all sort of relate to. It’s powerful to me, and you can feel it really deeply. I don’t know if you have to necessarily share the faith with someone to share the feeling.

“For me, it’s always been about bringing people together—connecting people through the music and through the love of that spirit.”

y husband left the picture recently, and I’m now a single mom supporting an infant in Toronto. I work a retail job and am drowning financially. I hooked up with a guy I met on Tinder, and I didn’t warn him that I’m still nursing because I didn’t even think of it. Luckily, he really got off on it—so I was spared the awkwardness of “Eww, what is coming out of your tits?!” Afterward, he joked about there being a market for lactating women in the kink world. My questions: If I find someone who will pay me to suckle my milk, is that prostitution? And if I advertise that I’m willing to be paid, can I get into trouble for that? “But sex work is legal for everyone in Canada, new moms included. The new sex work laws here—the 2014 ‘Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act,’ an Orwellian title for a draconian piece of legislation—prohibit sex work close to where minors might be. So if she’s engaging in sex work close to kids, she is risking criminal charges.”

No one wants sex work going on around minors, of course—on or around minors— so that’s not what makes the ‘Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act’ an Orwellian piece of bullshit.

Laws regulating sex work in Canada were rewritten after Terri-Jean Bedford, a retired dominatrix and madam, took her case to the courts. The Supreme Court of Canada ultimately ruled—unanimously—that criminalizing sex work made it more dangerous, not less, and consequently the laws on the books against sex work violated the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. But instead of decriminalizing sex work, Parliament made it legal to sell sex in Canada but illegal to buy it, aka the “end demand” approach to stamping out sex work.

“By making a sex worker’s body the scene of a crime,” writes sex worker and sex-workers-rights activist Mike Crawford, “the ‘end demand’ approach gives cops full license to investigate sex workers, leaving sex workers vulnerable to abuse, extortion, and even rape at the hands of the police.”

Chaisson, who helped bring down Canada’s laws against sex work, doesn’t think selling suckling will get you in trouble, TIT. “But Children’s Aid Society (CAS) would investigate if they felt there was a child in need of protection,” said Chaisson. “So the safest thing would be for her to stick to out calls only and to keep the work away from kids and anywhere they might be.”
