he folks gathered in Philadelphia on Sept.

17, 1787, were pretty darn clear in that First Amendment they signed: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Still, in the years since, plenty of smaller religious groups in the United States have had to fight loudly to make sure they actually receive the same freedom, respect and legal rights that larger religions are accustomed to enjoying.

Hence the annual Philadelphia Pagan Pride Day, which returns to Clark Park in West Philly on Sat., Sept. 5 in conjunction with the nationwide Pagan Pride Project.

The festival, now in its third year at this location, will include lectures and workshops on paganism, live music, flow-arts performances, face painting, vendors, a drum circle, and three rituals, including a harvest ritual to celebrate the autumn equinox. All who are interested are invited to the free, family-friendly event.

Pagans identify an all-pervasive divinity in nature itself, with equality of the sexes reflected in the worship of gods and goddesses. “Our rituals, ceremonies, crafts and offerings show an ap-

preciation and desire for harmony, connection, a respect for the earth and for the knowledge and ways of our ancestors,” says Jess Marino, owner of the healing arts studio Space 2033, who will teach “Intro to Scrying” at the event. On Pagan Pride Day, she says, “we can really celebrate and honor that together.”

Specific spiritual traditions represented at Pagan Pride Day will include Wicca, Druidry, Thelema, Therian, Manx Heathenry, German Heathenry, Urglaawe and others. Regional pagan groups set to attend include Assembly of the Sacred Wheel, Inner Path, Thelesis Oasis, Red Oak Grove, Kindred of Mann, The Troth’s Pennsylvania and Delaware stewardships, and Distelfink Sippschaft.

The event is free, but donations are requested, including canned food for the Mazzoni Center Food Bank, cat supplies for Forgotten Cats, and books with pagan themes for Books Through Bars, and the In-Reach Heathen Prison Services.

Tired Hands MagoTago. Labor Day is the day when we

celebrate the American worker, the labor movement, and how awesome it is to bust your butt for 60 hours a week so your company’s owner can make more an hour than you do in a week. It’s also a great reason to drink beers that kinda-sorta remind you of working hard. With a name like Tired Hands, pretty much anything these local brewers make fits the bill; we’re going with the MagoTago, because the weather is still hot and MagoTago is an absurdly refreshing mango IPA. The pungent aroma teases what you’ll get with each sip: luxurious juiciness, fruity mango and perfectly balanced bitterness. If early 20th-century Americans had this to go home to, they’d have been too distracted by its awesomeness to bother forming unions. Get some at Monk’s Cafe or right at the brewery.

Evil Genius Stacy’s Mom. It’s probably not unfair to call Henry Ford an evil genius. He helped revolutionize the way factory workers did their job and was renowned for paying high wages—he’s practically a Labor Day hero in that regard—but he was also a raging anti-Semite who helped put out publications outlining all the ways he hated Jews—and even sent Hitler birthday gifts.

Absolutely none of this has anything to do with beer by Evil Genius, of course: It’s just a really awkward way to stick with this week’s Labor Day theme.

21st Amendment Brew Free or die. When Prohi-

bition was passed on January 17, 1920, it did more than outlaw alcohol in the U.S. It led to the closure of thousands of breweries, distilleries and saloons, which meant the elimination of tens of thousands of jobs, including all the barrel makers, truckers and other laborers who supported the industry. It was a colossal blow to American workers. Not even the taste of 21st Amendment Brewery’s Brew Free or Die IPA would have lifted their spirits, even if all those unemployed workers enjoyed the spicy pine, soft citrus and grassy bitterness of this easy drinking IPA. They’d love the clean, dry finish and strong malty backbone—it would remind them of a good amber ale—but they’d hate being unable to pay their bills. Thankfully, Prohibition was repealed in 1933 by the 21st Amendment, allowing this beer to be available to you at The Pour House Westmont.

Grassroots limoncello IPA. The early history of

the American labor movement essentially began as a series of grassroots efforts by workers, who came together to form the brotherhoods, federations and labor unions that eventually grew powerful enough to fight for the rights of laborers across the nation. If you get paid vacation time, thank those early pioneers, maybe by sending them some Limoncello IPA. It’s made by Grassroots, which is really just the name Hill Farmstead uses when collaborating with other breweries (in this case, Denmark’s Mikkeller and England’s Siren).

Bright hops battle with candy sweetness, and both are cut with zesty sour lemon that makes this more refreshing than a 9 percent ABV beer should be. You’ve never had a beer like this, but you can at Iron Abbey.

4 Hands Resurrected IPA. They say four hands

are better than two, a saying dating from the early U.S. labor movement that referred to the push to ensure factories had adequate staffing, thus helping to maintain worker safety. Absolutely none of the preceding sentence is true, but still: Why not enjoy a beer from the St. Louis brewery 4 Hands the week of Labor Day? Resurrected IPA, aka Resurrection, is hopped up with one of today’s hottest hop strains, Mosaic. It’s popular for a reason, too. Huge tropical fruit notes dominate the aroma and flavor, with pineapple, mango and grapefruit rind all making a showing in each sip. The quest for a German cheesesteak Our ongoing attempt to ascertain whether any place in the world has a sandwich that can truly match up to Philly’s most famous.

ver the past several years, we’ve occasionally on this page asked the question: What do they eat instead of cheesesteaks in other countries? Along the way, we’ve tasted several notable international variations on the great Philadelphia sandwich; the epic Portuguese franceshina and the deeply soulful Uruguyan chivito come immediately to mind.

While traveling last week through southwestern Germany on a wine-tasting expedition, I found myself captivated one night in Rheingau by the glorious sight of a grill loaded up with bratwurst. Not any old brats, of course. No, these were what all sausages want to be when they grow up. They were handmade from white boar—specifically, from an animal that had just recently been hunted by our host, Joachim Flick, owner of the amazing winery that bears his name. Seasoned simply, slipped into stupendously snappy casings and grilled over an open flame, these were the sausages that I’d imagine will await me one day after I pass through the pearly gates into the great all-you-can-eat buffet in the sky.

After several days worth of such spectacular meat-and-sausage culture—and it wasn’t just the boar; I also swooned over the spiessbraten at Weingut Mussler (pictured), which consisted of thin layers of pork grilled on a spit with onions and doused with Riesling—it finally occurred to me that I hadn’t seen a German equivalent to the cheesesteak. Was there some sort of sausage-and-cheese sandwich,

perhaps, that I’d simply missed out on spotting over the course of my time in the country?

Arriving back home, I turned to one of the likeliest experts of German/Philly culinary translation: Jeremy Nolen, chef and owner of Brauhaus Schmitz on South Street. He, too, found it a stumper: “I can’t really think of a German sandwich that would exactly replicate a Philly cheesesteak.” How about kinda-sorta?

“Braumeister steak at Wursthaus is kind of like a steak sandwich with pork,” Nolen suggests. “It’s similar—but not with cheese.” Yeah, that’s a deal-breaker for the metaphor. Still, the Braumeister sounds pretty spectacular.

Another German dining room here at home, Frankford Hall just off Girard Avenue, offers the beef, pork and cheese Käsekrainer sandwich, which does contain two of the key ingredients for a cheesesteak—but in this case, it’s the sausage itself that is composed of beef, pork and cheese, as opposed to having cheese melted atop the meat. Unarguably delicious, and a dish that all carnivores should devour—but, again, not quite a cheesesteak.

The moral of the story is that in a country with great meat, epic sausages and very good cheeses, none of them seem to come together in a single sandwich. Which you’d think might be healthier, anyway, but maybe not: The food in Germany was so good that I came home several pounds heavier than before I’d left. It seemed a small price to pay for the pleasure of all those fantastic tastes. Even if they didn’t all reach me on a single bun. n

Good things do come in small packages—especially if those good things are edible, and the small package is a tender wrapper encasing some juicy, spice-seasoned ground deliciousness. Drag legend Jackie Beat brings her scathing genius to Franky Bradley’s on Friday. BY BILL CHENEvERT @BillChenevert

J

ackie Beat is a queen among queens. Her career is one that amateur queens of every stripe could be instantly intimidated by: Beat appeared in her first film in 1993—which is about as old as half the queens who lip-sync at Voyeur on a weekly basis—and she started collecting TV credits a couple years later. This weekend, she comes to Franky Bradley’s to premiere Jackie Beat in Philly: #NoFilter on the heels of an army of painted RuPaul’s Drag Race queens backing Miley Cyrus’ close of MTV’s Video Music Awards Sunday night.

“My early look was very Beatnik, hence my name,” Beat tells Philly Weekly. “I wore all black: boots, leggings, skirt, turtleneck, beret. And I told audiences to snap their fingers instead of clapping. It was more performance art than drag.” She told Johnny McGovern, on his YouTube series Hey Qween!, that “clapping is for scotch-drinking capitalist pigs.” This was West Hollywood in 1989: “I read a poem I had written, which was really just a stand-up comedy routine, and won a contest! The rest is herstory.”

Beat’s herstory includes appearances in Wigstock: The Movie and Sex and the City, plus loads of fabulously original parody songs and, of course, boatloads of shade. Oh, Jackie Beat is the queen mother of subtle shade. “[Wigstock] wasn’t that much fun, actually.

Alexis Arquette and I were outsiders, and the NYC queens let us know it,” she recalls. “Lady Bunny wouldn’t let me perform the first time I came and gave me a whopping minute and a half the second time.” But, she says, “I adore Bunny now and am very good friends with all the hateful queens who

threw shade at me early on.” As you might guess, her SATC experience wasn’t all that, either. “No one on set was particularly friendly, except Kim Cattrall, who really is as fun-loving and easy-going as [her character] Samantha!”

How about reading some baby queens, Jackie?

They’re so damn entitled.

“I have always found that the more talented the queen, the less attitude and drama. There are a lot of drag queens–especially these days–who think being a total cunt is part of the job description,” she says. “They have an attitude of ‘If I act like a star, then people will think I’m a star.’ That’s not the way it works. I can be cunty on stage, but I am a professional and courteous in real life. I can also make fun of myself first, and then start in on the audience. I see other queens trying to do what I or Bianca Del Rio do, but they only get the shady part and not the self-deprecating, affectionate or intelligent part.”

Wait, how about RuPaul’s runaway reality hit?

Will she address the force that is the race? “People will have to come to my show to hear my #NoFilter opinion on Drag Race,” she tells us. “I have two scathing songs about it.” Does she see Philadelphia as the hoagie-stuffed, sweatpants-wearing, foul-mouthed described city so many pin on us?

“That’s really like asking some whore how she feels about the last sweaty, fat guy who huffed and puffed while on top of her. I love Philly! Just don’t kiss me on the mouth.”

S

i was just talking to my colleagues about how we don’t get these kinds of stories very often—and i understand you spent a decade trying to get this one made. I was so enamored of the essay in The New Yorker, and I love Katha Pollitt… It resonated. It stayed with me.

Then I found that [producer] Dana Friedman had commissioned a script by Sarah Kernochan, who really took the short story and ran.

The character [of the driver] in the essay was Filipino. But Sarah Kernochan had friends in the Sikh community and decided to make the driver Sikh, which I thought was very beautiful.

I just thought she captured…Sarah had the heart of Katha in her, the essence of Katha, and really made it a movie. Made it a funny, witty, poignant movie in equal doses of comedy and tragedy. And I just thought it was surprising, and unusual, and had beauty to it.

I knew I just wanted to be a part of this, and I didn’t give up. But it’s a tough movie to get made. It was worth the journey.

I actually arrived at a better place to play Wendy nine years later: I had nine more years of life and love and loss.

it often seems hollywood doesn’t allow us to really see how women live the process of getting older. For example, we’ve seen Robert De Niro go from young man to distinguished older actor, whereas those same opportunities aren’t necessarily available to women.

They’re not as abundant as they are to men. And that’s sadly just the nature of this

industry. It is a male-dominated industry.

It is an ageist industry. That will never change, sadly. I mean… maybe a hundred years from now, somehow the scales will tip and it’ll be all female-dominated and female-driven films. God, I wish I could stay alive another hundred years.

You can bemoan it, but you also have to just accept it, rise above, and make your own opportunities. I do think that with the rise of independent film… Independent films have started to become commercial. They’ve started to enter the Oscar race. And now cities all over the country have art houses. It used to really be just the big urban cities—New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago. But now, there are more and more art houses, and people go! And so with the commercial aspect of these films, the financial wooing and winning of these films, it has made independent viable. It’s opened up doors. More doors have opened up, and so more doors have opened up to women. Women—we have great stories to tell.

And people want to see them. I have to tell you: I’ve had more people wanting to see this film than any film I’ve done in a long, long time.

your relationship with ben kingsley in Learning to Drive is just so beautiful and poignant. What was that process like, the give-and-take? What it starts from is a very deep and mutual respect that Sir Ben and I have for one another.

We’ve known each other for a long time.

We worked together on Elegy, a beautiful film we made. We played lovers, and if you ever want to bond with someone, play their lover. [Laughs.]

I wanted to bring that bond to this movie because I knew we had to rock and roll. I knew we didn’t have a lot of time, a lot of money. We had to be joined at the hip in a way but to keep our disparate world. We had to keep our separate worlds in this film, which was essential, that we didn’t blur Patty and Sir Ben with Wendy and Darwan, that we kept distinct lives, separate lives in this little, tiny confined space, which is very hard to do.

But Sir Ben and I showed up, ready to go. I’d had this film in me for nine years; we had the blessing of the whole Sikh community… and he came ready. I remember the first time I saw him in the turban, and he looked so beautiful. I said, “Oh my God.” I looked at him and said, “There’s Darwan.” It was just a long time coming, you know? n

ince Patricia Clarkson’s film debut in Brian De Palma’s 1987 crime epic The Untouchables, the hugely talented actor has racked up an impressive list of credits on both big screen and small; she took home two well-deserved Emmy Awards for guest appearances on HBO’s Six Feet Under. For her latest project, Clarkson stars in Isabell Coixet’s Learning to Drive, a charming slice-oflife fable co-starring Sir Ben Kingsley.

The film, inspired by a 2002 New Yorker article by Katha Politt, casts the actress as Wendy, a recent divorcee who forms a unique and unlikely bond with Darwan (Kingsley), a Sikh driving instructor.

Art on the edge The 2015 Philadelphia Fringe Festival wants you to marvel, to ponder—and maybe to get just a little bit uncomfortable, too.

ere’s the glorious thing about the Philadelphia Fringe Festival: You just never know. Over the course of hundreds of shows during a threeweek period, the avant-garde performance festival— which includes a series of large-scale productions curated from around the world by the FringeArts team itself, plus a grassroots miscellany of locally produced shows based in dozens and dozens of smaller neighborhood venues—is as likely to captivate and enthrall you as it is to leave you more mystified than ever.

I’ll testify to that personally. Last year, one of the local Fringe shows, Found Theater Company’s “Deep Blue Sleep,” turned out to be the most amazingly transcendent thing I’ve ever seen happen on a stage. Except it wasn’t a stage as such—it was the gallery space at the Painted Bride Art Center, turned into the infinite darkness of a moonless night adrift on the vast ocean, where a small troupe of performers conjured up the myth of a lost sailor through dream and nightmare moments rendered in discordantly angelic seven-way harmonies.

Found Theater Company is back this year with a new show, the Dante-meets-noir “City of Woes” at the Vox Populi Aux performance space in Northern Liberties.

But there are so many shows unfolding all across town, it’s almost overwhelming to try to choose what to make time for. The short answer is: Make time for as many as you can, because Fringe gives us the chance to see a high volume of art without shelling out too much for expensive tickets.

ooking back over your dating history, you can probably see some patterns—highs and lows, maybe an empty patch or toxic wasteland, but hopefully a generally upward trajectory.

Right? Now, here’s a fun exercise. Compare that chronology to your list of previous addresses: a couple years surrounded by cats in West Philly, the summer you had four roommates in Fishtown, or that time you used Padmapper to find a surprisingly big bedroom in Point Breeze.

The ups and downs of place follow surprisingly similar rhythms as the ups and downs of people, don’t they?

Our experiences with different neighborhoods are not unlike the variety of our dating relationships: representative of who we are at that point in time, of what we prioritize. There’s a time and place for dating a dreadlocked trustafarian or a blue-collar philosopher, just as there is a lot to be gained by shacking up for a while in Port Richmond or getting your own studio in Queen Village, even if none of those homes or lovers are your final destination.

So let’s take a moment and imagine: What if Philly neighborhoods were people? Which of them would you want to date? Which is a one-night stand, which a three-month fling—and which a lifelong partnership where you might just want to try planting roots?

UnIvERSITY CITY: Soon after meeting, you start hanging out together every day, integrating yourself into their social network, balancing party life and mild domesticity. They teach you how to cook farro and play Settlers of Catan. You feel more cultured because of all the Ethiopian food you’ve been eating, but your old friends complain that they see you less and less frequently.

nORThERn LIBERTIES: Shortly after ending things with your college sweetheart, you find yourself drunkenly making out on a sweaty dance floor with someone whom you realize looks much hotter from across the room than they do up close. In the morning, you plan to dash out, but they make breakfast, and conversation is actually way more interesting than expected. None of your friends expect it to last as long as it does.

tures, most of which revolve around brunch after the gym. It never feels secure, but they’re easily one of the hottest pieces you’ve ever dated, and the sexual chemistry is on point, so you don’t re-

ally mind. While you’re together, you get in the best cardiovascular shape of your life, yet your recycling is primarily filled with takeout containers and empty alcohol bottles.

nORTh PhILLY: Get used to learning a lot of names quickly, because they’re going to introduce you to their entire family within a week of meeting—unless you’re a side piece, in which case, they only come over to your place after 2am. You learn the lyrics to Calle 13 songs and broaden your definition of what outfits one can wear to a club on a Friday night.

FAIRMOUnT: The parents definitely get to meet this one, over a nice glass of wine at Rembrandt’s. When people see you together, everyone assumes this is The One; the relationship just seems so calm and grown-up. Beneath the façade is a fair amount of drama. There are a lot of weekends and even entire months (especially in the fall) when they become unmanageably difficult—but because they’re also incredibly good-looking, you let a lot slide.

RITTEnhOUSE: You flirt hard, but because you’re equally unsure of each other, neither makes a real move for a while.

The relationship is not something that you just fall into; it requires an active decision. They turn out to have a lot more depth than expected, and once you’re officially together, you end up trying to hook up all your friends with theirs.

Things go so shockingly well that, at some point, you start to wonder if you’re in the simulation part of the Matrix. You brush that thought to the side.

SOUTh PhILLY: The hard-partying nights and tough act in the streets belie the fact they really want you to hurry up, propose and have babies. Expect frequent passionate fights and satisfying make-up sex. They will atone for their insane jealousy by keeping you incredibly well fed.

You can’t go out together without running into at least one of their exes, but it’s not a big deal.

SUBURBS: After a big, volatile breakup with Old City, you run to the arms of someone who’ll be consistent. It feels easy to be together, and they give you all the space you need, but every time you run into East Passyunk or Society Hill at a party, the urge to cheat is overwhelming.

Eventually, you open up the relationship: They remain your primary, but it’s only sustainable because you can see Center City at least once a week. n

’m confused about my sexuality. For many years, I thought I preferred heteroromantic asexual relationships. Exposure to select reading material—thanks to my gender-studies classes—has me convinced I’m an asexual t-type (i.e., “top,” but I prefer not to use such connotative terms) female who is attracted to slight and feminine men.

I do not want to take off my clothes or engage in oral, anal, digital, or vaginal sex. Instead, I want to design sexual situations that comely young gentlemen will consensually enter: restraints, CBT, whippings, play piercings, fisting. To make matters worse, I’ve never been in a sexual situation or romantic relationship. I am 23 years old. Extremely low self-esteem and a lack of trust in other people—especially men who are attracted to women—prevented me from reaching out to others, let alone informing a potential th partner about my unusual interests. Fortunately, extensive therapy sessions have improved my self-image and willingness to take risks. Developing a romantic friendship with a potential partner is essential. You should go to munches and put yourself out there on the internet, BEAST, because in both those places/spaces you’ll meet—I promise—other t-type/Dominant women and the men who want to worship them and suffer at their hands.

Your knowledge of the BDSM/kink/fetish community seems pretty distorted—it sounds like your exposure has been limited to reading materials distributed in your gender-studies classes—but I can assure you that there are men out there, some of them slight and feminine, who not only don’t doubt the existence of exclusively t-type/ Dominant females but are actively seeking them. But you’re not going to find them under the rocks in your garden or at the back of your fridge. You’re going to have to enter kinky places/spaces to meet kinky guys.

There’s another type of person in those kinky places/spaces you need to meet: mentors. It’s particularly important for someone with your interests—CBT, whippings, piercings, and fisting are not JV kinks—to meet, speak with, and be mentored by knowledgeable players. These are varsity-level kinks—they are skill sets that take time to acquire. You’re going to need instruction from people with experience before you start torturing a guy’s balls or

sticking (clean and sterile) needles through the head of his cock or his nipples, BEAST, as you could do serious and lasting damage to someone if you’re winging it. Munches are your best bet for meeting the players and educators in your area who take mentorship seriously. Be open about who you are (an asexual t-type female/Dominant woman), your ideal partners (slight and feminine sub guys who are into SM, not sex), and your experience level (nonexistent). Ask about classes, don’t do anyone/ anything that makes you uncomfortable, and do the reading. (Check out Greenery Press for titles on female dominance, CBT, flogging, and other varsity kinks.)

You know who else you’ll meet in the kink scene? Women who don’t fit stereotypical Bettie Page–esque images, don’t dress up in PVC, and don’t play Mistress games—but you’ll also meet women who enjoy doing all of those things, BEAST, as well as women who could take or leave Bettie Page, Mistress games, etc., but who dress up because it turns on their partners and/or attracts the kind of men/women/SOPATGS* they’re interested in restraining and torturing. When someone is indulging your thing (a slight and feminine guy is giving you his cock and balls to torture), it’s simply good manners to indulge his things (letting him call you “Mistress,” if that’s something he enjoys, or pulling on a little PVC).

And give yourself permission to grow—or to continue growing. You used to think you were one thing (a hetero-romantic asexual), and now you realize you may be another thing entirely (an asexual t-type/Dominant female who is attracted to slight and feminine men). Who knows what you’ll learn about yourself once you actually start having IRL experiences? (Also: most guys into hardcore BDSM—particularly hardcore masochists—regard CBT and whippings and piercings as sex. Not foreplay, not a substitute for sex, but sex. Something to think through before you have a slight and feminine guy’s balls in your hands: Your “victim” may experience your play as sexual even if you’re experiencing it differently, i.e., you may not feel like you’re having sex with them, BEAST, but they’re going to feel like they’re having sex with you. Is that okay with your particular flavor of/theories about asexuality?)
