ate Faust is a local songstress on the rise. With two fantastic EPs under her belt, 2012’s Crucial Companion and this spring’s Eros, and a stint last week hosting the Kimmel Center’s fab “Sittin’ In” series, she’s thrilled to be opening for Bilal and Son Little at Underground Arts—a gig WXPN’s The Key has curated as part of Red Bull’s Sound Select series. She’s also amused at the way that she’s booked for any kind of gig—because her sound so beautifully oscillates between singer-songwriter folk, pop, rock and R&B. The last one, she says, too often gets short shrift. “It’s interesting to see the way people lump me in with other things,” Faust tells Philly Weekly, Some people say R&B is corny, she maintains, but “it’s so sensual, so feminine, so arresting. That closeness, I think, makes people uncomfortable.” She cites one of her all-time favorites, Björk: “I listen to her, and I feel uncomfortable, but in a good way. Not everybody wants that closeness, not everyone wants to connect with an artist closely. More and more, we live in a world where

people don’t want to connect directly—with devices that separate us.” Eros is a direct reflection of Faust’s affinity for this intimacy as a powerful connection to audiences, finding divine inspiration from Audre Lorde’s famous “Uses of the Erotic” essay. “I remember the first time I heard her give that speech—I wept,” she admits. “I felt like everything I’d ever felt as a woman, as a girl, as a child growing up in a religious home, as a person who’s creative, as a person who doesn’t see the world, I guess, the way they’re supposed to, this woman put all of this in words. And she spoke to this incredible power that I’ve always felt as a woman.” She rarely sings tracks from her debut because her newer material feels more like her. “I feel like Eros is much more me, solidly me, at this point in time.” —BILL CHENEVERT

The monthly MergeArts event at Coda. One of the
coolest new ongoing culture parties to debut in the city this year, MergeArts presents a monthly live show of music, style and visual art. Curated by the group’s director, Frederick Calalang, each event brings together cutting-edge musical acts, gloriously colorful fashion designers, live painters, photographers, hair and makeup artists, and more. On Thurs., Aug. 27, featured artists will include lensman AJ Kinney, music from Medusa’s Disco, runway fashions from Vinn Alexander, and a lot more. If you haven’t yet been to Coda, the Walnut Street nightclub, MergeArts is a real bacchanalia of a way to introduce yourself to the venue.

Firestone Walker Pivo Pils. The pilsner is
the world’s most popular style of beer, though you’d never guess it based on the American craft beer scene. That’s changing, however, as craft lovers discover that high-quality “easy” drinking beers are just as desirable as heavy hitters. Take Pivo Pils by Firestone Walker: Its earthy, biscuity grains and mild peppery spice provide a nice backbone for clean, bright hops, but with no one component overwhelming the other. A crisp, delicious little beer that has wonderfully grassy, lemon-tinged hops and a touch of spice, this pilsner is proof that a little nuance isn’t a bad thing. Victory Prima Pils. Well
before most of today’s craft brewers were toying with modern takes on the classic pilsner, the folks at Victory had already perfected a brew that merged modern sensibilities with German tradition. Prima Pils was once one of the northeast’s best kept secrets, but is now widely considered a definitive example of what a modern pilsner can taste like. Its subtle, elegant blend of lightly toasted bread, faintly herbal hops and mild bitterness in the aftertaste results in a beer that’s as at home with a fine meal as it is with chips and pretzels at a football game. Grab some on draft at The Industry and Cherry Street Tavern.

Tröegs Sunshine Pils. Beer lovers in Pennsylvania are blessed to have more than a few top shelf pilsners within easy reach, and one of the best is by Tröegs. Sunshine Pils is one of the beers that can be credited with making modern craft beer lovers think twice about the anti-pilsner bias that has long turned snobby noses up at this easy drinking German style. Light, crisp and refreshing, with softly fragrant, lemon-tinged hops and a perfectly balanced body of crackery malts, this is one of those rare brews that goes down easy enough to satisfy the gang at poker night while boasting enough subtle complexity to reward drinkers who pay attention to what they’re drinking. Pair it with bar food, good times or both at well over a dozen locations.

Stoudt’s Pils. Carol Stoudt is a pioneer who doesn’t get nearly enough credit. She and her husband, Ed, founded Stoudt’s Brewing Co. way back in 1987, when the idea of craft brewing was a weird little corner of the beer world very few people paid attention to. And note the “she.” Even nearly 30 years later, she’s one of the few women to head a craft brewery. Oh, and what ends up in your glass thanks to her work ain’t too shabby, either. One sip of their pils will tell you that: Pouring clear gold with a fizzy white head, this beer sings with light grain, grass and cereal. The hopping is traditional, giving this pils a mildly bitter finish and a bright, zesty aroma. Get some on draft at Royal Tavern or Split Rail Tavern. Sly Fox Pikeland Pils. There are so many great pilsners being brewed in Pennsylvania, we could probably write about them for a few weeks in a row and not run out of beers to talk about. Don’t worry, though, we’ll get back to mixing it up next week; in the meantime, set your sights on Sly Fox Pikeland Pils. Pouring a light straw color and boasting easy drinkability, Pikeland has grassy, herbal hops on the nose, a slightly peppery bite in the taste, burnt toast malts, assertive bitterness and soft carbonation. Quality Noodles It’s a sin that Americans identify “ramen” with “instant.” Rai Rai demonstrates the distinction. By Brian Freedman @WineUpdate
I
still remember the first time my mother tore open a package of ramen and cooked it up with the little pouch of seasoning on the stove. For a six-year-old, it was pretty much the most exotic thing I’d ever seen: That dried brick of squiggle-sided noodles! The pouch of mysterious powder like an illicit drug of some sort! The characters on the package’s flank that I couldn’t read! Who cared that it tasted of little more than salt and, um, salt; I was instantly hooked by all of it, by the process and the aesthetics and, well, okay, the salt. I recently did an informal poll of friends and family, and for most of this (admittedly mainly suburban sampling), instant ramen was generally the only exposure to the stuff until fairly recently. That’s because in the past few years, the many and multi-faceted glories of ramen have been becoming better known in this country. And they should be: A properly prepared serving of ramen is among the most pleasurable ways on the planet to consume noodles, up there with the greats of Italy and China. Really, then, you might say that instant ramen is to the real stuff as Chef Boyardee is to your grandmother’s Sunday gravy. There’s no comparison. And Rai Rai Ramen, which opened up a few months ago on the 900 block of Race Street, is doing a laudable job of sharing the gospel of the slurp. (They also have outposts on West Lancaster Avenue; North Brunswick, New Jersey; and Kailua, Hawaii.) Tan Tan Ramen, all nutty with sesame and hefty with a generous couple of fistfuls of ground pork, steamed away in its shoyu soy-seasoned soup. In contrast, the Mayo Ramen, with its salt-seasoned shio broth, took on the earthy sweetness of char siu pork and garlic sauce. All of the ramens I’ve tasted there, regardless of their base liquid, benefited from the noodles
themselves, slippery and possessed of perfect chew, that, we were told by our server, are shipped in from Japan weekly. Mabo Tofu Ramen was also a hit, the generous cubes of tofu soaking up the deeply flavored shoyu soup in a totally different way than the noodles. (One dish, however, utterly perplexed me: The pork buns, which are listed on the menu just like that— Pork Bun 2 Pcs. What arrived, however, was like a worst-hits mixtape of the Saturday-night dinners from my childhood. Was this Japanese? Was it Chinese? Jewish? I still don’t know. Regardless, the juxtaposition of sweet plum sauce on one side of the pork, against the Russian-dressinglike slick on the other side, and the inexplicable leaf of lettuce added to the party, left me confused. You ex-

pect something like that at, say, Bing Bing, where those sorts of combinations are invariably thought through and delicious. Here, it was just confusing and, in my opinion, not very good.) But so much else was: The roti canai all delicate and perfumed when dipped into the curry sauce; the Japanese canned green tea; the friendly service. And, of course, all that ramen. Which is what will be bringing me back regularly in the coming weeks and months. If only six-yearold Brian could have tasted the good stuff, which is what Rai Rai is serving up. n

I, for one, absolutely adore it when cultures converge, especially in the culinary arena, so when Bar Volver, the sexy, chic annex to Chef Jose Garces’ Kimmel Center-based restaurant, introduced its new late-summer menu, the figurative somersaults began in earnest—and, it turns out, for good reason. Their handful of updated bites plates comes with this unique union of Japanese sushi and Spanish paella, for which a traditional maki roll filled with cooked shrimp gets a delicious kick courtesy of yellow rice, spicy chorizo, piquillo peppers and—’cause why not?—a layer of prosciutto. Between these and the tiny, to-die-for shrimp toast appetizers, your happy hour’s instantly gone up a level, especially pared with the Truffle Rush cocktail, an apparent Bar Volver favorite, where the delicacy’s assertive, up-front flavor puts the normally bossy bourbon in the back seat. T
hough Grace Potter’s a Vermont-raised New England girl, she’s practically ours. Philly audiences love her so much. And with a giant move in her career this week—the release of Midnight, her first record that doesn’t have “and the Nocturnals” attached to it—we had to check in with the multi-instrument-wielding frontwoman, whose high-energy American rock vibe evokes the likes of Lucinda Williams as much as it does Pat Benatar, to see what it feels like to take this big step. “It’s like nothing I’ve experienced before—I feel like a freshman in high school,” Potter tells Philly Weekly by phone from Santa Fe (where she’s been “laughing up a little of this New Mexican sunshine”). “This record is a genre-hopping extravaganza. The people who didn’t necessarily love the blues-rock thing that the Nocturnals do—they’re like, ‘I finally get it.’” The drop of the Nocturnals title from her marquee definitely has some fans worried, but—hello?—she’s been leading the whole outfit for 13 years. “I’m the main songwriter,” she points out. “I wrote all the songs for The Nocturnals, and I wrote all the songs here [on Midnight]. I kind of love that everyone’s freaked out. I’m like ‘No, you know what? Everything’s not fine. Shit needs to get awesome, and in order for shit to get awesome, you have to shake it up.’” Mainly, she says, those detractors are just “a few people that don’t like pop music who say, ‘I wish you hadn’t gone pop.’” What’s her response to that? “I’ve
been making pop music all along!” she cries, pointing to chart-toppers like Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon as examples of the ever-changing face of pop through time. “I’d like to give pop music a little kick in the ass. Blues-rock and the blues are still absolutely intrinsic to this music.” One of the defining tracks on Midnight, easily, is “Delirious.” “That was the point of no return on the album where I wrote a song that I knew was gonna be a hit, and I knew it was gonna be f—ing awesome, and I knew people were gonna f—ing hate it—a few people and some of my bandmates,” she declares, “[but I] can’t write music to keep other people happy all the time.” Meanwhile, Potter relishes her special relationship with Philadelphia. “Philly is one of the first major cities, outside of Vermont and Boston and the northeast network, that we broke out in—way before New York. Hell, in L.A., I still haven’t broken out,” she says. “Philly has great taste running through the body of the city, and it’s been a steadfast pillar of our tour[s]. It’s always a place we go to test out new music. It’s one of the cities that’s always willing to have that conversation with me.” What kind of conversation? “Not all artists are cagey, defensive, freakedout animals that want you to love everything they do. Philly’s one of the first places I played ‘Paris Ooh La La,’ and everyone freaked out. I love Philly—and I can’t wait to get back.” n

Spy-Fi The year of secret agent flicks continues with The Man From U.N.C.L.E. by ZAKI HASAN @ZakisCorner
W
ith the arrival of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. after 20-plus years in development, we’ve completed the TV-to-feature-film process for all four major spy series of the 1960s. The Mission: Impossible movies began their run in 1996; The Avengers (no, not those Avengers) arrived in 1998; and I Spy hit cineplexes in 2002. While the latter two rightly died quick deaths both critically and at the turnstile, Mission: Impossible is still going strong, as we just discussed a few weeks ago— which just left the big-screen U.N.C.L.E. as the lone question mark. Could this most quintessentially ‘60s of spy skeins follow in the long-lasting franchise footsteps of Tom Cruise’s Mission agent Ethan Hunt? (Ironically, Cruise was actually in negotiations at one point to topline an earlier iteration of U.N.C.L.E.) Well, the jury’s still out as far as the “franchise” part goes—opening weekend box office wasn’t great—but as for this initial installment, the Guy Ritchie-directed pic manages to clear a space for itself that not only distinguishes it from its fellow travelers in this genre, but also makes a case for its own relevance. Probably the smartest decisions the creatives made was to set the feature adaptation in the same 1960s milieu as the show. By playing out against a Cold War backdrop rather than trying to update the premise and square-peg it into the postglasnost era, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. occupies the same heightened reality fantasyland that those early James Bond movies now exist in. The film stars current Superman Henry Cavill as debonaire CIA agent Napoleon Solo (played by Robert Vaughn in the ‘64’68 series and its follow-ups) and Armie Hammer as KGB assassin Ilya Kuryakin (David McCallum’s TV role). Although the pair begin as nemeses, extenuating geopolitical circumstances force them together in pursuit of a common goal: locate a missing rocket scientist and rescue him from Nazi sympathizers (Elizabeth Debicki, Luca Calvani) who want him to build a nuclear bomb. (Also in the mix is Alicia Vikander, luminous in Ex Machina earlier this year, as the scientist’s daughter.)
Now, if you’ve seen enough buddy cop movies, you can probably guess that Solo and Kuryakin find a way to get along, and they may even grow fond of each other along the way. As such, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is less about any particular surprises the plot may offer—though, admittedly, there are a few. Instead, it’s similar to the Bond formula in that it’s all about the simple pleasure of knowing things have to come to a preordained conclusion, and watching it done well. Stylistically, U.N.C.L.E. is very much of a piece with Ritchie’s two Sherlock Holmes flicks, so I suspect one’s appreciation for it will depend greatly on their tolerance for the Snatch helmer’s specific tics. Of course, the real joy of the film is in watching the game cast (which also includes Hugh Grant and Jared Harris) go through their paces. Cavill in particular is a lot of fun as Our Man Solo, adopting an exaggerated affect to his delivery that neatly mimics Vaughn’s staccato style and also feels like the character’s sly commentary on the genre itself, as if he’s standing to the side and winking at the audience. Hammer arguably has the tougher job: trying to make his character seem sympathetic and understandable all while speaking in a Russian accent that could very easily tip into Boris Badanov territory. Luckily, he manages to pulls it off admirably. From Kingsman earlier this year and Mission: Impossible last month to the 007 epic Spectre in November, 2015 is proving quite the fertile year for widescreen espionage—and that’s not even mentioning Melissa McCarthy in Spy! Though The Man From U.N.C.L.E. lacks the wit of Kingsman and the spectacle of M:I—Rogue Nation, it nonetheless sits comfortably alongside its spy movie siblings. As is to be expected with a film of this sort, the conclusion leaves the door open for a return visit or two with Solo and Kuryakin. And while I don’t think a sequel is necessary, I’d be happy to join them on another assignment. n

Some people have a friend circle. Me? Semi-overlapping ovals.
A
couple months ago, I met a girl named Molly for the first time, in a dressing room. We were both performing at a fundraiser: I was there to do burlesque, she was pole dancing. She was ready for me, armed with a gameplan to get to know each other. I was like a clueless gazelle in the Serengeti, just mindlessly drinking from a puddle and applying bright red lipstick while she was like the stealthy lion, ready to pounce with friendship. We already had 50 mutual friends on Facebook, but from wildly divergent parts of our lives: the live performance scene, political activism, professional fitness and other mutual interests. Immediately we recognized a kindred nature, punctuated by the shared experience of being Day Walkers: participants in unconnected social spheres. A fair amount of people go to grad school, for instance, but few of them also gyrate on stages. To be able to talk about this experience with someone was invaluable. These were only two of the areas on which we overlapped. Needless to say, her friendship hunt was successful: She bagged and tagged me, and now we drink entirely too much iced coffee together. Some people find a core group of friends for the long haul. A dozen people who all lived in the same dorm or something, stay in contact, take vacations to the same beach house every summer and end up parenting at a comparable pace. There are friends who meet in middle school over a shared love of video games and end up being each other’s best man at their respective weddings two decades later. The show Friends was about that kind of solid circle of buddies who grow together, only periodically entertaining cameos from other humans. (Like when the producers realize there have been no Black people on screen in 9 seasons and pretend it would be plausible for Aisha Tyler to date Ross.) I’ve always been envious of those groups. They’re like a small community, or a family even. As an only child who moved across the country in young adulthood, seeing that kind of committed comradery makes me feel like an independent contractor in comparison. Sure, I can move freely, but there’s no job security, and the taxes are very complicated.
Mine is a more promiscuous model of friendship, with two (!!) BFFs and a network of folks I adore, culled from one of the many separate universes in which I inhabit. They may or may not know each other, they may or may not like each other. Which is a thing. The fact that two people both get along with me isn’t always evidence they’ll get along. That’s why my friend Joel from spinning class gets stressed about big gatherings. He loves to host parties, but is nervous about how the intersecting clusters of acquaintances will interact: “I prefer to do dinner or drinks in a small group.” His wife Lela knows the struggle of trying to compartmentalize friend groups. She has one of those Real Actual Grownup Jobs but also performs as a samba dancer, costumed in little more than sparkles, feathers and a smile. She cultivates relationships at work to the degree that she can, but ultimately, that’s limited. “I’m not connected with any of them on Facebook,” she says, because “pretty much the only pictures I’m tagged in are samba.” She’s wisely playing defense, concerned about the sexist cultural tendency to make women choose between being perceived as either competent or sexy, since they certainly can’t be both. Even if you’re not breaking social conventions by simultaneously being two things you’re not “supposed” to be, odds are good you’re doing a bit of code switching. In one portion of your life, you may present one facet of who you are and reveal entirely different (but equally authentic) pieces of yourself in other spheres. The question is not whether it’s Matt Murdock or Daredevil who is real: the reality is both. People are dynamic and complex, balancing multiple genuine identities. True intimacy is seeing and valuing these divergent aspects of someone, not picking specific pieces to love. Different friend groups allow us to explore various sides of ourselves. Sometimes we get lucky and converge in more than one domain, like my friend Molly and I do. And even in the realms where we’re dissimilar, she and I are still building. She introduces me to things I’ve never seen, takes me places I’d never otherwise go, and I make her stay up way past her bedtime. May you find your own Molly in a dressing room one day. n

’m a woman in a straight relationship. I woke up this morning, and my BF wasn’t in bed with me. He felt ill in the middle of the night and went to sleep in the spare room—where he found a condom in its wrapper behind the nightstand. Now my BF thinks I’m cheating on him. I haven’t cheated on him and have no desire to. I have an IUD and we are monogamous, so we don’t use condoms. But I used to keep condoms around to use on an old sex toy that I liked but was allergic to. That toy is long gone (I found out it was made of terrible materials and disposed of it), but I kept the condoms in case I met someone. That someone ended up being him—but by the time we met, I had an IUD. I explained all this to him, but he doesn’t believe me. We’ve lived together for two years and were just talking about buying a house and having kids. —Condom Resurfaces And Shatters Happiness Your boyfriend should ask himself—order him to ask himself—which is the likelier scenario: that his girlfriend scatters condoms around the house because she’s cheating on him? Or that his girlfriend, like almost all sexually active adults who have used condoms for birth control, disease prevention and sex-toy safety, has a few loose condoms rattling around her living space? That your boyfriend can’t accept your perfectly reasonable explanation for that one stray condom, CRASH, has me wondering if the recent talk about buying a house and having kids might be the actual issue. Is he looking for an excuse to dump you, and the stray condom is a convenient casus belli? Or is he really that jealous and insecure? If he doesn’t want to buy a house and have kids, then you obviously shouldn’t buy a house or have kids with him. But the same goes if he’s really this jealous and insecure. You don’t want to be saddled with a partner who sees evidence of infidelity where none exists, CRASH, because life is a parade of incidents and ephemera—an easily misinterpreted text message from a male coworker, a stray pair of underpants left behind by a boyfriend who predates him, a cute waiter/barista/personal trainer who catches your eye—that could potentially set him off. Everyone is entitled to moments of insecurity, of course, but you don’t want to be with a man who melts down over nothing. My boyfriend of six months tied me up for the first time a month ago. He didn’t know what he was doing, and I didn’t get turned on because it hurt. I got him two sessions with a professional bondage top as a gift. I was the “model,” and I was very turned on as the instructor walked my boyfriend through safe bondage techniques and positions. The guy was attractive, but not as

Tell him the jokes hurt your feelings—no smile, no ambiguity, no gloss—and then see what happens. If he knocks it off, WET, he was a nice doofus and the relationship may be salvageable. If he keeps it up, if the jokes don’t stop, he’s a giant asshole, and he actually does mean to hurt you, and the relationship isn’t worth salvaging. (Please bear this in mind: An asshole might claim to be a nice doofus—he’ll tell you he was just trying to make you feel better about the bed-wetting thing with humor— but if the jokes don’t stop … he’s not a nice doofus. He’s a giant asshole.) The reason you’re afraid to say something is that you don’t want to lose him. But you need to flip that on its head: If your boyfriend is a giant asshole—even if he’s just a medium asshole—you should be in a big hurry to lose him. Say something. n
