uince Productions brings the sixth annual GayFest! back to Philly this year, with two weeks of bold performances.

The Philly-based theatre company has focused their work on underrepresented voices, creating pieces that challenge stereotypes, provoke thought, and foster understanding. GayFest! features four productions, a queer comedy duo, an opening gala and much more.

This year’s roster is incredibly inclusive, including plays about polyamory, gay marriage, and more, but most importantly, all of the plays put a spotlight on the LGBTQ+ experience. The shows being performed are “My Favorite Husbands” by Andrew Marvel (preview on Aug. 13, opening Aug. 14), “Harbor” by Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin (preview on Aug. 15, opening Aug. 16) “MMF” by David L. Kimple (preview on Aug. 19, opening Aug. 20), and “Wolves” by Steve Yockey (preview on Aug. 22, opening Aug. 23). In a new initiative, Quince Productions is offering pay-what-you-can tickets to the preview performances; simply reserve your seats

ahead of time and pay what you’re able on the night of the show.

If plays aren’t your thing, but you don’t want to miss out on GayFest!, don’t worry: The Bang Group, a comedy troupe focusing on the LGBTQ+ experience, will also be on hand. The troupe, who have been featured at GayFest! in the past, will perform their comedic dance routines as a part of their “Slapstuck” show on Aug. 18 and 19.

The Opening Gala for GayFest! will be held on Friday, Aug. 12 at Studio X. Mediterranean restaurant Kanella will provide catering, and free wine will be available. A Hop Away From Losing History Local preservation group circulates petition with future of former Weisbrod & Hess Brewery in question

B

usiness is booming in the River Wards, especially that of the boozy sort. In the past decade, breweries have opened and expanded at a rate that begs the question how many more bottles of beer can we fit on our wall (and on our streets)?

Even more than a century ago, beer was a staple business in the neighborhood, with the former Weisbrod & Hess Oriental Lager Beer Company setting up shop in 1882. While the days of Weisbrod & Hess ended shortly after Prohibition, other breweries have stepped in to take its place.

Opened in 1994, Yards Brewing Co., 901 N. Delaware Ave., recently landed some new digs in Northern Liberties, thanks to the need to produce more beer. Housed in the oldest brewing facility in the city, Philadelphia Brewing Company, 2440 Frankford Ave., has been steadily expanding its lineup, brewing up the official beer, Holy Wooder, for the pope last September (the seminary ordered a keg for his stay).

Joining the two larger production companies within the past five years were Do Good Brewing, 3245 Amber St. (which is also looking to expand to a larger location), St. Benjamin Brewing, 1710 N. Fifth St., and Evil Genius Beer Company, 1731-33 N. Front St. While businesses continue to expand and start anew, the beer tradition that came before is still standing.

The headquarters of Philadelphia Brewing Company is a perfect example, located within the boundaries of the East Kensington Neighbors Association and housed in the 38,000-square-foot section of the former Weisbrod & Hess Oriental Lager Beer Brewery.

Opened by German saloon keepers George Weisbrod and Christian Hess and designed by brewery architect A.C. Wagner, the brewery operated until Prohibition in 1920, and stayed open for five more years after Prohibition ended, until ultimately closing in 1938.

The building that Philadelphia Brewing Company calls home is a fine example of reuse, upgrading a facility for modernity’s (and production’s) sake, while still preserving the past.

Terra-cotta tiles and the original brewery name still line the exterior walls of the building.

Standing in stark contrast, is the original barrel house and store room section of the property at 2117 E. York St. It has received a handful of violations from L&I over the past few years, the most recent being “unsafe structure” in the beginning of July for the condition of the roof.

Walking down Martha Street, the sky is easily visible from the front of the building, holes in the roof serving as an observatory.

A couple of days after the telltale neon orange sheet was displayed on the property, a yellow sheet, a permit, was hung. The violations, it turned out, had spurred nearby neighbors into action.

Concerned residents reached out to KORH (Kensington Old Richmond Heritage)/NPA (Neighborhood Preservation Alliance), the local grassroots preservation initiative, fearing that the future of the building might be in jeopardy.

KORH/NPA was recognized by the Fishtown Neighbors Association in June with a Community Service Award for its dedication to preserving the history of the River Wards.

The organization started the petition that ultimately led to open discussions between residents and developer Ori Feibush about the M.E. Church on Montgomery Avenue. Originally slated for demolition, the property was put back on the market by Feibush and it was purchased, with the stipulation that it remain standing.

Cofounders Andrew Fearon, Dana Fedeli and Quentin Stoltzfus are hopeful a similar outcome can be achieved with the Weisbrod & Hess property and started a similar petition on the internet at the end of July.

The petition for Weisbrod & Hess Brewery calls on “the City Council President Darrell Clarke, 7th District Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez, 1st District Councilman Mark Squilla, L&I, the City Planning Commission, and the Philadelphia Historical Commission, to help save our beloved Weisbrod & Hess history and re-examine our municipal development and preservation processes. We ask them to unite against a program of unregulated and insensitive development plaguing our city.”

As of press time, the petition had more than 900 signatures with a goal of 1,000 (to show elected officials, the owners and residents) there is support for having the building be reused and preserved rather than demolished.

“We’re hoping [the owners] will reconsider and show the building to someone who wants to reuse it,” Fedeli said. “We really want it to remain standing. It’s a really well-loved building. The community is really up in arms about it.”

Part of that community is the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia, which Fearon said is in full support of the organization’s efforts.

“We really deserve better than this,” Fearon said in re-

gards to the building potentially being demolished to make way for more high-cost living units, “this type of development that’s displacing our historic resources of the area to basically make a quick buck.”

The brewery complex is a significant part of the neighborhood, according to Fearon.

“When you think of Kensington and the landscape, the main cultural resources is the industrial heritage,” he said. “When I walk out [of my house], I see that smokestack. I orient myself with that when I’m navigating the neighborhood.”

The loss of the smokestack that is attached to the building would be a “tremendous loss to the skyline of the area,” Fearon added.

Stoltzfus hopes it’s a wakeup call to engage in “smarter development.”

“We have plenty of brand-new condos and that’s fine,” he said, “but we can’t just go around bulldozing these old significant buildings.”

Ideally, KORH/NPA wants “to find a buyer for reuse that will appreciate the building and the neighborhood that loves the building.”

The group has reached out to the owners on multiple occasions, but has received mixed messages, including if the building is for sale.

Several sources outside of the organization identified the owners of the property as Anton (Tony) Michels and Christopher Isaacson.

The sources asked to remain anonymous for fear of political retaliation.

Isaacson’s wife is chief of staff for state Rep. Mike O’Brien. Michels is the president of the German Society of Philadelphia.

Given that, according to its website, the nonprofit organization is “devoted to furthering the understanding of German and German-American contribution to the growth of American history and culture from the past to the present, and into the future,” it would seem counterproductive that one of its members would not see that preserving the property rather than demolishing it could be an opportunity to fulfill that mission.

The property owner is listed as Autowerkstat LLC, with an address listed to a property owned by Isaacson. In the most recent permits to perform work on the property, Michels is listed as the contractor.

Records of any other partners could not be located.

In an email, Isaacson provided responses to questions about the current state of the building and its future. “We do NOT have a demo permit,” he wrote. “We DO have a repair permit. We do not have ANY plans to demo the older portion of the building, the office part is questionable, but not at this time.”

The work description for the current permit states it is “for replacement of roof rafters and decking kind” to resolve the unsafe violation.

Isaacson went on to explain that “the building is not actively being offered for sale, but we have had several offers,” and that, “I have responded to all requests about making offers.”

The asking price is $2 million.

In regards to the neighbors’ reaction and the petition, Isaacson wrote he “will not voice my opinion about the building” and, “We have no response to the residents’ efforts. If someone would like to make an offer for the building, they may. We have no control over what a new owner would do.”

Asked whether he was more inclined to see if an offer comes in with the purpose of reuse given the support behind the petition, Isaacson wrote, “I have no inclination as to a specific buyer.”

Reached by phone on Friday, Michels said he did not “have the time and patience” to talk about the property and asked for a return call when he would be willing to provide more information.

As of last Thursday, there was no real estate information posted on the building and when asked whom interested buyers should contact, Isaacson responded, “You have found me, so have others.”

On Monday, a “For Sale By Owner” sign appeared on the building with Isaacson and Michels listed as contacts. Both were present, and Michels spoke about the building and the petition.

“We have decided to put [the property up for sale] for $2 million and we would consider selling it to someone who would keep the building as it is,” Michels said.

Michels admitted he was initially drawn to the building because of the ar-

chitectural features and thought he could do something with it, but, “We are not developers,” and, “We have tried the past six years to find a solution. It has potential, but to keep the appearance, there’s the reality of cost.”

According to Michels, the building had been used as a scrap metal business since after the end of WWII up until 1994 and alterations affecting the originality of the building had been made, including removing parts of an archway to install a garage bay door.

Michels admitted to being in contact with KORH, but was not in support of the petition.

“The petition is on the wrong path,” he said. “We just wanted to fix the office. We could have knocked it down a long time ago and put up that ugly plastic shit that’s popping up all over the area.”

He also addressed rumors that a deal was already reached for the building.

“People were walking around the building saying it was a done deal for 21 units,” Michels said. “Whoever said that, was not authorized by us.”

A few blocks away, a similar situation recently played out.

Ori Feibush purchased 1834-48 Frankford Ave., which contained a couple of old garages, one of which was the former home of the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym. Local historian Ken Milano submitted a nomination for historical designation on the grounds that the buildings sat on the former Kensington Mutual Burial Grounds.

Ultimately, the Philadelphia Historical Commission did not approve the nomination, clearing the way for Feibush to demolish the garages and build an estimated 40 residential units.

In an area where 100-year-old-plus churches are demolished for $400,000 houses to be built before the dumpsters bearing the debris of the past are even carried away, nothing seems to be sacred (or safe, for that matter).

“Nothing is protected, basically,” Fearon said. “You can demolish whatever you want in the middle of the night and then put up the lowest-common denominator of design, the cheapest possible construction for the most economic gain.”

There is no comparison between some of the new construction versus the old buildings, the old buildings “being built like trucks” and some of the newer buildings basically constructed to be “disposable,” he added.

The Weisbrod & Hess Brewery building is a testament to that and with the collective voice of the community expressed through signatures, the future of a significant part of East Kensington’s architectural and cultural past and skyline might continue to stand. n

Diplo’s Mad Decent Block Party Comes Home

P

roving that attending Temple and working as a Philly school teacher can lead to big things, Diplo is one of Philly’s favorite new-er success stories. Although a Mississippi native, Philly counts Diplo as their own since this is, of course, where his DJ career was first born and nurtured. Although he screws around with Justin Bieber in the studio these days, don’t hold it against the DJ, record producer, rapper, singer, songwriter and record executive, who now calls La La Land home... That is until the Mad Decent Block Party comes to town.

The music festival that began in Philly and has spread throughout the country—first initiated by Diplo—comes back to Festival Pier (get there before it becomes condos, people) this weekend. This year’s lineup includes Baauer, Dirty South Joe B2B Swizzymack, heRobust and Diplo himself. Brooklyn may have taken a bullet for Philly with Drake crashing Sunday’s Block Party to the North. Although we really can’t make any promises about a double Drake whammy showing up to this weekend’s party, we hope Brooklyn’s sacrifice was not in vain. And it just goes to show, you never know who Diplo can persuade for an impromptu visit.

We caught up with the DJ before his visit back to his former home to find out more about his fast-paced life and love of the city.

When was the last time you were back in Philly and what do you miss most about your time here?

What does the Block Party mean to you personally that you’ve chose to keep it in Philly?

Block Party started in Philly, so it always feels like the hometown show of the tour. I’m so proud that we’ve expanded all over the country but it wouldn’t be Block Party if we didn’t make a stop here.

though, the process just always takes longer than I expect.

Hopefully I can continue making music that people love.

How do you keep your busy schedule going? What does a typical day look like? Is there a typical day?

We have such a great line-up this year, especially in Philly, so I’ll probably be there all day.

Every day is different, but show days are probably the most common, sometimes I have two shows. I usually take a flight in the morning, go to my hotel, work out, work on music, play a show, eat dinner, play another show, get a little sleep if I’m lucky and then start all over again. When I’m home in LA, I try to spend as much time with my kids as possible and hole up in the studio to work on music.

For struggling musicians in Philly, what’s your advice?

If you could add two hours to your day each day, how would you spend it?

It sounds so cliche, but if you believe in something go for it, don’t follow trends, follow what you love. I’ve always gravitated toward stuff that at the time was a little left of center, and it feels good to be able to share music I love and artists I believe in with the world.

Sleeping would probably be the best choice, but I’d probably just work more.

Who are you most excited to watch at this year’s show?

Of course, Philly just hosted the DNC, did you have any takeaway feelings from the convention?

How important it is to get out there and VOTE!

What has been one of the most challenging parts of the music business lately for you and what’s your goal for the future from a business standpoint?

I just want to keep pushing boundaries and working as long as I can. This past year has been tough because I’ve been so busy touring on Peace Is The Mission, it’s a challenge to focus on new music. It’s all coming together

Professional or personal, what’s the first thing you think of that you’re excited about for the future?

Does Being Black in America Require Therapy?

Inspired by the rise in police brutality, EMBRace aims to counsel black families in racial trauma.

W

ill daddy get shot by a cop? Will I? That’s probably not one of the ordinary childhood fears or questions most white parents field from a scared child. But for many in the black community, such sobering questions are a reality of living in America. Not the fears of monsters or imaginary creatures under the bed, the fears of violence and rejection based on race are very real, so real in fact, that parents are often times left without answers.

Amidst the sea of white faces dining outside under the red and blue umbrellas next to the Annenberg Center, the Solomon Labs building is tucked back behind the Graduate School of Education. Inside is sterile academia, but what the Racial Empowerment Collaborative (REC) is doing is anything but. Here, tears flow, rage is released and as Dr. Howard Stevenson puts it, the healing from racial trauma can begin.

Engaging, Managing, and Bonding through Race (EMBRace) is a seven-week workshop launched in March at Penn, focusing on racial stress and trauma management geared to families with adolescents between the ages of 10-14.

Does being black in America require therapy to heal from rejection and injustice? Has our culture created a traumatic stress that unlike the better known PTSD has no “post,” only a “present” attached to it? Dr. Riana Anderson emphatically says “Yes!” And the cure, according to Anderson and Stevenson is therapy that point blank focuses on racial trauma. It’s been an idea in the making for over three years between Anderson, a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania and Stevenson, who directs REC within the Graduate School of Education and has over three decades of experience working as a clinical psychologist in impoverished areas. “I was heavily involved with parent intervention work myself at the University of Virginia,” says Anderson.

“I read some of his [Stevenson’s] work and it looked like a beautiful nexus, if I could take my parent intervention research and I could take his racial socialization research and put it together, we could come up with something that didn’t exist for families of adolescent children.”

Wondering what racial socialization means? Stevenson says the field of racial socialization started around attempting to answer the question of whether talking to black children about their experiences with racial inequality could be beneficial. “Does it matter if parents talk to their kids about things like being treated as less capable, and does it help them in ways, like academically? Over time it has morphed into asking ‘Does that parent communication

influence anger management and depression management?’” The field of course is relatively new, only a few decades old, taking that long to just be recognized as a legitimate course of study. Having finally been established, researchers in the field like Stevenson now hope to improve the outcomes, to provide ways of coping, and that’s where EMBRace comes in.

“How do you raise your children in a world that might not see your child as equal, as smart, as capable as other children?” asks Stevenson. “So the host of interactions that child might face from peers, from adults, from teachers, authority figures like cops, it pushes you to prepare your children differently,” he explains. “The stigma of mental health is still taboo, even though we know the effects of rejection based on race affects your mental and physical health. While I’m talking to my child, I’m stressed having to even do this, and then having to deal with my child living in a world where he or she might be rejected is doubly stressful.”

It’s not just the messages within a family unit that EMBRace addresses. With the media and internet playing such a large role in the daily messages (everything from graphic videos of police involved shootings of black men to cyberbullying) sent to youth, these factors are brought into this intervention workshop too.

Consisting of individual family member therapy with a break for dinner, followed by a family therapy session, Anderson says that therapy begins with a focus on being more attentive to what messages family members send to each other and how well they listen, and moves into strategies for coping within the wider world. The dinner break is intentional, allowing for a less

formal time to get feelings and experiences out in the open. “We’re teaching skills like ‘in the moment’ reactions, when to speak, when not to speak,” explains Stevenson.

“Articulating your emotions, standing up for yourself without putting your life at risk, with family, friends, with authority figures.

With practice you get better at it and build confidence.”

Stevenson adds that boys can be particularly guarded because, although they can express anger, getting down to the hurt feelings to heal them can be a challenge.

In fact, Anderson reports that for both parents and children entering the program, denial is a huge challenge. “Every single family to the original intervention came in and said, ‘Oh, I can cope; I’m doing really well with coping.’ and after that first session, every single one of those numbers dropped down, because they became aware that they haven’t been able to assess how well they can cope.” She follows that thought by stating that coping ratings went back up by the time the families were exiting the program weeks later.

That denial phase is what Stevenson describes as survival mode. “It’s human for everyone, whether you know you’re on the front lines or not, to deny, so you can cope. If you look at every detail of a tragedy, you wouldn’t be able to make it through.

So part of coping is ‘let me block out extraneous stuff so I can just get through.’ But there are health consequences.” Part of the problem lies in how racism is different than dealing with other tragedies like domestic abuse, death and relationship failures.

“There is a certain amount of helplessness,” adds Stevenson. “When will it be over? Will there be a time when we aren’t having this

conversation? There’s a sort of sadness or mourning that comes with that reality.

It just seems to go on and on. We’ve seen soon-to-be black parents finding out that they were going to have a boy and just start crying because, just knowing, that fear of a future that hasn’t come.”

But both Stevenson and Anderson are hopeful that therapies like theirs can benefit the black community on many levels, from the individual level of increasing selfesteem and confidence to broader socioeconomic and political impacts.

Capitalizing on the puberty time window, the researchers believe this is a key time for children to receive therapy, since it’s between childhood and adulthood and is an age when identity has not yet been solidified. “We want them to come out of the program not internalizing what’s in the outside world,” says Stevenson. “‘The rejection that’s happening is not about me, I don’t have to blame myself, I don’t have to swallow the rejection, even if it hurts, it’s not about me.’ is the message we want them to remember.”

Anderson adds that the intervention is also informing the field about racial stress and trauma. “In terms of inequality and discrimination, up to 90 percent of black people are shown saying, ‘Yes, this has happened to me in my lifetime,’ but yet there’s not a clinical symptomatology or diagnosis that suggests that these types of practices can turn into trauma.” She adds that the trauma is both personal experiences but also the vicarious experiences of witnessing things like the much publicized shootings of black people by authority figures.

“That’s helping us show the greater field that these discriminatory experiences lead to clinically significant problems in black families and interventions like EMBRace are a solution, which is an added bonus to what we’re trying to do.”

Among all the correlations, theories and studies, Anderson has a simple, yet lofty goal. “I want black families to be happy and healthy, that’s my life’s goal. Family to me isn’t just about one particular unit but the greater community. This healing is crucial for black families to live happy and healthy lives, because in every step they take, they’re under siege. So having an intervention on racism is key.”

With a goal of seeing 50 families by the end of next academic year, the center reports many families seeking out the program. And although 50 families is a very small fraction of the Philadelphia population, Anderson is optimistic that she can reach more via social media and through her “Mental Health Minute” vlog. n

hile all of the Olympic hype may be centered around Rio, the host of this year’s Summer Games, Philadelphia has its own place in Olympic history. Athletes from the Philly area have been participating in the Olympics since the 1900 Summer Games in Paris, and while some of these accomplishments over the past century haven’t made it to Olympics highlight reels, the folks at the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame want to highlight the feats of our local athletes.

PhillyGold!, an exhibit focusing on local Olympians, opened at Spike’s Trophies on Aug. 5, and includes artifacts from almost every summer Olympic competition since 1900. The exhibit features programs, magazines, and even gear used in the athletes’ events. Among the local athletes being featured are boxing hero Joe Frazier, 76ers favorites Charles Barkley and Andre Iguodala, Dobbins Tech graduate,and former Temple Owls coach Dawn Staley, and New Jersey native and World Cup champion midfielder Carli Lloyd.

Ajee’ Wilson Ajee’ Wilson, a native of Neptune, N.J., is making her Olympic debut this summer with the 800-meter race. A senior kinesiology major at Temple University, Wilson has already broken her fair share of records before making it to the Olympics: She ran the second-fastest 800 in the World Junior Championships, and also set the world record for the Distance Medley Relay at the World Relay Championships. An American woman hasn’t won a medal in this event since Kim Gallagher’s third-place time in Seoul in

Phillip Dutton Competing in his sixth Olympics (his third for Team USA), Phillip Dutton is on track to earn his first individual title. Born in New South Wales, Australia, Dutton moved to America in 1991 and now lives in Avondale. Dutton became a citizen in 2006 so that he could compete for his adoptive country, and has competed for Team USA in Beijing, London, and now Rio. While he competed for Team Australia, he earned two team gold medals in Atlanta (1996) and Sydney (2000). Will Rio be his time to bring home the gold for Team USA? Tune in to the equestrian events to find out.

Nia Ali West Catholic High School alumna Nia Ali will be competing in her first Olympic games in Rio. Ali will compete in the 100-meter hurdles, an event she previously took gold in at the World University Games in 2011, where she represented the University of Southern California. Ali placed third at the 2016 Olympic Trials, and won two consecutive gold medals at the World Indoor Championships in the 60-meter hurdles. Ali will surely continue her winning streak during Rio, and hopefully will win gold for Team USA.

Kyle Lowry A 2004 graduate of Cardinal Dougherty High School, point guard Kyle Lowry continued his Philadelphia basketball legacy during his two years with the Villanova Wildcats under Head Coach Jay Wright. After two seasons he was drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies and now plays for the Toronto Raptors. A two-time NBA All-Star, Lowry was chosen for the U.S. Men’s Basketball Team, and will hopefully help the team to win a third consecutive and 15th total gold medal.

Maggie Hogan Born in Philadelphia and raised in New Jersey, Maggie Hogan was the first American on the canoe sprint team to qualify for the Rio Olympics. Hogan didn’t begin competing in the canoe sprint until after graduating from college at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and has qualified for the International Canoe Federation Canoe Sprint World Championships since 2005. Although she narrowly missed the qualifications for the 2008 and 2012 Olympics and considered retiring from the sport, she began working with Coach Michele Eray and has since improved her finishes. Hogan’s perseverance is incredible, and she is definitely an athlete to watch at this summer’s games!

Katie Bam Montgomery County native Katie Bam is competing in her second Olympics as a striker on Team USA’s field hockey team. The most decorated field hockey player in America, Bam was named the 2010 Sportswoman of the Year by the Women’s Sports Foundation, an award previously given to two-time Olympic gold medalist Mia Hamm and four-time Olympic gold medalists Venus and Serena Williams. Bam is also a two-time gold medalist at the Pan-American Games, and will hopefully lead the Team USA field hockey team to the medal ceremony during this year’s Olympics.

Glenn Ochal A graduate of Roman Catholic High School, Glenn Ochal was born and raised in Philadelphia, where he began rowing in 2001 during his sophomore year of high school. Ochal helped lead Team USA Rowing to a bronze medal in the coxless four at the 2012 London Olym-

Runge will be swimming in the 4x200m freestyle relay, and has consistently placed in the top five in international competitions like the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships and the World Aquatic Championships.

Carli Lloyd World Cup champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist Carli Lloyd returns to the Olympics for her third time as a midfielder for Team USA. Following last year’s win against Japan for the FIFA World Cup, the South Jersey native and her fellow champions will take on the world’s best teams yet again in defense of their 2012 first-place title. n

“Because We Can” I f you’ve been down to South Street lately, you may have noticed “S.I.N. Stock” on the TLA marquee. If you’re up in the Northeast, there’s a playing card-themed billboard emblazoned with the same name at Frankford and Cottman Avenues.

Or, if you hang out by the Regional Rail train station out in Trevose, you may realize things have been a little quieter this summer.

Like most things ending with “Stock” nowadays, S.I.N. Stock is a music event, albeit one that started out as a backyard barbecue. It began at the Lower Bucks County home of Andy Caine, guitarist for Strength in Numbers—S.I.N. for short—and mostly features bands from Northeast Philadelphia.

Last year, it became a full-fledged festival in a lot near Caine’s house behind the train station. Free to the public, it featured vendor stations and a full-sized stage with a professional sound system and lighting truss, and a drum riser inside a halved 20-foot-wide pipe, all custom-built by the band for the one-day party.

“It was a full-scale operation,” said guitarist Mike Wilson. “We were talking about it, that we had to have a stage. And then the next thing you know, Andy’s asking, ‘Do you have access to a crane?’”

This year, they’re upping the ante again by moving it to the TLA and bringing with them bands from a section of Philly that, perhaps, is due for a little spotlight.

For the first time, the show is indoors, in the city, and the band rented a space rather than host it themselves. But, the idea behind it hasn’t changed.

“It’s a way of giving back to the fans, friends, family members that come out and support not only us, but the other local bands all year long,” singer Joe Mac explained. “You go to a bar, you pay a cover, you’re overpaying for your booze, you’re hanging out, you bring a date, you know, the next thing you know you’re in over $100, and you do that how many times a year for us?”

In return, S.I.N. Stock features the titular band with groups they’ve played with recently, with all the musicians ponying up for food and beer. This year, they all chipped in for the venue rather than the refreshments but it’s still their way, said Mac, of saying, “‘Thank you, thank you, thank you, what can we do?’”

He’s been in the band since they formed around 2010—details can get hazy—but the story goes back much further. Originally from Kensington, he was friends with Wilson, Caine and bassist Frank Bosak, who played together on and off since the ‘80s.

Meanwhile, the formal groups had videos in rotation locally on MTV, and took out ads on the channel for shows at onceprominent rock clubs like The Cellblock in Bensalem and The Chestnut Cabaret in the city.

This decade, when Mac started hanging out and coming up with lyrics, a new band was born. The songs are often crude, with opuses like “Bend ‘Em Spread ‘Em” and “The Shocker,” the title of which can be explained with a potentially NSFW visit to Urban Dictionary.

They’re all in good, sophomoric fun, and, for what it’s worth, previous S.I.N. Stocks consistently featured female-led acts like the Bridge, Cicada Jade and Allie Carroll. At the least, the lyrics are backed by catchy riffs courtesy of Caine and old-

The band, rounded out by drummer Steve Zameito, brings their own, oldschool mentality to the proceedings. Wilson, they say, put it best after last year’s S.I.N. Stock.

After weeks of planning and construction on their stage, they got up early the next morning after closing out the night to tear it all down so it could be used by construction companies on Monday.

When asked, in 110-degree heat, why they went through all that trouble, Wilson laughed: “Because we can.”

That mentality brings them to the TLA— “What could it hurt to make a phone call?” recalled Mac—and also got them a billboard. It’s above Pat’s Music, where some of the musicians playing this year work and others stop in for gear or to chat, and catty-corner to Reale’s Bar and Grille,

where S.I.N. first played and other bands formed.

“When we found out the billboard was not only feasible but we could get it in a prime location, it was a no-brainer,” said Mac. “We could put it on top of Pat’s, one of the birthplaces of a lot of bands, and when you’re at the open mic night at Reale’s, you can walk out and stare at it.”

The Northeast isn’t often recognized for its music scene, but the musicians are there. War horses like Mike LeCompt and AJ Slick still fill bars with classic rock and blues covers, and are featured frequently at farmer’s markets and other events at Frankford and Cottman. They, along with formal tribute bands, also draw hundreds of people every week in the summer to free concerts in nearby Pennypack Park.

Ironically, the one classic rock cover band in S.I.N. Stock this year, the Dead Leeves, are all local high schoolers. They’re kids who grew up dreaming of playing Pennypack Park, noted guitarist and singer Nick Zabrowski, only to bypass that and go straight to the TLA. There’s also a handful of bands making their own music, like the Aberdeans, led by Ryan Cleary, who fuse contemporary indie folk with ‘90s grunge and play out as far as New Hope. Or Rawq Savy, which features a drummer, singer and two bass players, one of which is a dead ringer for Harry Shearer in Spinal Tap—with no irony intended.

They’re the groups that S.I.N. brings together when they barnstorm places like Sweeney’s in Somerton or Curran’s in Tacony. They’re places that usually feature one cover band for the night, but S.I.N. regularly gets in with a few other bands in tow—and guaranteed pay for everyone on the bill—thanks to some simple economic maneuvering.

“The number-one reason we get hired is because we pack the place with hardcore drinkers,” laughed Mac. “They want to sell beer, we sell them a lot of beer.”

It’s a winning formula, proven if nowhere else than at an establishment that banned them after cursing too much, only to let them back, ban them again, and then have them return as they kept packing the place. But even if bar ring gets S.I.N. in the door, it’s that sense of camaraderie—or strength in numbers, as the band’s name implies—that truly keep the shows coming, and moving further into the city.

“It’s all friendship first, with us supporting other bands and them supporting us,” he said. “It’s a community of musicians, pure old-school, down and dirty, in-thetrenches rock and roll.” n

EAR READERS: I’m on vacation for the next three weeks—but you won’t be reading old columns while I’m away. You’ll be getting a new column every week, all of them written by Dan Savage, none of them written by me.

“Other sports writers often tell me they enjoyed reading my latest column,” Dan Savage told me in an email, “but when they show me the article, it’s one of your sex-advice columns. The joke is going to be on them this time around when it’s actually my advice!”

I’m a straight guy in my 40s, and I’ve been with my wife for more than 20 years. I’m incredibly attracted to my wife. Recently, I’ve been a bit frustrated with us not having sex as frequently as I’d like. So I broached the subject with her.

I tried to be easygoing about it, but maybe I fucked that up. Basically, I told her that I fantasize about her daily and would like to have sex more often. I cited two examples of frustration.

Two weeks ago, I came on to her and tried to initiate, but we had a dinner party to go to and she didn’t want to be late. One week ago, I was flirting with her but was rebuffed because we were going out to dinner and… she wanted to go to dinner more than fuck, I guess. I made my wife cry by bringing this up. End result is that she doesn’t want to fuck more than we already do, there’s nothing I can do to make sex more appealing for her, and it hurt her for me to bring the subject up at all. I dropped it, apologized, and moved on. I don’t want to coerce her into anything (I want her to want me), so here we are. How can I communicate better in the future? —Using My Words

Communication in any relationship is key. On the basketball court, one of the first things young players are taught is to communicate effectively with their teammates. They’re required to call out plays, offensive assignments, and defensive rotations in order to prevent breakdowns and keep the system working smoothly.

In relationships, the same principles hold true. You have to be able to effectively communicate with your partner in order to keep both parties happy. And just like everything else in life, timing is everything.

First, I’d make sure you communicate your needs at a time other than when you’ve just been rebuffed. You’re then likely to be less emotional, think more rationally, and more effectively explain your needs without applying added pressure. Second, I’d try making

your next move when other plans are not on the table. In both the examples you mention, UMW, the timing of your request appears to have been an issue for her.

Schedule some time for an intimate dinner at home or cap off an exciting evening out on the town with romantic advances. If she does not respond to your improved efforts, then she’s not being a good teammate. A successful relationship is when both members’ needs are met, not just one.

I’m a 36-year-old bisexual female. I’ve been dating my nice Midwestern boyfriend for about four and a half years. Within the first few dates, I brought up nonmonogamy. I was pretty sure from past experiences that long-term monogamy wasn’t going to be for me. I get bored, I like attention, and I love the chase. He was against it. I thought, okay, we have a lot of other positive stuff going for us and maybe he would reconsider in the future. I feel like I’ve lost a part of my sexual self—no adventures, no three-ways, I miss girls, etc. I feel that what I want—newness, some kink he isn’t trained in, being with a girl, etc.—he can’t give me. So I brought up opening up the relationship again. My thought is I could get what I need/want and get my engine revving again, and hopefully bring that excitement and spark back to our relationship. I don’t think I can handle the relationship as it is now, though, and this was my suggestion to try to make it stronger. I feel like I’ve already ended the relationship just by bringing this up. Are we doomed? —A Girl Has Needs Your question reminds me of a topic that’s currently top of mind in my profession: NBA free agency. In the basketball world, it’s the time of year when teams can go after the best available prospects not under contract and offer them a deal to join their team. Organizations heavily vet these players, talking to their former teammates, coaches, and others to make sure that their values match up. There’s nothing worse than being locked into a five-year guaranteed contract with a guy who doesn’t fit with your franchise. Actually, on second thought, there is—getting married to a guy who doesn’t share the same relationship goals and values.

If your boyfriend is someone who has no interest in open relationships—and from all indications, he’s doesn’t—odds are he’s never going to be happy in that type of situation.

And if you’re never going to be happy with monogamy, then you need to find someone whose values match your own. Unfortunately, some people are destined to play man-to(wo)man, while others are more satisfied in a 2-3 zone. n
