hen the Philadelphia Folk Festival rolls around, that’s when you know summer’s practically on the wane, still holding on for dear life to welcome the scores of folk-music fans and their families as they converge onto the rolling stretch of Schwenksville’s Old Pool Farm. There, the Philadelphia Folk Society’s returning for four nights and three full days of non-stop revelry, music, workshops, activities for the kids and, of course, outdoor camping—so the fun’s literally over only when you lay your head down each night. Eight different stages will showcase dozens of diverse acts for this, this fest’s 54th iteration, with 35 of those performers coming straight from the roster of the Philadelphia Music Co-Op, ensuring that local emerging artists get their time to shine—among them Andrea Nardello, Black Horse Motel, Cynthia G. Mason, John Mallinen, Ladybird, Man About a Horse, No Good Sister and Silverton. Thursday night gets warmed up courtesy of Tall Heights, Linda Ortega and recent Philly Weekly coverboys Low Cut Connie, so expect to dance the dust off your shoes. Friday morning, Philadelphia Folk Society co-founder
Philly’s favorite summer happy hour series returns to liven up your Wednesday afternoons. Enjoy drink specials and discounted food at more than 80 Center City hot spots, including Chima, Sampan, Opa, U-Bahn, Woody’s and more. Through Sept.
George Britton and his uber-talented children will kick off the hapenings in the Culture Tent, taking the stage for the first time in decades, joining inlaw Peter Young to perform as The Young Kings of Britton. And folk may get the marquee genre focus, but the range of good music on deck’s as expansive as the host farmland itself: Catch sets featuring Levee Drivers, Hoot and Hellmouth, Chris Kasper, Kuf Knotz (who’ll also be joining Lizanna Knott as Knot Together), PhillyBloco, The Wallace Brothers and Band of Rivals. All that, and we haven’t even got to the headliners: blues guitarist Selwyn Birchwood, Americana darling Parker Millsap, Shakey Graves and the main man himself, Arlo Guthrie, all on Friday. Saturday night boasts The Lee Boys, Bruce Cockburn, Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, followed by Irish Mythen. Smoked grits at Heritage
Northern Liberties’ neighborhood restaurants, like the wood-warmed, live jazzenhanced Heritage, are giving both new area residents and its longtime dwellers more and more reason to swell their chests up with pride. The expansive, open-area hideaway’s got a 36-tap beer selection, killer cocktails, a charming and diverse menu—oh, and one more thing: the best grits you’ve ever eaten in your life. Seriously. Heritage’s locallysourced, course-ground porridge, as rich and buttery as the cheese grits you cook for family on weekends, spikes the succulent, fork-tender rabbit sausage brunch plate to heights far beyond its lofty ceiling, all thanks to those tantalizing notes of smokiness. Thankfully, Chef Sean Magee’s seen fit to use those same grits for the luscious rectangular cakes served with juicy shrimp and a poached egg—and even at dinner, when the rabbit sausage returns, on a bigger plate, beneath a pile of seasoned sauteed spinach, pickled turnip slices and a light jus. Now, if we could just convince owners Jason Evenchik and the affable Terry Leach to add those bad boys to the spot’s side-dish offerings, all would be right with the world. The thing about Lloyd is that it’s everything you want in your favorite bar: Roomy yet cozy, inviting, with a cool, attentive bar and wait staff who know both the spirits and the solids on offer like the back of their tattooed hands. There’s lots to love here, but let’s start with the sublime bar snacks, which range from the simple to the sinful: Crunchy fried duck rinds served either Buffalo-style or coated in General Tso’s sauce; BLT sliders with wood-smoked Applewood bacon; creamy cavatappi mac and cheese with several topping options—among them, pork belly or spicy chorizo. For those who eschew meat, they’ve got crispy fried deviled eggs, low-salt chickpea fries, pickled vegetables and mac and cheese additions like basil pesto and asparagus that’ll definitely liven up an already-cheesetastic belly filler. Those kale leaves are often tough, and their bitterness, if not mitigated with splashes of acidity or other flavors, may make you put down the forker faster than you would if you were consuming other leafy greens. Robots on the move
The world lamented hitchBOT’s poor cute face—while over at Penn, Philly Geek Award finalist Michelle Johnson is busy developing robots to help people. BY STEPHEN H. SEGAL
E
very year, the Philly Geek Awards, presented by Geekadelphia at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, honor the city’s brainiest high achievers in categories that range from the primarily tech-focused, such as Startup of the Year and Streaming Media Project of the Year, to the more futuristically-artsy, like Game of the Year and Comic Creator of the Year. This go-’round, the awards—which will hit the Academy stage on Saturday—come close on the heels of one of the geekiest news scandals ever to upload from Philly streets to the CNN ticker: the beheading of hitchBOT, a Canadian robot that had been sent travelling around the world by a pair of scientists curious to explore how humans would interact with it. While the hitchBOT story has evolved from “Philly’s full of rage, so of course someone beat up the friendly robot” to “This kinda looks like maybe some jerks on YouTube think they can get more famous,” there hasn’t been much public comment from Philadelphia’s own robotics community. So we reached out to Michelle Johnson, Ph.D., who directs the Rehabilitation Robotics Lab at Penn and is one of the Philly Geek Award finalists for 2015 Scientist of the Year, for her thoughts on ’bot life these days in the City of Brotherly Love.

What makes Penn a good place to do this sort of robotics research? What’s your community of scientific peers like on campus? Penn has a great, supportive community: world-class hospital for adults and children, and with the new Pennsylvania Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine (a collaboration with Good Shepherd Penn Partners), we have a concentrated rehabilitation facility. The work I do is cross-disciplinary: I straddle the schools of medicine and engineering, so it helps that Penn also has an outstanding robotics community, GRASP Lab, so that my lab can be a part of both.
You specialize in robot-assisted physical rehabilitation. How does that work? What role can robots play in rehab; where do they fit in the equation between patient and therapist? These robots are developed to provide adaptive and personalized therapy to stroke patients or patients who need help. We develop algorithms so if the patient is weak, the robot does more, and if the patient is stronger, the robot [backs off]. The robots

Isaac Asimov, the science fiction author who first coined the word “robotics” back in the ’40s, lived in West Philly for several years during WWII while working at the Navy Yard, and wrote several of his classic robot stories while he was here. Do robotics researchers in University City today feel a sense of Asimovian legacy present in their work? Yes. We all follow the three laws of Asimov. [Editor’s note: In short—robots mustn’t hurt people; must obey people; and, otherwise, should safeguard their
own continued functioning.] While he wrote primarily about humanoids living among us, my goal is not only focused on humanoids but on developing assistive and therapeutic robots that can “live” seamlessly among us.
So, the topic of the moment: hitchBOT. Even if, as now seems likely, the attack on hitchBOT didn’t come from a random local but someone looking to gain attention for their viral videos—well, it’s still lousy. How do you react to seeing someone vandalize a robot project, even one that’s perhaps more cultural than technical, for their own selfish reasons? Things happen. From a social point of view, the scientist had hitchBOT in a social experiment. A hard lesson was that it can be dangerous to hitchhike: There are not- so-nice people out there. So, in the end, although it was unfortunate, I think the unexpected always happens in research—and as scientists, we have to be prepared for that and learn from it. n

This sour wheat ale kicks up notes of funky barnyards and horse blankets covered in Sour Patch Kids. It’s Good Good
Same Same is as close to real Vietnamese street food as you’ll likely get in Philly. By Brian Freedman @WineUpdate
I
f you heard someone use the phrase “same same” for the first time—as in, Those two things are same same—you’d think the repetition was being used for emphasis, wouldn’t you? You’d think the phrase meant “really truly exactly the same.” At least, that’s what tourists visiting Pacific Rim countries have often thought, upon hearing English-speaking locals use that phrase. But it’s actually more subtle than that. “Same same” means: Those two things are not exactly the same, yet there’s a deep essential way in which they are. Happily, there’s no need for linguistic confusion at Same Same, the phenomenal new restaurant in Northern Liberties where Koo Zee Doo used to be. Specializing in the street food of Ho Chi Minh City, this worthy addition to Philadelphia’s South East Asian food conversation is the brainchild of Chef Chad Kubnanoff and his wife, Thuy. In addition to stints in some of America’s top restaurants—Daniel, Alinea, more—Kubnanoff worked in Vietnam’s largest city for nearly six years, honing his skills with the country’s legendarily complex and healthful cuisine, and opened his NoLibs spot in May. The name, he explained to me during a follow-up phone call, is a reference to the fact that the “food is the same same as Vietnam, but different,” he said. “We’re trying to be as authentic as possible, but [with the] understanding that’s impossible.” But that doesn’t mean that his food is in any way inferior to the real thing. Not even close. Banh phong tom prawn crackers make fantastically crisp and savory scoops for a bright herb dip, sliced through with the well-developed acidity of daikon and carrot-pickling brine that’s been reduced down to a caramel and then hefted up with mayonnaise, lime juice, jalapeños cilantro, Thai basil, mint and more. Cha gio heo pork and taro spring rolls are delirious, with a 50-50 blend of ground pork and taro seasoned simply yet carefully with garlic, black pepper and fish sauce. Perked up with herbs and pickles, they run the risk of being finished before everyone at the table has a chance to tuck in. Banh mi, whose quality around town seems to have diminished recently as its popularity has sky-
rocketed, was here anchored by tender chicken that’s been marinated overnight with lemongrass, sugar, shallots, fish sauce, chili and chicken fat. That last addition, Kubnanoff told me, reflects some of the Daniel and Alinea mentality coming through in his cooking; its use in place of the more traditional canola oil enriches the chicken enough to make you wonder why you’ve never had it before. With that bird’s supporting cast of scallions, pickled vegetables, jalapeños, cilantro and a slather of mayonnaise—all of it hugged inside a roll from Washington Avenue’s Ba Le—this is easily one of my favorite iterations of the beloved sandwich in the city. Of course, at $9.50, it better be, but I have no problem with that price when each bite is this damned good.

Pork confit—“not a technique they would ever use” in Vietnam, Kubnanoff said—is first rubbed down with pho spices like star anise, black cardamom, cinnamon and more, and gets its star turn in a doit-yourself lettuce- and mustard-leaf wrap. It’s also show-stopping when thin-sliced and grilled, then served in a vibratingly fresh bowl of rice noodles. You can wash it all down with any of the excellent teas or ice drinks whipped up at the counter— the lime shake is pretty much perfect—or with a beer or wine that you’ve brought on your own. Whatever you use to slake your thirst, and whichever dishes you order, it’s all unfailingly pleasant and sneakily complicated, yet never unnecessarily so. With this kind of value (I fed my family for less than $40 here), friendliness, and flat-out great flavor, it’s definitely not the same-same-old thing. n

Not my kind of Woman Despite being blessed with a sprinkling of dope tracks, Jill Scott’s latest isn’t all it could be. bY bILL cHENEvERT @BillChenevert
W
hen I first heard “Closure” off Jill Scott’s three-week-old album, Woman, I was buggin’. Loved everything about it: the playful production, the food-friendly details, the spoken-word condescension. Unfortunately, the great track would turn out to be unrepresentative of her fifth LP overall. When we haven’t had a new record from her in four years, and then we get this, it’s a bit of a letdown—at least, for hardcore fans. Woman’s opener, “Wild Cookie,” is a fabulous fable of the cookie as a cootchie with a life of its own. It’s a fun, playful “Jilltro” like we’ve come to know and love. But then “Prepared,” “Run, Run, Run” and “Can’t Wait” quickly divert Woman into grown-up, no-rushing R&B territory. It’s clear quickly that there’d be little to no effort to make conventionally modern hits here—and that’s okay! But the dynamism and range of energies that’s so vital to previously successful Jill Scott LPs is noticeably missing. The next few solid tracks are enough to make a not-that-exciting album still at least tolerable. “Lighthouse” has a slow, catchy rhythm that aims at exactly what lighthouses can provide: solid, ceaseless guidance, an oasis in a sea of despair. “Fool’s Gold” is easily one of its strongest songs, a slinky, smart groove that dopely portrays that conclusion so many of us finally reach—we were fooling ourselves chasing after that literal fool. “Cruisin” is another track that makes a valiant effort to make Woman exceptional, an intoxicating, finger-snapping, head-bobbing burner that reminds me of her previous record’s “Le BOOM Vent Suite.” Sandwiched between “You Don’t Know” and “Say Thank You,” however, it loses its inherent momentum. Both of those are extra-slow love notes to old-school production techniques and bluesy elements that’ve been mined successfully for years. They just feel like tracks for superfans, honestly, which I basically am. But they don’t stand out in the slightest. The record ends with another super-slow, choirkissed and slightly gospel number, “Back Together,” followed-up by “Coming To You,” a horns-heavy and kind of Cee Lo-flavored nod to ‘70s funk and glamour. It’s an odd combination of vibes, but the
latter is, strangely, one of album’s better cuts; it just seems out of place in succession. Then finally, we get “Jahraymecofasola,” a joyous beauty of a B-side that feels like it’s right in Scott’s wheelhouse. “Beautiful Love,” featuring BJ The Chicago Kid, is a chill outro, with a guest vocal that has Frank Ocean flavors and harps on one of the things I love most about Jill: Her unending awe at the magic of deep and powerful romance. Obviously, the bar’s high here: Scott’s 2000 debut, Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1, is a legit masterpiece, and the 2011 surprise powerhouse, The Light of the Sun, is completely packed with jewels. I’ll admit that the two records in between—Words and Sounds Vol. 2 and Vol. 3—have never dug their claws into me like the first and fourth. Woman boasts a few tracks that will likely work their way into my Jill Jams Greatest Hits mental playlist. here’s just something about Pennsylvania alt-rock bands and rhythmic genre-crossing, isn’t there? At the same time Philly’s G. Love & Special Sauce were here mixing up their ‘90s blend of blues-pop and hip-hop, Rusted Root was getting busy over in Pittsburgh, bringing together an outsized posse of eclectic percussionists with African, Latin and Middle Eastern influences to send singer Michael Glabicki’s achingly resonant voice soaring on waves of earnest hippie love. Two decades later, the ensemble’s a little different, but the band’s groove and power remain as strong as ever; expect them to preview tunes from their next album when they play Coda on Sunday. | Sun., Aug. 16, 9:00pm. $25-$40.

Fox’s new Fantastic Four is painfully lacking in Marvel magic. by ZAKI HASAN @ZakisCorner

onestly, people. It really shouldn’t be this hard. With this week’s release of Fox’s Fantastic Four, we now have three separate origin movies for Marvel Comics’ First Family in just over 20 years. Less a bold new vision of a wellknown brand than a mercenary attempt by Fox to retain its contractual rights to some prized Marvel IP, this take on the team is long on mood and somberness, and short on the optimism and joie de vivre that have been a hallmark of Stan Lee & Jack Kirby’s comic-book creation since their introduction in 1962. Directed by Josh Trank, who made such a splash with Chronicle a few years ago, this latest Fantastic Four works so hard to go so far off-model, yet ends up with something so numbingly unoriginal, one wonders why they bothered at all. Featuring a script by Trank, Jeremy Slater and Simon Kinberg, the film has teenage prodigy Reed Richards (Miles Teller) unwittingly discover a portal to another dimension, and subsequently invited to join a mysterious think tank by scientist Franklin Storm (Reg E. Cathay) and his daughter Sue (Kate Mara). Reed works with Sue, her brother Johnny (Michael B. Jordan) and the brilliantbut-disgruntled Victor Von Doom (Toby Kebbell) to find a way to transfer matter between the two dimensions. When the group succeeds and it looks like the government will step in and take over, Reed, Johnny, and Victor, along with Reed’s best friend Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell) decide to beat them to it and take the first steps into the new dimension themselves. Their initial joy quickly turns to terror as things go awry: Victor is presumed dead after being subsumed by some kind of green energy, while Reed, Johnny, and Ben materialize back on Earth having been altered by exposure to the other-dimensional radiation. Reed’s limbs have become like putty, Johnny’s body is now enveloped in flame, and Ben is covered with a rock-like sheath. And though Sue didn’t go along with them, her exposure from attempting to retrieve them has left her fading in and out of the visual spectrum. Naturally the government soon steps in, and while Reed escapes from containment, the other three are put to use to serve as military assets. When the portal is re-opened one year later and another team goes through, they learn that Victor isn’t as dead as they thought. Faster than you can say “fantastic,” it’s up to Reed, Sue, Ben and Johnny to overcome their distrust of each other and band together.

ENTERTAINING.
It’s hard to figure out where to even start when deconstructing this thing. It doesn’t work as an adaptation of a beloved property, nor does it work as a completely new interpretation. While the special effects used to bring the titular team to life are probably the best we’ve ever seen, everything about the pacing and story construction is off. The first hour of the 90-minute runtime is devoted to methodically (some might say excruciatingly) laying out the origin before barreling into a last half hour that hurriedly sets up the big bad and explodey final confrontation (complete with requisite “ominous blue beam in the sky”) almost as an afterthought. It’s as though the creatives made two thirds of a weak sci-fi movie before abruptly remembering that superheroes were supposed to be involved somehow. As far as the stars go, Teller is fine, but I’m not sure what’s gained from recasting the confident man of science Reed Richards, a genius patrician with grey temples to boot, into an awkward teen in the Peter Parker mold. The rest of the cast all put in more effort than anyone should expect given what they’re trapped in, but there’s no reality in any of it, just a rote, pre-fab feeling to their interactions. Poor Toby Kebbell has it the worst of them all. So brilliant as Koba in last year’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Kebbell spends the last third entirely unrecognizable in some kind of metal-gauze thing that’s meant to evoke iconic villain Doctor Doom (minus the nobility, motivation and characterization—seriously, you’ll be pining for Julian McMahon’s version after this). Perhaps most frustrating is how, while over in Marvel Studios’ hands, Captain America, Thor—even Ant-Man, for goodness sake!—have been brought to the screen successfully, retaining the essence of their comic book counterparts, here we have a version of the Fantastic Four that borders on unrecognizable.
