Philly’s BBQ Fest P

hilly’s first BBQ Festival is heading to Citizens Bank Park, serving up the best BBQ Philly has to offer. The fest will feature more than 40 vendors, including McFadden’s, Bull’s BBQ, Big Bad Wolf, Philly Blind Pig and The Twisted Tail.

The amount of each BBQ sample will depend on the kind of signature sample item you reach for; ribs, pulled pork, brisket, chicken, burnt ends, wings, and a few popular BBQ side dishes will all be yours to chow down on. If you’d like to try your hand—or more accurately, your stomach—in a rib eating competition, then throw your name into the competition as soon as you arrive. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are also available so that everyone can take part in the fest.

The ballpark will be decked out with a little something for everyone: Food trucks, carnival games, a giant craft beer garden, a rib eating competition and live music. Both ticket packages—either the Half Rack or the Full Rack—supply 10 vouchers a piece, but you can always purchase more onsite during the event. Also, regardless

of which ticket package you decide to purchase, both packages get you two Phillies Game Tickets to redeem throughout the season, anytime after July 31.

Each guest will also receive a commemorative apron, in an attempt to keep things tidy as you munch down on some BBQ. Don’t get that apron too messy, though! VIP ticket holders have a few great photo opts, so stick around for your VIP Rooftop Access and snag pictures with the Phillie Phanatic, World Champion Manager Charlie Manuel and the 2008 World Series Trophy.

In between bites, head over to the stage to catch live music from Chicago 9, Stellar Mojo, and Philbilly. Radio Hosts 97.5 The Fanatic, 93.3 WMMR, 102.9 WMGK, and 95.7 Ben-Fm will also be in attendance, so the stadium will definitely be filled with enough music to satisfy your ears and enough BBQ to tame your tastebuds. —ASHLEY

FDR Protests

T

his isn’t a story about riots, about unlawful crowds and an overly aggressive police response to that. As we go to print on Tuesday, the protests of Monday, the first day of the Democratic National Convention were organized, they were impassioned despite the unrelenting sun and oppressive high 90 degree temperatures, and they were peaceful—with most demonstrators committing to coming back tomorrow and the next day, until the convention concludes.

It’s a fairly quiet trip on the subway from City Hall to AT&T Station for most delegates. There’s some grumbles about the heat, “I’m all for democracy and history, but Philadelphia in the summer? Someone was just not thinking right when they picked this place.” Many delegates looked around to read protest signs from the few demonstrators who weren’t already with their protest groups. It was 4pm after all, and protests had been going on all morning and afternoon from City Hall straight down Broad Street where the tall, temporary fencing blocked off Pattison Avenue and the so called “convention-land” of the Wells Fargo Center. “That Delegate Life,” as the Snapchat filter called it, seemed fairly quiet. But the damp cool mellow of the subway gave way to aboveground and a sea of people, signs and shouting—all just a few feet, and a fence, away. Still the chaos seemed more like a spectator sport, until one turn beyond the walls of 8 | Philly Weekly | July 28 - August 3, 2016 | phillyweekly.com

the subway station, where things got a little crazy. Passengers were met with a fleet of heavily armored motorcycle police and what appeared to be Secret Service security in traditionally non-police suits. If you aren’t credentialed when you reach this point out of the subway station, you’re pretty much chopped liver. “Get to the side” a man all in black sporting a bullet proof vest and making his already large frame even more intimidating, shouted. “What side though?” It was all happening so quickly with so many people in front and behind, it’s hard not just to stand paralyzed. “No credentials. Get to the side” he commanded with a louder bark and a shove to the air. You soon realize that if you don’t listen, and listen fast, something bad is going to happen. After an intimidating start, and with the credentialed peeps safely separated from the sweatier masses, a line of smiling Philadelphia police greeted protesters with, “Have a great time,” like a Dave & Buster’s hostess, while creating a human barrier preventing anyone from going any other way than out to Broad Street.

And then you’re just immersed in people—a sea of people. If the convention looked like a Rolling Stones concert, outside the Wells Fargo was the Phish show: patchouli, tie dye, weed aroma, dreads and fringe. But there were plenty of non-hippy/hipsters too. Although the vast majority of protestors were white, their ages ran the gamut, from

toddlers riding in carts decked out with Bernie slogans to retirees. But that’s not to say there was no diversity. Black Lives Matter, Black Men for Bernie, Latinos for Sanders, Haitians against Obama were all represented, with even a few international visitors. A family from Tel Aviv came to see how much better the “Left” gets treated in their estimation than back home in Israel.

Like a school cafeteria, the groups had somehow remained in separate areas of the protest region on Broad Street. You had your Christian preachers on the far end against the temporary fencing at Pattison Avenue, peace demonstrators sitting in the grass, and the Bernie Sanders protesters hanging mostly against the fencing that lined AT&T Station, with a large showing from Democracy Spring.

Each time a credentialed group, the men mostly in suits or J.crew-ish casual Friday-wear and the women in matching suits or polyester dresses, walked by on the restricted access side of the fence, the demonstrators, mostly in sweat drenched T-shirts and shorts, would erupt in chats, “Not for sale. Not for sale.” The contrast was a striking one, as some of the credentialed acknowledged the crowd, some opened up their phone cameras, but many kept their heads straight and seemingly ignored the fact that hundreds on the other side of the fence were chanting at them: “Show me what democ-

racy looks like. This is what democracy looks like” “I am here protesting the injustices of our government,” says Jeff who came to the protests from California. He was handing out roses in the grass when he came over to talk. “I came here because I have a 2-year old and a 5-year-old, little girls, that I can’t look in their eyes and tell them we’re leaving them the best planet that we can leave them. The police have been really, really great. The people have been amazing, they’re full of love. I’m hoping more eyes will be open to the truth that is the corrupt government and the greed is killing our planet at a very fast rate. We don’t have another 30 years, we don’t, we have to change it now.” A union heavy equipment operator, Jeff explains that the recent email leak scandal within the Democratic party has solidified his stance. “A year ago, I was Bernie or Bust and then after all the apparent fraud and possible fraud and the WikiLeaks and all the stuff right now that may or may not be true, that was enough for me to decide that the Democratic party that I’ve always been in is not my home. I’ve always voted Democrat because that’s what I’ve been told to do, but I won’t out of fear ever again.”

An impromptu march by one of the Christian groups arose down the middle of Broad Street. “We need to be saved.” It’s met with other protesters joining in to have their say on the matter. “Shut the fuck up.”

With a variety of opposing messages all converging together (Bernie shirts could easily have been confused with the pro-Trump “Socialism Sucks” tees others were wearing) there was bound to be some exchanges. A few got heated. Second Amendment supporters, a group of six middle-aged white men, carrying “Blue Lives Matter” posters were confronted by a group of African-American college-aged girls, for a debate/conversation that lasted about ten minutes. One of the women in that discussion was Julie, a Temple student at the demonstrations doing research work, rather than protesting. She thought more discourse between the divergent groups could be a good thing. “With one of the guys, it went really well, he understood what we were saying about the logic behind Black Lives Matter,” she says. “The other didn’t really want to hear it. He wasn’t very open to understanding what his own sign meant. I hope to see a lot more discourse. I think that’s how you get to solutions. Even the discussion I just had with that gentleman ended with a new revelation for him. And I think if everybody could engage in those kind of discussions things would move a lot faster toward the right direction.”

For his part, Tim, the man in the debate, did not want to discuss it afterward. “I’m not giving any interviews.

She was just making a point that they weren’t exclusively saying Black Lives Matter, I think we disagree with that.”

But for the most part, this was a Bernie protest. Lynn, a teacher from Illinois came to the protest to urge the delegates to reconsider their nomination. Starting to cry at the fence she explains her reasoning, “I see kids growing up with asthma because their air is so dirty, I see kids that come to school hungry. Hillary is not going to change anything, she is part of the system that is currently in place, she’s part of the status quo, they’ve already been in office, they didn’t help people, they hurt people, they threw more people into poverty. I hope that it does because these delegates are representing democracy not just the Democratic party. The Democratic party cheated during this election season, we all know that.

They broke their own rules.” Wiping away tears she says her experience at the protests over the last few days has been positive. “Everything has been peaceful, everyone has been taking care of each other. I was walking around yesterday passing out water to people. These are people that care about the quality of life beyond their own.” n

On the Floor at the DNC

T

he first night of the National Democratic Convention at the Wells Fargo Center on Monday night wasn’t all that different than an arena concert.

Crowds made pilgrimages through the parking lots and stood in line for overpriced beer. People took selfies and posted them on Facebook and Twitter.

They filed in and out of the concourse depending on the speaker, like going to the bathroom when the band plays a deep cut. There was even a fully-stocked merch booth with $25 Hillary Clinton T-shirts.

Of course, this ain’t no party, disco or fooling around.

This is the moment when the Democratic party sets its platform and formally launches its campaign against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

There’s an army of people making sure it goes right— or at least their way. Standing on the floor during the speeches, all the little actions and comments overlooked by the TV cameras are noticeable.

Staffers hand out signs for certain speakers 20 minutes before they go on, in case you were wondering how all those “Michelle” poles came out of nowhere as the First Lady took the stage.

Meanwhile, a single person yelling for Bernie Sanders during Michelle Obama’s speech is shushed by a nearby delegate: “It’s the first lady! Show some respect!” Another person is unhappy with the Bernie sign they got: “This one says ‘Bernie for President!’ I don’t want that one. I want ‘A Future We Can Believe In.’” Despite Obama’s knockout speech, Sanders was the star of the night. Comedian Sarah Silverman may have called out his supporters earlier in the evening, but ultimately it was the Vermont Senator who had the last laugh—and the biggest cheers.

By now you’ve seen the clip: Silverman, who’d been an outspoken Sanders supporter for much of his campaign, made the comment while sharing the stage with comedian-turned-Senator Al Franken. The two were stalling as the stage was set up for Paul Simon to perform “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”

Silverman stepped out of the spotlight a few times to confer with the stage crew as Franken ad-libbed. And, after a brief pause, she spoke. “To the Bernie or bust people, you’re being ridiculous,” she said, barely cracking what seemed like a perpetual smile on her face.

The line earned her an immediate, loud round of boos from the pockets of Sanders supporters throughout the arena. Her argument echoed many other speakers’ reasonings: Hillary Clinton’s tough, qualified—perhaps “the only person overqualified to be President,” Silverman said—and if she’s the Democratic candidate, then she’s the one to unite behind to defeat Donald Trump.

It wasn’t enough to quell Sanders supporters, who still yelled and booed throughout the night’s speeches. They also led the loudest cheers of the night, by far, when Bernie took the stage. Walking on to Simon and Garfunkel’s “America,” which was the centerpiece of an early Sanders TV commercial, he was the only person who had to wait for the crowd to die down before he could speak.

Ironically, he got the most resounding cheers than anyone else when he declared his own support for Clinton. But the crowd was even louder when he said he was looking forward to their presence at roll call the next day, alluding to the fact that delegates could still cast votes for him, despite Clinton being the presumptive nominee.

Sanders’ supporters were already galvanized by an email leak over the weekend purporting to show how the DNC conspired to derail his campaign. And, in an election cycle that pundits, voters and candidates up and down the tickets are considered one of the most unpredictable and important in recent history, they seemed energized again, perhaps by the slim chance that their candidate could pull off a dark horse win against Clinton.

The roll call occurs after this article goes to press, but just the mention of that opportunity felt like the biggest moment of the night. Even by Wednesday morning, when this comes out, it’s still enough to say that it was the first big moment of the week, and a sign of the uncertain times ahead. n

Equality Forum A

s the Democratic National Convention descends upon Philadelphia, so too does another important summit: Equality Forum.

Equality Forum is an annual summit in Philadelphia focused around the LGBT community. Featuring panelists including prominent legal professionals, openly gay politicians and reporters and publishers in the LGBT community, Equality Forum helps set the goals and tone of the LGBT community going into the next year.

Malcolm Lazin, founder and executive director of Equality Forum, has seen the gathering grow and evolve over the last two decades. “It got started back in 1993 at a moment in time where there were only gay pride parades,” Lazin says. “And the founders believed that what we were seeing was the beginning of a civil rights movement and, as such, what we needed to be doing was pivoting to a focus on organizations and civil rights issues.” Lazin says Equality Forum is now the longest standing LGBT national and international civil rights summit.

And the timing is no coincidence. This year, Equality Forum takes place later in the summer than normally scheduled in order to coincide with the Democratic National Convention, which arrived in Philadelphia on Monday. As such, the events during Equality Forum take place during the day this year and the panels are tailored to largely political issues in order to help set the tone for the movement at a time when the Democratic Party will choose its candidate for the upcoming election.

“This year obviously the focus is on the U.S. as opposed to in prior years other countries. Because it is during the Convention and because it will be the major focus for LGBT content programming during the convention, the events are, unlike in the past where most of them would have been held in the evening, they’re being held late morning through late afternoon so as to not interfere with the principle business of the convention, which is in the evening,” Lazin says.

There will be eight events over the four days featuring prominent members and leaders of the LGBT community. The first panel is called the National Legal Panel and features a variety of people who have made significant legal contributions to advancing the rights of those in the LGBT community, including the cases that helped lead to marriage equality in 2015 in Obergefell v. Hodges as well as preceding cases.

On Tuesday, Barbara Gittings’ residence at 21st and Locust will be dedicated as a historic marker. Gittings , who lived in Philadelphia during the 1960s, is often considered to be the mother of the LGBT civil rights movement. While she lived in the city, she edited the first national monthly lesbian magazine and helped make changes in the American Library Association and American Psychiat-

ric Association, encouraging positive literature about the LGBT community and working to have homosexuality removed from the APA’s list of mental illnesses. Tuesday will also include a National Politics Panel which features a variety of guests who have helped take steps to secure LGBT rights in the country’s legislature.

On Wednesday, the Arch Street Meeting House gets its own historical marker.

In February 1979, activists from around the world met at the house to plan the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The march has gone down as a pivotal event in the movement for equality. The Elected Officials Panel also takes place on Wednesday and features openly gay politicians at varying levels of government.

On Thursday, two awards will be given.

One is the National Role Model Award, which is given to an activist and ally to the LGBT community for their contributions. This year, Obergefell will give the award to Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives. The Frank Kameny Award will also be awarded to Ed Rendell, who is serving as a chair at the Democratic National Convention. Kameny spent his life working for civil rights and achieved many things, including an overturning of a ban keeping LGBT workers from federal employment.

The last panel is the Future of the Movement Panel, which examines what the LGBT community’s needs look like now that marriage equality has been achieved and what role the political process will play in achieving them. “It’s to set the agenda for the LGBT community moving forward. If you look at the list, it’s not Equality Forum making that judgement on behalf of the LGBT community. It’s not that presumptuous,” Lazin says.

“It’s pulling together leaders and organizations who represent the LGBT community.”

Lazin says that each person participating in a panel or event during Equality Forum’s summit are “superstars” in their field.

Beyond hosting Equality Forum every year, the organization of the same name also organizes a number of other LGBT programs throughout the year. Equality Forum has, for the last decade, organized LGBT History Month, which honors 31 icons of the movement each year. The organization has also helped produce multiple documentaries and other initiatives designed to have an impact on the LGBT community.

As Equality Forum begins, Lazin says that though marriage equality has been achieved, there are still more goals to work toward, including bullying, discrimination and transgender rights.

“The civil rights movement’s ultimate goal is a place at the table and those issues are certainly going to be among the front and center issues,” Lazin says. n July 25-28. Various locations. equalityforum.com.

Marlon Wayans Brings the Funny to Philly

A

ctor and comedian Marlon Wayans returns to TV next season with a new show in which he plays a loving— but inappropriate—father committed to coparenting his two kids with his ex-wife. The funnyman is currently traveling city to city on his “Scandal-less” comedy tour. I caught up with the Wayans ahead of his appearance at Punch Line Philly to talk parodies, politics and Philly beards.

Do you get to come out to Philly often?

I’ve been there a lot the last few years. I was never really in Philly before, then the last two or three years I’ve been in Philly maybe six times. A lot of history.

Do you have any favorite places you like to hit up when you’re there?

When I’m there, I work. But I will say this: Del Frisco’s? Yeaaaaaah, man. I love that place. And I love all the beards. I just want to snatch one off people’s face and wear it ‘cause I can’t grow a Philly beard. If I jacked anybody in the world, it would be for a Philly beard. It’s like they’ve been growing them since they, like, infants. My beard is so ugly.

It looks like someone pushed me in a fire.

My beard grows in like Lebron’s hair.

The Democratic National Convention is in town this week. Are you supporting any candidate?

I’m born and raised in the projects of N.Y.C. and, you know, I just think for me, even though I make Republican money, I want my Democrat people to do well. I don’t mind paying my taxes so people have better lives.

It’s not about my personal wealth, it’s about the wealth of America. I’m not saying I’m a socialist, I’m just saying I think in our world, the rich should help supply better lives and schooling, things like that for the people that aren’t doing so well. Growing up in the projects of N.Y.C., I would love to use my money for better schooling. If I had to re-raise me, I would. I’m probably gonna go Democrat.

Who’s going to be the voice of those people who can’t speak so loudly? That’s what’s important to me, there’s a lot going on, in terms of destruction all around the country, and I think that legislation’s gotta be fixed. I watched the whole speech last night at the RNC and not one word about the things that’s happening, people being killed by law enforcement. And I love our law enforcement, I got a lot of cops as friends, but there’s good cops and there’s bad cops and I think the bad ones need to be filtered out and there should be some penaltites for taking an innocent person’s life so they can take it more seriously.

It’s not their fault, it’s our legislation and we need to pay close attention to that. But I watched the whole [RNC] convention last

night and not one mention of that. Not one.

And that bothers me. There’s two sides to the coin and I’m not saying ‘Hey, cops killed innocent people, go kill cops!’ No, I’m not saying that at all. Don’t do that. That’s bad period. Don’t take people’s lives, it’s all about a peaceful walk, coming together, and restructuring our legislation.

Do you feel like providing a comedic relief is an outlet to release some of the anger?

Absolutely. I’m gonna talk all these issues here and be very responsible and respectful, but when I get on stage, I’m gonna make people laugh. This country’s too messed up, this world’s too messed up not to find the humor in it.

You’re returning to TV in January with a new show called Marlon. Is it more personal than other roles you’ve played?

Absolutely personal. It’s based loosely on my life as a dad. We did this thing with People magazine and the guy interviewing us asked my kids, “Give me one word to describe your father.” They both looked at each other and I thought they were gonna be like, “loving, affectionate.” These little idiots looked at each other and said “inappropriate.”

I did parody for 25-30 years and it was beautiful, wonderful and I learned how to tell jokes and how to really pack a script with fun characters and look at the world and make fun of things and but now I’m taking a crack at original characters and original stories that people can follow and care for and give somethin’ with a little bit of heart, a little bit more substance. n

oe McKay, known among the hardcore community as Joe Hardcore, has been booking hardcore shows in Philadelphia for 20 years. Today, he organizes the United States’ premier hardcore music festival, This Is Hardcore.

Now in its 10th year (and 11th occurrence), This Is Hardcore has grown from a small one day event to a four day extravaganza at the Union Transfer and Electric Factory, hosting legendary hardcore acts like Judge and Bane, final sets for bands like Agitator and Rock Bottom, international acts like Hellweed, who are travelling from Moscow, and even reunion sets like Youth of Today and Turning Point, paying tribute to late vocalist Skip Candelori.

The festival came from humble beginnings. After the demise of other festivals like Posi Numbers Fest that took place in Wilkes-Barre and Hellfest in Trenton, McKay and his team decided to try throwing a festival in Philadelphia.

“What happens is that you do enough shows and you play enough shows and you see a fest and you kind of go, ‘I could do that. I could do that better than they can,’” McKay says.

There had been indicators in the year leading up to This Is Hardcore’s first incarnation that Philadelphia could host such a festival. Legendary hardcore acts like Madball, 108 and Lifetime played venues like the Trocadero Theatre and people came out to the shows.

McKay says each year the festival has grown and he learns a little more about doing it. There are already bands booked for next year’s fest due to logistical or booking issues that kept them from this year’s festival, though they won’t be announced until next year.

“I’m good at organizing and pushing it and it’s fun to do. You get a look of excitement on everyone’s face when there’s a sea of kids out there,” McKay says.

This Is Hardcore is a labor of love. There is not much money to be made at this stage for a hardcore festival but McKay continues to work on it anyway. McKay pours concrete for a living and works on shows, both the festival and individual shows throughout the year, because he loves it.

“It’s not a money thing, it’s a ‘who the fuck else is gonna do this if we don’t?’” McKay says.

After a decade of putting together the festival, it’s still a learning experience for McKay, who says he’s made plenty of mistakes and will continue to learn how to do it better with each fest.

A decade of This Is Hardcore has also allowed for huge or unlikely bands to take the stage. Last year, punk legends The Misfits appeared to play their album Earth

A.D. in full. This year, Youth of Today will perform a reunion set alongside bands like Integrity, Floorpunch and Gorilla Biscuits.

“I come up with what we did, what we still haven’t done, what we’ve been told ‘no’ about. For every band you’re seeing, there’s five no’s,” McKay says, laughing.

“There’s always that list in my head of things I want to try and at this point I’ve become the guy that people go to for that,” he adds.

Reunion sets are a big thing at This Is Hardcore as they are at many major festivals (Coachella this year featured reunions for Guns N’ Roses, N.W.A. and LCD Soundsystem), with bands oftentimes coming to McKay first now.

“I don’t seek out the reunions but they are a part of why people do festivals,” he says.

Dozens of bands have played This Is Hardcore over time, setting high standards for memorable performances. The most memorable for McKay is Bane, who played the festival multiple times before their final tour in June and their last This Is Hardcore in 2015. The band’s high energy sets have even included a “pizza party” with the crowd in 2013.

“Benchmark: Bane level. I’ll kinda be like, ‘Well, I don’t know if it was Bane-level crazy,’” McKay says.

Though there will be no more Bane sets, the lineup is still hand picked by the organizers of the fest. McKay says that despite knowing he sounds “corny” saying it, he is excited to see every band playing This Is Hardcore this year.

The biggest excitement for McKay this year is Youth of Today because he missed the surprise set the band played in 1994 with multiple original members. He was a kid who didn’t have a ride at the time. He has booked various other incarnations of the band but this is the first time he has seen or worked with the hardcore band’s classic lineup.

Running a festival like This Is Hardcore takes dedication to make happen every year, whether it happens at the Starlight Ballroom (where the first festival happened, now District N9NE) or the Union TransferElectric Factory combo that it is today.

And it damn sure beats concrete pouring. “I got to be involved in hardcore, I got to book hardcore bands, I got to tour,” McKay says. “Nothing is as cool in this entire world as standing on the stage and looking at everyone happy and being excited because you took the time from everything else you were doing in your life to put it together.” n

Running Wylde C

Acclaimed guitarist Zakk Wylde heads to the TLA. onducting a 15-minute interview with acclaimed guitarist and songwriter Zakk Wylde is like trying to cram an ocean into a Dixie Cup. With a career spanning nearly three decades and armed with his signature bulls-eye guitar, the man has become a legend in the metal world. He served as Ozzy Osbourne’s lead guitarist for five of the icon’s studio albums from 1988 through 2007. As the frontman for Black Label Society, he’s been destroying eardrums since 1998, releasing nine LPs with the band. Wylde, who was born and raised in New Jersey, has also established himself as an entrepreneur. He started guitar/gear company Wylde Audio and opened his own recording studio, The Black Vatican. He has a line of hot sauces through Blair’s Sauces and Snacks, and even has his own blend of coffee through Death Wish Coffee Company, aptly called Valhalla Java Odinforce. Through it all, Wylde has been a devoted family man to his wife and four children.

We caught up with Wylde the morning before his show in Norfolk, Virginia, supporting his second solo album, Book of Shadows II, which was released in April, 20 years after its predecessor, 1996’s Book of Shadows.

When asked about the time gap between his solo works, he says he was looking to smash the record that Guns N’ Roses established with Chinese Democracy (2008), which notoriously took about 15 years to finish.

“The way I look at it, regardless of whether people think this album is the best thing since sliced bread or they think it makes a wonderful beer coaster, the whole thing is me and you can high five at the end of the day going, ‘We did it,’” Wylde laughs. “I mean, you have to have a reason to get out of bed in the morning.”

While he was touring with Black Label Society in support of the band’s 2014 record Catacombs of the Black Vatican, Wylde recalls how often friends and fans would ask him when he was planning on doing another Book

of Shadows album, which diverges from the face-melting brutality of Black Label in favor of a Southern acoustic style. His answer was always the same.

“It would always be in between cleaning the dog run, world peace, changing diapers…” Wylde says. “I’ll get around to that before brunch, you know what I mean?”

Black Label Society has a fair share of lighter tunes in their catalogue, notably the piano-driven “In This River,” which was dedicated to Wylde’s close friend and guitarist for Pantera and Damageplan, Dimebag Darrell Abbott, who was murdered while performing in 2004. Wylde says a desire to tour playing exclusively mellow songs, taking a break from “the pounding of the heavy stuff,” coincided with the 20 year anniversary of the first Book of Shadows. It was a perfect storm that allowed Wylde to write Book of Shadows II. Throughout the record, Wylde uses his bluesy vocal range to convey an emotional depth that you might not expect behind his pleasantly gruff, quick-to-laugh demeanor. There’s a sense of searching, of being spiritually lost. The album is a pensive one—the type you listen to on a long, introspective drive.

Along with its heavy lyrical themes, Book of Shadows II boasts plenty of impossible guitar work for virtuosoenthusiasts to salivate over. (It’s fucking Zakk Wylde, after all.)

Wylde recalls how he found inspiration for the first Book of Shadows while working with Ozzy and co. on Ozzmosis (1995) in New York City.

“What we would do is, we would track during the day and me and you would go out drinking all night and find every Irish pub we could in New York City until about six in the morning,” Wylde says.

One of these bars in particular, which had been standing since the 1800s, had a jukebox featuring some of Wylde’s favorite artists, like Neil Young, Van Morrison,

The Eagles, The Band, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

“We’d just be cranking that all night, and then me and you would basically crawl over to the hotel, which was right next to the bar,” Wylde says. “I had my acoustic with me and I’d just end up writing tunes.”

Those songs became Book of Shadows. While Wylde was inspired by the same style of music for the sequel, this time he did it minus the booze. Wylde swore off the stuff after alcohol-related health problems mounted in 2009.

He asserts that during his drinking days he was “never blasted when we were tracking.” He says inebriation was more like a creative launching pad for him. “When you’re drinking or whatever, your inhibitions are down,“ Wylde says. “It puts your brain in a different headspace.

You can’t deny that.”

It’s a lifestyle Wylde neither regrets nor condones—it’s simply part of what made him who he is. He compares it to imagining Jimi Hendrix without the psychedelics, Arnold Schwarzenegger without the steroids, or Guns N’ Roses without… everything.

“Listen to Appetite for Destruction and go, ‘Man, imagine how great they would have been if they didn’t drink and do heroin and smoke weed, or be with strippers and prostitutes and shit like that,’” Wylde says. “And it’s not an endorsement to do this shit, but there would have been no Guns N’ Roses. It’s like, ‘What, are you fucking kidding me?’ That was part of the whole experience of what made them (who they were).”

After the Book of Shadows II Tour, Wylde expects to hit the studio with Black Label Society in December. n

An Unlikely Ex-Pat Feminist/lesbian author recounts her time in the Middle East.

F

rom the headlines we often read, being not only a feminist, but a lesbian feminist in a Muslim country in the Middle East is not advisable. But for Chivvis Moore, an American who for 17 years lived throughout Egypt, Syria and Israel, the experience was anything but repressive. Now Moore, author of First Tie Your Camel, Then Trust in God, is on a mission to educate Americans on her experience. She hopes to counterbalance the xenophobic rhetoric against Muslims that she feels is only escalated due to incidents of violence and the Trump campaign. I chatted with Moore about her unique experiences abroad and about how she would like to see Muslim/U.S. relations evolve.

ferent from life in the U.S. as to be almost impossible to compare. Schools can be closed, communities sealed off from one another so that it is impossible to visit relatives, access health care, or carry on a business. Children can be killed playing soccer in an open field or playground.

Men, women and children are killed and imprisoned indefinitely, without charge, government officials locked up, political activists tortured. Walking into the center of Ramallah one day I found the man who served pudding from a little cart had been shot dead—a mistake, apparently—by an Israeli soldier. Homes can be raided and people arrested and no reasons given. I could go on. The list is endless, the differences too great to describe, the trauma unimaginable.

What first made you decide to move to the Middle East?

We just concluded the RNC and Trump focused his acceptance speech heavily the dangers of refugees and spread of terrorism from Muslims. What are your thoughts on this rhetoric?

I first went to the Middle East in 1978 because I read a book by an Egyptian architect, Hassan Fathy, which described building houses of mud brick, in traditional Islamic style, for people with little money. I was working as a carpenter and building contractor at the time, and the book, Architecture for the Poor, inspired me to go to Egypt to volunteer with the project. This is how my life began in an Arab country; and the generosity, humor, and intelligence and wisdom that I learned to appreciate there made me want to return to the region, particularly as I learned more about the U.S. role there.

I returned to the Arab world in 1992, during the First Gulf War—first to Syria, then to Egypt again, and finally, for 11 years in Palestine.

Arab, mostly Muslim civilian Palestinian population in contravention of international law. How could Arabs and Muslims feel otherwise than antagonistic and suspicious? To help our image, we must stop arming and supporting dictators, kings and other repressive regimes throughout the region, initiate a policy of fairness toward Palestinians, and stop making war on Arab and other Muslim countries. When Americans stop thinking of themselves as superior to Arabs and Muslims, meaningful relationships can begin.

Why do you think the United States is viewed with dislike and suspicion by people in the Middle East? What can we do to help our image?

How were you treated as a lesbian feminist? Did people know you were not heterosexual? Did you have fears about being a lesbian there?

The United States is viewed with dislike and suspicion by people in the Middle East because of the wars we wage there and because the U.S. supports—in fact, makes possible—Israel’s military occupation of the Palestinian people. As a lesbian who lived for 16 years in three different Arab countries with Muslim majorities, I never encountered any prejudice directed at me. But the whole issue of sex is far more private than it is in the West; it’s hard to figure out who is gay. Even a heterosexual Muslim couple will not hold hands, much less kiss, in public; and certainly I was never asked about my sexuality. My identity as a lesbian is only one part of who I am, and I felt strongly that I was in the Arab Muslim world to learn, not to showcase a foreign culture. Also, while I was never afraid, I did worry that those who cared about me would be put off and reject me

socially if they knew I was a lesbian. And it was clear that any intimate relationship I might initiate with an Arab woman would put that woman at risk of approbation in her own society. Therefore, when attractions arose, as they did from time to time, I let them go. I told close friends, those who had lived for a time in the U.S. and who I guessed would be accepting. It did seem to me that my colleagues went out of their way, through comments they made, to let me know they had no problem with my sexuality.

In Syria, I was told that a foreign teacher had been expelled from the country for being gay. In the West Bank, I heard that a foreigner was fired from Birzeit University for the same reason. But although many Muslim countries have laws on their books punishing gays (and heterosexuals for sexual activity outside marriage), I never heard of those laws being implemented. A certain town in the West Bank is referred to quite openly as a town with many gay men. And in 2007, Palestinian lesbians inside Israel held their first public conference, and lesbians from the West Bank attended, with no retaliation.

You mentioned living under military occupation, how different is such a life compared to what we Americans are accustomed to?

What’s one of the biggest misconceptions the average American has about the Arab world and what would you like them to know instead?

Thinking Arabs are primitive, barbaric, fanatical beings of lesser worth and humanity than Americans. I would like them to understand that Arabs are human beings who want the same things for themselves and their children as Americans do, who have the same capacities for love and intelligence and humor, who deserve to live in peace and dignity—and free from foreign invasions and military occupation.

Convention Spurs Sex Work?

T

his year’s Republican platform managed to be even more homophobic than usual, as part of their larger 2016 strategy to win over your least favorite aunt and uncle. It’s not just the GOP’s whole-hearted endorsement of anti-LGBT discrimination and their support for traumatic and unscientific ‘conversion therapy.’ It’s also the ‘words mean whatever we want them to mean’ definition of “traditional marriage” and identifying homosexuality as “an ideology alien to America’s history and traditions.”

Based on their Presidential candidate, “traditional marriage” is apparently between a man and as many wives as he can afford to support. To be fair, that’s actually how it is in the Bible too.

During the RNC convention last week, Cleveland female sex workers and strippers reported disappointingly slow business. This was in contrast to predictions and despite boosted promotional efforts.

Ironically though, it turned out to be a boon for gay male sex workers, some of whom reportedly were able to reap six times their usual incomes, according to Reuters.

A flurry of Craigslist ads specifically targeted closeted male convention attendees and the demand was even higher than anticipated. It could be argued the Republican platform is more a reaction formation than a concrete plan.

Many in Philly are wondering how this week’s Democratic convention will affect local sex workers. The prevailing wisdom is that political conventions, like sports championships, are a magnet for tourists seeking sexual services. But is there truth to this belief?

Every Super Bowl and Olympics, there are a slew of alarmist reports about increased sex trafficking in the host city. It bears noting that sex work is not the same thing as sex trafficking, though they are often conflated. And the reality is that there’s no data backing up any of these assertions of amplified activity levels.

George Washington University Sociologist Ron Weitzer studies sex trafficking and reportedly told the Wall Street Journal, “This is largely the result of certain activists who pull their numbers out of thin air.” Though police may seek and arrest more people on suspicion of selling sex during these types of events, that doesn’t prove a greater supply or demand, only increased policing. Other researchers point out that sex workers with established client bases elsewhere wouldn’t earn enough to justify the travel

and lodging expenses associated with seeking a convention payday in Philly.

It’s impossible to know how the DNC’s visit will play out, but I asked a few local sex workers about their expectations.

Nearly all of them anticipated some kind of boost in business, and many echoed the sentiment that male sex workers will be garnering the biggest benefits. When asked why, one anonymous male sex worker said, “Travel definitely gives them the anonymity they’d need.” He continued, “Discretion is the name of the game, of course.”

Miranda, a local woman who offers “full service” and is also a professional domme, told me that the greatest indicator she’s seen of increased demand was the lack of hotel availability. “I tried booking hotel rooms five months ago and nothing was available.” That is, unless she wants to drop $1,400 for a night, which seriously undercuts her profit margin. “If it’s not busy, I can do lots of other things.”

She added that her time this week will be largely spent doing activism with Project SAFE to promote sex worker rights.

Project SAFE is an all-volunteer organization that does year-round outreach to women in street-based economies and advocates for human rights for people in sex and drug trades. This week they’ll be doing tablings and providing extra support to those arrested, including: food, water, and rides home from jail. They’re hoping to collaborate with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Miranda expressed that she was very curious to see how this week plays out, both in terms of business and for increased risk for the already vulnerable.

Sex workers who operate around the El have been on high alert for the last several months because of an unusually high amount of violence in the area.

“There’s a man who has strangled and slit the throats of women in the Kensington neighborhood who has not been caught,” she explained dourly, “There’s usually a lot of violence. But now there’s more than usual. This is just to be expected. It comes in waves.”

She is cautiously optimistic that the convention will lead to profit, adding that some of her best clients are men who work in DC, but her underlying point is that this is an opportunity to shine a light on an ongoing problem in an underrepresented population. “We all have to make decisions about what we disclose to partners or potential partners and when we disclose it,” said Alice Dreger, historian of medicine and science, sex researcher, and author.

Dreger, for readers who may not be familiar with her, is the founding board chair of the Intersex Society of North America and the author of Galileo’s Middle Finger: Heretics, Activists, and One Scholar’s Search for Justice. Intersex, for readers who may not be familiar with the word, is an umbrella term covering dozens of different inborn conditions.

“They all involve someone having something other than the standard male or standard female body as those are defined by doctors,” explained Dreger. “There are lots of different ways to be intersex, including some so subtle that you might never even know you had that particular variation of development.”

So that chill hetero boy you’re thinking about disclosing your intersex-ness to, INTER? He could be intersex himself and not know it. But you do know it, and does “knowing it” obligate you to disclose?

“Lying is a bad idea, of course, but she’s not lying by presenting herself as a woman and identifying as a woman,” said Dreger.

“She is a woman, just one whose body came with some parts that aren’t common to most women, or maybe lacking some parts that are common to most women (depending on her particular intersex condition).”

Dreger suggests making a mental list of the things a long-term partner might want, need, or a have a right to know about your history and your body. Then using your best judgment, INTER, decide what to share with him and when to share it.

“For example,” said Dreger, “if this chill hetero guy talks about wanting kids someday, and the letter writer is infertile, she might want to mention sooner rather than later that she was born with a condition that left her infertile. Do her genitals look or work differently than he might be expecting? If so, she might think about when it would be best to give him some guidance about how her body is a little different and what works best for her.”

legitimate right to certain information, INTER, with our right to medical privacy as well as our physical and emotional safety.

“There’s no reason for her to feel like she has to announce, ‘I’m an intersex woman.’ She could opt to say, at some point, ‘I was born with congenital adrenal hyperplasia,’ or ‘I was born with androgen insensitivity syndrome,’ or whatever her specific condition might be, and then answer his questions,” said Dreger. “If the label ‘intersex’ were part of her core identity—a critical part of who she feels she is—then she might want to tell him early on, just as someone might talk about her ethnicity if that’s really important to her.

But otherwise, she can disclose just like non-intersex people do with regard to fertility, sexual health, sexual sensation, sexual preferences, and sexual function—at a pace and in a way that promotes a good relationship and makes you feel honest and understood.
