Equality Forum E quality Forum has long stood as a nonprofit voice for LGBT civil rights, advocating for education through documentary films, high-impact initiatives and their annual LGBT civil rights summit, the oldest in the United States, which will take place this year from July 25-28 in Philadelphia.

This year, the summit will coincide with the Democratic National Convention and will address the LGBT community’s needs looking toward the future, as well as reflecting on past and present achievements, says Malcolm Lazin, founder and executive director of Equality Forum.

“What is it that the movement, at a moment in time where marriage equality has been achieved, what are the goals of the movement and how does the political process support and impact that?”

Lazin says.

During the summit, the organization will dedicate two new historical markers to important figures in the LGBT civil rights movement. The first will be dedicated to prominent activist Barbara Gittings, editor of the first nationally published lesbian magazine among other achievements with the American Library

Association and American Psychiatric Association, at her 1960s residence at 21st and Locust Streets. The second marker will be dedicated at the Philadelphia Conference Historic Marker at the Arch Street Meeting House. It was there that 300 activists from around the United States met to organize the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in 1979. The march was pivotal for the LGBT civil rights movement, helping to give it a national audience.

Equality Forum will also host a number of panels featuring many prominent activists for the LGBT community discussing relevant issues. There will be a legal panel featuring James Esseks, who served as counsel in Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court case that won marriage equality nationwide. There will also be panels on politics, elected officials and the future of the movement, all issues that intentionally intersect with the Democratic National Convention’s presence in the city. —VINCE BELLINO

Philadelphia’s Hemp Heals Foundation, which supports sustainable agriculture and health, and clean and natural medicine, hosts a music festival headlined by 311, and featuring performances by Matisyahu and Suburban Sensi. Philadelphia’s member-supported radio station, 88.5 WXPN, hosts its annual XPoNential Music Festival at Wiggins Park on the Camden Waterfront. Father John Misty, The Districts, Ben Arnold, and up-and-coming bands such as Queen of Jeans, Chicano Batman, and Eliza Hardy Jones, will be performing throughout the weekend. With three stages and more than 30 artists, there will never be a dull (or quiet) moment. Three-day festival passes give attendees lawn-access tickets to the BB&T Pavilion for performances by acts including Ryan Adams and the Shining, Alabama Shakes, and Brandi Carlisle. Trainer-ly Advice PokemonPHL Founder dishes on the spots to visit.

E

ver since July 6, we’ve been seeing a lot more of the tops of people’s heads. We all know the reason, and yes it starts with a P. Pokémon Go is the app that everyone seems addicted to and the reason for spending even more time staring at your phone screen. In just two weeks, the game has exploded into the fabric of pop culture, between the news coverage of Poké-mishaps and random hunt chatter on the street And of course Philly isn’t at all immune.

“My first suggestion would be go down to FDR Park,” says Patrick ‘iTZKooPA’ Mulhern, co-founder of the MMO blog Lore Hound and its off-shoot PokemonPHL. “Mostly because there’s water and grass, that’s two different types of Pokemon. I haven’t had it happen to me, but I’ve been told Gyarados and Seaking are down there.

Which are two very hard to get Pokemon and they’d both be relatively high level.”

Mulhem says that with so much attention being directed at Niantic’s location-based augmented reality mobile game, it was only natural for Lore Hound to branch off into creating a site solely for PG’ers. “I saw a great tweet about ‘Michelle Obama has been trying to get people outside for eight years, Nintendo did it in 24 hours.’”

Mulhern has no shortage of advice for fellow trainers. In fact, he can’t stop raving about FDR Park’s Poké-friendly specs.

“There’s so much area there, you could probably catch a lot of Pokémon without too much effort. You’d have to move around, but without putting out lures all over the place. There’s also a few Poké stops, plus you’re in a park.”

“The Center City area, like most metropolitan areas, are full of Zubats, I have pages and pages of Zubats, I keep deleting them. I’m in South Philly and find that more on the outskirts of the city will be like, Doduos, and then some Pidgys and Spearows.” He adds that it will come as no surprise if a company like the Philly-based Exavia, which creates map tools, builds a routing tool to link Pokémon hot spots together. Mulhern’s advice is that parks will provide the best access to more Pokémon, which could help your social life if you happen to look up from that smartphone. “Usually it’s places where people end up just getting together because of the game. You can kind of talk and socialize. What’s interesting to me is the companies that are really getting into it. Like I saw Chew in Center City draw a Mewtwo, Milkboy actually has a stop, so they at least know that it’s there,

as the source of it all. It all comes together for making what for many are real world socializing that might not have happened lest we stayed stuck on our phones playing a less reality integrated game, take that anti-social Candy Crushers. “I’ve talked to adults and children,” explains Mulhern, “(that’s kind of a weird thing, I know, it’s like, ‘hey kid, just go back to your parents’) but you get to these points and you’re like ‘Ugh I got another Zubat’ and someone will say ‘I just caught a Venusaur down the street.’ And then it’s like, ‘can you show me where? Tell me where!’ It’s that camaraderie, that sharing of information. You may have never met these people, but here you are having these conversations about really nothing that matters, but you’re still bonding and growing this community at a time when we need to.” n

It appears the Poké-socializing is set to increase this summer, with bar crawls and other group meetups set around the game being planned. Although one crawl had to be cancelled because its attendee numbers were predicted to be so large it required a permit, here’s a few that are all ready to Pokemon go (sorry, couldn’t resist)

Safari in Tacony Creek Park they’re aware.” Of course some businesses haven’t been super thrilled by the fact that they happen to be a Pokémon Gym or other attention-drawing location, especially if it’s getting in the way of their business. “I was playing around midnight or one in the morning and I was sitting in a gym in South Philly, but I was actually sitting on some business’s stoop that had been, of course, closed for hours.

I had this cop like slow roll by me and I just showed him the phone and he just like gave me the nod and he kept rolling like ‘he’s not doing anything, he’s playing that stupid game,’” recalls Mulhern.

Speaking of gyms, Mulhern’s favorite spot? East Passyunk of course. “It’s a hotbed. We are probably going to set up a bar crawl there, but really anytime, just up East Passyunk, that area with all the restaurants, is just a torrent of Poké stops, there’s two right next to each other. And there’s a couple of gyms too, and I think it extends past Pat’s and Geno’s. And you can stop for cocktails, it’s a good place to walk.”

We asked Mulhern how he feels about the criticism of the game, particularly whether it’s just another way we’re letting our lives dissolve into a glowing screen in our hand. He counters that in several ways, because of this app’s unique features, it’s actually encouraging more activity and social adventuring. “I think it’s how you deal with that. I’ve met dozens of people I would never have seen or met, like spoken with them, not just crossed them and knew they were playing. And you don’t need to sit there and look at the screen.” Because staying in one place often isn’t conducive to catching Pokémon you might not actually know where you’ll end up. “I didn’t know the statue down in Marconi Plaza, down by Oregon and Broad, that was the first statue of Columbus in the country, according to the description. I’ve gone to places and found out things, because all of the Poké stops have little notes.” If you’re wondering where all those bits of geographic trivia come from, you can thank Google Maps

Donkeys Around Town F or two weeks now, Philadelphia has been overtaken by a mass migration of donkeys. Fifty-seven fiberglass donkeys to be precise, one for each delegation coming to the city. Of course this isn’t some weird effect of global warming, but a way The Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee for the Democratic National Convention has chosen to celebrate the DNC here in Philly. “Philadelphians will finally be able to enjoy our ‘Donkeys Around Town,’ which we are excited to install today in publicly accessible locations throughout the city,” said former Pennsylvania Governor and Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee Chair Ed Rendell. “This program has been a great partnership between the Host Committee, the Mural Arts Program and each of the Democratic delegations coming to town, and I can’t wait to see all of our donkeys on display for Philadelphians, delegates and visitors to enjoy.”

The Host Committee is also offering a “Donkeys Around Town” scavenger hunt, found on the free app Scavify, where users can complete challenges at each of the donkeys they find across the city to earn points.

Participants will be asked to answer questions, check in via GPS, or take fun photos (#DonkeysAroundTown) at each donkey location to accumulate points and win prizes. The scavenger hunt will take place only during the convention and prizes include museum tickets, free cheesesteaks and season tickets to Philly sports teams.

Outside of trying to snag some free items, the donkeys also are canvases for local artists to interpret the diverse images from the 50 states and then some. We asked a few of the artists to tell us more about themselves, and their painted burros.

location: South Philadelphia Art you create beyond painting donkeys: lllustration—I used to freelance for PW back in the day! Several covers, and I illustrated Steven Wells On The Radar weekly column for more than three years. Currently working on a new mural for the Spring Arts project, and a monthly illustrated food column for Saveur.

How long have you been an artist? Most of my life; professionally for 15 years, full time for seven.

Which donkey did you work on? New Jersey and New Hampshire.

Describe the elements of the donkey? New Jersey gave me great stuff to work with, perfect for my style.

Atlantic City, Frank Sinatra, The “Trenton Makes” bridge, The N.J. State Seal, Tick Tock diner. I designed a sort of steel-pier/carnival midway-themed motif to decorate the legs and head. New Hampshire was more conservative but perfect for the state and made for a good “nature meets patriotism” sort of theme. Elements included the Pemigewasset covered bridge, New Hampshire State House, Old Man In The Mountain, and the NH Democratic party logo. I decorated the legs and head with a simple patriotic motif.

Where’s your donkey located?

New Jersey: Duross and Langel, 13th and Sansom, inside the store but you can see it from the street. I do highly recommend going in to see the other side with

Tic Toc Diner and Sinatra. New Hampshire: Inside the Independence Visitor’s Center in Olde City.

Anything memorable about the painting process?

It was really different to work in a semi-abandoned giant warehouse in the Tioga Marine Terminal; but also really fun, especially with such a great group of artists. I feel like everyone sort of encouraged each other and traded techniques for getting paint and detail down on such an oddly shaped object as a giant fiberglass donkey.

What research did you do beforehand? The delegates provided us with reference photos for the required elements. I also found some nice photos of Atlantic City and the Steel Pier at night, from various time periods for general inspiration on the N.J. donkey. I was actually in New Hampshire two weeks before painting these, so I had the sort of general vibe and aesthetic of New Hampshire in my mind while working on it.

Did you donkey give you any trouble? I kept most of the detail on the flatter areas. It also helped to jack the Donkeys up on buckets of paint or boxes to paint the undercarriage and legs without having to lie on

the concrete floor for 14 hours. More difficult than the curves was the bumpy, hair texture molded on the donkeys. The surface was not flat, and made detailed areas and lettering especially difficult, usually requiring 2-3 rounds of painting, fixing, letting it dry, and fixing it again.

What’s your advice for visitors coming to philly for the Dnc? Go look at all the donkeys! And check out Philly’s amazing art/music/food offerings while you are here.

Outside of painting a donkey, what’s something else odd and unexpected that you have worked on? I’ve done a couple projects like this, more recently Next Stop Democracy’s Voting Sign project, which was also a blast to work on. My sign is actually on display inside City Hall until the end of July as part of AIGA’s Get Out The Vote exhibit. Also, many many years ago I painted an honor box for the Philadelphia Independent (a short lived, but incredible arts-focused monthly newspaper) as part of a similar project where local artists painted the boxes all over the city.

styles. Later, that design was changed to represent the middle of their state with long leaf pines, but now I’m inspired to make a BBQ trip to North Carolina.

Did you donkey give you any trouble? It was difficult! The donkeys are really detailed, and have fur texture all over them. I’m used to pencil and paper, so it was challenging for me to paint on that surface.

What’s your advice for visitors coming to Philly for the DNC? If it’s hot out, check out Spruce Street Harbor Park. It’s a really cool “urban beach,” and I swear it’s 10 degrees cooler there than the rest of the city. Get yourself Franklin Fountain’s blueberry ice cream while you’re relaxing there.

Outside of painting a donkey, what’s something else odd and unexpected that you have worked on? I work in the children’s section of Sellers’ Library in Upper Darby. I end up with all sorts of unusual projects, whether it’s making an igloo out of empty milk gallons, or making a giant 3-D Hulk for a summer superhero display.

Location: Upper Darby Art you create beyond painting donkeys: I make prints and notecards from my watercolor and pencil illustrations. My art can be found at sarahdrawsthings. com How long have you been an artist? I’ve always drawn, but I’ve only worked professionally for four years.

What state donkey did you work on? I worked on Alaska and North Carolina Describe the elements of the donkey? I received six suggestions for elements to depict on the donkey from the North Carolina delegation. I used almost all of them. I represented the pine forests by painting a longleaf pine branch, pine cones, a fox squirrel, and a woodpecker. There are also mountains and a lighthouse to represent both eastern and western North Carolina.

The front of the donkey has the state bird, the cardinal, and the state flower, the dogwood. I did add an element of my own to the back of the donkey. I made sure to include a rainbow because I know that North Carolina Democrats are fighting HB2.

The Alaska delegation wanted aurora borealis, Mt. Denali, Forget Me Nots (the state flower), salmon, their state flag, and, of course, a moose. The moose was my favorite part! I usually paint animals and natural elements, so this was perfect for me.

Where’s your donkey located? The North Carolina donkey is right in front of Jim’s Steaks on South Street.

I’ve seen lots of donkey selfies pop up on Instagram with that one. The Alaska donkey is enjoying a stay at the very posh Sofitel Hotel near Rittenhouse.

Anything memorable about the painting process?

I usually work on my own, so it was a completely unique experience to work in a big warehouse with lots of other very talented Philadelphia artists. I met so many wonderful people.

What research did you do beforehand? I looked up tons of reference photos for both donkeys before I started. North Carolina originally wanted BBQ on their donkey, so I learned a lot about their different BBQ

I have been an artist living and working in Philadelphia for four years, going on my fifth year.

What state donkey did you work on? Washington and North Dakota Describe the elements of the donkey? Washington: lavender fields, salmon, apples, Mt. Rainer. North Dakota: body of horse was painted like the Nokota horse (wild horse of North Dakota), red war paint on horse of

face to pay homage to Native Americans who settled this land before us, flower wreath around neck of donkey because North Dakota is the peace garden state, and wheat for the wheat fields of North Dakota.

Where’s your donkey located? My Washington donkey is located at City Tavern (138 S. 2nd Street) and my North Dakota donkey is located at the Wyndham Hotel (400 Arch Street).

Anything memorable or of note about the painting process? I really appreciated the communal aspects of this experience regarding working in the Tioga Marine Terminal Warehouse with other artists and the connections and collaboration that happened in that unique space.

What research did you do beforehand? I have never been to either of these states, however through this experience I now plan on visiting Washington and North Dakota. I researched these states by doing simple Google and YouTube searches for content and images.

Did your donkey give you any trouble? Yes, it was challenging to paint something that was 3D and had texture. I tried projection and struggled because things did not line up exactly, however I was up for the challenge and did not let this hold me back. I used creative problem solving skills to work with the challenges. To handle the texture I painted the donkey a solid coat so that the paint would fill up the texture and then I used paint pens to get the fine detail that was necessary for the piece.

What’s your advice for visitors coming to Philly for the DNC? My advice for visitors coming to Philly for the DNC would be: invest in your city and support our fractured communities and our environment. I will be attending Power Shift northeast the weekend before the DNC with the goal of energizing youth to advocate for sustainable environmental policy that hopefully our future president will push forward. Together we are strong. Art can be used to make a difference in our world. Every small act helps, from picking up one plastic water bottle on the street to calling your senator regarding green policy.

reparations for the Democratic National Convention are in full swing. From July 25-28, the City of Brotherly Love will turn into a political hub when Delegates from the Democratic Party meet to officially nominate their pick for president. Apart from the actual convention itself, plenty of DNC-themed events will be happening around the city. Here’s a list of some of the events planned for the week.

Political Moviefest (July 20-23) Just before the DNC comes to the city, get into the political spirit with four nights of outdoor films about presidents and politics. T

he Democratic National Convention is, after a year and a half of planning, finally coming to Philadelphia. The last time such a large-scale political event was held here was the 2000 Republican National Convention, which, this year, is in Cleveland. Although the RNC has been off to an interesting start (with entire delegations walking off the floor, accusations of plagiarism, and Stephen Colbert filming a Hunger Games parody), the lead-up to the Philly DNC has been relatively calm.

Sure, there’s already talk of a 51-foot joint being marched from City Hall to the Wells Fargo Center in an attempt to raise awareness for marijuana legalization, and there are countless drink specials that will allow us to get smashed patriotically, but in spite of all the fun times that are sure to be had here in the City of Brotherly Love, the fact that a major historical event is about to take place in our city cannot be ignored.

I’m proud to say that I am one of the thousands of volunteers that will be assisting the operations of the DNC. As a journalist, I’ll (naturally) be taking part in the social media side of things, working on Twitter, Facebook, blog posts, and more, all while fangirling about the fact that Hillary Clinton is only a few miles away from me.

Before the excitement starts, though, all volunteers have to go through training.

Luckily, the only thing I had to do was to partake in a webinar. The hour-long session boiled down to, “This is some Philly history, this is what the DNC is, and here are a few fun facts.” For example, did you know that apparently, Philadelphians speak an entire different language than the rest of the country? Neither did I, until a slide came up on the presentation explaining “Philly slang.” I still don’t know whether or not they were entirely serious, but a week and a half later, I’m still laughing at the fact that someone took the time to come up with a formal definition for “jawn.”

The DNC doesn’t officially start until July 25, but the city is (and will be) in a frenzy of preparation until everything goes off (hopefully) without a hitch. I mean, if we can host Pope Francis without incident, we should be able to handle Hillary and Bernie, right?

Get involved if you can—even if it’s helping carry that joint down Broad Street— and even if you’re not a fan of Hillary, or if you’re not feelin’ the Bern, at least try to be respectful of the fact that our city is, once again, making history.

John Gorka Returns

“I

’m from New Jersey, I don’t expect too much” are lines N.J.-native and folk veteran John Gorka has sung many times over the years as he passes through town each summer to play an outdoor show. This year’s no different (although “I’m from New Jersey” can’t be promised). Gorka returns to the Bryn Mawr Twilight Concerts this weekend. He also has a new, or shall we say, semi-new album out, Before Beginning: The UnReleased I Know—Nashville, 1985, which we found out more about recently when we caught up with the singer-songwriter.

How does your new release differ from your other recordings?

Before Beginning was recorded in three days. Also, I don’t usually wait 30 years between the recording and the release date!

This was my first attempt at making a record. I recorded it three different times before it came out as I Know in 1987. I’m putting it out now because I thought it would be interesting for people to hear. The players, the arrangements and the instrumentation are different. Also, there is some really nice playing on there, especially Stuart Duncan’s mandolin and fiddle.

You’ve been touring for years. Has it gotten easier, is it still very solitary?

One of the things that has changed since having kids is that I don’t stay out for weeks at a time. I go out for two, three or four shows then I come home. Otherwise I would become dispensable at home.

People learn to get along without you and I don’t want that to happen. I enjoy playing my songs for people, the old songs and the new. I generally do not have a set list so it is not the same show every night.

Sometimes the audience has a better idea of what song to do next so I try to be flexible. I don’t mind traveling alone. It gives me time to listen to music, podcasts and even the left hand side of the radio.

You seem to be a staple on the summer concert scene in Philly. What’s changed for you over the years?

I’m glad that there are venues and concert series that have me back. I’ve noticed that the audience gets better looking each year as do I [he says jokingly]. I’m starting to see second generation listeners— people who come up and tell me that my music was playing in their homes when they were growing up.

Do you have a typical Philly routine when you come to town?

I don’t really have a routine but I am happy to note the proximity of Wawa and their

How has your songwriting evolved over the years?

My perspective has changed. I’m no longer a young man. I tend to favor shorter songs trying to convey an emotion or tell a story as economically and concisely as possible.

Are you currently feeling more political in your creative process with everything going on in the country?

I have written songs that have political or social themes or content from time to time and this year is no different. We are in troubling times for sure and I can’t help but be affected. I don’t know how that will express itself in the new songs or the choice of the older songs when doing shows. That seems to change from moment to moment. I do have a new song that I hope will have a short shelf life. It’s called “4 Letter Word 5 Letters Long.”

I read that you aren’t naturally extroverted. What made you want to get on stage in front of people initially then?

I was always drawn to performing but not all that comfortable doing it. Over the years it’s like I’ve come to terms with my own discomfort. I am naturally socially awkward, but now I just don’t try to hide it anymore. I think I knew I wanted to be a writer before I knew it would be writing songs. I write songs and perform in order to connect with people in the way that normal social interaction does not permit. With songs I can combine the emotions or ideas I can articulate in the lyrics with what I can’t find words for but can express in the music. It is a more perfect form of expression. Phillip Scarpone discuses “University City Station: Glassboro,” his latest exhibit on view at Grizzly Grizzly.

W

hat’s that funky looking cross between the TARDIS and a bomb shelter box that’s taking up residency inside Callowhill art studio Grizzly Grizzly? It’s actually an interactive work by Delaware native Phillip Scarpone, a sculptor and mixed media artist who, with University City Station: Glassboro, has created a sensory structure based on a mash-up of architectural memories. We chatted with Scarpone to find out more about his thoughts on memory and what the heck UCity and Glassboro have in common.

So why did you choose these two spots, UCity and Glassboro, to play a part in this work?

The two locations I referenced in the piece were very unrelated at first. In 2013, I was living in Athens, Ga. and made a trip home to the Mid Atlantic region for the summer. I set out to photograph architectural elements unique to the area to bring back to my studio as reference images.

The Glassboro image was taken of a bunker type pod in a scrap yard in Glassboro, N.J. and the University City Station image is of a dilapidated steam room along the regional rail line at that stop. The images sat around my studio for some time and eventually became two structures that I continually looked at together and overlapped in my head. I was reading two books ‘Architecture of Fear’ by Nan Allen and ‘Some Place Like Home’ by Toby Israel. Nan Allen’s book speaks to architecture and spatial design in how it is influenced by society’s preoccupation with fear. Toby Israel’s book speaks about design psychology with the basis being that our sense of self and sense of the environment are very closely intertwined from seeds planted at childhood. The two spaces I photographed, University City Station and Glassboro, in some ways overlapped in my mind with the larger themes of those two books. The buildings’ dilapidated/weathered qualities became even more appealing to me looking at the images in a different region of the country (almost tying in to my sense of self or the region I grew up in) and the brutalist aesthetic of the buildings drew parallels to ideas of uneasiness or oppressive architecture.

How did these two memory locations come together?

They started to tie together in my mind as an abstraction or accumulation of fragments. The interior of the piece is somewhat referential to the interior of the Glassboro pod in that it was an extremely claustrophobic “thing.” To complete the interior, I also used loose memories of working in fan rooms, boiler rooms, tight corridors, attics, basements and

industrial refrigeration units. The exterior more closely relates to the image of University City Station, which is a solid concrete block structure. The Glassboro pod also seemed to potentially be a refrigeration unit at one point, hence the air conditioner.

What, in terms of sensory experiences, can the visitor expect to experience?

Viewers can expect to experience temperature shifts in various parts of the gallery, white noise and shifts in lighting and color.

Is this your first installation like this?

I have built a number of installations in the past, but this is one of the few that becomes a full body, sensory experience once inside the structure

What’s your history with Grizzly Grizzly? Have you worked with them before?

I have not worked with the gallery before.

I shared my work with them last year and they offered me the exhibition opportunity.

Do memories get mashed up with other memories?

This is a great question because photography has been a mechanism I’ve used for a long time.

I certainly think that technology is creating a new kind of recollection. My cell phone bank of images is almost absurd since I use the camera on a daily basis as a tool to capture places, people

or things that strike my interest for potential future works. Sometimes I feel like I’m swiping through a black hole looking for an image I slightly remember taking.

There is a sort of preciousness that is lost from being able to capture so many images on a device in my pocket, as opposed to dealing with printing film. For instance, going to a family member’s house who pulls out a book or pile of family photographs. When you start sifting through the photos stories are told and memories are relived/preserved. The strong connection to the images might be because they are tangible, unique and prone to decay.

In an attempt to regain a precious quality in my cell phone or digital camera reference images, I add layers of information to create ambiguity. I do this by, diffusing, overlapping, drawing on top of them and re-photographing them through light tables. In my mind it brings them to a state of being slightly ambiguous, unique and personal so that they have a history and stronger story attached to them.

As far as memories becoming mashed up with other memories: the idea of fragmentation and building with fragments of recollection to create a new whole is something I explore quite a bit. I am interested in how recalling a moment, space or experience, diluting it and filtering it through a mental sieve, can create new poetry in what we find important. n

Guns N’ f’n Roses still Rocks N’ f’n Rolls

G

uns N’ Roses at The Linc this past Thursday was a lot like the band’s catalog itself: Best when focussed on the early badass boogie-woogie, increasingly less so as it delves into ballads and epics.

Dubbed the “Not in This Lifetime Tour,” this is the first time singer Axl Rose, guitarist Slash and bass player Duff McKagan have played together since the early ’90s. The ensuing years of turmoil, drama and tabloid gossip have made this arguably the most anticipated rock reunion since Springsteen and the E Street Band reconvened after more than a decade for a new studio album in 2002.

That was, of course, the same year Guns N’ Roses sparked a riot at the First Union Center when the band, featuring only Axl from the original lineup, cancelled a show two hours after they were supposed to go on.

That sense of anticipation made this week’s opening one-two punch of “It’s So Easy” and “Mr. Brownstone”—album cuts rather than hit singles—so effective. Not only did they jump right back in, but they nailed the landing.

The band, now flanked by second guitarist, Richard Fortus, Chinese Democracy era drummer, Frank Ferrer, Dizzy Reed on piano, Chris Pitman on keyboard, plus Melissa Reese playing synth and providing backup vocals, finally got the really big cheers and surge of energy when they slid into “Welcome to the

Jungle” a few songs later. It may have taken a few songs for the disbelief to fade and people to finally realize the band was actually there.

Then, they broke the crowd wide open with a headfirst plunge into “Live and Let Die.” The epic ended with a strong, sustained Axl Rose Scream (™) that sent the frontman running offstage for a good portion of “Rocket Queen” right after it.

The band settled in—and ran into a few problems. The nearly three-hour set time was welcome after so many years, but it also revealed the weaknesses bundled on the two Use Your Illusion albums. The Linc show initially succeeded with the riffs and swagger from Appetite for Destruction, but got

bogged down with all those five- and sixminute songs that resemble Queen more than Aerosmith.

Plainly put: when “Civil War” doesn’t send chills up an American audience’s spine in 2016, something’s wrong.

The low point, easily, was “This I Love” from the Axl-only album Chinese Democracy. Here, the singer sounded more like Cartman than Bruce Dickinson, and the band seemed as bored with the power ballad as the audience.

But the lull made it even better when they returned to Appetite material. “Out to Get Me” woke the crowd back up, and “Night Train” as a pre-encore closer was almost

more explosive than the fireworks-laden “Paradise City” grand finale.

The Slash solos were great, old-school blues shredding, if you’re still into that sort of thing—and even if you’re not, this could have been enough to reawaken that fetish.

But, it increasingly became apparent that they, along with McKagan singing a song, were there to cover Axl’s frequent disappearances from the stage.

And, there were gaffes. The band lost the downbeat at least twice, and fumbled a few passages. They took “November Rain” a hair too fast, robbing it of its impact, and the jumbotron caught Slash looking up from his guitar to guide the band away from an impending trainwreck.

But they came off as actual, genuine moments on the kind of stage where everything is usually rehearsed to death. There’s nothing like thinking a song could go off the rails at any second to remind you it’s all real and happening in the moment. Ask any old head: That’s rock and roll.

And in 2016, you can choose to be a rock and roller to the end, getting fucked up in the parking lot during the openers and declaring the show a success just because it happened. Or, you can be too cool for butt rock and decide it’s a fiasco before the lights even go down. The truth, as usual, is somewhere in the middle.

But if you were alive and breathing by 1992, these songs hold at least some manner of cultural relevance. Seeing it all on a stage this big, with a crowd this expansive, and with some actual rock and roll fuck-ups, was pretty goddamn cool. n

he plan had been to talk to this guy about his former career in porn; but we never got to that.

Instead we debated whether differences in how much sex men and women want are rules of biology or a result of culture.

I pointed out that lots of women are hesitant to express desire because of slut shaming. There is still a real double standard about how much sex we should want and have. He argued that the only women who want truly uncommitted hookups are either damaged by sexual assault (comparing them to wild horses that had been broken) or seeking validation due to poor body image. The conversation, unsurprisingly, didn’t get too far.

Aside from being offensive, there were a lot of issues with his argument. A big one is that he’s operating from an evolutionary psychology framework that is ultimately unfalsifiable; but that’s outside the scope of this piece. Another matter is that he indirectly suggested body image concerns don’t affect the majority of people… and their sexuality.

Survey data finds more than 90 percent of girls and women express some desire to change their appearance, most often as a wish to lose weight. Males are not immune from these pressures, conveying anxiety about being too fat, not having enough muscularity, penis size and hair loss.

Very little of the angst is based in a practical health concern. People are responding to years of messaging

that says only certain bodies are desirable or worthy of love. Body image isn’t just superficiality. These fears alert our core psychological and social needs.

This cycle starts early. Girls’ self-esteem, on average, peaks at age 9. By 10, 80 percent of girls have dieted.

With puberty comes increased vigilance toward their shape from everyone around them. Some moms become fixated on keeping kids from getting fat, some dads suddenly shy away from being physically affectionate, and peers can bully about literally anything.

These shaming experiences can stick with us going forward and shape our ideas about bodies and sexualities.

For many people, this gets easier with the passage of time and the acquisition of coping strategies—or at least we just stop giving so many shits about what everyone thinks. Sometimes people find an exercise or therapy solution that leads to feeling more confident. But there are as many stories as there are people.

I gathered a handful.

Though she grew up athletic and conventionally attractive, eight years ago LdW had emergency surgery to remove cysts. This resulted in the loss of an ovary, a C-section scar, 45 pounds of weight gain and a doctor’s order to abstain from sex for two months. “I have not felt sexy to this day,” she explains, “and have been intentionally celibate for eight years.” While the kink scene affords some outlet for her sexual energy, her mother’s death to ovarian cancer further entrenched

the negative association with sexual parts. She says, “I cannot seem to see my ‘female anatomy’ as anything but pain and death.”

On another hand, Leela learned that, for her, feeling sexy had nothing to do with fitting a conventional template. With her short stature, medium-to-heavy build, body hair, dark skin and androgynous presentation, she says, “it’s easy for me to decide that I’m not attractive.” But despite her expectations, many partners have been into her. The upside of not fitting a conventional mold is that it frees her from expectations, so she can choose when to turn on the charm and be perceived as a sexual being. “I’m very willing to turn it up when I feel safe.”

For Dalyla, whose journey has included identifying her feminine gender identity, positive self-regard came from dance. “For a while, I couldn’t handle the fact I was tall, wide, and strong. But now when I look at my curves and lace up my sneaks, that’s when I see the ‘bad bitch” everyone else sees. My body stands for something.”

I’ve heard hundreds of stories of finding and losing body love, as well as tapping into and falling out of patterns of sexual connection. There is a real correlation between self-love and the ability to share with others, but it’s nowhere near as simplistic as the former porn star dude suggested. There’s no single solution to the lifelong tasks of being OK with yourself, just as there is no one single standard for appearance or acceptable way to experience sexuality. n

’m sorry if my English is wrong. I’m writing from Germany, where I am being heartbroken and not knowing how to go on.

I’ve been seeing a guy for a couple of months and slowly falling in love with him. “Peter” has always been very open to me about himself, his failed relationships, and his commitment issues. He talks frequently about his ex-boyfriend from five years ago and how being left created a deep fear of being left once again.

He also had a relationship that ended a year ago. Yesterday he told me he’s still in love with the guy from one year ago but that his love is unrequited. He also told me that he values what we have but he can’t stop loving this other guy. I am in love and heartbroken at the same time, hopeful and fearful, and unable to get up for the last couple of days. Deep down, I fear I will get hurt. I already am hurt. I’m falling for someone who’s not able to love me back, who’s stuck in the past, but who wishes to change that in order to let me into his life.

Should I stay and wait for Peter to get better even if it hurts to know he’s in love with someone other than me? —Healing Erotic Love Problem Means Everything Peter could be lying to you.

That’s probably not what you wanted or expected to hear, HELPME, and you’ll find some more hopeful/less cynical advice further down, I promise. But when a guy with “commitment issues” tells you he’s struggling with the emotional fallout of a relationship that ended five years ago and is still hopelessly in love with someone he hasn’t seen for a year… you have to entertain the possibility that he could be lying to you.

You always have to entertain that possibility—with new loves, old loves, blue loves.

When someone tells us they have “commitment issues,” we’re primed to hear this: “This boy is incapable of committing until healed (by a therapist, by a new love, by the passage of time).” But sometimes what they mean is this: “I have no interest in committing—not to you, not to anyone, not now, not ever.” But instead of owning up to that or telling you he’s not seeking anything serious, Peter invents/inflates a pair of past loves that render him incapable of loving you the way you deserve to be loved and blah blah blah and off the hook. Not a child-man who won’t commit, but a victim who would commit if he could commit but—sob!—he can’t commit.

But, hey, maybe he’s telling you the truth.

Maybe he’s in love with Mr. One Year Ago. So tell him he can love you and love the other guy at the same time. Established gay throuples, stable straight poly quads, bi men with GFs and BFs, married lesbians who U-Hauled an adorable baby dyke— there are examples everywhere you look these days of people in love with more than one romantic partner. I don’t see why a person can’t be in love with someone and still in

love with an ex—think of it as a sort of semiposthumous/semi-poly relationship. You’ll be pioneers.

Give Peter permission to love his ex (pathetically and abstractly) while loving you too (intimately and tactilely), and you might be able to love a commitment out of him.

I’m a gay guy in an open relationship and I’m on Recon, a gay hookup/dating site for guys into leather/fetish/BDSM. My partner, who isn’t kinky, knows I have a profile there and it’s not a problem. Today I got a message from a new guy, and when we exchanged face pics, I saw that he looks exactly like “Peter,” my boyfriend’s best friend’s fiancé!
