Opening Day at The Oval

T

hanks to a partnership between Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and the Fairmount Park Conservancy, the Oval returns to the Parkway this year, bringing family-friendly fun to the city with a summer oasis full of excitement. The “Park on the Parkway” has something for everyone, including movie nights, live music, games, yoga, bicycle lessons, and more. This Friday’s opening-day festivities begin at 5pm, so head down to the party and see what the Oval has to offer.

Start your night with a trip to the Oval Beer Garden and enjoy cold brews in a space decorated with illuminated recycled furnishings that provide an experience unlike anything you’ve seen before. Sample unusual craft and foreign beers including Leinenkugel’s Grapefruit Shandy and 21 Amendment Hell or High. In addition to the beer garden, there will be a rotating lineup of food trucks throughout the summer. Opening day will see Chef Johnny Bravo’s Surf & Turf, The Tot Cart, Mucho Bueno, and more. Stock up on movie munchies before settling in for a screening of 2012’s “Pitch Perfect” at 9pm.

While opening day is bound to be great, it will only offer a glimpse of the amazing things to come throughout the summer. The Oval is open Wednesday-Sunday, and each day has a theme around which events will be planned: Food & Flicks Fridays offer screenings of Finding Nemo and Ghostbusters, while Sundays will be all about family-friendly fun and feature DJ Patty Pat. Wellness Wednesdays will feature yoga, kickboxing classes, and Indego-sponsored learn-to-ride bicycle classes.

With all of this excitement going on, it seems as though there will never be a dull moment at The Oval. Get a head start on the fun, grab some friends, and head down to the opening night festivities. Polyamory is having something of a moment in mainstream media, but the representations are often limited to young, conventionally cute, white, cisgender people in closed triads (three-person relationships).

Kevin, who has been practicing ethical non-monogamy for 14 years, created Poly Role Models as an opportunity to diversify the imagery. “It’s so easy to not see yourself reflected in a space and to assume that space is just not for you. Polyamory passes itself off as very inclusive, so it’s my blog’s job to press the issue.” The blog’s success has translated into a series of nationwide speaking engagements talking about the intersection of race and polyamory. As there are relatively limited resources for healthy relationships that support non-monogamy, most practitioners learn by doing. Poly Role Models gives a platform for folks to share their stories—including mistakes. Kevin aims to create a space to not only change how the community is viewed, but also how it views itself.

Fun Facts: Is both a jock and a geek, running several distance races each year and logging hundreds of hours playing video games; has tattoos dedicated to his fandoms.

Project director for Next Stop, Democracy!

While Philly is a city filled with young registered voters, a depressing few of them turn out at elections. Through a grant from the Knight Cities Challenge, Next Stop Democracy aims to boost civic engagement and remove obstacles to voting. “Philadelphia has a lot of populations on the move, folks who are very underrepresented in decision making. That’s messed up.” A successful project included creating bilingual signage for polling places, using artwork crafted by prisoners in a voter education workshop. Collaborating with the Mural Arts Restorative Justice Program, the organization taught guild skills like carpentry, mosaic tiling and landscaping to former inmates. Among the folks who completed the training, the recidivism rate is less than 10 percent, which is dramatically lower than the rest of the state.

Fun Facts: Starting a Girl Scout troupe out of Indy Hall; won an essay contest in elementary school and got to meet Christine Todd Whitman; best job previously was teaching a class on spying techniques to 7th graders, using the name Agent Hallenoates.

Aside from organizing the Philly-area Take Back the Night (an annual march against sexual violence), Amanda works with the Sex Workers Outreach Project, Project SAFE, and Up Against the Law, all ventures to support the most vulnerable populations in the city. According to Amanda, the battle for social justice includes not only access to education, healthcare, housing and food, but also unpacking the trauma of living in an oppressive society. Between their job and activism, Amanda spends 60 to 70 hours a week working to take down capitalism, white supremacy and rape culture. “There’s not a huge separation between work, organizing and personal time. I love everything I do so much. But I also take time for self-care.”

Eric thinks there’s room for everyone in the world to be comfortable. His day job is cultivating a definably queer space where being LGBT or an ally is the norm, and his art is creating intersectional comedy that showcases the viewpoints that aren’t always represented.

“Most people feel othered in some way and that’s unacceptable to me.” His “funny and hope-filled” recent play, Time is On Our Side, was written to show the world as he lives and sees it. The show’s huge success was a reflection of how many types of people could connect with the material.

Fun Facts: Huge cupcake aficionado with very strong opinions on every shop in the city. “Obsessed with Beyoncé, obviously. She sweated on me one time. It was wonderful.”

The duo became friends in the breakroom of a former job, bonding over a shared love of comic books. Five years later, they are 30-something episodes in on their podcast that discusses philosophy, current events, science, and faith using the framework of geek culture. Comparing themselves to the characters Power Man and Iron Fist, the pair acknowledge they come from very different perspectives. “Power Man, like Octavius, is a married Black man of imposing size and devout faith. I am none of those things,” says Adam. “We put love first,” adds Octavius, “We have decided to come from love, respect, curiosity. Where are you coming from? I’m open to that.”

Turning to his co-host he says, “You don’t have to be accepting, but you are. It’s important for others to see that.”

Fun Facts: Adam’s favorite comic book character of all time is Man-Thing: “I will talk about it to anyone who will listen. Please let me.” Octavius has been doing martial arts since he was a kid, loves his wife Alexis, and is the creator of the Philly-based lifestyle brand, B3arFruit.

Age: 55 Julie thinks Philly is the best city in the world for trans people.

The work of her group, Trans-Help, as well as the Mazzoni Center, GALAEI, Attic Youth, William Way and other organizations, has cultivated an unprecedented level of inclusivity. “That’s not to say we don’t have a million years to go.” TransHelp is a legal nonprofit dedicated to serving trans people’s needs. Their lawsuits against the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania include one to remove a ban on Medicaid funds being used to treat gender dysphoria and one to change the policy that required gender confirming surgery to update a birth certificate. “I had a lot of bad karma early and I’m trying to make up for it now. All of the skills in my life have led up to this work. God said to me, ‘This is what you’re gonna do.’ It’s challenging, but I believe in it.”

Fun Facts: Has many pets, including two rescue labs named Aragorn and Legolas, a one-eyed cat named Tuna, and a cat name Sophia which “we never see.” Went to chess club for the first time in years and won—after playing a 6-year-old boy.

Vanessa’s work in cryptocurrency uses cutting-edge technology to level the playing field and empower the most vulnerable populations. “This is definitely a women’s issue.” In South Africa, the Praekelt Foundation is using Stellar to create savings accounts that enable young girls to exchange cell phone minutes for the local currency. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, coffee bean farmers are able to insert their wares into a machine that pays out in 5 seconds, eradicating the need for a middleman.

That’s super inspiring.” Through the organization Unleashing North Philly, Malcolm organizes events to address the neighborhood’s issues—collecting and distributing over 1,300 packages of diapers. This election season, he was selected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, representing 83,000 votes, the second highest of anyone in the state.

He now co-teaches sex education and HIV prevention, talks to social justice groups about retaining youth leadership and is active with the nonprofit Juntos. He was a part of protests against the Berks County detention center where undocumented folks are detained, families are separated and people are living in substandard conditions. “We’re trying to allow these folks the same rights we enjoy.” Activism has given Manny purpose, made him more comfortable with public speaking and taught him resilience. Going forward, he wants to get other young folks involved, especially those who are LGBT or come from non-traditional homes. “I want to show them the light at the end of the tunnel and do for them what was done toward me.”

Angels & Outlaws Chad Michael Murray discusses his latest role as an on-the-run criminal.

C

had Michael Murray might be remembered for his roles in One Tree Hill, Freaky Friday or A Cinderella Story, but in his new movie, Angels and Outlaws he plays a hardened criminal and bank robber. PW talked with Murray about the new film, playing an outlaw, and a the upcoming One Tree Hill reunion.

Angels and Outlaws opens in theaters this week. Can you tell us a little bit about what the film is about and the character you’re playing?

It follows Henry, he’s an outlaw. Him and his hooligans are on the run from the U.S. Marshals after robbing a bank and killing a few people. They seek shelter at a home while they’re on the run and what transpires in the home you’ll find is far worse than anything you could’ve imagined.

Henry’s a dark outlaw, somebody who’s long in the teeth for that era.

Do you see any similarities between yourself and Henry?

Whenever you get the opportunity to do something that jumps off the page to you in a way where you kind of get some crazy ideas about a character is something I always run to. I always like playing something that’s a departure. It’s fun for me, so I’ve been doing a lot more of that as of late, and this is really, definitely a piece of that. I think that everyone’s been surprised at how very different it is [from previous characters]. It was about a month of really intensive prep.

Do you do anything to prepare for acting as a bank robber who’s been a criminal for decades?

For me, it was pushing myself to the limits physically. Tiring myself out. It

was July and it was about 100 degrees outside. I was running 10 miles out in the heat to feel that wear and tear on my body. For one, to really lean out, and two, to really put myself through like riding horseback in the old west and walking through unbearable heat with no sleep, no rest, no food for hours. It was a little bit of that, and I’ve always been an avid camper myself.

Do you have anything you hope people will take away from the film?

What sticks out for a film like this for me, you can see that it’s a labor of love and you can see that it’s a tale that we haven’t seen. It’s a story that hasn’t been told. In it’s originality, I really hope people respond to that. It’s dark, it’s gritty.

There was confirmation that there will be a One Tree Hill reunion at EyeCon this year. Have you been in touch with the other cast members since the show ended?

I’ve been to a few reunions over the years and it’s just great to see everybody.

I think every single person is so grateful to have the experience to grow up in a very original and very different way, and do something with people that really mattered. It’s crazy when you go to these things and you’ll see young 11, 12, 13-year-old kids who have just found the show on Netflix over the last few years and are watching it for the first time. It really struck a chord.

Anything else going on?

Nah, man, just loving my life, living the dream. I hope you dig the film, I hope everyone does. Some people are gonna like it, some people are gonna hate it, it’s one of those types of films that does that. n phillyweekly.com | July 14 - 20, 2016 | Philly Weekly | 15

Punch Line Philly Arrives T

here are a lot of comedians in Philly and a lot of comedy lovers, and with the opening of Punch Line Philly in Fishtown, there’s a lot more space for them both. Punch Line Philly, which opened last week officially with a week of fan fare, Dave Chappelle and parties, becomes the first comedy venue in the Live Nation family on the East Coast (there’s currently two other California spots). The former Ajax Metal Company has already been the site for the successful conversion to the Fillmore concert venue, also a Live Nation property. And now the company has a comedy club to add to the roster.

Its sister act, Punch Line (with the soon-to-be-opened nonLive Nation Revolutions Bowling Alley sandwiched in between) is a 300-seat club featuring an expansive bar/lobby area designed, like the Fillmore, to get guests arriving earlier and lingering after a show. The comedy lounge includes semi-private table seating in the back, another half-bar, and tables and chairs surrounding an intimate, yet open, stage area. A full dining and drinks menu is offered. Like the Fillmore, you’ll notice a lot of modern/retro touches of wood and metal. “It’s a departure for us, in our look. It’s modern but industrial,” explains Geof Wills, Live Nation’s head of comedy. “It’s that style of taking the old and making it new again.”

So far, Wills likes the reviews Punch Line is receiving. “It got tested out by Dave Chappelle and it met his approval. For us that’s a big deal because he’s one of the greats.”

Wills feels that the timing and location seemed right to bring the Punch Line model to Philadelphia. “With the Fillmore already being there, there was the space there that could accommodate a comedy club. Philly’s a great comedy town. And if you look at how Philly is being served, there is a comedy club already in the city, Helium. It’s in town and we feel like the population is enough in Philly that there’s room for two or more clubs to be able to thrive and serve the common community. This is an underserved market.”

The idea that comedy is growing, or at least comedy venues need to grow to meet the demand of the city, isn’t lost on comedians. “The comedy scene in Philadelphia is definitely gaining momentum,” says local sketch comedy duo The Incredible Shrinking Matt & Jacquie. “With Punchline and Good Good Comedy opening and joining the ranks of Helium and Philly Improv Theater, not to mention multiple independently-run sketch, improv, and stand-up showcases—there are more comedy shows in the city than ever before. The benefit of having multiple venues for comedy that are so different from one another is that the performances can be increasingly more niche and tailored to specific audiences.”

Performing sketch comedy, Matthew Schmid and Jacquie Baker find that oftentimes they don’t fit in with traditional stand up venues. “Sketch comedy (similar to Saturday Night Live and Mad TV) is pre-written and performed like a play—so, it’s not ideal for every stage. When we first started writing and performing in 2012, Philly Improv Theater (PHIT) was the only theater with a stage that could accommodate sketch acts. Fortunately, the Philly sketch landscape in 2016 is very different. In addition to PHIT hosting monthly sketch shows, both Good Good Comedy and Philly Sketchfest host sketch shows,” they say.

Asked if they will leave for the bigger comedy scenes of LA or NYC, the pair says that although such thoughts are unavoidable, they’re resisting that urge. “It’s much, much harder to get noticed here. However, we’re living in the Internet age. It’s no longer totally necessary to transplant yourself, because there’s a chance that something you create will transcend a local audience online. easier to be starving artists in a city where the rent is cheap. We can afford to work part-time and devote the rest of our time to doing what we love—creating and performing comedy.”

“Philly’s comedy scene has been steadily rebuilding itself over the last five or six years, after what seems like a mass exodus of talented comics to New York roughly a decade ago,” says Aaron Nevins, founder, along with Kate Banford, of Good Good Comedy. “Philly’s comedy scene today is now made up of hundreds of super talented people who produce and perform tons of different types of comedy. It’s also a really healthy mix of comedy nerds and loudmouths who found a good forum for their loudmouthery.”

Nevins dismisses the stereotype Philly has received for being an uncaring crowd. “Too often, whenever Philadelphia and comedy are brought up in an article, it’s referring to that incident where Bill Burr took on a rowdy crowd in New Jersey in 2006. As a result, Philly’s gotten this weird reputation for having rough audiences. But of course you’re not going to have the greatest audience when you’re in a big arena in Camden full of people who are mad you’re not Joe Rogan.”

Having produced nearly a thousand shows in Philly, the pair say they can attest to a much different experience. “The audiences are almost unanimously cool, comedy-savvy or just generally game for whatever.”

And speaking of venue openings, Nevins and Banford report that Good Good Comedy Theatre will be opening by the end of summer in Center City after a successful Kickstarter that saw the group raising over double the $12,000 goal. They promise all shows to cost between $5-$10. “We’ll have regular classes on comedy writing, producing your own comedy show, improv, and a wide range of other subjects,” adds Banford.

“A nurturing and supportive environment helps to create great comedy. The more venues the better for local comics,” says Wills about Punch Line and the Philly scene in general. At a time when most Americans could probably use to laugh more, it feels like perfect timing. n

or the last two decades, rates of autism have been on the rise, with a Center for Disease Control study identifying 1 in 68 children as having Autism Spectrum Disorder. Awareness has steadily grown about autism and its “high-functioning” subcategory Asperger’s syndrome, chiefly characterized by idiosyncratic difficulties in understanding social norms. Alternative comedy, a subset of stand up and sketch comedy similarly identifiable by strange deliveries, joke structures, and incomprehension of the logic of social norms has also gained popularity. Could there by a correlation?

For actors Noah Britton, Jack Hanke, Ethan Finland, and New Michael Ingemi, the members of Boston sketch group Asperger's Are Us, there is. They met at a theater camp for autistic kids, and began writing sketches together based on a shared love of Kids in the Hall. They claim to be the first sketch group composed “entirely of openly autistic people,” something their name and web presence makes clear, although it’s possible I wouldn’t have realized this from the act alone. I first saw them perform three years ago at the Silent Barn, a Brooklyn venue known for its DIY indie rock shows. They enthusiastically blazed through what seemed like dozens of sketches in about an hour. Some had ironic premises reminiscent of Mr. Show, like parents who put their adult son up for foster care.

Others employed disarming physical comedy and visual puns, like their final sketch where Noah Britton raps a goodbye to the crowd while Jack Hanke wrestles with a stack of cardboard behind him. Noah’s rap concludes, “And give a hand for Jack, whose beatboxing is great!” Another was just uniquely bizarre. A woman tells her partner she’s pregnant. He responds that he has something to reveal as well. “I’m a wad of bubble wrap.”

“So our child will be a rapper?” The wife asks. “...Or a bubble.” He answers.

Weird as the performances were, they were in line with the type of sketch I like from Kids in the Hall or Whitest Kids U’Know—oddball characters, goofy premises, and clever wordplay.

As a neurotypical person who is generally ignorant of autism, I didn't know

what to make of the Asperger’s aspect of the act. As a discriminating fan of alternative comedy, I ate it up.

“I’d say we’re not a part of the alternative comedy genre any more than Airplane! or Police Squad,” Noah Britton says in an email interview with the group. “In the early 80’s, they wouldn’t have been considered alternative comedy, like Steve Martin probably was. They were just nerdy and unique. I’m hoping we can be seen that way.”

On an online forum for people with Asperger’s, wrongplanet.net, one thread speculates that Jon Stewart, Larry David, Robin Williams, Steven Wright, and Mitch Hedburg all have signs of Asperger's or at least utilize “aspie humor.” A couple users were certain that Andy Kaufman had Asperger's. “Andy Kaufman made up a language for his character Latka Gravas [Taxi], and became enraged when people spoke this language incorrectly—for example, the actress who portrayed Latka's bride,” a poster named rivertrotter argued.

The concept of “aspie humor” was actually discovered in the 1940’s by pediatrician Hans Asperger himself. In his paper, “Autistic Psychopathy in Childhood,” he argued that while autistic people “do not understand jokes….” (especially when the joke is “on them”). This can lead neurotypicals to wonder whether the subjects are humorless or just repulsed by verbal cruelty. Far from humorless argues Asperger that, due to their literal-mindedness, “when making puns… autistic people sometimes shine… this can range from simple wordplay and sound associations to precisely formulated, truly witty remarks.”

“The main thing uniting most Aspies’ sense of humor is our wordplay,” the group says, “Because we’re not that interested in silent plays.” Perhaps in the jovial atmosphere of 1940’s Austria this sort of humor may have been considered hack, but in an era when irony and paraprosdokians (look it up!) are all the rage, autistic humor may at last have its chance “to shine.”

Another key to understanding the humor, the group argues, is to laugh with someone, not at them. Characters like Sugar Motta in Glee and Sheldon from Big Bang Theory are two notorious examples of characters who are mocked for their autistic traits. Abed Nadir from Community and Christian Bale’s depiction of hedge fund manager Michael Burry in The Big Short received more positive responses from autistic viewers.

For their trailblazing openness Asperger’s Are Us has earned a large international autistic following, some of whom often write in to their Facebook page for advice on their own careers. But their humor is not made specifically for those on spectrum. “Our comedy is written to appeal to the four of us in the troupe. If it makes us all laugh, it goes into the show.”

A string of recent successes indicates they won't be laughing alone. Since their early Brooklyn performance they have been covered in USA Today and The New York Times, and gained the attention of filmmaker Alex Lehman, who flew to Boston to make a documentary about the group. An early version of the film impressed famed “mumblecore” director and star of The League, Mark Duplass, who signed-on as producer. Variety called the film’s SXSW premiere “among the buzziest of the festival,” leading to a deal with Netflix, who will stream it this Fall.

Following the success in Austin, the group hired an agent and will go on their first major tour this summer—playing comedy clubs, not punk venues, with some high-profile openers. Joe Pera, whose slow-paced anti-humor recently killed on Late Night with Seth Meyers, will open their July 11 show at Caroline’s in New York. In Los Angeles, they expect to perform with Mark Proksch, who before his recent notoriety from Breaking Bad and On Cinema, confused morning news audiences nationwide as “K-Strass to Yo-Yo Guy.” While they’re excited about the larger audiences and professionals running their light and sound, they’re also worried about dealing with drunk crowds.

But hecklers are not their least favorite audience members. The group recalls a particularly annoying comment at their SXSW Q&A: “A woman raised her hand and said, ‘I’m a principal at a school for children with autism, and I just want to applaud you for being so courageous.’

Noah just pointed to his I Don’t Want Your Pity shirt and asked for the next question... What are we doing that’s so courageous, having Asperger’s? Thanks, lady, but that didn’t take any effort on our parts, it was a gift.” n

e prepared to witness folks dangling off the Strawberry Mansion Bridge in Fairmont Park this weekend. But don’t be alarmed! In fact, instead of dialing for help, hustle over to that side of the Schuylkill for a glimpse at a performance you undoubtedly won’t see happening again this year. Conceived and expanded this year by local performance art group Invisible River, the group aims to draw attention to the beauty of the Schuylkill River. Beck Epoch is an aerial performance that audiences can witness either via boat or kayak (you can buy a “seat” on the water) or free on dry land. We spoke with choreographer, aerialist and artistic/executive director of Beck, Alie Vidich about this unique summer performance.

How did you come up with the idea for this performance?

I wanted to do a big community arts festival on the river, but I was very ambitious and I didn’t realize how much that costs. I received funding to make an aerial dance performance and that was the one piece I was able to fund that year. That piece started in 2013 as a performance and has been going on ever since. Last year, it morphed more into the community river day with a performance at the very end, which also was an outreach dance program. And this year, actually, we are running three programs and Beck Epoch is the aerial river dance.

What are the two other events that are going on this year?

One of them is a youth dance program that started two weeks ago. Then there’s the Schuylkill River Arts Day, a community family-filled river festival day that has 50 different artists performing with nine different groups.

have different activities for kids that are related to watershed education. It’s a daytime event so it’s really targeted for families. It’s on Sat., July 15 from 10am to 2pm.

What’s the training like to be able to pull off the aerial moves featured in Beck Epoch?

We’re working with the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts. I started doing aerial work from a modern dance perspective about 10 or 11 years ago with modern dancers in NYC. And then I didn’t do it for a while, and I was working on the river a lot, since I really had focused a lot of my work on making site choreography and thinking a lot about what was possible.

This year, we wanted to incorporate some circus apparatuses and we were working with them in the studio. Then we get to the bridge a few weeks ago and the wind was really, really a lot. We thought we might be able to work with a silk hammock—which is in a loop—but it was flying so many places. It was really hard to work with, so now everybody is working in a harness. That’s the one thing I’d say about working in that space, you are dealing with a lot of wind.

And do you practice on the bridge?

Yes, we have been practicing on the bridge since the 20th or the 21st. Twice a week we’ve been out there.

Tell me what inspired you to expand this year’s performance from last year.

Well, last year it wasn’t really the focus of the day. We had a lot of different things that felt like a street fair. This year, its returning back to a performance. I think our whole event was like six hours, so we kind of took what these two ideas were—which was like a river street fair with performances and a finale—and broke them into

two. We have a community river day and an evening aerial performance.

Do you get a fear of heights when performing?

I was much more afraid when I did this the first year. It hasn’t been as scary lately. I was performing last weekend and it wasn’t that high, and my arms were getting tired and I didn’t have a harness on. I was relying on my arms because I was using silk. So not for this project anymore, because I’m more used to it, but in the beginning, yes, we were very scared.

And what do you hope visitors and your audience will bring away from your performance?

Really, the idea that initially started this was to create a beautiful evening in the summer on the river and transform the landscape into a place where people just don’t pass by. A place where people stop and hang out and linger and I think that’s still the idea. I think when people leave we want them to see… a sense of energy that this is a place that belongs to everyone in Philadelphia.

Any other reasons to stop by?

We have Little Baby’s Ice Cream, which has a special Schuylkill flavor. We have a special guest, Chef X and he’s made a custom menu for the event and he’ll be vending the whole time. I just want to give a big thanks to the the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts, they have supported us a lot in this work. Two of the performers are teachers there and we’ve gotten a lot of support from the circus community. n

You Write Like a Girl “I

f the dumb boys we know can do it, so can we,” says Claire Folkman, cartoonist, co-editor and co-founder of the Dirty Diamonds anthology series. “There’s a discrepancy between women and men that’s embarrassing in comic anthologies,” says Kelly Phillips, the other half of Dirty Diamonds. This Phillybased dynamic duo were fed up. Fed up with women being largely understated in their genre of comics, but also with comics as a whole. The solution was simple: self-publish engaging sequential stories supporting and highlighting women.

Friends since seventh grade, Folkman and Phillips have been passionate and talented artists for years. Art school graduates, their journey began with a foray into doing traditional, “serious” art. But, their storied love for comic books erased traditional artmaking ambitions, pulling them into creating sequential art on juxtaposed panels.

“We weren’t going to wait for someone else to print our comic book. If you want something to exist in the world that you don’t see, go make it,” says Phillips.

“If you’re passionate about it, put all your energy into it,” says Folkman. “Oh, and believe you’re never wrong,” she adds with a laugh.

The Dirty Diamonds anthology series isn’t just a project, it’s a mission. Collecting semi-autobiographical comics by women since 2011, Dirty Diamonds is an open call to female comic creators to share their story. Each issue is centered around a theme: alcohol, jobs, travel,

breakups, comics, beauty, and the current theme of imagination. “We really like when people find the most bizarre and insane ways to interpret the theme,” says Phillips.

“It’s important for Dirty Diamonds to document how women are living now,” Folkman says. “That’s important for girls and women in the future.”

Being as ambitious as it is, DD comes with its own trials. Folkman and Phillips receive an immense amount of submissions. There are comics that need to be edited, proofread. This is collaboration of the highest level.

“You’ve got to hone everyone’s voice,” they jointly agree.

“A lot of instinct and gut reaction is involved. I trust Kelly’s faith. We wouldn’t settle for something crappy,” says Folkman. She also stresses how she’s never been one to not work on a team. “I never understood artmaking as this solitary thing you do by yourself,” explains Phillips.

“We’ve always worked in collaboration with others.”

Literature like the Dirty Diamonds anthologies, which are semi-autobiographical, can teach a lot about empathy and how people deal with life, according to Phillips.

“Comics being both visual and written gives the reader the opportunity to invest themselves in someone else’s life and perspective,” she says.

“Making an impact on a reader is invaluable. To be that launching platform for that artist to stand there and know they are a valued and treasured creator,” says Phillips.

That’s the core of the Dirty Diamonds undertaking.

The readers and the voices behind the comics are what’s most important to these wonderful women. “Yes we’re getting through to someone. It’s for everyone. It’s not written by girls for girls, it’s written by girls for everyone,” says Phillips.

“When we see fathers buy it for their kids, we know we’re doing something. Or when guys ask if they can submit, we know we’ve reached some people,” says Folkman. “We want everyone to know how good these books are, how talented these girls are.”

The two are still surprised by the number of individuals they’ve met. Submissions, panels, conventions, tweets, and emails from all over the world, have allowed them to meet, work with and connect with so many creators and fans.

What’s most special to the duo is the personal, human connection Dirty Diamonds has created. “Comics is really the first place you can see somebody else that you might not have known existed in the world. It’s a real person with a real perspective. We all have something in common, we’re so similar even through our differences,” says Folkman. n

If you and the girlfriend have a don’t ask, don’t tell policy about her hookups with others, BRUISE, then hickeys and other kinds of slow-fading marks violate the spirit of that agreement. Those kinds of marks amount to a nonverbal “tell.” You have a right to calmly point that out to your girlfriend, and she has a responsibility, in the future and in the moment, to remind/warn her outside sex partners that leaving slow-fading marks on her breasts, neck, thighs, forehead, insoles, eyelids, etc., is out of bounds.

For your part, BRUISE, don’t inspect your girlfriend post-hookup for the kinds of marks that fade quickly after sex, as that would amount to a nonverbal ask.

My first refractory period—the time it takes me to get ready to have sex again after my first orgasm—is shorter than the time it takes me to lose my erection. An extension of time for an additional 30 days may be granted at the discretion of the Sheriff upon receipt of written request from the buyer requesting the same, except when a second bidder has been duly registered.
