Bastille Day Fireman’s Ball

L

ive like a Parisian for a night at the Bastille Day Fireman’s Ball, hosted by travel and tourism professional Chloe Johnston. Also known as “Le quatorze juillet” or “La fête nationale,” Bastille Day is a celebration of French freedom.

Based on celebrations throughout Paris, the Fireman’s Ball honors the tradition of firehouses opening their doors to the public for a community-wide celebration of freedom. Bastille Day also marks the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789 and the 1792 founding of the French First Republic.

As the birthplace of America, Philadelphia is the perfect place to honor Bastille Day. In addition to celebrating French history, attendees will have the chance to meet and socialize with Philadelphia firefighters and take photos aboard one of the city’s fire trucks.

An assortment of French cuisine will be available for guests.

Satisfy your cravings with savory or sweet crepes from Philly’s Smooth Cow food truck. Havertown’s Brûlée Bakery will of-

fer baguette sandwiches, cheese and charcuterie boards, and macarons, cream puffs and cake will be provided by Bredenbeck’s Bakery of Germantown.

If you’re wondering, “What about the wine?” fear not: Since no French-inspired event is complete without something to drink, an open bar featuring summer-themed wine and beer will be available.

Dance the night away to tunes from Philly’s own Mr. Hollywood DJ, or snap some pictures with themed props in the event’s photo booth. If you get tired of dancing, take a chance on winning some raffle prizes, including an international wine basket valued at $500. Christopher Slayton: Master of Chaos

I

t was a Wednesday night in May when I met Christopher Slayton for the first time. It was late, and he was driving me and some friends home from the movie theater; he was our Uber driver. We talked about great karaoke songs (his favorite being “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers), comic book movie adaptations (we had just seen the new Captain America movie), and his upcoming scifi novel, Chaos Company, set to be released as the first of a four book series August 1, under publishing house Desert Breeze. I was lucky enough to get in touch with the writer by day, Uber driver by night, again to talk about rejection letters, Uber, Metal Gear Solid, and what it truly means to be a black artist in Philly.

Slayton has always known that he was an artist, it was merely a means of finding the right medium. After a forced stint as a musician, and failed attempts at visual art, he settled on writing in the eighth grade, and continued on through his college years at the University of Delaware. “My teachers loved it, they said ‘you should be writing outside of the assignments I give you,’” he says. “So I started doing that, and then in high school, I took it even more seriously.” It was then, in his junior year of high school, that he started writing an action adventure short story, and what would end up being the first draft of his novel Chaos Company. Inspired by his love of video games, comic book heroes, and more than a decade of martial arts training, Company is an actionpacked sci-fi novel about a team of genetically enhanced government soldiers code named the Chaos Company.

In November 2015, his story was picked up and he was offered a four-book deal by Desert Breeze Publishing, a

company looking to branch out from its regular roster of “non-erotic romance novels.”

Company’s road from inception to publishing contract was not an easy one however; before hitting a homerun with Desert Breeze, Slayton struck out with over 200 publishing houses and writing competitions. Most editors either had no place for a story like Company, or were completely off put by the emphasis on action in the story. “I remember one person was like ‘this is barbaric, this is violent, this is what’s wrong with today’s youth,’” he says. “Agents and publishers all saying ‘we’re looking for something else, this is not what we need, we have something like this already.’” Close family and friends started instructing him to maybe consider another line of work, with his mother even going so far as to pick up applications for him.

Instead of giving up on his dream of being published, Slayton decided to let the rejection motivate him to do better. He soon began to realize that it wasn’t him or his story, it was the people he was attempting to market it to. “I realized that it’s not me, [and] it’s not the people, because these people are professionals, it’s the type of professionals that I’m submitting my work to,” he says.

“I was submitting my work to people who weren’t looking to branch out; they wanted only young adult, they wanted romance, they wanted vampires, they wanted Harry Potter-like stories, and they weren’t looking to change…they were looking for what’s in, and my work as of right now, or as of last year, isn’t in.” It wasn’t until Desert Breeze, he says, that anybody found his work worth taking a chance on.

It’s obstacles like this that motivate Slayton to make it, not only for himself, but for his friends as well. For Slayton, being a black artist in Philly means using his opportunities to create opportunities for others. For example, when he needed a logo for his book and corresponding merchandise, he called up a close friend of his. “That logo [was done by] my best friend from middle school, his name is Cameron Wilson,” he says. “He’s a 26-yearold black graphic designer, and he’s still trying to make his way into the artist world, like I am, trying to get his foot in the door, so when I needed someone to draw the logo, I called him.” Being a young, black artist, he says, means “being resilient, it means not giving up, it means using every resource you can, whether it’s a mentor, family, friends, a teacher, any resource you can.”

It’s through his work, Slayton says, that he hopes to become that resource for someone else one day. “I love creating. I grew up watching tv shows with heroes in it, reading books with heroes in it, comic books with heroes in it, playing games with heroes in it, I want to be a part of that,” he says. “I want to be able to make my own list of heroes that people look up to, that people can get inspired by, the way I’m still inspired by the characters that I grew up reading.”

If he had to choose between writing and Uber: “Oh, it’s definitely the writing. Writing for me is home, it’s where I wanna be.” n

omenic Palermo was alone, packing his gear after a show in Oakland in May of last year when a group of men he didn’t know came into the room and surrounded him. One of the strangers asked to use Palermo’s phone. He knew what was happening right from the start.

“It was your typical Philadelphia-style robbery,” says Palermo, vocalist and guitarist of Philly band Nothing. “I was like, ‘Nah man, I don’t have a phone.’ Then I braced myself.”

The first blow came from behind. When Palermo turned to face his attacker, another man hit him. The five-on-one beating went on for about three minutes until someone finally saw what was happening and screamed, causing the assailants to take off.

“It doesn’t seem like a lot, but that’s like a whole cigarette of getting beat up,” Palermo says.

Palermo is speaking with me by a phone on a Tuesday afternoon before a show in San Francisco. The Philly native is in the midst of what he calls the worst weed hangover he’s ever had in his life after he and the band drove overnight from Portland down the Pacific Coast Highway, checking out the redwood forests.

It’s Palermo’s first time back in California since he was beaten, left in a pool of blood with fractures in his back and skull, and a body covered with lacerations and bruises. Palermo says his head, which was swollen to the size of a watermelon, required 19 staples.

“If it’s your time, you know you’re gonna get got,” Palermo says. “It sucks, but it’s just the nature of the world, I think.”

After the incident, Palermo couldn’t drive back to Philly with the rest of his band. He couldn’t fly either 10 | Philly Weekly | July 7 - 13, 2016 | phillyweekly.com

because doctors said the cabin pressure on the plane would have caused him excruciating pain. He was stuck in California for weeks.

Palermo says the beating was accompanied by a shift in attitude for all of the members of Nothing. Prior to Oakland, the band had been riding the unexpected success of their first LP Guilty of Everything (2014), touring hard and, according to Palermo, “ignoring life and life’s problems.”

“Just being on the road and being fucked up and dealing with this fake reality of the music world… And then, boom. It’s like running into a wall,” Palermo reflects. “A solid brick wall. Everything stops.”

During the earliest stages of his recovery, Palermo made like a Beat Generation author and headed to Big Sur to clear his head in the California wilderness.

“I spent seven days in a shitty hotel and stuffed my face with painkillers and red wine and walked around in the woods, just trying to get myself back in order a bit,” he says. “I just wrote the whole time.”

Nothing had already demoed 10 songs with producer Will Yip at Studio 4 in Conshohocken for their follow-up to Guilty of Everything, but Palermo rewrote a great deal of the record while recuperating in Big Sur. “I had no idea that this was gonna be the thing that really inspired these songs to take the shape that they did,” Palermo explains. “I was dealing with something so traumatic… It seemed impossible not to try to write.”

Nothing soon completed Tired of Tomorrow (Relapse Records), which was released in May. The album shows how Nothing’s distinct sound has continued to evolve since the band’s debut. Like on Guilty of Everything, the often-crushing distortion of droning guitars overpow-

ers melodic, harmonized vocals while breaking the barriers between alt-rock, punk and shoegaze. However, with Tired of Tomorrow, Nothing delves deeper into surreal, dreamy soundscapes, reminiscent of mid-’90s era Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead.

“I consider this record the first where you can be like, ‘OK, this is what Nothing’s sound is,’” Palermo says.

It’s a style characterized by Palermo’s unequivocally bleak lyrics, like on the suspiciously poppy “Vertigo Flowers.” The track feels so lighthearted that the darkness behind Palermo’s voice is almost hidden—“Watch out for those who dare to say that everything will be okay / Watch out for those who want to be anything at all.”

The pessimism in Palermo’s work reflects a perception shaped by difficult situations, tragedy and unlikely craziness. He grew up in the crime-ridden Frankford and Kensington sections of the city, where he became vocalist for the promising hardcore band Horror Show in 1999. The band eventually signed with record label Deathwish Inc, but then Palermo was convicted on aggravated assault and attempted murder charges, which stemmed from a brawl in Camden in 2002. He spent two years in a New Jersey prison.

Palermo says the events that led to his incarceration were indicative of the violent nature of his neighborhood at the time.

“It just comes with the territory. I don’t want to be cliché and say I’m a product of my environment, (but) there’s a lot of people I grew up with in that area that did things that are, like, unthinkable,” Palermo says. “It was pretty normal.”

“I seemed to dodge some bullets, but you can’t dodge them all,” he adds. “I bit off more than I could chew.”

Palermo said reading and writing were like addictions for him while locked up.

He devoured the work of poets and storytellers like Allen Ginsberg and Richard Brautigan. He cites French existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre’s novel Nausea, which was sent to Palermo by his brother and was the first book he received in prison, as having a huge impact on his mindset.

After his release, Palermo says he came home and “things really started to fall apart at that point.” Two of his best friends were killed, including Horror Show guitarist Josh Tshirlig.

“After [Tshirlig] passed, it was a really crushing blow to me as far as music went,” Palermo says. “It left a sour taste in my mouth.”

Palermo spent the following years in a haze, wandering, trying to fill the void with “various substances and people with no substance.” He says he hit rock bottom in 2010 in Joshua Tree, Calif., trying to make extra money selling drugs to hippies.

“I ate a bunch of drugs one night and had this mental breakdown/epiphany: I need to go back to Philly. What the fuck am I doing out here? Stop running,” Palermo recalls. “And that’s it. I moved back.”

He formed Nothing and released a demo titled Poshlost in 2011.

“I never expected anything from this band, honestly,” Palermo says. “It was just a way for me to cope with a ton of problems I was having in my life. I was hanging from the end of a frayed rope.”

By 2014, Nothing’s lineup had solidified to include Palermo, Brandon Setta (guitars/vocals), Nick Bassett (bass), and Kyle Kimball (drums). Palermo says he had planned on making one album with the band, then calling it quits with music.

“Then the LP [Guilty of Everything] did really well, and now there’s another one…” Palermo says. “I’m still doing music. I’m grateful for sure, but it was definitely never expected.”

The turmoil didn’t end for Palermo with the brutal beating in Oakland, which left him with residual effects including bouts of vertigo, headaches, back pain, and a left ear that’s slowly losing hearing. A few months after the attack, Palermo’s father died in a freak accident while riding his bicycle. During a bad rainstorm, he was blown off the bike, hit his head, and slid into a ditch that was filled with water.

“He was just knocked unconscious and just drowned facedown in the puddle,” Palermo says. “That was pretty much the cherry on top of the cake at that point.

It was like ‘Really?’ You gotta be kidding me.’”

Palermo says he had a complicated relationship with his father, but it had been improving over the past decade.

“There was a lot of things I never had a chance to talk to him about when I was younger,” Palermo says. “When he went,

he took it all with him.”

Around the same time, Nothing was dealing with a record label decision gone wrong. The band had chosen to leave Relapse to release Tired of Tomorrow with Collect Records, a label started by Geoff Rickly of post-hardcore band Thursday.

Palermo says Rickly told the band his label had a financial backer, who was an old Thursday fan.

This backer turned out to be Martin Shkreli, the pharmaceutical executive/ nightmare person who raised the price of a lifesaving AIDS drug to $750 per tablet from $13.50 in 2015.

When the drug controversy first started to break, Palermo says a friend tipped him off that Shkreli was involved with Collect.

Palermo started doing his own research and realized just how bad things were.

“I’m not the kind of person to judge anybody. I have my own problems and stuff, but there was just so much of myself dumped into this record. The last thing that I would want it to be is tainted by someone so thoughtless… Someone so obsessed with something like money that it would allow them to destroy other human lives,” Palermo says. “I’m not putting this music that I bled literally and figuratively over in the hands of this guy.”

When Nothing left Collect, Palermo says the other artists on the label started to follow suit within the next few days. Nothing soon rejoined the roster of Relapse. Rickly, as shocked as anyone by Shkreli’s repugnant behavior, cut ties with the Thursday fan-turned-super villain. “(Rickly) really got railroaded by the whole thing and it was fucked up,” Palermo says. “That’s my homie, for sure.”

Despite the unfortunate circumstances that hover like a dark cloud over the band, Palermo knows he’s lucky to have people like Nothing’s fans. During the band’s stop in Chicago on the current tour, someone smashed the windows of their van and stole Palermo’s luggage, including all of his clothes, and his notebook containing original lyrics for Nothing’s two albums.

“But you know, the cool thing is that I send out a tweet now and say what happened and tell everybody that I don’t have clothes. Then we go to play these shows and in every city, probably six people show up with little bags with t-shirts and socks and stuff like that,” Palermo says.

“So, bad things happen, but I think about the kind of people I have supporting me and it’s hard to ignore. It’s hard to be negative when you have something like that.

There’s people dealing with much worse things than this and they don’t have anybody. It’s pretty reassuring sometimes.” n

first met Amanda Wolfson through a friend of a friend as “ the girl who makes crazy colored make-up here in Philly.” Intrigued by that description I stalked her on social media and found a slew of said crazy colors gracing the faces of men and women of all shapes and sizes. A few product samples later (that smelled and tasted amazing, I might add) and I was ready to find out more about how this 24-year old Philly native and recent Drexel grad, has become a budding social media makeup star.

How did you get started with Baby Bat? It started when I started getting popular on Instagram because I was doing some modeling. I saw a bunch of brands that I’ve never heard of before that were getting really popular due to social media and word of mouth and I figure that I could do that. We had Lime Crime, it’s a really popular indie brand that was started by one woman. It’s pretty inspiring and I figured I could try that.

What did it take to go from feeling you had the style and the inside industry to know how to do it to actually being able to formulate and craft these products?

It took a lot of research because I was in school for psychology so I really wasn’t in school for business or anything that would relate to this. I had to teach myself everything and it took a while of research, but once you know what you’re doing, it’s pretty simple.

What’s one of the lessons you’ve learned from that experience?

If you need help, ask somebody. I made a lot of friends who own companies and do what I do, it’s nice to know that you have people to lean on and help you when you need them.

It’s a community (mumbling), it’s nice.

What sets your product line apart from the other makeup lines out there.

I feel like mine is more fun and colorful. There are other brands that are colorful, like Lime Crime which is a big inspiration for me, but I feel like I bring products that are cruelty free, a lot of them are vegan and I try to use natural ingredients. I bring all that stuff into more fun colors and products that everybody can use. I mean, I make green and blue lipstick so anybody could wear them. (mumbling)

I was going to ask about those unusual colors. Do you think there’s a real need for something different than what you see in the drugstore aisles?

Yes, definitely. I feel like even drugstore are starting to become more me because I think they see what indie brands are doing and they’re trying to jump on that bandwagon.

Is social media essential for you business?

Oh definitely. That’s literally how everyone knows about us, through our Instagram. It’s

so easy to just take a picture and hundreds of thousands of people can see it.

How much of a challenge is it for you to make the products vegan or cruelty free?

No, actually making things vegan and cruelty free is easier than using the alternative.

I think that it’s a little bit cheaper too. I don’t know why more brands aren’t vegan because it’s honestly not that hard to formulate something.

I feel like people are becoming more conscious about what they’re eating and what they’re putting on their skin. They really aren’t trying to be fooled by the big makeup companies that just put any old ingredients in their makeup. People are educating themselves so as a business owner, you need to put your best foot forward and put out the best product that you can.

Do you feel like you are definitely doing something different from your friends owning a business at this age?

Yes, it’s a different path but it’s fun. I kind of just fell into it, but I’m glad that I did.

What colors would you recommend people try out and maybe experiment with for summer?

I make these metallic lipsticks that are great for summer. I’m also going to be making lipsticks that glow under black light, which can be fun for festivals and parties. Just try something new and colorful.

How do you create your products?

I make them myself. It’s a lot of research but once you know what you’re doing, it’s second nature.

What’s your favorite piece in your line?

It would probably be the metallic lip cream in the color nebula. It’s such a metallic purple but in some lights it looks more cool. It’s a really magical color.

Where did the name for your company come from?

It honestly just popped in my head one day.

I wanted something that was cute but also a little bit edgy. I didn’t want it to sound too scary and off-putting to some people so I just figured that it would be a cute name. n For more info, visit babybatbeauty.com

qFlix: Philly’s LGBTQ Film Festival T hom Cardwell can be credited as the keeper of the flame when it comes to the LGBTQ film festival scene in the city. As founder and producer of qFLIX Philadelphia, Cardwell has been providing the means for audiences to experience stories and visions of LGBTQ film from around the world for decades. Recently, I chatted with Cardwell about the upcoming film festival (from July 5-10) and about the festival’s celebration of diversity, tolerance, acceptance and open-mindedness.

proceed along, we all have to be more conscious of that.

The other aspect of programming is you want to have a variety of programs in a genre. For example, you can have some documentaries that are about politics or about civil rights, or you can have a documentary about fashion, or just some guilty pleasures that are for total enjoyment.

And then you want to have films that really have a message. In both the opening night film, People You May Know and the closing night film, Shared Rooms, the theme is relationships; a definition and a redefinition of the basic social unit of a family: Biological families, extended families, which of course includes your lovers, your neighbors, your families.

How did you become a part of qFlix? qFLIX actually grew out of the former qFEST, which was the LBGTQ film fest in Philadelphia for 19 years. TLA Entertainment was a major sponsor and producer of the festival, but when they sold the company, they downsized it to some New York investors. Those fellows decided not to continue the festival.

I was an employee, and I had been with the company for years—and had various managerial positions within the company. The new owners said they were going to reorganize the company and the focus, in terms of business, and they were not going to produce any film festivals.

So, I met with them, and asked them if they had any objections with me continuing the festival. I explained that I would found it and produce it with James Duggan, who’s now the other producer of qFLIX. James and I decided we shouldn’t even skip a year— the last qFEST was 2013 and then as I said, this change came over internally and externally—and as we all know, within the video industry—so, we went out and appealed to various volunteers and business owners in the Gayborhood, the Philadelphia Cultural Fund and the Sofitel Hotel—who have been our hotel sponsor for years now— and others. And then we said, “Let’s at least have some kind of festival.”

So we cut back in 2014 since we didn’t necessarily have all those resources that we previously had for the city’s LGBTQ film festival. But we put it all together and we’ve been building it ever since. So, this qFLIX Philadelphia 2016 is the third one!

Is the film festival sort of a tradition for Philly, then?

Absolutely! We also talk about continuing the “22,” if we count the previous “19,” to continue the tradition. And you know Philadelphians love tradition! So one of our mottos is continuing that 22 year tradition, and it works for everybody that’s involved. And we also decided to change management and producers—and other aspects of the festival—like when we decided we would change the name.

James, my partner, actually came up with “qFLIX,” and then people kind of got it, not that it has any affiliation from “Netflix.” And we just kind of decided that our motto would be: New name, new attitude, new media.

We started including new media forms beyond film, too.

And that’s really how we came about. We’re continuing onward—we’re even speculating about what we want to do in 2017 to keep the tradition going.

What are your tasks as producer?

It seems like the screening process for film selection could be overwhelming. What is that time like before the festival?

ally multitasking and handling lots of jobs. Especially as we try to build an organization and a new non-profit; it takes a number of years to kind of “build out.” So, my job, as an example, I am working with the press, looking for sponsors and donors. I’m doing a lot of programming and working with others on our team with events.

And James, the other producer, is handling operations, financing, print trafficking, the website, social media.

I think multitasking is highly overrated but that’s what you have to do to get it done.

How do you choose the films that will run during the festival?

In terms of the programming, there are certain criteria that you want to offer the audience: all-inclusiveness, diversity and really, a film that is shown in the festival is a film that the audience may not have the opportunity to see anywhere else—despite all of the ways that we can all watch films—but not every film gets streamed online by all of these outlets.

We also try to look for festival alum and undiscovered, new, young, first-time filmmakers. And that comes to us in a lot of ways. For instance, particularly with our submissions coming through “FilmFreeway” this year, the pricing is less than the competitors. We’ve got films from all over the world—that international flair in the festival is very, very important.

We had a film from Trinidad, and I can tell you we don’t have many films coming from that location, and it was a feature-film. And we have films from Australia, from France and Great Britain, and Mexico. The other thing is, once you find films from Saudi Arabia or Kenya, you find that those were banned by their governments.

So, you have those aspects. And one of the reasons you want an international dimension to the programming is, I think, because it reflects the cultural, social, economic, moral, religious differences and similarities that LGBTQ people in their own nations deal with.

It doesn’t have to be a documentary, but you get a taste of what it’s like to be an LGBTQ person in Trinidad, Mexico or China. And I’m a believer in the Global Village, even if that’s a cliche and over-used term, but with globalization, all of these things matter even more. As we

There’s a number of things that go into it. In terms of how films come into the festival, there’s a few festival submission online companies. One is called “Withoutabox” and another one is called “FilmFreeway.” So, when filmmakers are looking online to see where they can submit their films, the Internet has made that process a lot simpler for everybody. So, some films have come to us that way.

This will be my 33rd festival, because I did 11 up at Mainstream Philadelphia Film Festival, and then 22 of these, so I know a lot of people and a lot of filmmakers.

So quite honestly too, there are a lot of referrals that are direct to me. There’s a lot of that kind of networking— friends of friends, distributors who want their films in festivals before they release them to Netflix, theaters, or anywhere that’s streaming—they want to get feedback from a festival audience, they want that “coverage” before it’s released. They want to have a resume that the film has toured the country and has won festival awards, and things like that.

Also, we do have a volunteer screening committee. I hesitate to even call them “Volunteer Program Directors,” because really, they are so exceptional with the way they program the films.

We’re undergoing a lot of changes very rapidly, in terms of what everyone has been used to in our daily lifestyle, and so I don’t want to have too many films on the same topic and there of course are films about samesex marriage, for instance. We have about 57 films, and you know, we want variety.

One interesting trend I wanted to mention about the programming, in terms of variety, I noticed that a lot of the entries, especially the features and the shorts— whether they’re USA or French or Mexican—I find the breaking down of stereotypes, of particularly the gaymale stereotype: What they look like, how they act, what social class they come from, what religion they are. For several films, it’s not a major theme, but especially films that are focused on youth, bisexuality will somewhere be in the film—where 10 years ago, I think the gay-male film would focus specifically on male-gender sex and love, and not do that crossover thing.

And the same for transgender. Of course we have some films, like “Real Boy,” which is a fascinating documentary, about their transition from their family, to their school, to their job and to their lives—I also find that in a lot of these newer films and these younger directors there’s this

distinct voice with a transgender character. And really, it’s written into the script very genuinely, and it’s a reflection of a generation and how they operate.

What makes you most excited about this year’s festival?

What excites me is seeing how the audience responds to the films. We all bring our own perspective and our own baggage—sometimes luxury baggage, and sometimes real used, beat up baggage— and so people will have this unique, different, special and purposeful viewing, versus just “going to the movies.” And because you’re sitting at this festival with an audience, there’s going to be some debate and some exchanging of ideas, sometimes in contrast, in conflict, or sometimes complementary. But I’m always interested in knowing that, and I think the filmmakers find it fascinating and interesting, too. I’m excited to meet the talent too, whether they’ve been before or I’ve never met them.

Speaking of the audience, what do you think festival-goers absolutely need to know before coming to qFLIX? Any insider tips?

I think people should know that we have more films, we have more variety in terms of the programming. If they want to know more about the film, the festival or events, they should frequent our website because, of course, that’s immediate information for them.

I think they should approach the festival differently than they would if they were going to see a film in the theater.

mind. There are quality films, but they are made on smaller budgets—they are Indie films. So, there isn’t a film here that took 1 million dollars to produce. So, you have to give a little “sway,” because maybe everything isn’t as perfect.

I think that the audience should think about it as a communal experience, even if they are going by themselves, because I think that it is a communal experience and there is a spirit about being in the theaters when you’re at a film festival.

And that you have a shared commonality: You have a passion for film. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be there.

The other thing I want to say is, that I always tell people is, that with a film festival, you should always choose something outside of your movie-going habit; something outside of your comfort zone. Maybe you don’t go to the foreign films that are in theaters these days because you don’t like to read subtitles. And the younger you are, the less you were brought up with that—I’m 71, so reading subtitles in foreign films began at age 16, so it’s not something I think about. So, maybe you don’t have a particular interest in Mexico, say, but go see this Mexican film. Or maybe you’re not interested in fashion, but go watch “The Women He’s Undressed.” Maybe you’re not interested in politics, but go see the documentary called “Animals.” You will learn something new and you will discover something new—maybe you won’t enjoy something but you’ll say, “That was an interesting hour and a half.” n

Scenes From a Marriage

M

y wife and I have been married for 14 years and in a committed (I assumed) relationship for 17 years. Sex between us (often kinky) has always been great. We have a wonderful life together and two perfect children. I thought we were good; turns out things were too good to be true. I learned recently that my wife has been unfaithful to me throughout our marriage. She began an affair with an older man soon before we were married, and they were physically intimate for five years, including bondage and a Master/sub relationship. The physical sex stopped, but phone sex and online flirting continued up until I discovered this two weeks ago. This is a man I know.

She has introduced our children to him. There’s more: She slept with another man (just once, more bondage) but also flirted with him online and met up with him while I was away.

She slept with yet another man she works with (just once, vanilla this time). She had phone sex with at least two other men and flirted with still more on Facebook. This came out because I was jealous about something that now seems minor and checked her e-mail. (Not proud of that.) She is repentant and relieved that I finally know, and she promises that she will be faithful from now on. I’ll always love her, and I know she loves me. We had one session with a counselor and another is scheduled. Results were mixed.

One thing that came out was that she has never been faithful to a romantic/sexual partner. I could forgive a one-time drunken fling, but this is a consistent pattern of infidelity that runs from the beginning of our marriage, and I had no idea. I cannot process it. I thought she had always been as loyal as I’ve been, which is to say completely. I can’t put my wedding ring on—it feels like a lie. I have no one to talk to.

For the sake of our future, the love we still share, and our children, we are committed to fixing things, but we’re not sure how. —Heartbroken And Devastated I’m going to preface my response with what someone in my position is expected to say and what, given the circumstances, may even be true: Your marriage is over.

The scale, duration, and psychological cruelty of your wife’s betrayals may be too great for you to overcome.

But you didn’t need me to tell you that, HAD. You knew that already. So I can only assume you wrote wanting to hear something else. You don’t need me to outline the reasons you should leave, and you don’t need my permission to go. You wrote because you’re looking for a reason to stay.

I’ll give it my best shot.

A long-term relationship is a myth two people create together. It’s not chemistry, it’s not math, it’s not engineering. It’s a story, HAD, a story we tell each other, a story we tell others, and a story we tell ourselves.

And sometimes it’s a story we have to revise.

Right now, it feels like the story you’ve been telling yourself and others about your marriage is a lie: not partly, but wholly. You thought your marriage was a loving, committed, and “completely loyal” one, but it’s not—it can’t be, and it never was, because she was cheating on you from the beginning.

But loyalty isn’t something we demonstrate with our genitals alone. Your wife wasn’t loyal to you sexually, HAD, and that’s painful. And the conventional “wisdom” is that people don’t cheat on partners they love. But you were married to this woman, and you describe your

marriage as good, loving, and wonderful. And it somehow managed to be all those things despite your wife’s betrayals. She must have been loyal to you in other ways or you would’ve divorced her long before you discovered her infidelities. Think back over the last 17 years: every kind and loving gesture, every considerate action, every intimacy, every moment you took care of each other— was it all a lie?

I’m not trying to exonerate your wife, and I’m not trying to minimize her betrayal or your pain. But if you want to stay together, HAD, you’re going to have to tell yourself a new story, one that makes room for contradiction (loves you, cheated on you), betrayal (shitloads), apologies (shitloads from her), forgiveness (shitloads from you), and… some accommodations going forward. If I may paraphrase Maya Angelou: When someone finally shows you who they are—after you found the incriminating emails—you should believe them. Your wife has never been faithful to you or to anyone else, HAD, at least not sexually. Adjusting your expectations and making accommodations accordingly is more realistic than expecting your wife to become a different person.

Finally, HAD, a little bonus advice. I ran into Esther Perel, author of Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence, the day your letter arrived. Perel is a psychotherapist and couples counselor whose most recent TED Talk (“Rethinking Infidelity”) is one you’re going to want to watch.
