Wawa Welcome America

T

here’s no better way to ring in America’s 240th birthday than in the city where it all started. To celebrate the week leading up to the Fourth of July, Wawa Welcome America presents a series of events, film screenings, concerts, exhibits and more.

Free museum days will take place throughout the week. Hear and see incredible stories at the African American Museum in Philadelphia or visit the Rodin Museum, the Barnes Foundation, the National Constitution Center and the National Museum of American Jewish History. On Wednesday, the 54 branches of the Free Library will be hosting a citywide reading event, with free books given to the first 100 children to arrive.

Thursday’s festivities take you to the National Constitution Center to learn about the Constitution in the city where it was written. While you’re there, cast your vote for Wawa’s next featured hoagie! At the airport, hour-long tours will guide visitors though Philadelphia’s history of presidential conventions.

Wawa celebrates the armed forces and police and fire departments at Thursday’s annual Hoagie Day extravaganza. It only seems fitting—in 1992, on the first Hoagie Day, then-mayor Ed Rendell declared the hoagie the “Official Sandwich of Philadelphia.” There will be five tons of hoagies on the lawn of Independence Mall at noon, all available to the public for free. The USO Show Troupe, known

for its televised and private tributes to service members, will perform alongside celebrity chef Robert Irvine from the Food Network.

With a full belly, head to the Mummers Museum to learn how to dress and walk like a Mummer. At night, the South Philly String Band—2016 Mummers champions—will perform a free concert.

Head to Penn’s Landing on Friday for a free concert by the Philadelphia Orchestra, followed by fireworks. On Sunday, Old City becomes the Historic Philadelphia Block Party. Between 5th and 6th Streets from Market to Chestnut, 20 food trucks will set up shop along with interactive games and family-friendly fun. Wawa, Tastykake and Bassett’s Ice Cream will be handing out delicious eats and treats.

The Celebration of Freedom Ceremony on July 4 at Independence Hall will feature guest speakers Mayor Jim Kenney and Leslie Odom, Jr., from the Broadway hit Hamilton. After the parade, head to the Parkway to score a spot on the lawn and settle in for a concert featuring Odom, Jr., Yazz the Greatest and a slew of other performers. At the end of the concert, the grand finale fireworks will go off, accompanied by quotes and soundtrack, reminding viewers of the history of Independence in Philadelphia. —CARInE LAVACHE

Philly Reacts to Brexit

T

he British people’s decision to leave the European Union has been causing aftershocks all over the continent and making international headlines. We decided to ask a few locals for their opinion on “Brexit” and what, if any, impact it might have on us here in the States. Taking to the streets, we were met with more than a few “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” But Philly, in the end, came through with a variety of thoughts on the matter.

I think it’s really bad. I think England made a bad choice and they don’t realize it, and it was driven by prejudice and no other substantial facts, and they’re going to have a lot of consequences over the next couple months. I think a lot of businesses who have offices in Philly have offices abroad that do business with the EU, so I think, for those businesses it’s going to change the way they do things.

I know someone who is being sent to London on an emergency to try to resolve the situation and how it affects his office in Philly. I think it does affect us.

Business contracts will be honored and things will evolve slowly. This is uncharted territory for the EU, and plans will be carefully developed. Tourism and commerce are likely to increase as the US dollar will be stronger against the British pound and the euro. The UK is one of our region’s most significant trading partners, and the British American Business Council (BABC) of Greater Philadelphia, serving Southeastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey and Delaware will do everything we can to maintain and build that relationship not only with the UK but with all of Europe.

But, as the UK has the world’s fifth largest economy and the UK and U.S. are important trading partners with each other, these relationships may not change. Short-term, as we have seen, the markets have reacted to the uncertainty, as they always do in any crisis. The Prime Minister’s resignation and the likely vote of nonconfidence in the Labour Party leader has added to the mix. So now you have the two largest parties looking for new leadership and the fact that Scotland may vote again on a decision to leave Britain. That’s a lot of short term turmoil in a compressed period of time.

This has all happened in the week leading up to July 4—while America continues to celebrate its Independence from the British 240 years ago, clearly the ties between the two nations still run deep, both culturally and economically —Howard Silverstone, prior BABC President; current Programs & Events Chairman; long term Board Member; business owner and Brit Okay. So Britain voted to leave the EU. and even if they left for positive reasons, or self preservation, it doesn’t work for the liberal world order who will tell you “the voter demographic were all uneducated xenophobes.” How many times have the liberals used that psychological tactic to push more mindless drones in their direction? At the end of the day, there’s nothing to lose when it comes to leaving the EU, unless you’re one of the vampire countries suckling the blood of the others who built something for their children’s future. And that’s what it comes down to: do you believe what you build for your children should go to them, or to the state?

Now, you can quote all the financial reasons why you think they are shooting themselves in the foot. For most, that’s not what it’s about. With the highest real estate prices in the world, they are losing their ability to afford their homes. At the end of the day, too much power in too few hand is always a bad idea. People are different around the world, and if you’re not going to shame Saudi Arabia for their treatment of women and homosexuals, don’t give Britain a hard time for wanting to give their children what they built.

How Philly’s New School Holidays Are Changing Perceptions

O

n the last day of May, Philadelphia became the second major city in the nation to recognize the Muslim holidays Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha in its public school district following New York City, which recognized the holidays last year.

The historic bill was proposed in January by City Councilman Curtis Jones Jr., who is Muslim, and backed by the Philadelphia Eid Coalition, a group pushing for the inclusion of the Eid holidays in the public school calendar. The law has drawn support from Mayor Jim Kenney, who is now hoping to extend the holiday not only to Muslim students but also to the city workers through a task force he recently convened, whose decision will have to be approved by the city’s labor unions.

The newly recognized holidays will affect the roughly 200,000 students living in the city by next school year, which includes the 134,538 students in the School District of Philadelphia and 63,441 charter school students that typically follow the public school calendar, according to the School District of Philadelphia’s office of communication.

“Since the start of my term as Mayor, I’ve been committed to working to make the city a more diverse and inclusive place for all,” Kenney said at a press conference on May 31 announcing the recognition of the holidays.

The Philadelphia Eid Coalition, in a statement on its website, called the addition of the holidays a “major step towards true fairness and inclusion”. The School District of Philadelphia—which has worked alongside lawmakers and the Philadelphia Eid Coalition in recognizing the holidays—was joyous of the decision to pass Jones’ bill.

“We are happy to be part of the group that came together to recognize the two Eid holidays,” Fernando Gallard, chief of communications for the School District of Philadelphia, said. “We felt it was important for our students. We have Muslim students and Muslim staff that have spoken about the importance of the holidays.”

Although this is a step forward for First Amendment supporters and religious freedom advocates, there is still a haze of Islamophobia lingering not only over Philadelphia but the nation as well due in part, according to some critics, to the presidential election and recent shootings, including the Orlando, Florida nightclub shooting on June 12.

“What is unique about now is that we’re in such a worldwide controversial time when it comes to relations between people around the world globally, Muslims and non-Muslims, and it’s important for there to be beacons of civility, of inclusion, around the world, that say, ‘We’re not going to buy into the madness,’” Jones said.

The Democratic councilman said that some lawmakers are setting precedent by easing negative connotations toward Muslims, such as when London Mayor Sadiq Kahn, who is Muslim, speaks out against terrorism and Philadelphia Mayor Kenney fights discrimination against Muslims. Jones said these examples are “beacons of sanity that will keep us from being emo-

tionally lured by Donald Trump.”

Trump, the Republican presidential front-runner, has called for harsher immigration policies ranging from denying refugees from Middle East countries for fear of ties to the Islamic State to building a wall on the border of Mexico.

Jacob Bender, director of the Philadelphia chapter of the national Council on American-Islamic Relations, said that his office has seen an increase in reports of school bullying and workplace discrimination against Muslims in the city in recent months, which he believes is due to the negative portrayal of Muslims in the presidential election cycle.

He’s hopeful, however, that the newly recognized Muslim holidays of Eid can reverse discrimination in Philadelphia and create a more pluralistic and accepting culture regarding religions within the city.

“When there’s acceptance of one’s tradition and holidays, it makes the practitioners, believers and followers of a particular faith feel respected on the same level of other Americans,” he said, adding that the acceptance of one culture’s religion can lead to mutual respect.

Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are Muslim holidays celebrated worldwide. The first is celebrated after the month of Ramadan, which this year ends on July 5; the latter is to celebrate Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son for God. Along with Philadelphia and New York City, the holidays are also recognized in the Washington D.C. suburb of Montgomery County, which has a population of over 1 million.

According to the most recent Philadelphia public school calendar, schools and administrative offices are closed for the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur—although Christmas always falls on the district’s winter recess, the Christian holy day of Good Friday also sees a district-wide day off (falling in the spring recess, but noted in the calendar), with the other major holiday, Easter being on non-school Sundays.

The addition of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha to Philadelphia’s school calendar “makes the point that the Muslim community is accepted here as part of the body politic,” said Bender, who is the first Jewish director of a Council on American-Islamic Relations chapter.

He said that the recognition of the holidays also supports the notion that the Muslim “community is not foreign, that Islam is not a threat—it’s far from it. The principles of Islam are perfectly aligned with pluralism and democracy and the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.”

Some critics of the decision to include the Eid holidays are concerned that they were only added to the school calendar in order to pander to Muslims.

Daniel Pipes, president of the Middle East Forum, a pro-Israel think tank, said that if the decision of putting the holidays on the city’s public school calendar was practical then he is fine with it, but he would oppose it if it were decided for political reasons.

“It’s only practical if you have a lot of students who are not going to be in school—you don’t have school that day. I don’t see that as a problem,” he said.

“But if it is official Muslim organizations getting special dissertation to acknowledgment of Islamic holidays in order to make a political point, or for any other reason, then I’m against it,” he added. “What I worry about here is politicization.”

The School District of Philadelphia could not provide statistics on the number of Muslim students in enrollment, citing the laws that do not permit inquiries about religion.

Jones, however, said most officials believe that there are 200,000 Muslims living in Philadelphia—a number he said is regarded as a conservative estimate.

When gathering information “we obviously looked at census numbers where people self-identified as Muslims,” the councilman said, as well as other data such as estimates from the Philadelphia Housing Authority.

The most recent census data from 2010 put the number of Muslims in Philadelphia around 40,000—although it has been reported that the number has rose significantly over the past several years.

There are currently no plans in the state Legislature to make Pennsylvania the first state to create a law to add the holiday to school districts with high populations of Muslims, but Gov. Tom Wolf is planning to host an event this September, such as an Iftar dinner, to invite Muslims to the Governor’s Mansion in Harrisburg to make the building more accessible to people of all demographics, according to his office. In April, the governor hosted the first-ever Seder dinner at the building Jones, however, is satisfied with the decision Philadelphia has made to recognize the holidays and isn’t currently concerned about a statewide law.

“What we wanted to do is live up to the tenet that this city was founded on: to be a city of brotherly love and religious inclusion,” he said.

Jones believes the recognition of the Eid holidays will create a dialogue promoting acceptance and understanding of religions. He recalls when he was first elected to City Council that it was this sort of dialogue between colleagues that helped break down barriers.

“Someone asked me, ‘Well, you’re Muslim?’ and I said, ‘Yes.’ And then they started asking me dozens of questions, and that kind of dialogue demystifies the religion,” he said. n

ro-country may still be a slick, preeminent sub-genre within country music’s rural firmament and tanned, brawny dudes such as Kenny Chesney pack stadiums with their gentlemanly jive. Yet, in the middle of June—on the same week Dolly Parton sold out the Mann and Dixie Chicks, the BB&T Pavilion—South Philly’s once-and-former bastion of barroom C&W, Boot & Saddle, hosted a record release party for bittersweet Emily “Birdie” Busch. The longtime Philly-folk-country queen, who released her first record in 2006 (The Ways We Try), stood on the crammed tight stage debuting her sixth album—the psychedelic-tinged Thunder Bridge— with her elegant nuanced voice and her strangely subtle avant-hillbilly band beside her. “I love how eccentric country music got in the 1960s with Lee Hazlewood, Roger Miller, Hazel Atkins,” says Busch.

She quickly adds Germantown jazz man Sun Ra to that list, if only for the “emotional influence,” poetic inspiration (the title Thunder Bridge is a reference to a line in his poem “We Must Not say No to Ourselves”) and overall willingness to free one’s mind so that her boots will follow.

Busch is not alone as a local cowgirl with-or-without the blues.

At Bob & Barbara’s twice-monthly Wednesdays, singers Hannah Taylor and Sarah Larsen rule the roost, Larsen in particular being a sub-genre of her own; a fiddler and a vocalist with the hootenannying Hurricane Hoss and her folksy trio Ladybird both readying new albums for autumn release. April Mae Iorio is a sassy, South Jersey lass with several wild acts under her wide belt, the boldest of which—April Mae & The June Bugs—is a hot mess of hillbilly balladry, country swing, jump blues and hard-nosed rockabilly (plus, her Sun Kissed album came out in June). Caroline Leap too is a local lass with a western swing sting. Black Horse Motel is a long-running dark country quintet with three women and an album due out soon. Then there’s the obvious folkcountry influence on Philly alternative names such as the girl-fronted Hop Along and Cayetana whose twang is as strong and windy as their tang. Even Philly’s most prominent C&W radio station, WXTU FM, has a Philly country lily, Andie Summers, as its morning show co-host.

Not all of these Philly country lasses got to C&W or bluegrass as purists (Busch certainly started out folksy, with Larsen starting out through classical and Mae a one-time metal head), but they got there and hold high places of prominence within Philly’s music scene—country or otherwise. “Hannah, like Sarah, is central to that,” says booker/promoter Jesse Lundy who has slotted these ladies into the Philadelphia Folk Fest as well as the Ardmore Music Hall; both venues that Busch, Mae and most of the aforementioned local country women have played. “They’re big collaborators with all the acts, great singers, have unique looks and vibes. They’re kingpins of the thing.”

Maybe queen pins is a better term.

When Busch started playing and singing in Philly circa 2002, there was no country scene in Philly, let alone one guided by women. Hell, Boot & Saddle was but a glint in its developer’s eye, a long-shuttered tap room that hadn’t seen natural light since 1996 when it closed as a C&W saloon for visiting sailors and leathery punks. “I have found myself always residing in a place—musically, song-wise—where people are never really sure what to define it as,” says Busch, thinking of her newer works such as

Thunder Bridge. “I’ve grown to like that,” she continues, acknowledging her initial inspirations of Willie Nelson and Patsy Cline cassettes played in her family’s station wagons (“and we went through 3 Woodie Wagons”) before adolescence took hold. While such deep-rooted influence didn’t come out in Busch’s writing until age 15, Busch never set out to sing anything traditionally, let alone country. “I’ve just meant to keep to the tradition of honoring my voice, and sometimes it can lead to being a misfit booking-wise. I mean, I can do whatever I want and I usually do. Ha. It’s worked out. I’ve always had the prismatic approach, and I think some people want to be walloped on the head with a single influence or a crazy story, especially people booking festivals or clubs elsewhere, and yeah, that can be a challenge to get people to take a chance and step out of that slant.”

Between 2008 and 2010 however, Busch took the bull by the horns and became the femme focus of country club nights (“Barstool Mountain”) and created her own live music-and-hillbilly DJ parties, Philly Opry. Co-created

by Busch and Johnny Brenda’s (then) booking mistress, Brandy Hartley, Philly Opry was meant to emulate Chicago’s long-running urban cowboy soiree Devil in a Woodpile, using old country variety shows (such as Hee Haw) as its visual inspiration. “You know, where the stage sets were so outrageous and goofy and everyone seemed to have such presence,” says Busch. Gearing up for this autumn’s fifth Philly Opry at JBs, Busch says she likes showcasing both local and traveling acts for a diverse country-fied spectrum, the sounds of which spice up her new, broad Thunder Bridge, with its uneasy spaciousness and psychedelic nuances nestled against her melodic country-fied coo. “The best country music to me has always resided in a sonic swamp, so I’ve tried to give people an experience of swimming in that said lagoon of Brigadoon. I guess much in the same way people say rock and rock is a state of mind not a sound, I kind of feel that way about country. We contain multitudes. Music is an endless well.”

Around the same time Busch was ramping-up Philly Opry and expanding her sound (Thunder Bridge has been in the works for a minute), April Mae—a music scene vet as the blues-belter of South Saturn Delta— began touring throughout the South, before bringing country, rockabilly, bluegrass and Pete Seeger-ish roots up North. “April Mae & The June Bugs was born in 2010,” she says, crediting Wanda Jackson, Janice Martin and Elvis Presley as early loves. “R&B, gospel, and what they called hillbilly music back then are the ingredients, and when it exploded it was like wild fire.”

Mae is a real pistol. A brassy singer, kazoo-ist and washboard player, she tells mildly bawdy stories like the one that goes, “My Portuguese grandparents actually met on South Street during a Halloween parade. Grandpa used to say that he was walking behind my grandma and liked the view.” When she discusses her brand of hillbilly music, she mentions its roots in Memphis’ Sun Studios in Memphis, where it was recorded—“all live on gorgeous 1940’s vintage microphones to get that Sun feel and keep it real, no auto tunes, no looping”—while brandishing her South Jersey roots just as much as the music’s down-South heritage. “Sometimes they think I’m from New Orleans, which thrills me to the bone.”

While Busch moved around Philly (South and West Philly, now Germantown) and Mae from N.J. to New Orleans and back again, Sarah Larsen was a Wisconsinborn, small town classical violinist who made her way to Philly six years ago by way of Connecticut and withbut-a-hint of discontent. “Nothing was harder—or more country—than getting out here, finding there are no jobs AND hurting myself in an accident where I wasn’t

sure if I’d ever be able to rotate my arms again,” says the high, honey-voiced Larsen. She walked dogs and waited tables until answering an ad on Craigslist looking for a fiddle player for old time band gigs, an event that led to other opportunities in local bluegrass sessions (e.g., recording sessions for albums by Ben Arnold and Mason Porter). It was bluegrass that pushed Larsen to consider her country past, of the one radio station in Wisconsin that was nothing but old time hillbilly music, of an uncle that gave her a Patsy Cline 8-track when she age 9. “That was the coolest thing I ever heard,” she says, quietly.

Larsen set about creating the sweet-as-pie Philly county lady trio Ladybird with Cecilia Ferneborg and Laura Szklarski, before hitting upon the catty, cool, authentic-sounding pedal steel-infused Hurricane Hoss, her smashing solo project which sounds Straight Outta Nashville.

What it’s like as a young person playing old music is akin to what it is like for a Philly woman playing country music. “When I first started playing country, I came in through bluegrass and met resistance from older folk who are based in tradition. As soon as I showed that I was humble and wanted to learn, people took a shine to me.”

Mention being a Philly country queen to Busch and she claims to not meditate much on the subject. “I’m more one who, when I’m not making music or making money to pay bills we all gots to pay, I’m trying to just dig on life in a big way. I meditate more on just being comfortable with my vision, no matter the age or trends of the time, and wish that for all the other lassies, for all the other “fillies.”

Larsen tells a cute story about one of her teaching gigs, where a bunch of little girls came up to her after the lesson, a tale that lends some insight into being a young woman in an old man’s world.

“They were playing with my fiddle and pedals and one girl said how beautiful I was because I had my makeup on and hair all done up,” she laughs. “I was glad they thought I was attractive but I wanted to make sure they loved the music—which they did—that what was more important; promoting a positive feeling amongst women, be they old or young. Yes, this scene is predominantly men, but I run with some great women here and am pleased as punch to have them in my life and in this scene. My motto is to not let old men intimidate you. Just throw an elbow. I wouldn’t be half the lady I am now if I didn’t make them make room.” n

Jerrie Johnson: Being the Change M

ost people are familiar with the famous quote “be the change that you want to see in the world,” from Gandhi, but it’s rare that you get to see someone put it into practice the way Jerrie Johnson has, every day, for the past four years. As a student at Penn State, and soon to be graduate student, Johnson’s ability to turn any hardship into art or activism is unparalleled. From her work with Project Cahir (pronounced “care”), to her dedication to producing shows that uplift black women, every platform is an opportunity for Johnson to give back to her community. As a model, actress and poet, art is a huge part of Johnson’s being. However, for her, art isn’t just something to be consumed, it’s also a catalyst for change. For Johnson, it’s simply not enough to notice where change needs to be made, it’s the steps taken to create that change that are important.

I got to speak with the recent Penn State graduate about art as activism, grad school auditions, and what it truly means to be a black artist in Philly.

Johnson’s commitment to civic engagement was born from her own experience with personal hardship.

As a freshman at Penn State, she learned that her family were victims of a house fire and though they were lucky enough to survive, their house did not. It was her struggle with poverty and homelessness on campus that later drew her to Project Cahir, a student-run organization committed to combating the effects of poverty on college campuses, while increasing civic engagement in the students. “When I was a freshman, I got a call that my house had burned down and that my family was homeless, so had I not been in college, I would’ve been homeless,” she says of the event. “There was a point in my freshman year where I was only eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, for probably a month and a half, sleeping in libraries and stuff like that because I lived way too far off campus.” Started by the family of Bill Cahir, a graduate of Penn State, journalist and Marine Corps reservist, who passed away in action in Afghanistan, Project Cahir and its sponsors allow eight students, called the Cahir Corps, to bring the issues they face to the table, and then create their own initiatives and strategies to fix them. One initiative, called the No Shame Campaign, was started by Johnson herself. “It’s… to alleviate the shame of being impoverished,” she says.

As a part of this campaign, Johnson and her fellow Cahir Corps hosted various sleep-ins at the college, meant to represent what a student dealing with homelessness might be experiencing, and to offer a safe space for students to share their own stories. “If a student is homeless, they’re not sleeping outside of a building, they’re sleeping in the buildings,” she says. “They’re sleeping in the library that’s 24 hours, the Hub is 24 hours, and they have really comfortable chairs. So we had a sleep in, and we had students tell their stories.” Her, and Project Cahir’s, hope is that if they bring enough attention to the issue, the college may see it as important enough to establish its own initiatives for ensuring that all of their students, especially those that may be dealing with poverty, can have a safe and rewarding experience.

An artist at heart, Johnson walked in several fashion shows, performed spoken word, and was a part of at least one mainstage show every year of her Penn State career. She noticed right away however, that there weren’t many roles at school for women of color. “When I first 12 | Philly Weekly | June 30 - July 6, 2016 | phillyweekly.com

came to this school, I felt like there wasn’t enough space for black women. I feel like black women are always borrowing space, if that makes sense, or being the extra in somebody else’s space,” she says. “Especially in theater, I see that a lot; I’ve always been in a mainstage show, but until [Penn State’s production of] Julius Caesar, because it was set in Africa, I was always somebody’s sister, or ‘the black girl’.” Instead of allowing this unfortunate reality to hold her back, she instead chose to produce a show that not only opened up a job for herself, but created a space for actresses of color where there wouldn’t have been one. Teaming up with the National Council of Negro Women, Johnson produced and directed a black box performance of the Ntozake Shange classic For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf, and opened the auditions to all women of color, even though the story itself is centered around black women. The motivation behind that, she says, was to create a realistic experience that women of color in the audience could relate to, regardless of background, because there simply aren’t enough. Her strategy paid off, the show sold out every day they performed it. “We have black box shows all the time, that was the first time ever, ever, that the black box was packed,” she says. “We literally had to turn people away, that’s how many people wanted to come.”

“I think that’s reflective of the kind of work I want to do in the future: to create those shows, or take part in those shows where it’s a realistic reflection,” she says.

She hopes to continue doing this kind of work during her

time at the American Conservatory Theater (ACT) in San Francisco, where she will be starting her MFA in Theater Arts in the fall. The audition for which, she says, almost didn’t happen; she decided to go on a whim when she found out last minute that her audition for UC San Diego had been moved from San Diego to San Francisco.

For Johnson, being a black artist is all about giving back. Having a platform to perform art comes with a responsibility to create art that is reflective of what’s happening around her. “Being an artist in Philly, not only are you experiencing directly the hurt and the pain, you want to create work that is that, and you have that in you while you’re creating work,” she says. “I have to get into my community, I have to figure out what it is that they want; and that’s a big thing too, having art that reflects the time, that’s a true reflection of the time.” Artists of color don’t have the luxury of ignoring the issues around them in their art, she says, because it directly affects them and those that are close to them. Even though it may be considered controversial, Johnson wants to continue to create work that starts a conversation, despite the fact that this may make it harder for her to be heard.

“My want to be an artist is bigger than my want to be hired, or my want to be in a big show. I don’t care to be in a huge show, especially if the show isn’t going to progress the people that I want to do shows for.” n

Ron Gallo Comes Home

R

on Gallo used to call Philly home, and for over a decade was a force on the local music scene—for several of those years as the frontman of Toy Soldiers. After a grand exit full of farewell performances, Gallo left us for the garage rock studios of Nashville. He returns to Philly this weekend to play Johnny Brenda’s while he continues his evolution from folk blues to fuzz punk. We chatted with Gallo over email to see how things have been going since he went south.

So, how has Nashville been treating you? Was there a hard adjustment period moving to a new city, especially one so steeped in a music scene or did you gel right in?

Nashville is great. I planned on being one of the resident weirdos down there, but it’s been extremely welcoming. There’s a really great garage/punk/rock and roll scene I am very drawn to. There was, of course, a period of internal crisis that any transition brings, but I enjoy that discomfort—good things happen there. But for the most part, it was a very natural transition. I had a ton of friends down there from touring over the years, so I wasn’t starting from scratch.

Anything you would do differently next time you relocate?

Bring nothing. Tell no one.

Let’s talk about Philadelphia. What did you miss most upon leaving?

By the time I left Philly, I was very ready to do so. With the exception of a few handfuls of people, friends, family, I am not missing too much yet.

Anything you’re dreading upon your return to your old hometown?

Being an accessory to people’s drinking. If this show doesn’t sell out, I’m never playing Philly again.

Tell us about Heavy Meta and RG3, when can we expect the full album to be released and what will listeners find on your current EP? Heavy Meta is looking like it will come out in early 2017, the release plan is in the works at the moment. But! RG3 is available now on my own label, American Diamond Recordings. Three songs from the full-length are on it.

Your bios mention dealing with some heavy issues, care to elaborate on how you’ve learned to cope with the struggles in your life?

I have learned the best way to cope with anything is to take it straight on, allow yourself to feel your pain, relish in it, take

responsibility, challenge yourself, question things. You can not run, you can not hide.

It’s not supposed to be easy, nothing good is. Turning inward is the hardest and most rewarding thing one can do.

The DNC is coming to Philly soon. What are your thoughts on everything going on politically right now? How are you feeling about the state of the world and does that influence your songwriting and shows?

Honestly, I don’t care about any of it for two reasons: 1. I think we, the people, are the problem. 2. Most people are not willing or able to do the work needed to know if anything we are being told is remotely true.

The government doesn’t control an individual’s choices to eat shitty food, listen to shitty music, treat other people like garbage, not dig deeper and not contribute positively to the world around them. I think those are some incredibly important things that no one outside of yourself has control over.

People are a lot more powerful than they are made to think by the “higher powers.” So rather than looking to the screen or wasting time getting “involved” in the mess out there, I think it’s a better use of time to look inside, get yourself right and try and spread that however you can big or small. Forget the rest.

Outside of a very small percentage in the grand scheme, everyone is ASLEEP, the very elaborate evil plan is working and everyone needs to WAKE UP and start making some constructive noise because we have abused our freedom and let ourselves get to the point of the McDonalds, Walmart, Ariana Grande, Kardashian can’t-think-for-myself mediocrity. GOOD SHIT SHOULD BE EASILY ACCESSIBLE AND AT THE TOP. IT WAS BEFORE, IT CAN BE AGAIN. But, certainly not at this rate. So yeah, whatever my little baby contribution against all that can be, I will go as far as I can to do it. n

I

heard chatter about Lush’s The Planets spa treatment and thought I had to check out what the fuss was all about.

Plus, it’s really not hard to convince me to go to the spa for three hours. Lush, from my experience was the place where my daughter and her teenage peers spent way too long ruminating over bath bombs and fizzies and a pretty place to take selfies. What I didn’t know was that Philly is actually only the second North American location to have a Lush spa facility. Upon entering for my Planets therapy, I was whisked off the showroom floor into a dimly lit English countrystyle cottage kitchen. My massage therapist, Tina greeted me with a glass of water and we sat and chatted at the farmhouse table about the inspiration for the therapy. “Mark Constantine [Lush co-founder] first felt the inspiration for the treatment when he was stargazing one evening and afterward listened to Gustav Holst’s classical piece, “The Planets.” That inspiration plays a lot into the treatment.” Obviously this wasn’t going to be your standard Swedish massage. No, this was a going to be a multi-sensory experience, which Tina described as the ultimate product demo for the sustainable beauty company that prides itself on using socially and environmentally responsible products that are fresh without preservatives; meaning this place treats the creams going on your face with the same care as a chef handles a delicate bisque.

After the intro, Tina asked me to select a card from what looked like a deck of tarot cards. I chose the card for “change” since I’ve been feeling influx lately. She said that she would select products specifically for that feeling and the associated planet in the solar system it linked to (for me, that was Mercury). This might sound a little new-agey to some, but I was eager to go on whatever trip Tina was offering. We traveled upstairs to the therapy room, once again quaintly decorated with subtle touches of English country.

Tina explained that The Planets consisted of three separate phases: a full body massage, a tea party and hand massage and

finally a facial—representing the past, present and future.

The 90-minute “past” massage seemed daunting. I’d never had a massage last that long and, if I so chose, I could talk out things weighing on my mind. I thought I would probably just clam up. But Tina sought out especially tense spots during my massage and with gentle prompting, got me to open up about work, family, money and love issues from my past and present—all the while, gently prodding my body to let go of these tensions. Ninety minutes concluded before I knew it, and I frankly didn’t want to shut up. But part of this therapy focuses on pinpointing stresses, addressing them, but then ultimately releasing them from yourself as well.

It was time to move on to, as Tina described it “a celebration of you.” Although I’m not one to shy away from self-indulgences, this next phase, the tea party and hand massaging, felt oddly foreign, a sure sign such self-reflection was long overdue. Tina performed a palm reading on me that I assumed would be as farfetched as those I’d gotten on the A.C. boardwalk. In actuality, it turned out to be more about introspection than future seeing. (Did you know our palm lines can change over time? I didn’t either.)

It was time for the final phase of The Planets: the facial, which uses a host of nearly a dozen different Lush products, all to inspire physical and emotional healing and rejuvenation. Between the trippy music, the heated massage bed and Tina’s magic hands I totally passed out at this point, waking myself with a startle from snoring. I can’t think of a better compliment for a massage therapist. I hadn’t checked my cell phone once throughout the time at Lush, a real feat for me, and I left feeling like I had done some long overdue mental and physical inventory that not only let me further get to know my issues, but take some action to relinquish them from by being as well. Yes, the Planets is quite the interstellar trip. n

s it a super douchey move to pretend to be a lesbian to avoid unwanted male attention? I’m a straight single woman in my mid-thirties and a very plausible lesbian in terms of sartorial stereotypes. Occasionally, a guy will hit on me in an awkward or creepy way and I’ll trot out a line about “not being into men.” Most recently, I used this pose when a courier broke down in my driveway and I invited him in for a glass of water while he waited for the tow truck. It was really uncomfortable and a little threatening when— after establishing that I lived alone—he asked me out. I guess I use this as an excuse so as not to hurt their feelings, but also to shut the conversation down as quickly as possible if I’m feeling vulnerable. Is this a harmless white lie, or a major cop-out that would offend actual lesbians? —Lady’s Entirely Zany Identity Enquiry

“I’m not offended by this,” said someone I thought was an actual lesbian. I shared your question with this person—a woman I thought was an actual lesbian—because I wasn’t offended by it either, but wanted to check with an actual lesbian just to be safe.

Turns out my friend doesn’t identify as a lesbian, but as a woman-who-loves-women-but-does-not-identify-as-a-lesbianbecause-she-sometimes-finds-the-odddude-hot.

“But even though I’m not offended by it, I have to say I’ve found the ‘I’m into women’ line to be totally ineffective,” said my not-alesbian friend. “The creeps I’ve used it on get even more riled up after hearing that line. Sometimes I check out and start ignoring these creeps as if they’re wallpaper, but that can rile them up too. Same with a polite ‘I’m not interested.’ The only success I’ve had with warding off creeps is by actually yelling at them, asking them if they’d like to be treated the way they’re treating me, and if their mothers, sisters, et cetera, would appreciate that treatment.”

My not-a-lesbian friend—who, as it turns out, identifies more strongly with the term “bisexual”—has also had some luck with the lose-your-shit strategy (e.g., screaming, yelling, and waving your arms around like a crazy person).

“You kind of have to treat these people like bears at a campsite,” said my not-a-lesbian friend. “You have to make yourself big and loud and scary so they don’t get closer.

Because they will get closer.”

I have a difficult question. A dear young friend has recently started being a stripper for work. I won’t lie: it tears me up. All I feel is sadness and worry—such a nice soul for what I feel is a not-so-nice environment.

I really hope I’m wrong. Is there any way in which this can be okay? My thoughts are that

no matter how strong a woman is, no one can forget what they see or have to deal with. I worry for the sake of a nice person getting her ass handed to her too often and potentially breaking beyond repair. My gut emotion is that it doesn’t matter how well you handle these situations—what matters is the fact that you see too much ugliness, too often, and get to a point where you forget that there are actually nice humans out there. I guess my question is: How well can anyone handle this? —My Endangered Lady I suspect she’s handling it better than you are, MEL. And I would recommend minding your own business, backing the fuck off, and Googling “white knight syndrome.”

But if your conscience requires you to say something, say something that opens up a conversation, rather than something so larded with shame, fear, and judgment that it shuts the conversation down. Instead of saying something like “Oh my God! What were you thinking?! You’ll be shredded emotionally and sexually! You could break beyond repair!”, try something like, “Stripping isn’t something I would feel comfortable doing myself. But I’m your friend, and if you need to talk with someone about your new job—if you need to decompress or vent— I’m here for you.”

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved wearing women’s lingerie. It turns me on, but it also makes me feel comfortable.
