Behind the Pop-Up What it takes to bring one temporary beer garden to life.

I

t’s pop-up garden time all around Philly. One of the most hotly anticipated openings are the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s (PHS) Pop-Up Gardens. And with good reason. They usually include copious quantities of beer, cocktails, and snacks amongst lush settings generally reserved for vacation snapshots. While sipping on a frozen daiquiri at the PHS pop up on South and 15th, you may find yourself asking, “How did they get this garden to come to life in a vacant lot?” I know I did. So I turned to PHS Creative Design Director Seth Pearsoll for help. He worked closely with the designing and building of this location and was able to give a glimpse at what it takes to get the party started. “It is a reference to last year, it’s not totally new, but on the other hand it is very different because there are whole new things that didn’t exist last year.” Pearsoll explains about the PHS garden returning to the South Street location where its been for three years now. “We went back there because it’s such a popular location, it’s really good for that community, people have started to welcome us there.” He says that PHS always reviews a location and that productivity and profitability, along with the benefits to the surrounding community are key to a garden’s chances of being a repeat destination for another year. Using those factors, South Street made the cut again this year. Partnering with Karen Regan of Tallulah & Bird Interior Design and her husband Jeff Regan of Regan Construction, Pearsoll says the pop-up efficiently came together. “Karen is a great stylist and Jeff is a great builder and we took the lessons from last year and re-adapted the site to make it a little more functional, a little more effective, really beef up some areas.” One of those changes was eliminating the food trucks from the back area, allowing them to move the cabanas to the back to give, as Pearsoll describes it, “More formal seating with more personality.” Adding in additional spots with coverage from inclement weather is evident in the covered seating area that also works as a stage and performance space. “It really gives us a versatile seating and hosting space.” There’s also a new bar on the northwest side that will be offering upscale botanical cocktails and wine, allowing the smaller bar to be used for food prep. “In terms of line

management and space planning, you have your beverage in one area and your food in another, so it sort of breaks up the crowd a little bit,” adds Pearsoll. Although they weren’t starting from scratch with this garden, PHS still had to assess all the existing elements. Once the process of refurbishing was complete, new construction began, about

14 | Philly Weekly | June 9 - 15, 2016 | phillyweekly.com

four weeks ahead of the June 1 opening. Pearsoll said that the design idea changed several times, and at three weeks out they were amending the existing bar, framing out the covered patio and working their way from one structure to the next. “The front bar, the new bar, we started that about two weeks ago, and that came together really quickly. We

had some iron columns that we literally finished just hours before we opened. They were so heavy, much heavier than we thought. So we just wanted to be safe and make sure we had all the right people to prop it up and secure it.” PHS hopes to make the South Street location a semi-permanent spot. Pearsoll says the owner of the space, Kenny Gamble, has always been supportive and a “great partner” to PHS. “I think our hope is that it can stay permanent. We built it structurally sound. We think it’s a great asset to the community. And people generally really, really like that location so I think everyone would like to see it stay for the foreseeable future.” As far as the actual flora of the garden, Pearsoll says that despite the soil challenges present in any reclaimed urban lot, following Karen’s lead, the team’s goal was to create a lush, romantic vibe. You’ll find climbing roses, Knockout roses, Cafe au Lait Dinner Plate Dahlias, and gobs of hydrangea. “Edibles and herbs reference the botanical cocktails we’ll be highlighting, along with plantings of hops, sages, and basil varieties,” adds Pearsoll. Fig and kiwi trees and grapevines round out the selections. “The gardens are going to be incredible. They’re so rich, they’re so layered. It’s a place where you can go and forget you’re in the city unless you look at the beautiful skyline. I think it’s a good showcase for the Horticultural Society.” PHS’s other pop-up garden this year has a totally different feel. The Garden at the Viaduct Rail Park at 10th and Hamilton Streets showcase the elevated rail line and the natural floral already present there. “The team worked really hard to do a nice plant inventory,” explains Pearsoll. “They picked a lot of these natives, a lot of these emergent plantings, that might not be in a formal garden but sort of this new wave perennial style. If you’ve ever been to the rail line, you know that plant palette is not like roses and hydrangeas. Paulownia trees are considered like a weed tree and they kept them and limbed them in a really great way. You know, it’s not a formal garden where a formal garden doesn’t make sense.” n

PW AGENT OF THE WEEK: Lauren Acker Kratz I have been with the McCann Team since 2002. I am a lifelong Center City resident and current resident of the Art Museum area. I love Philadelphia and its varied and exciting neighborhoods. I enjoy helping buyers find the perfect home and helping sellers to effectively market their homes for great results. I work hard to provide my clients with timely information, open communication, and the tools they need to make informed decisions. I am dedicated to the needs of my clients and enjoy providing a successful and smooth transaction. "Lauren is wonderful as both a buyers agent and a sellers agent, I've been lucky enough to work with her in both capacities. She is helpful, quick to respond, and has a great knowledge of the city market. Lauren went out of her way to help me clear out last minute items on our settlement day so things could proceed as planned on time. I'm going to miss working with Lauren now that I'm (for the time being!) moving out of the city." – Fairmount Home Seller 2016 P: 215.440.2097 | M: 267.977.0363 | F: 215.627.8106 E: lacker@mccannteam.com PW R E A L
