FROM THE EDITOR
A little much, GQ KERITH GABRIEL
C
olin Kaepernick has once again made headlines (and covers) for his silent protests. The latest after gracing the cover of GQ for December as its Citizen of the Year. It’s a bestow that has again shaken the social sphere to its core as the divides of black and white, liberal and conservative have taken to various platforms to weigh in. It was a bold move by a magazine known more for its suggestions of what to wear, than whom to appreciate, but if you read the article – one that was well-written, and coming from a multitude of notable inuencers – you ďŹ nd that the focus is on Kaepernick being the modern-day Muhammad Ali or Tommie Smith, taking a stand (or in this case a knee) to raise awareness of the overt racial injustice that plagues our country. It’s not what was written about the former NFL quarterback that sticks out but how he’s depicted on the cover and inside photos dressed like a modern-day Black Panther. Considering the only correlation between Kaepernick and guys like Bobby Seale and Huey Newton is that they were both black and both activists. GQ had to have known that portraying Kaepernick in that manner on its cover would ďŹ re up already seething racial overtones, toward both Kaepernick, and again shed light on increased hostilities between black and white. But it’s hard to blame them, it comes down to bottom line, and that bottom line for any print publication is sales. It’s a hard truth for anyone in this business, and believe me, a publication like ours isn’t exempt. But there is a line between selling a few ex-
3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20
tra copies and having a little bit of integrity. And also doing your homework. The Black Panthers pushed Marxist ideology and advocated for African-Americans to arm themselves and use violence in the face of police brutality. The group also supported draft dodging and reparations. They were an outspoken, brash group that served an intended purpose for a time period in which people of color weren’t only second-class citizens, but they were treated no better than livestock and spoke out in the face of brutality. Kaepernick isn’t doing any of that. In fact his silent stand is the exact opposite, his cause humble in its nobility, and it’s that silent stance that has spoken louder than anything that has ever come out of his mouth. Yet, here he is in the December issue, dressed in all black looking like he’s ready for war. It just feels like no one within the GQ ofďŹ ces thought this one through. It’s almost as if the conversation in the conference room in advance of this issue went something like this: Editor: “How can we make him look as much as an advocate for blacks as possible?â€? Stylist: “I know, let’s dress him like a 60’s militant, ask him to take his braids out, wear his hair in an Afro and look like he’s ready for war.â€? Executive: “Should he raise his ďŹ st?â€? Stylist: “Nah, that’s a little much, don’t you think?â€? Executive: “Yeah, you’re probably right.â€? We live in a racist country and we need more people like Kaepernick to use their inuence to call it injustice and advocate for change, so as a Black man I can appreciate GQ’s efforts in shining a light on the movement Kaepernick’s stand has made. But it’s a fact that Kap’s ďŹ ght and that of the Black Panther movement aren’t on the same wavelength. I’m just saying if it’s going to be done, it would be helpful to get your facts straight. Q

HOLIDAYS: BY THE NUMBERS The folks at WalletHub crunched the numbers and when it comes to the holiday season, it looks like you’ll have plenty to play with to spread cheer this year. According the personal-ďŹ nance site, the average Philadelphian will spend $508 on holiday shopping this year. That number came from a breakdown of a consumer proďŹ le of Philadelphians, which found with an average monthly income of $3,454 and only $2,873 on monthly expenses, the average shopper age of 34.1 with a debt-to-income ratio of just 44.2 percent has more than enough to by a few gifts for that special someone. To put it gently, the old SEPTA app was not your most reliable friend after a brutal day at work. But officials say the new app, now available for download, makes it easier to check schedules and find service information. They’re also rolling out a “Real Time Vehicle Locator technology, which will provide location updates every 30 seconds. And the TrainView tool now offers an interactive way to track when your train will arrive in real time. FEATURE single for this record instead.
What do you mean by do something big for “Special?â€? Would you have put the song on another album? Maybe so. It didn’t really ďŹ t the material of My Woman, and neither does “Fly.â€? I mean, “Flyâ€? could’ve ďŹ t it, if I made it. But adding “Flyâ€? to the album made the record go over one minute of what you’re supposed to put on a record to make it sound good. The timing was kind of hard to ďŹ gure out. People were like, “Why did you choose to do all the songs on one side and these slower ones on the other?â€? Part of it was aesthetic, and part of it was timing. Adding those two songs to My Woman would have made it a double LP. So Phases is really just a mix of stuff that kind of got left out of those records. And it still reects them in a big way, production-wise.
When working on these songs over the course of your career, how do you know when a song is done for you? What is that process like?

Voice of an Angel
Singer-songwriter Angel Olsen explains life’s Phases in this intimate interview SARAH ROSE ETTER
S
o much of life is yearning. I’ve been in Philadelphia for nine years now, and sometimes the longing blooms in my chest. I picture another life, in a different place: In a shack on a mountain, in the arms of a man who never loved me, belly swollen with child. That yearning gets stronger when I hear Angel Olsen. Her voice is the sound of that feeling: The strange daydream of another life, the
129(0%(5
tightening of the chest, the untenable feeling of loss when I blink my eyes and realize I am still where I was before: Standing outside of Starbucks on South Broad Street, surrounded by students from the University of the Arts, and nothing has changed. Olsen’s newest release, Phases, offers up rarities and covers that trade in that same yearning. The rarities are captured from earlier recording sessions of her poignant hit album My Woman and the rawer Burn Your Fire For No Witness. She thrums through the rapid strumming sadness of “Sans, then deftly turns to cover Bruce Springsteen’s “Tougher Than The Rest with the velvet melancholy of a woman trapped her in bedroom on a Saturday night while her beloved is out on the town with another woman. It isn’t often that a voice comes along that can drive right through your ribs. Olsen is that voice – and ahead of her upcoming two-night stand at Union Transfer (Dec. 12-13), I spoke
with her via phone about Phases, songwriting, and self-analysis during interviews like this one.
How did you decide what to include on Phases? How did you approach the choice of the covers and how you wanted to reimagine those? Well, I’ve been touring extensively for My Woman. I’ve been playing the covers and some of the other songs live. I honestly didn’t know I was going to come out with another record in the middle of this, but I had all of these demos that were a good group of songs from different eras. I chose some songs that had gotten lost under records. “Special and “Fly on the Wall were supposed to be on a record together, actually, but then I ended up releasing “Fly for the compilation Our First Hundred Days. I always wanted to do something big for “Special, but then we decided to release it as a
With a song like “Sans,â€? I really wasn’t sure if it was ďŹ nished, because it’s so simple, you know? It’s a song that repeats a lot. And I hardly ever do that – I don’t really like to repeat choruses. So I just sort of sat with that, then forgot about the song. Four months later, I listened to it and thought, “Oh, this is ďŹ nished! This is a song.â€? Then I played it a few times live and it felt good. It felt like a ďŹ nished thought. But at the same time, some songs never feel ďŹ nished. I never felt like “unfucktheworldâ€? was ďŹ nished.
Your songs always feel so complete to me. Why does that song feel unfinished to you? Well, “unfucktheworldâ€? is a solo song. It just feels unďŹ nished because there isn’t a lot behind it. It’s just me. The last part of the song just feels like it should have some sort of grand ďŹ nale. But there’s not a grand ďŹ nale. I’m always confused as to why people like the song. When I play it I’m like, “Are you sure? Because I don’t know if it’s ďŹ nished!â€? I always felt like “unfucktheworldâ€? and “Fliesâ€? were supposed to be together [on an album], but they just didn’t end up that way.
In terms of your songwriting, I’ve always really admired your lyrics. What inspires you when it comes to lyrics? What’s that process like for you? I deďŹ nitely take inspiration from my life. I write about things I’ve realized and things that I’ve learned, but I deďŹ nitely exaggerate certain emotions.
How so? If something really disappoints me, I really
3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20
go to the extreme with it in writing. Then I have to decide how much I want to put into that. So some songs start off really intensely, and then end up becoming more subtle, you know? That is my process. The songs and lyrics start off really raw. I’ll try them in three or four different styles, and then the ďŹ gure out which style ďŹ ts the content the most. For Phases, “How Many Disastersâ€? was a louder song, and now it’s this short and sweet little folk song. The writing process is just weird. Sometimes I write something and think, “That’s just the way I want it to sound.â€? For songs like “Not Gonna Kill Youâ€? and “Shut Up Kiss Me,â€? I had already envisioned what they were going to sound like.
a business, and then have to like protect it, and keep it from losing its roots. It’s all work. Everything that you do is work, even if you’re doing it on your own it’s still work. And it’s difďŹ cult to describe to people that though it’s a privilege, it’s still a lot of work. And that there’s so much of it that isn’t music and that isn’t the writing that I really don’t like.
Do you mean the capitalist part of it? I don’t know. You gotta make ends meet at the same time. Yeah, it’s capitalism to a point, but then when you keep hiring people to be in your band, you’re like “Well, I am just making it work. I’m making it happen.
Well, with something like Phases, right, that’ s kind of a balance because it’s like It’s interesting how those songs come to something that you said you haven’t exyou - some very clearly, and some shapeshifting. So you’ve been touring pretty ex- pected to release, and then you need to tensively, but you’ve had a few weeks off. find a way to do so with like, integrity, or something that feels like it’s true to you, How is the break going? I’ve been hanging out with the cats. We’re right? bird watching together every day.
Ha! So you’re in Asheville, North Carolina, right? At home? I am, yeah. It’s really pretty here. The leaves are changing. We call it Leaf Season because the tourists come through. They’re taking up all the parking spaces downtown, but it’s pretty.
With Phases, “California and “Sweet Dreams were recorded a long time ago, and it’s a very different production style. I like the songs. They’re songs from my past. They bring back memories of Chicago, but I wouldn’t record them the same way now. It’s interesting with Phases because part of me feels like I am revealing something very personal to people by reintroducing them to these songs. For new fans, who only know My Woman, now they’re hearing all of these different phases of my career. And it’s scary. I don’t necessarily love every single production of every song. I think there were better versions, but it’s a window into all the changes that happened up until My Woman.
Yeah, we’ve started getting those Segway tours through my neighborhood in South Philadelphia. Forty people on damn Segways. Drives me nuts. Anyway, it sounds like you’re getting a nice break. I know you’ve mentioned breaks are important for It’s kind of a great way to introduce them to everything you’ve done before, though. your process. You know, I think my brain is always making art. When I’m on tour, I’m on tour. And I’m doing all these things, and talking about myself, and my face! My face is everywhere. And then I go home. And if I’m home for two or three months, I ďŹ nally get to reect on the beginning of that year. I can only allow myself so much reection during the day. You can’t think about your whole life all day or you’ll just get depressed. It’s just not worth it to think about your whole life all day. But I do reect during my breaks. I just like to come home and go to the grocery store and do all the normal shit. I just clean up my house. And I don’t like to leave my house and I don’t like people here that often. I actually don’t get energy from being around people, so being on tour this much sucks a lot. But I also enjoy it at the same time, because I get to do what I love. I get to be my own boss, at least for this time in my life. It sucks sometimes to turn your art into

Any time I do an interview talking about this stuff, I’m always like psychoanalyzing myself afterwards. I’d hate for anyone to think “Man she really knows about herself. She must be really thinking about how selfabsorbed she is. But I have to think about it from an outside perspective. I do things with intent. I think that that matters, and saying so matters. I don’t sit around all day thinking about this stuff. It just occurs to me during interviews, and then I want to be earnest. But, you know, I also cringe at the thought of reading it. Q

Joe Bonamassa and his soulful sound will headline the Academy of Music stage on Nov. 18.

ver since he departed the tepid throes of major label-dom, Joe Bonamassa has been doing his own thing – his own way. It’s a lesson learned from the 1994 supergroup Bloodline, which featured Bonamassa alongside music icons Waylon Krieger (Robby Krieger’s son), Erin Davis (Miles Davis’ kid), and Berry Oakley, Jr. (son of the late Allman Brothers bassist) Well that, and the pitfalls of not being able to call one’s own shots. “Nah, that didn’t steer me away from anybody, says Bonamassa from Pasadena when asked about working with Jason Bonham (yes, the son of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham) for his new band, Black Country Communion. “I just learned early on that it’s best to make your own in-roads and run your own ship. That ship makes a huge stop at Philadelphia’s Academy of Music on Nov. 18. The gig, booked by Bonamassa, will sell self-released albums and videos from at his merchandise stand – like his recent studio

Blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa is doing things his way – all by himself album, Blues of Desperation, and his post-jazz ensemble Rock Candy Funk Party’s new album, The Groove Cubed. If there’s time, the guitarist may very probably cater his own backstage. “I had to be a good businessman,â€? says Bonamassa, 40, who was already playing opening sets for B.B. King at age 8, and by age 12, gigging around upstate New York. His dad was an entrepreneur in the music scene, so young Bonamassa knew the pros and cons of the biz quite well. “The thing is, people always seem to forget about the second word in the phrase ‘music business’ is business. It is great to have all the grand ideas of doing this and bringing that, but how do you pay for it all? How do you generate income when and in a period of time when music has been relegated to...free. If you give it away once, they never come back to pay – it’s the ultimate free sample. Give someone a sample of Eggo wafes and they’ll always expect it gratis for life.â€? Very soundly, as Bonamassa, since the 2000’s, has been wowing
blues purists and blues rock aďŹ cionados with his insistently warm and vibrant signature solos and a deeply rhythmic and sexy swagger. Yet, it is not a grand advertising scheme or major label push that has led listeners to his doorstep or his website, an active hub which runs its own mini-TV-network and sells a dozen-plus studio albums, an equal number of live albums and DVDs, and host of fun products with even-more-fun promotions. Plus, it is an active Twitter feed and Facebook – 3 million Facebook followers and counting – with silly things such as a “new reality seriesâ€? called “Great Guitars I Have Overplayed Onâ€? that makes him endearing to passionate fan and newfangled listener alike. At the Maximize Social Business website, manager Wiseman is quoted as saying that “today, we (J&R Adventures) are a real record company, able to take advantage of all the new social platforms because we have become a vertically integrated company. These special promotions and social platforms allow us to connect directly with the fan base and increasing attention around the artist. To offer quality promotions and freebies, also help to continually increase our basic emails. Keeping personal contact with the fan base is essential today to develop and maintain a successful artist while the record industry is in a period of constant changes.â€? Talking about his love of British blues greats and the scene in Europe that took to Bonamassa like a dog to a juicy bone, the guitarist espouses the value of a global reach without necessarily commenting on his social media effect. “If there’s a movement over there, it is because of the internet where it is global before it’s global if you know what I mean. When I was there 15 years ago for the ďŹ rst time, there was already a following there to see me. At ďŹ rst, I didn’t know how they knew my albums? They found them through primitive internet shit. That’s the beauty of the internet. The not so beautiful element of the internet is how everyone has an opinion and they pride themselves on how reckless and mean they can get. It’s a free for all, then the ensuing pile on.â€? Beyond all the talk of social mediation and fan interaction, there is the music – the blues – plain and simple. “I’m not the type of guy who wants to make something that sounds purist, as if it was recorded in 1929,â€? says Bonamassa. “I’m not interested in that. You go down that rabbit hole and after awhile, you should just put a Robert Johnson record on – you are not pushing it any further. I have to push it further every time, I do it, or else, why bother?â€? Q Joe Bonamassa | Nov. 18. 8pm. $156. The role of the Asian actor is changing. And it’s Asian filmmakers out there swaying notions.
Celebrate the past, change the future BY TIMAREE SCHMIT
R
epresentations of the sexuality of Asian people in ďŹ lm have been, at best, limited. There are tropes of Asian women as subservient sex workers and Asian men as emasculated and comically inexperienced. More often, though, Asian characters are entirely absent from movies. While Asians make up 5.4 percent of the US population, more than half of movies, TV and streaming shows have no Asian characters at all. When the opportunity arises to hire performers for cartoons, ďŹ lms like Sony’s Aloha opted for white actress Emma Stone to play quarter Chinese, quarter Native Hawaiian character Allison Ng. Meanwhile live action adaptations of cartoons and manga have consistently had whitewashed casting, such as in the recent Ghost in the Shell, Death Note and Doctor Strange. African-Americans have won some increased visibility in American media and are

more empowered to express concern about racist depictions, but the use of Asians as punchlines results in far less public outcry. But thanks to the work of more and more talented Asian creators, things are slowly starting to change. Enter the annual Philadelphia Asian-American Film Festival, celebrating its 10th season and running through Nov. 19. One “big theme in the 2017 program is to celebrate the past with the hopes of changing the future,â€? says festival director Rob Buscher, who has been responsible for programming for the past ďŹ ve years. “As a biracial Japanese-American whose family was directly impacted by the antiJapanese sentiment in WWII, the JapaneseAmerican showcase holds deeply personal meaning,â€? Buscher says, adding that the current political climate is increasingly hostile “towards non-whites and people perceived to be immigrantsâ€? and that projects like the PAAFF hope to counteract this. More than 300 ďŹ lms were submitted for en-
try to the festival and the programming committee curated that list down to the 80 that will be showcased. In addition to Narrative and Documentary feature length ďŹ lms, there’s a special theme to this year’s selected Short Films program: depictions of sexuality. “Given the surprisingly high number of ďŹ lms dealing with sex and sexuality that were submitted this year, Sex Sells seemed like a good ďŹ t,â€? Buscher says. “We are excited to show a grouping of ďŹ lms that cover a variety of sexual orientations and subjects ranging from a couple experimenting with bisexuality, gay male prostitution and sex addiction, the sex trade in the Philippines, and female empowerment through exotic dancing.â€? Among the shorts selected for the Sex Sells programming are a 9-minute story called Cake, about a bisexual woman ordering a sex robot, I am Jupiter: a silent thriller set in post-colonial Philippines and Please Hold, a surprising tale which takes place after a condom breaks. In discussing the issue of how Asian sexu-
ality is depicted in ďŹ lm, Buscher reiterates the extremely limited representations and discusses how they are linked to a history that has linked war and prostitution. “From the colonization of the Philippines in 1898 to the post-WWII occupation of Japan and subsequent conict in Korea and Vietnam, there is a long history of American military presence in the region that continues today with bases in South Korea, Japan, and several PaciďŹ c Islands,â€? he says, adding, “In all cases this has invariably led to prostitution, when many local women are forced into this industry by ďŹ nancial circumstance. Popular media continues to propagate the image of Asian women as sex workers, which then negatively impacts American women of Asian descent who become associated with this stereotype.â€? He notes that with notable exceptions like Bruce Lee, Hollywood continues to give Asian men diminutive and tokenizing roles. “Many of the desexualized portrayals stem from a historical fear of interracial mixing,â€? Buscher explains, “There was actually a time [during the span of the 1910s and 1920s] when many white women in California began dating Filipino men who were considered to be better dressers and dancers than their white counterparts. This soon led to a harsher anti-miscegenation law and legislation that further restricted the immigration of Filipinos.â€? There’s precedent for Asian men as sex symbols, though, Buscher says, pointing to Sessue Hayakawa, a Japanese immigrant who rose to stardom in the early 20th century. Buscher says, Hayakawa “became Hollywood’s ďŹ rst male sex symbol after sharing the ďŹ rst interracial kiss on screen with a white woman in Cecil B. DeMille’s 1915 ďŹ lm The Cheat. For much of his career afterwards Hayakawa was typecast into the role of the hot tempered and dangerous foreign lover, a trope that Rudolph Valentino would later become famous for in the 1920s.â€? Hayakawa’s work can be seen at this year’s PAAFF, in the 1919 silent ďŹ lm The Dragon Painter. Not only did Hayakawa star in it, alongside his wife Tsuru Aoki, his production company created it. “The ďŹ lm was intended to counter the Orientalist stereotypes of that era by providing what Hayakawa considered to be an authentic representation of his culture,â€? Buscher says, noting Hayakawa’s Haworth Picture Company continues to be the only Hollywood studio owned by an Asian American. But maybe that soon can change too. The enigma that was legendary actress Hedy Lamarr was the highlight discussion of this year’s Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival.
Brains over beauty ‘Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story’highlight so far of this year’s PJFF BY ANDREA CANTOR “Was she a scandal? Was she an inventor? Was she the most beautiful woman in the world...Was she a recluse? Was she a train wreck? Was she the most brilliant person who ever lived?â€? These were recent questions posed by journalist and documentarian Alexandra Dean to a sold-out crowd at the Gershman Y during the Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival. The she in question is Hedy Lamarr, the 1930s and 40s Hollywood glamour girl. Determined to comprehend this multifaceted and misunderstood woman, Dean directed the documentary “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story.â€? Among the many awards and accolades the ďŹ lm has received, “Bombshellâ€? currently has a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Set to ofďŹ cially release on Nov. 24, the ďŹ lm was screened at Tribeca Film Festival as well as other festivals. Most recently, PJFF showcased “Bombshellâ€? as its centerpiece ďŹ lm to around 750 viewers on Nov. 11. Film buffs know Lamarr from movies, such as “Algiers,â€? “Samson and Delilah,â€? and “Ziegfeld Girl.â€? But it was when she simulated an orgasm in “Ecstasy,â€? a 1933 Czech-Austrian drama, that she created a name for herself – and a black mark

on the rest of her career. The 2017 documentary brings up news clippings and reports of the Pope’s denunciation of the movie for its racy nature as well as Adolf Hitler’s condemnation of the movie, since the lead actress was Jewish. Even with Hitler’s open declaration, most did not know that Lamarr, born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler, was Jewish. As one of Louis B. Mayer’s girls, the MGM ďŹ lm mogul changed her name after she ed Austria-Hungary, and the actress hid her true identity for the rest of her life. Her children, who are featured in the ďŹ lm were shocked to learn their mother’s true heritage. Filmmaker Mel Brooks and actress Diane Kruger also make appearances in the ďŹ lm that was produced by famed actress Susan Sarandon. When asked about highlighting Lamarr’s long-hidden secret, Dean told PW that it is impossible to know what the deceased actress would have thought. “But her children embraced it, which I think says a lot. Her children watched the ďŹ lm with me at Tribeca, and they wept the whole time, holding my arms at each side,â€? added Dean. “[They] didn’t understand her, they couldn’t understand her because she had been so private and had amputated so many parts of herself... but now they ďŹ nally got her and understood her. That to me was the greatest message, that they had understood her was
enough.â€? The predominantly Jewish audience at Saturday night’s festival was also able to understand the complex and discreet ďŹ gure. “I mean, is it important for all of the ďŹ lms within a Jewish Film Festival to have a very prominent Jewish ďŹ gure, someone that their identity was made up by their Jewishness or by their culture or whether they were religious?â€? challenged PJFF director Olivia Antsis as to why Lamarr’s story was incorporated into the festival. “Or is it important for us to recognize people who were Jewish, who have a lot of other important aspects of their lives that need to be shared with the world, including a Jewish audience.â€? Another part of Lamarr’s life that was unknown to the public, albeit not by her own volition, was her inventions. Central to the ďŹ lm’s narrative, Lamar came up with the concept of “frequency hopping,â€? which is used in military weaponry and is the cornerstone behind Bluetooth, GPS, and WiFi technology. But as a beautiful female, sex symbol, and immigrant, Lamarr was continuously pegged as stupid. The United States conďŹ scated Lamarr’s patent under the pretense that she was an “enemy alien.â€? Subsequently, the invention was put to use without her knowledge, and many skeptics questioned if she had not stolen the ideas. According to the ďŹ lm, Lamarr continuously tried to be taken seriously as an inventive mind, even hiring ghostwriters for a tell-all autobiography. The book, as with her life, all boiled down to beauty and scandal, and her true voice was never heard. Tormented by several bad marriages, shoplifting scandals, an addiction to methamphetamines caused by the infamous Dr. Feelgood, public scrutiny, and excessive plastic surgery, Lamarr became a recluse. As luck would have it, Lamarr’s patent problems caught the attention of journalist Fleming Meeks who was doing a piece on the matter for Forbes in 1990. While he struggled to get what he needed from the actress for his article, captivated, he spent hours listening and recording her story – the tapes which would years later be discovered by Dean and used as the ďŹ lm’s narration. “It did take a little while to get her to talk about what I needed, but in fact I was talking to Hedy Lamarr,â€? explained Meeks in a Q&A after the screening. “Why would I want to get my seven quotes, and say goodbye, right? And she just told me her whole story. I just listened. That was all it took.â€? Dean was partly inspired to take on Lamarr’s story after a series on inventors for Bloomberg television and Business Week, where the journalist uncovered sexism in Silicon Valley. As the movie makes its way to the theaters in the wake of Harvey Weinstein and other sexual misconduct in the movie industry, Dean looks “at the documentary in a new light.â€? “I actually look back at it and I think, ‘Oh God, maybe I should have gone a little bit deeper into the Louie B. Mayer stuff.’ I have letters of hers where she is basically weeping to her mother about these Hollywood pigs. You can only imagine what that means, you can ďŹ ll in the blanks,â€? relayed Dean. “It was exactly the same, in some ways, as what we are seeing coming out of Hollywood right now. So I don’t think any of it is new, and that is what is useful about watching this ďŹ lm now is to get the sense that it’s been going on a long time and it’s part of the system.â€? Aside from could have, would have, should haves, the documentary qualiďŹ ed for the Oscars and Dean hopes it makes the shortlist. Yet, her proudest accomplishment of the ďŹ lm is ďŹ nding the Meeks’ tapes: “We found her voice, and we love that she tells the story in her own voice. We think it is about time.â€? COURTESY PAAFF
Audiences prepare for another year of great films and discussion at the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival, which opens Nov. 9.
on the life of A reporter Reflection Roy Halladay by one remembers who covered him closely BY ED CONDRAN
R
oy Halladay was like Greta Garbo. The Phillies late ace wanted to be alone. It was the gut wrenching way in which he left behind a wife and two children after his plane crashed into the Gulf of Mexico last week. It was the way the man – affectionately known to all as “Doc, – sat next to the player’s lounge, a sanctuary from the media at the farthest end of the Phillies clubhouse during his days in South Philadelphia. I covered Halladay’s four seasons as a Phillies beat writer. The transcendent hurler spoke after games and only on rare occasions otherwise. When chatting with Bert Blyleven while conducting an interview for a Playboy Magazine feature in 2011, the
Hall of Fame hurler expressed his admiration for Halladay. “Halladay is not just an exceptional pitcher but he’s part of a dying breed,â€? Blyleven said. “He ďŹ nishes what he starts.â€? Blyleven completed an incomprehensible 242 games. Halliday ďŹ nished 67 games he started, an impressive number for a contemporary hurler. Blyleven, a hilarious prankster, asked what Halladay was like in the clubhouse. Well, I’ll tell you. No Phillies player went about their business quite like Halladay. The closest was Chase Utley, who resided in his fortress of solitude during his glorious run sporting red pinstripes. Halladay was not only quiet, he was intense. His workouts? Endless. When Halladay made his Phillies debut during a spring training game in
129(0%(5
2010 against the Yankees in Clearwater, he pitched two clean innings and exited the game. Phillies beat writers thought Halladay would be like every other pitcher and speak about 30 minutes after he left the mound. However, Halladay surprised the media. He worked out after he pitched. Just over an hour after he left the mound, Doc jogged over to his locker with a surprised look on his stubbled face. “Oh, you guys are here, I’ll be back in a few minutes.â€? A few minutes turned into 30 as Halladay continued his physical battle. Halladay ďŹ nally spoke with the press in the ninth inning. Halladay’s work ethic and ability to focus made him into the greatest starter of the ďŹ rst decade of this century. Much like his pal, Cliff Lee, Halladay attacked hitters. It didn’t matter if it was an 0-2
count, Doc went after the opponent, which was refreshing since so many pitchers are nibblers. Halladay threw a perfect game during a regular season contest in Miami versus the Marlins but his ďŹ nest hour was when he posted the second no-hit game in postseason history. Doc was absolutely dominant against the Cincinnati Reds in game one of the 2010 NLDS. Citizens Bank Park roared with every strike after six no-hit innings. Halladay was way too much for the Reds. If it weren’t for a 3-2 pitch that appeared to hit the corner that was called a ball against Jay Bruce in the ďŹ fth inning, Halladay might have pitched a perfect game. He settled for the nohitter. It’s only the second postseason no-no in history. During the press conference I asked Doc about how special it felt to make history. His response was similar to the cyborg from ‘The Terminator.’“It was nice but we still have to win two more games to win the series.â€? There was barely a trace of joy from Halladay. Shortly thereafter, I watched as Halladay waltzed past a bottle of Dom Perignon, which was placed by his locker. He glanced at the beverage, which symbolizes celebration, and walked into the players lounge. Halladay lost the last great game he pitched. It was Game 5 of the 2011 NLDS against the Cardinals. His good friend and travel buddy Chris Carpenter out dueled Doc, 1-0. After the game when the Phillies were recounting the three-hour tragedy, Halladay zoomed past the most disappointing game of his life. According to a friend, who worked within the Phillies medical staff, he popped into the team doctor’s ofďŹ ce 20 minutes after the gut wrenching loss. “Do any of you know when the date of opening day is next season?â€? Halladay was so mentally strong that he had already tossed the memory of the most important game of his career, a crushing loss, into the trash can. Doc somehow moved on to the 2012 campaign. However, Halladay was never the same. By the end of 2013, it was evident that the brilliant pitcher was ďŹ nished. However, what struck me most about his career is that I’ve never been around a pitcher who was more respected by his peers. Whenever I spoke to opposing hitters, who faced Halladay, they practically acted as if he was a deity. Derek Jeter once told me how much he respected Halladay. “He’s the best,â€? Jeter said. “No pitch is thrown in the same spot and he just challenges you every time. He doesn’t throw waste pitches. I love facing him because I want to battle the best.â€? Halladay was a huge country music fan. Kenny Chesney once revealed to me that he begged Halladay to pitch to him. “I want him to go at me like it’s the seventh game of the World Series,â€? Chesney said. Doc never pitched to his country superstar pal. He also never pitched in a World Series. His best chance was in 2011. It didn’t pan out. It will be interesting to see what happens when Halladay is eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2019. Doc is on the bubble. He may eventually be enshrined considering he was the most dominant pitcher of his era even though he “onlyâ€? won 203 games. Not to sound like the hitters he opposed, who practically genuected when his name was mentioned but it was an honor to cover Halladay, who pitched brilliantly in 2010 and 2011. Halladay was in total control during those seasons, which makes his death so difďŹ cult to deal with since his plane was out of his control when he was forced to die – alone. Q

MEEK MILL vs. THE JUSTICE SYSTEM: A TIMELINE Mill’s critics – of which Common Pleas Judge Genece Brinkley is the most famous – argue that the rapper had chance after chance to make amends. Mill’s saga with the criminal justice system stretches back over a decade. Here’s everything you need to know: 2007 Meek’s first arrest happened when he was a teenager. Months before the young rapper would sign his first record deal, Philadelphia police confronted the 18-year-old at a North Philly corner store where he was arrested him on a string of gun, drug and other charges. Although charged with assaulting police, the budding star later claimed, in a now-famous Billboard interview, that Philadelphia police officers fabricated the assault charges. 2008-2009 Mill is convicted on seven charges, including two felonies. Judge Genece E. Brinkley sentences him to a maximum two years in prison and five years probation, according to court records. Mill spent eight months in prison and was released.

Mohammad Faye, one of hundreds protesting Meek Mill’s jail sentence, said that “locking [Mill] up isn’t doing any good for the community.
Meek-ing out justice Hundreds of Meek Mill fans took to the streets in Philly to protest the hometown rapper’s sentencing. How did we get here? BY MAX MARIN
H
undreds of aggrieved fans and activists rallied outside the Center City courthouse on Monday, Nov. 13, to protest the recent prison sentence of beloved hometown rapper Meek Mill. The crowd assembled outside of the Juanita Kidd Stout Criminal Justice Center, where Judge Genece E. Brinkley recently sentenced the rapper to two to four years in prison for violating his probation terms. Brinkley’s decision sent shockwaves from Philadelphia around the country, drawing ire from celebrities, fans and criminal justice reformers alike. Among those in attendance that night: former corrections ofďŹ cer turned superstar rapper Rick Ross; NBA legend Julius Erving; rapper Freeway; Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins; and members of Mill’s family – including his grandmother. Before the star-studded entourage took
129(0%(5
the microphone to protest Brinkley’s sentencing, Mohammad Faye, 25, stood quietly holding a “Free Meek poster. The North Philly resident couldn’t stay long. He had to attend night class at nursing school in suburban Willow Grove that evening, but he chiselled out time to attend the rally before hitting the books. “I had to, Faye said. “Where [Meek Mill] is right now, any of us could have been there. Originally I’m from Africa, I grew up there and came to the country when I was 15 years old. But the way that America is running, we’re all the same. You’re a black person, despite where you’re from. While he doesn’t excuse Mill’s numerous parole violations, Faye believes the embattled Philly rapper is clearly trying to a make a difference. Two weeks before he was sentenced, Mill took dozens of youth from the Philadelphia Boys & Girls Club to a 76ers game. On his latest album, Faye says he hears encouragement to the youth
to go to school and avoid his mistakes. “Locking him up isn’t doing any good for the community,â€? Faye added. Beyond those in attendance that night, other hip-hop moguls, Hollywood icons, and local celebrities swiftly threw in their support for Meek. Actor and comedian Kevin Hart, another beloved North Philly superstar, posted a defensive video on his Instagram account. Former NFL quarterback and activist Colin Kaepernick tweeted a viral reaction. Jay-Z condemned Meek’s sentence as “heavy-handed.â€? And at the rally on Tuesday night – save for a moment when part of the large crowd briey chanted “fuck that judge,â€? referring to Brinkley – the ďŹ rst Meek Mill protest stayed grounded in real justice reforms, calling for the courts to overturn his sentence while criticizing the failures of the system. Q TWITTER: @MAXMMARIN
2011 Meek Mill’s career reaches new heights with the release of chart-topping single “I’m A Bossâ€? and his well-received debut album “Dreams and Nightmares.â€? In several interviews, Meek says he is focusing all of his energy on his music. 2012 On Halloween evening, Mill is pulled over near 11th Street and Girard Avenue when officers claimed the smell of marijuana, according to court records. Mill refused to allow officers to search the car and was arrested. He was released the next morning without charges, but later alleged that Philly officers harassed him, taking his picture and posted them on social media without his consent. Mill also claimed the arrest caused him to miss a high-profile event and lose millions in a sponsorship deal with Puma. 2013 Mill sues the Philadelphia Police Department for civil rights violations, false imprisonment, and other offenses related to his 2012 Halloween arrest, according to court records. 2014 Mill criticizing the prosecutor and probation officer handling his case land Mill back before Brinkley. He is locked up for another five months, in part due to traveling out of town to perform without permission and missing phone calls from his probation officer. 2015 In December, Brinkley tells Mill that he has broken his fourth parole violation. Two reasons, WHYY reported from the courtroom: first, Mill had failed to make regular check-ins with the court to have his work-related travel approved (Mill’s lawyer argued that creative types are “notoriously slipshodâ€? with scheduling), and secondly, because one of Mill’s urine tests came back containing cold water (Mill denied tampering with it. Brinkley asked him: “How many times am I supposed to give him chances? You know I’ve been helping him since 2009 ‌ I ask you, how many times am I supposed to give him a second, third, fourth, fifth chance?â€? 2017 Mill is charged with violating his parole again for three incidents: driving his dirt bike recklessly in New York City, a feat which he broadcast on Instagram; testing positive for Percocet; and a physical altercation with at St. Louis Airport. On Nov. 7, Brinkley sentences him to two to four years in state prison for this final violation. TWITTER: @MAXMMARIN

Participants must check into the Health & Fitness Expo, but it is also available for free for spectators. Try to go for gold and prizes, or walk the route instead, and take in the historic sites of Philadelphia. You will deďŹ nitely get into the colonial spirit as you pass Independence Hall, the Betsy Ross House, and the Liberty Bell. Mainly at terrain, travel through the forest and trails of Fairmont Park and the streets of University City and Manayunk.
