FROM THE EDITOR
Are we missing the point? KERITH GABRIEL
I
think I’ve read just about every piece of news out there involving Meek Mill, and I don’t know – I think I see both sides here. Let me preface that his current situation puts zero doubt in my mind that Mill has become a symbol of just how unfair the American justice system is and its stance on the differences that still divide our nation. When it comes to race, minority men regardless of status, wealth and power don’t get the same breaks as their white counterparts. On Monday, Common Pleas Court Judge Genece E. Brinkley denied an appeal for bail calling Mill a “dangerâ€? to the community and labeling him a ight risk, sending him straight back to state prison to continue to serve his two-to-four year prison sentence. It was a shocking, but perhaps not surprising decision from the judge, one who has seen the Philadelphia rapper appear in her court room countless times over a 10-year-period. Do I think Brinkley has been too hard on Mill and should’ve given him a pass? Sure. Yeah, I honestly do. I think she’s setting an example, one her track record shows she’s done a lot. She has no problem sending people to jail for probation violations, take a look at her timeline. But I think she also sees Mill as a guy she’s given breaks to over a 10-year stretch and this time was the last time. To label him a danger to the community however may have shown just how biased Brinkley has become in her dealings with Mill. He may hang with “killas,â€? but Mill didn’t kill anyone. He’s a weed smoking, wheelie-popping rhyme sayer that can’t seem to get out of his own way as stupid decision after stupid decision seems to be his M.O. But a “dangerâ€? to Philadelphia? A ight risk on a bid of two-to-four? Please. That’s a stretch, Genece. But I get it. For the people who call Brinkley racist, a part of the system, a shill for the “Manâ€? or whatever other labels came from last month’s protest let’s take a step back to remember a few things here. Meek Mill violated probation. He violated probation. If you’re on probation and you get caught
3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20
doing something that violates probation, you have a very good chance of going to jail or prison. It’s how the law in this country works. We live in a very screwed up, biased and unfair judicial system, one ďŹ lled with closet racists that would gladly give someone that looks like them a pass over someone that looks like someone they feel is what’s wrong with America. It’s just life. In my younger years, I had a run-in with the law for a minor infraction. I got into a ďŹ ght and was charged with disorderly conduct. It was in that moment as a 20-something year-old man viewing how the system was set up that made me realize quickly that I never wanted to be back in that situation, back in a courtroom and honestly back where a white man held court over what could ultimately affect my life long term. I’m only talking about a petty misdemeanor here. I can’t even begin to comprehend what a potential felony situation like the one Mill is facing even looks like. It’s a hard hill in even the smallest of cases like mine, so his predicament must feel like Mount Everest. I feel for him. I really do. He’s from North Philly, I was born in and for a large chunk of my formative years grew up in Hunting Park. But I’m not naive in thinking that he put himself in this situation, no matter how minute the infraction. Popping wheelies on a dirt bike, or mini-bike or any kind of motorized vehicle when you’re on probation is going to get you back in front of a judge where your fate now lies in their hands. Getting involved in an altercation at an airport is going to get you involved in another court case. These aren’t slap on the wrist, minor “oh, that’s just Meek being Meekâ€? moments that we should just look past and ip the script to an easy topic of a biased, racial justice system. This is the shit he chose to do and now the transgressions he has to own. And yeah, sometimes owning up to them will get you two-to-four. So here’s hoping Mill can ďŹ nd a solution, the last thing we need is another young man in prison. But if he can’t, I’m hoping his case is one that hopefully portrays to all youth especially ones of color that sometimes regardless of status, power and money – sometimes you go to jail, even for the stupid shit like popping wheelies down a city street. It’s a tragic case, it’s a substantial period of time to have to serve, but let’s not forget here that it’s decisions originally made by Mill, not Brinkley, that ďŹ nds him wearing a familar blue jumpsuit at SCI Chester. â–

ENJOY A COLD ONE ON CHILL
Earlier this year, when Philly lyricist Chill Moody released his pineapple-infused IPA, aptly entitled nicethingsIPA, the beer sold out in no time leaving Philly’s craft beer aficionados hanging. Well, rejoice beer nerds as Moody, in collaboration with Dock Street Brewery, has produced a second batch of nicethingsIPA and will hold a two-day party to celebrate. Both will take place at the two Philly locations of Garage Bar on Dec. 6 and Dec. 7. You can come kick it with Chill on Dec. 6 at Garage’s South Philly location on 1231-22 E. Passyunk Ave. and on Dec. 7 at the Fishtown spot on 100 E. Girard Ave. from 6-9pm on both nights. Cheers! Q

“[He’s a] danger to the community. – Common Pleas court Judge Genece E. Brinkley, who denied bail during a scheduled hearing for Philly rapper Meek Mill, whom she sentenced to 2-4 years in state prison for probation violations just a month prior. LITTLE PEOPLE 1, SEPTA 0 As SEPTA continues to push forward with plans to increase its Norristown High Speed Line to cut through the heart of King of Prussia providing an artery from 69th Street Station to King of Prussia Mall and into Norristown, naturally KOP residents aren’t too keen on much of said artery owing through their backyards. Many of these residents now have taken upon themselves to delay the construction through a group called, “No KOP Rail.â€? As a result, the planning of this route, started in 2012, now has an anticipation date of carrying passengers in 2023. Not because that’s legitimately how long it’ll take to construct the 5-mile – yes, cinco millas – stretch, but because the No KOP Rail efforts are forcing SEPTA to reconsider, delaying the process. According the article, SEPTA has evaluated more than 30 possible routes as a result of No KOP Rail’s dismay. “I took it as a little victory,â€? No KOP Rail group leader Dan Cowhey told Philly.com. “We’re slowing them down a bit. They’re really starting to think about this.â€? Q

Paying big for failing to pay Tierra Colombiana, Mixto pay $830,000 to employees in overtime settlement BY MAX MARIN
T
wo popular restaurants are paying big for failing to pay their workers overtime wages. According to a federal judgment ďŹ led Thursday, Mixto and Tierra Colombiana, popular Latin American restaurants owned by Jorge Mosquera, have agreed to pay $414,765 in back wages to 156 employees to resolve overtime and recordkeeping violations under the Fair Labor Standards Act, as well as an equal amount in damages. Grant total? Nearly $830,000. The judgment, which still needs approval from a federal judge, also mandates that the restaurant owner pay a $10,000 civil penalty to the government. The undoing of Mixto and Tierra Colombiana appears to have been partially self-inicted. In a complaint ďŹ led back in March, the U.S. Department of Labor pointed to the businesses’ own employee handbook, which explicitly stated that workers would not receive overtime pay. The federal labor act – enacted in 1938 to establish minimum wage and overtime regulations – requires employers to pay time-and-half to workers who put in more than 40 hours a week. The government’s investigation found that workers at both eateries were regularly working more than 40 hours a week without due compensation. OfďŹ cials also found that management had failed to keep proper records of employees’ hours, per FSLA standards.

Tierra Colombiana runs out of a terracottatiled building on 5th Street in Hunting Park, and is a well-regarded hub in North Philadelphia’s Latino community. Mixto is located at 11th and Pine Streets. Both restaurants have agreed to comply with federal labor standards as part of the settlement. “This resolution restores back wages rightfully earned by hard-working employees,â€? James Cain, the Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division district director in Philadelphia, said in a statement. “We encourage all employers to take advantage of the Division’s education and outreach efforts to help them understand their responsibilities and how to properly comply with the Fair Labor Standards Act.â€? This is the second recent six-ďŹ gure settlement for Philly restaurants regarding labor practice. The government won a $396,000 case last month from Talula’s Garden, a popular fast casual eatery owned by restaurateurs Stephen Starr and Amiee Olexy. That settlement found that managers had underpaid 63 workers at the Washington Square spot. Oscar L. Hampton III, a regional solicitor for the Department of Labor, said in a statement that the enforcement against Mixto and Tierra “will ensure that workers are paid for all of the hours they worked, and will go a long way in leveling the playing ďŹ eld for employers in the restaurant industry.â€? religions. While a boy from Al-Aqsa said he had previous interactions with Christians and Jews, a girl from St. Christopher’s said that this was her ďŹ rst explicit experience speaking with people from the Jewish and Muslim faiths. Originally, the collaboration was designed for Al-Aqsa and Barrack as an extension of Writers Matter’s Israeli/Palestinian program. But through a multitude of factors, it evolved into an interfaith program that included St. Christopher’s. Even so, Dr. Sami Adwan, the head of the Israeli-Palestinian program in the Middle East, traveled across the globe to talk about his experiences in Israel and the West Bank. “[In Israeli schools] we use the same approach. Children team up and talk about their lives, their stories, their issues, their concerns their fears, who they are,â€? explained Adwan, who mentioned that West Bank schools require a unique setup due to segregation. “If you read [their journals] without names, it is hard to distinguish who’s Palestinian and who’s Israeli, and that’s how we try to go beyond the immediate boundaries, which is really created by the political situation.â€? According to Stephanie Raphel, the English and history (CORE) teacher for Barrack Hebrew Academy, while the day focused on similarities, the differences are still very real and noticed by the students. Raphel relayed that a number of the Jewish students, which included some seventh graders, were a bit wary of meeting the others due to the political climate and global treatment of the Jews. Currently, the Jewish middle and high school students visibly wear swipe card IDs as a precaution against potential attacks. “I think the kids know their differences. If you ignore them, it seems fake or artiďŹ cial to underplay the kids’ knowledge,â€? challenged Raphel. “But I do feel that they ďŹ rst have to be comfortable with each other, [before they deal] with the harder topics, because you can’t just jump into the hard topics.â€? Raphel went on to argue that the socioeconomic differences in the Jewish and Muslim students’ poetry assignments were palpable. Situated in the afuent suburbs of Bryn Mawr, Barrack maintains an economic landscape that contrasts St. Christopher’s in Northeast Philadelphia and Al-Aqsa in North Philly. Jose Santiago, a social studies teacher at Al-Aqsa, was ďŹ rst drawn to the program because of the socioeconomic component. “I want my students to break the isolation they live in. They come from one of the poorest areas of Philadelphia, and I want them to meet the other reality of their community. So that’s one part,â€? relayed Santiago, who was born in Puerto Rico and converted to Islam 10 years ago. “For the religious part, for me, this is part of my religious responsibility as a Muslim. It is a commandment from God, in the Koran, that we meet others, learn the differences, and learn where we are alike, and treat each other with respect.â€? In an exchange of cultures, the Jewish students explained a few of their religious wares and texts, and the Muslim students performed their “Call to Prayer.â€? If implemented in more schools, not only could this program revolutionize the pedagogical structure in lower grades, but Santiago also believes it could bring in the skills needed to transform future domestic and global politics. “Many politicians use the divide and conquer technique. They can divide us and have us ignorant about each, and that’s how they can win elections,â€? suggested Santiago. “That’s why programs like this are so important...is very important that my students know about these other students, and the other students know about my students. So maybe, I hope, we can close the gap that divide us, and in that sense, we can become a better, stronger community, and maybe face the challenges that time has posed.â€? Q TWITTER: @ANDREACANTOR9

Jay-Z put on a show for the ages in South Philly on Dec. 1, the latest stop on his 4:44 tour.
Rap royalty Jay-Z’s sold out show
at the Wells Fargo Center awed and inspired BY GREGORY DALE
J
ay-Z is the master of speaking things into existence. On his song “Where I’m From, which appeared on his sophomore effort, “In My Lifetime, Vol. 1., he boastfully positioned himself among hip hop’s royalty when he rapped the line: “I’m from where n*ggas pull your card, and argue all day about who’s the best emcees, Biggie, Jay-Z or Nas? It was an audacious line for the Brooklynborn rapper who had just released his debut a year prior and hadn’t yet garnered attention from the masses. Nearly four years later on his track “U Don’t Know, which appeared on his 2001 critically-acclaimed album “The Blueprint, he proclaimed that he was “raping Def Jam till he is the $100 million man. Now, a decade and a half later, his net worth is listed at $810 million and arguably, he’s considered one of the greatest of all time. Jay, born Shawn Carter, reminded us of these early predictions during the Philadelphia stop of his 4:44 tour on Dec. 1 at the Wells Fargo Center. He also used the performance as a chance to inspire his fans to achieve their own greatness. “We gotta get our shit together, we gotta boss up, he told the crowd. “We ain’t no second-class citizens to nobody. We are some of

the most beautiful, most intelligent people in the world and tonight we gon’ celebrate that Black excellence in here.â€? After a preceding performance by Vic Mensa, Jay appeared on stage shortly before 10 p.m. and opened while “Don’t Let It Showâ€? by the Alan Parson’s Project blasted on the speakers while a bevy of huge big-screens showed pictures of the star of the show surrounded and amassed in ames. Then, the audio transitioned into “Kill Jay-Z,â€? the intro track to his 4:44 album, which samples the aforementioned song by the 1970s-progressive rock band. As the screens lifted, Jay emerged wearing a black leather jacket over a white T-shirt, track pants and white sneakers. He also wore a paper planes Roc Nation ďŹ tted cap with 4:44 emblazoned on the right side. As the crowd went wild, he moved through a number of his fan favorites including “D’Evils,â€? “Heart of the City (Ain’t No Love),â€? and “Run This Town.â€? The mood shifted and turned somber as he performed the title track “4:44,â€? which he described as “the most uncomfortable songâ€? that he ever created. The track, considered the crux of his latest album, hints at his potential inďŹ delity to his superstar wife, BeyoncĂŠ Knowles-Carter. The audience gazed on as Jay-Z poured his heart out over the stirring
beat, which samples Hannah Williams & The AfďŹ rmations’ “Late Nights & Heartbreak.â€? Shortly thereafter, the energy lifted again as he breezed through his arsenal of hits including “Jigga My N*ggaâ€? and “Izzo.â€? By 10:30, he had the crowd enthralled with “U Don’t Knowâ€? as an electric guitar played over the infectious melody. A sea of people threw up the Roc-A-fella diamond hand symbol that Jay notoriously made famous in his earlier career at the cap of the song. Though he had already included a segment dedicated to Philly emcee Meek Mill in earlier tour stops, Jay continued his lament about the rapper’s current situation while in his hometown. In early November, a judge sentenced Mill to two to four years in prison for violating his probation terms. The judgment drew protest from fans and celebrities alike, considering it unjust. “This young man has been on probation for 11 years, since he was 19 years old. That man is being stomped by the system,â€? Jay said during the show. He also motioned for his DJ, Young Guru, to throw on Mills’ 2012 “Dreams and Nightmaresâ€? and turned the microphone toward the crowd as they chanted the lyrics. Jay intermittently rapped the lyrics with the crowd, as he moved across the stage. At the end of the set, the crowd began chanting, “free Meek Mill.â€? Then after performing “Allure,â€? and a verse from his longstanding classic “Dead Presidents,â€? Jay slipped below the stage via a trap door for a short intermission. He emerged a short while later and performed “Moonlightâ€? and “Imaginary Players.â€? After moving through a bevy of other songs from his extensive catalogue, he performed the single “Numb/Encoreâ€? from his 2004 Collision Course album with rock band Linkin Park. He dedicated the performance to the band’s frontman Chester Bennington who died in July after apparently committing suicide. Capping off the evening, Jay performed a mashup of his signature hits including “Ain’t No,â€? “Money Ain’t a Thang,â€? “Money, Cash, Hoes,â€? and “La-la-la.â€? He then proceeded to walk through the crowd and make his exit as he signed autographs and shook hands along the way. Though Jay celebrated his 48th birthday on Dec. 4, the 4:44 tour is the latest example of why the rapper is a hip hop anomaly: he’s maintained relevancy across decades. The audience alone proved this as fans young and old rapped his modern-day hits and old favorites over the course of the show. The Philadelphia tour stop comes on the heels of the announcement of his eight Grammy nominations. Among the nods, he’s up for Album of the Year, for “4:44â€? and Record of the Year for “The Story of OJ.â€? Q

SAVAGE LOVE
What happened? DAN SAVAGE
I
used to be a fan of your column, Dan, but something happened to you. Maybe it’s stress, the current political climate, or some other issue—I don’t know. I used to look forward to your columns because they were fun, smart, and helpful—but I don’t enjoy what I’m seeing now. If something did happen to you, reach out for help. You’re on the verge of losing a loyal reader. – Reader Enquiring About Dan’s Enervating Responses I’ve been getting letters like yours—what happened to you, Dan, you used to be more fun—at this time of year, every year, for the last 25 years, READER. Maybe I get moody when the weather gets gloomy and that spills into my column annually. And perhaps the current political climate—a rather reserved way to describe the destruction of our democracy—is making my seasonal grumping worse. Another possible factor‌ I don’t know how long you’ve been reading, READER, but I’ve been writing this column for a long time. And back before the internet came along and ruined everything for everyone, I used to get a lot of how-to/ what’s-that questions about sex acts and sex toys. A column explaining butt plugs to readers who knew nothing about them— and lacked easy access to butt plug info— was as much fun to read as it was to write. But every sex act and every sex toy has its own Wiki page now, which means I don’t get to write fun columns about butt plugs anymore, READER, and you don’t get to read them. Now the questions all revolve around someone being deeply shitty or someone deluding themselves about how deeply shitty they’re being. Columns ďŹ lled with questions about and from people behaving badly are
3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20
never going to be as delightsome as those butt plug columns of yore. But thank you for writing in to share your concern, READER, and rest assured that nothing truly terrible has happened to me—besides Trump, of course, but Trump happened to all of us, not just me. Still, I don’t want to lose you as a reader, so I’m going to make an effort to sunny things up a bit over the next few weeks. Okay! Let’s see what else came in the mail today! Hopefully something fun! My signiďŹ cant other and I rarely have sex. A while ago, I had a sexual encounter with her daughter. We continued to have sexual encounters for some time. Now my signiďŹ cant other and I may be getting married. Her daughter and I broke it off, but it started up again after a week. I am attempting to break things off with my signiďŹ cant other’s daughter again, but I’m having a hard time. Please advise. – Restraining Urges Is Necessary Ugh. Do you see what I mean, READER? It’s hard to come through with jokes, erudition, and uplift when you’re responding to questions like this one. Okay, RUIN. Marrying a woman whose adult daughter you can’t keep your dick out of‌ yeah, that’s a bad idea. (And her daughter is an adult, right?!?) Sooner or later, your signiďŹ cant other is going to discover what’s been going on, and your relationship with both of these women will be destroyed. You’ll be able to move out and move on, RUIN, but your former signiďŹ cant other isn’t going to be so lucky. Because while you won’t always be her SO, and hopefully won’t ever be her husband, her daughter is always going to be her child. So while you may get out from this relationship with some light scarring, your ex and her daughter will be left with open, gaping wounds for the rest of their lives. My advice: Pull up your pants, cancel the wedding, and get as far away from your SO and her daughter as possible. Q

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING: Kathy & Patrick Conway are the best real estate agents that I’ve ever dealt with because they are so experienced. They gave me great ideas and direction -- both for the big picture as well as with the small details. It was often the small details that made a difference. Best of all, I knew Kathy was with me every step of the way. She patiently responded to my calls and supported me when I panicked about something. I myself am a Clinical Psychologist and to ďŹ nd these qualities in a real estate agent was amazing. Kathy & Pat have always been unfailingly optimistic and for me this has been important. I trust Kathy & Pat and would never use anyone else.
